The Weekly look at the local real estate market

Teamwork a winner

MANAGEMENT and staff at Bendigo Real Estate are celebrating the outstanding results achieved at the recent Real Estate Results Network annual awards held at Sydney’s iconic Luna Park. BRE won Regional Agent of the year 2019 with the Real Estate Results network, which includes more than 40 agencies, 70-plus offices and approximately 1300 real estate professionals across Australia and New Zealand. BRE director and licensed real estate agent Damien O’Shannessy said many factors had contributed to the firm’s success, including increasing and maintaining a strong market share and strong community connectivity through the sponsorship of local clubs and organisations. BRE supports Eaglehawk, Sandhurst and South Bendigo football and netball clubs, has raised valuable funds for Motor Neuron Disease research, sponsored Bendigo Special Developmental School and movie nights at Maiden Gully primary school to raise money for sporting equipment. The agency has also supported local cricket clubs including Sandhurst and Maiden Gully,

and is a major organiser of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s annual support of the RSL through the sale of poppies and badges. “Our days on market have also come down, saving owners time and introducing more out of town inquiry, while new property management techniques to make the department more efficient and give landlords and tenants more certainty and a better business experience have also been introduced.” FEDERAL member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters has met with local real estate agents concerned about Labor Party policies that could impact upon the real estate industry should the ALP win the upcoming federal election. Ms Chesters was the newly convened Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s Loddon Goulburn division’s first guest speaker, with up to 30 industry professionals attending the lunch held at Bendigo’s National Hotel. After outlining her party’s proposals to amend a suite of policies including those affecting negative gearing, dividend imputation and capital gains tax, Ms Chesters fielded ques-

The agents have the backing of industry bodies such as the REIV and the Real Estate Institute of Australia, which previously outlined its concerns for mum and dad investors who want to buy an existing investment property to supplement their retirement savings will no longer be able to claim a modest taxation deduction. The industry also has concerns for home owners who face

additional downward pressure on home prices in an already falling market, while the REIA believes renters could see their rents rise, and other industry stakeholders such as builders face potential challenges from any resulting slowdown in the property sector. The Loddon Goulburn REIV division is chaired by local agent Tom Maher, with other committee members including Darryn Mawby, Andrew Murphy, Matt Bowles, Brad Hinton, Jacinta McIvor, Nekti Tzouroutis and Young & Co Shepparton’s Michael Blake.

Bishop notes distress and eight months for sexually abusing two choirboys when he was the Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne in the 1990s. Cardinal Pell, 77, was found guilty by a jury in December

County Court Chief Judge Peter Kidd described Cardinal Pell’s abuse in the sacristy of St Patrick’s Cathedral as a, “brazen and forcible sexual attack on the victims.”

We acknowledge the courage of survivors living with the effects of abuse

last year of sexually abusing the choirboys after a mass in December 1996 and then assaulting one of them two months later.

BISHOP of Sandhurst Leslie Tomlinson has acknowledged Wednesday’s conviction of Cardinal George Pell as an occasion of great distress to many people. “At this time we are especially conscious of those who have suffered abuse and the effect such abuse has had on their lives,” Bishop Tomlinson said. “We acknowledge the courage of survivors living with the effects of abuse and seeking to rebuild their lives,” he said. Cardinal George Pell was sentenced to six years jail with a non-parole period of three years

Cardinal Pell was sentenced for five charges – one of sexual penetration of a minor under the age of 16 and four of an indecent act with a child under the

age of 16. Each charge carried a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment. Cardinal Pell will be a registered sex offender for life and be required to allow police to collect forensic samples from him. He continues to deny that he sexually abused the boys and has lodged an appeal against his conviction on three grounds, including that the jury verdict was unreasonable. The Court of Appeal is expected to hear Cardinal Pell’s case over two days in June.

LIBERAL VIEWS: Sam Gayed.

Liberals select Sam THE Liberal Party has selected Sam Gayed as its candidate in the Federal seat of Bendigo. Mr Gayed is a chartered engineer who has lived in Bendigo with his wife and three children since 2013. In a Liberal Party media release, Mr Gayed said, “I will be reaching out to as many people as I can. I’m looking forward to getting out to the streets and regional towns.” “We are a prosperous nation with a strong economy. I want to make sure the Bendigo region becomes even stronger, which is why I am standing as the Liberal Party candidate for Bendigo,” Mr Gayed said. Mr Gayed will contest the Federal seat of Bendigo with incumbent Lisa Chesters and Greens candidate Robert Holian. Responding to Mr Gayed’s selection at an announcement of funding for lighting and security upgrades at Truscott Reserve in Eaglehawk, Lisa Chesters urged Mr Gayed to engage with the community. “If you want to be the rep for Bendigo, you’ve got to speak up and engage and be around,” Ms Chesters said. “Bendigo wants someone who is going to be their voice, not just in Canberra, but here in the community,” she said.

Exhibition tram plan flags a cup winner A ROYAL-THEMED pop-up tram decked out in the vibrant red, white and blue colours of the British flag was unveiled yesterday at the Piazza in Rosalind Park. The tram was craned in on Wednesday evening to complement the upcoming exhibition Tudors to Windsors: British Royal Portraits exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery. The interior is in keeping with the royal theme and those sitting in the tram can learn about Prince

Albert Victor and Prince George’s visit to Bendigo when they officially opened Alexandra Fountain in 1881. A pop-up visitor information centre was also installed at the site. Mayor Margaret O’Rourke said thousands of visitors were expected to visit the Tudors to Windsors exhibition and the vibrant tram in the heart of the city would be a must-see attraction with the opportunity to take plen-

ty of photos and enjoy the city’s historic streetscape. “The Royal Pop-Up Tram will be a big drawcard and a great way to entice people visiting the gallery to spend longer in the city centre,” Cr O’Rourke said. “We hope that visitors will take the opportunity to do some shopping, visit Greater Bendigo’s other great attractions and eat at our many cafes and restaurants.” “Everyone has worked hard to get the W2 Class Tram ready. The tram is a wonderful eye-catching attraction on the piazza.” The tram is operating throughout the exhibition period and will be open to the public this Saturday, and 9am to 1pm five days a week, initially serving coffee and tea, cold drinks and biscuits. It will also be lit up at night.

Climate in focus

SCHOOL strike for climate Bendigo organisers will be striking for climate action today. Local organiser, 15-year-old Mathilda Stewart from Bendigo South East is inviting older people to join the school strikers. “Everyone is welcome to join us and show support for climate action,” Ms Stewart said. The group’s aim is to show the power and strength of young people, as they fight for climate justice as part of a global community. “We are proud to be part of a student led global moment. Our group consists of students from across Bendigo, ranging in ages from 10 to 18, from various schools,” Ms Stewart said. We hope this movement can provide a pivotal opportunity for the school students of Bendigo to recognise and embrace the change that they can create in the world.

“One focus of our protests is the lives of children who will grow up with the consequences of climate change and global warming. We are committed to doing what we can to create a safer world for ourselves and for the future.” The strike will be a peaceful gathering that welcomes all students, particularly younger children, and enables them to feel safe and to have their voices heard along with children all around the world. “We will march together for a better future,” Ms Stewart said. “We are young people from around the globe, banding together to fight for what will be our future and our lives. “We will go down in history as the generation that, instead of waiting for people with a voice to do something, made a voice for ourselves.” The march will start at 1.30pm today from the Bendigo Library Gardens.

A bright future FC Eaglehawk is set to receive lighting and security upgrades at Truscott Reserve thanks to a $219,300 federal government Community Sport Infrastructure grant. Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters applauded the club for negotiating a competitive application process to secure funding. “One of the reasons this club was successful was because of its commitment to women’s sport,” Ms Chesters said. The club’s junior women’s participation has swelled to 15 teams from 11 last season and FC Eaglehawk’s women’s senior team is looking as strong as ever according to club president Ben Pengelly. Mr Pengelly was overjoyed when he was told the club had been successful in their application. “It was incredible. I was over the moon. A figure such

as this going to a local community club shows just how proactive of a club we are,” he said. The existing lights at Truscott Reserve are more than 20 years old and were originally financed by FC Eaglehawk. The much-needed upgrades will allow the club to host night matches in the future and attract National Premier League clubs to Bendigo to inspire its juniors. “We will be applying to have a lot of Saturday night games next year. It gives us the opportunity to have functions after the game and that brings in the community a lot more,” Mr Pengelly said. The Community Sport Infrastructure Grant supports small to medium scale projects that boost community participation in sport. The club is hopeful the upgrades will commence shortly, pending the release of funds from council.

Dahlia and arts on now THE Eaglehawk Dahlia and Arts Festival is featuring the Melbourne-based The Itchy Feet Pep Band to complement 19 separate activities at this year’s festival. The theme adopted for 2019 is “We are One“ to demonstrate an inclusive community, one that accommodates all, including those with a disability. With this in mind a special effort has been made to provide facilities for those with a disability, with every event listed in the brochure giving information of accessibility and facilities available. The festival will be officially opened by Daniel Giles OAM and former young citizen of the year for the City of Greater Bendigo. Daniel has autism and will speak about his experience in living with a disability. The festival runs until March 22 and includes art shows, library displays, busking competition, gala fair, CV lion team performance, primary schools foot race, a street parade, flower show, free Sunday family day, cycling criterium, heritage display, a trivia night and finally a free film night at the Star Cinema. Cement firms mine site

By NICHOLAS NAKOS

A NEW cement infrastructure plant at Fosterville Gold Mine will create 60 jobs during construction and 30 new, ongoing, full-time roles according to the Minister for Resources Jaclyn Symes. Fosterville Gold Mine already employs 600 staff and has reported some of the highest gold grades recorded worldwide in recent times. Production in 2018 is expected to exceed 600,000 ounces, more than double last year’s output.

An expansion of the mine was welcomed by Ms Symes who said Victoria’s wealth was built on gold mining and the industry remains integral to creating regional jobs Fosterville’s mining licence was extended to 2035 last year, providing mine owners, investors, staff and local communities with certainty for the future. The Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan also endorsed the development saying,“expansions like this only continue to spur on the phenomenal growth of an international success story that is

so good for the greater Bendigo community.” Fosterville Gold Mine has also partnered the City of Greater Bendigo to launch a $60,000 funding initiative, the Great Ideas Grant, which hopes to kick start social innovation in the community. The grant will be available for successful recipients to undertake projects that will improve the community’s wellbeing and sustainability. City of Greater Bendigo deputy mayor Rod Fyffe said this funding will help support people in the community who have great ideas.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for local people to take action to transform challenges into opportunities. After all it only takes one great idea to make a difference,” Cr Fyffe said. The Great Ideas Grant is open to incorporated organisations and businesses with the Bendigo PepperGreen Farm an example of a successful social innovation in Bendigo. The farm provides training and employment for people with a disability and upskills them across a range of areas including retail, tourism and hospitality.

WOMEN all over the globe will soon benefit from a worldfirst clinical trial thanks to the women of Bendigo and local medical practices. The aim of the trial is to find the most effective strategies for optimising cervical screening in HPV vaccinated women. HPV or human papillomavirus vaccine is often called the cervical cancer vaccine. The trial is the largest clinical trial ever to be conducted in Australia, aiming to recruit 82,303 women. Results from the first phase of the trial supported major changes to the National Cervical Screening Program in 2017. Many Bendigo women are already supporting the trial and now the VCS Foundation is calling on even more local women to participate. VCS needs 8000 more Australian women aged 25-38 years to participate in the trial to ensure they understand the best way to refine HPV testing, especially in women who have been offered HPV vaccination. The trial is being led by the VCS Foundation and Cancer Council NSW. VCS Foundation is the only organisation worldwide to have had both a cervical screening registry and an HPV vaccination registry. Associate Professor Marion Saville, co-principal investigator and VCS Foundation executive director, says phase two of the trial is now crucial to influence evidence-based practice here and around the world. “For the scientific evidence generated to be strong and robust we need a significant number of participants, in this case 82,303 Australian women,” she said.

Drones and industry Dr Spencer emphatically endorsed the program at Bendigo TAFE saying it’s giving students who enrol the skills to use drones in their industries. “They take those skills into their workplaces and have an impact on organisations in this region,” he said. One of the benefits of drone technology is its ability to collect more data in a safer way, while also being accessible to small business owners. “Even a fairly good drone costs about $2500. We know a lot of farmers use drones for everyday tasks,” Dr Spencer said.

“Anywhere a lot of distance needs to be covered, drones can do it a lot faster than a person on foot or in a truck.” Bendigo TAFE Food and Fibre Centre of Excellence director Nicole Broe will now use the findings from this program to direct the curriculum. “This program helps us get an understanding from an educator, student and industry perspective about how we can integrate the drone technology into the curriculum,” Ms Broe said. There is an appetite for more drone programs, with Bendigo TAFE receiv-

ing more than 200 responses of interest for an upcoming short course. “Students are loving it. They are very excited and said this training has been engaging and they’ve learnt so much,” Ms Broe said. Bendigo TAFE is committed to being at the forefront of drone technology, despite it being a rapidly evolving space. “We would like to be the front runners when it comes to innovative technology and we want to educate people to use drones in an appropriate way,” Ms Broe said. – Nicholas Nakos

Fans can expect to hear some of Chambers’ tracks from her latest album Campfire and old classics such as The Captain and Not Pretty Enough. “When it comes to live performance, I love to go back and play a lot of the fan favourites,” she said. “I always play a couple of songs from my new record, but I could never imagine doing a gig without playing some of my old tracks. They are such a big part of my life,” Chambers said. She has been encouraged to return to Bendigo time and time again because of its eclectic music

scene that is always well supported by locals. “It’s such a great scene in Bendigo. There’s always a lot of support for local music. It’s great when the community gets behind local musicians and that was part of the appeal of this gig,” she said. As many as 1200 people are expected to attend One Hot Country Night, making it the biggest music event to be held at the Botanic Gardens. There will be plenty of open spaces for picnic blankets and chairs at the gardens, with the event starting at 1pm and Kasey Chambers expected to be on stage at 6.30pm.

A PILOT program between Bendigo TAFE and The Institute for Drone Technology that looked at the impact of drones in industry concluded last Friday with a flying exercise in Strathfieldsaye. The chief executive officer of The Institute for Drone Technology Dr Joel Spencer said that drone technology has moved into industry a lot more in recent years. Agriculture, horticulture, building, mining and conservation land management are just some of the ways drone technology is being used by industry at the moment.

Care improved

LEARNED GATHERING: Rachel Winterton, Don Douglass and Irene Blackberry. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

A THREE-YEAR La Trobe University study aimed at improving dementia carers’ access to local services and support, launched this week in Bendigo. People living with dementia, their carers, and organisations involved in dementia care from across the region gathered at the La Trobe Art Institute on Tuesday. The Webster Rural and Regional Dementia Care Project is funded through the bequest of Gordon Webster, and is focused on Bendigo and surrounding areas. Head of La Trobe’s John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing Research,

Professor Irene Blackberry, said after a dementia diagnosis it is often challenging for family and friends to navigate available support options. “After a dementia diagnosis, carers need access to a whole range of support, including financial, emotional and social,” Prof. Blackberry said. “Often the processes are confusing, and services are insufficiently linked up, making it a challenging experience for some carers. “This study aims to come up with innovative solutions, to ensure dementia carers feel supported and in control while they navigate life after the

diagnosis of a loved one.” The project will utilise online surveys and oneon-one interviews to determine how support is provided, and whether there are gaps in dementia care pathways. Participants will include health care providers, dementia support agencies and carers’ networks, as well as the carers themselves, from across the City of Greater Bendigo. “Although all the work will be conducted in Bendigo, we hope that the innovative solutions that come out of this project will have application across all of regional Victoria,” Prof. Blackberry said.

MAKE THE CALL ASK YOUR ENERGY COMPANY FOR A BETTER DEAL LOCAL LAUGHS: Ash Greblo.

As of January 1st, providers have dropped prices on their most expensively priced plans due to pressure from the Government. But if you really want to save, simply call your energy company and ask them for a better deal. You could lower your bill by $600 a year. Visit our website for tips on calling your energy company.

Festival calls city comic GROWING up in Bendigo provided plenty of good material for comedian Ash Greblo, who has teamed up with Andrew Portelli, and Urvi Majumdar for their new show Comedy Good Time, with an hour of laughs at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. By day, Greblo fills in time as a skater between gigs while his co-stars adhere to more mundane careers as a lawyer and teacher, but by night they are three of Melbourne’s most exciting comedians, performing regularly at some of Melbourne’s best venues. “This will be my third show in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival,” Greblo said. “All three of us have different styles of comedy, I’m a lot more high energy but I think there is an underlying tone across all of our material that is just us trying to have fun and not taking anything too seriously. “Andrew and Urvi are so funny and so talented that I’m feeling the pressure in this show a little more than usual but that’s good thing, it’s an honour to share a stage with comics that are good. “The most exciting part for me though is it’s a whole new show from last year’s festival, so all new jokes that I’ve spent the year working on and some really fun new ones about growing up in Bendigo.” Comedy Good Time starts April 8 and runs for two weeks at Vault 10 Federation Wharf. Dogs ease the pain FOUR-LEGGED furry companions will pop up all over La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus, as an innovative program to help veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder. The pilot is part of a four-year, $2 million national project funded by the Australian government, and led by La Trobe’s School of Psychology and Public Health. It will see eight puppies – a mixture of Lagotto Romagnolos and Labradors – adopted by Bendigo staff and students for up to 12 months, while they

train to become mental health assistance dogs. Lead researcher Tiffani Howell said the dogs have special dispensation to go virtually everywhere with their owners, including to lectures, offices, libraries, cafes and on public transport. “It is important that the dogs get used to all kinds of people and environments, to ensure that they are comfortable in a wide range of settings,” Dr Howell said. Dr Howell said it is hoped that the dogs, once living with veterans, will reduce their symptoms.

“We expect that the dogs will improve the veterans’ sleep quality, as well as confidence to socialise with others in their community and engage in everyday life,” she said. The Centre for Service and Therapy Dogs Australia have selected the puppies and will closely monitor the progress of them and their trainers. “We are already working closely with veterans, consulting them on their needs, and with the CSTDA to ensure the dog training program responds to those needs,” she said.

Minister for Veterans Affairs’ Darren Chester was pleased to see the trial progressing, with the puppies being selected and fostered in preparation for their new and critical roles supporting veterans. “Once trained, these dogs will provide muchneeded support to those veterans with PTSD selected for the pilot program,” Mr Chester said. Staff and students were carefully selected by the research team to become puppy raisers and socialisers, to ensure the dogs have enough exercise, socialisation and stimulation.

Royal train service on track VISITORS to an upcoming royal portrait exhibition will be able to travel there in style, by catching a historic train to Bendigo Station. The train will operate on eight Saturdays between March and July, to coincide with the royal portrait exhibition Tudors to Windsors, being held at the Bendigo Art Gallery. The service will travel between Castlemaine and Bendigo, with a special launch train going from Southern Cross Station to Bendigo tomorrow, Saturday, March 16. Run by the Seymour Rail Heritage Centre and Victorian Gold-

fields Railway, the train will have several fully restored carriages, including two that were used by members of the royal family when touring Victoria. The carriages, state cars four and five, were used for the 1954 tour by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip and in 1983 when Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales visited Victoria. Passengers on the train will be able to travel in heritage carriages, including the 1955 steel car Mitta Mitta, the parlour car Yarra and a 1937 dining carriage from the Spirit of Progress.

Bare bones and blues

HOT on the heels of an appearance at the Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival last year, Buddy Knox is back for a gig at the Handle Bar on March 29. Knox has carved up the blues scene around Australia since 2007, notching his blues belt with all the big ticket Australian festivals from Bridgetown to Bendigo to Bluesfest. He won the Sydney Blues Society Performer of the Year twice, and continues to share his old school blues style with fans. Knox plays with smooth finesse,

in the tasty authentic style of the old legends. Armed with his signature 335 Gibson, or more recently in acoustic sets, the Maton, his devotion to the art form is genuine. His recent move to acoustic blues gives fans the intimate experience of bare bones genuine blues, Knox style. Buddy Knox plays the Handle Bar, 73 Mitchell Street, at 6pm on Friday, March 29. Filmmaker shares his craft at Zinda AUSTRALIAN filmmaker Saidin Salkic will premiere two films at the La Trobe Art Institute, as part of the Bendigo Zinda Festival. Salkic’s art films redefine style and substance and as he says are “motivated by the politics of the soul”. As well as film Salkic also paints, and says his artwork is a subconscious journey into colours using different techniques and styles. “I am in a way a symbol of my birth country of Bosnia,” he said. “I am constantly interviewed for TV stations regarding my work and the

of my film Waiting for Sevdah. The film is having its world premiere at the LAI. “The past is like a long distance runner, it never gives up or completely leaves the present, but it is our experiences that make

us who we are as humans and as artists. “My honours degree was in regards to my first film about the Srebrenica genocide called Karasevdah: Srebrenica Blues, that is now considered one of the most unique films of that genre.” The Srebrenica genocide occurred in July 1995 when more than 8000 Bosnians, mainly men and boys, in and around the town of Srebrenica were massacred. You can see Saidin Salkic’s films Waiting for Sevdah and Silence’s Crescendo at the LAI at 5.30pm, on Wednesday, March 20.

Recycling theme for artists RECYCLING is the theme of this year’s Maldon Art Walk competition, artists having the choice to produce works responding to the phrase – One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Presented by the Maldon Artists Network, the exhibition runs from March 16-31, coinciding with the Castlemaine State Festival. Sculptures and installations will be displayed in participating shop windows, hotels, cafes, and courtyard gardens. With a total prize pool of $3000, presentations

will be made by Ballarat Art Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, on opening night at the Maldon Neighbourhood Centre, 5pm, Saturday, March 16. Two guest artists will also present works this year – Debra Goldsmith and Heather Ellyard. Debra will show two of her intricate chandeliers made of recycled plastic bottles, while Heather is known for her delicate installations using found objects. Malik plans to ditch diversity

IS it time to ditch diversity? That’s the question influential British commentator Kenan Malik will be discussing with La Trobe University community planner Julie Rudner in Bendigo next month. “Diversity has become a catchphrase and has lost its meaning, but I have yet to identify a better word to use,” Ms Rudner said. “Like multiculturalism, it hides an underlying assumption that different social, ethnic and religious groups are discrete and homogenous. There is far more interaction and blending, so to speak, at the local neighbourhood scale for instance, than the categories suggest.” Malik is visiting Australia as a guest of the Welcoming Cities conference in Brisbane, and is including Bendigo in his speaking tour for

SPEAKER: Kenan Malik. a Bendigo Writers Festival Bookmark event on Monday, April 8. A broadcaster and highly regarded newspaper columnist, Malik is the author of many books on social difference, harmony and ethnic diversity. He cuts through the

myths created by identity politics to help us think more clearly about what kind of society we want to live in. “I am really excited to speak with Kenan,” Ms Rudner said. “He offers a much more nuanced conversation about our cities and the deep sociocultural, political transformations that are occurring. “We need to grapple with issues of polarisation, free speech, violence and power, so we can have welcoming communities.” Diversity and the Welcoming City, with Kenan Malik and Julie Rudner, takes place at The Capital, View Street, Bendigo, at 6pm, Monday, April 8. Tickets are $20. Bookings 5434 6100 or online via Bendigo Writers Festival website.

Ita’s a new broom

A fair go for all

EXCELLENT editor and great gal Ita Buttrose confronts a pongy pile of the old proverbial in her first days as chair of the Australian Broadcasting Commission. With her bucket of insight and the shovel of integrity, the watching and listening public expect her to get this mess cleaned up quick smart. She can sweep away the spiders that lurk in dark corners, flick down the cobwebs woven by evicted arachnids, wipe off the dust that filters the news and current affairs, air out the smoke and toss out the mirrors. If the obstacles which prevent the restoration and advancement of our national broadcaster remain insurmountable to someone of Ita’s calibre, then the time will have come to sell the ABC. Sally Anne Pethebridge, Bendigo

WELL done Robert Smallpage on your letter in the Bendigo Weekly, March 8, illustrating the cavalier officer attitude at the City of Greater Bendigo in spending our money on replacing perfectly good roundabouts with expensive newer versions for minimal gain. Officers have form for replacing something functional with a slightly more refined offering at a massive cost to the ratepayer purse. We all remember a seat in the Hargreaves Street west end that was replaced by a sleeker curved version at a cost of $26,000. With the CEO, Craig Niemann, on an annual salary package approaching $350,000 and three directors on packages between $220,000 and $240,000, it is not difficult to see how they have a different mindset. As more than half of Bendigo’s residents receive incomes of less than $45,000 yearly you can see why residents have a different set of spending priorities. Don’t despair, there is good news. I believe a petition has recently been submitted to council calling for the setting of targets for community satisfaction as per Recommendation 51 from the Independent Review. Hopefully, this will lead to a greater focus on customers’ priorities, not officers. Colin Carrington, Heathcote

The Bronx of Bendigo SAD to see the once family-friendly and inviting Hargreaves Mall slowly turn into the abomination that it now is. As a past resident and ratepayer of Bendigo who now resides interstate, I can’t help but visit the mall when in town and note its decline towards becoming the Bronx of Bendigo. While I’m aware of the controversy of the redevelopment over past years, today I saw some cheap and nasty attempts, what I can only assume are to encourage people to frequent the place, for instance the mound of artificial grass with some plastic tables. Give it a break. Interestingly, the town where I reside now is thinking of turning one of our streets into a mall. Imagine my horror when I saw a council-sponsored poster in a shop window asking for feedback about the proposal with example photos of various malls across Australia. Guess which mall was featured? I could not contact my local councillor quick enough to advise that the Hargreaves Mall was an excellent example of what to do if you want to kill off a street, its businesses and its community spirit. Those councillors who then approved the Hargreaves redevelopment and its funding, should hang their heads in shame. Tony Flett, Sorell, Tasmania

Acknowledgment please READING the city of Bendigo council’s Implementing The Review – Final Report where the combined savings for savings, deleted expenditure and costs avoided amounted to a total savings of $6.9 million for an offset cost of $2.7m. Not bad for a submission submitted to council by Michael McKenzie and Edward Coleman, who had nothing personal to gain except to save the council and the ratepayers’ money. So why did both Cr Fyffe and the CEO Niemann fight so hard against the review when submitted (a number of times I must mention) for it to be implemented? I notice that in the report there is a big glossy photo of both Cr Fyffe and Mr Niemann smiling like Cheshire cats like it was their idea. Sorry, all credit must go to Mr McKenzie and Mr Coleman because had it not been for their personal visions and hard unpaid

PICK OF THE WEEK: Shadows in Maldon. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN For more photos go to www.newbendigophotos.com work nothing would have happened and we would still be losing money. We the ratepayers would be none the wiser of the real instigators. This council proudly gives recognition to members of the public for their special achievements, so come on councillors, would it not now be fitting to present a public award in some form at a council meeting to these gentlemen to show our appreciation for their time and effort? Robert Smallpage, Huntly

Future in good hands WE unfortunately hear too many negative stories about the young people of today. Negative stories are more newsworthy but in my experience the younger generations display as much, if not more, community mindedness as any age group. Recently a young player at our club suffered a serious spinal injury which will result in significant and on-going medical treatment. A group of younger members of the club got together to plan the best way they could assist their teammate. This culminated in them organising a day of entertainment and fundraising at Ewing Park

that was an outstanding success. $30,000 was raised, which far exceeded our expectations. To see the leadership, organisation, planning and hard work that these young people displayed certainly impressed everyone involved. It is stories like this that should should make us all confident that the future indeed is in good hands. Shane Hartney, President United Cricket Club

Poor value FOLLOWING the recent letters in the Bendigo Weekly on Friday, March 8 – Roundabout riddle, Retain our independence and One hand clapping is a fair summary of our council. Once again the council, that we elected two years ago and have to put up with for another two years, has hoodwinked the community. The GovHub fiasco is another prime example of gross lack of consultation and inclusion. More decisions made behind closed doors, the lack of transparency on decisions that effect the whole community is appalling and the decision being made to sell the city offices beggars belief. It is not council’s building to sell, it belongs to the community, paid for and kept in good condi-

tion by our rates and charges imposed by the council officers. How much investigation into the potential of this building has been done? From my understanding this present building was designed to extend the building by another two floors, I hope that someone from the council will either confirm or deny this. The mayor makes the statement that it will be good for the CBD, which is pie in the sky – the CBD is dead. No parking – some over-zealous parking inspectors making sure they get their daily total is a real deterrent for people. The disgraceful alterations to some of the roundabouts, especially the one at Mundy Street and Lyttleton Terrace appears that council don’t want people coming into the CBD. The ironic thing is that some years ago this GovHub proposal was muted under a state Labor government that was going to relocate state government departments to the present marketplace site, but was scuttled by the incoming Jeff Kennett-lead Liberal government with the full support of the Bendigo city council. Residents are getting poor value for the charges imposed. Ivan Kitt, Bendigo

works by some of the world’s greatest painters and photographers included. There’s also a suite of other attractions that have already popped up to accompany the Tudors to Windsors, with this week’s high profile installation of a suitably decorated tram at the bottom of Rosalind Park, and the launch of a Royal train from Castlemaine to Bendigo tomorrow. There will be other events and opportunities to appreciate both these support acts, and the main event, which continues through until the middle of July. Leading into our city’s traditionally colder and perhaps quieter months, the timing of this exhibition allows it to capitalise on the huge crowds expected to flock to the city for this year’s Easter celebrations, and continue through until

the conclusion of the winter school holidays. There’s already a sense of anticipation building about Easter and the lure of three generations of Imperial dragons parading through city streets for the first and likely only time. We’ve become used to the promise of never before scenes in Bendigo, thanks to the Bendigo Art Gallery and its now established track record for producing high quality landmark exhibitions, dating back about a decade. But this year we are going to be spoilt for choice when Loong, Sun Loong and the brand new Dai Gum Loong take over the central business district for one day only, late in April as part of the city’s Easter celebrations and the spectacular gala parade. Let’s hope the hospitality, retail and accommodation sectors do experience a significant and much needed boost to trade across the next four months, and that the benefits of our city hosting such a significant exhibition, are both many and shared.

YOU don’t need to be a royalist to appreciate the significance of the latest art exhibition to premiere at the Bendigo Art Gallery, with Tudors to Windsors set to be unveiled tomorrow. But it probably helps. This stunning display of the British monarchy includes portraits, fashion, armour and other personal effects of members of the royal family from throughout the ages. They’ve been assembled into yet another major exhibition by our own Bendigo Art Gallery with the same intention and goal of creating a world-class display that also brings thousands of visitors and a significant boost to our city’s economy. For the next four months we can expect Bendigo to be an even greater hive of local activity and national or even international attention as the expected crowds flock to our city to experience the Bendigo Art Gallery, and hopefully many of the region’s other great attractions. There’s more than 500 years of the monarchy’s incredible history wrapped up in this exhibition, with

HEATHCOTE Primary School students were ahead of the pack this morning as they celebrated Ride2School Day, a week early, with a ride along the O’Keefe Rail Trail. While the official Ride2School Day around the nation is next Friday, the school teamed up this morning with volunteers from the Friends of Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail, who supported the students with a midweek bike check-up and assistance with road crossings along the trail. Acting principal, Lex Johnstone saw the day as great opportunity to promote the rail trail, which passes within 20 metres of the school’s back gate. “This gives some kids a chance to ride on the rail trail for the first time and to maybe do a longer ride,” he said. “Not all kids have the opportunity to do a five to six kilometre ride with their families.” The school’s Ride2School Day

event started approximately sixkilometres from the school at the Mia Mia-Derrinal Road, with several pick up points along the way for students who lived closer or who wanted to ride a shorter distance. Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail president Garry Long was only too keen to support the event. “Our focus is on enabling people to experience off-road trails, including the O’Keefe Rail Trail,” he said. “Developing an asset and encouraging people to use it is our core business, so we’re working with schools close to the rail trail.” The group, which has a very active membership, has worked in the past with Axedale Primary School. “One thing we noticed there was the increasing engagement of parents over time,” Mr Long said. “Some of them who might not have ridden a bike since they were at school wanted to get on board –

We’re looking forward to developing a similar relationship with Heathcote Primary School.” According to Bicycle Network, students who ride or walk to school contribute to their minimum physical activity level of 60 minutes per day.

They are also more focused and ready to learn compared to those who are driven. With many local schools within a whistle’s blast of an off-road path or rail trail, Ride2School Day could be the perfect opportunity for students and parents alike to hop on a bike. – Nicola Dunnicliff-Wells

THE LAST DAYS OF THE ROMANOV DANCERS Kerri Turner Harper Collins $29.99

Final curtain falls in Petrograd WINTER is coming – and so, too, for the average citizen of Russia are the desperate privations that accompany full-blown war. As German troops move into the empire’s westernmost provinces, however, life for the elite of Petrograd society remains virtually unchanged. Petrograd – as St Petersburg has been officially retitled in a move to make the grand city appear more patriotically Russian – is the seat of power of Tsar Nikolai

II and his family, an allpowerful royal dynasty that not only rules the country but also celebrates arts such as dance. To be a principal of the Romanovs’ Imperial Russian Ballet is the ultimate aim of fledgling danseurs such as Luka Zhirkov, whose father barely manages to support himself while working in a factory and whose brother is now fighting bitterly to keep the would-be invaders at bay. As the closing months of 1914 unfold, Luka’s standing

soars, buoyed at least in part by his association with prima ballerina Mathilde Kschessinska, who almost inexplicably draws the young corps member ever deeper into her acquaintanceship. For the tempestuous Valentina Yershova, emerging quickly as a celebrity in her own right, a personal battle to rival that waged by Russia’s starving soldiers brews. Valentina has been traded by her original “protector” – one of the rich and influential older men who

traditionally keep a young dancer as a mistress – and is now at the mercy of Maxim Sergeivich, a volatile and attimes cruel and calculating newspaper columnist who openly craves the approval of Tsarina Alexandra and her closest advisor (and reputed lover), “mad monk” Grigori Rasputin. In this debut novel Sydney author and ballet teacher Kerri Turner weaves historic figures and events into an engrossing, unpredictable, heartrending

Fosterville Gold Mine Mining Licence Extension Notification to Landholders This notification is to inform landholders of an application to extend Fosterville Gold Mine’s Mining Licence MIN5404. In recent times, Fosterville Gold Mine (FGM) has experienced record production and continued growth, with a prosperous outlook for the future. Predictive modelling indicates that mineralised zones within the mine lease exhibit significant resource and reserve growth potential, with multiple zones of high grade economic mineralisation open ended and untested at depth. The extension of MIN5404 to the south and north will allow access to extensions of known mineralisation that have the potential to yield significant mineral reserves. MIN5404 An application for the proposed Mining Licence (MIN) Extension to MIN5404 was submitted to the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR) in October 2018. The application was submitted by Fosterville Gold Mine Pty Ltd, wholly owned by Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd (KL Gold) and is for a licence term equal to that of the current MIN5404. The application comprises a total extension area of 11.3 km² and will extend the current MIN5404 total area from 17.2 km² to 28.5km². MIN5404 has recently been renewed and will expire on 24th August 2035. The proposed variation area includes private land and Company owned land (Figure 1). The private land is zoned rural living zone, rural conservation zone and farming zone, all entirely within the Greater City of Bendigo Shire, Central Victoria. Work Program Details The extension to the mining licence area MIN5404 is required for the following proposed works: • Supporting development (drill platforms) • Development and infrastructure The infrastructure developed will be utilised as an underground drilling platform with the intention to prove up Mineral Resources extending from the current MIN5404 into the newly proposed areas. Subsequent to successful definition of resources, development of workings to access and mine the resource will be required. The underground mining will be undertaken using standard hard rock mining techniques with all material being extracted and delivered to the surface via current mine portals.

Please contact the Fosterville Gold Mine Community Team via the general enquiries email and phone. You can also follow us on Facebook and find further information regarding this application at www.klgold.com McCormick’s Road, Fosterville, VIC 3557

Party time for Bendigo Sleep Lab

W

OULD you believe Linda Sawyer and her colleagues at Bendigo Sleep Lab are celebrating their 10th anniversary after treating countless people for a broad range of sleep related including snoring, sleep apnoea, circadian rhythm disorders and insomnia? Originally a mobile service called Sleep Apnoea Support Services Bendigo, but due to the large amount of people throughout central Victoria utilising their services, this was not ideal for the long term. “Our first premises was on McCrae Street in the lounge room of an old house,” Linda said. “Then we upgraded and hired rooms in a medical practice in Kangaroo Flat for 12 months before moving to our present location in 2012, where we have a designated reception, waiting room and three treatment rooms.” Today Linda and eight staff offer an extensive range of services including sleep and respiratory specialist consultations as well as in-home and hospital sleep studies, CPAP therapist appointments (sales, servicing and hire).

REST EASY: With Linda Sawyer (left) and some of the team from Bendigo Sleep Lab. Photo: GARRY PATERSON You’ll rest easy knowing the Bendigo Sleep Lab has been accredited with the Sleep Health Foundation Code Of Practice (CPAP) guidelines since 2013. “We also educate our clients about sleep hygiene and light therapy devices, which are also available for hire,” Linda said. “We can also hire positional devices

(NightShift) and supply nasal airway opening devices, helping to mute snoring.” Bendigo Sleep Lab can also supply Neonate respiratory monitors to Bendigo Health newborns that need monitoring at home and supply medical grade humidification for those in palliative care or have compromised airways.

“Finally I would like to thank our fantastic clients for supporting a local business and all the physicians that refer us, throughout central Victoria,” Linda said. Bendigo Sleep Lab 406 High Street, Golden Square, phone 5447 8827. www.bendigosleep.com.au

Support helps seniors stay at home F

Fighting towards a cure I

THINK I need to go to hospital, I said to my wife as I struggled to walk the three metres from the kitchen to the dining table with my son’s birthday cake. I had been ill over the past weeks with what I thought was the flu, but it the crippling stomach pains which finally stopped me. My name is Rowan Tierney and this is my story of how I’m dealing with incurable cancer. This doesn’t happen to people like me, I’ve thought constantly over the past two years. I have always played sport, eat a varied diet of fresh foods which I cook at home, never smoked and rarely drink. I am young, educated and employed with great support networks in family and friends but cancer doesn’t discriminate. The world has seen a rise in the number of young people being diagnosed with bowel cancer and I just happen to one of the fortunate ones. February marks a number of important dates for people including Valentine’s Day and the end of the summer holidays for school students – I’m a school teacher so it’s the end of my free time as well. However, to me it was 12 months since I was cut open to have a piece of my right lung removed in the hope of curing me. For someone who has never broken a bone or required more than a check-up, I have spent more time in hospital than my ageing grandparents.

I’ve dealt with side effects from chemotherapy and surgery such as nausea, stomach complaints, taste changes, numbness in fingers and toes, scarring, weakness as well as a nasty infection from the port insertion. And yet I am lucky. Throughout the whole experience, I have had incredible support from a range of people. I continue to work full-time at school. I still get to spend plenty of time with my wife and young children. Our backyard was transformed through the generosity of the community while I was recovering from my liver surgery. I have an amazing medical team whose patience and compassion are my inspiration. But most importantly, I have hope. Hope, that I will be the last generation to die of cancer as medical science continues to make amazing breakthroughs made possible by the generosity of everyday people. This is why I support the Relay for Life because for me personally, it may mean the chance of life. Everyone deserves a chance at that.

OUR years ago, Uniting AgeWell clients Yvonne and Claude D’Sylva thought they would have to leave their home of 45 years and move into residential aged care. Claude’s Parkinson’s made it difficult for him to get around without a walker or shower himself, which made day-to-day living at home a challenge. However, Uniting AgeWell’s home care services turned the couple’s lives around and they have now put plans to move into aged care on the back burner. The couple now receives personal care, cleaning, gardening and transport, removing some of the burdens of living at home and allowing them to focus on the things they enjoy. Yvonne is also undertaking her own major project – with support from Uniting AgeWell she is cleaning out all the low cupboards in their home. “Getting to the underneath cupboards used to be easy but I can’t get down there anymore and they are so messy,” she said. “Uniting AgeWell sends me a carer once a month to help me go through and clean them out.” Home care services have made life comfortable for Yvonne and Claude. It means the 82-year-olds can enjoy each other’s company and make the most of the time they have together. “There’s no tension about having to get things done because it’s all looked after,” Yvonne said.

EXT month Bendigo’s winemakers will be celebrating the end of harvest with the Strategem Bendigo Winemakers Festival. Rosalind Park in the centre of Bendigo will be transformed into the city’s biggest alfresco wine garden with local Bendigo wine, regional food stalls and live music. Bendigo Winegrowers Association president Wes Vine invites everyone to join in the celebration with the local winemakers. “The festival will have something for everyone – Bendigo region wine, regional food stalls and live music from The Deans and The Funk Junkies,” Wes said.

“The festival is a great opportunity for people to come to one place and try the wines of the region from 18 wineries. “With more than 60 different wines to try people can get a taste of award-winning rosé, sweet sparkling wines, white wines and full-bodied reds. Festival-goers can join a wine and food masterclass with local restaurant owner Finn Vedelsby for a journey across the region with wine and food pairing. “Where possible, the food is all regionally produced,” Wes said. Lawn games and plenty of competitions will round out the perfect day.

“We encourage people to bring their picnic rug and find a spot on the grass to enjoy the wines and the relaxing park setting of Rosalind Park. “This year people also have the option to purchase a private marquee for their group with a guaranteed perfect spot to take in the festival atmosphere in style.” Tasting tickets are $45 when prebooked from www. bendigotourism.com and include entry, a souvenir wine glass and wine tastings. Strategem Bendigo Winemakers Festival, Saturday April 6 in Rosalind Park 11am to 4pm.

ETTING in a garden is not just about digging and working hard, for some it’s about simply enjoying everything a garden has to offer. And with autumn finally here, now is the ideal time to get back out in the garden both for your garden’s benefit and your own wellbeing. MacDonald’s Nursery in Retreat Road and Garden Releaf Australia have long recognised the link between gardening and positive mental and physical health and will be encouraging you to get busy on Garden Releaf Day with a range of activities on March 23/24. Nurseries throughout Australia celebrate the day with fun activities, loads of in store colour, specials and fundraising for Beyond Blue. “We will be having balloon giveaways and mini gardener sessions throughout the weekend

encouraging kids to get into gardening by potting their own flower or vegetable seedlings which they can take home to nurture, with the only cost being a gold coin donation,” nurseryman Lee Macdonald said.” “We’ll also be having informative, tree planting demonstrations, to get help get your plants off to healthy start.” Nationally the Releaf Day has raised in excess of $225,000 which has provided free and immediate mental health support to more than 4700 people suffering anxiety and depression. “Since the first Releaf Day in 2015 we’ve matched all donations dollar for dollar, and together contributed more than $7500 towards this most worthwhile cause,” Lee said. Fifteen litres a minute – guaranteed C

ENTRE State Drilling have been drilling water bores in the Bendigo area for more than 30 years. Utilising local knowledge based on this extensive experience Centre State Drilling’s Dan McMahon, is able to offer all his clients first-hand knowledge of expected outcomes, when drilling a bore throughout the region. Dans’ local knowledge, bore database search reports and his highly regarded water divining skills give his clients the advantage when sinking a bore. This along with prompt reliable service, honest down-to-earth advice along with high standard construction are some of the reasons that Centre State Drilling has the best reputation, reviews and results in the industry. Dan offers free on-site consultation, water

For all your gardening needs

UTUMN has finally arrived, providing long-awaited relief for residents and gardens alike and the opportunity to get on top of all those gardening jobs before the onset of winter according to Paul from Epsom Complete Garden Care. Paul will take care of all your garden tasks, big or small as well as regular garden maintenance. As a qualified and experienced arborist he can also advise you on what trees to grow and how to maintain and prune them for best results. He not only listens to what you want for your garden but also offers professional advice as to what plants would be suitable, regardless of season. “Gardening is such a personal thing,

I listen to all my clients, so we can work together,” he said. Paul can take care of all your regular garden maintenance including lawn mowing, weeding, planting and pruning, even rubbish removal, as well as those special one-off jobs. And with his stump grinder always at the ready, he is also an expert stump remover. Paul says the more consistently you work on your garden, the less overwhelming the jobs. He charges reasonable rates and is always happy to come out and provide a quote. So to get your garden into shape for autumn, phone Paul from Epsom Complete Garden Care on 0418 355 898.

The right price and good advice

AGGERTS Discount Carpets & Vinyls massive “Salebration” sale was a huge success according to Trevor Taggert who said business in the lead up to the Christmas New Year period had been fantastic. The genuine 30 year sale with never to be repeated prices, starting from just $15 a square metre is now winding down but there are still plenty of bargains to be had throughout their Sandhurst Road store. And remember if it’s not in stock they can order it in for you from their trusted suppliers. Bulk carpet, sheet vinyl, vinyl planks and carpet and rubber tiles it’s all here along with good old-fashioned service, being the secret to Taggerts’ longevity and success which first started from a farm shed in Woodvale. The other aspect to this highly reputable business is the genuine advice Trevor and

Dora give all their customers. They can even advise customers about the most cost effective, flooring solutions for their particular needs. “The cheapest carpet is not always the best, not if it’s going wear out in a couple of years,” Trevor said. “We also stock over 700 plus rolls of stock and give advice regarding colour and décor. “Some builders and homeowners aren’t sure what to choose while other customers are absent, so based on their input we help them select the right floor coverings.” And better still for regular customers, Taggerts always have a clearance sale under way on various discontinued or discount lines. Taggerts Discount Carpets & Vinyls, open Monday to Friday and late Saturday mornings at 18 to 20 Sandhurst Road, California Gully, phone 5446 1416. For an easy move CLEAVE Removals make moving easy, and being based in Bendigo they offer a comprehensive range of removalist services. From prepacking to short or long term storage solutions, house cleaning, pet relocation, vehicle transport and more. Manager Phillip Bulger and his team offer an unsurpassed level of personal service, be it a single item to the largest of house lots, across town or county. And with an easy to submit online quoting service, Cleave Removals can provide a prompt and competitive quote, usually within 24 hours, meaning organising your next move has never been easier, local or interstate. Cleave’s experienced removalists also service the Castlemaine, Echuca, Horsham and Ballarat regions providing a second-to none service. “Our fully trained staff are capable

of handling your furniture and effects with a minimum of fuss, using specialised handling equipment together with quality clean packaging materials,” Phillip said. Cleave Removals can also accommodate your storage needs whether you require short term or long term storage with no consignment too big or too small. “At a self-storage facility you hire a shed and pay for the entire space whether you use it or not, but at Cleaves you only pay for the space your furniture takes up.” They can also offer transit and storage insurance as authorised representatives of Cowden (Vic) Pty Ltd Insurance Brokers, meaning your move will comply with AFRA’s strict Code of Conduct guidelines. To find out more or to obtain a quote phone Cleave Removals on 5448 5060 or visit their website at www.cleaveremovals.com.au

Safe and secure KANGAROO Flat Storage may have the ideal storage solution if you’re between moves or just need extra short or long-term storage. And with Cate and John Keane recently opening their new generation of storage units at their Collins Street facility the timing has never been better. “Since we first opened in July 2016 the community have supported us overwhelmingly, so much so we have been able to increase our unit range of quality storage units to meet demand,” Cate said. “In both build stages it has been important to use local tradespeople throughout, it’s important to us to shop local.” “Our tenants helped to guide us as they continue to give productive feedback, much of this we have implemented in our new units.” Stage 2 included smaller 2x3 metre units and extralong, seven metre deep units to accommodate people who

need to keep tools and vehicles safe and secure, and still have room for a shelf and additional storage.” In a time when security is paramount all units feature individual alarms, supported with off-site monitoring, unique coded keypad entry, continual pest eradication programs as well as an on-site office, selling boxes, tape and other packing materials. “We even have an on-site bathroom facilities and vending machine for those busy moving days, so you don’t get caught out,” Cate said. “So don’t hesitate to call and secure your unit to store your precious items safely away from prying eyes.” As before, customer service is an integral part at Kangaroo Flat Storage’s on-going success, so call Cate to arrange an inspection and discuss your storage needs. A registered domestic animal business may use its Council business registration number as an alternative. A penalty of up to 5 penalty units (around $600) can be issued by Authorised Officers of Council, RSPCA or Department of Primary Industries for advertising the sale of a cat or dog without a microchip. ADVERTISING THE SALE OF LIVESTOCK IN VICTORIA

Under Victorian law, individuals must have a Property Identification Code (PIC) for properties on which they graze or keep the following livestock: Cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, alpaca, llamas, deer, horses or more than 50 poultry. It is now a legal requirement to include the PIC of the property at which the livestock are kept in any advertisement for the sale (including giving away or bartering) of those livestock. An alternative is to include the name and contact details of the livestock sales agent (if applicable) in the advertisement. It will be an offence for the vendor to fail to include the PIC in the advertisement, or for the media organisation who publishes the advertisement if it does not contain the required PIC.

Tobin signs for Spirit

BENDIGO Spirit’s star import from the 2018/19 Women’s National Basketball League season, Becca Tobin, has signed on for another stint with the Bendigo side. Tobin was impressive in her first WNBL season, finishing in the league’s top 10 for blocks, steals, rebounds and field goal percentage, having 14 games in double figures and seven double doubles. She was also featured in the WNBL team of the week four times, and finished third in the running for defensive player of the year, and seventh in voting for league MVP. Head Coach Tracy York was direct when asked about re-signing Tobin, describing her as a standout in the WNBL. “She moves like a guard, works hard at both ends of the floor and can score at will. Most importantly, Becca is a great person and

has clearly embraced the Bendigo community, lifestyle and vision for success.” Tobin is playing in Germany and will return to Bendigo in the coming weeks to play in the NBL1 competition with the Braves and remains full of praise for Bendigo. “I’m in love with Bendigo. The community has been so supportive and accepting of me and the home crowds really do love the Spirit. I can’t wait to get back to Bendigo and settle in for the next 10 months or so,” she said. With free agency in full swing for the WNBL, the focus on signing talent is now ramping up for coach York and Tobin is understood to be the first of many expected signings for the Spirit in the next month. son, the club had as many as 40 participants aged between four and eight years of age. Only half of these have been retained after Christmas because a Mountain Biking Australia trial licence lapses after three months of participation. The licence is necessary to upkeep club facilities and tracks, as well as to insure rid-

ers against any injuries they may sustain. Mountain Biking Australia has granted a special exemption to allow some of these old club members to return to the club for the final race of the season and collect a participation medal, granted they sign a waiver. Races have been held since October on every second Tues-

Athletes shine

Mountain bike youngsters in focus THE Bendigo Mountain Bike Club’s 2018-19 summer series wraps up on Tuesday with the final race of the season at Quarry Hill Golf Course. The evening will have a special focus on the club’s youngest members and hopes to celebrate its junior participants through the Dirt Squirt Showcase. At the beginning of the sea-

day night, with points accumulated based on final placings. Overall prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place and medals will be presented for all juniors that come along. Registration will be from 5.30pm, with the first race at 6pm and it is free to enter for junior riders.

THE Bendigo Harriers marked a winning double in the Flack Advisory Bendigo Region’s classics run at last weekend’s Bendigo International Madison athletics-cycling carnival. Talented teenagers Harrison Boyd and Daniel Baldwin led the Harriers charge at the Tom Flood Sports Centre. A great run by the Harriers kicked off in Saturday night’s Richard Kitt Memorial 1500 metres. Although he was one of the youngest in the field, Harrison Boyd showed plenty of “race smarts” to reel in clubmate Anne Buckley and South Bendigo’s Leigh Browell in the last 150 metres of the four-lap contest. Boyd started off the 72-second mark and ran strongly to win the classic in 5.03 minutes. Buckley fought on to be runner-up in a time of 5.43 from the 34-second mark, as Browell ran to the line in 5.18 from the one-minute handicap. Fastest time honours went to University’s Andy Buchanan. The dual national 10 kilometre cross-country champion raced from the backmark of 2.38 and charged to the finish in 3.58 to be ninth in a field of 21 athletes.

A memorable campaign for Baldwin kicked off as he won the first of the Hilson Buildersbacked Sally Conroy Memorial 200 metre heats on Saturday afternoon. Baldwin raced off the backmark of five metres and won in 23.75 seconds. On Sunday, the 16-year-old went faster as he charged past all opponents on the home straight to take the title in a time of 23.54. Runner-up was Harriers’ clubmate Luke Matthews in 23.65 from the 10m mark. South Bendigo youngster Allie Guillou raced from 36m and was third in 23.97, ahead of Eaglehawk’s Kenan Seebah (8m) in 24.00 and Gabrielle Rusbridge (31m) in 24.02, and Bendigo Harriers’ Geoff Jordan in 24.55 from the 29m mark. Athletics action is at the Latrobe University Bendigo complex from 1.30pm on Saturday. A highlight of the seventh round of non-Shield competition will be the 4 x 1500m relay championship. The afternoon program includes sprint hurdles, walks, 100m, 400m, 3000m or 5000m, steeplechase, shot put, javelin, long jump and pole vault.

Finals bound

FOR Strathdale Maristians, the equation going into the final round of Bendigo District Cricket Association first grade matches was simple… Win, and make it an outright. Nothing else would give the David Bakes coached Suns any chance of taking part in the competition’s finals. And thanks to one of the most dominant all round performances in recent memory, the Suns live to fight another day after Cam Taylor’s superb efforts with both bat and ball led his beloved team into yet another finals campaign. Taylor was simply brilliant in every aspect of the game over the past two Saturdays. He scored a swashbuckling 104 in the Suns’ first innings to underline his side’s intentions to seek a win at all costs, before capturing 4-57 to help leave White

Hills floundering at the end of the first day of a tense final round of BDCA action. Forced to follow on, White Hills managed to accumulate 211 runs, with Taylor taking 8-74 from a marathon 28.2 overs. Not content with these extraordinary match figures, Taylor then reached 23 not out as the Suns completed their devastation of their White Hills opponents, making 3/72 at almost a run a ball to sneak into the finals full of momentum and confidence. Their opponents this weekend are competition front runners Golden Square, perhaps the most consistent side of the season. The Bulldogs have great depth in both their batting and bowling attacks, and will enter this weekend’s semi-final quietly confident of their ability to qualify for yet another grand final.

Crash fails to stop win

TAYLOR MADE: Cam Taylor in action earlier this season. In the other semi-final, Eaglehawk hosts the competition’s surprise packet for the season Huntly North Epsom. Both sides take winning form into the semi-final, with Eaglehawk looking to

use the home ground advantage to secure its spot in the competition’s grand final. Action starts in both semi- finals at 12pm, tomorrow and continues Sunday.

BFNL clubs look to the future SEVERAL clubs from the Bendigo Football Netball League will not field netball teams in all levels of competition as they continue to face challenges in attracting sufficient players. The BFNL board met last week to discuss the ability of BFNL clubs to field all netball teams in 2019 as well as a club driven proposal to consider making a structural change to match day start times for 2019. As the 2019 season approaches, the BFNL this week confirmed

sport@bendigopublishing.com

Kyneton will re-introduce an A Grade netball team, however, will not field a 17 and under netball team. Elsewhere Castlemaine will not field an A Grade netball team, and Maryborough will not provide an A Reserve netball team. Based on consultation with all clubs resulting in overwhelming support, the BFNL will support a club driven proposal to move the 17 and under netball start time on single court venue times into an A Reserve curtain raiser.

BFNL league manager Cameron Tomlins said whilst sharing disappointment in the outcome, the board acknowledged the challenges faced by all clubs, particularly those affected by these challenges. “We understand and share the disappointment that everyone feels in this situation, the BFNL is committed to work with Castlemaine, Maryborough and Kyneton to achieve a full complement of netball teams in 2020.”

WORLD champions Sam Welsford and Kelland O’Brien won a crash-marred Bendigo International Madison last weekend after dominating the race throughout. Fresh from world championship glory in Poland, the Tim Decker coached pair never looked to be in trouble after the 200-lap classic was shortened due to a shocking crash just over 60 laps into the race. Up to a dozen riders withdrew after the crash, with a fleet of ambulances called to the Tom Flood Sports Centre to ferry injured riders, with one spectator who was struck by a rider who catapulted over the fence taken to hospital after the high speed crash. The spectator, 70-year old Ross Forster from Maryborough, was later taken to hospital in Melbourne suffering facial fractures and other head injuries. The race was delayed for up to an hour, and after much deliberation, officials assembled the remaining field for a 60-lap sprint finish that played into the pairing of O’Brien and Welsford’s hands. Yesterday, the Bendigo International Madison committee released a statement extending its thanks to everyone

who attended the carnival over the weekend, and said a successful carnival affected by a mid-race crash will no doubt be a talking point for some time. “The Bendigo International Madison committee extends sincere thoughts to all affected by the crash. Some significant injuries were sustained. We wish all a speedy recovery. “We would also like to thank first aid, commissaires, volunteers and spectators who assisted. The prompt, calm and efficient manner in which the incident was handled certainly helped the situation.” Cycling Victoria has announced it will investigate the crash, and said its thoughts are with those who were injured and their families. “We wish them a speedy recovery and hope to see them back out on to the track. We, along with the race promoter will be offering our support directly to them. We would like to offer counselling to anyone that attended the race last night and found themselves affected by the accident.” “No one goes to race or watch a race and expects to get hurt. We wish everyone affected a speedy recovery.”

THE biggest weekend of local bowls action continues today with the second of four consecutive days of grand finals to be played across the city. The Bendigo Bowls Division pennant grand finals kicked off yesterday, with midweek pennant grand finals played in divisions two, three, four and five.

Bendigo Bowling Club hosted division two’s decider between Woodbury and White Hills, while Strathfieldsaye and Harcourt locked horns in division four. In division two, it was Woodbury who took out the grand final, while in division four, Harcourt emerged comfortable victors over Strathfieldsaye.

The division one grand final will be contested today between Eaglehawk and Bendigo East at Kangaroo Flat. The action reaches its peak on Sunday with the BBD weekend pennant grand final between two of the competition’s most dominant clubs and traditional rivals Bendigo East and Eaglehawk.
