MORE major projects could be delayed this year because of Greater Bendigo’s superannuation debt. Council was forced to cut projects to find $10.3 million last year to fund the shortfall in one of its superannuation schemes, the Local Authorities Defined Benefits scheme. “The super issue will cast a shadow over everything we do this year,” mayor Lisa Ruffell said.

Super fund impacts on spending

“Super has to be our number one issue.” The scheme provides those who joined councils between 1947 and 1993 with a fixed return on retirement, no matter how bad the investments are. Any shortfall between what is owed and what the investments

return is paid by the council they were employed with. Council wanted help from the state and federal governments to change the laws so the fund didn’t have to be fully funded, to ease the financial pressure. Being fully funded means there must be enough money available in

by the super crisis. “We have had no response from the State Government, which I am not very happy with,” she said. “We wrote to them in early December, and they haven’t even acknowledged our letter. “The super issue is a big one for local government, but no one is doing anything about it.”

Clans have plans BENDIGO is bracing for a big Scottish invasion next month when clans and pipers descend on the city for the inaugural Scots Day Out. Hundreds of kilted Scots will parade through Bendigo’s historic View Street arts precinct to Rosalind Park to start the day of cultural celebrations and activities on Saturday, February 9. Pipe bands from across the state will put their skills to the test in competitions; dancers will contest the Central Victorian Highland Dancing Classic and tents will be abuzz with talk of clan history from the days of Scottish legends like Bruce and Wallace. Stalls will be selling Scottish crafts and there will even be the chance to sample the great Scottish fare of whisky and haggis, while local Scottish country dancers and musicians from the Emu Creek Bush Band recreate the Ceilidh atmosphere. Scots Day Out is regarded as the exciting new event on the Scottish calendar in Victoria with Bendigo quickly securing the date after an annual gathering in outer Melbourne ceased. Event director Chris Earl said Scots Day out was an all-inclusive local celebration. “We are bringing Scottishbased groups in Bendigo together for a day of celebration and fun

Health Minister says union to blame if hospital redevelopment delayed

Union acts to halt tender BY ANTHONY RADFORD HEALTH Minister David Davis said Australia’s largest construction union would be to blame if there were further delays in the $630 million Bendigo hospital redevelopment. The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union took the State Government to court on Friday to temporarily suspend the tender process. One of the two tenderers for the construction, Lend Lease, has an agreement with the CFMEU that could see its tender disqualified. Under new government guidelines, companies with such agreements cannot win government contracts.

The federal court rejected the injunction, saying the government could put any restrictions it wanted on the tender process. A State Government lawyer at the hearing said no decision would be made on excluding Lend Lease from the tender process before April. Before the court case, an announcement of the winning bid was expected in February. Mr Davis told the Bendigo Weekly the court action could cause a delay to the start of construction. “It is surprising a major union would seek to delay a government tender process and put in the way any step that could prevent the early construction of the biggest hospital in country Victoria,

History buff marks time

he said. “The government was surprised and disappointed a union would take this step that could delay a construction project with so many jobs. Mr Davis previously said he was disappointed at the union’s move, but did not link it to any delays. The CFMEU could not be contacted for comment. The court case, which is expected to be heard before a full bench of the federal court before April, came amid accusations the government was treating the two hospital tenderers unfairly. Mr Davis confirmed last week both tenderers would need to comply with the guidelines the CFMEU is trying to fight.

The code applies “to all public building and construction work that is the subject of an expression of interest or request for tender on or after July 1, 2012. The Bendigo hospital Expression of Interest documents were released in September, 2011, with the two preferred tenderers announced in March this year. Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said it was unfair to apply the new code to the Bendigo project retrospectively. They shouldn’t apply this to the Bendigo hospital project because it changes the rules half way through the game, she said. The original timeline for the project said construction would begin in December. Ms Allan said the entire proc-

ess had become a “dog’s breakfast. “As a result of the bungling by the Baillieu Liberal National Government, the tender process for Bendigo’s new hospital is a complete dog’s breakfast, she said. “The whole tender process is behind schedule. According to the government’s own timeline a successful tenderer was to have been chosen by late 2012. “To make matters worse, the tender process is in chaos due to the government changing the rules halfway through which may knock out one of the two bidders, Lend Lease. “This could blow the cost of the project to kingdom come with only one bidder left in the field.

By ROSEMARY SORENSEN A PHOTOGRAPH of Myers Flat in 1867 and the Hotel Shamrock as it looked in the 1860s are included in the historic Bendigo wall calendar created for the third year by history buff David Mulqueen. But for the cover of this year’s edition, he chose a much more recent photograph: Allan Doney’s 1950s image of Bennetts Arcade. “I’ve tried to get a good cross section, Mr Mulqueen said. “But I’ve liked that photo for so long, I wanted it for the front. “Norm Simpson, who is in his 80s, saw the cover and said he remembers going through the arcade in the 1940s. By the 1950s, when Mr Doney recorded so much of Bendigo’s past, a slogan that was originally above the fake clockface with a policeman’s smiling face drawn on it had disappeared. It had read: “Don’t let a coppa stopya – a reference to pub closing times. Mr Mulqueen is a fifth-generation Bendigonian – included in this year’s calendar is a photograph of a Fizelle and Mulqueen undertakers’ carriage, dating from the 1890s. A heritage adviser and member of the Bendigo Historical Society, he said the idea to start the calendar followed on from a chance meeting with Jim Hogan from the

Shamrock Hotel. “He was heading down the street to the library, because he said he was sick of looking at bare walls so wanted to get some historic photos to put up. “I told him I had just the thing. An avid collector, Mr Mulqueen

selects from his own collection and other records to create his calendar. “I know what’s important in the history of Bendigo, and I’m also interested in the vernacular, the use of box brownies, for instance, which made the job easier to find a record of the past.

“So many people stop me now and say, I remember that. The Bendigo Wall Calendar, produced in conjunction with the Bendigo Historical Society, is a limited edition, available for $20 from the Bendigo Information Centre and The Shamrock.

THE saga of Bendigo’s grandest historic house took another turn this week, with the announcement that no sale has yet been negotiated following the close of the tender process. None of the six tenders, two of which were local, were acceptable. The Department of Defence said no tenderers that submitted proposals will be excluded from any future sale process. “A new marketing process will be pursued in 2013 and all interested parties will have an opportunity to participate, a spokesperson said. The sale of the sprawling mansion on Chum Street, below Victoria Hill, was originally estimated at $3 million but is now likely to be less. The 7.57 hectare site, zoned “public use and “special use, has been costing the federal government almost $900,000 every year for security and upkeep, since it was closed as a Defence facility. The house was put on the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2004, and the sale of the 19th-century building will be subject to a Heritage Management Plan. The Fortuna Coalition, which has been campaigning for community involvement or ownership, is pushing for a whole-of-site development. “The Fortuna Coalition believes the integrity of the whole property is an issue of major importance, the group said. - Rosemary Sorensen

Women’s health group says lack of abortion clinic is ‘discrimination’

A lack of choices By ROSEMARY SORENSEN THE number of teenagers giving birth in Bendigo dropped dramatically in the year following the opening of the city’s Choices abortion clinic. State Government statistics show that from 2005 to 2008, an average of 73 women aged less than 20 gave birth in the Greater Bendigo region each year. In 2008, that figure dropped to 53. In the same five-year period, the total births in 2009 was above the average (1319, compared to the average of 1266). According to a local GP, the figures point to the importance of access to women’s health services for those most in need. “There are a whole lot of barriers put up to the most vulnerable,

the GP, who did not want to be named, said. “We know that young women find it most difficult to access the services, and right now, we have to send them to Echuca, Ballarat and Melbourne. It’s an equity issue. Last month, it was revealed that

go Health has tried “without success to recruit a consultant to run the clinic. The Australian Women’s Health Network, which published a paper on the rights-based approach to sexual and reproductive health in November last year, have

This is a publicly-funded hospital, they don’t provide the abortion clinic service and they should the Choices clinic, which opened in 2008, has been “suspended for a year. Bendigo Health said a replacement obstetrician could not be found to replace the doctor who left in January last year because local doctors are “all conscientious objectors. The spokesperson said Bendi-

called for a community discussion about the lack of support for the clinic. “The way in which women in the Loddon Mallee region are discriminated against is clear, convenor of the AWHN management committee Marilyn Beaumont said. “All properly funded health

services that provide surgical services should be required as part of their funding to provide the full range of services, the Kynetonbased consultant said. “It’s not about whether or not you can recruit a doctor, it’s about the philosophy and culture of the service. “This is a publicly-funded hospital, they don’t provide the abortion clinic service and they should. Ms Beaumont called on Bendigo Health senior management to address the situation. “It’s the leadership of the organisation that really needs to be engaged in this, she said. “It’s not around shaming women to be silent, it about finding the best combination of services to provide for the different needs of different women.

FOODfossickers Remove Xmas excess

EXCESS is synonymous with Christmas, whether with food, drink or socialising, and unfortunately all can lead to major regrets in January. If you gained a little weight or feel sluggish after the festivities, a post-holiday return to healthy eating habits will restore your energy. Severe dieting is not an appropriate response after festive bingeing, it will not yield long-term weight loss and may encourage your body to retain unwanted kilos. One of the biggest diet issues over Christmas is an increase in our daily intake of sugar via the consumption of sweets, cakes and drinks. Clear the pantry of all leftover party fare and remove excess sugar from your diet, it will significantly reduce

sweet cravings and restore normalised blood sugar levels. Few treats involve vegetables. If you substituted party food for multiple meals, you have reduced your daily intake of healthy fibre. Increase your raw vegetable intake to at least three cups per day. Eating smaller meals of 200 to 300 calories per meal about three hours apart, will help control cravings and stabilise blood sugar levels. Start and finish your day with 10-15g of protein. This should jump-start your metabolism in the morning and facilitate increased metabolism while you sleep. For breakfast, consider a whole-grain English muffin with an egg yielding around 200 calories and 10-13g of

protein. About 30 minutes before bed, try a serving of low-fat yoghurt, unsweetened almonds or flavoured tuna. Increase your daily water intake significantly after Christmas to flush out toxins and to help increase your regularity. After Christmas, increase your intake to eight to 10 glasses of water per day. Do not add cordial with artificial sweeteners, which can cause bloating and increase sweet cravings. Herbal teas with little or no sugar can improve your daily hydration, as well as add antioxidants to your beverage. These suggestions should have you feeling, and looking, your pre-Christmas best in no time. Source www.livestrong.com

Uncertainty will cost

By ROSEMARY SORENSEN A FORMER Greater Bendigo councillor has warned the rejection of heritage recommendations by the current council may cause planning uncertainty. “I am a bit disturbed by the heritage decisions and the way it’s been going,” Bruce Phillips said. “It’s based on what people think (rather than the recommendations). “They are entitled to have opinions, obviously, but the recommendations are based on council policy, so (in the previous term) when council disagreed, we realised we should review the policy.” Mr Phillips, who was defeated at the November election, was

commenting on recent controversy over council rejection of heritage recommendations. In December, president of Bendigo’s National Trust Gary Hill said council needed to be “more

more information was unnecessary. “Sometimes they are more verbose than they need to be,” he said. “You are always able to get more clarification if needed.”

I am a bit disturbed by the heritage decisions and the way it’s been going alert” to the advice of the heritage advisory committee. Cr Elise Chapman hit back, saying the heritage reports lacked information. Mr Phillips said the call for

He said Cr Peter Cox, who has also called for more information in heritage and other reports, is a “contrarian”. “I could always just about pick when Peter wouldn’t go with a rec-

ommendation,” he said. “Trees, heritage, rubbish, he is maybe a little extreme in those areas.” Mr Phillips said that while it is “normal” for a new management group to go through a jockeying phase, it is important that the new council settles quickly. “It takes time and it costs money, both for the council and planning applicants, when decisions aren’t made, which is okay if it’s needed. “But it can take away confidence, I fear, and we don’t want to do that. “We are still trying to find the right way to accommodate more people in the next 30 years, and the planning is in place for that.”

Demand for Centre to pay its way THE Bendigo Regional Archive Centre will be under threat in the future, according to Greater Bendigo councillor Peter Cox, following the tabling of a report last month. “I am very disappointed there were no innovative ideas in the report,” Cr Cox said. “It didn’t develop a business case for the archive centre, and, like all the other entities of council, it does need to be sustainable and not only rely on ratepayers’ money. “If they only rely on what council comes up with, at some stage in the future that’s going to get a lot more.” The previous council voted in September for a report to be prepared on the financial sustainability of the BRAC, which moved to purpose-built premises at 84 Nolan Street in 2011. That report, prepared by council Information Management manager Michael Smyth, outlines the development of the facility following the allocation of $1.3 million by the state government . It identified possible sources of income, such as commercial rent of

BUSINESS PLAN: The Bendigo Regional Archive Centre is under scrutiny. shelving space, and record storage of “other government bodies in the local area” (such as Coliban Water). While that option is still being considered, the proposal to store Bendigo Bank’s historical collection has not been successful as the bank has indicated they are “not considering financially contributing to storage costs”. The report concludes BRAC was

not established “to conduct commercial activities”. “I believe it is a crucial service,” Cr Cox said. “I don’t mind that ratepayers support it, I don’t have a problem with that, but I’ve seen government sectors pull funding out of particular projects and they are left with nothing. “We don’t want to put these places – the Archive Centre, the art gallery,

The Capital, Sandhurst Trust – under stress, so we need to identify ways to support them.” Cr Cox said the report stated 1500 records were accessed, but without any detail about those records or who was accessing them. “They are the very things the report should have discussed and argued,” Cr Cox said. – Rosemary Sorensen

New year off to a hot start

BY ANTHONY RADFORD

DID it feel a little colder and a lot drier than normal this year? It should have. Bendigo averaged a minimum of 7.9 degrees this year, with an average maximum of 21.1. The averages were pretty much on par with records, if not a tad colder at night. This year’s hottest temperature was recorded on November 29, when the mercury tipped 40.1. That was close to the hottest November day on record in Bendigo, which was 40.3 on November 26, 1997. Not surprisingly, what followed was the highest minimum of the year – 22.4 on November 30. Bendigo shivered through its coldest night on July 7, with a temperature of -3 recorded. It’s coldest day was on June 21, when the mercury could only manage 8.8. June and July were Bendigo’s coldest months, with the average minimum temperature of 2.5 for the month of June the lowest June average in Bendigo’s history. The highest minimum temperature in June was only 7.3. However, it was this year’s lack of rainfall that will also be a talking point. Bendigo recorded only 460mm of

rain, well down in its recent average of 514mm. Bendigo’s wettest year was in 2010, when 1060.4mm fell. The wettest month for 2012 was March, when 81.6mm fell. Like last year, Bendigo will get off to a hot start to 2013. Today’s soaring temperatures will continue through to Tuesday. Tomorrow is expected to hit 39, with 35 on Sunday, 40 on Monday and 37 on Tuesday. With the fire risk expected to be severe over the coming days, Greater Bendigo council is urging residents to be prepared in advance. Acting council chief executive officer Marg Allan encouraged residents to keep up to date with weather and fire conditions. “Temperatures are forecast to be in the high 30s and early 40s for at least the next six days so it is vital for people to prepare in advance so they can keep themselves and their families safe, she said. “For those living in fire-prone areas, it is important to re-familiarise yourselves with your fire plans and be ready to enact them if asked to do so by the CFA. “Monitor your local media and be aware of your surroundings and listen to messages by the health services to care for yourselves, your family and neighbours.

Industry in the market for business By ROSEMARY SORENSEN A WEBSITE showcasing Bendigo’s industrial might will go live this month. “It will be up and running very soon, we’re just about ready, Herbert Hermens said this week. “It’s a network to highlight the incredible range of support industries there are in Bendigofor the manufacturing and mining industries“The public launch of the website will show Bendigo industry’s collective intent to attract new, lucrative business markets. The Bendigo Manufacturing and Mining Initiative was set up by 14 businesses based in the region. They have been working with the Economic Development Unit of the Greater Bendigo council to co-promote their services nationally and beyond. “As a group, we’re diverse, as individual companies we’re very focussed, Mr Hermens, CEO of

Keech steel casting company, said. He said one of the aims of the Initiative was to better inform the local community of the strength of the industrial sector.

The website will show ... industry’s collective intent “Most people don’t realise that we have companies here that export right around the world, products that come out of here in Central Victoria, he said. “I’ve been fortunate to work around the world, and I must admit that here in Bendigo we have

the makings of leading-edge cooperation between business, government and the broader community. Foundation members of the BMMI include Keech, Australian Turntable Company, B. Keogh and Hoffmann Engineering. The Initiative was endorsed by Greater Bendigo council, which praised it’s “can-do attitude. Mr Hermens said the group has also been pleased with the development in the past year of the Bendigo Business Council, which has now set up a retail chapter as well as a youth chapter. “The focus is improving all the time, Mr Hermens said. “There is a role for business to play in the social welfare of the community, he said. “I’m a great believer that any good, healthy business organisation must take care of it all, not just business but social, educational and community interests too.

BendigoWeekly FOOD TIME: The mobile kitchen is on its way.

Ingredients for health JAMIE’S Ministry of Food mobile kitchen is coming. It will be welcomed at a free community Day hosted by the Greater Bendigo council and Bendigo Community Health Services on Saturday, January 12 from 9am to 12pm in Bull Street, next to the Conservatory. Council Community Wellbeing director Pauline Gordon said that it is exciting to have the mobile kitchen in Bendigo. “To celebrate this great event, there will be plenty for everyone to see and do to start thinking healthier in the New Year at this Community Day,” Ms Gordon said. “People can take a tour of Jamie’s Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen then stay and learn some healthy cooking tips and tricks at the cooking demonstrations.

“There will also be fun physical activities such as Tai Chi and Zumba at the Conservatory gardens, kids can learn to plant their own veggie garden and interact with the animals in the petting zoo, face painting and much more.” The Bendigo Community Farmers’ Market will be held from 9am to 1pm, just across the laneway, providing the Bendigo community with fresh, regional and seasonal produce once a month. The first round of cooking classes begins on Monday, January 14 for five weeks and there is still room available. Go to www.jamiesministryoffood.com to book. Victory for anti-abortionist I rEAD Service in limbo (Bendigo Weekly, December 21) which relates to the Bendigo Health abortion clinic not being able to get staff for almost one year. The first thing that springs to my mind is hats off to all those in the medical profession who will not have anything to do with this dreadful place. Well done everyone. next, why is it that our taxpayer funded health services, such as Bendigo Health and the Women’s Health Loddon mallee, are so in support of abortion which is proven statistically to be a very unhealthy procedure for women, the unborn and society in general. There are very strong links between abortion and breast cancer, abortion and miscarriage, abortion and suicide, ectopic pregnancies, still births and life-long guilt and grief for many. How does Bendigo Health, Women’s Health Loddon mallee and local mP maree Edwards, justify the outrageous claim that abortion is a health service. I, as one taxpayer, object to one red cent of my tax money going into this ugly business. Wouldn’t our tax money be better spent on educating women on how to avoid getting pregnant in the first place? Ron McMillan, Castlemaine

Pools the answer to obesity PErHAPS our federal candidates can explain their stance in regard to the closure of the Golden Square and Long Gully Public Swimming Pools. Swimming pool closures are a national disgrace; year after year pools have been closed and not replaced in Bendigo. Some like Golden Square and Long Gully have been allowed to be run down, badly maintained and operated with Greater Bendigo council pleading poverty as an excuse.

Support for Cr Cox’s position on council review COnGrATuLATIOnS must go to Cr Peter Cox after his tireless effort to again place the independent review on the Greater Bendigo council agenda and have it succeed with the support of mayor Lisa ruffell and a number of new councillors. On reading the officer’s report, it is painfully obvious the chief executive did not want this review to get up, why if there are savings to be had is he so against the idea? Even if we only save $1m a year it will help, after all we have just had to fork out $10m on an unseen superannuation bill. As this original idea was put forward by two very astute business people, namely Ted Coleman and michael mcKenzie, at their own personal expense, time and effort, I therefore

DO the staff at Greater Bendigo council think they are working for a business, whereas committed local government employees recognise that they work for the community that pays their wages? It makes you wonder what is behind Cr rod Fyffe’s “transparent and efficient organisation” (Bendigo Weekly, December 21) when the chief executive of the council, Craig niemann, tries to provide every reason for not undertaking an independent review. Those staff who work efficiently, effectively and are able to demonstrate their worth and there are a number of them, have nothing to fear for their “morale, attitude and culture”. Bring it on. I Am a regular user of the Kangaroo Flat Swimming Pool, this season for the first time ever the council has changed the opening time of the pool to noon, it is normally 10am. So far this summer swimmers from the Bendig Bendi go F For or Kangaroo Flat area who wish to go for a 3KLO 3DOPD Ben morning swim have had to travel to either the Aquatic Centre or Bendigo East pool. Council still advertise on their web site the hours of 10am to 7pm from December. Also this season council has failed to CV AR RD A erect or maintain the existing shade sails at 3 YELIM KM ITE UN the pool, we are more than two months into WARRANTY the season, kids are on school holidays, and there is little or no shade there. In my view these things put people off from going to our local pool.

Bendig Bendi Ben go Ford d

3KLO 3DOPD

As pools close, schools and patrons have had to travel further and scramble for pool time. It may be unfair to place all the blame on local councils with the mixed messages coming out of state and federal Governments. Governments must make a political decision that swimming is important enough to be supported across departments and recognise that warm-fuzzy words do not keep public pools open. There are millions of dollars spent on producing endless documents and health or wellbeing strategies in the battle against obesity by governments, but little mention of sporting activities such as swimming, which is one of the best all-round sports for our health. All candidates should be asked this. Why doesn’t state and federal departments of health money be used to invest in preventative health schemes through local swimming and the maintenance of local pools? Those of us that ask questions on these closures are answered with doubtful statistics, delays and, to some degree, silence. We are aware that some pools have come to the end of their useful life, so we are told, and it makes sense to build modern facilities, but the council has not done that, they have not replaced the pools at Golden Square or Long Gully. Planning then, is no replacement, as years go by before the new proposed pool at Kangaroo Flat. Questions should be asked; is this discrimination against the elderly, the disabled and young families under the Disability Discrimination Act or Age discrimination act?

Change the rules FORMER Labor leaders Bob Hawke and Peter Beattie this week added to the age-old argument to abolish the states, and with them, the State Governments. The idea is they are superseded by the Federal Government and they should be replaced with larger regional councils. Such a concept will never fly in Australia, but some Greater Bendigo councillors are probably wishing it would. Councils across Victoria, including Bendigo, are fighting with both state and federal governments to help them out with their superannuation liability shortfall. While this is not a sexy issue, its ramifications are significant. At the start of each year, the Bendigo Weekly writes a story with council, looking at the year ahead and the projects councillors see as their priorities. This year, instead of waxing lyrical about the options available, mayor Lisa Ruffell was forced to almost hold her tongue. Sure, she said, council has a long list of projects it wants to do.

BendigoWeekly

Editorial Comment The city’s gardens have been promised funding for years, there is the airport which needs to be developed to grow the city’s economy, and there is also the new pool which is needed to deal with Bendigo’s population growth. On top of that, Cr Ruffell listed the urgent drainage works needed, as well as the ever-growing list of footpaths locals want fixed or built. However, Cr Ruffell couldn’t commit to any of them, because of one thing – the superannuation crisis. It is months since this issue first came to light, and there is no solution in sight. Both state and federal governments are telling councils to look to the other for a resolution, and,

for the second year in a row, it looks like Bendigo will have to limit its spending on major projects, find further savings, possibly halt recruitment and maybe put up rates. It is that last option that will no doubt raise the ire of most locals. Because of bad laws and regulation, Bendigo could be hit with a $10 million bill every year, and it doesn’t have to happen. State and federal governments can join together to change the rules, so the super fund does not have to be fully funded at all times. Fully funded means it has to have enough money in it just in case every employee in the fund retires at once, an impossibility. This problem is just another example of state regulations impacting financially on local governments. Whether it be the superannuation, or constant shifting of services onto councils without compensation, state governments need to focus more on the impact of their actions or inaction. Maybe Hawke and Beattie were onto something.

T W E E T S OF THE YEAR BENDIGO’S twitter community grew significantly in 2012, and thanks to Member for #Bendigo @SteveGibbonsMP regularly made national headlines. We have suspended the Tweets of the Week this week, to give you what we think were the Tweets of the Year, in an idea suggested by regular tweeter @MichaelGToman Not surprisingly, @SteveGibbonsMP features prominently. We will begin with the one that pretty much started it all, and end his contribution with the latest controversy. @SteveGibbonsMP Only a psychopath with a giant ego would line up again after being comprehensively rejected by the overwhelming majority of colleagues. @SteveGibbonsMP Boy am I getting sick & tired of hearing of every move the ‘happy little vegemite’ makes via Twitter #everyoneneedstogetoverit @SteveGibbonsMP I make my own decisions and not accountable to anyone - you moron! @SteveGibbonsMP Actually I’m retiring at the next election after 15 years and five election wins, and you’ll still and always will be, a moron. @SteveGibbonsMP If I had walked away occasionally I probably wouldn’t have gotten into the trouble I did. A SEXTET of horns, strings and drums, The Woohoo Revue has forged its reputation throughout Australia as a festival favourite. The band has a signature sound and an adrenalin-fuelled celebration fit for dancing, drinking, and ignoring tomorrow. Hopefully this fits in with your plans as the band is the lead act at Music in the Parks tonight. Rosalind Park is the venue for the “fiery compositions and virtuosic musicianship which invoke a sense of romance and bravado,” revue member Dannie McKenzie said “Every song expresses a sense of occasion, and transports the listener to a rampaging after-party at a circus sideshow in a palatial ballroom.” Dannie certainly has some enthusiasm for the band. “Picture yourself as the star of a technicolour movie surrounded

by Hellzapoppin’ dancers swinging a Charleston two step, a 1920s speakeasy in a fantasy setting where all your wildest dreams come true,” he said. “You find yourself dancing a loose waltz, being thrust into dangerous spins by laughing friends and as your troubles wash away, a tall dark stranger takes you in their embrace and moves you gracefully, elegantly through a passionate tango. “Without warning, a Dixieland street party erupts, you link arms for a circle dance, you clap, you shout, you feel alive. You are transported by The Woohoo Revue and you will love them for it.” Drummer Andrew Rousch was born and raised in Bendigo, so give him an extra warm welcome. The band has been around since 2008 and is no stranger to the town, so come prepared for an evening with a style all of its own.

LUKE LAUNER

FILM MAKER Luke Launer has returned from a trip to Las Vegas clutching an award for his first full length feature film The Count. The film was awarded the Silver Screen Award. “I spent most of the day watching short films as well as feature films,” Mr Launer said. The ceremony was held that evening and Mr Launer was able to thank his fellow cast and crew. “Without their support I could not have made this film a reality,” he said. “With all the success it has achieved so far I am truly blessed.” Luke met some producers who offered some important tips and resources into getting his film marketed and distributed.

Dear Dotty...

www.bendigoweekly.com.au

Heat on for twits

Dear Dotty, My husband gave me a new filleting knife for Christmas so I can lovingly prepare the fish he regularly brings home. I do not wish to discourage his fishing activities as his absences are always appreciated, but I mean, really, a filleting knife? Any suggestions? Desperate, Deidrie Dear Deidrie Embrace the hunter in him. There are so many soft-handed blokes out there that I think you should be pleased that you’ve got yourself a proper, macho one. In fact next time he goes away on a fishing trip with his mates offer to go with him and invite the filleting knife as well. Sit with them around the camp fire each night as you scale the fish and encourage them to join you in hearty rounds of Kumbaya.

Information overload as Steve seeks out the right source MY horse is famous. I sent a pic in of the Metcalfe fire from Sunday and up it went on the Bendigo Weekly’s twitter feed. There proudly to the right was Cilla’s bum. Tweeter Marika mentioned her red rear end, such is the power of the modern age. This technology can be a bit of a hindrance in life. The long-suffering Mrs Kendall was checking out the CFA website when she noted a fire in Metcalfe, about two kilometres from us in fact. A look in the right direction showed the telltale sign of smoke. A hefty wind from the south was blowing it towards the township of Metcalfe and the emergency services went into full swing. I felt reasonably safe until I turned on twitter.

STEVE KENDALL ON LIFE

I learned a big lesson. Too much information is as bad as too little. Add to that wrong information and the deal becomes a whole lot worse. The fire was named at Keiths Road, Sidonia Road before Keaths Lane was finally confirmed. Some twitters continued to call it Keiths Lane. I was receiving tweets from Incident Alert DO2, that’s our district, the CFA and ABC. They were all telling a slightly different story. One site was late with everything, one was accurate and the other a mix of the two. Add to this the various

postings of onlookers, myself included, and the overload started. The Royal Commission into the Black Saturday fires recommended a centralised communication system. This was not the case. Mrs K then received a text telling her to watch and act, and I received an automated phone call to my home phone alerting me to the emergency situation. By this time the fire had been controlled, so the evacuation seemed unnecessary. Then the fire was tweeted as out of control again. The head had been contained but the western flank had moved on. This was quite an overload, and when it came down to it, a look out of the window showed me the fire was heading away from me.

Please don’t consider this a whinge, but if this is a taste of what to expect in a major situation it may need a rethink. A responsible body, with the right information is far better than a mix of reports, however well intentioned they may be. Perhaps the crux of the problem is all media was pointing me to the CFA website, which because of that fact was slow and overloaded. Never was there a greater need for Telstra to ensure ADSL2+ at the least in country areas. As for Cilla the horse, she said we didn’t see her best side and would I make sure her white blaze was in the fire picture next time. Let’s hope I don’t need to take another one. Tweet: @stevekendall1

Dear Dotty, I was at the cinema trying to enjoy myself when I was continually interrupted by three young ladies in the row behind me who were making a point of slurping up litres of iced cola. I turned around and gave them a very hard glare but this only encouraged them to continue

their rude and distracting behaviour. Inevitably the film was ruined for me. What should I have done? Angry Anna My Dear, I know these girls. Besides slurping, they specialise in rustling their Maltesers. They also simper and giggle. Last time this happened to me I took matters in my own hands, jumped over the ailse, confiscated their Maltesers and emptied their drinks over their heads. The manager insisted I leave but by golly it was worth it. We invite our readers to send in their letters to: Dear Dotty, Bendigo Weekly, PO Box 324, Bendigo 3552 or email editor@bendigoweekly. com.au Twitter: @DearDotty

Creating a myth

DRAWING THE AIR: Windsails on the flank of Victoria Hill in 1857.

WITH

JAMES LERK SEVERAL readers have contacted me in relation to the article which appeared in the Bendigo Weekly, December 21. In this story I mentioned the activities up on Victoria Hill about funneling fresh air into the mine workings by diggers in the 1850s, using air socks or wind sails.

Richard and Thomas ... built a fishing boat to sail to the Australian colonies in the late 1840s Fresh air, as was pointed out, was essential for those miners working below ground, not only for the sake of their health and wellbeing but also as a means of eliminating bad air from the underground workings after the use of explosives. My attention was drawn to the fact that I showed a portion of a photograph depicting a section of Coath’s claim on the brow of Victoria Hill. The photograph

is known to have been taken in early 1857 by the then-Bendigo photographer Alexander Fox. Family members Richard and Thomas Coath were part of a group of miners including John Allen, Edward LeLever and Walter Scott who worked this confined but rich claim which they took out in 1854. Richard Coath built the cottage on Happy Valley Road, in about 1860, immediately opposite from where their claim was located. In 1857 the claim was combined with a number of other neighbouring ones to form the Victoria Reef Company. Nearby the cottage is Coath Street which

on the history of mining and mining machinery of the Bendigo

was named after Richard. Some of the Coaths were boat builders and stonemasons back in Guernsey, Channel Islands. It had been part of the Coath family folklore that Richard and Thomas, along with other family members built a fishing boat to sail to the Australian colonies in the late 1840s, their destination being South Australia. This story had been passed down to the descendents belonging to the Coath family. The same story about the Coaths was told to me by the late Albert Richardson who was quite an authority

mines. According to the myth, when gold was discovered at Bendigo, Richard and Thomas Coath, like many Celts or Cornish who were mining copper in South Australia, abandoned their employment and headed towards this new Eldorado. In the Coath’s case, they used a bullock wagon to bring themselves with their belongings to the goldfield. George Ellis senior, while walking with his son of the same name along Happy Valley Road and past Coath’s Cottage in the 1930s, told him the story about the male members of the Coath

family who had lived there, and had come to South Australia in a small boat built by them. George also told his son about the bullock wagon that family members had used to come to Bendigo. Associate professor Clare Wood has provided the following information: Thomas Isaac Coath arrived in Victoria in 1853, having left Guernsey in 1852 on the Wild Wade. Richard was a sailmaker’s apprentice but he left Guernsey before his indenture was completed. He later married Selina Whicker and they went on to have a very large family. William Coath had a daughter, Susan Steward Coath, born March 23, 1844, who came to Victoria on the Pestonjee Bomanjee sailing from Southampton. Susan married George Anderson at All Saints on June 10, 1862, they settled in Rushworth and 12 of their children survived well into their adulthood. Back to the challenge of ventilating mine workings, the accompanying reproduction of a lithograph is by AJ Stopps. It shows the method of catching the wind in the wind sails and so funnelling it down through the wind sock into the shallow shafts on the western flank of Victoria Hill. AJ Stopps, worked from a photograph by Alexander Fox, taken in 1857.

Spirit back for Boomers

Baseballers pitch in

By JOEL PETERSON

AFTER recharging their batteries over Christmas, the ladder-leading Bendigo Spirit return to the Bendigo Stadium tomorrow night to take on the Bulleen Boomers. After a 13-2 record saw them take top spot heading into their eight-day break, the Spirit came back to training last Saturday. Several players travelled interstate to be with family and friends, however none went as far as forward Kelsey Griffin, who travelled back to her native United States. “It was great to see my family again, I really enjoyed it,” she said. Aided by the performance of Griffin, Bendigo have rebounded strongly from a Round 10 loss to Townsville, winning their past two matches, with the 25-year old averaging 15 points and 11 rebounds in her past three games. Bulleen, on the other hand, have lost their last three contests and sit one spot outside the top-four with a 7-9 record. Spirit coach Bernie Harrower said it was good to have a break to refresh, however the team was fully aware of the job at hand. “It was good to recharge and refresh, and get away from basketball for a week after a tough first half of the season,” he said. “We’ve been back into training this week, all the girls are ready to go on Saturday night, and we’ll be looking to take some momentum offensively out of the Logan game a fortnight ago.” The Spirit scored 98 points last time out in a 30-point thrashing of the Thunder.

STATE GREATS: Lachlan Jack, Darcy Harrison, Billy Parsons and coach Nathan Healey. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN THREE of Bendigo’s best young baseballers have been selected to travel to the nation’s capital to represent Victoria at the upcoming under-14 national baseball championships next week. Running from January 11 to 20, the titles bring together the best under-14 baseballers from around the country, with Lachlan Jack, Darcy Harrison and Billy Parsons set to fly the Victorian flag. The boys will form part of a Victorian team that will play an

eight game round-robin tournament in a pool of 10 teams, with medal rounds held for qualifiers to round out the competition. The three are teammates playing for the Scots baseball club in the local competition and are members of the Bendigo Bank Academy of Sport’s baseball program. BBAS baseball coach Terry Smith said all three have worked extremely hard to be selected, which involved travelling to Melbourne numerous times in order

to impress selectors. “We are very pleased for the boys, they have all worked very hard,” Smith said. “Lachlan and Billy have begun to realise some of their prodigious talent, while Darcy has developed much quicker than we anticipated. “Their selection is very significant for our program, and gives us the confidence that we are moving in the right direction for our athletes.” Fittingly, the three will be

representing the Victorian side called the Aces, as will BBAS assistant coach Nathan Healey, who is filling the same role with the Victorian under-18 white side. Healey said he was excited for his opportunity, but also for the talented trio of 13-year olds he coaches. “It is exciting. To be heading to Geelong will be great, I think no matter who you asked they would love to represent their state,” Healey said.

WEEKLYSPORT IMAGES 2012 NOT only was it a big news year in Bendigo, 2012 was similarly significant on the sporting scene. Several Bendigo athletes and teams excelled, and the city

hosted multiple major events including the Australian Opals v Brazil Farewell Series game and the Central Victorian Festival of Netball. The Bendigo Fighting Miners

claimed their 12th premiership, and the currently ladderleading Bendigo Spirit could be on their way to doing the same in 2013 after missing the WNBL finals last February.

Stage of honour

By JOEL PETERSON

A STAR-STUDDED peloton of 108 will ride the streets of Bendigo today, as the city plays host to the finish of the 2013 Jayco Herald Sun Tour’s first stage. Among the field are previous winners of the race, twotime champion Simon Gerrans and defending winner Nathan Haas, recent Tour of Spain King of the Mountains Jersey winner Simon Clarke and former ParisRoubaix winner Stuart O’Grady. The finish to the stage in Bendigo will share a key hallmark with the Paris-Roubaix – the world-famous race O’Grady won in 2007 – as it finishes at the Tom Flood Sports Centre, having been modelled after the velodrome finish of cycling’s most prestigious one-day classic. There is a strong local contingent in the race with Barkers Creek’s Lachlan Norris and Bendigo boys Darren Lapthorne, Robbie Hucker and Shaun McCarthy all competing in the field. Another local involved in the race is Jayco VIS Apollo team manager Scott McGrory, the Bendigo resident and Olympic gold medallist swapping the commentator’s headset for one with which he will feed his team instructions over the four-day race. One of the main men to beat in the race is defending national road champion Ger-

rans who, with an overall win, would become only the fourth rider in history to win three “Sun Tour titles. “I won the last two Sun Tours I rode, so I am obviously very motivated to continue that record, Gerrans said. Following a banner 2012 in which he took out the Tour Down Under and Milan-San Remo to add to his national

[I] hope to continue building on my successes road race championship, Gerrans said he is looking forward to attempting to add to his 2005 and 2006 tour wins. “Starting so strong in 2012 and winning races in Australia set me up for my best season to date, he said. “I will be using the same theory and hope to start 2013 in the same way and continue building on my successes. The race starts with a prologue in Williamstown following the conclusion of the Michelton Bay Cycling Classic, with today’s first stage taking in some of Central Victoria’s icon-

ic landmarks. Beginning at the historic Rupertswood Mansion in Sunbury, the peloton will ascend Mount Macedon, pass Hanging Rock and travel through Redesdale before a second climb – over One Tree Hill – leads them to the finish on the Tom Flood track. One of the leading contenders for the stage win in Bendigo will be Matthew Goss. The GreenEDGE sprinter and teammate of Gerrans believes the stage into Bendigo may be his best chance of recording a stage win. “If there is a big group still together over Mount Macedon and coming into Bendigo, it is one to keep your eye on and will make for a pretty entertaining finish as a bunch sprint on the velodrome, Goss said. Stage two of the race is held from Michelton Winery, near Nagambie, through Seymour and Yea before descending into the Yarra Valley and finishing in Healesville. The final stage on Sunday, January 7 sees the peloton climb the picturesque Arthur’s Seat twice to decide who will claim the final yellow jersey as winner of the 2013 Jayco Herald Sun Tour. To wrap up a big day in cycling action after the stage finish, the Bendigo and District Cycling Club will hold track racing at the Tom Flood Sports Centre starting at 6pm.
