Solar farm plans By PETER KENNEDY

A GOLD mining company has announced plans to build a $100 million solar farm at the Woodvale evaporation ponds complex, north of Bendigo. GBM Gold Ltd wants to create a 60 megawatt solar power plant as it looks to re-purpose the ponds, which have been home to groundwater pumped as part of gold mining activities beneath Bendigo and associated dewatering processes. GBM Gold Limited chief executive officer John Harrison said the large-scale project, which still requires approval, would improve Bendigo’s resilience to electricity grid problems, and was also in line with state and local government renewable energy policies. “This project could provide significant long-term environmental and economic benefits to the Bendigo community with an improvement in energy security and an estimated 100 jobs created during construction.” He said the ponds enjoyed excellent sun exposure, were not readily visible to adjacent houses, and were also located close to where power is needed. “We’ve been looking for an alternate use for some

time, and we have now found that alternate use.” Mr Harrison said the company wanted to transform the Woodvale ponds into a 60MW solar power plant, which will be directed straight into Bendigo. “It is a very exciting project, not just for us, but for the people of Bendigo and it will supply, on a good day, most of the power that Bendigo needs.” The company remains in discussions with potential joint venture partners, and Mr Harrison said he was optimistic a deal would be made. “In the current climate there is a lot of money for renewables and we are very confident the money will come for this project.” The project would be connected to the sub-transmission network in Bendigo via a 66kV power line, and would tie into a new sub-station to be built on some of the rehabilitated 174 hectare pond complex at Woodvale. The ponds have been redundant since 2016, when groundwater was instead processed through a water treatment plant. Under GDBM Gold’s proposal, one of the ponds will be retained and would operate as a floating solar facility that also contains rainfall on the site. Continued Page 5 Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Upgrades on offer BENDIGO residents could be eligible to join a program to save on energy costs and create a more comfortable home. The Energy Savvy Upgrades program offers heavily subsidised energy assessments and upgrades to the house and major fixed appliances to householders who are on a low income, are unemployed, have a long-term medical condition or disability or are caring for someone in these or similar circumstances. The program is open to home owners as well as renters and landlords. Upgrades such as insulation, draught proofing, heating and cooling, hot water, window shading and lighting are included in the program. Householders or landlords pay $100 for the assessment (normally worth around $450) and 25 per cent of the total cost of upgrades. The program will subsidise 75 per cent of the cost of upgrades up to a maximum of $4500 (total value $6000). Finance is available, with lowinterest personal loans available for qualifying participants. Residents can find out if they are eligible to participate by contacting Draught Busters

on 1300 130 364. This program is funded by the state government, supported by the City of Greater Bendigo, and is delivered by Draught Busters. CONSTRUCTION activity across Australia during the three months to March 31 dropped by 1.9 per cent compared with the end of 2018 – but Master Builders Australia believes there are signs of growth in some important areas. Master Builders Australia chief economist Shane Garrett said during the March quarter, civil construction activity dropped back by 3.9 per cent although commercial building saw growth of 3.6 per cent to reach a new all-time high. “The re-election of the Morrison government will boost confidence in our industry and is being welcomed by the hundreds of thousands of small firms active in building and construction,” Mr Garrett said. “Unfortunately, the decline in civil construction activity during the opening quarter of this year will not be a surprise to the industry. The time taken for government infrastructure announcements to translate into real, visible activity on the ground is often far too long.” Mr Garrett said population

HAVE YOU HAD YOUR EYES TESTED RECENTLY? Many common eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and age related macular degeneration often have no warning signs. Early detection is paramount!

Around 99% of the world’s population will first need reading glasses between the ages of 40 and 50. As we age, the lenses in our eyes slowly lose the ability to focus. This means that the vast majority of us will need some form of vision correction in our adult lives.

DOWNTURN: Construction activity slowed. and employment increases remain robust in most parts of Australia, creating the need for more offices, schools, hospitals and shops. “Today’s figures indicate that this demand is indeed being matched by the building industry,” he said. Not surprisingly, residential building moved backwards by 2.3 per cent during the March quarter, with fewer new homes being built due to the negative impact of micro factors including the slow motion credit environment post-Royal Commission. “We look forward to the quick implementation of the government’s election pledges around First Home Buyer home loans and support for small businesses,” Mr Garrett said. THE chances of a cut to the official cash rate have firmed, with the Reserve Bank hinting at a future

change as early as next month. Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe this week told a business luncheon that the RBA board had discussed a scenario in which there was no further improvement in the labour market and the unemployment rate remained around the five per cent mark. “In this scenario, we judged that inflation was likely to remain low relative to the target and that a decrease in the cash rate would likely be appropriate,” he said. “A lower cash rate would support employment growth and bring forward the time when inflation is consistent with the target. Given this assessment, at our meeting in two weeks’ time, we will consider the case for lower interest rates.” The RBA board’s decision on monetary policy will be released on Tuesday, June 4.

Qantas plans more flights Lisa Chesters calls for federal funding

By PETER KENNEDY

FEDERAL Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters has called for federal funding to expand the Bendigo Airport terminal in the wake of yesterday’s announcement by Qantas that it will expand flight services between Bendigo and Sydney. From August 17, an additional flight will operate on Saturday evenings from Sydney to Bendigo, and an additional flight will operate on Sunday mornings from Bendigo to Sydney – offering customers in Bendigo a same day return flight every day of the week.

“This is a great announcement for our region,” Ms Chesters said. “It’s a sign of how successful the move to start Qantas flights between Bendigo and Sydney has been and demonstrates that demand has continued to grow.” QantasLink chief executive officer John Gissing said the response to the new direct Bendigo service has been fantastic – from residents as well as business and leisure travellers from Sydney and Bendigo. “After less than two months of

operation, in response to the strong uptake, we’re pleased to be adding more flights to the schedule to offer our customers more choice. “We’re pleased to see the local community has really supported the launch of the new route and we’ll continue to work with tourism and industry leaders to promote the flights to travellers from across Australia and around the world.” City of Greater Bendigo chief executive officer Craig Niemann said the announcement was another excit-

ing step for the city’s partnership with Qantas. “Our region’s positive response and strong passenger numbers have shown there is a need for additional flights, so to be able to influence the delivery of a true seven-day-a-week service is fantastic. “The city thanks the community and wider region for its ongoing support, as well as the Qantas team for its continued collaboration and delivery of an outstanding service.” Ms Chesters said the announce-

ment was a further indication of why the Bendigo Airport terminal needed to be upgraded, as the current facility will not cope with future growth. Bendigo Airport’s existing terminal building has limited capacity and is unable to provide the expected customer experience or mandated aviation security environment for aircraft with more than 30 passengers. “This project would be a good boost for the Bendigo economy and local infrastructure.” The Labor party promised $4.4 million to further upgrade the Bendigo Airport terminal and precinct during the federal election campaign.

VOTERS in the electorate of Bendigo have given Labor’s Lisa Chesters a further three years as their representative in the Australian parliament. Ms Chesters secured a resounding victory for her party in the election, but will remain on the opposition benches after the Scott Morrison-led coalition surprised most commentators by inching out the ALP to win a third term in office. Ms Chesters now sits on an impressive 9.02 per cent margin, having achieved approximately 17,000 more votes than Liberal Sam Gayed on a two-candidate preferred basis. It’s the largest margin Ms Chesters has enjoyed since she won the seat in 2013 upon the retirement of the veteran Steve Gibbons. Since her pre-selection in 2013, Ms Chesters has seen off Greg Bickley, Megan Purcell and now Mr Gayed. She achieved a two-candidate preferred swing of just over 5.15 per cent at this election, and in some southern booths around the Macedon Ranges she received double-digit swings of up to 16 per cent in a resounding endorsement. Ms Chesters received 41,345 first preferences from voters, Mr Gayed 29,959, while Greens candidate Robert Holian received 9948 votes, or about 10.6 per cent of the primary votes allocated. Minor party candidates split more than 13 per cent of the vote, with Pauline Hanson’s One Nation candidate Vaughan Williams receiving 5693 or 6.07 per cent. Mr Gayed’s best results came from booths at Axedale, Elmore and Junortoun where he outpolled his rival candidates. Almost 39,000 voters took advantage of early voting centres at Bendigo, Golden Square and Castlemaine to vote prior to Saturday. The informal vote of 3.75 per cent was down on the previous election.

City launches Night Shelters

By NICHOLAS NAKOS

WINTER is the time to rug up, get your biggest jacket out and stay warm by the fire. For those sleeping rough in Bendigo though, winter can spell disaster. Wet weather and cold conditions only compound homelessness for those in our city, but a new initiative, Bendigo Winter Night Shelters, is hoping to change that. From Eaglehawk to Strathfieldsaye, Junortoun and Flora Hill, the shelters are facilitated by the Salvation Army, with its partners Bendigo Baptist Community Care and Haven Home Safe. As many as 900 beds will be avail-

able across 14 sites in the region, in the first of what organisers are hoping will be many more years of the program. “This is extremely important and it’s a great opportunity to support those that need it at this time of the year,” Bendigo Baptist Community Care director Matthew Parkinson said. The shelters will only be taking a small number of people each night, as they want to ensure the program is of high quality. “We are offering food, shelter and dignity to people, a well as pointing them in the right direction during the day to access the services they need,” Mr Parkinson said.

Winter Night Shelters have proven successful in Melbourne, and now it’s Bendigo’s turn to do its bit, according to project coordinator Lachlan Weir. As well as organising guests, Mr Weir is in charge of rostering volunteers across the 14 sites. With the shelters opening in just days, an influx of volunteers and getting them prepared for their first shifts is a welcome challenge. “We are expecting high demand for our beds and our guests will need to meet our criteria for risk assessment to use our facilities,” Mr Weir said. Guests are referred to the program via the Salvation Army, Bendigo

BENDIGO Theatre Company is looking to discover the best local talent at auditions for their major production, Wicked: The Musical. There are 10 shows lined up during October and November, with a production team of more than 30 set to make the show come alive. The creative team will cast 30 to 40 actors, singers and dancers, with many cameo roles and costume changes to suit every performer. Individual vocal auditions will be held on Friday, May 31 and Sunday, June 2, with separate dance auditions and call backs if required. Director Paul Watson lauded the incredible creative team, including people who have worked on the show professionally before. “It is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s only going to be in Bendigo once, and that time is now,” Mr Watson said. Wicked is a modern classic about the untold story of the witches of the Wizard of Oz, Glinda and Elphaba. To audition, you must be 16 years or older. The auditions take place at the Bendigo Theatre Arts Shed, 15-17 Allingham Street, Golden Square. You must book a spot for your audition at bendigotheatrecompany.org

3From Page 1 “When it rains very heavily on this site, that pod can end up with a metre of water in it, so we keep all rainwater on site, and the rest of the ponds, the other 100 hectares will be standard solar.” A rehabilitation plan prepared for the site would see one of the ponds converted to a deep fill zone, with contaminants from other ponds to be stockpiled to a repository in its floor. Mr Harrison said the 60MW solar farm could provide enough renewable energy to power the majority of homes in Bendigo, and he hoped the project would be up and running within two years. It’s understood if the project gains approval, it would be the first time redundant ponds have been used for solar, and would include the biggest floating solar plant in Victoria as part of the complex. Mr Harrison said the company was in close contact with residents, and he was confident the proposal can gain approval, describing the project as “robust”. GBM Gold Limited has been under financial strain and has also encountered problems with the state’s mining regulator over claims arsenic-laden dust was not being contained on the site during hot and dry weather earlier this year.

Accolades for play space EAGLEHAWK Regional Playspace has won a Parks and Leisure Play Space award of excellence for a plays space valued at more than $500,000. The $1.3 million initiative was opened in September, with the award recognising the creativity, planning and community collaboration that went into developing and constructing the unique play space. City of Greater Bendigo Director of Presentation and Assets Debbie Wood said the city was delighted the PLA have acknowledged the site. “It’s a special play space with equipment that has never been seen in Greater Bendigo before, and that was designed by our staff to cater to children of all ages and abilities,” Ms Wood said. When viewed from above, the site is shaped like a giant eagle. “The play space also features a wonderful butterfly themed junior play area, which celebrates the life of the late baby Zayden Veal Whitting, whose family and friends helped raise funds towards the new space,” Ms Wood said. The Eaglehawk Playspace is located at Napier Street, Eaglehawk.

Guide Dogs settle in GUIDE Dogs Victoria has celebrated the official opening of new premises in Bendigo. The organisation has settled into its Wills Street site and yesterday thanked the City of Greater Bendigo for its support through the community grants program, which helped establish the Bendigo base. Guide Dogs Victoria provides those living with low vision or blindness more convenient access to services, and the decision to expand into Bendigo comes as a result of strong demand during the past two years for guide dog services in the area. GDV’s range of tailored offerings will now be delivered through the convenience and care of the Bendigo office, which will be fully supported by GDV’s main office in Kew. GDV says its new site will enable it to be even more responsive to clients’ needs with

staff equipped with local knowledge improving outcomes for local residents. One of the key features of the office will be the inclusion of a Vision Shop which will offer assistive equipment and technology for clients to purchase. As part of yesterday’s opening ceremonies, Greater Bendigo mayor Margaret O’Rourke was called on to cut a celebratory cake. There were also tours of the new premises and Cr O’Rourke took part in a blindfolded walk, wearing glasses to simulate low vision in an experience she later described as “very confronting’’. Guide Dogs Victoria offers a suite of programs including Children/Youth Services, Adult Services, Acquired Brain Injury Mobility Services and Occupational Therapy Services. The organisation receives less than 10 per cent of gov-

City shows gratitude to volunteers MORE than 500 volunteers have been acknowledged by the City of Greater Bendigo at a special morning tea held at Ulumbarra Theatre yesterday. The city’s volunteers dedicate approximately 2500 hours of service per month, or around 30,000 hours per year to help deliver important services. Mayor Margaret O’Rourke said the city wanted to thank the volunteers for their valuable contribution to a range of services that benefit the community. “We are so fortunate to have such a large group of passionate volunteers, many of whom have been with us for many years,”

Cr O’Rourke said. “We couldn’t do all that we do without the help of our volunteers who give their time to help with a range of city activities, including major events and festivals and assisting tourists to experience the best of Greater Bendigo. “Volunteering helps create a stronger, more connected and more resilient community. “We always welcome new volunteers, so if you have been thinking about putting your hand up to help, there are plenty of fantastic opportunities available with the City of Greater Bendigo.”

LAST ORDERS: Ken Arnold is seeking photographs to complete his book. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Pub pics please DURING the course of an exhibition of old pubs held at the Post Office Gallery in late 2017 (Taverns to Temperance: Pubs of Bendigo) several people mentioned to Ken Arnold the need for a book on local hotels. Given Mr Arnold’s keen interest in local history and the prolific number of books he has published, Bendigo A History in Bottles and Stoneware 1852 - 1930 is one such example, it seemed logical that Mr Arnold would pursue the subject of pubs.

Mr Arnold had in fact already been working on and off on just such a book for more than 40 years. “I have amassed hundreds of photographs along with compiling a list of the publicans for the whole of the area of the City of Greater Bendigo, which includes Lockwood around to Marong onto Raywood, Huntly, Elmore, Costerfield, Heathcote, Redesdale and in between,” Mr Arnold said. Although he stopped his research on publicans

from before 1900, many of the photographs he is seeking may be of pubs which existed since 1900. “At this point of time I am still looking for photographs for a lot of the hotels I have listed, last count this was over 600.” In short Mr Arnold would be keen to hear from any readers who may have a photo of an old pub which could be relevant to his research. You can phone Mr Arnold on 0422 564 852.

Artwork on show at LAI THERE is a common misconception that all indigenous art is dot art. But a current exhibition at the La Trobe Art Institute has been designed to dispel this notion of uniformity of style. Unbranded features 13 indigenous artists from various parts of Australia. Artworks have been drawn from Western Australia, the Northern Territory, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales. The artists are in various phases of their career, from emerging artists to community leaders. The exhibiting artists are Damien Shen, Dean Cross, Gunybi Ganambarr, Illiam Nargoodah, James Tylor, John Prince Siddon, Ngarralja Tommy May, Nogirra Marawili, Nyurpaya Kaika Burton, Patrina Munugurr, Sharyn Egan, Sonia Kurarra and Wukun Wanambi. Featured are a wide variety of sculpture, painting, video and photography. The concept of “unbranded” emerged from Glenn Iseger-Pilkington who, in his 2009 essay, said unbranded challenges the relevance of an “indigenous brand” or “aesthetic”, and refutes the notion that such a brand can somehow represent the experience of indigenous artists and indigenous people across Australia. One example of the diversity of indigenous art are the weapons and tool collection made by Kimberley artist Illiam Nargoodah. Unbranded is curated by Glenn Iseger-Pilkington and Travis Curtin, and will be at the LAI, 121 View Street, Bendigo until June 22. For inquiries go to lai@latrobe. edu.au

THE state government will create an Early Parenting Centre in Bendigo as one of 10 centres to be established across the state. Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said new parents would have better access to the support families need, during a visit to Lightning Reef Early Learning Centre on Tuesday. The new facilities will become the first of their kind in regional Victoria, ensuring parents can get support no matter where they live. Ms Edwards said bringing a newborn home for the first time is one of the most precious moments for any parent – but for many families, it can be a stressful and challenging time.

Law firm honoured

A BENDIGO law firm has been recognised for outstanding service to the legal community by being named Boutique Law Firm of the Year at the Law Institute of Victoria’s 15th Annual Law Awards. With a focus on regional Victoria, Fortitude Legal has adopted innovative initiatives to overcome the geographical challenges thrown up by regional practice, not limited to distance and isolation. The Victorian Legal Awards is the most prestigious legal awards program in the state, celebrating the “best of the best” and publicly recognising those who demonstrate excellence in legal practice. Co-founder and principal lawyer Fleur Jackson, who was also a finalist in the 2018 awards, said having opened the doors at Fortitude Legal less than

12 months ago, bringing to life a vision to provide exceptional legal services to Bendigo and region, she was both humbled and thrilled to have our firm recognised in this way. In an additional acknowledgement, principal lawyer and co-founder Tom Burgoyne, was awarded the Rogers Legal Writing Award for his feature article Cyclist Beware published in the Law Institute Journal. His article journaled the legal fight of Drysdale man, Rory Wilson, to highlight an anomaly in the law and seek justice following a devastating cycling accident in 2014. Rory’s courage and Tom’s unwavering commitment were instrumental in having the law changed to benefit all cyclists injured in these circumstances.

Women in workforce inspire BENDIGO was an apt place to hold a seminar on women in the workforce. The seminar was introduced last week by mayor Margaret O’Rourke, who was proud to welcome senior women from industry and academia. Cr O’Rourke said that it is a reflection of our progressive city that not only is she representing women as mayor but there are about 15 women in significant leadership roles in our community, including state and federal politicians and Bendigo and Adelaide Bank managing director Marnie Baker. The seminar, which was held at the Bendigo Art Gallery, featured general manager Melanie McCarthy of Mandalay Resources Costerfield and human resources manager Nicole Sweeney also of Mandalay Resources Costerfield Operations. The guest speakers shared their inspiring, real-life stories of women shattering gendered roles in the traditionally male-dominated mining industry. Ms McCarthy and Ms Sweeney made the observation that significant changes in the mining industry needed to be made in areas such as mentoring, flexible work, parental leave and support and pay equity. There will be a series of seminars organised by senior workplace lawyer and human resources expert Rosa Raco of Gilchrist Connell.

Mayor Margaret O’Rourke said Greater Bendigo has a thriving food culture. Sweden’s International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism Dag Hartman was in Bendigo to help finalise the city’s bid, which commenced months ago. “We will be talking with

Dr Banyard is pleased the Visual Arts program at Bendigo is now growing and is part of the renewed Bachelor of Creative Arts. The Visual Arts program has some 70 students plus post-graduate and honours students. “The students consist of a mixed demographic. Some are straight from school,

DR Kylie Banyard, the new Visual Arts Coordinator and lecturer at La Trobe University is looking forward to rebuilding the Visual Arts program after what has been a fairly tumultuous time at the university. During the past few years staff have been replaced and the future direction of the course was unclear. But now the dust is settling and Dr Banyard says five new people have been employed as part of a re-investment in the Visual Arts program. Dr Banyard recently returned from Sydney where

others are mature aged and we have students from Melbourne as well,” she said. “There’s a buzz around the building now, a good vibe. We also have three technical staff so we’ve been able to re-vamp the art studios. They look fantastic.” With its interdisciplinary studio practice as well as art theory and history, Dr Banyard says the Visual Arts program is well rounded. “We’re aiming for a strong, viable and sustainable program which has industry experience such as internships at the NGV built into it.” – Dianne Dempsey

New product in digital win A DIGITAL platform created by a team of Bendigo technical experts is helping change the way farmers and livestock agents buy and sell stock. AgriNous enables stock agents and saleyards to digitally track the movement of sheep and lambs from the farm, all the way through to meat buyers and processors. Co-founder Joel Rockes said most stock agents and saleyards were using time-consuming paper-based processes to facilitate livestock transactions. “The traditional role of stock agents and saleyards is under increasing pressure, as producers and buyers are finding new ways to connect without them,” Mr Rockes said. “The progressive agents know they need to re-invent themselves and embrace new technologies and business models in order to remain relevant. “There are limited technologies currently in the market to meet this need, and that’s where AgriNous sees an opportunity.” AgriNous clients across Australia have transacted and handled in excess of 1.5 million sheep and lambs, and the team is now taking its solution to the cattle sector. Mr Rockes was named Inventor of the Year at the Bendigo Inventor Awards in September, which gave him and co-founders Marcus Pollock and Glenn Rea direct entry into La Trobe University’s Accelerator Program. The program rewards promising start-ups with up to $10,000, plus access to professional mentors, workspaces and workshops. Many ideas have been turned into successful businesses through

SHEER GENIUS: Joel Rockes. the program since it was launched in 2017, including a remote patientmonitoring device, golf training aid and dog conservation detection service. Head of Campus, Robert Stephenson, said it is rewarding to see the impact the program is having, particularly in regional areas such as Bendigo. “Many people can see a unique opportunity, but are unsure of how to develop their ideas into a viable business,” Mr Stephenson said. “This program helps budding entrepreneurs to connect with mentors, and take their start-up idea to the next stage – and we have seen some extremely successful businesses launched as a result.” Applications for the next round of La Trobe’s Accelerator Program close on Monday, June 3.

A strong voice I WRITE to say thank you to the people of the Bendigo electorate. I am truly honoured and proud to be re-elected as the Federal Member for Bendigo. The Bendigo electorate is a diverse electorate but that diversity is our strength. It is made up of a diverse collection of villages like Newstead and Malmsbury; towns like Woodend, Castlemaine, Heathcote and Kyneton; and the regional city of Bendigo. It is a vibrant region with a proud history and exciting future. I love our region and look forward to continuing to work hard for the many who work and live in the electorate. I will be a strong voice for you in our nation’s parliament. Lisa Chesters MP, Federal Member for Bendigo

A strategic plan?

I READ your front page headline (Bendigo Weekly, May 10), re a strategic plan for Bendigo and district. Don Erskine and Trevor Phillips give a view of thinking in the longer strategic manner. My comment is to highlight the first strategic component which surely must be a truck bypass connection from Marong to Huntly North. The second component is a large industrial site west of Marong. These two components mesh together, and then the others parts of this strategic plan will fall into place in the years and decades ahead. The third component seems to be ignored by all, and that is water security. It needs sound thinking because all the ideas cannot be achieved at once. Bendigo had 85,000 people and some good industry post-WWII through to around the year 2000. It was a good retirement town for retired farmers. Not so today. With 120,000 residents, Bendigo is expanding rapidly, with a far more diverse mix of people. At 85,000 people Bendigo stood still, enjoying its golden past. We need industry back in town and thus a large industrial site is vital. A ring road skirting the south AWN of the Whipstick Forest, north of Eaglehawk can be placed almost on TOR existing road reserves. of Huntly, connecting with Midland cum Northern Highway at the Kamarooka turn off. Look at a map of Victoria. This is almost the most direct link to Echuca and Riverina, via the Calder Highway. We are now thinking of the bigger picture of north-western and northern Victoria – Mildura, Swan Hill and Echuca and everything in between. Bendigo, as a quirk of history and geography, is probably the only major town in Victoria that has no bypass within 200km of Melbourne: And now with massive trucks, it’s a great problem for the development of Bendigo. Now, the Greater Bendigo City Council has its rate base virtually frozen by state government command, so it will require state government initiative; that is, VicRoads. So this requires design and approval of this bypass, and appropriate state infrastructure funding. VicRoads has built the Ravenswood roundabout, and is now constructing the new bridge over the Murray River at Echuca. These two must be connected, and the proposed bypass just north of Bendigo is the way to achieve it. The fact that this bypass is a vital part of northern Victoria’s road infrastructure, and is a major bonus to the Bendigo urban area, make it all the more a necessity. The last point is that the freeway must continue from Ravenswood to at least Huntly North. The present Calder Alternate Highway is on a designated three-chain road, so there are no problems there. Doug Harrison, Strathdale

Taken for a ride OUR city council seems to forget who they represent, and why. They ignore the issue of maintenance of the infrastructure called the Bendigo Creek. Is it not a piece of infrastructure necessary for Bendigo? Yet our council officers ignore the destruction of the creek. Especially the section from Laurel Street to Booth Street which is in a horrible collapsed condition. After some 10 years of raising this issue, council did reconstruct the section of Maple Street to Laurel Street at a cost of $900,000, but ignored the condition of the next section. In the short term, as the retaining timber structure has deteriorated to a largely ineffective state, the city is monitoring this section more frequently in relation to risk to

After 10 years of raising this issue I am disgusted. I received notice from the Executive Director Catchment, Waterways, Cities and Towns that: “The City of Greater Bendigo manages the area of Bendigo Creek that you refer to and is responsible for maintenance work in that part of the embankment.” It would appear not, in my opinion they show a lack of commitment and strategy in dealing with the creek infrastructure. It is not in their strategy, they would rather spend millions of dollars on new works, ignoring the ratepayers. Council officer admits the following: “It is recognised that the timber retaining wall on the south side of the creek between Laurel and Booth streets in particular, is now in a state where it no longer acts to retain the material behind it. The timber has not been removed but has reached a point where much of it has completely rotted away.” They are aware of the problem, but it is not their priority to do anything about the situation. further development of Bendigo and surrounds as suggested in the “Dream Big” article published in the Bendigo Weekly, May 10. In Canberra, manufacturing, warehousing, goods transport hubs and large furniture retailers were located in suburbs created for those purposes, leaving residential suburbs and associated roads, schools, universities, shopping centres and sports facilities for the use of residents. A good network of roads with clear signage goes hand in hand with this polycentric model and, as Bendigo develops into the future, it’s well worth taking action to prepare for such a comprehensive vision explained in the article. Cheryl and Allan Price, Epsom

Vision for Bendigo SINCE 2014 and after many years involvement in election matters, I have been writing letters to the City of Greater Bendigo Council and asking questions at council meetings on future planning for the greater city – particularly in relation to main connecting roads. At the February 15, 2017 council meeting I asked when would council take the lead and publish an overall concept plan for the City of Greater Bendigo and future population of 200,000 and actively press for the implementation of that plan? I was assured that

council “is on the same page”. I have seen no such plan. And, as I said to one of the directors fairly recently, “I see you are still putting Band-aids on (various) cancers” instead of tackling the whole problem. I congratulate Trevor Phillips and Don Erskine for the plan they have put forward and strongly support their ideas. But I fear that, like my earlier letters and questions, their plan will be welcomed, but deferred to be considered in due course and the comment made that it is beyond council’s range of responsibility. It is not. Putting such a plan into action must start from the council and council officers. So I appeal to the City of Greater Bendigo to embrace the Erskine/ Phillips’ plan and move to develop it and seek funding for implementation. Tony McDowell, Golden Square

Don’t look back

NOW that the dust has settled on last weekend’s federal election, it’s time to look forward to what comes next in the ever-changing world of politics. Victoria remains a stronghold for the Labor vote, but swings in Tasmania and especially Queensland last weekend helped deliver a narrow majority to the coalition government led by a rejuvenated Scott Morrison. There are many layers to some of the decisive issues of this campaign, and the ALP was punished by voters for appearing to not go deep enough with its suite of alternative policies and agendas. Coupled with a lingering concern at the now former opposition leader Bill Shorten’s ability to lead the nation that has been encapsulated in any number of preferred prime minister polls, this was enough to allow the coalition to sneak back in and retain power in a move few commentators and even fewer polls saw coming.

Editorial Comment For Bendigo, we continue a now well-entrenched practice of electing a sitting member that exists as part of the opposition, but this should not be a reason for the government to ignore our community. It’s not unusual, and indeed it’s something we have long shared with neighbouring Ballarat. While the coalition’s campaign for Bendigo was restricted by a lack of funds, support and perhaps experience, Bendigo still has every right to expect its fair share of government funding for a range of worthwhile projects, services, programs and opportunities. Next week’s delayed state budget should see funding announced for at least some of the tranche of projects unveiled and pledged by the govern-

ment during last year’s state election campaign. Some of these relate to infrastructure that will be need in the future, but needs to be provided for now. Some of it includes projects such as the new law courts complex, funds for Bendigo TAFE, funding for additional health services, funds for rail upgrades in the Bendigo-Kyneton corridor, money for local sporting clubs, and more money for local schools and kindergartens. As a city booming towards becoming a much bigger city of 200,000 in another three decades, we need to start a serious conversation with all levels of government about how best to plan and prepare for this inevitable circumstance – now. Recent articles in this paper have highlighted the enormity of the challenges that lay ahead of us, and how only a concerted and coordinated effort involving a whole of government will deliver an outcome that is satisfactory and the one we deserve.

pk with Peter Kennedy

An open letter to ScoMo

DEAR Prime Minister, Congratulations on your victory in last weekend’s federal election, I wish you and your government every success for the next three years. Your leadership will be judged by how successful our nation is when it comes to reining in debt, creating more jobs, delivering meaningful solutions to climate change and uniting Australians under a government that provides a better life for us all. Those successes must not be limited to those who voted for the Coalition, and I implore you to seize the opportunity you now have and work for the best interests of all Australians, in all electorates across our great country. Here in Bendigo, voters opted to re-elect the sitting member, Lisa Chesters, and she now enjoys an almost 10 per cent margin. This is perhaps a reflection of how hard Ms Chesters has worked, and of her support for a suite of local projects that frankly,

deserve your backing as well. Elections should never be about what’s in it for me, but they are about what’s in it for us, and for our nation. A government that says it wants to be inclusive needs to more broadly consider the needs of the electorate at large, including those electorates where it was not successful.

the blame for. But you also have the opportunity to make amends. Australian politics has reached a defining moment, and what comes next is crucial, not just for your prospects at the next election, but more importantly, for the rest of us for a much longer period of time. Climate change needs to be more closely consid-

“Australian politics has reached a defining moment, and what comes next is crucial” Australians want an end to the negativity and toxicity that have been a constant companion to politics in this country for much of the past decade. It has inhibited progress on a raft of issues that a lot of us care very deeply about, and it’s done nothing for the reputation or standards of politics in general. That so many Australians have become completely disengaged in our political system is something all politicians share

ered by your team, and I’m sure the new Member for Warringah will be a constant reminder to you of this. Your government has made a lot of concessions when it comes to the environment, but until now, most of them have been at the expense of the environment. This has to change. The NBN and the NDIS are both in need of repair. Too many Australians take their own lives each year, and we need practical

solutions that help stop this from occurring. The Newstart allowance needs to lift. Your government makes a lot of concessions for business, particularly small business, but to be more inclusive and considerate, you need to consider individuals struggling to survive on a measly $550 or so a fortnight, and who don’t have a voice. And if, as it now seems likely, you are unable to deliver tax cuts from July 1, then you should honour your word and backdate these much-discussed cuts accordingly. Over the next three years, you have a chance to make your own indelible mark on this country – we hope you use it wisely. And please, sort out the ridiculous standoff with the Victorian government about new roads that is denying Victorians billions of dollars in much-needed infrastructure funding. The rest of us are over it. It’s time you both just got on with it. twitter@peterkennedy23 pk@bendigopublishing.com

Women’s MTB ride

review

Upstairs versus downstairs

BY Jo Lythgo MARIA Tzaros had hardly been on a mountain bike when I encouraged her to try the Bendigo Mountain Bike Club’s new Women’s Mountain Bike Event as my partner. Maria had been getting into her road riding – we’d done plenty together – but getting on a mountain bike? “There’s no way,” she laughed. But with the promise that it was all in good fun and great for her road riding fitness (and a bit of arm twisting) she decided she was in. As the women’s coordinator for the club and only relatively new to the sport myself, I was surprised how few women rode a mountain bike. Sure I’d seen and ridden with a few ladies through club events but they were all either professional racers or of a much higher skill level than myself. Where were all the ladies just doing it for fun? An idea was thrown around a committee meeting and the Women’s MTB 3hr was conceived. This event was to be different from anything else the club had run before: not a race – a ride, or a challenge even, and if I could convince Maria to give it a go surely other ladies might do the same. We organised some after-

READY TO RIDE: Girls just wanna have MTB fun. work and weekend rides with a few experienced girls on the Spring Gully trails. “They taught us some basic skills and although I was very much out of my comfort zone, the support of these ladies gave me the confidence I needed and I became addicted,” Maria said. With the promise of a fun, supportive and non-competitive event, word quickly spread. The first year 48 women and girls aged eight to 60 joined in, laughing and cheering each other on even as the rain belted down during the last hour. I knew then that we had stumbled upon something great – and that this could be

just the thing to get more ladies out on their bikes. Maria is coming back this year for her fourth go at the women’s challenge. “The support that everyone shows keeps me coming back – from those who are taking it seriously to the others like me having a laugh,” she says. “Oh, that, and the bubbles at the end.” Sponsored by The Bendigo Club, Bendigo Cycles, UFS Optical, Fusions Physio and Yogahara, to name a few, this year’s event will be held this Sunday, May 26, 9am-2pm at the Spring Gully Mountain Bike trailhead at Wattle Drive. After the huge success of 2018, where over 100 riders

attended, we are trying something a little different this year, offering two separate tracks: a shorter, easier one for newer riders and a longer, more difficult for intermediate riders. We want women of all ages and abilities to come and have a go. Whether you’re fast or slow, a nervous nelly or cool as a cucumber, it doesn’t matter: it’s your day and your ride. Registration is open for adult and junior solo or pairs on Saturday 4-5pm and Sunday 8.45-9.45am. Racing gets underway from 10am. For more information please visit the club’s facebook page or go to website www.mtbbendigo.com

Open Day at Botanic Gardens THE City of Greater Bendigo is using Botanic Gardens Day as an opportunity to invite members of the public to discover the latest developments in the increasingly exciting Botanic Gardens in White Hills. Team leader Kirstie Paterson said the Bendigo Botanic Gardens open day, on Sunday, May 26, will feature guided tours of both the Garden for the Future and the Heritage Gardens as well as displays of botanical illustrations and a plant sale. “The new Garden for the Future has

now been open for 12 months and it’s looking fantastic, while the Heritage Gardens have been open for over 160 years and are almost as old as Bendigo itself,” she said. “The open day is an opportunity to appreciate our Botanic Gardens, experience plant collections that you won’t often see in home gardens or just explore and enjoy the lovely surrounds of this wonderful part of Greater Bendigo.” Free activities on the day include tours at 11.30am and 1pm.

The aviary will be open from 11am to 2pm and a staff member will be in attendance to answer any questions. The Friends of the Bendigo Botanic Gardens Illustrators will be available from 11am to 2pm in the Samuel Gadd Centre and plants will be for sale between 11am and 2pm. This event is presented by the City of Greater Bendigo and BGANZ (the chief body representing the interests of botanic gardens both in Australia and New Zealand).

ROSIE Gennaro and Jimmy Hailler first cross paths under the most unexpected of circumstances. Sydneysider Rosie is in Central Queensland escaping the misery of her father’s sudden death and the realisation that his widow, her despised stepmother, is refusing to relinquish control of a house renovated years earlier by Rosie’s parents. Jimmy is also serving a period in exile, unable to leave the Sunshine State to return to his own home in Sydney until a good-behaviour bond has been completed. When pitching in to help a town besieged by flooding brings the pair together for a fortnight, they find comfort in each other. Two years later, having rediscovered a mobile phone misplaced after he and Rosie parted, Jimmy retrieves 12 months’ worth of voicemail and is shocked to discover he has a son. Toto is living with Rosie at her old family home in Dalhousie Street, Haberfield – just a hop, skip and jump from the neighbourhood in which some of Jimmy’s closest friends live. Now working as a FIFO miner Jimmy can afford to fly from Brisbane to Sydney to visit Toto and Rosie – but will he be welcome? Afraid of following his parents’ poor example and disappointing his child, he hesitates. Rosie is struggling. Reliant on welfare payments to support herself and Toto she is confined to the upper level of her childhood residence. The rooms downstairs are the domain of 40-something Martha, still grieving the loss of her mother and then her husband in too short a time-span. Attractive and lonely, Martha has caught the attention of former rugby league star Ewan Healy, however, a man with an equally complicated life. The latest release from the queen of multigenerational, multicultural family fiction (most notably, Looking for Alibrandi), Marchetta interweaves the perspectives of Australians from various cultural backgrounds in a touching tale of mixed messages and uncertainty. – Rosalea Ryan

PINAL Health Week is an ideal time to take control of your back’s wellbeing, regardless of age, by ensuring appropriate therapeutic care as part of your spinal healthcare regime. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare predicts Australians aged 65 and over will make up 22 per cent of the population within the next 50 years, putting additional strain on already stretched health services. More than 3.7 million Australians reported back pain in 2015, according to the Australian

Chiropractors Association which is encouraging Australians to look after their spine by ensuring a healthy lifestyle and correct posture. “Back pain can have a damaging effect on a person’s quality of life by affecting their ability to participate at work, in social activities and sports,” ACA president Anthony Coxon said. In conjunction with Spinal Health Week, the ACA has recently announced the launch of the redeveloped Just Start Walking app to further motivate Australians

Workshop on wheels ready to roll

O matter what car you drive you’ll save time and money, when you phone Blue Toro’s Johan Hafkamp with his mobile fully-equipped workshop for all your vehicle servicing needs. Blue Toro has virtually overnight revolutionised the automotive service industry in just six years. The nationwide franchise of mobile workshops being the brainwave of Australian Automotive Aftemarket Association board member Janelle Gonzalez, whose franchisees offer unparalleled service backed a 12-month/ 20,000km parts and labour warranty. All Blue Toro’s mechanics own their own mobile business so they’re proactive in establishing loyal long-term relationships, not up-selling for maximum short-term profit. With close to 30 years in the automotive industry Johan can readily carry out all of

your log-book serving and repairs for both petrol and diesel vehicles for a fraction of the cost of traditional service centres, while offering a no-rip-off guarantee. “A Blue Toro automotive service won’t invalidate your manufacturers warranty either, despite myths to the contrary,” Johan said. “The other big advantage is convenience as I service your vehicle on site, meaning you don’t loose your vehicle for a day or longer leaving it at a dealership or service centre. “This is especially handy for tradies who can be back on the road with minimal downtime and being available six days a week means we’ll have no trouble scheduling a service at a time to suit.” So next time one of your vehicles requires servicing or repairs phone Johan from Blue Toro on 0403 537 780 to discuss your automotive servicing requirements. www.bluetoro.com.au/service-areas/vic/mechanicbendigo/

Under Victorian law, individuals must have a Property Identification Code (PIC) for properties on which they graze or keep the following livestock: Cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, alpaca, llamas, deer, horses or more than 50 poultry. It is now a legal requirement to include the PIC of the property at which the livestock are kept in any advertisement for the sale (including giving away or bartering) of those livestock. An alternative is to include the name and contact details of the livestock sales agent (if applicable) in the advertisement. It will be an offence for the vendor to fail to include the PIC in the advertisement, or for the media organisation who publishes the advertisement if it does not contain the required PIC.

Clean up on court THE Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football Netball League secured a clean sweep of all four football and netball matches against Outer East in Saturday’s clashes in the Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championships action. The senior football side were never troubled in a dominant display trademarked by ball efficiency, a committed defence and a display of teamwork that belied the fact this was a representative made up of players from across the competition. Bendigo won 18.17 (125) to 3.8 (26) victory at the Queen Elizabeth Oval, in a match played in superb conditions. Coming into the match, Bendigo was rated below Outer East in the rankings, but from the first bounce Bendigo jumped early and raced to an impressive 10-goal lead at the major break, only to continue to exert pressure on the visitors in a solid fourquarter display of attacking footy. Golden Square’s Jake Thrum was judged best on ground and a worthy winner of the Derrick Filo Medal as Bendigo’s best. Earlier, the Bendigo Under-18 representative side ground out a 10-point win to set the tone for a great day for Bendigo. The Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football Netball League outclassed opponents AFL East in both netball contests. The 55-40 result for the open side coached by Jayden Cowling was highlighted by a strong display in defence from team captain and Gisborne star Maddy Stewart Stewart won the best on court medal for her efforts, while other strong contributions came from Imogen Sexton, Allira Holmes, Chelsea Sartori and Clare Vearing. Saturday’s netball commenced with the under-17 representative team, who powered their way to a superb 62-35 win.

Athletes brighten up for colours day A NEW distance and course layout at Heinz Street provided South Bendigo athletes with an enjoyable run in perfect conditions last Saturday. Some 58 club members dressed in their favourite sporting teams’ jumper for Colours Run Day, which features a sealed handicap style race. Hawthorn tragic Peter Lubusque was 22nd over the line, while the strongest runner came in 63 seconds sooner than expected in the double lap category. Minor places were battled out by Josh Ketterer and fastest athlete Will Noden. In the single lap division, fitness entrepreneur Sophie Hawken blitzed the field running a time of 15 minutes and three seconds, only just missing out on the sub one

minute handicap. The underage race was won by Kate Winning, running the fastest 800 metres by an under 10 girl at the South Bendigo Athletic Club in the past 20 years. The previous fastest time was held by her sister Megan Wilson, set in 2016. The final race was the closest of the day, with Allie Guillou running her fastest club run ever to nudge Eli Pearce and Josh Ketterer. Athletes will endure One Tree Hill with the University Athletics Club initiation at La Trobe University on Saturday, June 1 at Notley’s Reserve, Whipstick. New runners of all levels of fitness are welcome to join. If you have any enquires, call Peter on 0417 684 306 for more information.

Top athletes warm up for memorial THE Tracy Wilson Memorial three kilometre will be run at Bendigo University Athletics Club’s by invitation this Saturday at La Trobe University in Flora Hill. Long-time competitor Tracy Wilson is highly regarded for his work with Little Athletics Bendigo, as well as playing football for Marong Football Netball Club, and his off-field commitment at Strathfieldsaye Storm Football Netball Club. An action-packed after-

noon of athletics hosted by Bendigo University will include the 7.6km for open-age, plus 40-plus, 50plus and 60-plus men and women from 2pm. The three kilometre also starts at 2pm and includes open, under-16 and under-12 categories. The finale to the afternoon is the one kilometre for open, under-10, under-8 and under-6 at 1km. On-line entries close at 11.50pm on Friday. Entry fees on the day are $10 adults, $5 students/

children and close 15 minutes before race start. Athletes from a wide range of ages and abilities will compete. Meanwhile, South Bendigo Athletics Club will host a fund-raising barbecue for young stars Emma Berg and James Woods this Saturday morning at Long Gully IGA. Emma and James will compete at next month’s Oceania Regional Championships in Townsville. The reigning national shot put champion, Emma

will aim to surpass her previous best and possibly claim another medal. James was runner-up in the under-17 pole vault at this year’s national titles in Sydney. His campaign in Townsville includes the under-18 pole vault, 100m and high jump as he competes for the Regional Australia team. The championships are on from June 25 to 28 and will include University’s Andy Buchanan, 5000m, and Eaglehawk’s Kye Mason, 100m, in action.

Lightning strikes win at Werribee NORTHWEST Lightning women’s hockey team took to the road last weekend to play at Werribee’s Ashley Street complex. The Victoria League 1 reserves team scored an early first quarter goal and never looked back, winning 3-1. Gabby Sylivris directed play from

the midfield, with goals to Beau Starrit, Meg Ronnfeldt and Samara Scarff ensuring victory. It was a high scoring draw for the Victoria League 1 side, with a tied score of 4-4 at full time. There were two goals to captain Chelsea Hird on her return and sin-

gles to Jorgie Wright and Kate Shallard. With a number of injuries and the team battling for numbers, everything was left on the park against Werribee. Both teams are now looking towards their next battle against West Victoria in Ballarat tomorrow.

Pies take on the West THE Collingwood Magpies return to Bendigo this weekend to take on the West Coast Fever in the Suncorp Super Netball competition. The Magpies have adopted Bendigo as a home away from home, opting to play two matches at the Bendigo Stadium this season. Heading into Round Five of the competition, the Magpies sit in fourth position on the ladder, while the West Coast Fever are yet to win a game. Magpie co-captain,

Geva Mentor told the club’s website piesnetball.com.au that netball was more than a sport, and that’s why the club supported the development of elite netball in the City of Greater Bendigo. Most importantly, Mentor raved about Bendigo Stadium and its facilities, and urged supporters of the game to come along and experience high quality netball at one of Australia’s best stadiums. “The stadium has an amazing layout for our supporters with a great

Pipped at the post

bar for food and drink, and ample parking. I encourage everyone to come see what the city and stadium have to offer,” Mentor said. Collingwood members will also have access to a post-game event in the Sky Lounge at Bendigo Stadium, where players will do meet and greets, and signings as part of their commitment to the sport and the local community. Saturday’s round five action tips off at 3pm, at Bendigo Stadium.

Warriors bury Miners THE Bendigo Fighting Miners’ hoodoo at Melton’s home ground has continued after a 71-3 drubbing by the Warriors. The Warriors now call Frontier Reserve in Rockbank home, with their former base of MacPherson Park far from a happy hunting ground for Bendigo. The rivalry between the two clubs goes back to the early 1980s when they contested a number of grand finals. The Warriors came into the game with an 0-3 record, but still significantly outperformed the Miners. Strong running and accurate passing got the Warriors on the

front foot, as they ran in 11 tries after just 60 minutes. Melton scored their first try after just four minutes and dominated the set piece and breakdown. It was a scoreless final quarter of the game for both sides. Bendigo’s injuries from their narrow win against Ballarat a fortnight ago proved costly with loose forward Matt Boyle and Steve Reynolds both suffering knee njuries, while winger Trent Clampit was also sidelined. The Miners are at home this Saturday, May 25 against the Shepparton Bulls from 3pm at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve.

HEADS UP: Braves star Dyson Daniels. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN By NICHOLAS NAKOS

GUARD Dylan Travis capped off a memorable night for the Waverley Falcons by sinking a dramatic buzzer beating three pointer to clinch an 89-86 win for the visiting team in round seven NBL1 action. The Falcons led at every change before a spirited Braves comeback in the fourth quarter had them level in the dying stages, with Ray Turner missing a shot with four seconds left that could have given Bendigo the lead.

Recent signing Mathiang Muo top scored with 27 points for the Braves, including hitting four from six three-pointers. The Braves’ first loss in a month sees them slip to sixth in the standings with five wins and four losses this season. The Falcons move into the top four with six wins and three defeats in 2019. The Braves women are back on track after a loss to Geelong last time out, toppling Waverley 84-75. Bendigo came out of the

blocks firing, leading by 12 at quarter time and 18 points at the main break. Four players scored in double figures, including bench spark Bianca Dufelmeier who netted 17 points. New signing Becca Tobin logged nine points and eight boards in 23 minutes of action. It’s a road back-to-back in round eight action for the Braves, who play at Nunawading on Saturday night and at Dandenong on Sunday afternoon.

Two up for top prize

By PETER KENNEDY

ELITE swimmer Jenna Strauch and shot put champion Emma Berg have been named joint winners of this month’s PEAK Bendigo Sports Star of the Year nomination. Strauch was acknowledged for her efforts in winning the 200m breaststroke final at the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide with a personal best time of 2:24.88, almost two seconds faster than her previous best. The dedicated swimmer also finished third in the 100m breast-stroke final at the nationals, and remains on track to represent Australia at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Strauch has overcome long periods of illness that hampered her swimming career as a junior, and is now reaping the rewards of relocating to Queensland to train towards her goal. For her part, Emma Berg achieved a personal best of 14.24 metres on her way to winning the gold medal in the women’s open shot put at the prestigious Athletics Australia national track and field titles in Sydney. From Swan Hill, Berg competes with South Bendigo Athletics Club, and will next represent Australia at the Oceania Area athletics titles in Townsville in June. Berg is number one in national rankings for under-20 women’s shot put and number two at open level. Berg last month won the H.H. Hunter athlete of the year for the Bendigo Region for the 2018-19 athletics season.

CMC takes down arch-rivals

CLOSE BATTLE: CMC and BSSC fought hard. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN CATHERINE McAuley College has maintained its unbeaten status in the 2019 Premier League with a come from behind victory over arch-rivals Bendigo Senior Secondary College on Wednesday.

Played on Bendigo’s hallowed Queen Elizabeth Oval, the high quality match saw CMC get the early jump before their opponents rallied and took a three-point lead into the final change.

CMC refused to surrender though, and hard fought for its 9.8 (62) to 7.5 (47) victory. The win helped CMC avenge a narrow loss to BSSC in last year’s SSV Premier League final.
