In 2013, Lisa Chesters became the first female Member for Bendigo. The election campaign, fought over the entire year, saw the city set itself up for future prosperity.

Tears flowed on March 10 when Bernie, and daughter Kristi, held the WNBL championship trophy above their heads. What’s more, the city’s first national sporting championship was won at the Bendigo Stadium.

Regina stepped in where others feared in 2013, advocating strongly for the return of abortion services to Bendigo. She led the community push that saw the service returned after a two-year absence and a lot of powerful and heated opposition.

In 2012, Craig Niemann faced a volatile new council, whose first order of business was to undertake an independent review into the way council was run. The report showed things were going swimmingly, and criticised those who criticised council.

Karen’s hard work and determination in 2013 has seen a number of exclusive exhibitions held or announced, and one of the most important renovations in the gallery’s history almost completed.

Ending the nightmare IN late 2012, the Bendigo Weekly revealed Bendigo Health’s abortion clinic had been unavailable for almost a year because no local doctor would take it on. As the only clinic in town, vulnerable women were being forced to travel to Melbourne for treatment, something at last one patient called “an emotional nightmare. Bendigo Health was the only major public hospital in Victoria not to offer a counselling and abortion service, a gap described by executive director of Surgical Services Glenis Beaumont as a “deficit. In early 2013, a consultant who had agreed to staff the clinic lasted only half a day in the role, forced out by anti-abortion campaigners. That resulted in REGINA CLARKE taking a stand, leading the campaign to reopen the clinic, and taking on a very powerful lobby group.

The well-known doctor called on Bendigo Health to ask local GPs to staff the clinic, something she said she herself would be prepared to do. “A Choices Clinic which can provide terminations is a service that is needed by the young women of this city, she said. “I see many young women who have unplanned pregnancies. “Unfortunately they don’t have the financial or emotional resources to go to Melbourne and seek out help down there. “We see the distressing impact of the lack of a Choices Clinic and yet we are not involved in any of the discussions to re-open one here in Bendigo. In June, Bendigo Health responded, opening dialogue with local medical professionals to help solve the impasse. In August, the clinic reopened, almost two years after it closed.

THE preselection of LISA CHESTERS as the Labor candidate for the federal seat of Bendigo took most locals by surprise. Pundits were backing local solicitor Greg Westbrook to get the nod, but the backing of retiring member Steve Gibbons saw Lisa get over the line. It wouldn’t be the first time Lisa surprised Bendigo over the next year. In February, Lisa took on the hottest topic in the election – asylum seekers. She told the Bendigo Weekly she disagreed with Labor’s off-shore processing policy, calling for all asylum seekers to be processed on-shore.

Despite strong attacks from senior Liberals, and some local criticism, Lisa stuck to her guns, taking her views to the election. Despite a strong swing against her, Lisa became Bendigo’s first female Member for Bendigo, an achievement in itself. Her strong advocacy for climate change, asylum seekers and education funding have cemented these issues as important ones for locals. The strong election campaign between her and the Liberals’ Greg Bickley thrust Bendigo onto the national stage yet again, and resulted in a number of promises that will see the city prosper well into the future.

ON October 13, 2012, Bendigo Spirit coach BERNIE HARROWER and basketball legend daughter Kristi were driving home from their team’s round two 70-58 victory over the Dandenong Rangers. On the phone to his wife, Janice, Bernie told her the Spirit would make the grand final. It was a bold claim, and one that caused Kristi to tell her dad to “pull his head in. Five months later, on March 10, 2013, the pair was sharing more than a car ride, they were sharing the weight of the WNBL Championship trophy. Written off most of the year, despite finishing top, the Spirit had delivered Bendigo

its first national sporting title. To top it off, the semi and grand finals were played at home, with almost 3000 locals squeezing into the Bendigo Stadium. Bendigo is a basketballmad city, so the euphoria of the win was felt for the rest of the year. When the 201314 season tipped off in October, Bernie had managed to strengthen the team even more. Today, they sit three games clear at the top of the WNBL, with four players in Opals contention, and a couple more on the cusp. Favourites to deliver backto-back titles, 2013 looks like a legacy year for Bernie and, because of him, Bendigo basketball.

SIX of the BEST Education in a much stronger position

Dale Pearce, Bendigo Senior Secondary College principal

DALE PEARCE is not your average school principal. It could easily be argued that running Australia’s largest senior secondary college is a big enough job in itself, but not for Dale. His passion for his students and education shone out in 2013. As well as producing students who recorded the city’s top two ATAR scores, the school has excelled in many sport, community and leadership areas. However, it is outside the classroom that makes Dale stand out. His advocacy for the establishment of the Ulumbarra Theatre resulted in construction of the $26

million project beginning in 2013, with an opening date in 2015. During the 2013 election campaign, education was a major issue. He campaigned strongly for the Labor Party’s Gonski reforms, often criticising the State Government’s stance on the plan. When the Liberal Party won federally and Education Minister Christopher Pyne started back-tracking on funding promises, Dale came into his own. Using his active twitter account and blog, he wasn’t backwards in coming forwards. “I’d always thought Christopher Pyne arrogant but a good politician.

Seems I was only partly right,” one tweet said. Another referred to Mr Pyne’s “smugness”, and another attacked the Liberal and National parties. “At least LNP is consistent across portfolios. Dogma is de rigeur and knowledge is ignored”. He was also critical of schools who market themselves using VCE results. “VCE results belong to the students, NOT the school and should not be appropriated for advertising purposes,” he tweeted. All in all, Dale’s actions in 2013 have left Bendigo, and education in general, in a much stronger position.

Building on a string of successes AFTER attracting 300,00 people to the gallery last year, one could be forgiven for thinking KAREN QUINLAN would take things quietly. Not so. Karen’s hard work and determination in 2013 has seen a number of exclusive exhibitions held or announced, and one of the most important renovations in the gallery’s history almost completed. Shadowlife and Modern Love, both BAG exclusive exhibitions, began their run in 2013. Two major exhibitions were also secured in 2013.

About 100 works from the Royal Academy of Arts in London will be exhibited exclusively in the gallery from March this year, showcasing the works of JMW Turner, Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, John Singer Sargent, Henry Fuseli, John Everett Millais , John William Waterhouse and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Last year also saw another coup announced, with The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece to tour exclusively from the British Museum this year. The exhibition will give audiences the rare opportunity

to see more than 100 historical works including the impressive Discobolus; an iconic marble statue of a discus thrower from the second century AD. With all this going on, Karen’s stewardship of the expansion has also been impressive. The redevelopment will include a stunning park gallery, a multi-purpose pavilion, a new loading dock and a large underground storage area. Although it was initially scheduled to be completed last month, it should be ready to go early this year.

Clean bill of health earned

Craig Niemann, Greater Bendigo council chief executive officer

WHEN the Greater Bendigo council election results finally became known on the evening of October 28, 2012, chief executive officer CRAIG NIEMANN must have raised an eyebrow or two. The majority of those elected had campaigned for an independent review of the way council was run, and some had campaigned strongly for cuts in the art and culture sectors, as well as staffing numbers. Ten months,$250,000 and a lot of detailed analysis later, the review revealed things were pretty good. It showed council was not overstaffed, labour costs were in line with other councils and revenue was less per capita than others. The report also criticised the behaviour of some of the councillors

who pushed for the review, as well as the constant carping and criticism of a “vocal minority”. In the end, the report gave council a pretty clean bill of health and ended, to an extent, any legitimacy of those criticising the way council was run and the amount of rates it charged. Last year was also a strong one for council as a whole. With the co-leadership for most of the year of former mayor Lisa Ruffell, Craig steered council and the city into a strong position in 2013. Poignantly, 2013 will be remembered as the year of growth for the city’s cultural assets, with work on the $9 million redevelopment of the library, the new $26m theatre and the $8.4m art gallery expansion starting.

PARK HORROR: Emergency workers at the scene of the incident which killed a girl and seriously injured her mother. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Appeal launched GREATER Bendigo council has reassured locals the city’s parks and gardens are safe after a four year old girl was killed by a falling tree branch in Rosalind Park on Monday. Patiya May and her mother, Kristy Thomson, were both struck by the tree as they walked through the park at 5.15pm. Kristy suffered spinal and head injuries. Council cut down the remainder of the grey box eucalypt near the poppet head on Tuesday morning, concerned the branch loss would make it unstable. Council acting chief executive officer Stan Liacos said the tree was inspected on September 19, and it showed no outward signs of “concern”. “We regularly monitor all trees in all our prominent parks,” he said. “People should be assured our parks are clean, safe and in impeccable condition.” After a number of unwanted approaches by the media, the family have asked for privacy. Locals have taken to facebook and twitter to express their grief and horror at the accident, and council cancelled New Year’s Eve

can to help the family, as there are quite a few expenses to cover.” Bendigo Police Acting Inspector Paul Gardiner said there were other children in the park at the time of the incident. “A number of our members who attended the scene… have young children,” he said. “It does pull at everyone’s heartstrings, and so it should. “This is a very sad loss for our

community and for the families involved. “These are a particularly sad set of circumstances.” Police and emergency services who attended the scene are being offered counselling. Mr Liacos said police had contacted the family on council’s behalf to convey their condolences. “This is a very close community, this is a regional environment,” he said. “In a place like Bendigo, that family will be known by many people.”

The State Government will fund hospitals to provide an extra 2200 operations early thisyear in the third stage of a $101 million elective surgery initiative to tackle waiting times. Patients at Bendigo Health Care Group are benefiting from the initiatives, with $1.842 million in extra funding through the three stages of the initiative. The Competitive Elective Surgery Funding Initiative has provided a $15 million pool of funding for Stage 3, which enables public and private hospitals to make contestable bids to boost the number of public patients receiving elective surgery, particularly during the quieter months.

Time for lift off

PLAY TIME: The Bendigo Botanic Gardens has even more to offer.

A garden wonderland

HOT STUFF: James Pemberton runs a science class at the Bendigo Discovery Centre. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN THE Discovery Science and Technology Centre has promised an out-of-this-world experience these school holidays. The team is all set to present explosive new science and planetarium shows, launch rockets and create flying machines to test in wind tunnels. You need to get in early to save your seat at Discovery Mission Control, for the The Lift off! Science Show. “Superheroes, helicopters and rockets; we’ll have it all,” said Discovery Centre manager David Holmes said.

1

“How hard can it be? After all, it’s not rocket science, right?” The Lift off! Science Show is included within Discovery general admission and will be taking place at noon and 2pm daily. Visitors can also pull up a bean bag in the Bendigo Planetarium and celebrate the wonders of space travel during the new show, What goes up must come down! If you’ve never experienced a space shuttle launch, seen the International Space Station and the space shuttle Endeav-

our orbit the Earth together, or witnessed a Space Shuttle landing, then this show should definitely be on your must see list. The show will be taking place at 11.30am, 12.30pm and 1.30pm daily and is included within Discovery general admission. “We will also have daily water rocket launches and visitors can build their own flying machines and test them in our wind tunnels,” Mr Holmes said. For more information about Discovery’s school holiday program please visit www.discovery. asn.au or phone 5444 4400.

THERE is something exciting in the Bendigo Botanic Gardens. An enchanting new play space is inspired by 19th century gardens and Lewis Carroll’s popular children’s book Alice in Wonderland and is open now. Council Engineering and Public Space manager Brett Martini said the play space is a fantastic addition to Bendigo’s oldest public gardens.

“The new play space features a series of garden rooms enclosed by hedges and encourages children to explore and play imaginatively,” he said. “In the Secret Garden, children will discover treasures such as the hidden mirror and special child-size mushroom table and chairs. “On the Alice in Wonderland-inspired roly-poly lawn children can play croquet

or simply enjoy rolling around on the grassy slopes.” Mr Martini said children can also climb to the top of the fort and look over the gardens and pretend to be the king or queen in the oversize throne chair. The official launch of the play space will be held in February and local children will be invited to attend a special Alice in Wonderlandthemed picnic.

Fortuna on the register EARLY DAYS: Owner Paul banks has pushed ahead with the job of restoring Fortuna Villa. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Villa a work in progress The facelift of Fortuna Villa has begun. Owner Paul Banks said the conservatory, turret and veranda have been restored. “The villa has begun to receive a long awaited paint job and in conjunction with Haymes Paint, Provincial Constructions and Rapid Powder Coating the works are full steam ahead with the building being brought back to life in its original heritage colours,” he said. “We will be opening a café and shop also conducting tours first up; followed by a wedding venue in a year with long term intention of boutique hotel accom-

modation, works have begun in every way possible the guidelines are simple and we follow them. “We have revealed the conservatory now that we have 24hour, live-in maintenance and security. Restoration to the famous leadlight turret is complete and the remaining front repairs will take place in the new year. “We are also near completion of the Pompeii fountain and should have it fully sealed and all systems go before the end of the year”. In other Fortuna news, Greater Bendigo council has received two objections to the planing scheme amendment of the villa, one from

nearby residents and another from a member of the Friends of Fortuna Villa group. Mr Banks said the nearby residents wanted clarification on a few issues which will be resolved. “I think the information evening was useful, but some residents just needed clarification and explanation in writing,” he said. “Overall to only receive two submissions reassures me l am doing the right thing towards the villa and the people of Bendigo. “It’s always a shame to get any negative response, but I am avoiding a panel meeting which could see the villa come to a standstill

for up to two years, so it’s in my best interest to satisfy the two submissions. “The requests and concerns should be easily identified with further correspondence and if they did appear in front of panel they would most likely be overlooked, because we have completed everything within the guidelines. “The economics from my end of proceeding to a panel would be extreme and I would prefer that money be spent on the villa restoration”. If the public submissions are cleared, Fortuna will go to the February council meeting, ready for public access in 2014.

PLANS for Bendigo’s largest ever residential subdivision have taken another step. A State Government Independent Panel has approved the rezoning of the 183-hectare Forest Park Estate, at 244 Edwards Road, with minor changes. Under the plan, up to 1400 houses will be built on the site. The plan will now go back to the Greater Bendigo council for approval, before going to Planning Minister Matthew Guy for final approval. Council is expecting to vote on the plan early this year. Council approved the rezoning push in October, but the plans now have to go through a formal planning process. The development includes “medium density” and “compact” and features a series of walking and bike paths. It also abuts bushland and council has identified any potential fire risk as an important part of the approval process. Birchgrove Property is behind

Bendigo’s Fortuna Villa has been added to the Victorian Heritage Register. Fortuna is one of the largest private houses built in Victoria. Heritage Council of Victoria chairman Daryl Jackson said Fortuna’s grandeur reflected the strength of the gold rush. “Fortuna is an outstanding demonstration of the wealth and prosperity of Bendigo and Victoria during the Goldrush period,” he said. “Fortuna has a number of features which are rare in Victoria. It was rare for such a lavish house to be built so close to the industrial works that were source of the wealth that created it. “The survival of a 19th century villa estate, with a grand house surrounded by its original garden, is also unusual in an urban setting.” Fortuna was sold last year but its prominence and display of wealth highlight the importance of the Victorian Goldrush period. Central Victoria’s leading Personal Injuries Law Firm. SUBDIVISION: The Forest Park Estate will house 1400 homes. the Forest Park subdivision plan and spokesman Damien Tangey said the process has been a long one. “We first put this idea to council 10 years ago,” he said. “We are still party to a process, and there is no cause for celebration yet. “It is up to council to make their deliberations.” Last year, Mr Tangey said direct onsite investment is estimated to be more than $500 million and direct employment for about 150 people a year during its estimated 10-year construction phase.

“Up until completion in 2030, assessors have projected a $800 million injection into Bendigo’s Gross Regional Product as a direct result of Forest Park,” he said. “In terms of economic stimulus Forest Park’s flow-on effect will complement Bendigo’s new hospital development – as both projects significantly enhance the long-term economic prospects of our community. “Our proposal adopts a very transparent and thorough process. Community input is vital in order for the proposal to respond effectively to local needs.”

UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

Bendigo up close and personal THEY are iconic Bendigo items as you have never seen them before. With the aid of a microscope, photographer Andrew Perryman found more than he bargained for. Fortuna Villa gave an insight into the layers of paint used over the years, and the root life of its tile moss. The lively inhabitants of Lake Weeroona are feeling green after their star close up. A 1960s Talking Tram ticket showed its true colours as did some gold, and a 2011 Mandurang Valley shiraz added a new hue. Cr Rod Fyffe gamely shared his hair to round off the crop of images.

Books on move to new library

TENS of thousands of books, DVDs and equipment will be transferred to the new generation Bendigo library in Hargreaves Street in preparation for its opening later this month. Library services in central Bendigo will be unavailable until the doors of the redeveloped facility are opened to the public on January 28. Library items are not due back until January 28 and a book chute will be available at 202 Hargreaves Street throughout the closure period. Kangaroo Flat library will be open every day except public holidays.

Council Organisation Support director Marg Allan said she was looking forward to the new-generation library opening, saying it will be a fantastic facility for the whole community. “Alongside the contemporary and efficient library facilities with up-to-date technology, there is a range of community spaces for gatherings and events,” she said. “There will be a good opportunity to see what these spaces can offer when we hold a community celebration to officially mark the opening of the new generation Bendigo Library on February 8, from 10am to 2pm.” COMING ALONG: The library opening is planned for January 28.

New clinic the main aim CANCER patients will benefit from more timely treatment as Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Bendigo Health hope to build a new clinic. Patients suffering lung and oesophageal cancer have been able to access faster access to critical care reducing the wait between diagnosis and treatment. Bendigo Health and Peter Mac are considering the replication of the pilot multi-disciplinary model to establish a breast cancer centre in Bendigo. Peter Mac radiation oncologist Dr Tracie Gleisner said the pilot project gave people greater access to expert advice. “When radiation on-

cology, cancer medicine and cancer surgery work in isolation, patients can have appointments staggered across three different clinics, which can take up to six weeks to get through,” she said. “Whereas patients we see in the new multidisciplinary clinic can be receiving treatment within a week and a half of consultation.” Oswald Errington, 85, had a persistent cough that wouldn’t pass in March last year. “I didn’t think too much of it because working in drainage construction I’ve always had a cough,” he said. “But after my GP recommended an x-ray, which

was followed by a CT scan, dark spots on my upper left lung showed I had cancer.” Mr Errington felt assured about his treatment after speaking with the medical professionals at the clinic in Bendigo. “On paper, surgery seemed the way to go, but given my age, we agreed radiation was a better step to take,” he said. Dr Gleisner is pushing for the clinic, hoping for development early this year. “I have a dream that the multi-disciplinary clinic will expand and we will acquire a respiratory physician, specialist nurse and allied health professionals,” she said.

THREE state-of-the-art ultrasound machines have arrived at Bendigo Radiology. The first-for-Australia machines have just landed and Bendigo will become home to the latest Philips technology. The premium EPIQ ultrasound machines will improve the quality of each scan, faster and more accurate examinations. Patients will be assured of accurate and timely results. The machines, costed at $200,000 each, provide the latest technology and enable muscular skeletal work with precise imaging. Bendigo Radiology liaison and quality manager Megan Egan said the machines were critical to ensure quality patient care. “As the doctors become more aware of the technology, they request access to the much better equipment, she said. “The Philips machines were found to be the best type for the work conducted at the centres. The current machines will be moved to more regional centres with less technologically advanced ultrasound capabilities.

White Hills heritage should be saved I have just read your article titled “’Too good to be demolished and felt there was a need to correct a number of points in the article. Firstly the question of demolition is not being considered. What is before council is a proposed amendment to the planning scheme to apply a heritage overlay to the area. Such an overlay will not prevent the owners from applying for a permit to do anything in the future, including demolishing the building or sub-dividing. Amendment C203 does not propose any interior controls on the property and the owners will be free to modify the dwelling’s interior layout as they see fit. There are many examples of homes in Bendigo that are covered by heritage overlays where the property has been extended to provide additional space and approval for subdivision of the site has been granted. Inclusion within a heritage overlay will also allow the owner to apply for a heritage restoration loan from the Greater Bendigo council, an avenue of assistance generally denied to places not within an overlay. We need to keep things in perspective and factual. The adoption of planning amendment C203 will not take away any of the owners’ right to apply, through

the appropriate channels, to demolish, alter or subdivide their property. Nor will it prevent an owner, current or future, from the pleasure of restoring and living in a potentially beautiful home. The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) fully supports the council in the endorsement of Amendment C203. Dr Gary Hill, President, National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Bendigo Branch

Eftpos pushes a fundraiser I am writing to thank all Australians who pressed CHQ or SAV at the checkout in the lead up to Christmas to support the eftpos Giveback campaign. You have helped us to successfully achieve our target to donate $2 million to Diabetes Australia and Cancer Council, as well as an additional $40,000 to Camp Quality. The Giveback campaign is now in its third year, continuing a tradition of giving at Christmas. Since the campaign launched we have been able to give back more than $4 million to a selection of worthy Australian charities. Diabetes Australia will use the donation to develop a digital platform and mobile application that will assist more than a million Australians with the manage-

webcomments

ment of the disease. Cancer Council plan to use the donation to fund their Shade for Secondary School Grant Program across the country, and last but not least, Camp Quality will use the donation to help improve the quality of life for children living with cancer. By pressing CHQ and SAV, shoppers helped us donate to these worth causes. We were able to join forces to raise money and fight two of Australia’s most prevalent diseases – diabetes and skin cancer, and we couldn’t have done it without the help of the local community.  Bruce Mansfield, Managing Director, eftpos

CFA message heats up As summer heats up, local CFA volunteers have a simple message for everyone in this community – fire safety starts with you. Your local CFA volunteers are trained and experienced in fighting fires and dealing with other emergencies, and we will be there when you need us, but we want you to be ready too. Local people are not only the ones most affected if there is a major fire in this district, they are also the ones best placed to prevent and prepare for bushfires before they start. A crumb of friand Friday morning December 20 – Pedro & Pedro’s cappuccino, an orange and almond friand with fresh doublecream and a robust edition of the Bendigo Weekly spread wide on a scrubbed wooden table.

Apart from catching up on local news I was looking forward to reading detailed letters filled with fact-based rebuttals of the points I’d raised in my letter “Climate catastrophe luvvies in a tizz published in the previous week’s paper. I’d touched on October bushfires in NSW, the absurd Labor/Greens border protection policies, and an inferno which swept across Victoria 1939 . But alas nothing, unless Mr Ramsay’s petty words “Peter Wiseman not so wise were meant to be a rebuttal. If so he needs to concentrate harder – maybe making a list of talking points and dealing with them one-by-

one might help him develop some coherent thoughts. Amusingly Mr Ramsey’s blisteringly original play on words and my surname had Pedro’s staff exchanging concerned glances as they mistook my derisive laughter at his high-wit for a choking fit brought on by a crumb of friand travelling down the wrong pipe. Hopefully next week someone will demonstrate a bit of intellectual rigour and add some more adult points to the debate in place of the infantile commentary of the 20th – then we will all become better informed. Peter Wiseman, Mandurang

Building foundations eas that are important for Bendigo. Strong education, political, health, culture, sport and community leaders are important to us all. This year there is a clear pattern among the six, a quality of leadership Bendigo needs more of. Each of them are, in their own way, renegades. Bernie Harrower and Karen Quinlan are proof local leaders should not be restricted by geography or opportunity. Bernie has taken an underfunded, country Victorian basketball team and turned it into a national sporting force. Last season’s WNBL title was proof that being based in Bendigo doesn’t mean you can’t take on the rest of the country, and win. Karen is also in this mould. She has brought the world to Bendigo in the past few years, with blockbuster exhibitions. In 2013, as well as overseeing another strong year, she has masterminded the expansion of the gallery

to the point where it will soon be a world-class venue. Education and health are areas where innovation is always welcome, and Dale Pearce and Regina Clark know this. They are quick to promote the latest ideas, and often buck tradition. Regina has done this in the past with drug addicts, and her work in calling for the reopening of Bendigo’s abortion clinic was just as strong, and as important. Dale is also always willing to buck or criticise the trend, if it means doing what is best for his students or education in general. Lisa Chesters and Craig Niemann are two of our most important community and political leaders. Lisa’s admonition of her own party’s asylum-seeker policy saw her win a lot of friends, and votes, in Bendigo. Craig’s steady leadership and constant refusal to bend with political whims or pressure has seen the city benefit nationally.

FOR the second year in a row, the Weekly has named the six people we consider who have made the biggest impact on Bendigo. The only real criteria is that their work during the year has made Bendigo a better place, and given the city a boost to allow it to grow. We feel these six people – Dale Pearce, Lisa Chesters, Bernie Harrower, Regina Clark, Craig Niemann and Karen Quinlan – not only contributed significantly to the city in 2013, but laid a foundation for 2014 to be built on. There is no doubt there are others who have done their bit to make Bendigo’s case, or worked tirelessly for their community. They will be recognised in other ways. However, as far as the city itself goes, we believe these were our Six of the Best for 2013. While we didn’t set out to ensure an even gender spread, it has happened again this year. Our top six have excelled in ar-

Spare a thought for them all By MARIKA MCMAHON

THE great gift of social media is that celebrations and achievements can be instantly shared. The flipside is that the most intimate of moments can quickly become not only news but also something that seems incredibly personal to each of us. This hit our city of Bendigo hard when our newsfeed instantly filled when the unthinkable happened right in the middle of our town. In our beautiful Rosalind Park a life was lost, another physically injured and those who know them will never be the same again. It’s a park loved by all of us, many memories within it. Remembering struggling in the annual St Mary’s cross country run. A euphoric walk back through it in the 80s after having seen Charles and Di. Kids learning to scoot and ride. Many hours pounding the pavements in the hope of trimming down. This week another layer was added to its history. Nothing more horrific can be imagined than the death of a child. While

local social media filled with an outpouring of heartfelt sympathy for this little princess and her family, each expression of sorrow can also be a stab to the heart. For most there is a big sense of “thank God it’s not us”. For some of us though, it’s another reminder of the pain that will never go away, the trauma of a child that died too early. Somewhere, today there is a fam-

and her family. Don’t just think of all of us who have experienced that loss. All over Bendigo there are emergency service staff who will forever remember those moments in Rosi Park. A very experienced ambo once told me how he could still picture the face of every child he had ever treated who died. I think regularly about the ambos and police who came to our home the

A life was lost, another physically injured and those who know them will never be the same ily that is numb, a child gone and a mother fighting her own battles. All who know them will have begun the battle of trying to deal with the “what ifs”. The “if onlys”. While the photos and videos we saw may have made vivid what happened so close to home in our park, for many they will have raised far too many memories of the time the flashing lights turned up for their child and despite super-human efforts could not save them. But don’t just think of this child

night Thommy died (and we share a silent nod when we bump into each other in coffee queues). I worry about the impact on all who treated her. We spare a thought for all impacted by Monday’s events and for all who know sadness. Yet again, the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels. Marika McMahon is a Bendigo lawyer and mother of three. Her youngest child, Thomasina, died in 2012, aged seven months.

Travel tricks W

ITH some cracking weather this summer, hopefully you are getting to hit the beach or river for some time away. There’s some local food produce you need to make sure you pack for the trip away, whether that is to show off Central Victoria to friends and family or to make sure you don’t miss home too much. We’ve been lucky enough to sneak in some time at the beach already so my list has been finely tuned, although it is aimed at comfortable holidaying. Friends are threatening to get me camping this summer to demonstrate what they promise is gourmet camping food, so if I survive without electric toothbrush and hair straightener I may have more ideas to share later. So what are the must take locals for holidaying where there are innerspring mattresses?

You already know from my Christmas columns what a great fan I am of a leg of ham. A leg of ham is not just for Christmas but is also a great addition to a holiday fridge. Rather than battling the queues at an over-priced holiday destination supermarket, you’ll have a supply of sandwich fillings for that post morning swim. Another few locals that should make it into the boot are the Lets Get Saucy caramelised onions and beetroot relish available from Bendigo Wholefoods. Great to add to a roll for lunch or they can turn a sausage barbie easily into something special. It might be stretching the “local definition but another item I would have as a must pack is some Murray River Salt Flakes, stocked at all of our great foodie shops. That little bit of old salt in a

Q. What is Burrata? A. Burrata which means buttered

in Italian is a rich, creamy and soft fresh cheese from southern Italy. Cows milk mozzarella is stretched to make a small pouch which is then filled with rich cream and put into a brine. The balls then set just enough that when cut will fantastically ooze. This rich almost buttery like fresh cheese is great this time of year with a tomato salad or slices of peach and parma ham.

Q. What are some tips to make a great risotto? A. I love making and eating ri-

rental house just doesn’t add the zing to meals while away. I’m a big fan of making sure you can throw together a platter of yumminess to have with predinner drinks on holidays. A great local addition to that are the scrummy Axedale olives you can pick up at Edwards Greengrocers. With a few varieties of marinated flavours they are great to nibble on – and not too bad for

the New Year’s healthy eating resolutions. The final thing to pack: make sure on the way out of town you call in to see Corey and the team at Brewhouse, grab your takeaways for the first part of the trip and a bag of beans. It will make time away a little bit easier because there’s nothing like a holiday to remind you how blessed we are for coffee in Bendigo.

Christmas fare’s repeat performance Transform leftover turkey and ham into a delicious holiday dish Ingredients: 30g unsalted butter Âź cup plain flour 1 cup chicken stock Âź cup dry white wine ½ cup thickened cream 2 cups chopped cooked turkey ½ cup (90g) chopped leg ham 10g dried porcini mushrooms soaked in boiling water for 10 minutes, chopped 2 tbs chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 tbs chopped chives 2 spring onions, finely chopped 375g block frozen puff pastry, thawed 1 egg yolk, beaten Cranberry sauce, to serve

Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat. Add flour and cook, stirring constantly, for one minute or until mixture bubbles. Add chicken stock and wine, cook for a further two to three minutes, whisking to remove any lumps. Add the thickened cream and cook for a further minute or until the mixture boils and thickens. Season to taste, then stir in the turkey, ham, chopped porcini, parsley, chives and spring onion. Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely. Meanwhile, roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to form a 30cm x 33cm rectangle. Cut in half lengthways to give two 15cm-wide pieces. Place one pastry sheet on the lined baking tray and spread with the cooled turkey mixture, leaving a 2cm border.

sotto. It is one of the most simple things to cook but can easily go wrong. Use good ingredients – so a good flavorsome stock and good rice, I use the Ferron brand and their Vialone Nano rice, this can be found at good food stores. Time yourself – once you have sautÊed your diced vegetables and toasted the rice and are ready to add your liquids it should always take about 17 minutes to then cook. Resting – I always finish the risotto by stirring in a knob of butter and olive oil while its off the heat, then I always let it rest for a minute or two before serving. Serve on a warm plate and eat from the outside in.

Q. What are some different ways to cook oysters? A. Apart from the typical

Fold remaining sheet of pastry in half lengthways and use a sharp knife to make cuts in the folded side, about 1cm apart and leaving a 2cm border on the unfolded side. Carefully open the pastry back out and place over the filling, pressing the edges to seal. Trim the edges if necessary, then brush all over with the beaten egg. Bake the pie for 25-30 minutes until puffed and golden. Slice the pie and serve with cranberry sauce. - Recipe by Valli Little

Kilpatrick oyster there are lots of other great ways of serving cooked oysters. Make a zesty breadcrumb mix with fresh crumbs, grated horseradish, lemon zest and chopped chives, generously sprinkle this over the oysters and bake until golden brown. You can poach the actual oyster quickly in champagne then put back in the shell and cover with hollandaise sauce. Or simply beer batter and fry then serve with tartar and lemon.

Trouble brewing

Dear Dotty Thanks goodness Christmas is over. I must have eaten four kilograms of chocolate. I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t even like chocolate. Hector, Castlemaine

The brave few who returned after Christmas were not prepared for calamity

Dear Hector I am terribly concerned for you. How can you not like chocolate. It is life itself and can brighten any day. I have it with morning coffee and afternoon tea. There is nothing finer than a square or two before bed. Dear Dotty Why does everyone make such a fuss about the new year. I think it’s much the same as any other day. Elaine, Kangaroo Flat

T

HIS is a first-world problem I admit. A few of us staggered in on Monday after the Christmas break and calamity ruled. The coffee pod machine was still broken and there was only old milk in the fridge. What’s more the handy bakery out front was still closed so the brave few faced a day of having to head further afield for their coffee fix. Cycling Sabrina was seen prising open a pod of coffee eager to drag out the contents within. Such desperation was showing on her face, her caffeine need was obviously great. The foil lid collapsed under her concerted attack, and soon her grimace was replaced with a smile with the promise of coffee. By 9am there were a few anxious staffers strutting around. A colleague asked politely if I would do a coffee run, handing me a $5 note. Not a problem.

I had to buy milk while I was out, it was quite an outing. Only a few caught on to the fact I was heading out, and I went to a drive-through on Napier Street with a limited order. This was a whole new experience for me, but I think I passed it off without much trouble. Of course, driving back to work was fraught, the coffee toppled over on one of my turns, the carry tray failed miserably, and I was forced to stop and mop. No doubt by the end of a hot day the car will smell like a

coffee bar using off milk. Not that I know of one in Bendigo (Best say that, don’t want to offend). Perhaps I should step in here and mention I didn’t buy a coffee for myself, I had just had a cup of tea. This of course highlights the kind of guy I am. Selflessly heading out for the sustenance of others. As I handed back change my colleague queried his cash. “I gave you a $10, he said with practised ease. He is one of those cycling types too, where every ride is followed by a coffee. Almost

an addict, so he no doubt stings all of his fellow riders in a similar way. Or maybe just the non-cyclists. The contents of my wallet showed him to be wrong, but how do you argue? I had no real proof and I guess it was only $5, so he’s welcome to it, just like me shouting him a coffee really which I have no objection to. The lengths these addicts will go to to get their fix is disturbing though, so please Mr coffee machine fixer, hurry... It’s starting to impact on the workplace. twitter: @stevekendall1

Dear Elaine Life is what you make it I find. If you treat it like any other day, then it will be. Why not ice up the champagne, find a new man and party until dawn. That way you’ll make the most of the night. On the other hand be a misery and stay at home. Dear Dotty I have recently come into a considerable sum of money and would like a holiday. What do you suggest? Alan, address withheld Dear Alan I note you have hidden your address. Very sensible indeed. As for the holiday, I can’t look beyond Bears La-

Cruises seem to be the rage but I always fear being trapped with a ship full of people I don’t like and having no escape apart from over the side. That’s not going to happen in Bears Lagoon. Dear Dotty I married a very passionate man. At one time it was great, but now we are in our seventies I am finding it all a bit much. Do you have any suggestions to cool his ardour? Blanche, Bendigo Dear Blanche There are many who would love to be in your situation, but I imagine a similar number who feel for you. I assume you have tried the headache excuse? Traded into success M

unicipal representatives in the form of councillors dominated the Welcome Committee for the officers and sailors of the Great White Fleet. Ambrose Dunstan is another person who served on this committee in 1908. There was considerable excitement generated by the news that some of fleet’s representatives were to visit a few selected country areas which included Bendigo. Mr Dunstan could almost be regarded as the royalty of Long Gully, then one of the most important mining areas of the Bendigo goldfield. The Dunstan family was very large even by Victorian standards. This family was Cornish through and through. His father was also called Ambrose and his mother was Elizabeth, nee Dabb, our subject had been born at Collingwood in 1855. The family moved to Bendigo in 1870. Young Mr Dunstan began work in a provisional merchant’s store, he was quick to learn and had a talent for sales along with excellent customer relations he worked his way up until he became a joint owner of the business. On the death of the senior partner, Mr Dunstan bought the deceased’s share of the business and from then on he could develop the enterprise entirely to his own ideas. The business prospered, the list of the tradable lines was impressive, groceries, hay and corn, dairy produce, china, glass-

ware, earthenware, footwear, oil, varnish, paint, kerosene to name just some. He also began investing in other enterprises and businesses, including some of the gold mines. As the prosperity of his business interests grew he was then in a financial position to devote himself to a large number of organisations which benefited the community. Apart from being elected to the Bendigo City Council, he was on the board of the Bendigo Hospital, becoming treasurer upon the retirement of SH McGowan. He served actively on the Country Hospital Association, on the board of management of the Benevolent Asylum (Anne Caudle Centre). Mr Dunstan was a Justice of the Peace and regularly sat in court, also he became an assistant coroner. He served on the committee of the Bendigo Agricultural Society, being vice president for many years. As a member of the Zenith Masonic Lodge, he rose to the rank of grand master and served in that capacity in 1904. Another of his involvements was in the Australian Natives Association (ANA) being president in 1891-1892 and additionally was a director of the Sandhurst Trustees. The list of his involvements would be far from complete without mentioning his support for the Long Gully Fire Brigade, also the Hopetoun Band and the

Most importantly, Mr Dunstan was able to relate to all sections of the community no matter how humble an individual’s circumstances, this being one of his most endearing attributes. In 1883 at Collingwood he married 20-year-old Ellen Roberts, she had been born in Bendigo. The Dunstan couple were to have five children, who went on to do well in various professional capacities. During 1904-05 Mr Dunstan was mayor and again in 1918-19,

he and his wife Ellen set a high standard of service to the community as mayor and mayoress respectively. Ellen Dunstan died aged 58 having suffered a cerebral haemorrhage on May 26, 1922 at their spacious home in Creeth Street close to Eaglehawk Road. Ellen’s demise had a powerful effect on the devoted Mr Dunstan. Even in his retirement from business in 1921 the interest in charitable and community institutions continued. heRE are many treasures in the Bendigo RSL museum, and one of the most unusual is a simple plywood cabinet, made with obvious skill and care. This humble piece of furniture was made by Italian prisoners of war at one of the many World War II POW and internment camps built on the stony sheep paddocks outside Rushworth, just down from what is now the Midland Highway. Numerous camps housed Italian and German prisoners of war, as well as civilians classified as enemy aliens. Many of these prisoners and internees were highly skilled, and included academics, painters, sculptors, tradesmen and professionals, many of which would become important figures in post-war Australia. As well as working on local farms, they kept themselves occupied in classrooms and workshops. They produced craft, clothes and household items from scrap materials for barter or sale. The camps disappeared long ago, but the simplicity and economy of this cabinet remains of lasting value. - Peter Thompson.

Spirit ready for the run By JOEL PETERSON

BENDIGO Spirit coach Bernie Harrower says the Christmas break will have done this side the world of good, as it prepares to enter the second half of the WNBL season in a dominant position on top of the table. Bendigo sits three games clear of second-placed Dandenong with a 13-1 record, having not been defeated since the first game of the season against Townsville. A fatigued Spirit side went into the break after playing only six of the first 14 games of the season at home, and Harrower says the team is ready to attack a tough road-home double against Canberra and Melbourne which begins tonight. “The girls really enjoyed the break, when you look at it we’ve played six of our first 14 games on the road so far so that takes a lot out of you, Harrower said. “They enjoyed the time off but were eager to get into training when we came back on Sunday which was a pleasing sign, and I’m sure they’ll be ready to go this weekend. Canberra has arguably under-performed this season and face a tough task to get themselves back into the finals mix, but Melbourne sits in third place and took it right up to

Bendigo last time the two sides met. The Spirit prevailed by two points in a scrappy encounter in round 10, and their matchup this weekend promises to be just as entertaining. “Anytime you come up against the top side you’re fired up and you want to make a good account of yourself, Harrower, who finished second in coach of the month voting for December behind Melbourne’s Guy Molloy, said. Canberra is coming off a poor loss before Christmas, so won’t be short on motivation, and Melbourne hasn’t played since the middle of December, so they will be really fresh. “Melbourne are a good side, they play physical and like us are defensively orientated, but I’d like to think our depth will allow us to overcome that and fully use our rotations. The Spirit has played well enough so far to give themselves a solid buffer atop the table, but Harrower is under no illusions that the post-Christmas stretch will be vital in deciding how far the team can go in search of back-to-back titles. “I have always said that this is the business end of the season, and you really need to be on top of your game at this time of year, he said. “We can’t take anything for

granted, and we can’t rest on our pre-Christmas form because it doesn’t mean anything now. “It’s all about how we

position ourselves going into the finals, and that means we need to be up and about because everybody is gunning for us.

Atkinson joins the Braves

IMPORT: Zack Atkinson.

Athletes flock to the Masters

THE Bendigo Bank Braves have moved a step closer to completing their roster for the 2014 South East Australian Basketball League season, signing import Zack Atkinson. Atkinson has played in the New Zealand National Basketball League with the Waikato Pistons, averaging 15 points and 12 rebounds in the 2013 season. Standing at 206cm,

Atkinson will fill a much-needed role in ther Braves’ frontcourt. Atkinson was born in South Carolina and played his college basketball for UC Irvine. Atkinson has built a reputation on being an excellent rebounder and an extraordinary athlete, and promises to light up the crowd at the Bendigo Stadium with many highlight dunks.

Happy New Year! Call into Majors for all your bikes, trikes and much more!

“It’s exciting to have our first import on board. Zack is a tremendous athlete and a high-level rebounder, Braves coach Ben Harvey said. “He comes highly recommended from his past coaches for both his on-court ability and his community leadership. The Braves are now only one more import off finalising their roster for the 2014 season.

“Out of that field, 17 are world champions from last year’s World Masters Games in Brazil, five are world record holders, and two have been voted world masters athlete of the year. The decathalon and heptathlon events will kick the competion off on Saturday, with a 10km walk taking in Rosalind Park on Sunday morning before the event’s opening ceremony. All events, the majority of which are held at the La Trobe University Bendigo Athletics Complex, are free for spectators. “The opening ceremony will be good, we’ve got members of the Bendigo Chinese Association performing along with the formalities that go along with an event such as that, Hicks said. “We’ve got some junior athletes involved in the multi-events as well which will be great to see. The halfmarathon on the last Sunday will also be a great event in the CBD to mark as a celebration of the championships. The walk and half marathon events in the CBD have been billed as the marquee events on the program of the championships, with Hicks saying that the courses are as good as any he has seen. “The courses for the walk and half marathon are excellent, and are as good as any in the world through the CBD, Hicks said. “They will both be great events, and are a great chance for people to come and see what these athletes are capable of. “The cross country out at the Epsom Racecourse is always a good day out as well, especially on a hot day, and everyone involved with the games is looking forward to that. With athletes coming from across Australian and the world to participate in the games, Hicks, who is competing in the games himself, encouraged spectators to get involved in the games. “We’re definitely encouraging as many people as possible to come down to the events and see what it’s all about, he said. “There are some pretty impressive athletes here, and the things they are capable of are great to watch. “All in all, it should be a great nine days of competition, and we’re looking forward to getting it under way.

ATHLETES are expected to flock to Bendigo in their hundreds over the next week, as the 2014 Oceania Masters Athletics Championships are held. More than 500 athletes will compete across the nine days of competition, beginning on Sat-

urday, January 4 and continuing through until Sunday, January 12. Months of preparation have gone into the event according to organiser Terry Hicks, with an extremely strong field lining up for the event. “We’ve had people working extremely hard to get everything up and ready. The weather is looking

good, and we’re confident that everything will stand up to the test,” he said. “We’re very happy with the field. We’ve got 500 masters athletes as well as 140 open-age athletes competing in the half-marathon on the last Saturday of the competition which is great.” Continued Page 26
