Can collectors converge THIS weekend Bendigo plays host to collectors of all things beer at the annual Canfest. Be it collector cans or bar mirrors, coasters or mats, you’re sure to find

something to your liking if you like to tipple from a tinnie. Bendigo’s Gary McGrath has been a can fan for 40 years and is hoping to find a few more for his collection.

AFTER years of neglect, Lake Eppalock is about to begin a long process of regeneration. “There is the potential to rebuild some of the reserves and improve the amenities, which are run down,” Goulburn-Murray Water’s Land and On-Water manager Dave Jackson said this week. “It’s not just about the com-

mercial entity, it’s all about re-engaging the whole community after 15 years of drought, an opportune time to ask, what’s your vision?”

The closure of the Brolga hotel at Lake Eppalock in 2004, followed in 2006 by the closure of the local boat repair business, was

the end of an era at the storage facility. At that time, G-MW suggested it was developing a long-term

plan for the area as a tourist resort, which would include not just boating facilities but also hotels, restaurants and even a conference centre. Since then, the corporation has embarked on a strategy of community consultation to create land and on-water management plans for all Victorian storages.

Reviewing use and facilities such as boat ramps and access, they have approached community members, landholders, government and agencies, to assist in the creation of a “longterm vision for each site. “We have completed the Lake Hume, Lake Mulwala, Lake Nillahcootie and Waranga Basin plans, and Eildon and Goulburn Weir are under way, Mr Jackson said. “Lake Eppalock is now just ticking over, in the preliminary stages. “City of Greater Bendigo Council has

said they are happy to come on board, and we have appointed a consultancy. “We’re set to launch in the next few weeks. Mr Jackson said the consultancy period, which will take between six and 12 months, aims to produce a draft document detailing the vision for Eppalock’s future. He said land abutting the lake is available for development within the plan, subject to the “core values (such as water quality and bio-diversity) already in place for the storage facility “With a plan in place, we’ll be able to lobby for grants, because we will have a tool to do

that, from what the community has told us. “It’s amazing what the government is open to. Mr Jackson said community reaction to the planning consultancies already undertaken has been positive. “We’re finding some really good feedback, he said. “When we go into workplaces and clubs and the wider community, people say to us, thank goodness you’ve come to talk to us, and that you want to listen. REVAMP: The consultancy period aims to produce a draft document detailing the vision for Lake Eppalock.

Insurance bills deluge

Bendigo residents in flood-prone areas have been slugged with a huge rise in premiums – and the advice is to ‘shop around’ By ROSEMARY SORENSEN

BENDIGO properties in designated flood-prone areas are being hit with astronomical rises in insurance premiums of up to 2000 per cent. One resident of Havlin Street was shocked to be told by her insurer, RACV, her house and contents insurance was set to rise from $300 to $7000 to include flood insurance. Another resident in central Bendigo was refused renewal by her insurer, Calliden, because the Bendigo postcode is a flood-risk area. “The costs of natural disasters will inevitably have an affect on insurance premiums as companies adjust their pricing to take account of individual risk levels and increasing costs of reinsurance,” Manager Communications of the Insurance Council of Australia Campbell Fuller said. “Flood insurance is not yet mandatory, though the Federal Government has committed to introducing it,” he said. The ICA released the annual catastrophe figures last week, which showed that

insurance losses from events such as the Queensland and Victorian floods increased from $2.144 billion in 2010 to $4.35 billion in 2011, not including the Christmas Day storms in Melbourne. Mr Fuller said that because each insurer’s policies and conditions are different, it pays to “shop around”. He said it is the role of government to reduce exposure to natural disasters. “Unless governments improve land use planning and building codes, remove some

Flood insurance is not yet mandatory, though the Federal Government has committed to introducing it of the cost impediments to taking out insurance such as state taxes and levies, and build the physical barriers to protect those at risk, communities will remain vulnerable,” Mr Fuller said. Corporate affairs manager at Australian Pensioners Insurance Agency Reuben Aitchison said the big price rises are not just due to increased payouts from natural disasters but also the result of companies’ reinsurance costs.

IN FULL FLOW: The Bendigo Creek. Insurance premiums have soared for those in flood-prone areas. Apia, which is part of Suncorp, has always had nonoptional flood cover as part of their home and contents policy, while others, such as RACV, are going through the process of introducing nonoptional flood cover to all policies. Mr Aitchison said Apia assesses by individual property

rather than postcode, using flood mapping from councils to assess risk. “If you are at a significantly higher risk, the premium reflects that; if you are not in a flood area you don’t pay any additional,” he said. Insurance broker Tony McCormick said the increase in natural disasters in the past

few years is forcing people to focus on more than just the price of insurance. “People need to understand that if they save $80 or $100, something has to come out (of their cover),” Mr McCormick said. “The reality is people need to take their insurance services a lot more seriously,

and see what’s behind the offer, the quality and service provided. “If it’s just price you go on, don’t whinge if your claim isn’t covered. “You need to carefully consider the insurance that suits you, and the backup and support that comes with it.”

Principals’ powers and drugs crackdown among new legislation

New year brings bong ban

POWERS: Bendigo Senior Secondary College principal Dale Pearce.

By BEN CAMERON

THE State Government has banned the bong. As of Sunday (January 1), it’s now illegal to sell or display cannabis water pipes, or bongs. While it’s a new law that’s pleased one retail owner in Bendigo’s city centre, who has removed all bongs from the counter, she had doubts about its effectiveness to curb the use of marijuana. “I personally don’t like them (bongs),” she said. “But I don’t think it’s going to stop people from smoking.”

Other new laws that come into effect in 2012 include principals of government schools having new powers to ban, search for and seize harmful items (such as knives or offensive weapons) that are on school grounds, or in the possession of students at school or when engaged in teachersupervised student activities. The law will also permit assistant principals and authorised teachers to search for and seize such items. Bendigo Senior Secondary College principal Dale Pearce could not see the relevance of the law to most schools,

let alone Bendigo ones. “My understanding is that teachers now have the power to search cars on school grounds, but I can’t see a circumstance where this would be necessary,” he said. “It’s not really an issue for our school.” Provisions have also been put in place to change the dates of local government elections in exceptional circumstances, while part of several major sentencing reforms, a range of community-based sentences will be replaced with a single, flexibile, Community Corrections Order.

Red tape impasse may lose access to Fortuna By ROSEMARY SORENSEN

FORTUNA VILLA is in danger of being lost forever to public use, if a solution to the impasse between the state and federal governments is not found soon. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they (the Federal Government) did put it in on the open market, long-time campaigner for the historic mansion Terry Davidson said this week. “The State Government really needs to put their thinking cap on and come up with a plan. “If they have done anything about putting something to the Federal Government, they haven’t said publicly what the detail of that plan is. Fortuna became a political football last month when the Nationals MP for Northern Victoria region Damian Drum said

Excitement brews for beer can collectors By STEVE KENDALL

WHAT started as a trophy hunt has become a lifelong collection for Gary McGrath. As a youngster Gary marked off his illicit forays to the bottleshop with an empty can to remember his beer. Now 40 years and 6000 cans later he has a room full of mementos of liquid entertainment. While he is a drinker, Gary admits to draining some of the collectables’ contents down the sink. “Collectors don’t leave the beer in the cans, he said. “We punch two holes in the bottom of the can and drain it. “Otherwise the cans can explode, or the earlier steel ones will rust from the inside. There are a few like-minded collectors in town this weekend for Canfest, a twoday spree for those interested

BENDIGO’S Radius Disability Services has opened in its new location at Eaglehawk. Radius Enterprises, a division of Radius Disability Services, comprises five commercial businesses employing 115 adults with a disability at 128 Victoria Street. Chief executive officer Jan Boynton said Radius had planned to build a new building for all its enterprises at its East Bendigo site. However, an assessment of the suitability of the site led to a search for alternative buildings and an opportunity presented for Radius to partner with CVGT Australia at their old training centre in Victorian Street, Eaglehawk.

BENDIGO Business Council recently toured the brand new NBN Co Discovery Centre in Melbourne’s Docklands, pronouncing it a winner for educating Victorians about the NBN. The centre houses hands-on interactive displays of how the NBN will interact within the home environment, and Bendigo Business Council Executive Officer Kevin de Vries highly recommends the tour to anyone interested in learning more about the NBN. “Given our interest in having the NBN come to our region as soon as possible, it was very educational to visit the Discovery Centre. We saw how the NBN can be used in a home environment and how the connections work. There were some great examples of large screen video gaming and a health consultation device that will allow you to talk to a doctor via the internet and connect up a blood pressure meter to check your health in real time, Mr de Vries said.

Sound resonates with Noela

For my work, I have to experience a place with real impact, something that makes me go ‘wow’

CAPTURING AN EXPERIENCE: Noela Stratford with her artworks. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN By ROSEMARY SORENSEN

AFTER a decade living back in Bendigo, Noela Stratford is still waiting for that moment when the landscape takes hold of her and won’t let go. “For my work, I have to experience a place with real impact, something that makes me go ‘wow’,” the artist says. She has tried to find that wow factor on Mt Alexander, but so far, the emotional hit has not happened. Dr Stratford’s new show, which

opens tomorrow at the 2012 La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre in View Street, is the result of a trip to New Zealand. She created the big charcoal drawings following a trip to the dramatic Milford Sound, where crashing waterfalls and misty precipitous mountains evoked for her the emotional power of the German romantic expressionists she most admires. “It’s taken me a long time to admit it, but I am a romantic,” Dr Stratford says. “I am interested in the subjectivity of landscape, in not just how

the

belmont hotel

something looks, not just a mirroring, but what you experience from seeing it. “I just loved Milford Sound, always wanted to see it, it hasn’t been messed with. “It was an experience I wanted to capture.” Working in charcoal, Dr Stratford has created sensuously soft, deep black works, through which the dynamic white of sky and water shine out. Born in Drouin (“a landscape of rock stone – I keep coming back to it”, she says), Dr Stratford lived

Market Fresh Seafood Platters $25pp

in Bendigo while her children were growing up, then in other parts of Victoria, until returning 11 years ago. She studied at Deakin, Melbourne and Monash universities, until finally completing her doctorate at Deakin in 1998, with a thesis on the philosophical history of landscape art. Last year, Ballarat Art Gallery had an exhibition of her drawings which included one of the Milford Sound works, but this is the first time the whole series has gone on show.

In September this year, a new series based on her experience of Cataract Gorge in Tasmania will go on show at the Woodbine gallery in Malmsbury. She is hoping then, that something in the Goldfields landscape will capture her imagination and lead to a new series. “It doesn’t need to be dramatic, it can be tranquil,” Dr Stratford says. “But it has to have impact.” Contemplating the Sound, drawings by Noela Stratford, is on show at the VAC Access Gallery until January 29.

New protection devices will lock out power

safety switch kicks in BENDIGO residents may face longer power cuts during bushfires following implementation of new rules. The work plan – which will implement recommendations 27 and 32 of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission – was announced as part of the Government’s response to the Powerline Bushfire safety Taskforce. “We must do everything we can to reduce the risk of catastrophic bushfire caused by power assets,” Minister for Energy Michael O’Brien said. Under the work program, the greatest risk reduction is delivered by new-generation protection devices that will be

lays will be because the equipment needs to be manually reset. “This is a 10-year work program and it is expected that work will begin on these measures as soon as practicable,” Mr O’Brien said. shadow Minister for Energy Lily D’Ambrosio said the response to the Power Line Bushfire safety Taskforce’s report has been light on detail and failed to explain the taskforce’s power cut recommendations “Victoria is about to enter its high-risk fire period and the fact that the Government has not informed the Victorian public will add to the confusion of Victoria’s regional communities in high-fire risk areas.”

HISTORIC: Bendigo Golden Dragon Museum’s general manager Anita Jack with Loong. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

COMFORT: The booze bus has been converted to a motorhome.

No limits with motorhome By STEVE KENDALL

Loong makes his return TO celebrate the Chinese New Year and the year of the dragon, the Golden Dragon Museum will be hosting a festival in the Dai Gum San precinct on January 28. From 6.30pm the air will be filled with the smell of Chinese food and the two stages will come alive with entertainment which includes, fire breathers, stilt walkers, lion dances, dragon

dancing and martial arts demonstrations. The rhythmic beating of drums will persuade Loong and Yar Loong out into the streets to perform among the crowd to a theatrical display of fireworks. In Chinese mythology, a dragon depicted with five claws is said to be a representation of the highest authority and a symbol of power,

strength and good luck. For over two thousand years Chinese Emperors used the dragon as a symbol of their rule; misuse of the symbol was treason. Special permission was sought by the Bendigo Chinese to get such a unique dragon to be made during the reign of Emperor Guanxu (1875-1908). To everyone’s surprise,

such a request was granted which consequently provided Bendigo with Loong who is the only remaining dragon from the 1890s. Loong made his debut performance in 1892 through the streets of Bendigo during the annual Easter Festival Gala Parade in front of an astonished crowd who had never laid their eyes on such a wonderful sight.

EVEN if it’s days since your last tipple, the sight of a Police .05 bus on the road ahead can make you take notice. So how would you feel if you had one in the yard? Bendigo Lakeside Autos, on the corner of Napier and Nolan streets, is giving you the chance to do just that, with one sitting on their lot. It’s for sale too. Quite what you do with one is up to you, but with a little imagination who knows? Inside it’s been refitted as a motorhome, so that’s the primary market. Principal Norm Sheahan bought the bus online at auction, and said it’s perfect for travelling. “It has the dual cab up front, and it’s a good quality fit,” he said. “It has some of the original fitting left, but it’s really a motorhome.” The perfect traveller can be yours for around $89,000, just right for the trip around Australia, and it’s sure to keep other road users in line too. Cheers.

Following the leads THE North Sandhurst State School was not the only local school to have suffered from having its buildings partially or completely destroyed by fire. A year earlier in 1899 the Specimen Hill State School was burnt, it had been determined the cause of that fire was as a result of a burning log having rolled out of the fireplace onto the wooden floor, thus the building caught alight and was destroyed. This particular Specimen Hill is the one in West Bendigo, as readers will be aware from my past articles, that there were at least three other Specimen Hill names featured in the Bendigo locality. Last week I mentioned that suspicion was initially focused on four swagmen, who were reputed to be near the North Sandhurst State School on Saturday, July 12, 1890, the day before the fire, which destroyed about half of the weatherboard building. The detectives, after asking many questions in and around Irishtown, found that the swagmen had made for the Murray Road. At the Shamrock Hotel in Huntly one of the

JAMES LERK attendants told them that the men had tramped past the hotel on the Sunday. The problem was to know if the swagmen had continued along the same road, or if they had decided to cut across along the country track going east and make their way to Axedale. However, the investigators found that some farmers in Bagshot had seen the swagmen, this information was confirmed by the railway gatekeeper who lived along side the Bagshot Railway Station. Enthused by the information received, the detectives decided to catch the next available passing train and go on as far as Goornong. Goornong in 1890 was a much more populated place than it is today, the passenger trains stopped there before going further on to Elmore, Rochester and eventually Echuca. On arrival in Goornong the detectives immediately went to the Goornong Police Station and sought the assistance of the local police officer. This officer knew

Not many hours had passed and through the combined efforts of the investigative team their object was realised. The four swagmen were located between Goornong and Elmore. A correspondent for the Elmore Standard was able to record that this small drama was played out in their locality. The four men were taken by the police to Elmore Police Station, where the swagmen were questioned intensely by the officers. It became patently clear that the swagmen had no knowledge of the fire, in fact, they were not even near the school, so those on who suspicion was at first cast were deemed and declared to

be totally innocent. The men were thanked for their co-operation with the police and were allowed to leave. As a result of this positive outcome for these itinerant laborers, some locals who had heard of the whole affair offered the swagmen short term employment in digging drains and grubbing out tree stumps. In the meantime, Mr J M Henry, the head teacher of the school, had written to the Secretary of the Education Department explaining the predicament of the North Sandhurst State School at Irishtown following the fire. The section of building that had been left standing was damaged and one whole wing was just a pile of ashes. What was he to do with the children under

MLA: A S Bailes initiated meetings about the rebuilding. his care? A reply was received that the school would be re-erected and it would be done in a more permanent character. Headmaster Henry assumed naturally that any works to be done at the school would be in brick, and his spirits lifted considerably. The reply from the department had come in only four days following the fire. Local parliamentary representative A S Bailes MLA interviewed the departmental secretary, and his reply was a little different to what was to become the reality. The destroyed room was to be rebuilt and pupils were to be catered for at other schools.

Asking the question The question must be asked of Ivar hunt re his redevelopment of the Victoria hotel in eaglehawk – will there be alcohol available or sold on the premises? If so, then it would hardly be appropriate for any emergency housing situation and his claim should be denied. If not, he is to be congratulated. H. Leslie, Bendigo.

Puppet councillors SurprISe, surprise another councillor comes out and tells us their system is not working (Bendigo Weekly, December 30). We voted this lot in because we wanted change, now we are being told after four years nothing has changed. This ‘keystone cop’ mob will never get any better while we tolerate the ’boys in the back room’ mentality. We as concerned citizens of this great town need to have a very serious look at the role of the City of Greater Bendigo organisation structure. At this stage it looks like our elected councillors are nothing more than puppets who are having their strings pulled by others. Concerned citizen, Bendigo

Little doubt Thales will be awarded Hawkei contract Mr WISeMAn is correct in saying Thales is yet to sign a contract for the production of the hawkei pMVL and I have never said anything to

the contrary. Thales has won the bid to proceed to the next stage of contract negotiations referred to in defence jargon as the ‘down select’ process. This represents the major hurdle in the complex acquisition process as it essentially means that hawkei’s competitors have been all but eliminated from consideration. The uS JLTV program referred to in Mr Wiseman’s comments is now several years behind schedule and stands a strong chance of being cancelled completely as part of planned cutbacks in uS Government defence spending. This in itself is a good reason for the Australian Government to pursue a locally manufactured option. This acquisition process is the same that was followed by the howard Government in 1997 when the original Bushmaster protected Military Vehicle received approval to proceed to the next stage of the testing, evaluation and contract negotiation. Mr Wiseman chooses to ignore the fact that this first Bushmaster contract fell over and had to be renegotiated resulting in a six year period between signing the first contract and the start of full production for the now highly successful Bushmaster pMV. Thales will now be allocated substantial funding by the Australian Government to build and test additional hawkei prototypes. This approach ensures both Thales and the Government share the risks associated with the development of a suitable production-ready vehicle. The process is remarkably similar to that which the State Coalition Government is following in calling for expressions of interest; shortlisting and awarding the construc-

tion contract for the new Bendigo hospital, valued at $630 million, just under half the value of the potential $1.5 billion hawkei pMV-L program. There is little doubt Thales will be awarded the hawkei contract and I’m confident production will start in Bendigo well short of the six years it took the howard Government to finally get its act together with the first Bushmaster contract. Who really pays? Anyone wondering why certain people become serial critics of local government need look no further than the mayor’s ridiculous comment reported in Bendigo Weekly, December 30. his claim that the new year’s eve firework display was a gift to the community from the City of Greater Bendigo was one of the most ridiculous statements I have heard for some time.

how can anyone claim to give people a gift when it is the recipients who are paying for it? All forms of government Federal, State and local do not create income, they merely distribute other people’s. Concerns expressed by many residents in recent letters would suggest the City of Greater Bendigo does not have a very good record in this regard. The mayor’s comments will do nothing to change people’s D. Arscott perceptions. Kangaroo Flat

The State Government’s flood recovery employment program will be extended until December due to high demand. Water Minister peter Walsh said the $6 million program was announced in March last year to train skilled local people directly affected by flooding, and to then employ them to assist with flood recovery works. Mr Walsh said while there had been a slow uptake in the beginning due to wet conditions, partici-

pant demand in november had more than tripled since June. “At the end of november last year almost 140 people had participated in the program, so that’s 140 people who could have otherwise been without any income, Mr Walsh said. “It’s also 140 people helping to clean up their community. “This program is vital to both support the local economy in flood-affected areas and assist with the

clean up of flood damage, which can be a huge task for small communities. The flood recovery employment program is delivered by Victoria’s Catchment Management Authorities in the north Central, Glenelg hopkins, Goulburn Broken, Mallee, north east and Wimmera regions. For more information about the flood recovery employment program, contact your local CMA or the Department of primary Industries on 136 186.

It’s just not cricket A FUNNY thing happened this summer as the Australian Test cricket team set about restoring some much-needed pride at the expense of the visiting Indian team. While the traditional fiveday game continues its revival, the game continues to feast upon itself via the phenomenon known as Twenty20, or T20. T20 is destroying real cricket. And we’re letting it happen, all for massive bucks. This shorter version of the shortened version of the game is reflective of society in general, and what is considered to be popular (or what actually is popular), as measured by what is in the most public demand at the time. Our throw-away society of today has a minimal attention span, and not enough constants in their lives to keep them sufficiently occupied. They need fast, easily digestible, disposable forms of entertainment and distraction. Nothing that makes them think, or to be patient to fully appreciate the better, more talented, deeper aspects of the finer things in life. Fast food pays the bills that allow T20 to exist. Those images of high-profile cricketers being interviewed wearing their team uniforms plastered in the branding of a certain fast food company say it all. I can only wonder how often these highly-paid athletes actually eat the fast food they promote. A combination of the rise of celebrity culture, the speed of communication in the modern age and social media has eroded genuine values. Into this breech steps T20 cricket. The brainless masses are dazzled by big shots, bright

This is where the money is and so the powers will chase it and pander to it. An appreciation of the finer points of the wonderful, elegant, masterful game that is test cricket cannot fit into the brain-dead modern society. It’s too much for them to take in, when there are so many other easy, instant quick fixes out there. Test cricket offers no instant gratification in the modern world – which is what the modern world is all about. Patience used to be a virtue. Now, for many, it seems to be problematic. And so in our desire to cash in we are damaging our cricketers. Flat and docile wickets designed for T20 cricket are the diet of our young developing players – and so when confronted with a wicket like Hobart, it goes into the too hard basket. We blame the wicket for being too hard to bat on. And New Zealand pulls off one of the great upsets of the modern era. Uncertain times BendigoWeekly

Editorial Comment INSURANCE is not a very interesting topic – until that moment when you need it. While no one knows what climate change is going to mean for weather patterns, the increase in natural disasters over the past few years has put us all on high alert. You can’t replace lives lost, but you can help recovery, as the victims of Black Saturday bushfires and the 2010 floods in our region will testify. Having an insurance industry that we trust to do the right thing when natural disaster strikes is important for the confidence of a community. In the wake of the Queensland floods, the Federal Government decided to implement a standard definition of flood for residential insurance policies, and they are also working with the Insurance Council of Australia to provide Australia-wide floodmapping so that risk can be better understood. At the moment, if you live near a waterway, you may not know, or have ready access, to historical and geological information about the flood risk in the event of inundation.

SWAMPED: The increase in natural disasters has put us on high alert. The insurance companies are making decisions about the cost of premiums based on that information, but several contacted by the Bendigo Weekly were not willing to share that. One reason for their unwillingness must be the lack of reliable flood mapping processes which means the information is not as reliable as it could and should be. But that leaves people in the dark, both about the flood risk to their own property and about the likely cost of insurance. There have been instances of insurers refusing to renew policies, based only on the fact a residence has a Bendigo postcode, and others have been shocked to find their premiums have skyrocketed, because an insurer has included non-optional flood cover for the first time.

Industry experts say all this uncertainty and bad news may settle down in the coming years, but that depends not only on the global financial market (likely to remain volatile) and also the weather (ditto). Add to that the fact that, with costs rising so dramatically, many residents may not be able to afford insurance, or may choose to insure with one of the many companies popping up online offering cheaper but less comprehensive service. Troubling and uncertain times ahead: but as one industry insider said, there may be a good outcome. Flood mapping may be both improved and become more readily accessible, so that residents and the community can better prepare for the unlikely but possible event of a disaster.

Ramsay’s roll of honour This year Steve took some culinary advice from the TV royalty of cooking. Out with Nigella and Jamie and welcome to centre stage Gordon PHEW, that’s all over for another year. I did take the easy route over Christmas though, internet Christmas cards, phone calls to family. No sticking on stamps for me. I did baulk at text greetings though. Don’t think it says enough. As in “Hi, I am sending this to my whole contact list so I can get it over in 10 seconds flat”. My policy over the years has reduced my incoming cards, of course. But I did receive one handmade card that was magnificent, thanks Annika. That’s really what it should be about. Make it, or don’t bother. My home-made efforts would be appalling as I am the type who is covered in glue as soon as the lid is off. Glitter and glue all over. In the big lead-up to Christmas I watched some of the celebrity chefs for some ideas. Nigella Lawson came up with one years ago that has served me well over the years. Even Jamie has thrown in a goodie once in a while. Nigella’s snow-flecked brownies make my mouth water at the

STEVE KENDALL ON LIFE

thought of them. Anyway, Nigella’s brownies aside, Gordon *%$#@ Ramsay came up trumps this year. It seems he has modified his behaviour by bringing in his daughter to help. No way is he going to drop the F-bomb in front of her. He explained it all really well, and showed me the eye fillet wellington. Goodness me, what a beauty, must try that, I thought. The long-suffering Mrs Kendall was in approval, and to be honest she would be doing the hard work... so we were on. I went off to buy all the tasty morsels which would make up the dish for Christmas Day. I dodged the supermarket and headed for the butcher. A magnificent queue faced me, but I stood my ground. I worked out the weight and cut, handed over the debit card and took my purchase, then off to the deli for the parma ham, the nuts and

mushrooms and puff pastry. It was going to be a doozy. I piled the goodies onto the counter at home, very proud of my buys. It was all there. Come the big cook up, and Mrs K seared the meat as Gordon had said, rolled out the cling film, layered the parma ham, wrapped the meat, twisted the cling film to form a sausage shape and into the fridge for a rest. The meat that is, not Mrs K. Then lay out the pastry, cover with the blitzed and dried nuts

and mushrooms, and wrap up the meat, using the cling film trick again for even wrapping. In the oven after a rest, the wellington not Mrs K... and wait. Yum. Out came the beast after the prescribed time... the wellington, not... The dish looked perfect, just the right colour, texture and all the things which make the meal right. Okay, I bet you thought I left the cling film in the mixture.

No, it was an absolute perfect dish. After we’d eaten and relaxed Mrs K investigated the costings I had not even looked at. With the eye fillet and parma ham, and the mushrooms and nuts, not forgetting the pastry I had spent a fair total. “The $80 sausage roll,” Mrs K said, with an accusing glance in my direction, but believe me, Gordon *%$#@ Ramsay had been right about the taste, worth every cent.

HEARING MUSIC’S CALL

BEN CAMERON AS far as career ambitions go, solo performer Luke Owens was forced to shift the goal posts four years ago. Back in 2007, a 15-year-old Owens was a budding sports star, dreaming of emulating his uncle Ben (Kinnear), by one day pulling on the black-white jumper of Collingwood. Also a talented runner, Owens’ career path took a massive turn one day however on the track at Olympic Park, in the state final for the 100 metre sprint, when his hamstring suddenly separated from his femur. From a music sense, it was the injury he had to have. “I was coming first, I remember the whole of Weeroona College getting behind me,” Owens recalls. “Then I was like ‘wow, so that’s what it’s like to do a hamstring.” The injury ruined not only his sprinting ambitions, but of making it with the Bendigo Pioneers, who he was training with at the time. “The doctor told me to find something else to do for six months,” Owens says. “So that’s when the whole music thing started again.” Never one to sit still for long, Owens found the answer to idle hands in a cupboard. “At the start I was just shattered (about the injury),” he admits

“But I opened the cupboard (and) there was this old acoustic guitar that hadn’t been played in years, which was missing a couple of strings. “I’d forgotten how much I missed it (the guitar), how much I missed music in general. “I felt like this whole new dimension opened up for me.” Seven months later, Owens had physically recovered, but something far less tangible had changed. “I was fully fit for competition again, (but) I had a whole new love for music,” Owens says. “I still trained with the Pioneers but something drew me towards performing, something I’d never felt before. “This whole time I’d been focused on competition and winning, I had this new found freedom where I could express myself with music. “I didn’t have to be the best, I don’t have to be the greatest.” Owens started taking lessons with friend, Chris Morley, who became a mentor. “He’s been the biggest influence on my life, not just in a music sense but on a person level,” Owens says. “He’s what I want to aspire to. He encouraged me to pursue my music and write my own songs. “He told me ‘you might have a fast left hand, but it’s your right hand that divides a legend from a wannabe.”

ROCK BOTTOM

Luke Owens Today, Owens is an accomplished solo performer, who hosts Golden Vine Open Mic nights from time to time, and sang on Star FM’s Under The Covers segment last November, dedicating a version of Kate Miller-Heidke’s Space They Cannot Touch, to friend Olivia Wright, who died in a car accident. “I didn’t know her well... but I thought ‘that could of been me, it could of been anybody close’,” Owens says. “I thought if I’m going to go on the radio and be heard by hundreds of listeners, I want to make it something meaningful.” Owens has also enjoyed performing in musical theatre, and appeared in Jesus Christ

Superstar at The Capital. It’s where he met David Turpie, who he eventually formed new duo Sattwa with. “He was just shaking a maraca,” Owens remembers. “But it turns out he plays keyboards, guitars, the bass, trumpet, drums, he’s that talented, I’m so lucky to be involved with what he’s doing.” 2012 for Owens is all about honing his craft and touching as many listeners as possible. “If I can put a smile on people’s faces wherever I am, that will be my biggest accomplishment,” he says. Luke Owens plays Canterbury Gardens for the Summer in the Parks program on Friday, January 13.

ROCK BOTTOM is a new hard rock program to 106.7 Phoenix FM, which airs each Sunday night, hosted by chronic rock dog and b.entertained contributor Mick Griffin. A voracious supporter of live music throughout Central Victoria, Mick is a champion of all music styles, however his first and abiding love is for loud, dirty rock ‘n’ roll. With specialist community radio shows covering every conceivable genre bar highenergy, no-nonsense rock ‘n’ roll, Mick saw an opening and a potential audience for a program celebrating all things rock. Rock Bottom touches on some classic acts, however the emphasis is very much on the now. With a rash of hot new rocking bands appearing on the national and international scene, there is a wealth of quality acts whose talents deserve exposure at any level.

Mick Griffin Mick is adamant that Rock Bottom will be a platform in promoting Central Victorian talent, with acts such as Black Aces and Made in China already getting healthy airings. Rock Bottom airs Sunday nights from 8pm to 10pm on 106.7 Phoenix FM and can be streamed live at http:// phoenixfm.org/ . There is also a facebook page, Rock Bottom Radio Show.

Chain of events recalled

Zak’s geared up

Bendigo and district Cycling Club will be holding a reunion in March after the Bendigo international Madison. We hope to be able to bring you some of the history and character of one of Australia’s most successful country cycling clubs and feel sure that local cycling identities will be able to fill the gaps with colourful accounts at the reunion. The Sandhurst Bicycle Club was formed in 1880 and the Sandhurst invincible Bicycle Club formed in 1881. eaglehawk, elmore, Castlemaine and Maldon all had Bike clubs formed around this time. in 1897 the League of Victorian Wheelmen was formed and in that same year the Victorian Amateur Cyclist Union was also established. The professional riders and the amateur riders were to remain under the two different bodies until well into the second half of the 1900s before they combined. The pros rode events like The Austral Wheel Race and The Melbourne to Warrnambool Road Race and the amateurs strove to make it to the Commonwealth and olympic games, although most did not succeed. Bendigo cycling in the 1930s was raced around the roads in winter and started and finished in Pall Mall. Later in the 1950s and 1960s they started every Saturday at don Murray’s pub

eddie barkla in Lockwood Road, Kangaroo Flat. Track cycling was raced at what is now known as Weeroona oval, this had a high wooden fence around it and was a very flat bitumen track. Racing was also held at ‘The Showgrounds’ now the Tom Flood Sports Centre. This was a cinder track until the 1950s when it was made into a bitumen track with very slight banking. gradually the track and banking was improved over time, especially after the great Russell Mockridge fell on the top bend when he was sweeping around the field in a wheelrace final. Racing during the 1950s and 1960s was segregated to Pros and Lilywhites (amateurs) and the rules clearly stated that if an amateur received money, no matter how small, he was then declared a professional and could not compete in olympic and Commonwealth games. Because of these antiquated laws the Bendigo Professional Cycling Club

and the Bendigo Amateur Cycling Club remained as two separate bodies until finally they were able to become one body, the Bendigo and district Cycling Club. it took until the mid1980s when the Bendigo City Council of the day agreed to let the club build clubrooms on Council land if they strictly adhered to their guidelines . These clubrooms were built by voluntary labour from club members. The club covered every trade and the job was supervised by Caps Vernon, the money was raised and the work done by everyone in the club helping in any way possible. The clubrooms remained this way until the council, with government funding, was able to upgrade them and the surrounding area to give an even better result for the club members, visiting cyclists and spectators alike. The club still hosts cycling events of international, national and State level and has been a successful seed bed for many cycling stars over the years. Looking forward to seeing you on the road soon, god willing.

WiTH the Australia Road national Championships looming this weekend in Ballarat, leading Bendigo cyclist Zak dempster is primed and ready to compete in what is expected to be another gruelling Battle of Buninyong. dempster, part of a large Bendigo contingent battling it out for the coveted green and gold championships jersey, has put almost 4000km into his legs over the past two months, in preparation for the 163.2km elite Men’s Road Race on Sunday. And with another european season under his belt, where he rode as a stagiaire for HTC-Highroad, dempster is set for big things in Ballarat. However he admitted he would have to race not only strong, but smart, to win in Ballarat, which is believed to have the best field in the event’s history. “it’s not just about having the most incredible set of legs, you have to play the bluff a bit,” dempster said. “it will be a race of attrition, but you have to use your head. “(But) i just want to let my legs do the talking.” dempster’s career continued to bloom in 2011 as the former Bendigo international Madison, Melbourne to Warrnambool and Australian Under 23 Time Trial winner took out the tough Tour of doonhame in Scotland, the dengie Marshes Tour race in essex, Severn Bridge Road Race and the Rutland-Melton CiCLe Classic. don’t need everything to go right to win. “i’m a bit older now, and i’m ready to have a crack at some big international events.” The strong Bendigo and central Victorian contingent of riders competing in Ballarat this weekend includes darren Lapthorne, Lachlan norris, david Pell, david Fairburn, Robbie Hucker, Peter Ladd, Kate Finegan, Katherine o’Shea and Sean Finning.

Your horoscope Aries (Mar 20 - Apr 19):

0601

Cancer (June 21 - July 21):

Let’s look at the big picture since 2009. Pluto opposes your sign, challenging you to recognise your worth in some way and stand up for yourself. It is difficult, but you are making inroads. This press will continue for a decade. Uranus moved into your territory of career and social contributions.

Libra (Sep 23 - Oct 22): Saturn has been in your sign since November of 2009. Since that time you have felt the need to grow yourself up, to mature, and to solidify your identity, probably in a new or additional field of work. Saturn will continue to be in your sign until November of 2012. You have a few more months to bring a sense of completion to these tasks.

Capricorn (Dec 21 - Jan 19): This is the first year of four which bring major transition and change to your life. For 2012 the summer and fall are particularly notable. On the mundane level you likely will see significant changes among those in your family. As this happens, your own attitudes about how families should be will open to the unusual, even eccentric.

Leo (July 22 - Aug 21):

Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21):

Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 17): As Neptune departs your sign in February, it may carry away the last vestiges of an illusion you have had about yourself or your direction in life. It has been with you for 14 years, so the change may be startling. Perhaps a long held spiritual belief is dissolving or becoming much less a priority.

Mars, your ruling planet, is preparing to go through a retrograde cycle as the year begins. This happens roughly every 28 months, so you have experienced it many times. On this visit the slowdown is in your house of work and health. You may find it a challenge to move forward with your goals in either of these areas until the end of April. Do not give up or you will lose ground. This is a necessary plateau period.

Taurus (Apr 20 - May 19): You will have over five more months of Jupiter in your sign before it moves on in mid-June. This placement represents expansion of your life through philosophy, travel or education. It oftentimes promotes the “flow” in your life so that things are easier than they have been in the past.

Maintaining your health has become a priority in the last three years. You do not have much wiggle room there, so exercise and diet are a major part of your daily activities now. You realize more than most that this is the bottom line and nothing else in your life works without these basics.

The flow of 2012 will begin in slow motion for the first four months. It may feel to you as though you are repeatedly treading old ground. You are looking for somewhere to connect and put down roots. In May you might encounter a physical or emotional blockage that demands healing before you move forward.

Virgo (Aug 22 - Sep 22):

Sagittarius (Nov 22 - Dec 20):

Gemini (May 20 - June 20):

Whatever illusions you might have about your usual work in the world are beginning to crack. At the same time you have a growing need to give that which you consider valuable back to society. You seek a mission which will re-enchant your everyday life and give you a sense of meaning.

The first four months of this year could feel like you are trudging through molasses. In the outer world many accomplishments will be slow and tedious. Even your physical body may feel sluggish. Your primary focus is internal healing at this time.

Beginning last July your opportunities related to work have begun to open. You are able to make more income than before. In addition your physical and emotional health have improved. This good fortune continues through the month of March, 2012.

Pisces (Feb 18 - Mar 19):

During 2011 you began to wake up to your mission in life. Your entire history has prepared you for what is beginning to happen now. The Piscean, who often feels like a bystander in the world, is coming into a true calling. For quite a long time you have been preparing for bringing your voice of inspiration and healing to the world.

wickets), Keiran Nihill (13 wickets), and the return of Tom Hartney from Bendigo Cricket Club, you would expect them to continue on their winning way. West Bendigo are well positioned in second spot with Travis O’Connell (240 runs) and Glen Wallis (211) leading the way and Bradley McHugh (14 wickets) and Dion Prange (10) their leading wicket takers. Mandurang are once again in contention in third spot on the back of some good performances from Matt Giri (345 runs) and Leigh Haw (15 wickets). Two much-improved teams this season are Emu Creek and Maiden Gully with Frank McCarthur (216 runs) and Simon Marwood (119) and Justin Hancock (11 wickets) for Emu Creek. For Maiden Gully, Mark Smith (222 runs) is having a consistent season with the bat with support from Paul Martin (181 runs) and young 16-yearold spinner Hamish McCartney (13 wickets) leading the bowling.

Gliding duo flying high

Miggy’s rapid rise BDCA batsmen take note. Bendigo United’s premiership quick Miggy Podosky is yet to reach his best, despite dominating the competition so far. Sitting on top of the ladder, the Redbacks are on course to avenge last year’s 94-run grand final loss to Strathdale-Maristians. And pivotal to their performance has been Podosky with 19 wickets at an average of 12.74 from just 83 overs. But in a warning to A Grade batsman, he’s yet to fully recover from a broken ankle he sustained last year playing basketball. “I’m not bowling as fast as I have in the past,” he said. “It (the ankle) hurts a lot after matches.” However a modest Po-

THE second half of the Emu Valley Cricket Association is shaping up to be an absolute cracker. Apart from United, who are sitting comfortably on top of the ladder, less than one game separates second and sixth positions on the ladder with another two sides less than a game behind sixth spot. So realistically, there are eight teams still in contention for a finals birth and that doesn’t include our reigning premiers, Spring Gully. Gully would need to win every game and need some results going their way, to make finals action in March. However Spring Gully boast two of the top three batsmen in the league, with Ricky Mannix (251 runs) and Shaun Makepeace (249), with only Mandurang recruit Matt Giri (345) ahead of them. As stated earlier, United lead the Division One ladder, and with Forbes Klemm having a break out season with 246 runs, and the consistent Alexander Collins (194 runs and 10

PREMIERSHIP SUCCESS: Miggy Podosky and Dave Bicknell. dosky said the secret to his 2011/12 success has been the bloke bowling up the other end. “Without a doubt in my mind, strong bowling partnerships with whoever I’m bowling with at the other end is what has got my wickets,” he said. “And some luck. Building pressure from both ends is the key.” Podosky said the Redbacks’ early season form had been a great result, considering the change in personel from last year.

“At the start of season we had a fairly new look side and heaps of people outside of the club thought that we would be nowhere near as good as we have been this season,” he said. Meanwhile former Test batsman Matthew Elliott looks certain to reappear for Bendigo against Strathfieldsaye after a knee injury, while in other Round Nine matches, Sandhurst plays Golden Square, StrathdaleMaristians host Huntly/ North Bendigo and White Hills take on Kangaroo Flat.

ON A HIGH: Peter Raphael and Frank Van Der Hoeven with Bendigo Gliding Club’s PW-6, claiming the Come and Get It trophy at Mount Beauty. TWO intrepid members of the Bendigo Gliding Club flew to Mount Beauty on New Year’s Eve, to claim a trophy dubbed “Come and Get It”. Frank Van Der Hoeven and Peter Raphael flew the club’s two-seater PW-6 263km across Victoria to the Mount Beauty Gliding Club. The Come and Get It trophy, initiated by the New South Wales Gliding Association, can be claimed by members of other gliding clubs who are prepared to fly the distance from

their club to that of the current holder. The trophy had remained in the possession of Canberra Gliding Club from 1977 until March 2009, when members of the Mount Beauty Gliding Club flew 200km across the alps to claim it. Frank and Peter took five hours to fly to Mount Beauty from the club’s headquarters at Raywood, at times climbing in thermals to over 8000 feet (2438 metres) as they approached the mountains.

They flew back to Raywood the next day, because part of the prize’s conditions are that the claimants must fly away with the trophy. Less helpful gliding conditions on New Year’s Day meant they could only get 53km before they had to land at Whorouly East, completing the journey by car and trailer. Bendigo Gliding Club is anticipating some “serious attempts” by New South Wales clubs to return the trophy to its home state in coming years.

BENDIGO sailing sensation Glenn Ashby, pictured, has got off to almost the perfect start in the A Division of the Catamaran Australian Championships, taking out the first two races on the nine-race card, on Tuesday.

On Lake Macquarie, north of Sydney, Ashby won the opening race in his 18-foot catamaran, then backed it with victory in the second, in windy conditions of up to 18 knots. Then on Wednesday he claimed a first and second placing, in “postcard” sailing conditions, then first again on Thursday.

Ashby, a member of Team New Zealand, has dusted off the cobwebs in fine style, as it’s been nine months since he’s sailed in A Class. “It’s been a bit like riding a bike, I was a little rusty at the start,” Ashby said, who also took out the Invitational race on January 2.

Despite the event bringing together three current World Champions, as well as three former Olympic medallists, Ashby however, with seven A-Class World Championships to his name, was the favourite before the event began. Photo: ANDREA FRANCOLINI
