The Weekly look at the local real estate market

High praise for low rates THE Reserve Bank of Australia’s decision to cut the official cash rate to a fresh historic low of 1.25 per cent is set to breathe new life into an already strong local property market. Tuesday’s announcement of a 0.25 per cent reduction in the cash rate is expected to be followed by at least one more cut in the next few months, and local real estate agents have welcomed the shift in rates. DCK Real Estate director Matt Bowles said the federal election result, which meant the industry had averted changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax implications, combined with a rate cut that appears will be passed on, had led to an increase in enquiry and certainly confidence in the market in particular residential investors. He said in the two weeks since the May 18 election, his firm had sold the same amount of investment properties as it did in the 10 weeks prior. PH Property principal Brad Hinton said Bendigo and the surrounding region was travelling quite well considering the real estate climate elsewhere. “With interest rates expected to drop, Bendigo will remain, if

not improve in pricing moving towards the end of the year. “We have had some great reviews Australia wide from investment bloggers, writers and magazines over the past 12 months; this has only solidified new found investment from out-of-towners in the Bendigo region.” Mr Hinton said the Bendigo rental market was “as strong as ever”, which has partly driven this buoyant market of investors. Tweed Sutherland First National director Matt Leonard said this week’s 0.25 per cent drop in the official cash rate means to an average mortgage of $300,000 could save $750 a year. “While this is not a substantial reduction in annual mortgage repayments, it certainly helps to offset expenses such as rates and outgoings. “This also means more competition and sharper rates from the banks, also it may be worth getting financial advice in relation to fixing a portion of the loan.” Mr Leonard said prior to Tuesday’s announcement some financial institutions had already lowered their rates on fixed-term loans.

NEW LIFE: Rate cuts will encourage buyers. Bendigo Real Estate principal Nekti Tzouroutis welcomed the cut in interest rates and said it would help stimulate an already “steady” market. “With rates now at an alltime low and promising to compliment the recent activity heading into the cooler months, it is a brilliant time not just to dip your toe into the market, but dive straight in.

“With the federal election now over, the stability and promise from the coalition should attract many first home buyers and investors which will benefit the local landscape and economy.” He said now was also a good time for would-be sellers to test their home on the market and present it to the best of its ability.

Public wary of GBM plan Woodvale residents claim site mismanaged

By PETER KENNEDY

WOODVALE residents are sceptical of a gold mining company’s plan to create a $100 million solar farm on the site of now disused evaporation ponds. The Woodvale Progress Association met late last month and have unanimously supported a motion to support the rehabilitation of the ponds as per an agreed plan and audit. The group wants the controversial evaporation ponds to undergo the “highest possible standard of rehabilitation in the shortest time possible”, in line with the Woodvale Community Plan supported by the Woodvale Progress Associa-

tion and the City of Greater Bendigo. GBM Gold Ltd wants to create a 60 megawatt solar power plant as it looks to re-purpose the ponds, which have been home to groundwater pumped as part of gold mining activities beneath Bendigo and associated dewatering processes. GBM Gold Limited chief executive officer John Harrison last month said the large-scale project, which still requires approval, would improve Bendigo’s resilience to electricity grid problems, and was also in line with state and local government

renewable energy policies. Residents say they are open to ideas that may achieve ultimately a better environmental outcome for Woodvale, including potentially a solar farm, and they are also supportive of renewable energy, but rehabilitation of the evaporation ponds by GBM Gold Ltd needs to progress in a timely fashion. The reported solar farm proposal is the latest in a series of proposals that GBM have put forward which the group says have stalled and delayed rehabilitation. “In the meantime the Woodvale community are left with a con-

taminated and mismanaged site.” In a stinging rebuke of GBM, the residents group says the company “have proven to be experts at evading their obligations, including their recent responding to government notices with legal action instead of compliance”. A rehabilitation plan prepared for the Woodvale site would see one of the ponds converted to a deep fill zone, with contaminants from other ponds to be stockpiled to a repository in its floor. Mr Harrison told journalists at last month’s announcement of the solar farm plan that the company

was in close contact with residents, and he was confident the proposal can gain approval, describing the project as “robust”. GBM Gold Ltd has experienced financial difficulties and remains suspended on the Australian Stock Exchange. The company’s Bendigo mining licenses have expired. The Woodvale Progress Association says a $100 million solar farm is an extremely ambitious project for such a financially-strapped company to be proposing. The organisation says it remains committed to working with all parties towards the timely and proper rehabilitation of the evaporation ponds.

ENERGETIC PERFORMERS: The Soweto Gospel Choir.

Award-winning choir tours region THE Soweto Gospel Choir is set to thrill audiences in Bendigo and Castlemaine in late August as part of a huge nationwide tour. Following the release of their Grammy Award winning album Freedom, the ensemble will tour Australia in July and August across 48 venues. General manager and bass singer Mulalo Mulovhedzi said that Freedom is a tribute to Nelson Mandela and is offered as a celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Based in South Africa, the choir started in Australia as an idea of promoter Andrew Kay. The choir has seen plenty of fresh faces in recent years, as previous members embark on solo careers. “We have lots of young people in the choir now and about 40 per cent of the original members,” Mr Mulovhedzi said. Known for their charismatic and energetic performances, the choir’s latest tour will take audiences on a journey.

“This is about showing the apartheid era to where South Africa is now as a country,” Mr Mulovhedzi said. “It is emotional, but also healing. It teaches people that you can forgive,” he said. The Soweto Gospel Choir will be performing at Bendigo’s Capital Theatre on Tuesday, August 27 and Castlemaine’s Theatre Royal on Thursday, August 29. QANTAS is still to decide where it will establish its second pilot training school, with Bendigo one of the final contenders, but it’s all systems go in Toowoomba where the carrier will open the first pilot academy in September. Toowoomba was announced last year as the first of two locations for the academy, chosen from a shortlist of nine regional cities. Alice Springs, Bendigo, Busselton, Dubbo, Launceston, Mackay and Wagga Wagga are all still under consideration for the second academy site with a decision expected soon. The academy is part of the Qantas Group’s strategy to build a longterm talent pipeline for its own airlines and help the broader industry meet the increasing need for skilled aviators. Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the academy was gearing up to start training the next generation of Australian pilots. “Qantas has a proud history for having some of the best pilots in the world. We want to attract passionate young men and women to learn from the best, to become the best,” Mr Joyce said. “More than 22,000 people have so far regis-

tered their interest in the academy so we expect there to be some exceptional talent amongst them putting their hand up to commence their pilot training.” Mr Joyce said the company was conscious there are several regional cities still waiting to hear whether they have been successful as the home of the second academy and appreciated their patience, as the carrier focuses on getting the first site to this stage. The academy course has been designed to train students with little to no flying experience and includes both theory and practical components. Students will graduate with a number of qualifications including a commercial pilot licence and relevant qualifications, ready to commence a career in commercial or general aviation. After graduation, students will join the Qantas Group’s pilot talent pool and have access to opportunities with partners in the aviation industry. Qantas will also offer a scholarships program to make a number of grants available. These range from covering the cost of accommodation through to full training.

In regional and rural Victoria, 85 deaths have been recorded this year, compared to 47 at the same time last year, an increase of approximately 80 per cent. Ms Pulford said it had been a heartbreaking year on Victorian roads and with winter upon us and a busy weekend coming up, road users need to take extra care

the dangers of driving, particularly on country Victorian roads, with black ice, fog, mist, rain, wind and land slips all potential hazards.

DRIVERS have been urged to slow down and adapt to changing conditions, with the onset of winter and the approaching long weekend increasing risk levels on the state’s roads. Minister for Roads, Road Safety and TAC Jaala Pulford joined representatives from the Transport Accident Commission and VicRoads to call on Victorian motorists to be safe on the roads this winter. Sadly, 142 people have already lost their lives on Victo-

sions including; avoiding fatigue, avoiding drink and drug driving and avoiding distractions. The plea comes ahead of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend,

Perfect blend for festival WHAT do you get when you cross a stand-up comedian with a desire to write a novel? Answer – a tender and funny book, The Good Son (2018) by Greg Fleet. Mixing poignancy and humour, Fleet achieves a tone which is perfect for a story about how we treat the elderly people in our lives. The set up involves a young man who misses the death of his mother who is in a nursing home and responds by trying to make amends by becoming the surrogate family member for other lonely souls. “The novel examines the issue of age-care which is basically appalling,” Fleet said. “It’s just dumb-luck really. I didn’t know the Royal Commission was about to take off.” When discussing his writing, Fleet said he enjoyed the process enormously. “When my partner Roz Hammond would come home I would read the day’s work to her over a glass of wine... and she would give me feedback. “It was exciting and rewarding. Now I want to develop the novel as a Netflix-type series. “I’ve sent it off to America and shown it to a couple of actors and have their enthusiastic support,” Fleet said. “They thought it was a lovely story and very filmic. “I’m truly rapt. I had in the back of my mind that I would play the role of the son but you know what? If Ben Mendelsohn accepted the part, I’d let him play it,” Fleet said, laughing. “If the series gets up, I’ll take

with many Victorians expected to head to the mountains to kick-off the snow season. People driving in and around the alpine region, or travelling home, should plan ahead and allow plenty of time to get to their destination safely. Five people died on the state’s roads on the corresponsing weekend last year, and as pat of a major four-day safety campaign across Victoria, police have vowed to crack down on anyone detected breaking the law.

POPULAR EISTEDDFOD THE Annual Eisteddfod is attracting more entries than ever before. Fay Thomas, president of Bendigo Competitions said entries have increased – particularly in piano and contemporary vocal. The Eisteddfod provides young performers from Bendigo, across Victoria and interstate with the opportunity of performing in front of professional adjudicators and receiving a critique of their performance. Contemporary vocal has grown so much that this will be held over two weekends including the long weekend of June 8, 9 and 10. STUDENTS HONOURED FOUR Catherine McAuley College students and graduates have been honoured as part of the Premier’s VCE Awards. Kate Boon, Luke Harris, Matthew McDonald and Lileigh Rivett were among more than 290 award recipients recognised for their demonstrated outstanding achievement in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). The awards are the highest honour that students can receive in individual subjects in the VCE system.

READY: Comedian and writer Greg Fleet. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN myself off to New York and work from there for inspiration.” For Fleet, writing the novel was satisfying but far more challenging than writing his memoirs, These Things Happen (2015). “I’d basically lie in bed of a night and recall some appalling episode in my life,” he said. “Then get up and write about it the next morning.” Which gets us onto the subject of Fleet’s well-known heroin addiction. “I’m fine,” he said. “I wouldn’t be able to write the book or develop the series otherwise. But

you have to be ever vigilant and stay aware. “And I’ve been lucky. I’ve been let off the hook so many times.” Fleet said the way he finally broke through his addiction was to remove himself from his usual environment. “I stayed away from the places where I could get the stuff. “And you don’t make excuses. So get away. That’s the advice I would give people. Get away. What’s more important? Taking a couple of weeks off work against a lifetime of addiction?” Fleet lives alone these days in

small unit in St Kilda. He has a daughter who he adores. “She’s lovely but I had a terrible impact on her. It breaks my heart when I think of her. “When you live the way I did, the impact on other people is horrible.” But that was then. Apart from stand-up and writing books, Fleet is enjoying teaching comedy. He’s been to Bendigo a few times in this capacity and is looking forward to participating in the Bendigo Writers Festival. – Dianne Dempsey

Staff trained to recognise cues BY DIANNE DEMPSEY

RESPONDING to the recommendations of the of the Royal Commission into Family Violence, Bendigo Health has been training staff to recognise and respond to the signs of domestic violence. The program has been running since 2014 and Dr Angela Crombie, the Director of Innovations and Research said it had been an outstanding success. “We evaluated our staff after delivering modules and were happy to say that everyone increased their knowledge of domestic violence and were better able to respond when it occurred,” she said. Dr Crombie said the two areas in hospitals where domestic violence was most likely to occur were the Emergency Department and in the antenatal clinics. Across the board pregnancy is a domestic violence trigger. She explained that in the latter setting, domestic violence would not usually be explicit but would rather take the form of a husband controlling his wife. “When the wife is pregnant he will not leave her side. He will be intrusive and won’t let her talk for herself. “He may withhold her medication or take her phone off her.

“Nurses are very good at reading these non-verbal cues. “If a nurse feels the wife may be trying to deal with a possessive husband she will find an excuse to take the wife away from the husband. “She may say something to the wife like ‘we have to take you to get a urine sample’.”

Nurses are very good at relationship management “Nurses are very good at relationship management,” Dr Crombie added with a smile. Once it has been established that the woman is in need of help staff give her information and resources to start to deal with the problem. According to Dr Crombie that help and advice is given in a discreet way so as not to provoke an abusive husband. The woman also knows she can come back to the hospital to use the phone and seek further help. Dr Crombie said the training consisted of an intensive one hour module.

“There are also other one hour modules around children and family violence and the impact on the elderly.” Dr Crombie said Bendigo Health was proud to be instrumental in rolling out the training modules across rural and regional Victoria and has trained more than 10,500 hospital staff. (While being gender specific Dr Crombie said that a small percentage of domestic violence was perpetrated by women on men.)

Let’s end FAMILY VIOLENCE

Working together to effect change

By NICHOLAS NAKOS

Service hosts workshop IN Australia, intimate partner violence contributes to more death, disability and illness in women aged between 15 and 44 than any other preventable risk factor. An alarming one in five women have experienced sexual violence and one in three have experienced physical violence since the age of 15. Bendigo’s Youth Support and Advocacy Service will be hosting a family violence workshop next month – Young Women, Drugs and Intimate Partner Violence – that will provide practical training strategies to support these at-risk young women in the community. YSAS’s workforce training manager Jo Driscoll said the workshop was designed for people working in the welfare, psychology

and education sectors. “There are no established protocols and guidelines on how to deal with young women, drugs and intimate partner violence,” Ms Driscoll said. Trainer Bianca Johnson has been researching the complex experiences of intimate and family violence, criminal justice, trauma and young women. The one-day workshop at Fosterville Gold Tennis Centre on Thursday, July 11 aims to help practitioners understand the unique vulnerabilities of young women and give them confidence to support and empower them. The session runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm and tickets are $120. To book, visit www.trybooking. com/BCYJE

Fun therapy for all GOLDEN Oaks Nursing Home was filled with laughter and a pinch of mayhem earlier this week when Kerran Norwood brought in her animals and puppets as part of a therapy session with the residents. Officially called Oddbod and Friends – a name which covers all bases – Ms Norwood uses the animals and puppets to encourage interaction between herself and the elderly residents who are often restricted by the effects of dementia. The noise level generally

lifts when the dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds plus music contribute to the general conversation. “We deliver happiness and friendship to our seniors, and indeed we go to the very bedside of confined and gravely ill people,” Ms Norwood said. Her leisure and healthbased program boosts morale, engages the senses and supports love and friendship. Explaining her motivation for creating the program Ms Norwood said she suffered from depression for 19

years and lived an isolated life. “It was my animals that saved me,” she said. “When I was lonely I had the unconditional support of the animals. “Then once I started working with residents it made me realise how fulfilling it was to help other people.” Ms Norwood said she was looking to attract sponsors and fundraisers to enable her to continue the work. She can be contacted on oddbodandfriends@gmail.com

“It was a regular day. I’d had ambulance duty the night before. I knew the terrain but it was dark, the driveway was steep and I was tired. Suddenly I was on the ground. I was trapped. It was a miracle that I survived.” David Elder Bethanga farmer

Witnesses sought in an argument with an unknown woman. Following the conversation with the woman the victim was approached by an unknown man from behind, and was then struck to the back of the head causing him to fall. The victim got up and quickly walked away along Laurel Street in the direction of Panton Street. A second unknown man appeared and both

men caught up with the victim and continued to assault him before the victim managed to run into a nearby business. The victim sustained a head injury requiring hospital treatment. The first man is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged in his early 30s, about 173cm tall, stocky build with short, balding hair. The second male is

perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, taller than the first man, aged in his late 20s to early 30s, of thin build, with dark, shoulder length hair. Anyone who witnessed the assault or has any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or they can submit a confidential crime report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com. au

Time to dive into MS swim ONE of the country’s most popular fundraising events is coming to Bendigo in August. The MS 24-hour Mega Swim will take place at Gunni Wanyarra on August 17 and 18 to raise money for the MS Go for Gold Scholarship program. This is the first time the event has come to Bendigo and local teams have been invited to register. Each team must have a member in the pool, swimming laps during a continuous 24-hour period. President of the Bendigo Rotary Club Libby Hughes is proud to support the event. “I have family members with MS and everyone you talk to knows somebody who has MS,” Ms Hughes said. “The Go for Gold scholarships help people do what they want to do, but their disease has stopped them from doing, such as go overseas or finish a uni course.” Jodie Haythorpe is an MS ambassador who benefitted from the Go for Gold scholarship program in 2008. “That scholarship helped me to financially fund my university degree,” Ms Haythorpe said. “Without that, I wouldn’t have been able to complete that degree, so I am forever thankful to the MS Society for that.” Aside from completing her studies in Criminology, Ms Haythorpe has volunteered at Bendigo’s MS support group for the past 11 years. “It has a community feel and it’s good for us to meet every month. Pledge to increase services

By NICHOLAS NAKOS

THREE new train stations in Huntly, Raywood and Goornong are one step closer, with last week’s state budget including a $49.6 million investment in stage three of the Bendigo Metro project. Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said this project will bring train services back to those communities that lost them years ago. “Those local communities can see that we are delivering on that commitment to deliver train services to those communities,” Ms Allan said. The three stations will be part of a Bendigo-Echuca line upgrade that includes planning to reopen Harcourt Station. There has been $91 million spent on the Bendigo and Echuca line upgrades, which will deliver stage two of the Bendigo Metro. That includes an improvement to train signalling infrastructure to allow higher frequency services between Bendigo, Epsom and Eaglehawk. There has also been an allocation of $5 million in the 2019/20 Victorian Budget for a new bio-wash facility in Bendigo. The state’s only existing biowash facility is currently in Melbourne. The facilities are much needed as part of ongoing train mainte-

New station design on track A BENDIGO architecture company has been chosen to redesign Bendigo’s iconic building as part of the $15.8 million upgrades to Bendigo and Eaglehawk train stations. e+ Architecture has been charged with delivering a range of projects including the redevelopment of Epsom Primary School and restoring heritage buildings as part of the Bendigo Hospital precinct. The station waiting area

will be fitted with new seating and toilet facilities will be upgraded with new changing facilities and hoists for people with disabilities. Once the design has been finalised, a contractor will be appointed to complete the station works in 2020. Minister for Transport Infrastructure and Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said these upgrades will ensure Bendigo Station provides a better,

more comfortable experience. “We’re making Bendigo Station better for everyone as we improve and preserve this historic building,” Ms Allan said. Upgrades to Eaglehawk Station are ongoing and include an extension of the platform and a new 60-space car park with taxi and drop-off areas. These works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Mental health inquiry

CENTRAL Victorians who want to have their say on the state’s mental health system have been encouraged to make an online submission before July 5. More than 1600 Victorians have attended community consultation sessions across the state to share their experience and ideas as part of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s mental health system. The Royal Commission has provided more than 60 consultation sessions in more than 20 regional, rural and metropolitan areas. Chair Penny Armytage said the community had shown a high level of interest and generous engagement. “This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has enabled us to hear so many

individual reflections and insights. The courage people have shown in sharing their often heartbreaking personal stories has been very powerful,” Ms Armytage said. “People also came with a strong commitment to contribute to improving the system and there was this warm, collective humanity at the sessions, which was very heartening.” Ms Armytage said there was great representation at the sessions from all areas and several common themes were shared including there being little or no services in the gap between GPs and crisis support. The ongoing stigma and discrimination for those experiencing mental

illness also came through as a major concern as did the inequity of treatment between different locations, but also the differences in the way mental health and physical health are treated. Ms Armytage said one of the consistent challenges was about people being told they weren’t sick enough to get help. “There is this incredible frustration in not being able to get their mental health needs responded to,” Ms Armytage said. “Our job is to come up with recommendations that are practical, implementable and will make real improvements to the future mental health system and hearing from the community has been an

important first step.” Victorians still have an opportunity to have their say and it’s easy to get involved by making an online submission. TOP OF THEIR CLASS: A happy Bendigo Brass Band.

Bendigo band blows comp away THE Bendigo Brass Band have won the C Grade competition at the Victorian Bands League’s Bendigo competition. The band, consisting of 35 members across a range of brass and percussion instruments, performed three pieces that wowed the adjudicator to beat four bands from across Victoria.

Competition was fierce, with the top four bands placing within three points of each other. Bendigo Brass Band’s music director Cally Bartlett said that her main goal was to have a jubilant band and to ensure everyone was working together. “One of the things the adjudicator said was that we were a happy

band,” Ms Bartlett said. “I was proud that he heard that we supported each other and that made me really happy.” Months of hard work paid dividends for the band, with performers on cornet, tenor horn, baritone, trombone, tuba, euphonium, the flugelhorn and percussion.

Rainfall shores up regional storage

COLIBAN Water storages remain in a good position to accept winter inflows after above average rainfall in the main catchment area above Kyneton during May. Regional Liveability Manager Steve Healy said the recent rainfall has wet up the catchment area around the water storages after a dry summer and dry start to autumn. “Our autumn rainfall was 149 millimetres, which is only eight millimetres less than the long-term average, but 87 per cent of that rainfall was in May,” Mr Healy said. “Our inflows are 61 per cent less than the long-term average but the

wetter conditions mean our catchments are well placed to receive inflows over winter and spring. “The winter-spring period is when we traditionally receive 8590 per cent of our annual inflow into our storages before we go into our peak summer demand period. “Our catchment storages were last full in October 2017 and we have been carefully monitoring and managing our resources. Coliban Water has nine separate water supply systems across its region, each with different supply source and level of water security – all reliant on rainfall over winter and spring. Mr Healy said permanent water

saving rules remain in place across the region and everything that’s done to conserve water – even in the cooler months – helps overall water security. “Using water efficiently is everyone’s responsibility to help secure our water supplies and maintain greener and more liveable communities now and into the future,” he said. “Water saving ideas for the home, business and garden can be found on our website.” Coliban Water has forecast the 2019/20 rural season to open at 100 per cent allocation and will announce the opening allocation on July 1. READY FOR WINTER: Malmsbury Reservoir.

Coliban starts water release COLIBAN Water has commenced releasing treated water from its Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant to the Campaspe River. Executive General Manager Water Quality, David Sheehan, said the controlled releases were necessary at this time to ensure lagoon embankments on site were protected. “Under our EPA Licence for the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant we are permitted to discharge treated water to the Campaspe River during periods of natural river flows, allowing for dilution of treated water with the river water,” Mr Sheehan said. “However with the dry autumn conditions there has been minimal flow in the Campaspe River, so we

have been unable to release to the river in a manner that is consistent with our licence conditions. There is also a reduced irrigation demand for recycled water at this time of the year and, as a result, the lagoons are approaching capacity.” Up to two megalitres of Class B standard recycled water will be released daily until weather conditions change, or there is increased demand for recycled water. “Our aim is to maintain our lagoon levels at 80 per cent capacity to ensure that there is sufficient storage for new inflows to the plant in the event of any significant rain events,” Mr Sheehan said. “We do anticipate that in coming weeks we will need to also release Class C

recycled water to the river as part of our daily controlled release, in order to protect lagoon infrastructure on site and manage the flow of water leaving the plant to the river in a controlled manner. “This will impact landowners downstream of the plant who draw water for stock and domestic purposes, as a minimum Class B standard is required for these purposes. The North Central Catchment Management Authority and GoulburnMurray Water have been notified of the releases, as have downstream users along the Campaspe River, who have also expressed some concern and frustration at a perceived lack of notice about the releases.

ARTISTIC RESPONSE: Dr Susan McMinn. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

New perspective THE current exhibition, Perspective, at the Soldiers Memorial Institute Military Museum is a fascinating response of artist Dr Susan McMinn to the museum’s archival collection. Dr McMinn did her doctoral thesis on the horse in war and has maintained an interest in war as a subject as part of her art practice. When she started searching through the archival collection she imagined the people behind the objects. “The narrative of the series relates the war back

to the family,” Dr McMinn said. She would then include a war object in a domestic still life, giving that object more potency. In one particular watercolour still life, Dr McMinn has depicted a hand grenade standing next to a vase of flowers. This contrast between the war and the domestic is enhanced by the position of display cases containing war memorabilia and the images which Dr McMinn has created.

Saturday June 15

Come and meet us to discuss what’s happening in your ward. Deputy Mayor Rod Fyffe

She was particularly intrigued by the “trench art” which is in the collection. Featured are butter and cheese knives which have been made from bullets and brass. “I was very moved on the opening night when I was talking about the exhibition,” Dr McMinn said. “I kept thinking of the soldiers who created the trench art, who wrote in the diaries and the families waiting at home.” Perspective will run until July 28. – Dianne Dempsey

Runway a pup? I WAS lucky enough to take the first Qantas flight from Bendigo to Sydney back on April 1. I was in Sydney in the time it would have taken me just to get to Tullamarine airport and, on my return, I was at home 10 minutes after I exited the plane. Excellent. I now have a keen interest in the Bendigo Airport and the proposed new terminal. Part of the upgrade would enable proper security screening of passengers and baggage. This would allow direct connections with flights at Sydney Airport, a great timesaver. The other supposed benefit is larger aircraft could be used into Bendigo. Regulations require the screening of passengers and their baggage on aircraft that have more than 50 passengers. This is where the issue is. The new runway at Bendigo Airport is 1600 metres long and 30 metres wide and has Pavement Classification Number (PCN) only 19. From my basic understanding and research, this would mean the next biggest plane from Qantas, Dash 8 Q400, with a capacity of just 74 passengers, will be weight limited flying out of Bendigo. The prospect of small regional jet airliners coming to Bendigo would not be possible, the runaway is long enough and wide enough but not strong enough. Some questions need to be asked. Was the current pavement strength part of the original $15 million runway project? If so, did council realise how limiting this will be for the future growth of air services at Bendigo Airport? Finally, is there any plan to increase the pavement strength of the runway and at what cost? Hopefully the council has not been “sold a pup” with the new runway, and we will be able to see bigger planes at Bendigo Airport, taking many more locals to more places around Australia, justifying the cost of the proposed new terminal. Simon Dillon, Kennington

Coalition hypocrisy I COMMEND last week’s letter writer, Pat Horan from Sebastian. Those insightful comments in regard to the recent election win will, in due course, reveal the Coalition’s hypocrisy and prevarication on important issues. More than a dozen impor-

tant issues were highlighted, from anticipated cuts to the ABC and continued unemployment and underemployment. Sadly, I expect we will see the continued harsh detention of refugees on Manus and Nauru and probably the discontinuation of medevac – medical treatment in Australia for seriously ill detainees. Very worryingly too, is this government’s lack-lustre approach to the harmful effects of climate change. This was the climate change election for many of us, but it is not reflected in policies announced about preserving our environment, protecting threatened species, or even our shaky economy for that matter. Saving the Great Barrier Reef does not rank highly with this government. The Adani mine in Queensland could prove disastrous for the atmosphere. The value of increased employment of locals by Adani is debatable. There may be a need for additional workers in the development stages but later on, automation will do the work, if imported Indian workers do not fulfil roles as well. It is hard to see that a surplus will be delivered in a slowing economy and with proposed tax cuts. Since the Coalition came to power six years ago the national debt has doubled. Wendy Hebbard, Woodend

A shout out for our Ambos I WAS called recently because Claude, as in Claude Raymond Critchley, was being attended to by ambulance folk and the caller thought I might be able to help, as Claude is a great friend of our family. When I arrived at the scene Claude was being attended to by Sarah and Tim from Ambulance Victoria. What fabulous people they are. Some of us know Claude can sometimes be a bit difficult. These two Ambos were kind, understanding, respectful, professional, generous and compassionate with Claude – the list could go on. They tended to him beautifully and what could have been a difficult situation wasn’t. We all left smiling – and Claude was okay. Claude is often tired. Very tired. Because he walks kilometres a day. He’s 64 this year. I’d be tired walking all day too.

PICK OF THE WEEK: A rainy day in Bendigo. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN For more photos go to www.newbendigophotos.com Especially in the cold we are currently experiencing. These ambulance folk were a great example to all of us. If you’re kind to Claude, he’s likely to be kind towards you in return. Thanks so much Sarah and Tim. You displayed a great example of your profession. Margot Spalding, Bendigo

Lessons learned IT is curious that Don Erskine and Trevor Phillips have used the layout of Canberra as a reference for their plan for future development in Bendigo. Unfortunately it appears they have been looking into Canberra’s past for inspiration rather than for lessons to be learned. The 1960s and 1970s saw rapid growth in Canberra. Most of the new development was planned in low density, decentralised satellite centres. This design created a heavy reliance on private car ownership. This has had negative impacts on public health, community engagement, traffic congestion and the environment. To combat these negative impacts from past plans, a theme of Canberra’s current development plan in the ACT Planning Strategy 2018 is “compact and efficient”. This strategy reduces the cost to the community by optimising the use of existing infrastructure. If you visit Canberra now you will see they are improving pub-

lic transport and building medium density housing in existing suburbs. This helps create a vibrant connected community, with improved livability which is accessible to all. Sounds like a good plan to me. Michael Tolhurst, Kennington

Council plays dumb IT would be highly overstating the facts if we thought this council and the past several have truly considered the best interests of our Bendigo CBD. The CBD stands for Central Business District and business is what they have continually failed to support. Indeed even now they are not willing to take ownership of past mistakes and reverse any of their poor decisions of the past. We have a council today and in the past that have falsely tried to prop up our CBD with government offices and workers and now a government hub to add to previous costly mistakes. It was one of our previous councils who removed the majority of our tram network, one of Australia’s best regional tram systems. Our council – which allowed a full shopping center on its CBD fringe and continues to support our mall as most others remove theirs. Deterring shoppers by increasing both parking fees and fines and council’s greedy grab for ratepayers cash has hit a new level. Council have used a loophole

in section 90 of the road traffic and management act and are using their authority as a statutory body to fine people on private property at the Bendigo Marketplace. This is wrong on so many levels and shows the true colours of our council. Vested interests seem to play a large part in so many of the council’s decisions, for example the new $20 million dollar plus car park, just a few years old which was falsely portrayed to solve parking problems. It’s not right that our council are quick to fine those selling vehicles and those who illegally park around major events such as the swap meet, while most go unchallenged. The council has a large stake in the Bendigo Stadium so perhaps that’s why their many large events do not attract scrutiny and never a fine issued. Parking on nature strips is also not allowed and yet overlooked 99.9 per cent of the time, showing our council cares when it suits them. For many years the council has received valuable advice from the community and those in business on the issue of parking and improving the viability of the CBD and most has fallen on deaf ears. When the council finally realises it is not all about the arts or the so-called interest groups and starts to listen we just might get back to some common sense solutions. Stuart Symes, Epsom

Feeling dark? FOR all of us, our relationships are a key to our health – both physical and mental. Relationships are essential to who we are, they are not an extra. Time invested in building strong relationships with a partner, children, family and friends, creates the bedrock for wellbeing and a strong sense of identity for everyone involved. This two-way giving and receiving in relationships provides long-term security and a foundation for all the rest of life; at home, at work, and in the community. For men though, it can sometimes be more difficult to give relationships the time and attention they deserve because of the expectation they feel to be a provider, and to prioritise that role. When under pressure at work, this tendency can be reinforced and can even become a way of coping with relationship tensions and difficulties

by avoiding them. Unfortunately, when men feel overwhelmed and stop giving to their relationships, a downward spiral inevitably follows and he and those close to him all lose out. When this starts to happen, it’s important to recognise what’s going on and take positive steps towards restoring these essential relationships. It can be as simple as taking stock of priorities, talking to those close to you about what’s happening and how to get back on track. If that seems too hard and some professional support is needed, there are services such as CCS Family and Relationship Services (see advertisement below) which focus on strengthening and restoring relationships, particularly for couples and families. This Men’s Health Week, do yourself a favour and give time to your relationships.

Heart disease still prevalent C ARDIOVASCULAR disease is a common and serious disease in Australia with millions of people having the condition. Despite significant advances in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, it results in more deaths than any other disease. If you are male, 40 and live in Australia, your chance of having a heart attack by age 70 years is one in two. “Unfortunately half of the men who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have no previous symptoms,” High St Xray’s Dr David McKenna said. One way of screening the general population, is with a CT coronary calcium scan. “A coronary calcium scan is a test that looks for specks of calcium in the walls of the coronary arteries, in layman’s terms; hardening of the arteries. “These calcifications are a sign of cardiovascular disease and can be detected quickly and non-invasively with a CT scan of the heart.” No special preparation is necessary and there is no medication or contrast administered. “The science of calcium scores has been established over several decades demonstrating that the calcium score is an

independent predictor of mortality,” Dr McKenna said. “In the event of an abnormal coronary calcium score, your general practitioner will advise appropriate follow-up and treatment. “This will usually involve modification of risk factors; aggressive control of cholesterol, hypertension or diabetes, smoking cessation or consideration of daily aspirin.” High St Xray, 149 to 151 High Street, Bendigo, phone 5441 9999.

ould you give up 45 minutes of your time if your life depended on it? Absolutely you would. Sadly, too many men don’t. Bendigo Community Health Services Men’s Health Clinic nurse practitioner Peter Strange says too many men seek help when it’s too late. “If you have elevated cholesterol, sugar, high blood pressure or a family history the chances are you won’t feel sick at all but your life will be under attack,” Peter said. “The top killers of men are heart disease, smoking-related lung disease, stroke, prostate and bowel cancer, suicide, diabetes, pneumonia, the flu, car accidents and dementia. Any of these could be just around the corner for you but the good news is almost all of them are preventable if you are proactive and get the right support.” Now, can we have that 45 minutes? The right price and good advice

AGGERTS Discount Carpets & Vinyls’ Trevor and Dora Taggert have barely caught their breath after their successful “Salebration” sale earlier this year, celebrating 30 years of supplying quality and competitively priced floor coverings throughout the region. Vinyls start at just $15 a metre, with plenty of bargains still to be had throughout their Sandhurst Road store. And remember if it’s not in stock they can order it in for you from their trusted suppliers. Carpet, sheet vinyl, vinyl planks and rubber tiles it’s all here along with good old-fashioned service, being the secret to Taggerts’ longevity and success which first started from a farm shed in Woodvale. “Currently we have some great specials

on wool and wool-blend carpets with a natural and luxurious feel, providing style and warmth to any room,” Trevor said. They can even advise customers about the most cost-effective, flooring solutions for their particular needs, as well as assistance with colour selection. “The cheapest carpet is not always the best, especially if it’s going to wear out in a couple of years.” And for customers seeking genuine value, Taggerts always have a clearance sale under way on various discontinued or discount lines. Taggerts Discount Carpets & Vinyls, with more than 700 rolls of stock, open Monday to Friday and late Saturday mornings at 18 to 20 Sandhurst Road, California Gully, phone 5446 1416.

ESPITE winter finally arriving it’s never too late to install the Australian made Bradfords’ Optimo underfloor insulation or Gold hi-performance ceiling batts, featuring unrivalled R-value ratings, providing superior insulation qualities along with a 70 year performance warranty. And with no end in sight to exorbitant electricity and gas bills there has never been a better time to contact Flat Batt’s Mark Mitchell, to find out more about quality thermal insulation to help provide sustainable, indoor comfort all year round, regardless of season. “Bradford’s insulation batts really do make a difference to both your personal comfort levels and your energy bills, winter and summer ” Mark said. Available for quotes seven days a week, Mark can recommend and install the best insulation for your ceilings, floors and walls for keeping the heat in or out.

Knowing the difference between R-values is important as it can mean the difference between getting an average product with average benefits, and getting the best product with superior performance. That is where Mark’s experience and advice really excels, despite price being important. And with many Australian families concerned about allegies, particularly with young children, Flatt Batts recommend Bradford insulation, being an approved partner with the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice Program. Phone Mark from Flat Batts insulation today, on 0432 172 351 to find out how the right insulation can transform your house into a more comfortable home, all year round. CHURCH NOTICES 1 PETER 3:14

But if you also suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. And do not fear, nor be troubled, 15 but set aside the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason of the hope in you, with meekness and fear; 21 having a good conscience toward God, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ; 22 who is at the right hand of God.

CraftAlive Bendigo Christmas Spectacular - 4 days of craft action Craft enthusiasts are travelling far and wide to be part of CraftAlive Bendigo. All 4 days will be packed full of the latest craft supplies and equipment. Exhibitors are a range of Australia’s most talented craft experts. CraftAlive Bendigo is happening Thursday 13 – Sunday 16 June, at Prince of Wales Showgrounds. Now in its 29th year, CraftAlive is Australia’s largest and longest running craft event series. CraftAlive has been held in Bendigo for over 25 years. This year, the event has been expanded to 4 days and has a Christmas theme with big displays, craft supplies and competitions. Doors open Thursday from 9.30am to 4pm, with classes running all 4 days. The event will feature an array of craft supplies and equipment from traditional to modern, including stamping, card making, scrap booking, hand embroidery, needlework, patchwork, fabric dying, quilting, machine applique, long arm quilting, beading, yarn...and more. Sit down with ‘craft celebrities’ / Australia’s most talented craft experts CraftAlive Bendigo is a hands-on event with over two hundred classes – something for all skills sets and ages. Here’s just a few of the exciting designers and teachers holding classes. High profile young designers teaching exclusive new designs at the event. • Sew Quirky, Mandy (QLD) famous for unique modern machine applique. With a huge online following. Holding 3 classes daily including her new release - Budgie Buddies. • Amy Kallissa (VIC) and her clever hand embroidery and hoop art projects. Amy describes stitchery as “just like colouring with a needleâ€?. Amy’s classes are modern, cheeky and hugely popular. • Scrapmatts (QLD) owner and designers, Sofie Rossides, is holding card classes all weekend with various techniques using chipboard, inks and embellishments. The list goes on! Check out the full list of exhibitors and classes online, including local names like Mulberry Lane Quilting and the Bendigo Woodturners. Top tip: Class seats are limited. Go online to plan your day and book tickets. Sally Taylor, CraftAlive Event Manager comments: Craft is such a diverse area, the quality and range of exhibitors coming to Bendigo this week / next week is something to shout about. From local teachers through to the newest designers. There really is something for every skill set and age. Classes do book out, we recommend going online to book your spot before the show. You can also buy tickets online for the show and save. www.craftalive.com.au

State champs in town BENDIGO will host the 68th Victorian Country Table Tennis Championships across the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. The second largest table tennis tournament in Australia comes to town from tomorrow until Monday, with this the fourth consecutive year the championships have been held in Bendigo. More than 400 participants will take part in the play, with last year’s 114 teams eclipsed by this year’s number of 119 teams. Sixty-eight new players will attend for the first time in both teams and individual events,

with 57 tables to be used to host the event at the Table Tennis and Badminton Stadium in Eaglehawk. There are 11 teams from Bendigo hoping for championship glory. The general public is invited to attend and watch the action for free. Awards will be presented by Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards, Cr James Williams and the chief executive officer of Table Tennis Victoria Ritchie Hinton following the men’s and women’s singles final on Monday afternoon. SET: Players to converge on Eaglehawk.

Ashes dream comes true

WICKET TAKER: Tayla Vlaeminck.

From Page 28 “My role will be as the wicket taker I think, I will just try my best and run in and compete. I’m a pretty competitive person, so my role… is to just try and bowl as quick as I can really,” she said. Vlaeminck was also this week named as the Hobart Hurricanes’ newest recruit for summer’s Women’s Big Bash League, heading south from the Melbourne Renegades where she’s been for the past three seasons and made her competition debut last December.

She’ll make Hobart home for the length of the competition, and said it was the club’s offering in terms of games, program and new players which encouraged her to make the move. “Hopefully to be a part of that would be something really cool, and it was an opportunity I couldn’t really pass up,” she said. Vlaeminck heads to Brisbane next week for final training with the Ashes side, before flying out for the first match of the series in Leicester on July 2.

South’s Noden takes fastest time SOUTH Bendigo Athletic Club’s most recent meetings took them to Notley’s Reserve in the Whipstick Forest. The course followed past years, with a tight corner before a steady climb. Runners then turned around and finished with the tight corner, making the final sprint more difficult. In the 6.5 kilometre event, a small but high

quality field including new father Peter Curtis, started alongside the three kilometre runners. Will Noden continued his fine form with the fastest time of 24 minutes and 46 seconds, finishing just ahead of invitational runner Peter King, who clocked a time of 25 minutes and two seconds. Jackie Guillou was the fastest female at 35 minutes and 48 seconds, ahead of

Lara Pearce. In the 3km event, Caitlin Campbell came across the line first, followed by long-time club member Amanda Worthington. Eli Pearce was the fastest on the day with a time of 11 minutes and 31 seconds. New runner Brady Shelton took the honours in a small field for the 800 metres. In the last event of the day, Nathan Brennan

finished first in the 1500 metres. The next club run takes place tomorrow at Pearces Road, Mandurang. Events include 6.5km, 3km, 1500m and 800m. Runners of any level of fitness are welcome to join. If you would like more information about the club, please call Peter on 0417 684 306 or visit the South Bendigo Athletic Club Facebook page.

Action abounds across country THERE is plenty of cross-country racing dotted around Bendigo for athletes to contest this Saturday afternoon. South Bendigo Athletics Club will host events across four distances at Pearces Road in Mandurang. Athletes can enter the 6.5km, 3km, 1.5km or 800m. Racing starts at 1.30pm with the combined 6.5km and 3km events. Bendigo University AC will host the Rifle Range Rattle in Junortoun. The race is not near the rifle range in Wellsford Forest, but from the Army Barracks in Junortoun. From Bendigo, travel east along McIvor Highway, turn left at Pope’s Road and follow the signs. The 7.9km event will start at 2pm and be followed by the 1km about 3pm, and then 3.4km and 500m races. Athletes racing in the 7.9km are to register from 1.30pm, and from

about 2.30pm for the shorter distance runs. Bendigo Harriers will host a club run at Vahland Road in Emu Creek. To get to the course, head out to Strathfieldsaye, follow Emu Creek Road and turn right at Vahland Road. Distances on offer are 500m, 1km, 3km and 5km. Cross-country action for Eaglehawk Athletics Club is at Notleys Reserve in the Whipstick Forest. Meanwhile, Flack Advisory Bendigo Region’s cross-country teams were in great form in last Saturday’s second round of Athletics Victoria’s XCR19 series. Racing was at St Anne’s Winery in Myrniong near Bacchus Marsh. Highs for Bendigo were third placing in division three men, runner-up in division five men and division four women. Next round is on, Saturday June 15 at Bundoora.

Miners find form THE Bendigo Miners have bounced back from two losses with a dominant win against Monash University last Saturday at Epsom. In a see-sawing first half that saw plenty of points, the Miners led at the break by three points, 22-19. It was a dominant second half from Bendigo, who scored 27 unanswered points to record a 49-19 victory. The Miners’ attack was spearheaded by winger Jeremy Lingen who was unstoppable with four tries and looked dangerous every time he touched the ball. Centre Phil Keech scored three tries and full back Ryan

Spedding added two tries to keep the scoreboard ticking. Bendigo’s goal kicking was the only downside to the performance, with three players trying their hand at shots at goal and landing just two from 10 attempts combined. The bonus point win moves Bendigo into fourth place on the competition standings ahead of a competition bye week this week. The Miners next match is on Saturday, June 15 when they take on the Croydon Griffins on the road. Scorers: Lingen 4, Keech 3, Spedding 2 tries; McDonald, Keech goals.

Northwest too strong for Knox IT was a triumphant weekend for Northwest Lightning’s women’s hockey teams, who both picked up wins against Knox. The sides had to overcome some adversity early on, with a bus breakdown, but team mechanics ensured they were back on the road in quick time. The Victoria League 1 women opened the day with a 3-1 win. Shanaye Alexander was fantastic on debut, finishing with one goal and making damaging passes all day. The side had plenty of chances to capitalise, but were not able to convert each attack. Laura Errey put in a strong performance up front, while Maddy White looked to be back to full speed after recovering from a knee complaint. The team has now put together consecutive wins ahead of a mid-season break for the Country Championships. The Victoria League 1 Reserves team produced its sixth win on the trot thanks to outstanding ball movement in a 2-1 win. International recruit Carla Garcia Morato is settling into the team, linking up with Grace Bales and Marlow Choi-Hatcher. Best of luck to all of the players competing in this weekend’s Victoria Country Championships. The next matches for the Northwest Lightning are against Monash University at Ashley Street Hockey Complex, Ironbark on Saturday, June 15.

Roos keep Bloods at bay KANGAROO Flat recorded a much needed win in last Sunday’s enthralling Bendigo Football Netball League indigenous round clash with South Bendigo. Both sides were looking for their second win as they took to the hallowed Queen Elizabeth Oval for a match which saw the Roos in front all day. Early in the vital third quarter,

the visitors edged their way to a 20-point lead, but a determined South Bendigo refused to surrender and at three-quarter time the match was still up for grabs. For the winners, Matt Boland kicked five majors and Matt Clifford three, as the Flat stopped the clock to record a 15.7 (97) to 12.13 (85). Kaiden Antonowicz kicked six

goals for the Bloods. In other round seven results, Sandhurst scored a nail biting win over Golden Square, Strath thrashed Castlemaine with Lachlan Sharp booting 14 goals, Gisborne proved too strong for Eaglehawk at Canterbury Park, and Maryborough won over Kyneton at Princes Park. This weekend, Kyneton hosts

Eaglehawk, competition heavyweights Strathfieldsaye play South Bendigo at Triple M Park, cellar dwellers Castlemaine are at home to Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat will look to make it two wins in a row when it takes on Maryborough at Bendigo Mazda Oval, and Gisborne will play Sandhurst at Gardiner Reserve in what looks to be the match of the day.

Tayla earns Ashes tilt

By SAM KANE

BENDIGO’S Tayla Vlaeminck will live out a childhood dream next month after being named as part of Australia’s Ashes title defence squad to tour England. Her selection in the strong 14-women side caps off a stellar 12 months for the 20-year-old, which included her international debut in South Africa as well as playing a key role in Australia’s ICC T20 World Cup winning team in the West Indies last November. Speaking to the Bendigo Weekly in the midst of a heavy Ashes training schedule, Vlaeminck said her selection in the team was something she’d been working hard to achieve.

Thunder no match for Magpies

“It was in the back of my mind every session” “It was in the back of my mind every session, to get on the plane with the girls to hopefully play in the Ashes series,” she said. “The Ashes are something you grew up watching as a kid, and you watch the boys run in and bowl in test matches, and to be able to do something like that would be pretty cool. “The girls retained the Ashes last time, so hopefully we can bring it back on the plane with us.” The former Strathdale-Maristian is becoming known internationally for her lightning quick bowling speed, which she hopes to capitalise on if rewarded with game time in England. Continued Page 26

THE Bendigo Thunder hosted Montmorency at Weeroona Oval on Sunday in Round Two of the Northern Football League. The Thunder are in a rebuilding

phase, fielding a less experienced side in this year’s competition which proved not up to scratch against the Magpies. Brianna Birt kicked both the home side’s goals, with the Thunder eventu-

ally going down 2.1 13 to Montmorency’s 11.14 80. The Thunder’s next game is against the Victoria University Western Spurs on Sunday, June 16.
