THE City of Greater Bendigo council is considering giving chief executive officer Craig Niemann only an interim contract extension later this year. Mr Niemann was appointed in December, 2007, after the death of John McLean three months earlier. With his contract up in December, shortly after the election, council is considering leaving Mr

Niemann’s long-term future on hold and in the hands of the new council. Council will decide in the middle of the year whether to re-appoint Mr Niemann permanently. A move to do otherwise would be seen as controversial, given Mr

Niemann’s support among council staff and the community and business sectors. However, council is looking at all its options, including re-advertising and leaving the decision up to the new council. Mr Niemann received a pay rise

of up to $10,000 last financial year, bringing his salary to somewhere between $270,000 and $279,999. Epsom Ward councillor Lisa Ruffell said it was good governance to look at options other than reappointment. “If you are going to lock some-

IT’S no surprise flags were the order of the day yesterday as Bendigo residents took Australia Day to their hearts. Celebrations were held across the city, with citizenship ceremonies leading the festivities. But after the oaths and the speeches it was down to waving the flags and back to the sausage sizzle.

AUSTRALIA DAY

Bob pushes the community word Visiting Father praises the people of Eaglehawk By ROSEMARY SORENSEN

FATHER Bob Maguire is not one for waving the flag, preferring to think of himself as a patriot, rather than a nationalist. But for this year’s Australia Day celebrations, he bought a couple of flags to attach to his car, in response to a University of Western Australia study claiming a correlation between flag-flying and racism. “I thought bugger it, the outspoken Father Bob told the gathering at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park, where he was the Australia Day ambassador. “I’m going to buy a couple of flags and put them on my car for the drive to Eaglehawk – I thought I’d lost them around Macedon. In a speech that took in everything from the Catholic Church (“We don’t want good work done out of the Church on the streets – they think it will frighten the natives) to babies

I’m going to buy a couple of flags and put them on my car for the drive to Eaglehawk (“they’re born these days with long thumbs – for texting), the recently forced-to-retire South Melbourne priest received a warm welcome from the crowd. “I’ll tell you the truth, you go and live it, he said. “We need people who can explain ourselves to ourselves. He looked around at the people sitting on the grass and on fold-up chairs, eating sausages and watermelon, and told them,

“You’re not flash. “I know you resent it, when I say that, because you say, excuse me, I’ve just paid $1.3 million for my new house, but that’s not flash. “It’s what’s in your heart that’s flash. He praised Eaglehawk’s community network, the organisation behind Our Place, Our Shed and Our House, which, Father Bob said, is exactly the kind of “we, me thinking that is important. “It’s about community first, and society second, he said. “Eaglehawk has history on its side, and it has to be passed on to the new people who are coming here. Taking another gentle and ambiguous swipe at the nationalism of Australia Day, he said that while it was not approved of by the In-

ing, Father Bob said he hoped he hadn’t offended people too much. The good thing about driving up the highway on Australia Day, with his little flags fluttering, was that he left behind his reputation as a “pinko-commie. “Here I can say what I like, he said.

Bill takes the Aussie pledge BILL HEARNE is one of our newest Australians, making his affirmation as a citizen at the ceremony held in Bendigo yesterday. That now makes all seven Hearnes dinky-di, with Bill and eldest son William taking part in this year’s Australia Day ceremony a little later than the rest. “The main reason we all decided to become Australian, Bill said, “was because we got fed up with people calling us Poms. “Now, when they say that, we can say, well we’re Australian actually. Bill isn’t miffed to be called a Pom because he thinks the word is derogatory. When it comes to traditional sporting rivalries he’s quick as anyone to bag the English, because he’s Welsh.

A mad keen rugby fan, when it comes to the English rugby side, “I hate them as much as the rest, he said. He decided to take citizenship, and speak the affirmation publicly, to become an Australian. “I am quite happy to make the oath, he said. “I did that when I joined the army and it’s the same here now. “If we decide that we want to do more, like join the reserves, we can do that now. While he said he has no “political aspirations, Bill was also happy to come up with three things he’d like to see happen in his new country. First up, he’d like to see a better awareness of gun control.

“I was shocked when I saw the number of guns registered here, he said. Second is better internet coverage, which he hopes the NBN rollout will help, “but it’s taking a long time. And third, “cheaper beer prices – even though this new Welsh-Australian only tends to drink Guinness or cider. Nineteen people took the citizenship pledge yesterday, at the Australia Day ceremony at Lake Weeroona, coming from all over the world, including India, Thailand, Iran and Scotland. Australia Day is the most popular day to take part in the affirmation ceremony with 13,700 people involved in ceremonies around the nation yesterday.

Push continues for upgrades DISSENT is growing among Chum and Barnard street residents over the Bendigo Road Transport Strategy. Despite only two submissions objecting to an upgrade of Chum Street in the initial strategy, 248 residents have signed a petition urging council and VicRoads to reconsider their position. Petition organiser Francis McCormick was disappointed the proposed duplication had been left out of a council research paper, which proposed a number of changes to the strategy. “It obviously started

off as a case of ‘not in my backyard’, but the concerns have become bigger than that,” he said. “The proposed duplication would go past pools, the hospital, tennis courts.

Call for council review rejected

By ANTHONY RADFORD and BEN CAMERON

ONE of the authors of a plan calling for an independent review of the City of Greater Bendigo council have accused councillors of being afraid, after they rejected it this week. Avid council watchers Ted Coleman and Michael McKenzie put forward the review proposal late last year. They claim up to $5 million could be saved each year, and are calling for an independent review to look at this claim, and many others. One of the main reasons for the review is council’s organisational structure. Council currently manages a budget of about $140 million. It has five senior directors and 31 managers. The City of Greater Geelong manages a $245 million budget, has five senior direc-

tors and only 25 managers. Four former mayors have supported the review. Council voted 7-2 against the plan this week. Mr Coleman said he was not surprised. “They are afraid. I don’t know what of, but they are afraid,” he said. “They have chosen to be negative and attack it and I don’t understand it. “Underneath it all, they believe this has something to do with the coming elections and they are scared. It has nothing to do with it.” Most of the councillors who voted against the plan said the issues should have been taken up with the State Government, not the council. “That really annoyed me,” Mr Coleman said. “They knew damned well we did that last year. We told them we did it and they chose to ignore it.

RETURN: Cr Rod Campbell with his wife Alison at the meeting. “The officers have played a red herring game to muddy the proposed review. Maybe they fear they may lose their present strong hold on council’s direction.” In a passionate and sometimes heated debate, North West Plains Ward council-

lor Bruce Phillips was one of the more outspoken against it. “An independent review is a cop out, an absolute cop out,” he said. “I’ve got some experience with organisational reviews... from my experience you

need a compelling reason for a major review. “Compelling reason would include political will, abysmal performance, dysfunction and outmoded service delivery, and I’m not convinced any of these conditions apply.” Eppalock Ward councillor Rod Campbell, in his return to council after more than a year off due to illness, and Sandhurst Ward councillor James Reade pushed for the government to be questioned, despite it already happening. “This review is aimed at the wrong level of government,” Cr Reade said. “We have enough reviews... we make good decision with the information put in front of us. “I have full confidence we are on the right track.” Eaglehawk Ward councillor Peter Cox rejected claims

council was on the right track. “It’s a nonsense that we are accountable only through elections,” he said. “A review could save the city millions of dollars. “This is not a witch hunt of councillors. It’s about looking at efficiencies. “I support the review because it goes hand in hand with our council values.” Cr Cox said the council had performed poorly in key areas. “We do very poorly with public consultation,” he said. “We’ve had an appalling effort in waste... spending up to $20 million over the next five years to transport our waste to Melbourne is not sustainable.” Epsom Ward councillor Lisa Ruffell agreed. “What are we so afraid about? This review makes good business sense,” she said.

Thumbs up for CBD apartment THE City of Greater Bendigo council has approved another CBD commercial and apartment plan. The $3 million, three-storey building on the corner of Mitchell and Mollison streets will include a ground level of retail with four shops, and a first-floor office space with two tenants. The top floor will be set back from the road, and will include four apartments, ranging in size from 125 square metres to 165 square metres. Sandhurst Ward councillor James Reade praised the proposal. “This is another exciting development in our CBD,” he said. Cr Reade said the coun-

cil’s decision to waive the development’s car parking requirements was not important. “Car parking (issues) shouldn’t be a reason for stopping the growth and development of our city,” he said. The application comes four months after www.bendigoweekly.com.au revealed plans for what could be Bendigo’s biggest-ever private housing development nearby. A four-storey $12 million residential and commercial development will be built at 23 Wills Street, opposite Target, if approved by council. The building includes underground car parking, commercial and retail levels and two levels of apartments.

Call for 50m pool

Nearly 3000 residents have lobbied the City of Greater Bendigo council for a 50 metre pool at the proposed new aquatic complex in Kangaroo Flat. Kangaroo Flat Community enterprise chairman alan Besley said the enterprise had been active in the push for a 50 metre pool to be part of the proposed indoor aquatic centre. He said a petition containing more than 2700 signatures was presented to the City of Greater Bendigo before Christmas. ‘’The Kangaroo Flat Community enterprise worked in consultation with the council in developing the Kangaroo

Residents are unhappy with the poor facilities Flat Community Plan just over two years ago and the major issue from that was the need for a 50 metre pool, he said. “Clearly the residents are unhappy with the poor facilities available at the 30 metre pool located at Dower Park. “The enterprise hosted a

community meeting last august which was attended by several city councillors. “We now await the outcome of the aquatic Centre proposal which goes before the council at its meeting scheduled for Wednesday, February 8.’’ Member for Bendigo West Maree edwards also dipped into the debate, saying council and the State Government need to start construction as soon as possible. “The mayor has told me his preference is for a 50 metre pool at Kangaroo Flat, she said. “It’s time the council and the State Government got on with building it.

Crusoe Reservoir misses out on upgrade

Beach plan sunk THE City of Greater Bendigo council has quashed any thoughts of a beach being built at Crusoe Reservoir in Kangaroo Flat. Mayor Alec Sandner said there were higher priorities than spending millions of dollars on an inland beach. “At the moment the council’s energies on swimming spaces are directed to the proposed Kangaroo Flat pool,” he said. “It is very hard to imagine prioritising two major swimming options in the same area.” Cr Sandner said other projects within the Crusoe Park area have since taken a higher priority. ‘’The council has constructed walking paths, installed a fishing pontoon and a picnic area for all users to enjoy a range of activities at the park since the masterplan was released and these facilities are really valued by the many people who visit the area for recreational purposes,” he said. The snub is an embarrassment for Member for Bendigo West Maree Ed-

Despite meeting with Cr Sandner this week, Ms Edwards was still sticking to her guns. She said she believed given the “public support for the beach proposal, it was imperative council put it back on their agenda”. “Now would be an appropriate time while coun-

cil prioritises its budget for the coming months,” she said. Ms Edwards said it would be disappointing if the City of Greater Bendigo saw employing a spin doctor for $100,000 (a job advertised last week) as a greater priority than improving a community asset. Ms Edwards said council failed to invest-

igate the plan in full. “The interim report on the beach proposal recommended that a technical/ engineering assessment be carried out and an environmental impact assessment be done, however this further investigation did not proceed,” she said. “Council ditched the beach plan without a full investigation into how it could be achieved.”

AFTER almost three years, the Farmers’ Arms Hotel at Junortoun will be rebuilt. The hotel burnt down on February 3, 2009, days before Black Saturday. Police suspected arson

and re-opened the case in 2010. The City of Greater Bendigo council this week gave the green light for the rebuilding of the McIvor Highway pub to go ahead. The owners applied to

rebuild the pub in 2009, but VicRoads vetoed the plan, citing future plans to expand the highway. Strathfieldsaye Ward councillor Keith Reynard said VicRoads and the owners have worked to-

gether to come up with the current plan. “This pub was the centrepiece of the local area,” he said. “It has been missed over the past few years that it hasn’t been there.”

Pharmacy boss retires

By BEN CAMERON

YOU know him from that Eaglehawk UFS TV ad, surrounded by the many locals who have been on the receiving end of his benevolence. Laurie Fitzgerald might come across as the Pied Piper, but he’s naturally a shy soul, whose sublime community work has thrust him into the local spotlight. “I was the kid who used to hide behind other students in class when a question was asked by the teacher,” he said. “But through my job I’ve had to learn how to become a public speaker. “When I was in my 20s, the

thought of public speaking made me shiver all over.” His work as secretary, and, eventually, chief executive officer of EUFS, has been a fantastic ride, but like all great journeys, there’s always an end. And sadly after nearly 40 years, Mr Fitzgerald is hanging up the boots in the pharmacy game. “My old boss says when you get to the top, have an agenda, then get out. Don’t linger,” he said. “My agenda has been helping people. I’ll miss the staff and the customers a lot.” Mr Fitzgerald estimates the EUFS has pumped more than $100,000 back into local community groups in the past four years alone.

Council chases face-to-face talks over Fortuna Villa By ROSEMARY SORENSEN

CITY of Greater Bendigo council has committed to asking the Federal and State Governments to meet “face to face” to discuss the stalled redevelopment of Fortuna Villa. A petition from the Friends of Fortuna was voted on at the council meeting this week. The petition called for the council to write to both the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and the Premier of Victoria, Ted Baillieu, “expressing the importance of resolving the impasse that has developed over the future of Fortuna Villa and to arrange a meeting in Bendigo of all stakeholders”. The petition was accepted unanimously, according to Friends of Fortuna president Patrick Thwaites. “Fortuna is being used as a political football,” Mr Thwaites said. “We need an apolitical third party to call both sides to the table to negotiate face to face. “Council is that third party.” Friends of Fortuna is one of two groups that have been campaigning for action on the 19th-century Villa since its closure.

Fortuna is being used as a political football They will be joined next month by another group, organised by proprietor of the Goldmines Hotel, Rick Walduck, who wants Werribee Mansion, not Abbotsford Convent, to be the model for the redevelopment. Mr Thwaites, who authored a substantial and detailed plan for the site as a community-owned and run tourist attraction, said Fortuna is an “issue of national significance”. “The Friends of Fortuna see the acceptance of this petition as a great step forward,” Mr Thwaites said. “It is our earnest hope a meeting of all stakeholders will take place in Bendigo, possibly at Fortuna itself.”

THE City of Greater Bendigo council has given Bendigo Stadium approval to borrow almost $1 million to buy pokies, despite fighting against it acquiring more. The loan is needed in response to the changes to gaming licences, brought in by the former State Government. When Tabcorp and Tattersalls licences expire in August, Bendigo Stadium Ltd is seeking to finance and manage its own pokies, rather than sign on to a finance and management arrangement with a new subsidiary of Tabcorp. According to BSL, it estimates that signing with the subsidiary would see “approximately $8 million leave Bendigo

BENDIGO’S housing market is the highlight of regional Victoria, according to the latest data. The city’s median house price, according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, jumped 6.9 per cent in the past year, to $294,000. Prices rose 6.3 per cent in the December quarter. The jump dwarfs Ballarat’s rise of 1.8 per cent. Geelong’s median house price fell by 1.6 per cent and Shepparton’s collapsed by more than 12 per cent across the year. REIV chief executive officer Enzo Raimondo said the figures were impressive. “Of the three main regional centres, demand was highest in Bendigo, where the median house price increased by 6.3 per cent (in the quarter) to $294,000, he said. “In Ballarat, the increase was 3.6 per cent to $290,000 (for the December quarter) and in Geelong there was a drop of 2.3 per cent to $380,000. “Outside of the three larger centres, the corridor between Melbourne and Bendigo continues to record healthy demand, with prices increasing in Hepburn, Mount Alexander and Macedon Ranges.

Ben – It’s the local you know 3BO. We are here today at the Bendigo marketplace at Terry White Chemist, talking weight loss. Bendigo Weekly editor Anthony Radford joins me to discuss all things Central Victoria. First off today, it seems council has, as expected, put the kybosh on the Crusoe Res beach plan? Anthony – No surprises there. Last week we suggested this would happen. I think the real issue here, though, is one of process. What has happened is without speaking to council, Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards has said this should go ahead. She then met with council, who said no, and then she criticised council for not doing enough to investigate it. This project has always been council’s. For the past decade or so council has been behind this and has looked at it. It is not a State Government plan, or even an idea of Ms Edwards, so I think she has stepped on a few toes here with council and may have overstepped the mark. Ben – It is part and parcel of politicians to send out press releases. You are right, there should almost be some steps put in place. I would love to come out with press releases about ideas, but if it is not run through the right channels it looks like it is a vote-gaining exercise, really. Anthony – I am all for ideas being put by whoever wants to put them, but this was a council project from the start and should have been treated as such. Council has been in control of it for its entire life. Ben – Speaking of council, there is a meeting tonight. Much on? Anthony – Yes, a big agenda for Wednesday. Lots of planning decisions, plans for a council review are looked at and the latest residential and commercial development for the CBD will be voted on. This is a plan for a $3 million three-storey building on the corner of Mitchell and Mollison streets in the city. The first stage of the massive 800-lot subdivision at Huntly is also up.

Keep it simple GOOD to hear the Bendigo Weekly is joining the fight against our local obesity crisis. I hope government funding finds its way to things like free access to swimming pools and activities, and healthy afterschool care programs (to target the young before the problem becomes entrenched in another generation). Often those most affected have the least ability to afford to help themselves. Let’s ensure that whatever we offer is offered to all in need, not just those with access to money and knowledge, and fits in with all people’s lifestyles. We must remember the solution to obesity lies in expending more energy than what is taken in. Let’s hope they don’t turn it into a complex problem and use up all the money talking about how to address the issue. W Lauder, Bendigo

Golf club will survive WE read with interest and amazement the article “In the Rough” in the Bendigo Weekly January 13. On November 30, 2011, a general meeting was held at the Eaglehawk Golf club. It was called to dispel rumours which were, and apparently still are, circulating with regard to the future of the Eaglehawk Golf Club. Approximately 80 people were in attendance at one of the most positive meetings we have attended. The message was that the club was having a good year financially, with over 70 new members, and some promising plans for future growth. We were also told that there had been informal talks with Bendigo Golf Club, and an offer in writing from Neangar Park Golf Club, to discuss the state of golf in Bendigo. Eaglehawk Golf Club, and the land it is on, is owned by the members of the club, and has been so since it began 82 years ago. It is no more in “dire trouble” than any other club, and to say that it will “wither and die” is counterproductive and an affront to those members. Due to good leadership and sound planning, the club is continuing to provide a great golf

course, well maintained, and hopefully will do so for many years to come. Wendy Sheldon, Eaglehawk Joan Moss, Huntly

Double standards? CONGRATULATIONS Bendigo Weekly for tackling the epidemic of obesity that has rolled over Bendigo like a toxic tide in the last 10-15 years. But be warned – after you read this anecdote you may have bitten off more than you can chew! I was recently in a very large and busy pharmacy in Mitchell Street. I noticed that weight loss products were being promoted heavily but that by the cash registers there was a complete wall of lollies and chocolate bars for sale. I must have been looking confused as a chemist approached and asked if I needed assistance. “Not really,” I answered, “but with so many fat people in Bendigo why are you, as a health care professional, selling lollies and chocolates?” The chemist replied that there were many diabetics who often required a quick sugar fix. “Yeah right,” I thought.

I quickly asked: “Then why haven’t you put up a sign saying: “These items will only be sold to diabetics in need of a sugar fix.” He just walked away leaving me thinking: “He’s a health care professional but he cares more about his bottom line.” Powerful interests in the fast food and snack food industries have a vested interest in keeping people fat. Like the tobacco and pokies lobbies, they will fight every inch of the way to protect their profits. So, any attempt by government to intervene effectively, by way of advertising restrictions or a fat tax, will be resisted strenuously. I wonder how many calls you’ll receive from fast food outlets wanting to get on board and support the Better Health Club? Don’t worry, I’m not holding my breath! Steve Campbell, Kangaroo Flat

Beach too costly THE overwhelming majority in our community will see much merit in this week’s City of Greater Bendigo statement that the silly summer idea to dust off the ditched multi-million Crusoe Reservoir beach proposal is simply not a priority. Our local community, among

them those who actually live in and near to Kangaroo Flat, identified far more important needs for the future of Kangaroo Flat: the campaign for a new 50-metre pool and the state of vital local roads among them. We have been reminded of existing alternatives to a new beach that would have been situated within a nature reserve: Lake Eppalock and Cairn Curran are within close proximity to Bendigo and surrounding suburbs. And there was a healthy level of commonsense in considering what is best: it would have been reckless to divert millions of dollars to the Crusoe Reservoir beach scheme to the detriment of more pressing projects. The council has sensibly and methodically explained why the beach scheme was originally ditched and why it is not a priority now. It has also listened to the community on this occasion. A beach at Crusoe Reservoir is simply a cost we as a community cannot afford at this time. Time to celebrate the successes

THE ability of some people to attract attention to themselves by making an outrageous claim or comment all in the name of research can sometimes be astounding. This week, it was the turn of researchers from the University of Western Australia to step up onto the podium and claim the prize for idiotic statements to attract attention to research that probably should not have been funded in the first place. Apparently, according to the UWA researchers anyway, if you fly an Australian flag from your car

There must be a place for patriotism and for pride window these days you are essentially more than likely to be a white racist. An early contender for dumbest press release of the year saw the academics claim people who fly Australian flags on their cars have more racist attitudes than those without them. Just over 500 people at last year’s Australia Day fireworks (presumably in WA?) were surveyed and researchers allege that one in five people had attached flags to their cars to celebrate. Sociologist and anthropologist Professor Farida Fozdar says 43 per cent of those with car flags believed the White Australia

Policy had saved Australia from many problems experienced by other countries, while only 25 per cent without flags agreed. She said a total of 56 per cent of people with car flags feared their culture and values were in danger, compared with 34 per cent of non-flaggers. The study also claims 35 per cent of flaggers felt people had to be born here to be truly Australian, compared with 22 per cent for non-flaggers. Professor Fozdar said the research revealed differences in how people with car flags felt towards minority groups, including Aborigines and Muslims. In response to all this, a mate of mine posted this on Facebook earlier this week: Apparently my neighbour is a white racist for flying the Australian Flag out the front of his house. I must say I am surprised given that I attended his citizenship ceremony a few months ago and he is originally from India. Touche. There is no place for racism in our society, but there must be a place for patriotism and for pride, all of which must be balanced by a tolerance and respect for other peoples and cultures who have enriched our society and from whom we can all learn a lot. Australia Day is an opportunity for all of us to look back at where our nation has come from, to celebrate the successes of the past, to acknowledge and learn from the mistakes we have made and to be grateful we all live in and share the greatest country in the world. pk@bendigoweekly.com.au

Editorial Comment ANY moves to delay the reappointment of City of Greater Bendigo chief executive officer Craig Niemann should be avoided. There is a vocal part of the community that believes Mr Niemann is responsible for the Hargreaves Mall debacle, the Walk Bendigo fiasco and other public works dramas and should go. That is a credible argument, and one that should be aired, but it ignores relatively recent changes, and the argument that the buck stops with the councillors themselves. There is no doubt this council and Mr Niemann inherited some bad projects. The mall, Walk Bendigo and Mitchell Street were problems not of his management, but ones he has had to try and steer to difficult solutions. Mr Niemann is a modest and stable CEO, something that is valuable in local government. In recent years other councils have suffered from opposite personality types. He has had to juggle projects no one really wanted, and the current council couldn’t really fix. There are some projects council seems to be handling well. Whatever your thoughts about the $15 million multistorey car park, the project, this

Sand gets washed away at any beach. How much of our local economy gets washed away each week because Bendigonians are flocking down south to enjoy a sandy beach? I don’t see how the COGB can afford not to go ahead with the sand proposal. Posted by Beach Lover

I find this act so disgusting... Obviously the cat wasn’t desexed Nelly as if it was then there would be no kittens. On the other note of prosecuting the owners there could be some reason as to why the cat was out. The people who did

time around, has been well handled. It is on budget and will probably come in under time. That will be a good result for the city and, while being not quite big enough for what the city needs in the future, it will go a long way to easing CBD parking concerns. While council has been guided by the State Government on matters such as the art gallery redevelopment, Sandhurst Theatre and Bendigo Library, it has managed them better than they have in the past. On top of that there was a perception, a big one, that council and council staff weren’t listening to the community. That argument is entirely valid and one Mr Niemann, through recent staff changes, is addressing. The appointment of Darren Fuzzard (Presentation and Assets) and Pauline Gordon (Community Wellbeing) to senior directors’ roles is a step towards

changing the way council listens. So far, both new directors have thrown out the unconsultative plans for Mitchell Street and the mall playground and started afresh, giving stakeholders and the community an input before any ideas are had or plans are drawn up. This is a new and positive step. Yes, it is always important to challenge the status quo. Continued improvement comes from continued challenge, and the independent council review rejected this week would have been a positive step. It would have opened council’s operations up to the layperson. That aside, Mr Niemann has shown he has full control of his senior staff and is working with them to change the way things are done and how projects are handled. With that in mind, that progression should be allowed to continue.

Good Loaf manager Erin Pethybridge says the match-up with book-browsers has worked well three previous times. “We have the space, and it’s good to see people browsing among the book tables, Erin said. “We’ve had a good response from people too, they’ve enjoyed the extra activity on a Saturday morning. Erin said the trial was for four events, to be reviewed at the end of the final one, tomorrow. She said it has gone very well, with people commenting on how much they enjoyed the opportunity to browse among second-hand books in a

THIS is one of those books you have to go back to the beginning to read, once you’ve finished it. The first short chapter is very weird, so it’s important not to let it put you off. But once you’re in to this rather black comedy, it’s both enjoyable and thought-provoking. The premise of the novel is this: a man, invited by chance to a dinner party, goes upstairs to the bathroom, but ends up locking himself in the guest bedroom, and refusing to come out. He’s there through the course of the book, and as we read about the event from different perspectives, eventually we learn why he chose to do this strange thing. People’s lives intersect, sometimes very briefly and tenuously, sometimes with important consequences. The storytelling is very clever, but so too is the way Smith gives us insights into contemporary society, and how we can be cut adrift from the core values by so much that is fast, addictive, noisy and empty. Trying to hold on to decency in an unethical society is what this is about. A playful and lively novel. – Rosemary Sorensen

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, January 27, 2012

Steve weighs up the pros and cons of extreme kilogram loss

As I see it I have three lines of attack, the protein liquid diet, the lap band, and the new kid on the block – the gastric sleeve.

BendigoWeekly

LAST week the Weekly kicked off the Better Health Club, in a bid to teach the folk of Bendigo a healthier outlook. By chance I was booked into a mega session with Mrs Doctor. I don’t know how the poor woman puts up with me, bad jokes and evading answers. It’s like a day in parliament. Anyway, the mega session was all about the health plan for Steve. To my horror there were seven points which needed attention. Some were more needy than others. I had a head start on point one, having managed to halt the intake of beer on December 31. So today I can say I have not had a drink for 27 days. To non-drinkers that won’t mean much, but if you like a few beers you’ll know what an achievement that is. I won’t go through the list of seven: one, because I don’t understand it all, and two, I must retain a shred of secrecy for dignity’s sake. As I looked at the list with Mrs Doctor it seemed a lot would be solved or eased by good-old-fash-

ioned weight loss. Once again, you thinnies out there won’t understand this, but the 56.9 per cent of Bendigo residents who are over the line on weight will know it’s not always easy. I don’t understand why people gamble, but to those who do it’s impossible to stop. I guess overeating sits in the same camp. Anyway, there’s a handy little sum the medicos use to identify your condition.

It’s called body mass index, or BMI. A simple calculation will give you the magic indicator. You need your height and weight and a sum, I did mine online. Once you top a BMI of 25 you’re in the problem area, and I weighed in with a BMI of around 41. You can see the actual figures in the illustration on this page. Wow! It’s no great surprise to me of course, you tend to realise there is a problem when you’re 40kg overweight. Mrs Doctor has been trying to get me on the straight and narrow for a while now, and I am on firstname terms with the receptionists

at the medical centre. On my last visit, and buoyed by the success in cutting out the grog, I decided on drastic action. As I see it I have three lines of attack: the protein liquid diet, the lap band, and the new kid on the block – the gastric sleeve. The coward in me likes the idea of the protein shakes, seems a lot less invasive, I just wonder if I could stick to it. The lap band needs maintenance and seems to be very successful for people in 50 per cent of cases... that leaves the gastric sleeve. This is, put simply, the surgical removal of about 70 per cent of the stomach. Crikey. Now that does sound serious.

Mrs Doctor suggested I speak to someone who has had the procedure. “You could meet and have a b....” she was so close to saying beer, before she realised such a suggestion was a bit silly considering I was bolted to the wagon. We both laughed, and I mentally made the note to write this line. Well, I spoke to a man who had been through the operation and he had nothing but praise. Twenty-five minutes later I had certainly put gastric sleeving on the “possible” list, a close second behind the protein shakes. Extreme yes, but so are the health issues if I don’t do something. To be continued...

forget those overhyped warblers, the Spice girls. When it comes to genuine girl power, Stonefield are a four piece force of nature. ever since winning triple J’s Unearthed High competition in 2010, the rocking sister act from Darraweit guim have stormed the Australian indie music scene. But despite that buzz, and a coveted slot at glastonbury, the precocious nature of the band had overshadowed the quality of the songs, with some sections of the industry dismissing them as nothing more than a novelty. “It’s annoying sometimes, because people see us before they hear our music,” lead singer Amy findlay said of the backlash. “they thought ‘oh god, what are they going to play?’ We used to get that a lot. “We’d walk up to the venue and people wouldn’t take us seriously at all. “they didn’t give a crap, they were like ‘whatever’.” “It’s a bit frustrating, you have to really prove yourself.”

findlay admits the band of sisters are a little different to your average young, 70s influenced rock act. “It’s still not really normal I don’t think, to some people, which is kind of annoying,” findlay said. “that’s what happens sometimes, and it probably will happen for a long time, with the whole female thing.” Luckily, perceptions are slowly changing. “I can see how that (jealousy) would happen, but we’ve worked as hard as any other band, if not harder,” findlay said. “We know that we deserve it, we’re not just doing it because we’re full of girls, we’ve worked hard for it. “We can’t care too much about what other people think. “It’s definitely a lot different now, people kind of know us I guess.” rock history will record that it was at the one Movement festival when everything went a little sideways for Stonefield. “A booker for glastonbury happened to be in audience... he pretty much asked us straight after if we’d like to come

and play,” findlay said. “We didn’t really believe it. even for a while after we thought ‘Is it really going to happen?’ “But then it did, it was crazy.” on the back of a government grant, and the support of their parents (who worked as roadies) Stonefield played to tens of thousands on the John Peel stage at “glasto”, arguably the biggest music festival on the planet. “It was insane, completely insane,” findlay said. “When we walked on stage it was the most overwhelming feeling. “We couldn’t believe how massive it was, it was like this big city... a ridiculous amount of people. “It (the set) went pretty well... one of our amps stopped working, but we didn’t have much control over that as we only brought mum and dad, who aren’t too tech savvy, and our manager. “But it was fun, we got a really good reaction from the crowd.” With influences ranging from Led Zepplin to Jimi Hendrix, the girls must have

Stonefield some pretty hip parents, with an equally sublime album collection? “they like to think so,” findlay laughed. “We were lucky to have good music playing in the house when we were babies.” Cool enough to keep their kids in school, despite the band’s rapid success; findlay completed a Bachelor of Australian Popular Music degree

in 2010 (just as the band was starting to go gangbusters), while younger sister Sarah, about to go into Year 12, struggled with balancing music with homework. “She did have a lot of homework (last year), and she was struggling to get it done,” findlay said. “She was finding it really hard to focus, when we were travelling around.”

It’s hardly a typical rock ‘n’ roll distraction, but a reminder Stonefield are still very young, and it’s all very much ahead of them – apart from a slot at glastonbury. “We’ve been playing for six years, but the last year has been simply incredible,” she said. “We’re very fortunate.” Stonefield play the St Kilda Festival on February 12.

It’S not every day that you find yourself surrounded by gunwielding soldiers with your undies around your ankles during a drug bust in the hills of northern thailand … but that’s exactly what happened when Sunshine Coast songwriter Ange takats took up a job as a foreign correspondent in Bangkok. the Queensland musician has written a memoir about her Southeast Asian adventures and will be bringing the book, as well as her songs and stories, to regional Victoria when she performs at the Newstead Live Music festival this weekend. “I covered some bizarre stories during my two years in thailand. one of my first assignments was to report on a funeral for a water buffalo,” she said. “I arrived with my cameraman to see this big dead beast hanging inside a shed, with fairy lights wrapped around his horns, and flowers stuffed into his ears. “then there was the thai boob job story. We’d gone to film a woman who claimed to be able to

make breasts bigger by rubbing them with tiger Balm. “Half way through the shoot she decided she wanted to give me a freebie!” the book is a leap of faith for the songwriter, who penned most of the chapters in between her busy touring schedule. Ange first performed at Newstead in 2010 and she’s looking forward to returning to the country town, this time with her novel. “I love writing lyrics but there’s only so much you can say in a four minute song. this book has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time – a way of paying tribute to the cameramen, musicians and beautiful souls who shared life with me during my two years in thailand,” she said. Ange was 22 years old when she left the comfort of life in Sydney to work in the cut-throat, male-dominated, international media. from heroin addicts in Hanoi, to AIDS patients in Bangkok – the stories Ange covered overseas had a huge impact on her.

Ange takats “I was one of the few foreign journalists granted access to Burmese Democracy Leader Aung San Suu Kyi when she was released from house arrest in 2002. It was a monumental day – one of the most intense and stressful breaking news stories that I’ve covered,” Ange said. Since releasing her debut album, Aniseed Tea, in 2009 – Ange has spent the past two years performing at some of the country’s biggest music festivals

and building a steady following of fans. “there’s a strong link between thailand and my career as a musician because it was in Bangkok that I got offered my first paid gig. Many of the songs on Aniseed Tea were inspired by that time and I suppose this book is my way of sharing the stories behind those songs,” Ange said. Ange Takats plays at Newstead this weekend.

A GOLD DOUBLE PASS TO TIM MCGRAW AND FAITH HILL ROD LAVER ARENA ON TUESDAY MARCH 20 TH, 2012 The Tim McGraw & Faith Hill / Australia 2012 tour will be the first time the country music superstars have toured together outside of North America, will be Hill’s first time touring Australia and will include them performing separately and together. McGraw and Hill have been dominating the charts since the early 90s, and have produced 70 million record sales, 8 Grammys and 46 US number one singles between them. Hill, a multi-platinum crossover artist whose hits This Kiss and The Way You Love Me are recurrent playlist favourites on Australian radio, has performed at the famed Super Bowl

twice, The Academy Awards and The Grammy Awards. She has graced the covers of, amongst other publications, People Magazine, Marie Claire and In Style. McGraw returns to Australia following his Southern Voice tour in 2010. McGraw’s Brisbane Entertainment Centre concert sold out within fifteen minutes, shows in Sydney and Melbourne followed suit, and promoters added a second Brisbane and an outdoor show in Townsville. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are autonomously amazing, but together they’re a partnership powerhouse, particularly when it comes to touring.

Resident boom prompts Borough network growth By ROSEMARY SORENSEN

EAGLEHAWK is responding to the influx of new residents to the Borough with a plan to build business and community networks. “We have so many new people in our Borough now, we want to get them involved, chairman of the Business and Community Network 3556 Ross Mitchell said this week. “You see an ad for Evergreen Waters and they tell people it’s three minutes to Epsom and nine to Bendigo – nothing about Eaglehawk.

“We want to involve all our businesses, all our service organisations, our sporting clubs, so that if you move in you can look up our network and find a plumber, or a doctor or a sports club for the kids. “Eaglehawk has a great identity, but that identity is going to change or die away if the new people come in and don’t feel a connection to the community. The Network is planning Showcase 3556 to coincide with the annual Eaglehawk Dahlia and Arts Festival in March. fast is planned in the main street, to kick off the business expo at Workplace Eaglehawk in Upper Road. Mr Mitchell said Network 3556 is surveying residents about the expo, looking for ideas and interest. “We would particularly like to hear from homebased businesses who would like to promote themselves during the Showcase. “We want it to be an information day and we’ll launch our website. “From there, anything is possible.

TECH heads be ready, the next generation of mobile phone technology has arrived in Bendigo. Telstra this week launched Australia’s first 4G smart phone in the city. Telstra Country Wide Central Victoria and Sunraysia general Ray Pratt, said 4G, only available on mobiles over the Telstra network, would make the smartphone an even more inseparable part of our lives. “The HTC Velocity 4G delivers mobile internet speeds unimaginable

10 years ago, he said. “The leap to 4G means customers in Telstra 4G coverage areas can load web pages up to five times faster, video chat with fewer interruptions and use more mobile web services simultaneously. “4G also opens the door to an exciting range of emerging smartphone applications such as cloudhosted gaming and streaming music and video collections over the internet. For those who know about these things, the HTC Velocity 4G is pow-

ered by Android 2.3 operating software (upgradable to Android 4.0 in the future) and features a large 4.5 inch touch screen and a 1.5 GHz dual core processor for fast multi-tasking. Customers using HTC Velocity in 4G coverage areas will enjoy typical download speeds ranging from 2Mbps to 40Mbps and typical upload speeds from 1Mbps to 10Mbps. Outside of 4G coverage areas the HTC Velocity 4G switches seamlessly onto Telstra’s fast 3G mobile network.

Second line of inquiry

As the hub of the region, NBN benefits will flow from Bendigo to the entire Loddon Mallee. Bendigo is a regional hub, providing essential services to a population of some 300,000 people across the Loddon Mallee. The region is growing 50% faster than the average for regional Victoria, and Bendigo is predicted to increase in size by 39% over the next 20 years. Major national organisations choose to locate their head office in Bendigo, including Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, Bankmecu and Rural Finance. The Bendigo and Adelaide Bank alone employs more than 1000 people in our region. Early rollout and adoption of NBN broadband services will be critical in helping Bendigo grow and allowing the economic benefits to flow across the entire Loddon Mallee region.

It is remarkable how one event can have two different aspects, and that, when it comes to being investigated the two do not come together until the answers have been found. I have already given an account of the investigations into the break-in at the North Sandhurst State School and also regarding the arson of the building. Mr James Henry, the head teacher of the school, reported the matter of the school house having been broken into to Sergeant Fahey. Plain clothes Constable Walsh had been instructed by his superior officer to inquire into the matter. In order to secure whatever threads of information possible, Constable Walsh began by questioning many people in the neighbourhood of the school. Constable Walsh lived in Brodie Street, Quarry Hill. During his many conversations on the opposite side of the Bendigo area, in Irishtown, he came upon a significant piece of information. Constable Walsh knocked on the door of a weatherboard cottage opposite the North Sandhurst State School in Nolan Street.

with

james lerk the constable related to the occupant his line of inquiries. He was soon to receive the first positive breakthrough in this case. the cottage occupant was a German-born tailor named Herman Christian (Carl) Weibgen. Mr Weibgen was born on January 28, 1841 at Clausthal, Hanover and came to Victoria, via Liverpool, England, onboard the ship Daphne in 1868. In 1876, he married Mathilda theodore Haltermann, who went on to become a leader among the women members of St John’s Anglican Church, North Bendigo. there was a significant age gap between the couple, which was not uncommon in the 19th century. Mr Weibgen became a respected figure in both the German and Anglo communities of Bendigo. After his naturalisation he referred to himself as Carl. Mr Weibgen became prominent in the tailoring and drapery business in Bendigo. He was active in the trades Hall, promoting the rights and welfare of tailors and tailoresses. His status within the German community of Bendigo also grew

Mr Weibgen had become an active member of this important cultural and welfare organisation, almost since the time of his arrival in Bendigo. In 1881, he was so highly thought of that he had been presented with an illuminated address.

Constable Walsh was told by Mr Weibgen that on the Saturday morning, at about 2am, he had occasion to get out of bed and saw a light in the school room. this light was an unusual event, so Mr Weibgen went outside to investigating the matter. He was already cautious in relation to the happenings at the school,

He had occasion to get out of bed and saw a light in the school room as about a month earlier a portion of the building had been burnt down. As Mr Weibgen was about to step on the path, he heard very light footsteps which came running past his house heading north towards Ironbark Gully. Mounted Constable Gough came to Constable Walsh’s assistance and they finally narrowed down their leads to the Young children of Jackass Flat – the direction the youthful feet were running in. On the Friday night in question, widower John Young had gone to work, leaving the children in bed, apparently asleep. the eldest, 14-yearold Catherine, was left in charge. It was Catherine and sister Helena who induced young brother Henry to become part of their scheme. So they stole out into the darkness and perpetrated their crime.

SNAKES ALIVE: As Kayla Hanrahan recently discovered. Photo: GARRY PATERSON

K

AYLA Hanrahan of Bendigo got a lot closer to some unusual pets than she expected, when visiting Fish ’n’ Feathers recently. Steve Pilcher from Fish ‘n’ Feathers in Wills Street has been selling all sorts of pets for close to 13 years. “The bearded dragons are our most popular reptilian pet by far,” Steve

said, when telling the Weekly he is one of only two establishments allowed to sell native reptiles locally. A collection of lizards and snakes is discreetly tucked away at the back of the shop for those wanting a pet with a difference, “I sell upwards of 300 bearded dragons a year and am continually surprised at the demand,” he said.

Intending buyers need to acquire an annual Private Wild Life licence from DSE prior to taking delivery of their new pet. Of course if the thought of a cold blooded, scaly reptilian pet doesn’t turn you on, they have the more usual cuddly variety all the family can share in store. – NICK ATYEO

Oh... what a genie BENDIGO should consider itself lucky because we have our very own genie on hand. Oven Genie takes the mess and fuss out of oven cleaning and pride themselves on their impeccable service and cleaning standards. “When clients describe the outcome of their oven clean as ‘sensational’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘incredible’, then we know the job has been completed to the highest standards, they explained. Are you preparing your home for sale? It is always important to present a clean and tidy house to prospective buyers. Oven Genie can add that extra touch by ensuring your oven is sparkling clean when agents and buyers arrive to inspect your property. The secret to providing such an outstanding service is restricting the

number of oven cleans to be carried out over the week. “We book only 10 oven cleans a week so as to always ensure sufficient time is allowed for each and every job, and that client satisfaction is 100 per cent. They even offer clients The Genie Guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied then the Oven Genie will return and completely re-clean your oven free of charge. It is hard to turn down an offer like that. Whether it is the oven, range hood, cook top or barbecue which needs that professional clean, the Oven Genie has the solution. In only two to three hours, the Oven Genie will have your oven sparkling clean with no mess, no fuss and no odour. Call them today on 0437 448 904.

On a roll with great deals TTAGGERTS Discount Carpets and Vinyls is Bendigo’s clearance centre for a number of carpet manufacturers. Operating since 1988, Taggerts offer literally truck loads of top-grade carpets and vinyls and a great variety of floor coverings for sale, with most ranges unique to Taggerts. Ample customer parking has room for all vehicles up to semi-trailer size, enabling all customers to call in to have a look at their great range. Whether you are a tradesperson or an individual buyer, ask Trevor and Dora Taggert or Ed Yarrington about their house lot deals, from three rooms to a full house. If you want to buy wholesale, Taggerts will be able to give you a great deal on carpet rolls. They have recently taken delivery of a quantity of Belgian wool carpet, with similar fibres to berber carpet but

in a modulated loop loop, meaning it wears and cleans well. Normally retailing at $40 per sq.m uninstalled, this is on special for $40 per sq.m installed including underlay, a fantastic saving. Taggerts have numerous other clearance lines including nylon carpets and specialise in carpet tiles (firsts and seconds) which you can lay yourself. “We also have some beautiful vinyls from Europe in stock at the moment, 4mm thick, with a non-slip, non-scuff polyurethane treatment which we are selling at an unbeatable $49 per sq.m installed,” Trevor Taggert said. Taggerts stock all laying supplies such as hardboard, tapes, door trims and blades. Take a trip out to 18-20 Sandhurst Road, Eaglehawk soon. Phone 5446 1416.

From classes for toddlers through to those aspiring to competition ball-room dancing and all genres in between, there is bound to be something to get your body swaying or feet tapping. ANCE is in, according to fitness professionals in the worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2012. And why wouldn’t it be with great music to accompany your steps making it both fun and motivating. Z Fit Studios is Bendigo’s dance fitness studio with classes ranging from zumba to burlesque to pole dance and even adult Hip Hop and ballet. “Dancing will not only get you fit, it will improve strength, cardio fitness, balance, posture, flexibility and can target areas such as arms, abs, butt and thighs. Plus the benefits are both physical and psychological, allowing you to improve both your body and your state of mind,” owner and instructor of Z Fit Studios Saari said. “Many thanks Z Fit Studios, for putting a spring back in my step, which was sadly lacking before I joined zumba classes,” Barb, one of many of Z Fit Studios happy clients said. “I started at Z Fit Studios and

nearly a year later I have lost 33kg and five dress sizes. The people who run classes go above and beyond to make you feel welcome, a slimer and fitter Morgan said. “I love that all types of people attend classes, whether fit, unfit, a dancer or an ‘unco’, you just have to be keen to have fun and dance.” Z Fit studios can even organise your next party, from Hens, Pole and Burlesque parties to kids Zumbatomic birthday parties. So what are you waiting for? Z Fit Studios offer daytime and evening classes starting with a new term on February 6. You can visit zfitstudios.com.au for a complete timetable. You can attend class casually, buy a 10 class card, join up for a course or go for our unlimited classes – whatever suits your needs. CYCLING LOOK FOR THE SIGNS: Learn from your body when it needs recovery time.

It all went swimmingly Nana naps essential AUSTRALIA DAY – our own Nation’s day and long weekend. The roads are usually very busy, not only because of the holiday, but also because it is one of the last free weekends before schools go back. A familiar sight on our highways are the slogans warning us of the dangers of driving while feeling tired. The advice of the Road Traffic Authority is to take a power nap or get out of the car and revive your drive.

Statistics show that drivers are most at risk the closer they get to home Long weekends see service agencies offering cups of tea or coffee and a biscuit, encouraging drivers to take a break. The combination of the rest, the stimulant of coffee or tea, and food in the stomach all help to relieve the stress of driving and tiredness. Statistics show that drivers are most at risk the closer they get to home, trying to make the extra effort to reach home without taking a break. Quite often being over-familiar with the road and surrounds can have the effect of making us want to relax and feel we are already home safely. In the cycling community there is a bit of a standard joke about the nana naps we all have from time to time. After a long hard session out on the road on the bike, sitting down to relax often brings a sense

EDDIE BARKLA of drowsiness that is hard to fight off. The best advice is – don’t fight it off, learn from your body when it needs recovery time. This powernap will allow for the rest of the day to be met with a relaxed and recovered body and mind. Speaking recently with a semiprofessional cyclist on this matter, it was revealed that the powernap (only a nana nap for the over 50s) is integral to their intensive training schedule and is expected, not rejected. Refuelling the body with food and beverages that promote recovery may well, in some cases, mask the body’s need for the rest and recovery that the powernap delivers. I recall, however, an experience in my own health cycle where the nana naps (yes an over 50s specimen) were needed more often than just after we had been out on the bike exercising. To start with I put this off as just being tired and trying to put too much into the day. A trip to the doctor and some blood sugar tests indicated that I was bordering on being diabetic. My sugar levels were well above the normal expected levels. The answer was too much sugar had been introduced into my system through additives in my fluid intake. I now drink just water and am back to the regular nana naps as needed. The moral to this experience is: have regular checkups to test the vitals of blood pressure and sugar levels, along with cholesterol – all potential health risks as we age. Looking forward to seeing you on the road soon, God willing.

ONE of the region’s top swimming officials has praised the efforts of the Bendigo East Swimming Club, which mixed it with the best swimming clubs in the state at the Victoria Country Swimming Championships. Championship chief official Margaret Lang said East’s effort to finish fourth overall was a great achievement. “It’s a wonderful re-

sult for the club,” she said. “And Bendigo has a terrific facility in the Bendigo Aquatic Centre, it’s been a great three days. “The weather was perfect and the atmosphere equally good.” Almost 700 swimmers took to the water at the centre over the three-day carnival. Bendigo Hawks Aquatic finished in 24th place.

Round Two riders flock to Summer Series circuit WATCHFUL: Darren Lapthorne leads the breakaway.

ROUND Two of the Café Roubaix Summer Series drew a large crowd and large fields in three grades of excellent criterium racing on the Mayfair Park circuit last weekend. The Ronde Socks C Grade field was away at 8:80 for a 20 minutes-plus threelaps challenge in which Mat Runnalls showed he had learned a lot from last week’s third place, winning easily ahead of Tom Floyd and Michael Smyth. A huge Hume & Iser B Grade field of 28 riders then took to the circuit for their 30 minutes-plus three-laps race, with Nick Gates holding off the wily Ash Harding and then Oscar Stephenson.

Then it was the turn of the big guns, with 22 Symes Motors A Grade riders setting out to offer the large crowd a spectacle few would have imagined. Darren Lapthorne showed he was eager to go one better after last week’s thrilling finish, but David Pell, Shaun McCarthy and Jeremy McInnes were not going to let his have it all his own way. The awesome foursome lapped the field with three laps remaining, before Porsche Drapac’s Lapthorne went on to win ahead of McInnes and then the everconsistent Pell. Racing continues this Sunday morning at Mayfair Park.

Emu Valley Cricket Association – Division 1

Games’ mixed results SATURDAY saw the return of the two-day games for the Emu Valley Cricket Association with some very mixed results, with two sides who batted first in very commanding positions, one game already decided, another in the balance and one washed out. Yes, that’s right, a wash out. Mandurang scored an imposing 6/395 against Emu Creek, with Leigh Haw leading the way with 120, and good support from Cain Ladiges (88), Geoff Thompson (78 not out) and John Mariager (40). The best of the bowlers for Emu Creek was Justin Hancock with 3/109.

Golden Gully opening bowler Shaun O’Shea destroyed the Maiden Gully top order with the excellent figures of 7/56, as Maiden Gully were dismissed for just 125, with only Andre Clayton (42), Rob Brown (26) and Beran Marchesani (25) providing any resistance. Maiden Gully hit back late in the day to have Golden Gully 5/72 at stumps and the game back in the balance. United have already locked in first innings points after blasting Sedgwick out for just 68, with Cam Davie and Kieren Nihill taking three wickets a piece. United already have a size-

able lead, thanks largely to Alex Collins (87) and Jayde Mullane (43 not out), with a score of 2/151 at stumps. Spring Gully continued their recent good form compiling 284 against West Bendigo, with Shaun Makepeace (88) and Ricky Mannix (77) again leading the way, with good support from the evergreen Des Gilmore (60). Glen Wallis 3/45 was the best of the bowlers for West Bendigo as they resume on 1/15 this week. Marong will take on Axe Creek this week in a one-day game as no play was possible at the Marong ground.

Weekend challenge looms NEEDING to win all of its four remaining games to safely lock down a play off position, and with an injured Kristi Harrower, Bendigo Spirit coach Bernie Harrower is all too aware of the huge challenge that awaits his charges this weekend. Crunch time has officially arrived for the fifth placed Spirit, who face the two top teams next, with Liz Cambage’s Bulleen Boomers on Saturday night, and Adelaide on February 4. Harrower said his girls would be seeking redemption after an “unacceptable” loss to bottom placed West Coast by two points last Sunday in Perth. “It certainly is (crunch time),” Harrower said. “We need to go 4 and 0 going into the playoffs. It’s a big ask for us but at the end of the day, if we’re good enough we’ll get the job done. “We’re looking for some redemption after last weekend. “The loss to West Coast, it really stung us, it really put our plans into disarray.” Harrower said he gave his team one of his all-time great roasts after the West Coast loss. “I gave the girls a pretty hard time after the game, and they had some punishment

INVITATION GOES OUT TO MODIFIED CRICKET

ACTION: Bendigo Spirit versus Townsville Fire. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN on Tuesday night at training, which they certainly weren’t happy about,” he said. “I’ve had some tirades, I think this was probably the worst I’ve ever dished out. “But you make your bed, you lie in it.” Harrower said daughter Kristi would play despite ongoing problems with her Achilles. “She’s not 100 per cent but she’ll play,” he said. Assistant coach Jeremi Moule said the Spirit had the defence to restrict Bulleen’s

power players, but needed to hone its shooting efficiency. “Our defence has improved significantly, but on the weekend our poor shooting percentage cost us in both games,” he said. “The loss to West Coast was the lowest point of the season. “Given the context – at the end of the season and fighting for a finals spot – it was very disappointing. “The team has had one of its most physically challenging training weeks of the season.”

ARE you looking to get active, meet new people and have fun? If so, Strathdale Maristians Cricket Club invites people with a disability to participate in their modified cricket program. Sessions will be conducted every Tuesday night for four weeks from February 7 to 28. Sessions run from 4.30pm to 5.30pm at the Bell Oval on Reservoir Road and cost $3 per week. The club will provide all of the required equipment so all you need to do is wear comfortable clothing, sneakers, a hat and bring a bottle of water. “The sessions are open to people of all ages and levels of ability and the participants will be provided with a fun introduction to the skills and the game of cricket,” Sean McCann of Strathdale Maristians said. Sports Focus Project co-ordinator Laura Bradley said the modified cricket program was a great initiative. “We are very excited to support the Strathdale Maristians Cricket Club in providing this fantastic opportunity for people with a disability,” she said. For further information or to register contact Sean McCann on 0438 235 934 or Travis Ledwidge on 0438 466 034.

On the ball Future stars of the court to battle it out

By BEN CAMERON

WITH the 35th annual Bendigo Junior Basketball Classic beginning on Thursday, the region will continue to be a shining light for the growth of basketball participation in the country, Bendigo Basketball Association president Mark Lennox said. “The game has suffered nationally in the past, but it’s always been strong in Bendigo,” he said.

“This competition would have to be the biggest junior basketball event outside the metropolitan area.” The championships have long been a breeding ground for future stars of the court, with the likes of Kristi Harrower and Kevin Probert having played in the past. After fielding up to 220 teams at previous competitions, Lennox said this year’s number of 167 was the ideal amount, as

teams come from all over Victoria to compete in age groups from Under 12 to 18. Bendigo will be represented by 18 sides, with games to be played at the Bendigo Stadium, Flora Hill, Girton Grammar and Maiden Gully. Under 12 Boys A, Under 18 Boys A and Under 18 Girls A, will defend their titles. The event is expected to pump $2 million into the local economy.
