Bendigo loses a little innocence BENDIGO awoke to shocking news on Tuesday morning, learning of the death of well-liked Bendigo newsagent Garry Angus. Mr Angus’ wife, Jenny, found her 49-year-old husband dead in his Pall Mall business the night before. On Wednesday, 46-year-old Antony John Duguid was charged with Mr Angus’ murder.

CENTRAL Victoria will boom on the back of the introduction of a carbon tax in Australia, according to a prominent Bendigo company director. “The carbon tax has already had a positive impact on what we’re doing,” Australian Turntable Company and Eco Villages Worldwide director Paul Chapman said.

Carbon tax a golden opportunity

“Businesses like ours, which have already taken the right steps, which are already set up to do it, are able to capitalise on the new business model which is all around the world. “Bendigo has the extraordinary opportunity to capitalise on globalisation.” Mr Chapman’s Eco Villages Worldwide, a subsidiary of ATC, designs and manufactures “sustainable” housing.

Based in Kangaroo Flat, the company produces low-energy modular housing, designed to respond to the increasing worldwide demand in remote or disaster-hit ares, as well as in fast-growing urban areas. The company manufactures modular buildings for Australia, but exports its expertise to projects across the world. “From a business perspective, the

demand is there,” Mr Chapman said. “From a manufacturing perspective, the carbon tax is not good for costs, but from a marketing perspective, because we are making buildings that reduce energy use, it’s good for us. “In the past few months in particular, our inquiries have been up a lot.” Mr Chapman began in hospital-

ity before setting up the Australian Turntable Company with his family. He is a member of the Bendigo Inventor Awards committee, and is a strong advocate for Bendigo as an innovation hub. He said developments in Bendigo, such as the building of the new hospital, will open up more opportunities for green-technology businesses in the region. “I am finding that the mindset (about Bendigo) has changed,” he said. “Now we’re ‘not far from Melbourne’, and ‘a good place to be’.”
