A couple of this years' new releases are the Gallipoli Centenary Rose, a beautiful deep red rose and Wedding Bells, a lovely soft pink hybrid tea rose along with old favourites like Blue Moon, Double Delight with its absolutely delicious perfume and Just Joey. You can start pruning roses and fruit trees this month, and tidy up your perennials, don’t completely cut back your perennials as we can still have frosts and leaving some growth will protect any new growth. Perennials can be dug up and split, and

Make sure your cutting implements are sharp and wipe the blades regularly with methylated spirits or antiseptic between plants so you don't spread any disease. Spray roses with a lime sulphur after pruning. Preparation for planting trees and roses is the same. Dig a hole that will easily fit the root system of the plant, making sure the sides and base of the hole are broken up, a clean smooth hole will form a well and hold water which in turn will rot the roots of a plant, dig it deeper than you will need. Mix compost with the soil you have dug out, put some soil mix back into the hole then place your plant into the hole and bury the root system with the rest of the soil, being careful not to bury the graft, where the rootstock meets the plant. Water your plant in with a seaweed base solution, this promotes root growth and helps to prevent transplant shock. Your winter vegies should be really pumping, and there's still plenty of time to put in a follow-up crop of winter vegetables along with pansies, violas, primula and all the winter flowering plants as well. Watch for powdery mildew on leaves of annual flowers and some vegetables, it looks like a fine white powder on the leaves, you can use a rose spray on this or pull off the effected foliage if there is not too much damage and bin it.
