As it provides both privacy and relief from the sun, choose a place that’s open and not already shaded.

It’s also important to take into account the drainage of the site, and what lighting it receives. The perfect pergola should lead to a patio, pool or barbecue area – exactly where you’ll be spending your summer days. The size and design of your pergola will depend on your budget and whether you want to use it primarily in summer or all year-round. There are numerous options when it comes to building, including contracting

a trades-person, erecting a pergola kit or even building one yourself. Be aware that some structures require a building permit, so check your local council’s regulations. When it comes to shading materials there are also many options: simple battens, shade cloths, vines or climbers to add greenery, or decorative screens used as roofing.
