TWO historic Eaglehawk buildings, indicative of the suburb’s unique heritage, will go under the hammer. With more than 150 years of history, the Oriental Bank was built in the height of the Gold Rush in 1861. The Eaglehawk bank was the first “substantial bank building” in the area during the years of rapid wealth. Restored to its former glory, it features five rentals (four apartments and a shop), bringing in about $60,000 each year.

The apartments include a single-bedroom maisonette, a double-bedroom apartment, a two-bedroom apartment and a double-bedroom apartment with views to High Street. Tweed Sutherland First National director Matt Leonard said the bank was ideal as a home or investment property. “There are a diverse range of options, so it’s tried and tested with a proven return with various types of accommodation in the building,” he said.

GOLDRUSH DAYS: The Oriental bank. “From an investment point of view, it’s ready to go. The other option is to live in a portion of the building with the beautiful big balcony, run the business downstairs and still have the ability to have accommodation.” Mr Leonard said buyers looking for flexibility with an appreciation for heritage, would be suited to this property. The Oriental Bank is on the market for $950,000. SET in the heart of Eaglehawk, the 19th Century Neangar House building is also up for sale. The original Eaglehawk Post and Telegraph office, the property was converted to tearooms before its current use as a bed and breakfast. The building features five bedrooms, five bathrooms, two kitchens, formal dining and living area and a sunroom.

Tweed Sutherland First National senior sales consultant Di Long said the Georgian property was in a very prominent position. “It is a gorgeous two-storey residence, made of solid brick in a Georgian style,” she said. “It would be absolutely perfect as a grand family home, or a hobby bed and breakfast or full time bed and breakfast.” The Peg Leg Road property has been listed at $575,000 with both commercial and private investors expected to bid. Mr Leonard said Eaglehawk’s history was a major drawcard for buyers. “There are so many different historical factors to Eaglehawk and it is reflected in the architecture,” he said. “Eaglehawk is really moving ahead and its history is very much alive.”

Ballot for jobs

Thursday, April 24, 2014 – Bendigo Weekly

By ANTHONY RADFORD

BENDIGO could be in line for hundreds of public servant jobs, but only if Premier Denis Napthine keeps his. The Bendigo Weekly understands the State Government is considering shifting Department of Environment and Primary Industries jobs from Melbourne to Bendigo. But it is only if the State Government is re-elected in November. It is unclear whether the jobs will be part of the Parks Victoria or agriculture side of the department. The Weekly understands there are about 250 Parks Victoria jobs at its Melbourne headquarters, and a similar number of primary industries jobs. The push to relocate Melbourne public servant jobs to Bendigo is not a new one. In July, 2010, then-Premier John Brumby announced 100

State Trustee jobs would be moving to Bendigo, and they are now below the new multistorey carpark in Queen St. However, they were not dependent on an election result. In December last year, Dr Napthine announced the Workcover Authority would relocate from Melbourne to Geelong, bringing 550 jobs with it.

for being linked to a political result. In 2012, the State Government announced 200 agriculture jobs would go under a rationalisation of the public service over two years. The Weekly Times last month revealed more than 300 agriculture jobs — or 150 per cent of its target — were lost

The push to relocate Melbourne public servant jobs to Bendigo is not a new one Last month the Premier announced VicRoads headquarters would move from Melbourne to Ballarat, bringing 400 jobs. Unlike the State Trustees move, both the recent announcements were dependent on the State Government being re-elected. While a DEPI move to Bendigo would no doubt be welcomed, it would be criticised

in just the first year of the program. In September, 2012, the Bendigo Weekly revealed up to 100 jobs and vital literacy and numeracy programs were lost from Bendigo during the restructure of Victoria’s Education Department. The Bendigo-based Loddon Mallee regional office merged with the Coburg-based Northern Metropolitan region head-

quarters. Previous governments have tried unsuccessfully to move agriculture departments to Bendigo. Dr Napthine will visit Bendigo today for a pre-budget funding announcement at Quarry Hill Primary School. A spokesman for Dr Napthine said he was unaware of the DEPI move.

Active living the focus of survey HOW often do you walk around your local park or head to the gym each week? Do you play organised sport for a local club or do you casually play kick-to-kick or have a hit of tennis with friends? Greater Bendigo council is about to undertake an Active Living Census and wants to know how healthy and active residents are. The findings will help the council to better plan for, develop and enhance public open spaces and recreation facilities across the region. Council Active and Healthy Communities manager Patrick Jess said this was the first time the council had carried out such a detailed survey on people’s health and recreation habits. “It is important for council staff to hear from as many residents as possible,” he said. “We want to know what you do to stay active, how often you participate, if you join in with friends and where you go. “It is also equally important to understand the barriers that may prevent people from being as active as they would like.” Mr Jess said the current Council Plan includes objec-

tives to improve open spaces and walking and cycling paths, so by completing this survey residents will be able to further inform the plan and council’s long-term priorities. “People who do not live in Greater Bendigo but work in our city, attend school or commute to use our outdoor spaces and recreational facilities are encouraged to complete the census online, as it is important to hear from all users,” he said. The paper-based census will be delivered to every household across Greater Bendigo and is open for three weeks from April 28 to May 18. Every resident, including children, is encouraged to participate for their chance to win weekly prizes, including $1000 Champions IGA vouchers, mountain bikes and extended season family pool passes. The census can also be completed online at www.bendigo.vic. gov.au/activeliving. Every person who completes the census online will be eligible for an additional prize, a discount voucher to be used at participating Champions IGA stores. Hard copies are available from the council’s offices.

ON THE MOVE: Greater Bendigo council’s Patrick Jess and Craig Neimann are ready to deliver.

BENDIGO’s historic Shamrock Hotel has been given the green light to increase its electronic gaming machines to 65. The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation gave its approval for an additional 20 EGMs at the hotel. Shamrock Hotel owner Jim Hogan said he was pleased with the decision and hoped “to get on” with the larger multimillion dollar project. “It will be a great sell for Bendigo CBD, it will be the first five-star accommodation outside of Melbourne,” he said. “It will certainly attract leading business people and even, Bendigo Tourism is excited. It’s another attraction.” Council had refused to grant the extra machines at a February ordinary meeting, considering them “detrimental to the municipality”. Councillors based their opposition on research and community consultation, which saw 86.4 per cent of respondents indicate opposition to the additional EGMs in a social impact survey. The application was also not supported under council’s Gaming Policy as the hotel is located in an area where additional gaming machines are prohibited. Councillors said the gaming machines were “highly capital intensive” and did not support many jobs relative to revenue. Despite council’s concerns, the VCGLR found the machines were appropriate for the venue and under the municipality’s cap of 756 EGMs. There are 11 venues across the city with a total 614 EGMs in place. Mr Hogan said he thought council had taken the “politically correct” route in opposing the EGMs installation. “To reject all gaming machines is the landscape we are in,” he said. “But the gaming commission found it appropriate to put those machines in. We will be 40 down on the licence approval (105) and it will only marginally increase revenue. But it will reduce my state tax bill and enable me to borrow the money (for the redevelopment).” In November, the Bendigo Weekly revealed the hotel’s $9 million plans to create the city’s first five-star accommodation. The hotel lodged an application with council for stage one of the plan, to build nine serviced apartments in the historic venue. The $4 million stage also includes the installation of an indoor lap pool and gym. The new rooms will be on the first and second floor of the Pall Mall side of the building, in the old Exchange Hotel. Mr Hogan said he was calling on councillors’ “good sense” not to go to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. “It’s all in council’s court and hopefully they will issue a planning permit and not go to VCAT. Then we can make something great happen in Bendigo.” - Christine McGinn

ANZAC DAY 2014

Letter to Bendigo By STEVE KENDALL

BENDIGO’S Sydney Bolitho landed at ANZAC Cove on April 25, 1915, the first day of the battle, as part of the second wave. Within a month he had been promoted to Sergeant and later became Staff Sergeant Bolitho 1104 of the 6th Battalion 1st Australian Imperial Forces. He was born at Orange NSW in April 1889 to Bendigonian Walter Bolitho and Annie Eades and his family returned home to Bendigo, where he attended Violet Street State School. He enlisted at Bendigo, one of the first, on September 12, 1914. While in the trenches at Gallipoli, he penned his poem Gallipoli, which has printed in many Australian newspapers in 1916. S/Sgt Bolitho was badly wounded in the legs at Gallipoli on July 17, 1915 and was transferred via hospitals in Malta and Gibraltar to the AIF headquarters in London where he filled the position of accountant for the remainder of the war. It was some time before his family was able to find out any news, apart from the fact he was classed as seriously wounded. While in London he was able to take part the first anniversary commemoration of the ANZAC Day landings. He wrote of the event to his mother in Bendigo. A commemoration service of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps took place in the venerable and ancient Abbey on 25th April, 1916, just 12 months after our historical landing on that memorable day – just 12 months ago. It was indeed a day to be remembered. Combined with the New Zealanders we numbered 2000 strong, the majority tall, strapping fellows, bronzed and weather-beaten, all war-worn, and bearing marks of the inferno from which they had emerged. Here an arm or a leg missing, there one limping, ‘further on a sling, old soldiers of 18 months’ service and training-only 18 months, but old in the up-to-date game of killing and slayingof suffering and of dying. Glorious indeed was our triumphal march through the principal thoroughfare of this the capital of the world; glorious indeed the cheers, the exultation, the rejoicings of the citizens for whom we came to fight, joyous the cheers on every hand; bordering on hysteria, the never-to-be-forgotten welcome, us it were, and good wishes of the girls and women folk that thronged 20ft. deep our progress.

Quite as loud and more prolonged the vapid ourpourings of the ‘single men’ who either scorn to accept the challenge of the foe, or else, in noise, try and rid themselves of the inherent cowardice that forbids them to join up and fight. Strong words, I know, but let who can deny who has walked through the London streets. Yes, it was a stirring tribute to the

worth of the men from the Southern Cross – a tribute that made them forget – the hideous tragedy of the April to December campaign, and made us feel that, though we had fought and died in vain, we had founded a name that would never be forgotten while our island continent is known in history. Still we were recognised and our magnificent help appreciated by the populace of the ‘wait and see’ islands. Nobody thrills more with pride than the Australian Expeditionary Force at the gallant reply our boys have made to the call of war; nobody felt more the tragic sadness of our service of the 25th than the men who had participated in the premier effort on Gallipoli; nobody paid a greater tribute to the fallen heroes than those who shared their dangers and yet were lucky enough to come through alive. They feted us, they made much of us, and all the time behind the smiling faces that gave back cheer for cheer and smile for smile with the populace that thronged our way, who was not thinking of a comrade gone, a young life lost, a hero dying – as he came to die – and behind it all a contempt too deep for words for the rulers of a nation that would let such blunders be. ‘Boche’ and eagerly waiting the call that was to bring them to grips with the soldiers of the tyrant who is responsible for this world-wide war. When the ‘Last Post’ was played and the last notes of that mournful call had died in echoes through the vast corridors and chapels of the Abbey, we silently marched out to meet once more the cheering populace and reply to the appreciation of the deeds of the Anzacs. It were no use to dwell further on the day. Late in the war S/Sgt contracted tuberculosis in London and was in-

valided home with shell shock and the continued effects of tuberculosis and his wounds. He left England on November 5, 1917 arriving in Australia on December 31. He was finally discharged from the army in June 1918 and died at his mother’s home in Violet Street Bendigo on May 1, 1919, as much a casualty of war as any who had died in battle. Although already discharged Staff Sergeant Sydney Bolitho was given a military funeral at his burial in the White Hills Cemetery.

Tick the box of the plan you prefer GREATER Bendigo council is asking residents to vote for their favourite design for a new splash park at the Long Gully Recreation Reserve. There are three designs including a gold rush theme, giant scorpion and giant spider accompanied by various outdoor play equipment that splashes or sprays water. The Cunneen Street site will also feature a separate traditional playground, barbecue area and landscaping. Playground and splash park specialists Vortex have been awarded the tender to construct the solar-heated splash park, which is expected to take four to five months to complete and will be open in time for summer. Mayor Barry Lyons encouraged people young and old to vote for their favourite design. “This is an exciting project for the Long Gully and Greater Bendigo community,” he said. “The splash park will be the first of its kind for the city and we are encouraging as many people as possible to have their say on the design they would like to see installed. “The designs are family-focused and encourage active play, so infant children through to those in their early teens will benefit. “The splash park’s central location, adjacent to the car park between Cunneen St and the creek, means parents will also be able to supervise their children with ease and have a good line of sight to other parts of the Recreation Reserve.”

Crisis for ambos

By CHRISTINE McGINN

BENDIGO’S Ambulance service is in crisis according to paramedics working at the station. Bendigo paramedics recorded an increase in the number of times additional staff were recalled to work further shifts at the station. Local paramedic Brett Adie said the lack of ambos and resources was the worst he’d seen in his eight years in the job. “By Ambulance Victoria’s own admission, workload increases by seven per cent each year. So we are not keeping up with demand, he said. Ambos reported they were recalled 21 times over 18 days, in March, to meet the influx of community demand. But only on nine of these occasions was a recall crew of two members able to respond. Thirteen of the incidents occurred Monday to Friday with eight on the weekend. As of April 21, 11 recall requests were made at the

station but only three were successfully filled. Mr Adie said the ambulance services’ fix to ensure resourcing met demand – recall – was failing. “It has a large impact on us, because if you come in to fill a recall crew during the day you may not be available for the night shift, so that night shift may

about it, he said. Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said Loddon Mallee region’s ambulance service was “significantly under-funded. “The ambulance services across Loddon Mallee have been indicating for three years that they are under-resourced. The LiberalNational Government has

The system is failing but their fix for the system when it fails is also failing go uncovered because they aren’t able to get those two people who were called in, he said. “Not only is the system failing but their fix for the system when it fails is also failing. Mr Adie said the Bendigo crew needed a full 24hour crew of 11 members to meet the increasing demand. “We’ve known this stuff is going on for years, we’ve seen the problems in the system but we haven’t been allowed to talk to anyone

not put additional funding into resourcing our ambulance service. Ms Edwards said Castlemaine and Maryborough had also been left without adequate coverage. “The over-use of recalling paramedics to work during March and April demonstrates a system under pressure, Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said. A spokesperson for the Minister for Health David Davis said the government had given record funding to

Ambulance Victoria. “Thanks to a $151 million boost by the Coalition, Ambulance Victoria put 4082 more shifts on the road in the Loddon Mallee Region in 2012-13 than it did in 2009-10 – an increase of 12.7 per cent, he said. “Over the past three years the number of paramedics working in the Loddon Mallee region has increased by 20 per cent, an increase of 44 paramedics. The spokesperson said there were 465 additional paramedics on the Victorian roads than under Labor. But Mr Adie said he was concerned about the welfare of his community. “I live here, I have a family here, I have kids. I want to know that when they need an ambulance, I don’t want them to have to wait while Ambulance Victoria makes some phone calls to see if they can get someone to come in and kit out an ambulance. That is not fair. Ambulance Victoria were unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

The now-regular MC is always happy to take part. “This will be the third year I have MCd the Mother’s Day Classic in Bendigo, and again I’m really excited, she said. “I’m always really happy to give up the traditional Mother’s Day breakfast in bed to be part of such a special event, and last year my husband and two sons came along and did the walk, so we made it into a family affair, which many families do. “My son was so pleased to get his medal. Fiona said the first time she attended really made an impression. “I’ll never forget the first year I did it, to see so

THE longest-running annual regional queer film festival in Australia will be in Bendigo once more this weekend. But when co-convenor of the Bendigo Queer Film Festival Chris Walters first came to the city 11 years ago she said there was a definite homophobic attitude. “I remember thinking that I would be very reluctant to come out here, and I didn’t for a while. “I started promoting the Bendigo Queer Film Festival in the newspapers and my mobile phone was in the article. As a result I received quite a few malicious phone calls. But fortunately the festival was a success and there was no trouble. And times now have certainly changed.” “The Bendigo community is very supportive and embracing of our festival,” George Filev, the festival’s other co-convenor

said. “And we have always had the support of the city.” “We endorse every facet of arts,” Gretear Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons said. “During the past 10 years there has been a tremendous increase in participation in the arts in Bendigo. I recently launched the new extension of the art gallery with the premier and I’m just as proud to launch the Bendigo Queer film Festival.” Associated with the festival is The Queer Country Art Exhibition at Dudley House; the opening night party at the ICON Bar and a special BQFF Breakfast at the Basement 50 View street. The festival will be held at Latrobe Visual Arts Centre,View Street. Further details, including a list of the fantastic line up of arthouse films, are on www.bendigoqueerfilmfestival.com.au

EACH year, Bendigo’s State Emergency Service brigade is $5000 short of opening its doors. It costs our local station $35,000 to merely open each year, not including the costs to maintain trucks or replace equipment. Bendigo’s SES volunteer members have to raise the funds to make sure they can safely and responsibly protect the community. Bendigo SES unit controller Fiona Beecham said the service was constantly inventing new ways to fundraise. “We do the tin raffles to provide replacement equipment and training,” she said. “We raise funds until we have enough funds to do the next thing. Next thing is to replace the fourwheel drive. “But funding is always an issue for volunteer groups. But the state (government) expects us to be ready to respond.” The state and local governments both give $15,000 to the station but it remains short of sufficient funding. Ms Beecham said it was a positive arrangement

SES spokesperson Stefan Delatovic said the organisation relied on generous community support. “The extra $5000 is looked at by the group’s needs as business as usual with the stations. They want to provide the best service for their volunteers and community. Each year they put together a plan and decide how much they will need,” he said. “They do really rely on the support from the community. “They are volunteers and benefit so much from

the community’s help.” Last year alone, the local crew attended 124 storm and flood incidents, 35 road rescues and assisted other agencies on 14 times. Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said it was important for the community to support our emergency service volunteers. “Like many of our community services volunteers, they make a huge contribution protecting and supporting the community,” she said. “I know from personal experience, my brother is in the SES, they go out at

all hours of the day and night to respond. “It is important the community recognises their work and gets behind them.” Brimming with 53 operational and two nonoperational members, the crew has ambitions to expand the station. “This is a big, well-used facility, especially once those big jobs are going. We are looking to expand the centre out,” Ms Beecham said. But until the funds are in order, Ms Beecham said they would suffice and continue to puts the community’s needs first.

Hard to claw back reserve In last week’s Letters to the Editor Mr Graham Clark discussed a couple of matters concerning the Rosalind Park Recreation Reserve. Mr Clark was critical of comments attributed to me in the Weekly April 11 about the intrusion into the reserve of the school-bus terminal, and expansion of the BSSC and art gallery which I described as illegal. Mr Clark described my comments as “ridiculous”. He was also concerned about a proposal to relocate the bus terminal to a location in Barnard Street abutting the QEO. I would like to clarify my position. The Rosalind Park Recreation Reserve was created by a special Act of Parliament, and is now administered in accordance with the Crown Land Reserves Act. Of special note is that it is a Reserve for Recreation and Drainage (drainage refers to the fact that the Bendigo Creek passes within the Reserve). As such, the land of the Reserve can only be used for the purposes of recreation which is quite a different proposition to a Public Purposes Reserve which enables land to be used for any public purpose as determined from time to time. The purpose of the Rosalind Park Reserve can only be changed by an act of parliament. The reserve is bounded, in broad terms, by Pall Mall, Bridge Street, Water Street, Barnard Street, and View Street. It is as important to Bendigo as the Fitzroy Gardens is to Melbourne, or St James’ Park is to London. Unfortunately, Bendigo council which is the Committee of Management appointed to administer the Reserve in accordance with the Act and the Rosalind Park Regulations, has regularly and deliberately flouted the law in allowing inappropriate nonrecreation uses to occupy parts of the reserve. It has been able to do this due to the relevant government department – originally the Lands Department, now the Department of Environment and Primary Industries – failing in its duty to ensure the reserve was used for its correct purpose. Both BSSC and Camp Hill Primary School are not part of the reserve. My comment about the BSSC intruding into the reserve relates to an area abutting the school near Park Road where, without authority, the college established a car park and entrance to its trade wing. I know it is hard for people to grasp the full extent of the Rosalind Park Recreation Reserve and to understand the importance of it. Bendigo is most fortunate that in the early days this area of land in the centre of

the city was set aside for recreation which can be both active and passive. It is certainly not a reservation for car parking, or for a bus terminal. The proposal to move the buses to Barnard Street was not my idea – it came from a document produced by the council and released publicly in July last year. While the buses could be located in Barnard Street, I share Mr Clark’s view that it is not a truly practical suggestion. Additionally, I wonder how many people realise that the parking bays alongside the swimming pool and QEO are also an illegal encroachment into the reserve. Finally, Mr Clark, I’m well aware that it is 2014 not 1850. With the council now proposing to convert another hectare of the Rosalind Park Recreation Reserve into a car park and drop-off points for buses and cars to serve the new Gaol Theatre, I only hope that by 2050 the citizens are not looking back and asking what happened to our reserve. It is so easy to “grab” a piece of parkland, and so hard to claw it back. Daryl McClure, Bendigo

Exceeding benchmarks I WRITE in response to the story titled “Beyond the Limit”, Bendigo Weekly, April 11. In its comments, the Health and Community Services Union has selectively used seasonal data on services available for mental health patients in Bendigo to denigrate the hospital and the fine staff working there. On almost every measure, Bendigo Health mental health services meets or exceeds benchmarks – in many cases exceeding the state average. The great work at Bendigo Health has been assisted by a $40.4 million (21.5 per cent) increase in funding from the Coalition Government since 2009-10. Meanwhile, the Victorian Coalition Government is delivering on its $630 million commitment to build a bigger and better hospital in Bendigo, including 75 mental health beds – and a new five bed mother and baby unit. As Minister for Mental Health I am proud of the Coalition Government’s record of investment in the Bendigo region to build a healthier Victoria. Mary Wooldridge, Minister for Mental Health,

munity member who participated and contributed to the success of the event, which is expected to raise $168,019 this year. When 1535 participants in 72 teams camped and relayed overnight, they celebrated cancer survivors and carers, remembered and honoured loved ones, and took steps to fight back against a disease that takes too much. Each year, over 140,000 Australians support Cancer Council’s fight against cancer through Relay For Life. Around the world, people in 25 countries come together at Relay. I am constantly inspired by Relay For Life participants and volunteers, and their dedication to the cause. The money raised at Bendigo Relay For Life will help Cancer Council Victoria provide: • Funding for about 160 talented researchers and their cutting-edge projects each year to help detect, treat and beat cancer. • Important prevention programs like PapScreen Victoria, Quit and SunSmart to make sure people have all the information they need to cut their risk of cancer. • Support services including a free financial counselling service to help those affected by cancer who may be struggling financially. Last year we were able to assist 415 Victorians. In 2014 we are also introducing a probono legal assistance program. • Experienced cancer nurses who answer calls to our Helpline, giving people advice, information and sup-

port. I would encourage Bendigo residents to make use of this service to discuss their cancer-related questions by calling the Helpline on 13 11 20. Again, I would like to sincerely thank the Bendigo community, volunteers, participants and donors involved, as we would not be able to complete the work we do without your support and generosity. No surrender WHEn I learnt that a report had identified the Quarry Hill golf course as a site for possible residential development I wondered if it was an early April fool’s joke. I have been a member of the Quarry Hill Golf Club for 30 years. Like other new members at the club it was the ideal entry level golf club for someone new to the game. The fees were very affordable and the members were friendly and patient with golfers still on golfing L plates. As a club captain I am proud to be a part of a golf club which still extends those same courtesies which were afforded to me and others in the past. I am also proud that we are a family- friendly club which has an all inclusive policy of providing access to the game of golf for all genders, ages, and abilities. Our golf course is also freely

available to visiting green fee golfers, who can enjoy a round for a very affordable $10. For that price they can enjoy a game in the peace and serenity of a bushland setting taking in the sights and sounds of the flora and fauna. To think that our golf course could be re-zoned and bulldozed to provide a shortsighted, quick fix to a perceived housing availability problem beggars belief. During the history of our club there have been countless thousands of hours of volunteer work done by our members in developing and maintaining the day- to-day running of the golf club. If anyone thinks that the golf club members or the community who enjoy use of the golf course are going to meekly surrender to the wishes of bureaucrats then they are deluding themselves. Our golf club was founded in 1921 and one of the founding members was Sir John Quick, who was also heavily involved in the writing of the Australian Constitution. Our clubrooms are named in his honour as is a perpetual trophy awarded annually for men. The ladies also are awarded the Lady Catherine Quick perpetual Trophy. I am in no doubt that Sir John would turn in his grave if he thought the Quarry Hill Golf Course was to be decimated by property developers. Robin A Dobbie, club captain Quarry Hill Golf Club Inc.

One hundred years As Australia starts to mark the centenary of World War I public interest and government backing push the cause to the fore, we are going to hear a lot about war. Certainly, public knowledge has increased, and involvement at marches and commemorations is bigger than it has been in years. Every publication will be presenting its take on suffering and heroics of wars past, the Bendigo Weekly is no exception in this and we are just at the start. World War I broke out in August 1914 and ended at the Armistice on November 11, 1918. With that in mind, we are about to be marking the war for the next four years. Next year is the 100th anniversary of the Dardanelles

campaign. One hundred years since Australians were “blooded in combat at Gallipoli. At the time of the invasion it was reported as a great push forward with “Johnny Turk on the run, the facts were very different. The Australian and New Zealand army corps had indeed landed, but were held up by the terrain and an enemy not ready to roll over. The battle was effectively lost by the end of day one, but high command was in no mood to admit defeat. The whole invasion was a hastily planned, poorly thought out campaign which claimed the lives of 40,000 allied soldiers and at least twice as many Turks, but it was

just a sideshow. Australians who survived went on to other theatres of war, namely the Western Front in France and Belgium. Australians were well thought of in battle, and readily answered the call when it all started up again in 1939. Next came Korea, and once more Australians were in combat. Vietnam was next and since then Australians have fought and died in many countries and theatres of war. This year’s ANZAC Day march commemorates them all with a special focus on a welcome home for the Post-75 veterans. We will never see it, but wouldn’t it be good for a future generation to celebrate 100 years without war?

Opinion Into the future I hAVE lived in Bendigo for the past 17 years, having lived here previously in the mid 1980s and have watched as the town and surrounds have grown into a city. I note now the number of new subdivisions all around Bendigo and the move for higher density living in or near the CBD. I am sure the Greater Bendigo council Planning department looks at the proposals for these new estates and requires provision for public open space, community use buildings and general amenities and the estates are not just as many dwellings as can possibly be squeezed on to the developer’s land. however, the focus of this letter is to draw attention to a number of the road and traffic issues, as needed now – and to allow for Bendigo to grow to the coming population of 150,000. In the general area of central Bendigo I suggest: Mundy street needs reopening as a through street from Pall Mall at least as far as sternberg street. This involves removing the concrete restriction at Myers street (control signals may be needed) and improving the railway crossing (the

best solution here is to make the road an underpass under the rail line). Opening the road would take some pressure off Williamson street and the sternberg street roundabout. At the Mitchell/Wills/ Myer streets intersection, acquire and demolish the derelict hopetoun hotel and straighten out the corner. The Mitchell street bridge over the railway line needs to be widened to four lanes (the roads either side of it are four lanes). In this area, the pedestrian crossing at the beginning of Railway Place urgently needs moving further up Railway Place to the other side of the access road to the Marketplace. This would allow some space for buses and cars without blocking the Mitchell street roundabout as happens now. Footpaths already exist from near the railway bridge to this area – all that is needed, apart from moving the crossing, is to chain off the pedestrian access to the corner itself. The McIvor Road bridge under the railway line needs to be rebuilt, widened to allow four road traffic lanes. The railway bridges in Thistle street, ham street and Chapel street (Kangaroo Flat) have historic significance, but each needs

to be widened, duplicated or alternative arrangements made. In conjunction with the Thistle street bridge, the dog-led intersection with hargreaves street should be attended to by straightening and provision of control signals. The Chapel street situation could be addressed by having an underpass a little further to the south. In a wider view of Greater Bendigo: Maiden Gully may well establish itself as a satellite area of Greater Bendigo as might strathfieldsaye and Epsom/huntly, and of course, we already have Eaglehawk, but the roads for these areas need consideration and planning now. Marong Road, which is currently overloaded and has an uneven surface needs to become four lanes as soon as possible (before the new estates are built). Both strathfieldsaye Road and Napier street/ Northern highway are under review, which is good, but the question remains as to how they will cope into the future. As the old town of Bendigo truly becomes Greater Bendigo, perhaps it is time to look at City Circle routes, connecting the satellite areas to one another and to

the state highway network – without the need to “pass the fountain on the way. An upgrade of the Calder Alternative highway is well overdue. At the Marong end better connection to Allies Road is needed to avoid dangerous turns in the town and to allow traffic better access to the Loddon Valley highway. Further planning is necessary to provide a corridor for this Circle Route corridor from near Big hill around to Longlea and up the side of the Army Reserve and on to connect with existing roads to Epsom/huntly. I realise that, while some of the above falls into council responsibility, much requires the co-operation of various government departments and commitment of funds from local government, state Government and in some cases Federal Government as well. But I ask for consideration of the above by Greater Bendigo council in the first instance, with further interaction with other authorities as appropriate. Bendigo is a beautiful city with many wonderful features and it needs careful, yet visionary and wide ranging planning to keep it so into the future. Tony McDowell, Quarry Hill

WAR MUSEUM

I

T has often been said about World War I that it was a case of lions led by donkeys. The bravest of the brave sent against impossible odds by generals away from the front. With the hindsight of history it seems to be in so many cases quite correct. The books written today use that hindsight to great effect, and some of the contemporary World War I books hold back a bit for the sake of the reader. Penguin, the bastion of spreading affordable reading to the population, has come up with a winner in the re-releasing of a number of titles written just after and during the war to end all wars. It certainly gives an insight into the world as was. Robert Graves was a British poet who saw service as an officer in the war and it had repercussions on a grand scale. His book, part of the Penguin release, is calledGoodbye To All That and is a modern classic. Written in 1929, it charts his life until then. He wrote it at 33, before leaving England to live

in Majorca, where he died in 1985. The title refers to his life to date, but really shows the war changed things for everybody for ever. As a front line officer he was quickly thrown into the maw of trench warfare. His first night in the line he was given command of 800 metres of the front. He did not know the area at all, and spent the night learning the important parts of his role. He survived the war but paints a candid picture of the true horror. There is no need to embellish, the truth is hard enough. He tells of nearly all men hoping for “a cushy one” a light wound which will get them home. That or death, anything but a stomach wound left to die in no man’s land. I have read many war books, but this had an impact all of its own. The description over time of the varied discolouration of a dead fellow officer brings home what these men went through on the front line. Well done Penguin. The Australian part of

the war is finally broadening beyond Gallipoli, but if you want to find out about the Dardenelles campaign there are plenty of old and new works on the subject. The newer titles have the benefit of modern research, and two which shine out as worthy of a read are 36 Days by Hugh Dolan and the Battle for Lone Pine by David Cameron. Cameron charts the four days of the Lone Pine battle in minute detail, seven of Gallipoli’s nine Australian Victoria Crosses were earned in this one battle, it’s easy to see why. Stories of intense handto-hand combat with bodies of wounded and dead comrades underfoot makes reading not for the faint hearted. But it tells of the action with an eye on the need to know what these men went through in our name. Dolan’s 36 Days focusses on the intelligence in the lead up to the invasion. Australian airmen flew over the peninsular spotting for the British (Commonwealth) army, and in most cases their intelligence was not used. The “Donkeys” trusting to lessons they learned in the

A mother’s battle of words

dear dotty...

Annie Bolitho’s sons went to war, it changed their lives, and hers, forever

T

HE story of Bendigo’s Sydney Bolitho in today’s Bendigo Weekly tells of a man who answered the country’s call to arms in 1914. He was one of the first, he signed up for service in September 1914, barely a month after the war started. He was one of the first ashore at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915 and survived unwounded until July when he was hit by shell fragments in the legs. The wound was severe enough for him to be evacuated and he saw no further action in the war. He was hospitalised in Malta for a month and sent to England for recuperation. He was shipped home and invalided out after contracting tuberculosis, that, with the wounds still troubling him, and the after-effects of shell shock exhausted him. Though the tales of heroism on the front are filled with death and glory, perhaps an equal battle was fought on the home front. Sydney’s father, Walter died while Sydney was overseas. The two did not meet after Sydney went to war.

Sydney was wounded on July 18, 1915 and on August 3 a letter arrived at the Bolitho family home in Violet Street, Bendigo informing them of his severe wounds. Sydney’s mother Annie wrote asking for further details on August 8, sister Elsie had written to Defence base records a couple of days earlier. The two followed up by sending more letters saying they had received no details. Elise called on the help of MP for Bendigo Alfred Hampson who took up the cause for more information. By August 18 Annie was still none the wiser. She wrote in a letter to Defence: Surely there has been time now for a reply. The suspense is terrible, I am not in good health. We are hoping, therefore to get news as speedily as possible. Finally on September 2 news arrived saying Sydney had been sent to hospital in England. Can you imagine the strain of waiting this long for information on a wounded son? Eventually Sydney arrived home, but Annie Bolitho’s

battle was not yet over. Sydney spent the final year of his life as an invalid. Sydney was a weakened man and died at home on May 1, 1919. Annie then took up the fight for her dead son’s medals, and recognition of his service. These arrived in the early 1920s. Perhaps the biggest battle fought was the one for a pension for the loss of her son’s earnings. It was decided in authority not to pay as Sydney had been overpaid as an invalid and

while in hospital. Annie continued the fight, by now she was blind in one eye and nearly blind in the other, but she engaged the help of Bendigo MP and Prime Minister Billy Hughes who, as records show, suggested the pensions board reconsider. The payment of 24 shillings a week was granted. Annie Bolitho had given a son to the war, lost a husband and had to justify a pension. She died in 1939. The war at home was not easy. twitter: @stevekendall1

Dear Dotty, Every day I go for a walk with my dog I take a plastic bag with me and I very conscientiously place the dog’s excreta in it and then carry it home. I always feel very conspicuous and embarrassed. Any suggestions? Rodney Hi there Rodney, I have trouble with this one too. My latest trick is to stand there, intently watching my dog while he does his business, with the bag at the ready. I then wait until there are no people around and keep walking. But that is not a very nice thing to do. You buy a hat with a very high brim and make a special, hidden storage compartment under the brim. You put the poo in the bag, slip it in the hidden compartment and walk around with poo on your head. Dear Dotty, I have been an admirer of yours for a long time. If I were to take you out on a date what sort of night would you enjoy? Jerry Dear Harrison, I could never go out with anyone called Jerry. Men called Jerry usually pride

You can have it both ways! Both print and online advertising have their benefits, so the smart approach is to include both in your marketing mix. It’s hard to beat the targeting potential, longevity, and true reader engagement that can only come from quality print and online advertising.

themselves on their barbecue and talk in a big booming voice over the top of everyone else. But if I did go out with you it would be very expensive. Dear Dotty, I was really jealous when we were out with rather posh people at dinner and they were talking about a tropical island they had bought together. Although my husband and I go on nice holidays to Phuket I think we’re out of our league, what should I do? Christine Dear Christine, You should have waited for a pause in the conversation and then told them that you two also have an island – in the middle of your kitchen. twitter: @DearDotty

Attack and awe

THE MORRISONS

M

ELBOURNE based five piece band ,The Morrisons, are best described as an attack and awe band. Short, sharp, punk rock blows with all tracks under the two and a half minute mark on their debut, full

length release CD, Hard Hoarse. Live, they put on a show with no mucking around. Energetic, frenzied attack is their modus operandi, a fact that is clearly evident from the first harrowing, hard-hitting chords

delivered on the album. Join them as they play songs off Hard Hoarse at The Bridge Hotel Castlemaine on Friday. Entry is $10, doors at 8.30pm. – Lou Risdale

A special launch at Dymocks T

HERE will be a launch of children’s non-ficton books at Dymocks this Saturday. Shona Innes is a Bendigo children’s psychologist and over the years has written to young clients concerning their problems. Consequently she has written

four books based on their preoccupying issues. The two first books to be launched are Friendship is Like a See Saw and Life is Like the Wind. There will be two more books due in October – The Internet is like a Puddle and The Playground is

Like a Jungle. La Trobe university children’s literature specialist, Sarah Mayor Cox, will be speaking and introducing the books. The launch is this Saturday (April 26) from 11.30am at Dymocks in Mitchell Street.

SPIRING artists wishing to perform as part of this year’s Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival have until the end of April to get their applications in. Interest has been far-reaching and diverse with performers from all over Australia, and some internationals, formally expressing their interest in coming to Bendigo to play. “This truly home-grown festival continues to grow its support base and will keep delivering an amazing array of musical talent for all age groups and all sectors of the community to enjoy,” festival director Colin Thompson said. “Greater Bendigo council has demonstrated its recognition too. “As well as increased in-kind support through partnership with Bendigo Tourism, the major events team has committed to triple their previous financial sponsorship, to assist with the many costs involved in staging and marketing a predominantly free music festival.” Mr Thompson said Bendigo Bank has again confirmed its support. “The consensus in the feedback provided from all directions is that our crew have so far delivered an event that’s way beyond reasonable expectations; especially considering we’re a group of volunteers running a quality music festival as a not-forprofit organisation,” Mr Thompson said. “The most exciting thing for me

has been witnessing the increased interest in live music over the past few years in Bendigo and the amount of live shows and festivals increasing. “We’re literally coming together as a community to achieve great things that, on our own as individuals, we couldn’t possibly have tackled. It doesn’t matter what kind of music you’re into, if you look you’ll find it being staged on a regular basis in Bendigo.” Applications are also open for blues guitarists aged 25 or less to be involved in the Lazenby Young Blues Guitarist Award – the first official heat of which will be held as part of BB & RMF’s next Showcase event at the Rifle Brigade Hotel on Sunday, May 25 from noon. Following on from the recent successes of the first Rock In The Vines festival staged in March, the Rifle Brigade Hotel is hosting Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival’s fourth Showcase event of the year also on Sunday, May 25. “There will be live tunes from BB & RMF featured acts, performing in the car park and in the Al Fresco area on View Street, from noon through till 7.30pm. “Once again the performers are donating their time and talents to help fund BB & RMF. Admission is only $10 per adult to enjoy up to 14 brilliant acts.” Find out more via www.bendigobluesandroots.com.au

W I N T E R AUTO SAFETY

Bendigo Weekly – Thursday, April 24, 2014

On the road to safer and cheaper motoring

W

INTER brings its own hazards to motoring safety due to decreased visibility and wetter weather. But there is more to winter auto safety than just checking your tyres and lights and that’s where the services of a professional are needed. Both for the reliability and resale of your vehicle as well as the safety of you, your family and other road uses. But remember to be realistic as modern vehicles are quite sophisticated and problems may not be immediately obvious. Diagnosing a car’s faults is not always straightforward and repair costs may increase with the age of your vehicle. Delays can occur with difficulty in obtaining parts and while new parts are often preferable, sometimes they are not practical or economically viable. Secondhand parts can be used if they are in good

IN CONTROL: Keep your car running smoothly. working condition. Keeping your car running smoothly and economically can depend on the relationship you have with your dealership or mechanic. Below are several tips to help reduce service costs. Provide as much information as possible this will make it easier for them to identify faults. Inform your mechanic or dealer when the problem occurs, for example, cold mornings. Go for a drive with the repairer to point out any

problems and remember to, point out anything that needs checking – don’t assume problems will be found. With major repairs request a written quote that includes: work to be done, parts to be supplied, estimated time of completion, estimate of cost for both parts and labour. And ask your mechanic to contact you before doing any work outside the quote. This way you’ll help alleviate any unpleasant surprises when you pick up your vehicle.

AURIE Truant of Maurie Traunt Motors has been servicing motor vehicles under his own name for 17 years after working at some of Bendigo’s busiest dealerships. In the early 1970s Maurie returned to Bendigo and worked for the General Motors Dealership for nine years before joining Bendigo Toyota. Perhaps that explains Maurie’s preference for vehicles wearing a Toyota badge, thankfully though Maurie still services other popular brands including Holden, Hyundai, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Subaru . Maurie specialises in routine log-book servicing and will use genuine parts where necessary or requested, to ensure you don’t void your new car warranty. “While most drivers think of running costs, motorists should also be aware of

HIS is Pug – he’s 10 (56 in doggy years). To his right is Roger 11 (61 in doggy years). And next to him is Turbo, aged 16 (80 in doggy years). The boys are getting old and starting to feel the odd ache and pain. The best part of the day for them now is when they put on their slippers and curl up for a sleep. As owners you can help them through the senior years. If your best friend is seven years or older then it’s time for their seniors wellness exam. As our pets grow older we expect to see some changes, but what is normal aging? And how do we best care for them at this life-stage? There is great variation in our dogs’ and cats’ life expectancy but as a general rule any pet seven years or older is considered middle-aged or old-aged. Normal changes include gradual hearing

loss, greying fur, particularly around the muzzle, loss of muscle tone and a blue appearance to the eyes. However there are many diseases that can also cause these or similar changes. Here at Bendigo Animal Hospital we recommend a Seniors Examination every twelve months and in some cases every 6 months to monitor change. These examinations are a great opportunity for you to receive tailored information on how to accommodate your pet’s changing dietary, exercise and environmental needs. Prevention of disease or early detection is the best way to keep your furry family friends happy and healthy. www.bendigohospital.com.au ph 5443 3322

An original ANZAC W

ITH ANZAC Day almost here, it is appropriate to look at a segment of the life from a Bendigonian who served not only at Gallipoli but also on the Western Front. Our subject is a young man, Charles Albert Johnstone, his family name has been also miss-spelt as Johnston. Mr Johnstone was born on July 23, 1893, the family lived along the Back Creek on the corner of Havlin and Hallam streets. The Back Creek incidentally was also called Spring Creek, or Spring Gully Creek, with the area being renamed Kennington at the turn of the 20th century. Mr Johnstone had attended the Gravel Hill State School, and later followed his father into becoming a sign writer, which had earned the family a good reputation over a few generations. Curiously when Mr Johnstone enlisted as a volunteer for what became known as the Great War, his occupation was given as a miner. Mr Johnstone signed up for military service on September 12, 1914, he was among many young men from the Bendigo area keen to do his bit for King, country and the empire. The 4th Light Horse was to be the Regiment to which

he had been assigned, after initial training Mr Johnstone, along with his fellow trainees, was to be shipped to Egypt, as Turkey had entered the war on the side of Germany. The regiment boarded a ship originally called the Sumatra, which was a captured German vessel and had been renamed HMAT Barunga A43. The ship was of 7484 tons and had a cruising speed of about 20 kilometres per hour. On disembarkation in Alexandria, Egypt, the regiment along with their horses underwent acclimatisation and further training at a camp close to Cairo and within sight of the pyramids. After their training period the regiment was then shipped without their horses to become part of the Gallipoli invasion force. Mr Johnstone like all the other Australians and New Zealanders was to face a barrage of fire of wellentrenched Turkish forces upon landing. As Charles later recounted there were many close shaves on and following that April 25 day in 1915. As the opposing forces had expected some form of incursion, the military aims of the expedition were not to be realised and as is now known, was a complete fiasco. Upon evacuation of

the Gallipoli peninsula the Anzacs were again on the high seas, returning to Egypt before being transported to Europe and the Western Front, where Mr Johnstone was to experience further trench warfare. The shells in the trenches bursting so close with a commanding officer alongside him having been killed. On another occasion another person from his unit was seriously wounded immediately next to Charles. It is little wonder that these and other similar experiences were to have a severe impact on such young men as he.

Private Johnstone’s health deteriorated, he was sent to Britain to be hospitalised. From the United Kingdom he was to be repatriated home to Australia having been placed on the HM

Hospital Ship Oxfordshire in late 1916. From the ship several communications were sent from the various ports where it called, including one from Malta, he having written to his mother stat

ing, “I am suffering from septile debility and a nervous condition‌I am very thin and had many narrow escapes. ‌ The nursing sisters of the hospital are marvellous for the manner in which they care for their patients; from your loving son Charlieâ€?.

NEW website will be launched on Friday to tell the story of those who served in World War I It is a collaboration between the Bendigo District RSL and the Greater Bendigo council to gather and tell stories from the Bendigo region that detail the role local soldiers played in the war and other conflicts since that time. “It’s important to preserve the ANZAC history for future generations, mayor Barry Lyons said. “Through the new website we are appealing to the community to send in their own or their family’s stories from all of the conflicts that have occurred over the past 100 years. “This can be easily done by visiting www.anzaccentenarybendigo. com.au and accessing the online request forms. “It’s a fantastic initiative to educate our local community about the people from Bendigo who were involved in World War I and gather our history and stories for the future. He said the new website contains an overview of Anzac history, stories about local diggers and the role local women have played in war. There is also advice and links to organisations so that people can trace their own family connections.

foodfossickers Culinary questions with Jody and Brent Loam of the Willow Room, Heathcote Q. What is confit? A. Confit is one of the oldest forms of preserving foods. Usually meats and seafood are prepared this way, but you can confit fruits and vegetables also. Often the meat is salted overnight in an aromatic brine to help the preserving process and for flavour. It is then cooked under oil or its own melted fat at a low temperature for a long time. This breaks down the proteins and helps tenderise the meat. The meat is then let

to cool in the fat and set, preserving the meat. Most busy kitchens these days use this process as it’s a delicious way of preparing food. It is for taste, not so much for the preserving quality as the food is turned over so quickly. Q. What are some things to do with mushrooms? A. As autumn has set in, we are now in mushroom season. If you can try and get hold of some foraged pine or slippery

jack mushrooms, they are fantastic. Mushrooms are great to confit, especially large field or swiss browns. I confit them in vegetable stock with lots of garlic, thyme, tarragon and butter and serve on wet polenta. Top flat mushrooms with a pancetta, chestnuts and sage stuffing then bake in the oven. Chargrilled mushrooms are great on toast with a poached egg. Even pickled mushrooms make an easy addition to an antipasto plate.

Local food industry insider with Marika McMahon

To dunk or not to dunk H

OPEFULLY you and your family were some of the thousands who were out and about in the glorious weather during the Bendigo Easter Festival. There were a few food highlights as part of the festival too. The restaurants were pumping and the food stalls in Sidney Myer Place were full of great food options. My Facebook feed was filled with locals raving about the Gozleme - a Turkish savoury pastry dish that was delicious. I just wish there had been space for more meals over the Easter weekend as I also would have liked to try a few curries from the food truck. It seems too long to wait until next year, maybe it’s time to get moving on that idea I had of Bendigo hosting a food truck/food stall festival. Now that Sun Loong has gone to sleep and Easter is finished, we have a quick turn around until ANZAC Day. Looks like there are many people planning on heading to the dawn service, with cafÊs opening early to feed them breakfast afterwards. Brewhouse is opening at 4.30am, it’s never too early for coffee. I’ve already baked the first batch of Anzac biscuits, they’ll be filling the lunchboxes

ANZAC BISCUITS: The big question.

this first week back to school. Every year I forget what Anzac recipe I used the previous year and out come the cookbooks. The one used for the first batch now has a cross through it, too dry and crumbly even with extra butter. There’s great debate within our family as to how your Anzacs should turn out. I love them pale and soft. Mum loves them crispy and flat. And of course should you dunk them or not. As well as finding the

perfect recipe this year I will be repeating one Anzac-ish recipe I loved from last year - Donna Hays Anzac caramel slice. Think your usual caramel slice but with a base made of Anzac mixture. And it is possible to take caramel slice to the next level - add Murray River salt flakes to the caramel. So, I shall be channelling my inner Grace Sullivan and baking this Anzac Day, with a constant supply of coffee from early in the morning.

Victoria misses out in lacrosse By JOEL PETERSON

WESTERN Australia and South Australia were the big winners at last weekend’s Australian under-18 Lacrosse championships, held at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve. WA took out the boys’ title defeating Victoria, while SA got over the line against WA in the girls’ final. Eight teams, including girls and boys sides from New Zealand, squared off in the four-day championships. South Australia’s girls side were cruelly denied an

undefeated championships run, when incorrect rules were applied in their semi final against WA. After the game was tied at 6-all the contest went to overtime and SA drew first blood, and seemingly should have won the match, with a golden goal rule in place for overtime periods in these championships. However, the game continued, and WA took an 8-7 win before the SA girls took revenge in the final, the first time Victoria has not played off in the decider in nearly a decade. The championships

were the first to be hosted in regional Victoria. Greater Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons said at the opening ceremony that the tournament would create local interest in the sport. “We’ve become the centre of events in regional Victoria. There’s hardly a weekend that goes by that we don’t have a major event, and this is a major event,” he told the Australian Lacrosse Association’s website. “It (lacrosse) just needs a bit of a bump and with an event like this it will create a lot of local interest.”

Chasing the winning feel

CLOSE AIM: The Lady Braves lost to Ballarat on April 5.

THE Bendigo Bank Braves and Champions IGA Lady Braves will both look to recapture that winning feeling this weekend, when both sides take on Nunawading and Geelong in a tough slate of round five games. The Lady Braves went down in a thriller to Ballarat by two points on April 5, while the Braves were defeated at home by Mount Gambier on April 12 in their last hit out. The Easter break allowed Lady Braves coach Jonathan Goodman and his side time to recharge the batteries ahead of taking on SEABL East conference leaders Geelong in Bendigo on Sunday. “I am really glad we had the break, it couldn’t have come at a better time,” he said. “It just gave everyone a chance to recharge, and concentrate on what we

need to do. “To be honest I think our season really starts now, this weekend will be the first time we will have our entire team together and we have no injuries, so it’s a really exciting time.” Goodman is under no illusion the challenge the side faces this weekend, having to travel to Nunawading to take on the Spectres on Saturday night before battling the Supercats on Sunday. Both teams are stacked with WNBL-quality talent, Nunawading sporting the dynamic duo of Rebeccas, Cole and Allen, while Geelong has Sara Blicavs and Tayla Roberts suiting up. “We really have to be able to stop Nunawading’s scoring power, because with Allen, Cole and Eleanor Brentnall they have plenty of scoring options and are very versatile,“ Goodman said.

“Obviously Geelong is a talented side, and with a new coach coming in for the game we have not seen them so it is hard to get a read on how they will play.” Currently sitting at 3-1 from four games, two wins would see the Lady Braves rocket into contention for top spot in the South Conference. Goodman said two wins from the weekend would be ideal, but he expects to win at least one game. “We have to be able to split the weekend, when you play two tough teams like this in a home-away double you want to at least split it,” he said. The Braves and Lady Braves host Geelong at Bendigo Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with the Lady Braves versus Lady Supercats clash tipping off at 12pm.

Powerful start puts Eaglehwak on a high EAGLEHAWK will look to continue its great start to season 2014 in a huge ANZAC Day clash with Kangaroo Flat on Friday night. The Borough has started the season with a bang, winning two of its first three games, and taking it right up to pre-season flag fancy Strathfieldsaye in its lone loss. Fielding a young and exciting side, senior coach Luke Monaghan says he has not been surprised by the start his team has put together. “I’m probably a bit surprised in how we have been able to gel together,” Monaghan, one of only two 2013 coaches to return for season 2014 in the BFNL, said this week.

“It’s a pretty young side and although we have brought a few recruits in I think we played 12 players in the first game against Kyneton who didn’t play in our last game last season. “It’s a new group but I’ve backed the boys in, and I know that there is a lot of talent at the club throughout all three grades of footy.” Eaglehawk started the season beating Kyneton by 26 points after a 52-point second half turnaround, then narrowly lost to Strathfieldsaye at home after a huge last term fightback in round two, before smashing South Bendigo by 53 points at the weekend. The midfield group of Josh

Ketterer, Brodie Filo, Ben McPhee, young ruckman Cody West and Brodie Collins has been a shining light for the Two Blues early in the season, as has the Luke Button-led back six. After leading by 10-goals at half time, the Borough did not replicate its first half form after the main break. “We had a few lapses in the second half and a few things we can work on, I was disappointed with that,” he said. “I thought Brenton Conforti probably played his best game for the club at the weekend, and Tyler Miles gets the job done every week and is just great to coach.” Eaglehawk’s clash with Kan-

garoo Flat is one of two big ANZAC Day games in the BFNL, with Golden Square travelling to Gardiner Reserve to take on Gisborne in the battle of the Bulldogs. “Kangaroo Flat are probably the most improved side in the competition,” Monaghan said. “I think the big thing will be cutting off the supply to their forward line, because they can really get on top of you if you don’t.” In other round four games Castlemaine tackles Strathfieldsaye, Kyneton looks for its first win against the similarly winless South Bendigo on Saturday and Sandhurst hosts Maryborough at the Queen Elizabeth Oval on Sunday.

Holding on to top spot From Page 32 Henzell, the top seed, beat third seed and compatriot Kane Townsend (11-5, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8) to keep his record of being the only player to ever win the tournament going. In the Women’s Singles gold medal contest, second seed Jian Fang Lay overcame 2013 runner-up Li Chunli in a nail-biting final (11-9, 5-11, 11-2, 11-8, 10-12, 8-11, 12-10). An ecstatic Lay said she had waited a long time for her first Oceania Championships title. “I’m so excited, I have waited for this championship title for a long, long time,” she said. “I have lost many times during the finals but today, I had a little bit of luck and won the last point.” In the 16 competitions in which Australia was eligible to compete, in claimed gold in all, including both team finals. Henzell, 32, defeated the 21-year-old Townsend in the final, but needed every bit of his experience to do so, despite believing his level of play has dropped since the 2012 London Olympics. “I didn’t keep my level, I think for the last couple of years, it has definitely dropped,” he told the ITTF website. “Since then I have been just trying to maintain my level as best as I can, so I am still training hard, been hitting a lot with David Powell but it’s slipping and I just have to trust my experience in matches like this.” Henzell and Lay both booked tickets to the ITTF World Cup in October by virtue of their wins, and Lay will also travel to the Commonwealth Games this year in Glasgow where she is expected to be a medal contender. Third place in the singles titles went to David Powell and Zhenhua Dederko, defeating Phillip Xiao and Melissa Tapper in the third-place playoffs.

Still chasing a win By JOEL PETERSON

FC Bendigo coach Steve Martin is confident of securing the club’s first win in the coming weeks. The fledgling side has drawn one and lost three of its first four games, but has led in all four contests. Bendigo sits in 12th out of 14 NPL1 teams and is one of three sides yet to register a win, but has not lost a game by more than one goal. The team did not play over Easter, allowing for some much-needed rest after a busy start to the season. “The week off was a good thing for us, it just allowed us to refresh and concentrate on improving,” Martin said. “We have taken a lot from the first four games of the season that we feel will definitely translate to our next four weeks of games.” Lapses of concentration have been the team’s biggest issue so far, squandering several second-half leads. “It is an issue, and one that we are working on. It’s really disappointing to put ourselves in the position and then see it fall away. “I thought our first half against St Albans was our best half of football, and then we came out in the second half a completely different side.

“We are putting things in place to ensure it does not happen again.” Richmond SC travels up the Calder for FC Bendigo’s second home game this week, and presents the club’s best chance for its first win. “I’m confident that we can get a result in the next few weeks, we are improving every week and I think we aren’t far off that first win,” Martin said. “We have to continue the improvement and just get rid of these costly lapses during games, and I think we will be well on our way to having success in the short term, as well as building a sustainable club in the future.” Richmond has won a game but sits in 11th on the table, with a goal difference of -7. “I would not say it is our best chance for a win because I think every side is competitive, and think we can compete with any side on our day,” Martin said. “It will be good to be back at home, and hopefully we can get a similar amount of support to what we got for our first home game, because it really spurred the boys on.” FC Bendigo takes on Richmond SC from 7pm on Saturday night at Tom Flood Sports Centre.
