TIME OUT All Seasons’ bid rejected
By SHARON KEMP
GAMBLING opportunities in Bendigo are set to shrink and attention is being focused on the long hours of access gamblers already have to poker machines in the city. Asked to extend liquor licence trading hours at the All Seasons Hotel, the City of Greater Bendigo this week said no because it did not want gamblers to have more time at machines, or more access to drinking. Councillors were also concerned that the All Seasons, Bendigo’s largest pokies venue with more than $5.5 million going into machines in the six months to December 31, operates outside the city’s entertainment area and adjacent to housing. But drawing attention to the generosity shown to operators in the past, councillor Andrea Metcalf said her research showed the Bendigo District RSL Club was effectively able to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “The liquor licence for the RSL was granted by the Victorian Commision of Gaming and Liquor Regulation in 1987 (and) this licence essentially gave the business 24 hour service rights except for a period between 1am and 10am on Sunday mornings,” Cr Metcalf said. “The city agreed to a variation in 2014 to allow the serving of alcohol on Sundays.” The RSL is located in North Bendigo, also outside the entertainment district, and it closes at 4am Thurs-

Footy first backs a worthy cause FEMALE football will be celebrated on Saturday night as Strathfieldsaye and Kangaroo Flat’s women’s teams combine for a good cause. The two clubs are fielding their first senior women’s sides this year, providing the inspiration for a Pink Sports Gala Night featuring three junior games and a

senior match under lights. Along with the footy there will be collection tins, a bake sale, raffle tickets and barbecue, raising funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia. The junior matches start at 5.30pm, with the senior women and under-18s taking to the field at 7pm.

day to Saturday and at 2am Sunday to Wednesday, an hour later each day than the All Seasons. The owners of the All Seasons want to extend its hours to 4am Thursday to Saturday and 3am on other days. “I was interested to read in the documentation submitted by the applicant that the reason behind the increased hours was to remain competitive as a business as the RSL already had approval for similar hours,” Cr Metcalf said. She voted to refuse the All Seasons’ application, arguing that the RSL licence predates the current policy of the council that sought to discourage convenience to gambling.
The city agreed to... allow the serving of alcohol (in 2014) Councillors elected in this term have taken a vocal stance against gambling, throwing their weight against a bid by Bendigo Stadium Limited to put 44 pokies into the Wellington at Botanic Gardens Hotel and by the Bendigo Club to add 16 machines.

The Weekly look at the local real estate market
Gold Mines Hotel sold ONE of Bendigo’s most popular and historic watering holes has been sold. The National Trust-listed Gold Mines Hotel, located on Marong Road, was offered for sale through agents McKean McGregor. Real estate agent Jayden Donaldson yesterday confirmed the sale of the property, which had been due to go to auction today. Mr Donaldson said the property had been purchased for an undisclosed price by a Melbourne-based investor who was looking to continue the historic pub’s long and proud tradition as a key player in Bendigo’s hospitality industry. He said there had been strong interest in the property from both local and Melbourne-based interests. The Gold Mines Hotel was built in 1872, and is located on a prized about 0.5 hectare allotment that includes stunning heritage gardens that have helped the pub regularly earn a spot in the Top 100 beer gardens of Australia. Two other significant local hotels are also on the market, with the British and American
Hotel on Eaglehawk Road being offered for sale as a freehold going concern business with hotel licence or as a passive investment. The Newmarket Hotel, located on the corner of Charleston Road and Nolan Street is also for sale. THE rental market in regional Victoria offers opportunities for investors and some good value for tenants, if indeed they can find a place to rent. That might not be as easy as it sounds, with REIV data revealing that rental vacancy rates in regional Victoria fell again in April to 1.7 per cent. That’s even tighter than Melbourne, where the ever-increasing supply of new apartments has kept the rate to two per cent. Availability outside the capital is about half that of five years ago, and it is no surprise that median weekly rent has ticked up slightly to $315 per week. While over the last year median rents across regional Victoria for four-bedroom and two-bedroom houses have risen (by 4.2 per cent and two per cent respectively), there have been no increases in other

Landlords are receiving gross rental yields of between 4.1 and 4.8 per cent on regional dwellings, which compares favourably with metropolitan yields, where only one-bedroom units in inner Melbourne (five per cent) are returning slightly higher. Weekly median rentals on two-bedroom units are still below $200 in Moe, Kyabram and Benalla, while the median on same sized units are nearly double that in Geelong ($393) and Torquay ($360). Three-bedroom houses in Morwell, Kyabram, Stawell, Merbein and Churchill have rental
medians of under $250, but for tenants in Jan Juc ($480), Torquay ($450) Barwon Heads ($420), renting a three-bedroom house is a more expensive proposition. Gisborne ($400), in the Macedon Ranges, is the only location outside the Surf Coast and Greater Geelong in the top 16 median weekly rentals for this sized dwelling, indicative of the increasing popularity of Victoria’s second biggest city and its environs as desirable places to live. A matter of principal
EDUCATION minister James Merlino has refused to meet two former Bendigo South East parents who are calling for an end to an investigation of principal Ernie Fleming, ahead of a decision. Ken McCulloch and Laurie Whelan asked for the meeting after writing to Mr Merlino describing the effects the Department of Education and Training investigation was having on Mr Fleming and his family. Mr Fleming has not worked at the school since the start of the 2017 school year but the department has cited privacy issues for remaining silent on what was behind his withdrawal from work. The Bendigo Weekly published in March 2017 a segment of a DET letter that said the school was the subject of a financial audit.
But it has only been in recent months, thanks to lobbying by Mr McCulloch and Mr Whelan, that the department has been open about investigating Mr Fleming. A spokesperson said the department had completed its investigation and was finalising a decision. “There are a number of steps to be taken but we still expect to have the matter resolved by the end of May,” the spokesperson said. Mr McCulloch and Mr Whelan said the length of time the investigation had taken had exacted the biggest toll on Mr Fleming. An investigation that would normally have taken three months had extended out to 18 months, they had been told by senior department officials. But Mr McCulloch said the officials would not talk specifically about Mr Fleming’s case.
He had written to Mr Merlino through Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allan requesting a meeting with the education minister but this week learnt a meeting would not take place before a decision was made about Mr Fleming’s future. He said the lack of any infor-

mation from the department had allowed rumour and innuendo to flourish. “Ernie has been shamefully treated. Shame on them,” Mr McCulloch said. Mr Whelan said he was conscious that talking publicly drew more attention to Mr Fleming’s situation and potentially created more anxiety for

who attended Bendigo South East College and they were both supporters of Mr Fleming’s work that had created the school most sought after by parents of the four schools in the Bendigo Education Plan. “He has been hung because of the success of the school,” Mr Whelan said. BSE boasts an enrolment of more
than 1500 students compared with Weeroona College, Eaglehawk Secondary College and Crusoe College which have enrolments of between 400 and 600 students each. “There is an element of the success of the school and the demand on it and the programs that have been built over the years that Ernie has been a key driver of,” Mr Whelan said. “I guess our concerns are this investigation has taken so long, it is having a huge personal impact on the families involved and the direction of the school is in abeyance until it is resolved.” Mr McCulloch said Victorian principals would be watching for an outcome. “Because if it ends with Ernie being cut down, it will stifle any innovation in public education for the next 10 years,” he said.

Hospital helipad nears completion VICTORIA’s air ambulances will be able to transport critically ill patients to Bendigo hospital from June 27 when the newly-built helipad at the facility becomes fully operational. Before then, Bendigo Health and construction consortium Exemplar will brief neighbours about how the helipad will operate, including laws that prohibit certain behaviour in the vicinity.
Once the helipad becomes certified by the Civil Aviation and Safety Authority, no drones will be able to be fly within five kilometres of the hospital. Exemplar chief executive Michelle Morrison said the legal controls over helipads mean trees under the flight path will have to be kept trimmed. A community information day is set down for May 30.
Ms Morrison said the helipad and carpark, which formed stage two of the new Bendigo hospital project, were Exemplar’s gift to Bendigo, and were included to make the consortium’s bid more competitive. The design of the hospital means critically ill patients arriving by helicopter can be transported from the helipad, across the airbridge to a hot lift and be in the resuscitation unit within minutes.
Air ambulance officers will be able to train on the helipad from June 4 and from June 27, the landing space will be open to emergency helicopters. “It is amazing to think the entire project is almost complete,” said Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allan, who with Ms Morrison and Bendigo Health chairman Bob Cameron put the final paint touches on the red cross that marks the exact landing position.
THE political party that last month urged foreign minister Julie Bishop to give settlement priority to South Africa’s white farmers has organised a petition with 10,000 signatures in favour of the Carter family whose land in Marong is the subject of a compulsory acquisition bid. The far-right group Australian Liberty Alliance has addressed the petition to Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards and planning minister Richard Wynne, asking him not to approve the City of Greater Bendigo’s request to forcibly acquire the land. The primary petitioner, ALA secretary Ralf Schumann, addressed Mr Wynne: “Your decision today can play a significant role on 24 November 2018”. Mr Schumann was referring to this year’s state election. But he declined to say when or how the party would pass on the petition. In Perth, Avi Yemini
submitted a petition in April to Ms Bishop urging her to support calls for persecuted South African farmers to be allowed to settle in Australia. Mr Yemini is the activist who organised a rally for the Carters on the steps of the Victorian parliament house last week. Mr Schumann told the Bendigo Weekly there was no comparison between the events unfolding around the Carters and the forcible removal of South African farmers from their land. But he said: “What is being done to the Carter family is outrageous and unjustifiable”. “We hope public sentiment will convince the minister to reject the forced acquisition pursued by certain councillors in Bendigo,” he said. “After all, it is an election year. “The campaign also builds momentum for the Carters, in case this expropriation has to be defended in court.”

Repairs stalled
REGIONAL car owners are disproportionately disadvantaged on technical support, according to Gejay Automotive Bendigo director Gary Pinner. Car manufacturers or dealerships make it difficult for independent mechanics to get access to a vehicle’s technical information including codes and pin numbers, to service or carry out repairs, he said. Not having access to the data could mean transporting the vehicle to a dealership in another regional city or Melbourne. Labor wants to impose a mandatory code on manufacturers and dealers that requires them to share technical information with independent mechanics “on commercially fair and reasonable terms”. Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters said the move would enhance competition in the vehicle repair and service sector, and level the playing field for independent firms, such as Gejay Automotive. “If you choose your local independent repairer, because you have a relationship, then they should have access to the data,” she said. “The big manufacturers, the car dealerships, I acknowledge that they will hate this because we are breaking up their monopoly, but it should be about your choice.” Labor wants the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to have oversight of the mandatory code. “At this stage, the ACCC has recommended that it be done so it is a ministerial decision,” Ms Chesters said.
hands on: Gary Pinner and Lisa Chesters. Earlier this year Mr Pinner lobbied in Canberra for changes that would help independent repairers. He said the limited amount of data that was available to the aftermarket was a concern. “We find that in a lot of cases our customers are happy to come to us, not necessarily go to the dealer, but when we are unable to access certain information, we have to refer the vehicle to the dealer and that can mean taking the car hundreds of kilometres,” Mr Pinner said. “In the regional areas, that can make it very difficult and if I have to refer our work to a dealer in other regional ar-
eas or in Melbourne, it takes work out of our workshop and makes it difficult to survive in the long term.” He said there was no reason why car owners had to take their car to dealerships or manufacturers for aftermarket care even if it was under warranty. “Independent dealers are skilled and can do the work but the infornation denied to us are the service codes and codes in relation to repairing certain parts of the car,” he said. “That is why we are very vocal, it will benefit all the aftermarket repairers in our area.”

La Trobe land up for sale
TWO parcels of land owned by La Trobe University have been placed on the market Head of campus Rob Stephenson this week confirmed two of La Trobe’s property holdings had been deemed surplus to the organisation’s requirements during the process of developing the Bendigo Campus Master Plan and subsequent commitment to the capital investment in the campus transformation program. The high-profile site on Edwards Road has been described as a sensational investment or de-
velopment opportunity, and offers Commercial 1 zoning across three titles of land covering more than 21,400 square metres. The land has been deemed surplus to the university’s needs, and includes long standing blue chip tenant Bendigo Telco in a 918-square-metre modern office complex, leased through until September 2023. Lot one comprises 6300sq.m of vacant land, while lot three provides 10,860sq.m of vacant land. The property is wedged be-
tween Strath Village and Kennington shopping centres and the university campus. Tweed Sutherland First National have been appointed selling agents, with the land being offered for sale by Expression of Interest over a four-week marketing program. Now owned by La Trobe University, the general residentialzoned property at 5 Friswell Avenue is being offered for outright sale by agents Dungey Carter Ketterer or as a potential joint venture opportunity with the vendor.
The prime 3.343-hectare site with approved 48-lot subdivision was bought by brothers Ken and Herb Hesse about 50 years ago. The brothers operated the well-known Hesse Brothers Electrical on Lyttleton Terrace from the 1930s, and saw the Flora Hill land as a shrewd investment opportunity, a decision ratified by the education department when they purchased the site years later. Situated in an area of Bendigo where new residential lots are
now rare, selling agent Dungey Carter Ketterer anticipates demand for any new residential lots to be strong. Director Matt Bowles said the site had been vacant for some time, and described the property as “one of the better residential developments of its type to come onto the market for some time”. Sale of both properties will require approval of the Victorian government land monitor, and cannot be sold below the Victorian Valuer-General valuation.

Students step out for Red Shield Appeal The Salvation Army launched the Red Shield Appeal in Bendigo on Wednesday. Major Andrew Walker of the Salvation Army Bendigo said the Salvos are aiming to raise $50,000 in the Bendigo region this year to help meet the growing demand on local services. Girton Grammar School, long-time supporters of the Red Shield Appeal in Bendigo,
will once again get behind the campaign. This year about 300 students will knock on doors in Bendigo and Castlemaine, adopting an innovative high-tech approach. The school has developed an online tool that enables students to map out the geographic area where they plan to collect. It allows students to sign up for a specific targeted area so

there is no overlap in their fundraising efforts. About 300 students will knock on doors in Bendigo and Castlemaine. Headmaster Matthew Maruff said the school was pleased to support a charity that provides services in the Bendigo region. “Work includes the provision of drug and alcohol abuse programs, support for domestic
violence and family breakdown assistance,” Mr Maruff said. In Bendigo, the Salvation Army has worked with more than 2000 families and individuals in need of support over the past 12 months. Assistance has included financial and material support, counselling, financial counselling, and drug and alcohol addiction support.

FOOD will form part of Bendigo’s next economic development strategy as the city seeks to capitalise on its growing reputation for food tourism. But City of Greater Bendigo deputy mayor Jennifer Alden is also keen to include agribusiness in the strategy to protect local agricultural land. The notice of motion Cr Alden submitted to council on Wednesday night said sustainable water management system mapping and modelling for climate change should form part of the strategy. “The purpose of doing so is to further support our local food economy via the identification of premium quality agricultural land for a range of productive uses and investments in order to safeguard it from competing, non-complimentary land uses,” Cr Alden said. “My desire is to see council build its capacity to implement new approaches to supporting, diversifying and growing the local food economy. “In particular by recognising that a strong local food system not only has health and environmental benefits, but also benefits local economies through job creation, greater investment in local businesses and increased farm viability. “It is about diversifying our farm base and building resilience in our food system. “This work can support many smallscale farmers in our rural communities and townships wanting to implement production practices that regenerate their farms.” Mayor Margaret O’Rourke told ABC Central Victoria yesterday food was a strong part of Bendigo’s ethos now, “in terms of the activities that happen around our farmer’s markets and Food Fossickers and so on”. “Jen’s motion was to think more strategically about that, looking at particular clusters within greater Bendigo, at soil types which are really good for particular types of produce,” Cr O’Rourke said.

V/Line three years late
By joel peterson
V/LINE has marked an unwanted milestone this month, notching up three straight years of Bendigo line trains running late. According to the operator’s performance monitoring data, V/Line has recorded as on time less than 92 per cent of its Bendigo trains for 36 consecutive months. Figures released last week show that 85.4 per cent of trains for April were on time, an increase of 2.5 per cent on the previous month but still nearly seven per cent behind the operator’s target figure. “This is the highest punctuality result on the Bendigo line in the past six months and we will be working hard to ensure this
trend continues,” V/Line CEO James Pinder said. Across the network, one in every seven trains did not run within V/Line’s on-time target of five minutes and 59 seconds for short-distance journeys (Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Seymour, Traralgon) and nine minutes and 59 seconds for long journeys (Swan Hill, Warrnambool, Bairnsdale, Shepparton). V/Line did meet its target 96 per cent for reliability, with 97.4 per cent of trains delivered across the network. Bendigo services saw their third straight month of meeting reliability targets, at 97.5 per cent for April. The performance figures came as the Victorian Auditor General released a report into
the effectiveness of the $3.65 billion Regional Rail Link project. The report found that it is difficult to determine whether value for money on the project has been delivered, given the former Department of Transport’s “poor benefit management practices”. ”It is very challenging, and perhaps impossible, to measure the expected benefits of the project. It is therefore unclear what level of value for money has been achieved,” the report stated. The Auditor General found that since the link’s opening the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Rescources and Depertment of Treasury and Finance have not attempted to assess the value or
achievement of any realised or potential benefits delivered by the project. What was clear in the report is that Bendigo has not benefitted as greatly as other regional areas, with no increase in twohour peak services to Bendigo since 2012. In the same time, at least one such service has been added on each other regional line, including the Gippsland corridor, and only five of the projected 11 peak services delivered on Metro lines. It found that the expected capacity generated by the project had not been reached, and that any Airport Rail Link using Sunshine as an interchange could add further strain on that increasignly congested part of the network.

Gold mine hits a milestone IT took Fosterville Gold Mine 11 years to pour one million ounces of gold from its open pit and underground operations near Bendigo, but only two years to pour the next 500,000 ounces. The operation, owned by Canadian gold miner Kirkland Lake Gold, reached its 1.5 million ounce milestone this week after 13 years of mining. Kirkland Lake, which is listed on the Toronto and Australian stock exchange, claims to have access to another 1.7 million ounces of gold underground at the operation, and continues to spend millions of dollars exploring for more reserves. The mine employs about 450 people. The geographical nature of the orebody requires a specialised process to free the gold from the host rock. Fosterville is one of only about a handful of operations around the world that uses bacteria in processing, called Biox technology. The mine has been owned by a number of companies since 2005 when it first started operation in its current form.
MORE than 1300 people flocked to Strathdale’s Beischer Park for last weekend’s annual Mother’s Day Classic fun run. Participants in the popular event helped raise almost $40,000 for research into breast cancer. This year’s Classic was the tenth for Bendigo, and the 21st in the national event’s proud history. Talented teenager Yazmin Hayes was the first participant home in the four kilometre run, while Luke Brophy was first in the eight km event. Results, more pics - Pages 16-17

There is concern Bendigo Stadium could pull out of operating the Wellington in White Hills, as the organisation has stated its plans to refurbish the pub were not sustainable without income from the pokies it proposed. This week, councillors reiterated their disapproval of pokies.
Deputy mayor Jennifer Alden, who has led the charge in the past, said All Seasons’ proposal may have adverse social impacts on the community because of the increased hours available to gaming facilities. “On my calculation, (approval of the All Seasons’ application for extended hours) means it is closed for the whole week for only 32 hours,” she said. The All Seasons Hotel and the Bendigo Stadium were contacted for comment.

IT’S a good thing lawn bowler Aaron Wilson has become known for his celebrations, because the 26-year-old has yet another honour to add to his ever-growing sporting CV. After claiming Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s singles on the Gold Coast, Wilson has been named the Cloud Copy Click Sports Star of the Year winner for April. Wilson became just the third Australian to win Commonwealth gold in the men’s singles and the first Bendigonian to win a lawn bowls gold at the games since Don Sherman. Wilson’s 21-14 victory
over Canada’s Ryan Bester on the competition’s penultimate night was a masterclass, punctuated with an unconventional but memorable celebration. In the fashion of former singles gold medallist Kelvin Kerkow, Wilson ripped his shirt off following the victory, enhancing his reputation as one of the characters of the sport. “It was going to be a tight game but it’s very exciting to get a gold medal for Australia, it’s absolutely awesome,” he said. “I got behind really early, again just needed to get myself in the game, played a
couple of good shots to get myself back into it and one thing led to another and got the final few shots.” Wilson is a former winner of the Sports Star of the Year, taking out award two years ago for his exploits in winning a world title alongside Brett Wilkie and several national championships. He joins cyclist Sam Crome and junior ice hockey star Emily Davis-Tope as monthly winners ahead of the 2018 awards. ONE of Bendigo’s most active RSL sub-branches will construct a new memorial wall, in the process creating space for the names of 65 of its service personnel from World War I, and more standing room for people attending Anzac and Remembrance Day services. The Kangaroo Flat RSL sub-branch has received a $80,000 grant to build the wall at its memorial on High Street. Work with spirit
If you enjoy studying faces, the latest exhibition in the Bendigo Bank Centre, Exhibit B, will provide you with great interest. As a student of life, local artist Jane Ineson looks for the inner strength and spiritual qualities of her subjects. “Working from life allows me
to respond with greater depth and sincerity,” she said. “I am interested in spiritual likeness, and intrigued by the surprise truths that are discovered from drawing honestly in the moment.” One of her particular portraits, of Ron Connely (pictured
centre) was painted near Omeo in remote high country. The painting was short-listed for the 2017 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. Communing through Portraiture, Paintings and Drawing by Jane Ineson will be on display until June 4.
Cat Canteri’s is showcasing her newly-released album in Bendigo on Saturday. Inner North has its roots firmly planted in the neighbourhood that Canteri calls home – the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne. Famed for its immigrant culture, cafés and thriving music scene, her family ties to this area go back to before 1900. Canteri feels a deep sense of connection to the people, places, spaces she grew up in, and the songs on Inner North play out as if the listener is riding a tram down High Street, contemplating stories untold within each building. Backed by long time musical collaborators Justin Bernasconi (guitar), Ben Franz (bass) and Justin Olsson (drums), Canteri and producer Jeff Lang turn her songs into miniature but epic soundscapes supporting her smoky alto voice and vivid storytelling. The show includes guests Sherri Parry and Well Into Winter. Cat Canteri plays the Old Church on The Hill, 36 Russell St, Quarry Hill on Saturday May 19 at 7pm.

Working with gas
Bendigo residents are invited to have their say on a redevelopment option for the historic Bendigo Gas Works site in Weeroona Avenue. A community drop in session will take place from 3.30pm to 6pm on Wednesday at the Bendigo Tennis Centre pavilion on Nolan Street. The redevelopment option, endorsed by the Greater Bendigo City Council, includes new pedestrian/cycle path links across the creek to Lake Weeroona, an interpretive trail, a new plaza for events and markets. It would also include

an event space in the heart of the site, new lighting and other services, conservation of heritage buildings, new vehicle access and parking and landscaping. City of Greater Bendigo mayor Margaret O’Rourke said in addition to endorsing the redevelopment option, the council has supported a decontamination project at the site and agreed to provide $45,000 to develop schematic designs and cost estimates for the future of the site in consultation with the community. “Late last year we said we would hold a community drop in session to al-
low residents to have their say on the project and councillors and staff from the Heritage and Property areas will be available to chat to residents at the session,” Cr O’Rourke said. “I encourage all interested residents and those who live nearby to drop into the session and have their say.” The Bendigo Gasworks site is an important heritage asset that operated from 1860 to 1973. All of the gasworks buildings and equipment are largely intact but in very poor condition as the site is frequently subjected to illegal entry and attacks by vandals.
Although closed for many years the site is heavily contaminated from its previous use as a gas works and the Department of Treasury and Finance is planning and funding the decontamination of the site. “Cleaning up the site and developing a plan for its future use will help protect this important heritage asset and provide opportunities for the broader community,” Cr O’Rourke said. An estimate of costs for the redevelopment option cannot be determined until the schematic design work is undertaken by the council.

Why not walk to school today? children and parents are being urged to support this year’s Walk Safely to School Day today. Now in its 19th year, the annual national event is to encourage children to walk and commute safely to school. The day aims to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment. City of Greater Bendigo council’s Caroline Grylls said the day encourages parents or carers to walk to school with primary
school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour. “The day also promotes the health benefits of walking and helps to create regular walking habits at an early age. Walking is by far the best exercise because it can be built into your daily routine,” Ms Grylls said. “Encouraging people to walk their children to school, even if it means parking a few blocks away and walking that distance is good for families and helps the council manage the traffic congestion

Support local artists
Underpass redraws the map
I recently read Whispers from the Gallery by Dianne Dempsey, Bendigo Weekly, April 6. It was, in short, a fairly scathing review of the current exhibition policies of the Bendigo Art Gallery under the direction of Karen Quinlan. On one hand Ms Quinlan was praised for attracting thousands of tourists to Bendigo, and on the other condemned for turning the art gallery into a “frock shop”. It is as Bendigo arts patron, Anne Power, has commented, “a dilemma”. The problem is that little or no support is being given to the local Bendigo arts community, or seemingly for Australian art. Instead we currently see the fabrics of Marimekko from Finland and recently: Contemporary Art from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; Grace Kelly’s dresses; American Dreams; Hollywood Costumes by Edith Head; Marilyn Monroe memorabilia and that eight-metre high, wind-up-herskirt statue, Forever Marilyn, that almost made the nearby bronze of Queen Victoria blush. The sad thing is that the Bendigo region has some great artists who rarely, if ever, get their work seen. Certainly some of the local artists of the recent past, such as Leonard French, Bill Delica and Roger Kemp have one or two works in the permanent collection. But as local artist Stanley Farley pointed out in Ms Dempsey’s article, “The gallery could visit artists working in the region. Commission exhibitions that talk about a sense of place and have a broad emphasis on where we are.” The Ballarat Art Gallery, on the other hand, has a strong policy of supporting Australian artists with recent surveys of Pam Hallandal, Kevin Lincoln, Chris Canning (from Ascot) Yvonne Audette, Michael Shannon (from Heathcote) and of course their Lindsay Gallery, permanently celebrating the Lindsay family (Norman, Daryl, Percy, Lionel, Ruby et al) from nearby Creswick. What we are witnessing is a cultural dumbing down, a turnstile exhibition policy determined by box office rather than any higher or local cultural values. It is definitely an unAustralian policy that by ignoring the local art scene, condemns it. Its not just the local artists who are angry, its also local ratepayers who see their rates and taxes being used to support overseas art. Meanwhile, the cultural cringe lavishly wines and dines at their expense in the Bendigo Art Gallery. Jeff Makin, Chewton
Congratulations to the City of Greater Bendigo on the fabulous McIvor Road underpass. This is a great example of continuous, connected infrastructure that makes travelling by bike and walking a real option for people of all ages and abilities. McIvor Road was a major barrier on an otherwise highly navigable shared path connecting Epsom and Spring Gully. Now, with the underpass complete, the entire journey is interrupted only by a handful of road crossings, most of which are minor, one of which is signalised. The underpass redraws the map for cycling in Bendigo. It’s a boon for families heading to Lake Weeroona, mountain bikers riding to the trails, kids riding to school, and commuters (kiss the traffic goodbye and enjoy a peaceful, uninterrupted journey in a green space). With freshly painted murals brightening the Mundy, Williamson and Miller streets underpasses, the trail is also proving increasingly popular with joggers, dog walkers and recreational cyclists. Connected, attractive and trafficfree trails like this add real value to our city. Keep up the good work. Nicola Dunnicliff-Wells, Flora Hill
Upgrade causes downturn The VicRoads website states that the upgrade to Napier Street will greatly improve the way people and traffic move through the busy White Hills area. Sounds good, but spare a thought for the retail outlets in White Hills who are already suffering from a large downturn in their weekly sales. With works continuing, the limited amount of parking and reduced foot traffic this situation will not improve over the winter months. Local residents are concerned, if people do not support their local shops there is a probability that they may not be around in the future. It may be great to have a nice new road for people to move through the area but not to the detriment of losing our White Hills identity We implore people to continue to support the White Hills shops even after the upgrade is completed. Bill Knight and Wendy Betts, White Hills

the historic law courts. Many people have been pushing for a museum for many years with little support. I notice that the mayor said the council was “supportive”, however, they need to be active or this project will be lost to private ownership as was Fortuna when council sat on their hands until it was too late. We cannot afford to let this fantastic opportunity slip through our fingers yet again. Fortuna was lost as a public asset despite federal and state support and having a comprehensive business plan fully developed, simply because council was not on board. Lobbying by all interested groups and stakeholders needs to start now for our own museum before it is converted into office space or apartments or whatever. Stuart Symonds, Bendigo
Council blunder One has to congratulate Ted Coleman on his well-written, clear and precise critique of council’s case to compulsorily acquire land and develop a Marong Business Park against the wishes of the people. (Opinion, Bendigo Weekly, April 26). He drew our attention to media statements made by certain councillors that underpin and defend council’s decision to compulsorily acquire good farm land. He showed the councillor’s claims about manufacturing’s eco-

nomic contribution, due diligence and “fake news” to be doubtful. His critique demonstrated just how far out of touch some of our representatives have become with the real people. He was right to assert council appears to want to be an entrepreneur, developer, financier and speculator, all with an unknown amount of ratepayers monies. It seems some councillors and staff act with impunity outside of their role as elected representatives and employees. Given the demonstrated weakness of council’s position it is now important to see what minister Richard Wynne will do with council’s application to apply the overlay, and whether he will give council permission to apply a public acquisition order over the land. Critics are not opposed to an industrial park, but it should be proven by those in favour that it will succeed and that business will contribute and provide employment. At the present time the evidence is just not there; it does not pass the pub test. Bill Collier, Golden Square

he argues it is unacceptable that ratepayers, particularly the less well-off, should be asked to shoulder the burden of extra costs when savings can be made. He also suggests readers will know which costly non-core ideas and crusades that deliver no tangible benefit for residents could be trimmed by council. Again Michael is spot on with his analysis of the core service of the council that should be delivered efficiently, or at the least cost possible to ratepayers. I have a simple challenge for Mayor O’Rourke and CEO Niemann. Tell us the ratepayers of Bendigo the amount of monies to date expended on the deplorable grab by council to “compulsory acquire” the Carter family farm at Marong. The legal fees should be easy to ascertain and divulge, calculating other costs may be a little more difficult but easily achievable and will be considerable. My guess the figure will be a shock to most ratepayers and could have been used instead of increasing charges for waste collection. Worse still, these costs have been incurred by council having flagrant disregard of recommendations of an independent panel. What happened to the open and accountable governance that was promised by councillors standing for election less than two years ago? Max Turner, Bendigo

Ride of sadness LARGE numbers of cyclists will gather in Epsom tomorrow morning for a ride with a difference, one where sadness and solemnity rules over the usual jubilation and joy associated with the privilege of riding a bike. This year’s Ride of Silence is the first since last year’s tragic death of promising cyclist Jason Lowndes, who died from injuries sustained on Friday, December 22, after he was struck by a car while training on the Sedgwick Road, south-east of Bendigo. The police investigation into Jason’s death is ongoing. For many in our community, the pain and sadness associated with Jason’s death will always be raw. Jason was an extraordinary talent, and by all accounts, an even better person, loved by all who were fortunate to know him. He was widely respected by his peers as a rider with a wonderful future in the sport he loved and enjoyed. Jason represented Australia at the Road World Championships in Qatar in 2016, finishing sixth in the gruelling under-23 road race, an effort that gave a glimpse of the potential he had to offer, and the dream
Editorial Comment he was never able to fulfil. His untimely death reminds all of us of the fragility of the life we are fortunate enough to have, and the Ride of Silence, an annual international bicycle ride to commemorate riders killed and support those injured while riding on public roads, continues to garner support as each year passes. So our Ride of Silence is also a ride of sadness. The ride helps raise awareness among motorists, among the public and governments, as well as police and other relevant stakeholders of the ever present dangers cyclists face when they are on the roads. It’s also a poignant time for cyclists to reflect on their own actions, and to be mindful of the need to obey the laws of the road at all times, and to be equally wary of other road users. The event has been held internationally since 2003, while in Bendigo, it’s been an important part of the
cycling calendar since 2006. The ride is by no means a celebration; nor is it meant to be. The Ride of Silence is supported by Victoria Police, and ride organisers have completed all necessary application requirements with VicRoads for the ride, which starts in Epsom from 9am on Saturday. The ride continues into the heart of the Bendigo CBD at a steady pace, all the way to the fountain, from where riders will disperse. The event also has in-principle support from the City of Greater Bendigo, and will take about 15 minutes to complete. There is nothing defiant about a ride such as this and it is also not a protest, but it is a gesture of solidarity and a reminder to us all to exercise caution and extreme care at all times when we are sharing the road. In a city where cyclists do not always enjoy the support and respect of other road users, Saturday morning’s ride is an opportunity for all road users to reflect on our attitude to others, our adherence to the law, and whether the decisions we make and the behaviour we choose to demonstrate are appropriate, and respectful towards others.

And to be honest, it makes as much difference as choosing to watch the latest Star Wars movie or not? The choice is yours. It’s probably a breather for the royals to let Meghan’s dad take some of the heat off them with his latest stunts, but when it comes down to it, it’s all about whether the happy couple have a good day. recognition: With a morning tea at PepperGreen Farm during National Volunteer Week.
Playing an important role
V
olunteers make up an important part of the Access Australia Group community, helping to strengthen social enterprises while encouraging social inclusion. At any one time, AAG has more than 60 volunteers working across its sites including PepperGreen Farm, Our Shed and Lancewood. AAG is a diverse, not-for-profit, community-based, charitable organisation, whose mission is to enable people with disadvantage or disability to enhance their life outcomes.
AAG operates a suite of services to achieve its mission, including training, employment, social enterprises, support services and social activities. “We acknowledge the generous contribution of our volunteers and will hold a morning tea during National Volunteer Week at PepperGreen Farm in North Bendigo,” CEO Michael Langdon said. “This is a great opportunity for us to say thank you to the volunteers who give their time, creativity and enthusiasm in helping AAG do what it does best, supporting people to achieve their life goals.”
s part of National Volunteer Week, the City of Greater Bendigo will hold functions to thank the more than 500 people who volunteer with the organisation. This year, the National Volunteer Week theme is: Give a little. Change a lot. The council’s chief executive officer Craig Niemann said National Volunteer Week was a great opportunity to celebrate the contribution of volunteers. “It’s our chance to say thank you to our volunteers for their continued efforts,” Mr Niemann said. “The city is very fortunate to have so many passionate and dedicated volunteers, many of whom have been with the organisation for many years. “We couldn’t do all that we do
without the help of all our volunteers. “Whether it’s supporting Bendigo’s most popular festivals, helping us provide food services or assisting tourists to experience the best of Greater Bendigo, volunteers are critical for us to provide the services we do. “Volunteering helps create stronger, more connected and more resilient communities. “We always welcome new volunteers, so if you have been thinking about putting your hand up to help, there are plenty of fantastic opportunities available with the City of Greater Bendigo.” For more information phone 5434 6000 or go to www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/volunteering
worthwhile: Bendigo council is always seeking more volunteers.
Thank You Dr Michael Langdon CEO, of Access Australia Group, would like to sincerely thank all our volunteers for their ongoing support and much appreciated help that they continue to give to PepperGreen Farm, Access Our Shed and Access Skills Training. The contribution that our volunteers provide is integral to the success of Access Australia Group’s services, providing support, friendship and skills to our participants.

A rewarding experience K aron and Dave Morcombe came across an advertisement seeking volunteers for Central Deborah Gold Mine more than 12 months ago at the Bendigo Volunteer Resource Centre. And have since found a somewhat different meaning to the word retirement, after discovering the joys of volunteering. Because every Tuesday and Wednesday you’ll find Karon and Dave at Bendigo’s historic Central Deborah Gold Mine, joining an enthusiastic band of volunteers and employees at one of Bendigo’s premier tourist attractions. “We’ve met lots of interesting people and some who are extremely well travelled,” Karon said, who volunteers as a surface guide. While Dave’s former mechanical engineering background is vital
as a mine maintenance volunteer, keeping the mine’s plant and equipment operational, including the gigantic stamping machine which now stomps into life periodically much to the delight of the younger visitors. “The kids really get a buzz when we fire up some of the old equipment, and an even bigger buzz when they successfully pan for gold,” Karon said. “The Morcombes have a great rapport with all our visitors and are a much appreciated addition to our team,” Central Deborah Gold Mine’s manager Karl Penrose said. ity Chiropractic Care is celebrating 10 years of service to the families of Bendigo and regional Victoria. The team pride themselves on providing personalised care to people of all ages and professions. To mark this remarkable milestone chiropractors Hamish Davidson and Rebecca Leddin, therapists Lesley Likens and Travis Saunders, along with receptionist Kirby Smith will be having an open day on Sunday, June 3 between 11am and 2pm. They will welcome past, present and new clients to join them for a barbecue with live music, kids activities and of course cake. Hamish and Bec practice a variety of techniques to cater for their diverse range of clients on an individual level. Other services provided include remedial massage, dry needling and cupping.
Remedial therapists, Travis and Lesley are also able to address a wide range of soft tissue complaints. Both modalities assist with relieving muscle tightness, improving circulation and recovering from injuries. Many people come in regularly for maintenance, but the team is also happy to see people with specific needs. “We see people of all ages, from newborns to centenarians, and office workers to manual labourers, sports people and expecting mums,” Hamish said. “And with winter around the corner, and we always expect a few coughing, firewood collecting, and skiing injuries, but we also see many people who are simply feeling a bit flatter than usual.” City Chiropractic Care at 233 Napier Street Bendigo look forward to meeting their clients regardless of their health issue. Call them today on 5443 0555.

This enables the clinic to offer a holistic approach to patients’ wellbeing. Brendan, a passionate osteopath
combines exercise with manual therapy, to treat his patients. He is interested in treating headaches, rib dysfunctions and lower back pain, with a special interest in treating and rehabilitating sporting injuries. Both Brendan and Nicole are trained in dry needling and taping and strive to help their patients achieve optimal health. Rosemary addresses the disruption of balance and harmony within the body, through her knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine and the connection between mind, body and spirit. She is especially interested in paediatrics, fertility, menopause and preventative treatments for issues such as headaches or migraines, hay fever, sinusitis, allergies, colds, flu, bronchitis and asthma. The right advice and a great price S
OUTHERN Cross Blinds’ range of Ziptrack blinds or exterior canvas awnings will help you utilise both your indoor and outdoor areas for maximum enjoyment. A Ziptrak enclosed verandah or patio will let the breeze in and keep unwanted guests out, while an exterior awning can also help reduce interior temperatures and glare. With so many blinds and awnings to choose from, the choice can be daunting, but Shane from Southern Cross Blinds can supply and install a range of Ziptrak blinds, canvas awnings, holland and roman blinds, timber venetians, vertical drapes, venetian blinds, plantation shutters, roller shutters, patio blinds, day/night blinds and security doors. Southern Cross Blinds, a family run business in High St Kangaroo Flat, has been
operating for 30 years and there probably isn’t anyone else in Bendigo with Shane’s experience and know-how to assist with your blinds. This makes Southern Cross Blinds a fantastic first port-of-call, even when you know exactly what you want. Shane will provide great advice, as well as taking meticulous measurements, giving you highly affordable quotations, and providing a professional installation service. Southern Cross Blinds, open Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings by appointment only at 141 High Street, Kangaroo Flat. You can phone Southern Cross Blinds on 5447 9011, visit their website www.southerncrossblinds.com or contact them on Facebook.

Fencing, doors, screens and more
OSS Bowden is shortly retiring, leaving Windridge Security Doors and Fencing in his son’s Cameron Austen’s capable hands, after originally establishing the now well-known and trusted business from a humble shed in Lockwood in 1994. “I’m finally looking forward to doing some jobs around the house,” Ross laughed , when quizzed what he had planned for his retirement. Presently Ross and Cameron lead a dedicated team of up to eight employees and three sub-contactors from their factory in Long Gully, designing manufacturing and installing custom designed, powder coated steel security doors and gates, glass-pool fencing and Metroll colorbond fencing. Operating for 30 years with more than 40 years’ combined experience, this family
owned and operated business is also an agent for Metroll which manufactures metal building products for fencing, roofing, rainwater tanks and structural fabrication. As an agent of Metroll supplies, Windridge is able to provide various styles of sheeting, with post and rails to suit. Alternatively, they can just supply materials and ready-made panels for the home handyman. Windridge Security Doors and Fencing, 39 to 41 Kinross Street, Long Gully. And just in case you can’t find their premises in Kinross Street just look for the world’s largest security door, which is just as impressive as Windridges’ service. Alternatively phone 5444 4190 or go to www.windridgesecuritydoors.com.au for more information.

Stock tracking app a worthy contender INNOVATIVE: AgriNous’ new sheep and goat digital platform makes recording sales a breeze.
APPLICATIONS FOR 2018 NOW OPEN
CATEGORIES:
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY $2,500 PRIZE!
N
OW in its ninth year the annual Bendigo Inventor Awards continues to inspire countless inventions and ideas across numerous fields embracing several categories, including agriculture, environmental sustainability and health with inventions like AgriNous. In 2015 lifetime stock agent Glenn Rea was becoming increasingly frustrated at what he viewed as old-fashioned booking systems in the sale-yards he was working in. Using his smartphone for a number of other applications, it became apparent to Glenn that the current day paper-based booking systems in sale-yards could be digitised. After searching the market for something that would streamline the booking system, and finding nothing, Glenn was inspired into action after speaking to colleague Joel Rockes, who suggested they investigated the possibility of building their own platform to fill this gap in the livestock sector. Glenn and Joel instinctively knew that digitisation of all livestock agent activities
would not only eliminate inefficiencies of information exchange through to the back office, but it would also set the foundation for important new compliance requirements relating to the tagging of sheep and goats in Victoria. AgriNous is a dynamic platform consisting of a rugged Android tablet, the Field App and a back-office system, instantaneously breaking down the communication problems between stock agents and the office. Working alongside stock agents throughout Australia, AgriNous has demonstrated that with minimal training and setup, any agent can pick up a tablet and start using it alongside existing paper systems within minutes. “AgriNous is very easy to use, even for an old bloke like me,” a stock agent said. If you have a good idea, or would like to find out more about the Bendigo Inventor Awards, visit www.bendigoinventorawards.com.au for more information. To find out more about AgriNous, visit www.agrinous.com.

CHURCH NOTICES
FROM THE BIBLE
Acts 2 v 1,2,3,4
When the day of Pentecost came they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the spirit enabled them.

Blue and gold ready to roll By JOEL PETERSON
IF you were to pick one word to sum up the Bendigo senior interleague squad, balance might be the most fitting descriptor. The BFNL senior and under-18 teams play the Hampden Football League at Warrnambool tomorrow in the annual AFL Victoria Community Championships, with the senior winner to move to eighth in the statewide rankings. Ten new faces will don the blue and gold at Reid Oval, with Eaglehawk’s Jonty Neaves named as emergency. The standout feature of the team is its versatility and mix of contested power and outside run. South Bendigo ruckman Kieran Strachan, Golden Square’s Jake Thrum, Matt Compston and Jayden Burke, Kyneton duo Pat McCarthy and Rhys Magin, Gisborne’s Jack Reaper, and Eaglehawk’s Brodie Collins, Jack Fallon and Neaves are the potential debutants in the squad. Jack Geary will again lead the league into battle this weekend, just days after being hospitalised with a knee infection. However, the side was struck a major blow before the final training session on Wednesday night at the QEO, with reigning Derrick Filo Medal winner Andrew Collins ruled out due to injury. Collins was best afield in last year’s loss to Ballarat and would have been a valuable weapon for third-year coach Brett Fitzpatrick to deploy in the centre or forward of the ball. “It’s disappointing to lose Andy

for sure, he’s just one of those guys who loves interleague footy. But it gives Jack Fallon an opportunity to step up and test himself at the higher level,” Fitzpatrick said. The mix of inside grunt and outside run in the BFL’s midfield looks to be its strength, with the likes of Adam Baird, Jake Moorhead, Kalan Huntly, Geary and Magin bringing both elements to the contest. The small forward line includes targets such as Sharp, Antonowicz and McPhee as well as marking op-

might be an asset for us. “Those guys put their hands up as forward players who are among the best in the competition. What it will mean is that hopefully we can put more pressure on them exiting our forward 50 and create those repeat chances at goal.” Bendigo has again stocked up with copious run out of defence, with key backs McCarthy, Tyler Miles and Jack Reaper complemented by Codie Price, Miller and Thrum. “Even if we get a heavy deck, it’s about our ball use and our ability to win it,” Fitzpatrick said. “I think you find generally teams from south of the divide are a bit more strongly built, especially through the hips, and play a bit closer to the ground. “We’ll be able to match it there, but we definitely think that our abil-
ity to run and use the ball on the outside will play to our strengths.” The Hampden League had its final training session last night and will again be coached by AFL great Jonathan Brown. The league will also take an under-18 squad on the road, to be again coached by Jason Stevens. The BFL side defeated Ballarat last year, and will this year be captained by Gisborne’s Baxter Slater, Golden Square’s Zack Shelton and Strathfieldsaye’s Daniel Clohsey. Clohsey and Castlemaine’s Jack Chester are holdovers from last year’s victorious squad, while the remaining players are new to the representative level. The under-18 game starts at noon, with the senior match from 2.30pm at Warrnambool’s Reid Oval. The match will be broadcast by Warrnambool radio station 3YB.
District leagues line up THE Loddon Valley Football Netball League returns to interleague competition this weekend when it hosts the Golden Rivers league at the QEO. The LVFNL has endured a two-year absence from interleague, and will re-enter the AFL Victoria Community Championships at the bottom of the rankings. Anthony Dennis will coach the LVFNL senior team upon its return to representative play. The team had its final training session last night at the QEO before Saturday’s clash. The Weekly understands AFL Central Victoria was hopeful of staging the LVFNL and North Central Football League matches as a double-header at the QEO, but the NCFL elected to play its match against Southern Football League at Boort. The LVFNL will also field an open netball team, to be coached by Carmen Shevlin.
Meanwhile, the Heathcote District Football League will travel to Geelong to take on the Geelong and District Football League. The two sides met at the QEO in 2012, and will face off at North Geelong tomorrow. Golden Square premiership coach Nick Carter will coach the HDFL after being an assistant to Dean Laidley last year.

Ahlise’s new start go and play there later in the year,” Hurst said this week. “I’ve always wanted to play college and it’s a great school so I’m really lucky.” Basketball runs in the Hurst family, her father Joe played four years at Northwest Missouri State University before coming to Australia to play with Hobart in the NBL in the 1990s. So good was “Jumping Joe” that he won the 1988 NBL MVP award and played two further seasons with Hobart along with campaigns in Europe. “I don’t really remember watching him play because I was too young, but I’ve heard lots of stories about his career,” Ahlise said. The junior Hurst has always been a highly-regarded prospect through under-age ranks, but in recent years her star has risen further. Straight after her trip to the US, she flew to a training camp with the Australian Gems under-19 team, in which she was selected earlier this year. “To get the opportunity it work with those coaches and players is really good, you learn so much but it was definitely a step up,” she said.
By JOEL PETERSON
FOR as long as she can remember, Ahlise Hurst has been immersed in the sport of basketball. Some of her earliest memories are sitting courtside watching her father Joe play, long before she stepped onto court herself. But the 18-year-old Bendigo Braves guard has forged her own path through the sport, a journey which is about to take her across the other side of the world for four years. After her ambition of simply wanting to follow in her father’s footsteps and play the game came a long-held ambition to go to college in the US. A fortnight ago that became a reality, with Hurst signing with the University of New Mexico on a scholarship. While her departure date isn’t set – she hopes it will allow her to play as much for the Bendigo Braves women’s team as possible – the former Mildura junior can’t wait to join the Lobos program in Albuquerque. “It’s really exciting, I was there two weeks ago and I can’t wait to
The point guard will likely not return for Bendigo this week as the team plays the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence at home on Friday and Dandenong on Sunday. Instead she’ll watch on as Kelly Wilson and Nadeen Payne lead the undefeated Braves into battle. The team will also be without centre Gabe Richards. She has no doubt that playing senior basketball, and working with the likes of Wilson, a three-time WNBL champion, has had a big impact on her game. “Being able to play with and lean from someone like Kelly every day is so helpful, she is so experienced and you just learn from watching the way she plays and controls the game,” Hurst said. And she hopes to be part of many more wins in Braves colours this season. “I think we’re playing great already, but that doesn’t mean we can’t improve,” she said. “We’re working to be better and make sure that every time we step onto the court we’re at our best.” OFF TO COLLEGE: Bendigo Braves guard Ahlise Hurst.
Hansen hits 100 DANIEL Hansen may only be 26, but as he hits 100 games with the Bendigo Braves this weekend he admits he feels a touch battle weary. “I would’ve been there for at least 150 games, and played more with the youth league. I feel about 80,” he laughed. Hansen notches the milestone on Sunday against Dandenong, in Bendigo’s second game of a testing weekend. The sharpshooter has increased his role in recent years from an occasional part of Ben Harvey’s side to a regular member of the team. “I definitely feel like I’ve stepped up into that bigger role and am really enjoying that,” he said. The Braves endured a loss to Melbourne last weekend, and Hansen said they have a round of revenge ahead of them. Bendigo plays Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence on Friday night in the team’s last game on the old court one at Bendigo Stadium.
Tobin sizes up WNBL debut CENTRE Becca Tobin has become the latest player to join the Bendigo Spirit ranks for the 2018/19 Women’s National Basketball League season. The 195-centimetre American will fill a position of need for the club alongside Nadeen Payne in the frontcourt. The former Arizona State star has held preseason spots with the Phoenix Mercury and Los Angeles Sparks in the
just rely on Ray (Turner) to do that work for us,” he said. “We have to really focus in on that and be stronger on the boards, we can’t allow them to have 12 offensive rebounds in a quarter like Melbourne did last weekend. “Hopefully we can cap it off with a win on Sunday in Dandenong.” Tonight’s double-header at Bendigo Stadium begins at 6pm with the women’s match.
A NEW mountain bike ride aimed specifically at women and girls is pushing ahead, with the third edition of the event to be held next weekend. Next Sunday, May 27, will see the Bendigo Mountain Bike Club host the Women’s and Girls Mountain Bike Challenge, which is set to be the biggest and best event yet. The challenge is designed to offer something different to women to get them on their bikes. “With the emphasis on challenge, the event is all about women and girls of
