EIGHT council work sites located across the city’s central business district could be brought under the one roof for the first time as part of a proposal for a government jobs hub that could reinvigorate the heart of Bendigo. Planning to co-locate a raft of government agencies and council operations is well advanced, with a number of sites across the Bendigo central business district under consideration to host the proposed hub, including council’s main administration building on Lyttleton Terrace. As well as delivering major efficiencies to council and to other potential tenants of the government complex, the City of Greater Bendigo expects the hub would help stimulate and rejuvenate the CBD and the region’s broader economy. The Bendigo Weekly understands planning for new and improved court facilities in Bendigo is also well advanced, with a number of sites identified, including the current historic Pall Mall site. But in a new development, a component of the high profile Bendigo Kangan TAFE site has also been earmarked as an alternative option. The state government allocated almost $4 million in this year’s budget for the “modernisation and expansion” of Bendigo’s courts, and to ‘’develop plans to address current and future demand pressures so cases can be heard sooner”.

The successful funding and delivery of the jobs hub and new courts has been identified as a key factor in addressing current demand and the future growth of Bendigo. Mayor Margaret O’Rourke yesterday confirmed the City of Greater Bendigo was a key player in plans for the government jobs hub, and encouraged the state and federal governments to help

We have a real opportunity to have more jobs here maintain the city’s momentum as it prepares for the next generation of major projects, opportunities and growth. “We are always casting our minds forward and looking towards our city being one with a population of 200,000 and jobs are central to the city’s growth,” she said. “We have a real opportunity to have more jobs here, and we just can’t sit back and wait.” Cr O’Rourke said the 2013 independent review of council’s operations, which she was a part of, had highlighted inefficiencies within council, and bringing all of council’s relevant operations under the one roof as part of this proposal was being explored.

Flood Eye data removed

AS it fixes errors, a state government department has removed 85 per cent of the data it had published online for the public to use as information about Bendigo’s flood plain. In late July the North Central Catchment Management Authority removed all but the information pertaining to a one-in100-year flood as part of what it describes as a software issue. Previously, it had included the estimated water levels for a flood every 200 years, 50 years, 20 years, 10 years and five years. The information is published through an online mapping tool called Flood Eye that shows in varying shades of blue the flood affectedness of individual properties. It uses information that was gathered as part of the $350,000 Bendigo Urban Flood Study in 2013, the results of which have still not made it the National Flood Insurance Database used by insurers to set premiums. The authority states on its website that the study information can be used by residents to understand flood risks, by people looking to buy or rent homes, and by developers considering subdividing land. The council will vote on making the 2013 study part of its planning scheme overlay that influences future developments. But Bendigo resident Gavan Conroy has argued for more than a year that because there are errors

UNDER PRESSURE: The NCCMA has removed data from the Flood Eye site. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN in Flood Eye, the general public is being misled. It was in a letter to Mr Conroy that NCCMA chief executive Brad Drust conceded the authority was investigating the “anomalies” and had “identified their origin as being a minor issue with the reporting function of the Flood Eye tool that is isolated to reports for Bendigo and a small amount of data in some reports.” Mr Conroy had included addresses which according to Flood Eye flooded even during in onein-five-year flood, including the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank headquarters. He told the Bendigo Weekly: “I feel for the hundreds of people

who have been misled by the inaccurate information provided by Flood Eye since it was launched in 2015. “Many of them must have been frightened off buying properties in Bendigo especially those which Flood Eye incorrectly showed would flood during a one in five year event as a result of flood water breaking out of Bendigo Creek.” But Mr Drust said the authority continued to have a high level of confidence in the data and in Flood Eye and was manually checking all scenarios, as it had hand checked the one-in-100-year flood data. The authority and the consult-

ants Water Technology have previously noted there were issues with the rainfall data in the catchment. The study was completed using rainfall figures from only one rainfall gauge at Bendigo airport and Mr Drust told the Bendigo Weekly there was the need for another gauge within the catchment. “This gauge would provide additional long term rainfall figures for conducting a review of the flood study in the longer term,” he said. The data itself was fine, Mr Drust said. “The issue was with a small percentage of sites where the data was not talking properly with Flood Eye,” he said.

Recycling plan rolled out

RESIDENTS could see their recycling bins picked up more often than general rubbish bins as the City of Greater Bendigo grapples with how to turn around an embarrassingly low recycling rate that is sending reusables to landfill. A council audit of waste showed two thirds of rubbish found in redlid general waste bins could have been recycled. Presentation and assets director Craig Lloyd confirmed that changing the pick-up schedule to weekly for recyclables and fortnightly for general rubbish was a measure that will be considered in a munici-

pality-wide review of the council’s waste services. The findings of the review will be delivered to council by the end of the year. Seeking to replicate the information campaign that accompanied the recently-introduced organics waste service, Mr Lloyd and councillors Andrea Metcalf and Jennifer Alden launched an education drive this week that will urge residents to sort rubbish before throwing it out. An audit of 250 bins of each type showed very low contamination in the organics and recycling bins suggesting residents understand what waste belongs in

those bins. The problem is residents are not sorting what goes in the general rubbish bin, and the habit makes us among the worst recyclers in Victoria.

Bendigo residents are still placing recyclables such as paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, cans, plastics and organic garden and food waste in their red-lid waste bin.

I think the bulk of it is a lack of understanding, people just not understanding that they can recover and recycle

“The audit is backed up by state government figures which place greater Bendigo in the bottom 50 per cent of Victoria’s 79 local government areas for waste resource recovery,” Mr Lloyd said. “Unfortunately, many greater

By Sharon kemp

“Objects that can be recycled are a valuable resource and the cost of sending waste to landfill will continue to rise so the more we recycle and the less we send to landfill, the better.” Asked if laziness or ignorance

was behind the problem, Mr Lloyd said lack of knowledge was the biggest factor. “I think the bulk of it is a lack of understanding, people just not understanding that they can recover and recycle particular things,” he said. “This is part of the campaign that we will roll out in the next few days, to try and provide more information on that. “I think there is an element of people who just use whatever space in their bins, but I think that is a very small minority.” Mr Lloyd said residents could call the council with questions about what can be recycled.

Council starts CEO search A FULL recruitment process could lead to the hiring of a new chief executive for the City of Greater Bendigo, or the renewal of incumbent Craig Niemann’s contract, when it expires in December. Mayor Margaret O’Rourke announced councillors intended to advertise the position,

Craig’s leadership has been critical in tune: Girton music teacher Jacqui Vine and Ella Fletcher. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Music showcase hits the right note Next week will see some impressive evidence of the success of the Girton Grammar School music program. Over two nights on August 8 and 9, more than 600 students from the Junior and Senior Schools will take to the Ulumbarra stage in a vocal and instrumental showcase, likely to be the largest of its kind in regional Australia. In fact, head of music, Stephen Vine said that he

believes Girton has the largest music program outside Melbourne. Girton headmaster Matthew Maruff that in the past decade the school has experienced extraordinary growth when it comes to music. “10 years ago, approximately 175 music lessons were conducted in the school every week,” he said. “Now, each week approximately 600 lessons are

conducted across the junior senior schools, almost certainly equating to the largest regional music program in the country.” The Girton ensembles showcase events will feature a range of vocal and instrumental performances ranging from the grade three and four “Poco Strings” and the junior performance choir through to the senior school symphony orchestra with over 26 strings players.

Mr Vine believes one of the reasons for the success of their program is that playing a string instrument is compulsory for every student at grade two level. “Because we are a P-12 school the students have the opportunity and consistency to continue with music throughout their school career.” Mr Vine said. Tickets to the performance are on sale via gotix. com.au

but would vote on the proposal officially during August’s council meeting. Cr O’Rourke said councillors wanted to test the market for available candidates for the job. The council will hand over the process to recruitment consultants, but Cr O’Rourke was at pains to insist the decision was not a reflection on Mr Niemann’s performance in the job. “His performance is very good but it is about

testing the market,” she said. “It is not mandatory in local government (to automatically advertise a position), but it is starting to move that way.” Coliban Water managing director Jeff Rigby was asked to reapply for his position at the end of a five-year contract expiring late last year. Mr Rigby was reappointed for another term, beating out more than 70 applicants. Cr O’Rourke said the open market process was sound business practice. She said councillors fully supported to Mr Niemann and wanted him to reapply. “The City of Greater Bendigo is one of the most well regarded local governments in Victoria and is known for its innovation and leadership at a local and regional level,” she said. “Craig’s leadership has been critical to the creation of this reputation. “However, it is normal business practice to test the market and council looks forward to receiving applications from a wide range of candidates.”

Funds boost for dragon

THE community campaign for a new Chinese dragon will receive a significant boost today, with the state government expected to pledge $250,000 towards replacing Sun Loong. Premier Daniel Andrews and Tourism minister John Eren are scheduled to join local members Jacinta Allan and Maree Edwards to announce the funds toward the Dai Gum Loong project. The new showpiece of Bendigo’s Easter festival, Dai Gum Loong will be the longest imperial dragon in the world at 140 metres. It will replace Sun Loong, which has been the festival’s headline attraction since 1971. “Dai Gum Loong will attract visitors, boost local jobs and en-

sure the Chinese community’s proud history in Bendigo lives on,” Mr Andrews said. Sun Loong will also be preserved in a process expected to take more than two years, before being retired to the Golden Dragon Museum. The Dai Gum Loong 750 campaign has already attracted significant support, with Virgin supremo Sir Richard Branson pledging to freight the dragon from China at no cost. The community group behind the project has already raised almost $200,000. Bendigo East MP, Jacinta Allan said the project would ensure the Easter festival continues to grow. “Not only will Bendigo contin-

bigger and better than ever,” she said.

“This is great for jobs, local businesses and Bendigo’s future.” Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards, said the Easter festival brings the whole community together each year to celebrate all that is great about Bendigo. “With a new Chinese dragon, this event is set to go from strength to strength,” she said. It’s hoped that Dai Gum Loong will make his premiere at the 2019 Easter festival, which will coincide with Sun Loong’s final appearance and a one-of-a-kind display of unprecedented colour and culture. Bendigo Heritage Attractions chairperson Wayne Gregson said the organisation was proud to tell the stories of Bendigo’s first residents, whose history pre‐dates the gold rush. “We believe that this tram will be a very popular choice for our visitors, in

A NEW addition to Bendigo’s talking tram fleet telling the story of the city’s indigenous history hit the tracks this week. Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation and Bendigo Heritage Attractions have partnered to create the new themed tram, which went into service this week. “There are eight shires being looked at, and the fragmented nature of council’s business does little to assist in terms of efficiency within the organisation.” It’s hoped the proposed jobs hub would also be home to more state and federal office workers, and the City of Greater Bendigo remains an active lobbyist for further decentralisation of government jobs, which Cr O’Rourke said were important to the future growth of Bendigo and the region. “If we know they are coming, let’s keep planning for it,” she said. “Bendigo is a can-do city… This is something unique to Bendigo and it’s in our DNA to get things done.” Nine months into her mayoral term, Cr O’Rourke said it was important to note Bendigo was already a net importer of people on a daily basis, with more people coming into the city for work than there were people leaving town each morning. “In the morning, Bendigo brings jobs in… this is about Bendigo and it’s about the region,” she said. Cr O’Rourke declined to comment on the potential location of a new court complex, but said the present site had served Bendigo well, and that the community needs better court facilities. She acknowledged security, safety and overcrowding issues as paramount to any

future planning. “It’s time to invest more in the legal system,” Cr O’Rourke said. Away from the centre of Bendigo, Cr O’Rourke said transport services would be critical in the municipality’s future growth, and that Bendigo needs better transport for its 14 smaller and mostly rural communities. With the next state election just 15 months away, Cr O’Rourke made a passionate plea to political leaders on all sides to approach the next few years with a spirit of bi-partisanship, describing the opportunities and challenges ahead of Bendigo as “bigger than the political cycle.” “We are planning for the future, and we don’t want political cycles to compromise our plans.” Cr O’Rourke noted 15,000 people live in the 14 smaller communities that make up an important part of the municipality, and that this portion of greater Bendigo was actually larger than some of the surrounding shires. “If Bendigo goes well, our surrounding shires go well,” she said. “Council’s regional leadership role is really important, both for our residents, and for the region.” She said she was grateful that both the state and federal governments recognise this. “Our location not only means we are well placed, but that we have proven we can deliver.”

Rail contract on track

A BENDIGO engineering firm has won a $26.2 million contract to build 882 bogie frames for Melbourne’s new metro rail fleet that will come on line in mid-2019. Hofmann Engineering will add 30 workers to its Bendigo workforce to complete the five year contract at its North Bendigo workshop. Hofmann is part of a consortium that won the overall $2.3 billion project, which includes Australian Stock Exchange-listed infrastructure services company Downer Group, Australian public infrastructure manager Plenary

Hofmann to add 30 manufacturing jobs group and Chinese rail manufacturer CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles. The work will be shared around the state, in a move that public transport minister Jacinta Allan described to Hofmann workers yesterday as “bringing manufacturing back to Victoria”. “It brings this sort of manufacturing back to Bendigo for the first time since the 1980s and I think it demonstrates that with the right policy settings and the determination of government to get these sorts of outcomes for

our purchasing, it turns into what is a significant achievement for Bendigo,” she said. Downer will upgrade its Newport rail yard in Melbourne,

First to ride the new trains in 2019 will be passengers on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. “I have been looking forward to this day for quite some time,” Ms Allan said about the contract announcement for Hofmann. “Bogie frames haven’t been built in Bendigo since the 1980s.” The contract required that apprentices make up 10 per cent of the manufacturing workforce, a percentage that Hofmann general manager Sam White said the Bendigo firm already covered.

Outlook forecasts dry end to winter SIGHTS like this are commonplace in late winter and spring, but those hoping for rain to help crops and gardens may not find relief in coming months. Bendigo recorded higher-than-average rainfall in July, but the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest outlook predicts below average rainfall through until October. The bureau also says warmer than average days and nights are likely through much of the state.

A $318,000 investment in new technology has enabled a Strathdale benchtop maker to remain competitive with its Melbourne-based competitors. The Victorian government provided $79,000 of the funds through a pool of money that industry minister Wade Noonan said allowed businesses to buy state of the art equipment beyond what they could otherwise afford. Mr Noonan was in Bendigo this week for the Victorian Labor MP’s regional caucus. CV Benchtops and Hardware chief executive Craig Stephen said the company had added two new workers and increased the skills of two others coinciding with the commissioning of a laser edge installer. The company has also invested in vacuum lifting equipment that makes work easier. “Part of the reason why we applied for the grant is we wanted to keep business in regional Victoria,” Mr Stephen said. He said the manufacturing in Bendigo had grown in line with population growth that opened up land for development. Mr Noonan said statewide, manufacturing had showed the strongest growth last year of all sectors of the economy. He said jobs in manufacturing were typically full time and required trades-based skills which were highly transferable, an important trait in an evolving economy.

The works of the primary and secondary students are featured in The Tree: The Vox Bendigo Book 2017 Young Writers Anthology. More than 180 students from 20 schools took part in the writing initiative, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bendigo and published by the Bendigo Writers Festival.

Submissions were received from schools as far afield as Boort, Charlton, Chewton, Dunolly, Echuca, Kerang, Kyabram and Swan Hill, as well as many local Bendigo primary schools and many of the region’s secondary colleges. The book’s editor Cecile Shanahan said “it was so wonderful to see so many schools once again take part in this initiative.” The theme this year was “The Tree”. Ms Shanahan said students explored the

subject in many varied ways and choosing from such a diverse selection was a difficult task for the judges – La Trobe University’s Penny Davies, Bendigo councillor Rod Fyffe and Goldfields Library Corporation CEO Chris Kelly. “It was really tough choosing who would be published,” she said. “We received poetry, informative essays, persuasive pieces and a very diverse range of fiction stories. The response was very encour-

aging and we are proud to be able to publish a wide selection of the works.” The book features entries from two categories: grades three to seven and eight to 11. The youngest student published was eight years of age and the eldest was 16. Slam poetry gives voice to many AN African-American who hails from Chicago, Miles Merrill had a stark reality check as a young man when he attended an audition for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The puzzled director asked him what role he was auditioning for. When Merrill told him the lead he was quickly disabused of that possibility and told the only role for an African-American was as the janitor. “It was then I realised there would be no parts for me. And when I thought about it there are only about six male African-American actors with a high profile,” he said. Merrill’s response to the situation was to pursue other avenues such as slam poetry, where he knew he could have a voice. According to Merrill, slam poetry is accessible to people from all walks of life. “Slam poetry breaks down barriers of education, class and loca-

Sgt Singe completed a bachelor of science and had her aspirations set on forensic science when she called Victoria Police with questions about career pathways. After that conversation, Sgt Singe enrolled in the police force and has worked there ever since, forging a long and varied career serving in prosecutions, communications, commu-

nity policing, sexual assault and child abuse, training, divisional response, and now in family violence. “I have done so many different jobs which is what I love about the police force,” she said. “There are so many different jobs within the one job, that is what I think makes it easier for longevity in the job.” – Sharon Kemp

Amnesty target gets results THE National Firearms Amnesty has already had results in Bendigo, with a number of illegally-held weapons being handed in to a licensed gun dealer. In the past two weeks alone, one Bendigo store has had half a dozen handguns handed in, as well as at least two automatic rifles. Included in the haul at Hartley’s Hunting and Fishing were two Luger automatic pistols and an American M1 carbine. The amnesty runs until September 30 and allows people to hand in any firearms in their possession

DESPITE women being a part of the Victoria police force for a century, it was only 30 years ago that female officers were able to carry a firearm on their hip, not in their handbag. And only a few years before that they were allowed to wear trousers. For Margaret Singe and Leesa Johnson, the changes that have levelled work for female officers in recent decades are welcome but they would like to see more women in the force. “Sometimes it is just about getting women to put themselves in,” Senior Sergeant Johnson said. Victoria Police magazine Police Life writes that in 2017, male officers outnumber women three to one. Sgt Johnson, who manages the Bendigo police station, said the organisation-wide target was for equal representation. “We are still a fair way off but it is just about being progressive,” she said. “When we talk about this, we still have to talk about best person for the job. It is also about having the confidence to have a voice in a male-dominated field.” Sgt Johnson says it means calling out behaviour she doesn’t accept. She and Sergeant Singe are proud of their own generations’ achievements and acknowledge their predecessors had it tough, challenged by the attitude of their male counterparts and hampered by working conditions and equipment that didn’t allow them to easily perform the same work as men. They remember duty as young officers in divisional vans, having to scale fences in skirts chasing offenders. “I always remember one night working in Hawthorn and we got an offenders on call, and we got there and there was this high cyclone fence,” Sgt Singe said. “Of course, I am in a skirt with stockings and the policemen, of course, just assumed, if I was going to be working with them, I was going to do all the job. “So basically I just had to hitch up my skirt and go over the top, tearing my stockings to pieces as I went.”

without fear of prosecution. The option remains to apply for a licence, or if already a licence holder the guns can be registered, or the item can be surrendered without payment. Store owner Lindsay Hamley said it’s a good opportunity. “You may be hanging on to a gun for sentimental reasons, or have not known what to do with it. Now is the perfect opportunity,” he said. “Whatever the condition of the firearm, it needs to be handed in.” Alongside the more notable

hand-ins, there have been air pistols, revolvers, air rifles and a .22 semi automatic rifle with a 20-round magazine. Victoria Police say if you are found in possession of an unregistered firearm, ammunition, imitation firearm or prohibited weapon outside of the provisions of the amnesty you may be charged. Maximum penalties for possessing an unregistered firearm in Victoria can be 14 years imprisonment or fines up to $279,828. Details from www.firearmsamnesty.ag.gov.au – Steve Kendall

New rest area for travellers DRIVERS travelling on the Calder Highway will get a new facility to take a break with work to soon startson the Jock Comini Rest Area at Ravenswood. The upgrade is worth $8.2 million and provides access to the area for large vehicles such as caravans and trucks. It is hoped that the area’s upgrade will encourage more drivers to stop, thus reducing fatigue-related crashes. Senator Bridget McKenzie was joined by member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards, state roads minister Luke Donnellan and federal infrastructure and transport minister Darren Chester in announcing the works. The rest area will form part of a larger revamp of the notorious Ravenswood interchange. “This section of the Calder Highway carries 6,500 southbound vehicles each day, including more than 500 heavy vehicles – that’s why we’re investing in a better spot for drivers to take a break,” Mr Donnellan said. Ms McKenzie said the area was established in 1994 to commemorate the late Maldon counFUNERALS & cillor Jock Comini OAM. PAID FUNERALS Construction onPRE the -project will begin this month with completion expected in early 2018. The existing Jock Comini Memorial Reserve will be closed for the duration of the upgrade works. The federal government has committed $6.15 million and the Victorian government $2.05m to fund the upgrade.

An invaluable donation

Call for items to help share the dignity BENDIGO residents are being encouraged to donate sanitary items to national charity Share the Dignity. “We want to ensure that no woman ever has to choose between eating or buying sanitary products,” founder Rochelle Courtenay said. With more than 22,000 Victorians homeless and 43 per cent of those people women, Bendigo residents are being urged to donate sanitary items to stores and businesses during the month of August. Share the Dignity was established in 2015 to provide sanitary products to homeless and at-risk women in Australia. Since then Share the Dignity has grown into a national charity which has collected over 650,000 packets of pads and tampons from collection points in businesses, schools and other locations all over Australia. Every item collected is registered, sorted and sent to services that directly support women and girls in need. From a handful of volunteers, there are now over 1000 volunteers throughout Australia working to help women in need, collecting from over 2000 collection points across the country. Products are donated to women in a range of situations including those who are homeless, have fled domestic violence, who live in remote indigenous communities, in low socio-economic areas and droughtstricken farming communities across Australia. People can drop their items into the Villawood office at 47 Queen Street, Coles stores, and other businesses around Bendigo including Australian Hearing, Fernwood Fitness and Terry White Chemists. To learn more about the Share the Dignity appeal please visit www.sharethedignity. com.au

POSITIVE OUTLOOK: Peter Van Schijk and Maree Derby. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN MAREE Derby and Peter Van Schajik do not know whose kidneys they received in recent transplant operations, but they are grateful for the new lease of life their donated organs have given them. During DonateLife week, the pair are telling their stories to encourage Australians to register to be organ donors. They are both well after recent transplant operations at the Austin Hospital, Ms Derby’s only six weeks ago.

She suffers from polycystic kidney disease, as did her mother and as will her daughter. Her mother was the recipient of a donated kidney years ago “and she is doing really well, so it gives me hope”, Ms Derby said. “You don’t have to dialyse three times a week which really knocks you around, it is a new lease on life really.” She doesn’t know the identity, not even the gender, of the donor but her way of thanking

the person’s family is to cherish the kidney she recieived. “I will cherish it and look after it, as best as I can and try to live a good life,” Ms Derby said. “I will try and honour it.” Bendigo Health nurse donation specialist Craig Sloan is responsible for identifying potential donors given only one per cent qualify. “They need to be on a ventilator, they need to be in the Intensive Care Unit, and it used to

be you had to be brain dead as well but now we can do it after cardiac death,” Mr Sloan said. “But the pool is still small.” Since national reforms were introduced in 2009, organ donation has doubled but there is still about 1400 people on the waiting list. The reforms created a national register on which Australians are urged to sign up if they wish to donate. To register, go to register.donatelife.gov.au

16 • NEWS RATES IN THE MAIL THE City of Greater Bendigo has started the annual process of sending out a total of 58,243 rates notices to residents. Ratepayers who pay their rates in full by October 2, 2017 will receive a 1.5 per cent discount. To receive the discount, any arrears outstanding must also be paid in full along with the current rates and charges and fire services levy. The rates notices issued cover this financial year and will raise a total of $120 million. Council’s corporate performance director Kerryn Ellis said rates were an important way to help fund community services and maintain and upgrade infrastructure such as footpaths and roads.

SMOKING BAN ENFORCED NEW smokefree laws came into effect across Victoria this week, banning outdoor smoking at cafes and restaurants. The ban covers all restaurants, cafés, take-away shops and licenced premises, including beer gardens, courtyards and footpath dining where food, other than snacks, is served. Smoking will also be banned at food fairs and organised outdoor events such as street and community festivals and local school fetes. Businesses have been provided with support to get ready for smoke-free outdoor dining, including a dedicated Tobacco Information Line, a suite of guides and factsheets, and about 330,000 free no smoking signs. Local councils have also received financial support to help enforce the bans, with 350 council officers attending training sessions and 180 local law officers appointed to enforce the bans.

Give SES a try

THE Marong SES unit is calling on more volunteers and giving locals the chance to become involved at a series of come and try sessions during August. The SES is responsible for managing emergency responses to disasters such as floods and storms and also plays a role in rescue operations with specialised equipment. The organisation has volunteers in all ages, professions and backgrounds at various sites across the state. As well as working in the field, community education, media liaison, incident management and

Steps towards Bendigo Cycling Classic YOU have signed up to the Bendigo Cycling Classic... what next? Mass participation cycling events have become very popular, and are a great way to support a charity, be part of the community and also achieve a personal goal. Our “Helping cyclists with a

goal” program is a growing part of our business, and it is especially rewarding and refreshing to help enthusiastic recreational cyclists learn the correct way to prepare for an event. The improvement rates are so fast if you train smart at recreational level. In the coming weeks I will be writing on the most important topics to focus your energy towards to prepare for the inaugural Bendigo Cycling Classic. The first concept to think about is the “don’t put all your

eggs in one basket” strategy. This means the first step is to decide how much time you have each week to prepare? Then divide that time into appropriate topics that need attention to improve. You will get faster improvement and less chance of burn out if you work on a group of topics rather than gravitating to the one you are best at. Whether you are attempting the 100-kilometre or the 25km event the training philosophy will be the same. In coming

weeks I will use the 100km event as the bench mark, athletes doing the shorter events can simply reduce their training or time dedicated to the goal by for example 75 per cent if they are doing the 25km event. Here are the topics we will be writing about in the coming weeks: training program, equipment, group training, nutrition, the importance of stretching, what to do on the day of the event and regeneration. – Matt Wallace

Cheap power needed With reference to the article on the ability of Bendigo’s manufacturing sector to expand, and their problem with rapidly escalating energy costs, I don’t believe it’s going to improve unless we go back to cheaper fossil fuel power ie coal. It’s all very well to blame the problem on uncertainty of energy policy but it has been quite clear to investors that renewable energy is where the subsidies go, but renewable energy eg solar and wind is too expensive for industry or individuals. Even gas is getting ridiculously costly. Reliable, cheap power is what Bendigo’s manufacturing and indeed every manufacturer in Australia needs. It’s time to bite the bullet and follow the example of numerous developed and developing countries around the world who assist their industry to be competitive; build high energy, low emissions new coal power plants. Australian industry could never compete on wages but we had the advantage of cheap power. All that is gone, and so too will all the jobs and living standards. H. Leach, Bendigo

Government hypocritical This parliament has shown us that you can be ignorant, arrogant, dishonest, incompetant, paranoid, stubborn, lazy, unable to understand basic economics or science, cosy up to international media moguls, but you cannot devote your time to the needs of your own Australian citizens – or be a dual citizen. Parliament is the most hypocritical institution in Australia. They swear to god to uphold the honour of the country, then allegedly deceive and hedge their positions with the end result making them look like dishonest fools – at our expense. Now we have Turnbull and Joyce hiding behind the skirt of Canavan’s mother, they go for the jugular of their opponents, then trivialise the “mistake” of one of their own. Why is Canavan being paid for a position he no longer holds, while the other two were not given the same opportunity? Canavan’s claim that he did not know that his mother signed him up for Italian citizenship 11 years ago holds about as much water as a bottomless bucket, and if the high

court allows him to stay in parliament, then the other two involved should be reinstated. But changing the constitution to accommodate incompetent politicians is not the answer. Surely we have enough laws both in and out of parliament to adequately cover these careless actions, and more to the point, what we need is legislation to make politicians more responsible for any such behaviour. Now in true Barnaby Joyce style he has been caught out trivialising the alleged Murray Darling basin water theft, once again highlighting that he is unfit for the positions of Deputy Prime Minister and Water Minister. Australians deserve better than this, as our once great country slides down the gurgler, overseen by incompetent, arrogant, ignorant politicians. How much more of this can the Australian people take, and just where will we be when this incompetent government is finished trashing the place? They say that you get the government you deserve, but nobody deserves this lot. Ken Price, Eaglehawk

Abuse won’t be tolerated I find the comments by both the Mayor Cr O’Rourke and Cr Wriggleworth in relation to what they say is unfair treatment of females who are on the Bendigo council interesting, particularly when Mayor O’Rourke states that “what disappoints me is there are correspondence that comes into council by people who are very intimidatory, borderline bullying.” I note she makes this claim but fails to name the person(s), say how many times this has happened or give an example of such correspondence to allow us see if this is actually the case or, if she is overreacting. I am also sure that the mayor would be well aware of what course of action that would be available to her if she believes these allegations are serious enough and more importantly has she reported these complaints to the appropriate authorities? I also note that she has failed to mention that the problem was well entrenched within the council itself as a number of councillors, both male and female over recent years have been investigated for bullying against their own fellow councillors with a number of these allegations

being upheld. I therefore feel that this is nothing new within the Bendigo council and just because you hold a position of authority within the council it does not automatically grant you respect, as you have to earn respect. It would appear that if you question a council decision, which is our right then you’re a naysayer, not someone who is trying to make constructive criticism. Had the council taken the advice from some very wise business people who have put good ideas forward over the years then they might not be in as much debt or have wasted so much money on white elephant projects, which are still continuing. The council needs to be more open and transparent and work with the ratepayers not try and alienate them. Robert K Smallpage, Huntly

Seeking family I have just embarked on a genealogy course researching the gaps in my family tree. I was given a Letters page from a local Somerset (England) newspaper dated Christmas/ New Year 1990 that included a letter from a Valerie O’Brien, 23 Harrison Street, Bendigo, searching for Wilton relatives in Somerset. Unfortunately, the family member thought that we were not related but it transpires that we most

certainly are. The story in Australia was quite a sad one as Valerie had been separated from her brother and sister for 55 years and had only just been re-united with them and they were heading for a trip to England. All the family details she included in her letter match exactly to my research so I wrote to Valerie at the Bendigo address but received no reply. If anyone knows of Valerie O’Brien or her family I would love to hear from them so that we can address this piece of family history and tell them of their Somerset relations. Helping the next generation of farm leaders The Andrews government is helping our next generation of farming leaders take the next big step in their career with the Young Farmer Scholarships. With Victoria a world leader in clean and green produce, there’s never been a better time to embark on a career in agriculture. Scholarships are available to help young farmers boost their skills and equip themselves for the farming challenges of the future.

25 young people across regional Victoria have already benefitted from this training opportunity and are now putting their skills to work in our $13 billion agriculture sector. Up to $10,000 is available to farmers and farm workers aged 35 years or under to help them with development and career progression. The funding consists of up to $5000 for study, backed by a further $5000 to invest on-farm or in professional development activities to help put new skills into practice. Examples of eligible courses include a Diploma in Agriculture, human resources training, business management courses, a Diploma of Agribusiness Management and a range of on-farm technical training. Our young farmers are the leaders of tomorrow and with the right support and encouragement, I am confident Victorian agriculture is in the right hands. By supporting the development of young farmers, we are investing not just in the growth of the agriculture sector but in the future of regional Victoria. Applications for the Young Farmers Scholarship Program will close on August 30, 2017. Building momentum IN about 15 months’ time, Victorians will head to the polls to elect their next state government. And after a decade of boom time for Bendigo that started with construction of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank headquarters in the heart of the city and was bookended by the new Bendigo Hospital project, it’s vital we do all we can to maintain the momentum. In the past decade, Bendigo has also been lucky enough to see its library rebuilt, the airport has been upgraded, new ambulance facilities have been established, schools have been rebuilt and new ones established. Along with that our TAFE is undergoing a major redevelopment, the university continues to expand, we’re getting a new indoor pool, the showgrounds have been dramatically improved, transport has been overhauled, roads improved and tourism infrastructure has been upgraded. Not only do we have the new Bendigo hospital but St John of God is much bigger, our manufacturing sector has been boosted, sporting amenities are greatly improved and

Editorial Comment life is generally much better for most of us. But Bendigo can’t afford to stop. This week’s state caucus visit has been a valuable opportunity for Bendigo to articulate its plans to the government, and for the government to make some very important, and timely, announcements for our community. Our city’s growth trajectory shows we are on track to be a place almost 200,000 people call home in the nottoo-distant future, and far from wanting to resist this growth splurge and its associated challenges, we should do all we can to embrace it. There’s a couple of items on the “to do” list that need attending to, and more than ever, we need to act. The allocation of $3.9 million in the recent state budget to assist in planning for the modernisation and expansion of Bendigo’s courts was the first step in a process that war-

pk with Peter Kennedy

rants urgent attention. The safety, efficiency and ability of our courts to operate in the manner that best serves the community cannot be traded away, and Bendigo needs the support of all its community, business and political leaders to ensure we achieve the best outcome of this funded planning process. Equally, the opportunity to establish a major government jobs complex in the heart of the city brings with it the potential to create significant economic spin-offs for the local economy. More jobs means more spending power, more people frequenting the CBD, supporting the local economy and adding more value to the economy that also fuels the city’s growth. Other challenges for our city include water security and energy. Bendigo needs to make sure it does all it can to shorten the time taken between the state government’s funding that supports planning for the Bendigo vision, and now finalising plans and then securing the funding to take the vital next steps towards continuing to build the future we all want and deserve.

Caucus visit delivers TODAY’S expected $250,000 donation from the Victorian government to the community campaign in support of the purchase of a new Chinese dragon and his associated regalia, as well as the restoration of 47-yearold Sun Loong, is an important milestone for Bendigo. The Sun Loong 750 committee, which I am part of, was drawn together to oversee the fundraising campaign to raise $750,000 for this project, which has major cultural and historic significance. Sun Loong, and before him, Loong, are much more than mere dragons to be rolled out and paraded each year as part of the spectacular that is Easter in Bendigo. The dragons have always added a very colourful and at times loud

highlight to the Easter procession as they wind their way through the packed city streets. But the dragons are also an important heritage and cultural symbol of the contribution the Chinese community has made to our city and its proud history.

USICMAN hosts Bendigo’s first “In The Metal of Winter” festival next Friday, August 11. The event features seven top regional and Melbourne metal bands. “It will be a great opportunity to showcase some of the best metal the wider region has to offer,” Liam Frost‐Camilleri (aka ‘Frosty’) of Resist Promotions, who is hosting the event, told the Weekly. The event caters to a variety of heavy rock tastes. The line-up includes melodic metal outfit Annihilist, grindcore exponents GRUDGE!, hardcore crossover Feast of Crows, and Fall and Resist, who describe their sound as “a mongrel of sorrowful melody and hostile aggression designed to reflect the harsh realities of life”. Sapphira’s Wall, Upon World’s End, and Haunted Steel complete the line-up. “Bendigo demonstrates a real interest in the metal scene. There is an opportunity to have more nights dedicated to metal and MusicMan is a terrific venue to have that happen,” Frosty said. “In the Metal of Winter” is at MusicMan on Friday, August 11. Doors at 7pm. There are a couple of other eye-catching, and decidedly mellower, gigs worthy of mention before the MusicMan metal-fest though. This Sunday, August 6, award-winning teen sister duo Charm of Finches (Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes), from Melbourne, are celebrating the first birthday of their debut album,

The ‘dream-folk’ duo have been playing folk and roots festivals nationally since 2014, and this year won the prestigious Gill Rees Young Musicians Award at the National Folk Festival in Canberra. They have also earned plaudits from The Music magazine and Tone Deaf. Charms of Finches are finishing an east coast tour with this special afternoon show. HE Peterson household is an interesting environment at the best of times. But recently, a new form of fun has been introduced to the mix – a puppy. Specifically, George the Labrador. As this column is frequented by the Kendall canines, it’s only fair that my new addition is introduced to the world this way. Like a rite of passage for the pets of the Weekly newsroom. George is, as most labradors are, constantly either sleeping, eating or biting things. There is not really any in between, no period of simple down time, it’s all go. And as most puppies do he prays on the cuteness factor to get away with things. The dog is digesting your socks? That’s okay, he looks funny while he’s doing it. He’s licking the dirty dishwasher, or got his head stuck in the bin? That’s adorable. So if a puppy is a big adjustment for the people who live at said madhouse, imagine if it were a completely foreign environment with strange people you barely know. That’s where Mika the German exchange student comes in. He is staying with us before we ship my brother off to Deutschland later this year. He summed up the first part of the adjustment best: more people work at the

Bendigo Bank building than live in his entire village of Heudorf. He also doesn’t even have a dog, let alone a puppy that rules the roost. As you may expect it was a rocky start for this unlikely pairing, especially with George’s penchant for socks. The rest of the family has invested in a pair of slippers to stop having munched up toes. You can bring plenty of things on an overseas holiday, but I don;t imagine bringing slippers to avoid having your toes devoured would have been high on the list. After days of his phalanges being turned into puppy snacks, the investment was made for Mika to get some slippers. Disappointingly – and I might add I had no say in this – there were no moccasins purchased. A golden

opportunity to experience some great Aussie culture gone begging. Thankfully, no ugg boots were bought either. That’s a part of Australian culture none of us need. Since we detached George from his foot, Mika has picked Aussie culture up pretty well. He’s grasping AFL, been to the local footy, coming to terms with some of the slang and even the local food. Although Vegemite won’t be getting a run for breakfast when he heads back to Germany. He’s even been subjected to a family dinner, though that’s a barely understandable affair even if you speak fluent English. One thing’s for sure though. When he goes home I don’t think he’ll be asking his parents for a puppy. – Joel Peterson twitter: @joelbpeterson

But if you think ABBAsolutely Fabulous is an ABBA tribute show, or a version of Mamma Mia, think again. “It is nothing like Mamma Mia, it is our story of two girls, a certain age, growing up in the1970s and never getting to that concert 40 years ago, and reliving all of that ABBA magic, and the crushes on Benny and Bjorn, and idolising those girls (Frida and Agnetha),” Burchmore said. So, with more than 30 years of performing behind her, making her one of Australia’s most adaptable show biz entertainers, Burchmore is demonstrating her business nous. “I have been in this business 30-odd years and I was lucky to be in the tail end of variety... the Don Lane show, Mike Walsh, Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Hey Hey It’s Saturday as a television thing, and then theatrically since the 1980s doing big shows here and in London’s West End, and you look at your peers at that time, how many have fallen along the way, there is a handful of us left that have sustained our careers,” she said. “It is such a tough industry to be in. There is something like 98 per cent unemployment and I am one of the lucky ones who has sustained a career for a long, long time. “I guess it is not by chance either, it is hard work and not pigeon-holing yourself into only being a musical theatre star, or only doing jazz or opera, my philosophy is let’s give it a go. “I never sit idle for too long, like with this, let’s create a show.”

Burchmore and Mulcahy have been mates since they performed in the 2001 first Australian stage performance of Mamma Mia, the theatrical musical which led to the movie of the same name starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan. The Australian performers reprised their on-stage roles for the 10-year anniversary in the 2010 antipodean season. They are back together for ABBAsolutely Fabulous in the 2017 touring season, and Burchmore is happy to return to their working friendship. “I said one day, I would love to work with you again, let’s do something, so we planted a seed and came up with ABBAsolutely Fabulous,” Burchmore said. “We are girls out to have a good time and it doesn’t matter

GOOD TIMES: Rhonda Burchmore.

that we are of a certain age or how we look. That is the message I think gets across, dotted with some fabulous songs and live music and comedy. “Lara is as short as I am tall so the physical comedy is pretty good. “It is just very warm and very fresh in terms of telling our stories, both being dance school kids, growing up on opposite sides of Australia but still on the parallel that we had similar childhoods and we are both obsessed with ABBA. “And with a big splash of Patsy and Eddie from Absolutely Fabulous.” Tickets are available at www. gotix.com.au - Sharon Kemp

Gypsum at the lake N

ORTH of what is now the Terrick Terrick National Park lies Bald Rock, situated to the east of Pyramid Hill, the area has natural deposits of gypsum, a very useful soil improver, particularly for clays. The knowledge of the deposits at Timm’s Lake had caught the eye of Herbert Keck and Son, the operators of the Bendigo nursery. Father and son took the initiative to have samples of the gypsum at Timm’s Lake analysed, and it was found to be eminently suitable for manufacturing artificial fertiliser. Those of us not in the horticultural or agricultural industry may well wonder what gypsum actually is? Gypsum is a calcium sulphate and dihydrate, for hundreds of years farmers have been aware of its benefits for the soil and consequently plant growth, hence improving crop yields. Soils that have a high sodium content this can be treated with the application of gypsum. It is the sulphur content in the gypsum which is a stimulus for plant growth, the soil’s aluminium toxicity is also measurably reduced.

Application of gypsum assists the infiltration of rain or irrigation water into the soils additionally cutting down acidity as well as reducing alkalinity levels. Early in 1923 the Kecks applied for a lease of the Timm’s Lake Reserve as there was gypsum nearby. The then Gordon Shire Council, (today in the Shire of Loddon) were of the opinion that it would be a useful way of ridding the area of “that drain” as they termed it. The existence of the deposits of gypsum had been known for some time, however father and son Keck were first to be interested in extracting this gypsum. The shire at the time viewed the working of the gypsum deposit as a good source of employment for local men. Although the title to the reserve was held by the council, they were aware that it was to be used only for recreational purposes. The Lands Department could cancel the council’s interest in Timm’s Lake as it was not permitted to generate any revenue. There was a natural water channel that fed into the

NUKOVO VIP airport, 1961: New York-based publisher Simon Weeks has just touched down in the United Soviet Socialist Republic, granted permission by the KGB to pay a brief visit to his brother and sister-in-law in Moscow, where the oncemainstream American couple now lives by choice behind Cold War enemy lines. This is no simple family reunion, however. Simon’s sibling is the notorious US defector Frank Weeks, a one-time CIA man turned traitor in the eyes of his government who for the past decade has been operating in exile against his homeland. Former State Department analyst Simon has been sent on assignment to Moscow, representing the literary company that will publish Frank’s sensational memoir, My Secret Life. The rekindling of the relationship is something that only months earlier neither could have foreseen. Travel between the two countries is rare; the USSR is wary of admitting foreigners and the US, in turn, frowns on its citizens venturing any-

lake, and if the channel was eliminated or changed the council feared that it could be sued by landholders who were at the lower end of the lake, if the water from there at some future time flooded their land. Timm’s Lake acted as a natural buffer for the farmers who were at the lower end. The gypsum deposit of interest to the Kecks was on land owned by Mr AC McCrae and the Kecks were actively in discussions with him in relation to working the deposit. There was a feeling of great regret that “these outsiders”, the Kecks, were perhaps going to exploit this asset rather than local people. Herbert Keck had asked the council for permission to excavate out and remove the gypsum near Timm’s Lake and abutting a roadway nearby. He proposed

to pay the council a bond to ensure that everything would be reinstated to the council’s satisfaction. The Mines Department came into the equation as well, for by July 1923 as the applied-for lease had been referred to them for comment, seeking to ensure that there were no objections from the Gordon Shire. Another landholder Mr DM Burke had simultaneously applied for a grazing lease to the council of Timm’s Lake. The council was yet to deliberate on Burke’s request. Legal opinion had been gained by the Lands Department late in 1923 in respect of the Timm’s Lake Reserve and as a result, the secretary of the Gordon Shire was to lodge a formal request to obtain full title to the reserve and then the council would be free to do with it as it saw fit.

where near the Soviet bloc. Simon has been welcomed at Frank’s instigation. The KGB, for which Frank is engaged in intelligence, sees the release of his tell-all manuscript as a public relations coup – the ultimate piece of propaganda confirming to the US public that one of its own has seen the error of his liberal Western ways and embraced Communism as the epitome of government. It’s a fraught situation, both politically and from a personal perspective. Simon has not forgotten Frank’s decision to vanish completely one night, taking with him a bank of knowledge amassed over years of casual brotherly lunches as the Weeks boys traded tales from their respective government offices in Washington, DC. But maybe, just maybe, this move is Frank’s attempt to signal a change of heart – to reach out for help. Are his spying days over? Is he hinting that he’s ready to head home at last? – Rosalea Ryan

STEWARTS Accountants have long moved on from the retrospective reporting of yesteryear offered by traditional accounting firms. At Stewarts Accountants they’re a multi-skilled team of accountants, researchers, financial planners, business managers and technology lovers, focused on the innovation of today and your financial position of tomorrow. Sure, they’ll look back over the year that was to ensure you’re compliant but Stewarts also look forward to identify how you can better position yourself, your business, your company and your family to ensure you’re best placed to maximise your return. For example, are there things you could have been claiming during the past year that you’re not aware of? Maybe you work part-time from a home office and or use your car for work-related travel? Or maybe you made a big equipment purchase but didn’t think to consult your accountant along with your bank manager to determine the best possible way to arrange finance.

Fast & Reliable Service

The ins and outs of knowing what to claim and how can be complex and confusing. That’s where Stewarts come in. At Stewarts they’ve been doing bread and butter compliance taxation for more than 40 years. But that’s not all they do. Would you like a side of cashflow with that? Who would ever say no to more money? Their team of number and analytical specialists will review your business performance to determine how you can maximise your cashflow. Or how about an add-on? If you’re in the cloud you probably understand when Stewarts say “addon” they are not offering steak knives but rather access to a suite of digital tools that will improve your business performance, forward planning, compliance and cashflow. But that is enough about Stewarts, they want to know about you. Phone their office to learn more about how they can add real value to your financial performance on 5442 2966.

Last roll of the dice By JOEL PETERSON

PYRAMID Hill faces a brutal task to make the Loddon Valley Football Netball League’s senior finals series, coming up against ladder leader Calivil United in this weekend’s final round. The Bulldogs head into the clash 8-7, locked on points with Mitiamo and a game behind Bears Lagoon-Serpentine. None of the three sides are locked into a finals spot, with all but Calivil’s position on top of the table and Bridgewater in second, in flux. Bears play Newbridge (third) in a battle to fin-

ish top three. If Serpentine loses, it could fall out of the finals all together with wins to Pyramid Hill and Mitiamo, while Newbridge can finish no lower than fourth. The Maroons would relish another game against Bridgewater, which it has beaten on both occasions this season. Mitiamo can finish fourth, fifth or sixth but should beat Maiden Gully YCW, and then put the onus back on Bears and the Bulldogs. If all three finish with nine wins, Bears Lagoon’s vastly inferior percentage would see Greg Gadsden’s

side miss the finals after a resurgent season. Adding to the drama is the fact that the decisive Calivil United versus Pyramid Hill clash will be played on Sunday as a AFL Victoria WorkSafe Game of the Month. AFL champions Bryce Gibbs and Peter Knights are hitting the road for the final game on Sunday. Sharelle McMahon will also be travelling to the clash at Calivil, just around the corner from her former home town of Bamawm. Held as a joint initiative with Netball Victoria, Gibbs, Knights and McMahon will be on

hand to meet the locals and share their sporting stories. The match is the eighth and final WorkSafe Game of the Month event scheduled in leagues across the state this year. This year’s LVFNL grand final venue has also be confirmed, with Serpentine to host the clash on September 2. Bridgewater, Calivil United, Maiden Gully, Mitiamo and Newbridge will also host finals. Finals sides have been decided in A-grade netball, with Mitiamo, Newbridge, Pyramid Hill, Bridgwater and Calivil all set to feature in finals.

Spots open at academy

RISING UP: South Bendigo faces a huge clash this week.

TALENT: Academy kayaker James Humphry. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN THE Bendigo Academy of Sport is calling on kayaking hopefuls to test their skills in its Toward Olympic Hopes Kayak program. The program has been immensely successful with coach Tony Misson currently overseas with a national team, as is gun paddler Maddie Batters. Batters has recently been competing in Europe. The academy will hold trials on Saturday, October 7, to sort through potential athletes. The program gives athletes an introduction to both flatwater and whitewater kayaking, equipment is supplied, access to national coaches and access

to the academy and its coaches. Places exist for both girls and boys from across central and northern Victoria and will be based on both current and potential ability. Successful candidates will be offered a seven-month scholarship, beginning in October, which includes physical, skill, a strength and conditioning program and athlete education sessions. Athletes must be 12 years of age by October 1 and under 18 years as of December 31. Expressions of interest can be made with the academy’s Graham Gordon on 5444 7700 or g.gordon@latrobe.edu.au

Rivals meet in QEO showdown SOUTH Bendigo and Sandhurst’s clash at the QEO on Saturday has the traditional rivalry plus plenty of extra meaning as the two sides vie for a Bendigo Football Netball League finals spot. Both sides have been decimated by injuries after making promising starts to the season, Sandhurst’s problems compounded with the loss of two-time Michelsen Medal winner Tim Martin to a knee injury. The Dragons will also be without Pascale Craig, who was suspended for three matches at a busy night of tribunal hearings on Wednesday. Evening up the ledger is an ankle injury to South ruckman Kieran Strachan that saw him on crutches by the end

of last weekend’s clash with Kyneton. South coach Brady Childs remained hopeful that the two-time best and fairest winner would be available. The game could all but lock up fifth spot for the victorious side, even with three rounds left. Sandhurst plays Maryborough, Kangaroo Flat and Gisborne in its final three games and is expected to win all three, while South has tough tests against Golden Square and Strathfieldsaye before playing the Kangaroos in the final round. Sandhurst’s current deficit of six premiership points could be cut to two with a win over the Bloods. The Dragons would then need to take care of business against three of

the league’s bottom four and hope South does not beat either Square or the Storm – or both. If South wins it would have a 10-point advantage over the Dragons with a possible 12 points remaining and a game it would be expected to win in the final round. The top-three fight is also continuing, with ladder leaders Eaglehawk fresh off beating Sandhurst and travelling down to Gisborne on Saturday. Strathfieldsaye takes on Castlemaine and will have star forward Lachlan Sharp, who was cleared of striking on Wednesday. Golden Square faces Maryborough and Kyneton plays Kangaroo Flat in other round 15 games.

TOP TWO SPOT LOCKED UP THE Bendigo Lady Braves will tune up for playoffs this weekend when they face Melbourne. The Lady Braves locked away a top-two spot with an impressive win over the Launceston last weekend. News wasn’t so good for the club’s men’s team, which was thrashed 112-73 by North West Tasmania to fall out of postseason contention. It was as disappointing an end as the team could have imagined to a season in which it defended last year’s breakthrough title. The Lady Braves head into the playoffs as the club’s lone hope and will host at least one home final. The club will regain Chloe Bibby for this weekend after she wrapped up her Australian Gems duty last week. If they win and finish on top, Bendigo will host a final next weekend and have a chance to win through to the conference title game, but will play Dandenong in the semi final regardless of outcome.

HOCKEY EVENT A HIT EAGLEHAWK Hockey Club will celebrate its impressive history this weekend with a 50th Anniversary function. Held on Saturday night at the Exchange, the club is inviting former players and officials to attend. The club was started by Kaye (Oswald) Trimble, Raye (Brown) Fleay, Gayle (Oswald) Worthington and Barbara Hopper in 1967. For information, contact Kaye Trimble on 5443 0596 or find the club on facebook.

Foes gain ground on Hawks By JOEL PETERSON

LADDER leader Eaglehawk will be out to regain momentum in its Bendigo Amateur Soccer League championship chase when it takes on Spring Gully United on Sunday. The Hawks went down to a resurgent Strathdale 2-0 last weekend in a clash that saw the Blues jump up to fourth. The big winner of the weekend was Shepparton South, which now sits just one point behind Eaglehawk in second place after a 6-0 win over Spring Gully. The loss to Strathdale snapped an 11-game unbeaten run for the Hawks, while the perennial powerhouse Blues have won their past five games. The pacy Lonain Burnett opened the scoring for Strathdale five minutes from half time to hand the Blues a onegoal lead at the interval. The game then entered a long stalemate, before Lukas Blom provided the decisive blow after 72 minutes and doubled Strathdale’s advantage. The win keeps the Blues one place above Epsom, which plays Shepparton United this week after winning a 10-goal shootout with Golden City at Shadforth Park last week. Godwil Basha netted a hattrick for the hosts before being sent off 20 minutes short of full time with his side up 4-2.

From there, it was all the Scorpions, two goals to James Crawley among four in the final 20 minutes as they punctuated the 6-4 win with a stoppage time penalty to Cooper Arkinstall. There was more than a hattrick on offer for South’s Joel Atkins, who found the back of the net four times in the 6-0 win against Spring Gully. The quartet of goals gives Atkins 28 on the season for the second-placed side, two goals behind Eaglehawk’s Greg Thomas in the race for the competition’s leading goal scorer. All four of Aitken’s goals came in a furious, eightminute second half burst. Helping Eaglehawk’s cause is the fact that South has the bye this weekend, which gives the Borough the opportunity to extend its gap atop the table. Other matches see thirdplaced Shepparton United face Epsom, Tatura host Golden City, bottom side Colts United away to Strathdale, Moama-Echuca host Shepparton and Gully host Eaglehawk at Stanley Avenue. TESTING: Colts United takes on the in-form Strathdale this weekend. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Griffin stars for Opals

GAME ON: Kelsey Griffin.

From Page 36 Griffin’s performance certainly puts her in the frame for future selection with Australia, though the equation isn’t as simple as picking the side based purely on form. The Opals need to balance a host of returning talent, including point guard Leilani Mitchell.

While Mitchell doesn’t play Griffin’s position, the team can play only one naturalised citizen and will have to pick between the two and Perth Lynx star Sami Whitcomb for its 2018 World Cup campaign. The other factor complicating matters is that the point guard position would likely be a position of need for Austral-

ia, where it has better depth at the forward spots. Griffin returned to Australia this week, posting a message on social media thanking fans for their support during the Opals campaign. Her attention now turns to the Bendigo Spirit’s WNBL campaign, which begins on October 7.

Top week for local riders BENDIGO cyclists have had a good week both in Australia and abroad with a number of strong results. Leading the charge for the Australians was Zak Dempster, who recorded a strong seventh placing at the RideLondon-Surrey Classic. In a crack field, Dempster finished alongside former teammate Sam Bennett and one second behind Tour de France green jersey winner Michael Matthews, Cannondale Drapac pairing Sep Vanmarcke and Wouter Wippert and winner Alexander Kristoff. In Poland, Orica Scott’s Jack Haig launched a solo break on the race’s third stage only to be reeled in by the main group with just 900 metres to go. Haig’s teammate, Adam Yates, finished eighth on the stage, while Orica Scott sport director Dave McPartland praised Haig’s aggressive approach.

“We really got amongst it today, we made our presence felt today with Jack’s move on the final climb,” McPartland said. “It was a good move from Jack to try and set Yates up but it actually could have gone either way, it was a big effort.” Isowhey Sports Swiss Wellness rider Robbie Hucker also enjoyed a successful weekend, finishing top ten at the Tour of the

He finished one minute and 14 seconds off the winner, Brad Evans. Bendigo’s Chris Drew won the prestigious 135 kilometre Wagga to Albury road race on Saturday.

A debut to remember By JOEL PETERSON

IF it’s possible for a reputation to be enhanced after two championships, two grand final MVPs, two all-star appearances a defensive player of the year award and five straight club MVPs, it happened for Kelsey Griffin this week. While the Australian Opals fell agonisingly short of Women’s Asian Cup gold, Griffin’s performance on debut in international competition was nothing less than sensational. From the outset, she established herself as the go-to player for the Opals and formed a fearsome frontcourt with Marianna Tolo. While no doubt at times it felt surreal for Griffin herself, most supporters could well get used to the sight of the Spirit star in green and gold. She took to social media to thank her teammates and coaches for “making basketball at the highest level so enjoyable”. “I will be forever grateful to put on the green and gold and represent this amazing country I call home, Australia,” she said. Australia rampaged its way through to the final undefeated before running into a Japan side that had toppled the highly-fancied China. There, the two tangled in what was a thrilling encounter. Australia held the advantage for the majority of the game before Japan produced another memorable fightback. It was largely engineered by Saki Mizushima, who had scored 18 points for the whole tournament leading into the final. She caught fire from deep in the decider, finishing eight-of-13 for 26 points, including an outrageous seven three-pointers. She also hit the game-winning shot that gave Japan a decisive advantage in the closing stages. While Mizushima was the game’s most influential player, had Japan lost that honour surely would have been reserved for Griffin. The 29-year-old scored 30 points in the final, pulling down 15 rebounds, nabbing two steals and swatting three shots on her way to a masterful all-around performance. Continued Page 34
