FOR A CAUSE LOYAL SUPPORT: Kathryn Wright is still fighting breast cancer, but has a great team in her corner. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

By STEVE KENDALL

TEAM Kath is up and running for the Mother’s Day Classic, with about 80 expected in the team on Sunday. It’s all for Kathryn Wright, who has had her family and friends rallying behind her since her diagnoses with breast cancer 18 months ago. At 30, Kathryn is young to have the disease, and is still un-

dergoing treatment. “No beating about the bush, they’re trying to save my life,” she said. Bendigo-born Kathryn has nothing but praise for the support she’s received. “Everyone’s been great, but my husband, the amazing Michael, has been too much. He’s the best person I have ever met, I couldn’t have asked for a better husband.”

The Golden Square couple first met at high school 14 years ago. “People have rallied around since I was diagnosed, and at the moment I feel absolutely fine. “To be honest, when I was diagnosed at 28 it was the last thing I expected to happen.” With the Mother’s Day Classic a couple of days away, Kathryn is ready for the big event. “I’m excited about doing the

run, but only four kilometres. I couldn’t manage eight,” she said. “Team Kath has raised $7500 so far, and it’s a good cause.” There is still time to join in with Team Kath, you can run 8km, or run or walk 4km. Event co-ordinator Gaye Harrington said the Mother’s Day Classic takes place this Sunday, with the longer run starting at 8am and the shorter run and walk at 9am.

“We expect about 2000 people running or walking on the day,” she said. “If you don’t want to walk or run, you can come along and support all taking part and join in the entertainment and activity taking place around the course,” Gaye said. The Weekly look at the local real estate market

Sale shows CBD plus A LOCAL investor has swept up Bendigo’s “Golden Key” commercial building in a historic sale. The 20th Century, red brick property cornering Hargreaves and Mitchell streets sold for $1.615 million at auction last Friday. Four bidders showed strong interest as the property went under the hammer for only the third time in 110 years. Tweed Sutherland First National director Craig Tweed said the local businessman wanted to further unlock the property’s potential. “It is a very historic building in Bendigo and was built for one of the Lansell family members,” he said. “It is a one-off building in terms of its design and its position in the CBD is very strong. This sale confirms the strength of investment in our CBD.” Mr Tweed said the new owner indicated a desire to renovate the top floor into an office or residential space. Despite the change of owners, Mr Tweed said it was business as usual for the tenants who include Colliers Shoes. “One of the strength of the

properties is the tenants and their long-standing terms in that building,” he said. The separate tenants will remain in the building.

A FIVE-LOT subdivision is underway in Quarry Hill, breathing new life into the area. Four new double-storey homes are under way on Houston Street with a fresh modern twist set to attract young professionals and families. Two three-bedroom and

two, two-bedroom dwellings will sit on the property, ranging in size from 208 square metres to 377m2. Each home features openplan living with a kitchen, meals and living area, laundry walk in robes, retreat and garage. Owner Richard Favaloro

said the homes were in a good location, close to Bendigo’s CBD and schools. “There are three different linear designs on the homes and a matrix design on one of the homes,” he said. “The homes are a contemporary design and will have a modern look. “The blocks are actually quite large and families will enjoy the homes.” The existing two-bedroom weatherboard home with a bullnose verandah and wrought iron lacework will remain at the front of the property. The development is considered a ideal use of the property and aligns with the Quarry Hill Residential Character Policy.

STATE BUDGET

Funding plus for new pool By CHRISTINE McGINN

THE State Government has been forced to give 50 per cent more to the Kangaroo Flat indoor pool project. The government announced $15 million for the Greater Bendigo Indoor Aquatic and Leisure and Wellbeing Centre plan in its budget. Greater Bendigo council originally asked for a three-way split on the $30 million project, between it, the state and federal governments. However, Sport and Recreation Minister Damian Drum said the State Government had decided to give more after the previous and current federal governments were not interested in the project. “Since coming into government, the Abbott government has effectively not shown any inclination at all and are not prepared at all to join in this project,” he said. “So we have made the decision that if this project is going ahead, it will just have to go ahead with the two partners (state government and council) and that is the proposal we

have been working on now for the past four or five months.” Mr Drum said they worked the budget to ensure they could accommodate $15 million to ensure it didn’t sink. “Ultimately it is not the State Government’s role to pick and chose projects, what we have to do is listen to the community,” he said. “We have seen the community be very vocal on this project. They got behind this project and effectively argued to the council that they wanted a 50 metre indoor and outdoor pool... the hamburger with the lot. “Council has taken this project and it has steadily risen to become the city’s top priority for 18 months.” Greater Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons said it was a “fantastic commitment” and they would lobby the federal government. “Without funding support from the State Government the likelihood of this project being completed anytime in the foreseeable future was extremely remote indeed.”

MAKING A SPLASH: The pool announcement caused great excitement. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN Liberal candidate for Bendigo East Greg Bickley said it was an important infrastructure project for Bendigo. The centre will feature an eight-lane 50m swimming pool, children’s play area and pool, gymnasium, change rooms and child-

care facilities. The funding has been locked in and does not depend on the outcome of the November state government election. But council will still only fund $10 million for the project. The budget also announced a

Secret investigation into complaint By ANTHONY RADFORD

GREATER Bendigo council has secretly approved a private investigation into the Amicus complaints against two of its councillors. The Bendigo Weekly believes the council last month voted behind closed doors to go ahead with the independent investigation into the complaint against councillors Helen Leach and Elise Chapman. The $6000 report will be used by council to decide whether or not any further action will be taken against the two. The Weekly revealed the full details of the Amicus complaint in March. Amicus executive officer Ann-Maree Davis wrote to then-mayor Lisa Ruffell on March 19 last year to complain about the alleged actions of the two at an event the previous day.

Amicus provides services and support for disabled people, and was a key player in a diversity event held in Hargreaves Mall. Ms Davis defined the two councillors’ actions as “inappropriate conduct” and alleged they made remarks to staff about an Amicus client who was dancing to music. “The public was encour-

“Staff from Amicus were approached by Helen Leech (sic) after the first performance and in the words of staff ‘berated’ them, stating ‘that is enough’ and ‘how disgusting it was that we let her do that’, ‘that we should not exploit her in that manner’. “They were then approached by Elise Chapman who told staff to ‘stop her’ (par-

Staff advised both councillors that they found their reaction totally inappropriate aged to be involved in the performance and one of the people with a disability supported by Amicus took up this invitation,” Ms Davis said. “What happened next is of great concern as it seems that both councillors took offence to the participation of this young woman and her style of dance.

ticipation) and ‘how disgusting it was in front of a priest’. “Staff advised both councillors that they found their reaction totally inappropriate and quite discriminating.” Cr Chapman and Cr Leach both denied the claims at the time. “It says we treated a disabled person inappropriately, but it doesn’t tell us what we

did,” Cr Chapman said. “It said I spoke to a staff member after the first performance. “I left after the first performance. “Why would I ask staff to stop the girl if the dance had already finished? I didn’t even know there was a priest there. “I didn’t do it and I wouldn’t do it.” Cr Leach was just as emphatic. “I definitely deny this complaint,” she said. “It is false.” Council was criticised for its handling of the complaint, with an independent panel making a finding of misconduct against Cr Ruffell, a finding currently under appeal. All three councillors said they were unable to comment on the new investigation. A spokesman said the council would not be commenting “as this is a confidential matter”.

$6 million truck rest parking area will be built on the Calder Highway in Ravenswood. Eaglehawk Primary School is set to receive $1.6 million to upgrade its facilities and $1.9 million will be given to Quarry Hill Primary School.

Budget cash soaked up DESPITE high hopes, the Bendigo Tennis Centre, Botanic Gardens and local roads didn’t recieve funding in the State Government’s budget. Greater Bendigo council wanted to receive funding for local roads across the growth corridors Strathfieldsaye, Maiden Gully and Epsom/ Huntly to ensure the infrastructure met population growth. Mayor Barry Lyons said they also wanted funding to increase police resources in the region, expand primary and secondary schools and to complete the Regional Rail Project. “Our Draft Council Plans sets an aspirational goal for us to be the most liveable regional city in Australia and funding support for these types of projects will play a big part in helping us to achieve this outcome,” he said. But none of the priorities raked in any extra cash after the larger budget splash for the Greater Bendigo Indoor Aquatic Lesiure and Wellbeing Centre. Cr Lyons said he had not expected any additional funding for the Bendigo Airport project in the state’s buget. “We are keen though to hear from the Federal Government on funding for the Bendigo Airport redevelopment, which is a project of regional significance,” Cr Lyons said.

Canterbury Park reaps cash reward

The human scarecrow

CANTERBURY Park is set to get a $4.2 million upgrade, with works to start tomorrow. Nicholson Constructions won the tender to redevelop the Eaglehawk community park. Greater Bendigo councillors endorsed the award at this week’s meeting, noting the significance of Eaglehawk to Bendigo in the coming years. New netball courts, change facilities, multipurpose cricket nets, car parks, footpaths, event spaces, bowling green, roadways and landscaping will mark stage one and two of the project. Cr James Williams said Eaglehawk would continue to contribute to the growth of the municipality through this development.

I am very proud of this... I look forward to seeing it progress

HE drives up to the lake in a Greater Bendigo council ute with a green kayak perched on top. He gets out, puts the boat in the water, and smoothly and silently paddles across to the island. The trickiest part of his operation is next, getting off the kayak and trudging through the soft mud to harder ground. From there, he unfolds a director’s chair, takes out a book, adjusts his beanie and settles in. Meanwhile, birds, lots of birds, fly overhead. It is late in the day and they would usually land on the island, but are unsure of their new guest. Instead, the birds continue their journey, landing on another island nearby, one that is a lot more dangerous. This is the regular job of Bendigo’s new human scarecrow. About two nights a week, for one and a half hours at a time, the council employee visits the Lake Tom Thumb island as part of an attempt to scare the birds away. In November, the Bendigo Weekly revealed the locals were fed up with the bird infestation on the island.

ON THE MOVE: Birds look for another home. In 2007, council acted to rid Eaglehawk’s Lake Neanger’s island of a native bird infestation. Six years later, the problem merely shifted 460 metres to the neighbouring Lake Tom Thumb. Locals were angry at the incessant noise, acidic smell and the lack of council action to quell the breeding island. Council Parks and Natural Reserves manager Simon Harrison said the human scarecrow

Some stop at the former Lake Neanger island, but don’t stay long, as it is connected to the mainland and open to people and predators. “We will continue to do this as long as it takes,” Mr Harrison said. “The only downside is we have to use a kayak because the boat we had chained up there was stolen.”

approach was delivering the best results in the push to move the birds on. “We are finding this works quite successfully,” he said. “It has only been happening in the past couple of weeks, in the lead up to breeding season. “We have reduced the population significantly.” Mr Harrison said some of the birds were migrating to the nearby landfill or to the Coliban Water ponds site in Epsom.

“Eaglehawk has a huge future in the development of the city and this will be a fantastic development for the Bendigo community,” he said. Cr Elise Chapman agreed, pleased that people would have a new space to stay active. “This will be a wonderful place where people can participate in recreational activities. I am very proud of this development and I look forward to seeing it progress,” she said. The State Government’s Department of Sport and Recreation has chipped in $650,000 to the project. Cr Rod Fyffe praised the many hands involved in the project. “I thank councillors for all their involvement. If it was to be done, we wanted to do it properly and do it once. This is an investment that will pay dividends for years to come,” he said. “This is the type of development we should be looking at for Greater Bendigo for years to come.” Sport and Recreation Minister Damian Drum and councillors will officially launch the redevelopment tomorrow at 11am at the site. Elders of the forest

THAT Bendigo is filled with historic buildings is a given, but what could be easily described as our most precious heritage lies hidden among the shadows and mystery of the Wellsford Forest. We are not talking about buildings but what local conservationalists call the the Big Trees or the Elders of the Forest. There are only nine remaining pre-European Ironbarks on public land in Bendigo, and these awe-inspiring trees are estimated to be more than 400 years old. The Big Trees are not easy to find but if you want to see them you can join the Wellsford Forest Conservation Alliance on a walk

on Sunday, May 18. The walk of about two kilometres each way will visit most of these magical trees. There will be talks from the historical and naturalist perspec-

need for better protection of the Wellsford State Forest. “The Wellsford Forest is 6500 hectares and stretches eastwards from the outskirts of Bendigo to Mount Sugarloaf near Axedale.

If we treat the forest with respect and stop logging, they also give us a window into the future tive, and a BYO picnic afterwards at Gunyah picnic area. “We also have another agenda,” Stuart Fraser, the convenor of Bendigo and District Environment Council, said. “And that is to highlight the

“In the early 2000s the forest was considered to be of sufficient biological importance to be included in the Greater Bendigo National Park, but due to political expediency it was classified as State Forest, thus allowing con-

tinued degradation through cutting for saw logs and firewood. “We hope to interest the general public in learning more about the Wellsford Forest and how important it is. “The forest and the Big Trees gives us a window into the past, and if we treat the forest with respect and stop logging, they also give us a window into the future.” You can register for the walk with Wellsford Forest Conservation Alliance by emailing wellsfordinfo@gmail.com or calling 5443 1326. Further details of time and place will be forwarded to you. – Dianne Dempsey

Marking 30 years THE Eaglehawk Community House celebrated 30 years of service and support to the community on Tuesday at the opening of their new premises. ECH co-ordinator Fiona Mummery said it’s an exciting time for the community of Eaglehawk. “We were very happy about this opportunity to celebrate two important milestones for the Eaglehawk Community House and to thank all those who have been associated with the house over the years,” she said. ECH was born during a conversation over tea between local resident Margaret Bannan and the late Maurice Neville. The two were concerned at how little there was for children to do in Eaglehawk, so they took action. Key people in the community were approached and supported the concept and at the time, the Department of Housing got involved and the House at 12 Truscott Avenue

became a home for 30 years. The Eaglehawk Community House grew out of Truscott Avenue a long time ago, but it was not until the YMCA Playhouse Child Care building became available that the dream of larger premises and more accessibility to the broader community was realised. The new premise is on the corner of Bright and Reserve streets, Eaglehawk. “The move is already proving to be positive with more than 200 individuals registering since we started in January this year and we are now averaging 500 ‘swings of the door’ per week,” Ms Mummery said. “Twenty-five of those registered are volunteers who have wonderful skills and a desire to contribute to their community. People can come to a homely, non-threatening, welcoming, friendly, safe environment and supportive family.”

THE Bendigo Community Toy Library’s annual Baby and Kids Market will be bursting with bargains when the doors open at the Strathdale Community Centre on Saturday. Market organiser Annemarie McClure said the demand for stalls has been overwhelming. “We have had so much interest in our market from the community – we’ve even got stallholders on a waiting list. Located at the Strathdale Community Centre from 9am to 1pm, the market is right next to the popular children’s playground on Crook Street. Keep the family satisfied with a sausage sizzle and a coffee van there on the day.

PICK UP YOUR RUNNING BIB MOTHER’S Day Classic running bibs with electronic timing and your walking bibs are now ready to be collected from The Athlete’s Foot store in the centre of the Hargreaves Mall. Bibs can be collected between now and 2pm on Saturday. Any bibs not collected by this time can be collected on the day at the event, however the team would prefer you to have them before the event to avoid delays.

CLOSED FOR THE CLASSIC ROAD users should note there is no entry into Cousins Street between Crook Street and Reservoir Road for the duration of the Mother’s Day Classic which runs from 8am until 11am this Sunday.

AMBULANCES TAKE TO THE AIR BENDIGO will have a new state-ofthe-art Ambulance Victoria helicopter from January 2016. Following a competitive tender process, Australian Helicopters has been awarded a 10-year contract to operate new Agusta Westland AW-139 twin engine helicopters for Ambulance Victoria across the state. The new fleet will replace AV’s present five helicopters and includes a dedicated back-up aircraft to maintain services when heavy aircraft maintenance is required. AV also operates four King Air B-200 fixed wing aircraft, which are used in emergencies and for the routine transfer of patients.

Number one buns

By SAM KANE

BENDIGO bakers are rolling up their sleeves to help raise $1.5 million for Breast Cancer Network Australia in this year’s Pink Bun Campaign. The annual fundraising campaign will see almost 600 bakeries donate 100 per cent of the sale of more than one million pink finger buns to BCNA. Chasing a record-breaking fundraising target in 2014, BCNA is encouraging Bakers Delight customers to buy a bun and help provide much needed support for Australian women and families living with breast cancer. Cancer survivor Judy Bickley said customers were supportive

of the campaign in Bendigo. “Its amazing how generous people can be. “People just go past and donate money without buying the buns. This year the campaign finishes just after Mother’s Day. BCNA chief executive officer Maxine Morand, herself a breast cancer survivor, said Mother’s Day can be a difficult time for families affected by breast cancer. “Mother’s Day takes on a special significance, she said, “My mother and I were both diagnosed. For some families it is a time to appreciate a loved one affected by breast cancer, while for others it is a time to

reflect on the good memories of those we have lost. The money raised by Bakers Delight customers will support BCNA’s information resources provided to Australians affected by breast cancer. Bakeries at Strath Village, Lansell Square, Lyttleton Terrace and Bendigo Marketplace hope to make this the most successful Pink Bun campaign ever, aiming to do their bit to better the $1.2 million raised in 2013. Already the campaign has raised $600,000 nation-wide. Customers are also encouraged to leave a personal message for women in their community on a Pink Lady paper silhouette for a gold-coin donation.

SIX-year-old cystic fibrosis sufferer Amelia McCrohan is a political pawn, in the hands of a committee able to give her a potentially life-saving drug. Father Tim McCrohan said he had lost all hope, after his daughter is practically ineligible for the drug Kalydeco. The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee has developed a criteria to regulate who is eligible for the drug under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. At $300,000 a year, the McCrohan family simply cannot afford the drug without assistance. “With the criteria patients have to follow, Amelia has a dog’s hope of getting the drug,” he said. Kalydeco targets the underlining causes of cystic fibrosis and will improve Amelia’s quality of life. Amelia’s lung function, at 98 per cent, makes her ineligible on a possible criteria as she is unable to see a 10 per cent increase on the drug but a glimmer of hope may allow her to access based on weight gain. Mr McCrohan is not optimistic. “Effectively someone has to suffer more than Amelia to access Kalydeco. We live with this every day, we can’t understand it,” he said. “My wife and I are understandably gutted by this. They are playing politics with children’s lives. Our only option is to leave Australia (to access the drug) but this is not a reality option. “We cannot pay $22,000 a month.” Mr McCrohan said the only way to get the drug is with a political push, fundraising would only help his daughter not others. “Even if we fundraise for Amelia,

important to resolve,” he said. “The government is committed to delivering the best possible access to new medicines, but we need to do it on the advice of the experts. “It must be established that drugs recommended to the PBS are safe and that they are cost effective.” Mr Dutton said PBAC wants evidence the drug is working but is urging Vertex to come to the party. “Other drug companies have agreed to this approach and this company should now explain why they won’t be fair,” he said. Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters is asking the government to reject PBAC’s “unreasonable conditions” and place Kalydeco unconditionally on the PBS. “We have the medicine to make Amelia as healthy as any other six year old and it is devastating for the family that she can’t receive it,” she said.

what about others who can’t fundraise or don’t have the support. It doesn’t help them,” he said. “We have lost hope in this whole process.” Cystic Fibrosis Australia chief executive officer Michelle Skinner said Vertex expressed frustration at the criteria. “If strictly applied, the criteria would not only exclude a large number of people, but that it would make it difficult for many others to remain on the therapy,” she said. “CFA made it very clear to Vertex that it will not let the cystic fibrosis community be a ‘political football’ used for the benefit of the company or the government.” The PBAC recommended listing Kalydeco on the PBS list last year but criteria is limiting people’s access. Health Minister Peter Dutton is being blamed for the creation of the PBAC criteria. “The whole thing is a big crock. Who puts the criteria must be the minister. Someone has to be responsible for PBAC and set the ground rules. I am not criticising PBAC but the process, Mr Dutton is just making life hard,” Mr McCrohan said. “The government is playing hard ball with lives.” Mr McCrohan wants the government to allow patients to complete a “sweat test” to test saline levels in the body and if there is no improvement, the patient would come off the drug. Mr Dutton said the government was listing 17 new drugs a month on the PBAC. ”While it is pleasing that the PBAC has made a positive recommendation about the clinical efficacy of Kalydeco, they have also made recommendations about pricing arrangements, which are

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, May 9, 2014

BENDIGO BEAT City bucks drug trend BENDIGO has fared well compared to other parts of the state in the latest drug statistics report. Turning Point’s Trends in Alcohol and Drugs Related Ambulance Attendances for 2012-13, released on Wednesday, paints a picture of rising drug and alcohol incidents across the state. However, the statistics show Bendigo finished well down the tables in a number of key areas. Bendigo’s number of alcoholrelated ambulance attendances increased to 219.8 per 100,000 people, up from 148 the year before. However, the 2013 results put Bendigo way down the list, at 23rd worst in regional Victoria. There were also 16 metropolitan councils with a higher alcohol callout rate than Bendigo. Most council areas recorded significant increases, but Bendigo’s increase was a lot less than other regional and metropolitan councils. Bendigo’s cannabis callout rate of 20.2 per 100,000 people was 25th on a list of 25 of regional councils, with 27 metropolitan councils recording a higher figure. Last year’s figure was 13.7. Also surprising was Bendigo’s ice, or crystal methamphetamine callout rate. Bendigo’s 23.1 per 100,000 ambulance callout rate in 2012-23 was the fourth in a 13-regionalcouncil table, with 16 metro council areas recording a higher callout rate then Bendigo.

As across the rest of the state, Bendigo’s ice callout rate for 201213 increased from last year, when it was 6.9. There was less than one ice callout per fortnight in Bendigo in 2012-13. La Trobe council jumped from 13.6 in 2011-12 to 40.6 in 2012-13. Geelong’s jumped from 8.3 to 22.9, and Shepparton from 8.1 to 22.5. La Trobe, Morabool (30.7) and Horsham (25.4) were the top three in 2012-13. Ambulances attended 24 icerelated callouts in Bendigo over the year. Greater Bendigo’s amphetamine ambulance callout rate of 28 per 100,000 people was the seventh worst in regional Victoria, with 16 metro councils recording higher callout rates. The city also fared well by comparison in the area of benzodiazepine ambulance callouts, with 53 per 100,000 people. That figure was 20th on the regional-council list, with a further 27 metro councils recording a worse rate. Bendigo’s heroin callout rate of 4.8 per 100,000 people was last on a five-council table, with 29 metropolitan councils recording a higher callout rate. The category Bendigo fared worse in was ecstasy-related callouts, topping regional councils with 6.7 callouts per 100,000, the ninth-worst in the state.

Dancing with death LAW enforcement officers have been busy policing a festival and fighting crime this week. Three dogs and 40 transit police officers sniffed out drugs before Groovin’ the Moo last Saturday. The operation targeted illicit drugs and reducing anti-social behaviour focused at the Bendigo Train Station. More than 25 people were detected for drugs but only 13 offenders were processed for drug offences. Bendigo Police Senior Sergeant Craig Gaffee said the drugs were mainly cannabis or methamphetamines. “We are disappointed we had any drug detections and that people are putting their lives at extreme risk,” he said. “They are dancing with death for the sake of a good time.” Only one male was arrested at the festival for drunkenness after being asked to leave and returning for a second time. Five people were arrested later in the Bendigo CBD but Snr Sgt Gaffee said that was normal for a Saturday night. “Overall we are happy and the organisers put on a good show,” he said. Sen Sgt Gaffee said police would continue to target events and illicit drug use.

appear at the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court later this year. Acting Sergeant Mark Bell said anyone who had items stolen from their motor vehicle should contact police to reclaim their items. “We are still getting hit with opportunistic thefts, property stolen from unlock cars and alike,” he said. “We encourage people not to leave valuable items, in view, in their cars.” Acting Sgt Bell said anyone who has items stolen from their vehicle should always contact police. “We can’t catch people without the public’s help,” he said. Acting Sgt Bell reminded locals to look before they leave their vehicle unattended.

DEVELOPERS will be asked to go back to the drawing board after council voted for a modified design on a 26-lot subdivision in Bendigo. Greater Bendigo councillors moved a motion to reject the proposed subdivision on Havlin Street, falling short of council’s belief in good design. Instead, councillors decided to compromise, asking for modified proposal plans. Cr Peter Cox said it was important to look at the bigger picture and the future development in Bendigo. “I no longer want to see Bendigo spread out. We need compact, denser living but at the same time acknowledge this application does not have the right design,” he said. “Let’s challenge the applicant to say they have the best design because this will set a precedent for how Bendigo will go in the future.” Cr Rod Campbell said the proposal had potential to be a great development but it missed the mark in its current form. “This ticks a lot of planning principles but falls short on many areas in delivery. Most unfortunately is it is alien to the area, it does not fit anywhere with its setting logically,” he said. “There are numerous, stark buildings of a range of sizes. They are just too sterile on effect. It’s an excellent location but there are many things that don’t work.” Builder Russell Parsons said he

Venepuncture NOT LIKE THIS: The plans failed to gain immediate approval. did not consider this a “knock-back” but a stage to get the design right. Cr Campbell admitted this type of medium density in-fill was consist with council’s future ambitions. “That type of development is laughing at everything we have done in that area,” he said. “This is the direction we want to go but not the standard. We should

ask the developer to reconsider the look and feel of the development.” Despite being an ideal location to the CBD, transport and parks, Cr Helen Leach also said it was an unacceptable development. But Cr James Williams said the development met council’s Residential Development Strategy and met almost all planning guidelines.

AFTER an overwhelming amount of community support last-year, the Golden Square Community Pool committee is celebrating its successes. Within the 100 days the pool was open throughout the past summer, patronage exceeded the expectations of management, with the committee calling it the best season out of its historic 96-year history. President Ken Hamilton said he was pleased with how the season turned out. “The community just got behind it, and kept coming,” he said. Mr Hamilton gained support from the Golden Square community when the Greater Bendigo council voted to close the pool in 2012. The pool, which is run completely by volunteers, recorded visitation of more than 12,000 people from their opening day in November last year.

When the pool was open and run by the council, 1800 people used the pool for the season. The committee is planning to be out in the community rallying up support throughout the winter, with barbecues and tin-rattles already planned. Mr Hamilton said these fundraising events are still an important part of keeping the pool afloat. “We need to have a reasonable amount of money in the bank to allow for breakdowns or urgent maintenance issues. We still have general upkeep which we need funds for,” he said. “We may also be putting in some more shade-sails, and seeing whether we can afford to paint the bottom of the pool.” YMCA holiday programs, school groups, birthday parties and sporting clubs used the revitalised facility last season. Public visitors to the pool have

commended volunteers on the new outlook of the swimming area, as the facilities have been improved from previous years. “The volunteers have been amazing. I can’t be more happy with how its all gone,” Mr Hamilton said. “We’ve had really great comments from the patrons on how the volunteers went about their duties.” The pool is expected to re-open for the 2014/15 season in November. “There are some new things in the pipeline, but generally we were pretty pleased with how the pool ran,” Mr Hamilton said. As a first for Bendigo, the pool also gave swimmers the option of buying a Golden Square Community Pool only season pass. To donate money, service, or time, the pool can be contacted on facebook, twitter, or email, at goldensquarepool@hotmail.com

Delivering the goods By CHRISTINE McGINN

HAPPY DAYS: Gordon Scott. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Food for thought A FRIENDLY-FACED Gordon Scott has been helping give food to people, in need, his whole retirement. Overseeing the shed, Mr Scott has been helping Bendigo Foodshare to receive and transport goods to hungry locals. “The volunteers we have here are just great,” he said. “I oversee the shed and make sure everything is in order, that things goes out, keep the place clean and neat,” the father of two daughters said. “There is a lot more stock coming in. It has become a bigger thing and there are a lot of people who want our product, more people need our food.” Primary producers, manufacturers and distributers donate their produce which may be production overruns, fresh fruit or vegies of varying

size not suitable for supermarket sale, close to their best before date or a corporate donation. Bendigo Foodshare receives food that would otherwise be used as stock feed or go to landfill. “The problem isn’t better but we have a better solution for it,” Mr Scott. Mr Scott helped another organisation feed the needy for about five years before starting at Bendigo Foodshare. “When I retired, I felt like a fish out of water and I started with Uniting Care then an opportunity came up, and I’ve been here since it opened,” he said. “I get the pleasure of coming in here each time, work with and meet nice people. I couldn’t ask for a better place to work.”

SIX transport companies have come forward to help Bendigo Foodshare collect and deliver food to people in need. Pickering Transport Group, J and A Light Freight, Hazeldene’s Chicken Farm, Power’s Country Express, ParcelPass Freight Services and Cool Frog Refrigeration are all coming on board to help pick up and deliver produce. Administration and donor manager Fay Barrett said the companies travelled across Central Victoria, to Melbourne and Sydney. “They have just done the most incredible thing for us. To see that commitment from the community is wonderful,” she said. “The response has been really fantastic.” Bendigo Foodshare put the call out last week for 10 transport companies to pick up and drop off food that would otherwise go to waste. “We would like more companies to help, so it stops the burden (on a few). Many hands make light work,” Ms Barrett said. About 14,000 meals are delivered to Central Victorians each month, totalling almost 1.3 million meals this financial year. Operations manager Ray Butler said companies across the region were needed to pick up bulk food and deliver it to Bendigo Foodshare. “We get food that would otherwise be forgotten; or otherwise from corporate organisations that donate four to five pallets of food,” he said. “It’s not just stuff going to the landfill. We have no income, it’s free food. We need assistance with companies that could transport food.”

Mr Butler said the support from transport companies gave them a more diverse range of stock to help those in need. “The need is continuing to grow,” he said. “This isn’t an ongoing thing for people, it’s people who have lost jobs and can’t manage to feed their families.” The organisation distributes food among 22 emergency relief centres, 30 meals programs and 49 schools. Ms Barrett said they were also

looking for corporate donors to help them meet their costs. “We need assistance with servicing and fuelling our old truck. It costs us about $500 a month to run. A generous donor would take a great deal of pressure off us,”she said. Mr Butler said the non-for-profit organisation was also developing a method to attract ongoing funds. Companies able to assist the organisation should email Bendigo Foodshare at admin@bendigofoodshare.org.au

Losing the focus Michael McKenzie (Bendigo Weekly, May 2) has raised concern over the Greater Bendigo council’s determination to increase rates by six per cent with no regard for the external economy and certainly no regard for constituents. however, this is only part of the revenue-driven council’s collection. Because of supplementary valuations, due to development; subdivisions, new building and renovations plus revaluations, the total rate revenue collected by the council will increase by not six per cent promoted but at least eight per cent. The independent review claimed that development was a burden to council because of the increased demand for services. i can only suggest that the poor burghers of Strathfieldsaye have been forgotten in this equation compared with the council expenditure in the “Golden Mile”. The road system is in decline and is being overwhelmed by increasing traffic. Where are the library service, indoor sports facility, swimming pool or even an effective walking/cycle path network to service the primary school. The projected population of Strathfieldsaye is two thirds that of echuca. The organisation has lost the focus on basic service provision and values revenue collection and mega projects as its primary purpose. Colin C Campbell, Strathfieldsaye.

Funding for women’s refuge aS the Napthine Government hands down a budget virtually devoid of appropriate funding for women and their children fleeing domestic violence this week, an ever-increasing number of women and children are being brutalised, traumatised, terrorised and murdered every day in Victoria. State politicians and Premiers routinely line up to denounce the rampant levels of violence against women and children, and, following the latest spate of domestic homicides, to repeat the usual platitudes in lieu of actually investing the serious and sustained money into service infrastructure, training and resourcing which is needed to begin to reduce the ever-present, ever-burgeoning scourge of domestic violence. Bendigo’s annie North Women’s Refuge chief Julie Oberin is right to ask: “how many more women and children have to die?” as Ms Oberin has also said “Years of abuse can really erode women’s selfconfidence”. Similarly, years of neglectful budget priorities can really erode women’s confidence in, and respect for governments of all stripes, who, when budget savings simply must be found, reflexively slash services and funding to the

most vulnerable and the most powerless. They choose to do what is easy, rather than what is right, and, shamefully, in electoral terms, it appears that the holy grail of a budget surplus is preferable to the protection of women and children and the prevention of family violence. Treasurer Michael O’Brien gloats: “No radio commentator... outside of Victoria... is saying how are you going to spend your surpluses, Treasurer?” i suggest you take a long hard look at the astonishingly appalling statistics relating to violence against women and children within domestic situations, Mr O’Brien. Then, if you have any sense of moral outrage and social justice at all you shouldn’t have any trouble finding ways to spend “your” surplus. Properly funding the annie North Women’s Refuge here in Bendigo, so that it can effectively provide life-saving and life-changing services, support and education to women fleeing crippling domestic violence could be a rare occasion when government puts its money where its mouth is, in terms of fairness and social equity. That, rather than a paltry and fleeting budget surplus, would be something truly worth bragging about. Michelle Goldsmith, Eaglehawk

Promises and more promises NO matter which side of politics you barrack for there’s always plenty of flack to aim at the sitting government, we all remember the “No carbon Tax” story which is now knocked over by the “levy” from abbott and hockey so just exactly what is the difference in a promise and a lie. Gillard told a lie, according to the pundits, knowing full well it was part of the deal with The Greens and independents with every intention of imposing the tax to appease them. Then there was the Mining Tax which failed, incurring a nightmare for labor, altogether it was part of the cause of the monumental deficit which left the lNP with their backs to the wall, it just won’t go away, Tony abbott and Joe hockey have to eat humble pie because they have made a promise which they cannot honour or is that a lie? We all agree to disagree about the motives of politicians in order to gain power and more so to retain it, most of the people i talk to do not trust politicians to keep their word before and after the elections both state, federal and local council. Be things as they are we will all be involved in the cost cutting and extra charges, who do we blame? The previous or current government, think about it. Bob Pringle, Strathfieldsaye

this bendigo life Building a better Victoria By GreG Bickley ,

liberal candidate for Bendigo east BeNdiGO is front and centre following the State Government’s budget handed down on Tuesday. a record infrastructure spend by the coalition led by Premier denis Napthine, means Bendigo is reaping the benefits of sound economic management and good government. The list of projects that are on the agenda for Bendigo is extensive. For the first time in 40 years epsom residents will have a passenger rail connection via a brand new $7.76 million railway station to deliver more services and faster travel times. The station will include 100 car parks and a bicycle compound. Over the past 12 months, i am pleased to have been the

catalyst for securing $86 million dollars for the complete rebuild of the Ravenswood interchange. The State Government’s component of the funding was confirmed on Tuesday. This project will not only improve the productive capacity of the region but it will save lives.

These things don’t just happen by accident and of course, the coalition is building a better, bigger $630 million new Bendigo hospital. The size of this project, and the impact it will have on our region is far greater than most of us realise. i believe Bendigo is already the most liveable regional city in the world. But the new Bendigo hospital, by its very existence, will attract people to our great region. and of course, we are well on the way to seeing the indoor

aquatic leisure and Wellbeing centre in Kangaroo Flat becoming a reality, after a tremendous $15 million commitment to the project by the State coalition Government. These things don’t just happen by accident. You cannot deliver massive, state changing infrastructure if you don’t have the fundamentals right. Treasurer Michael O’Brien has laid out an operating surplus of $1.3 billion for the next financial year, rising to $3 billion in 2016 and $3.3 billion by 2018. it is a reminder to us all that a good government, a competent government, can build a better Victoria.

editorial

Walk for a cause ONCE more, it’s time for the Mother’s Day Classic. The Bendigo Weekly has been there from day one of the Bendigo version with staffer Vicki Harrington leading the charge for the first local event. After five classics, Vicki handed over the reins to her daughter, Gaye, and the family tradition carries on. The Weekly continues to support the event, now in its sixth year, because it matters, and this newspaper is a champion of things which matter. And while we run a pink front page and promote the colourful day, we are in no doubt of the seriousness of the subject. Breast cancer is a killer, one in eight women in Australia will contract the disease in their lifetime. But thanks to money raised for research, the chance to return to a healthy life is greatly improved. That’s why the Mother’s Day Classic is so important and the cause would welcome your help. This Sunday about 2000 people are expected to attend. The serious runners will take on eight kilometres, but there are

four kilometre runs and a four kilometre walk. It costs $20 to be involved plus an extra $4 to time your run. It’s a small price to pay to help the research into the disease. Organisers have been keen to ensure the event is wrapped up by 11am, so you can still find the time to take mum for lunch, you can even bring mum along for a walk or run. It’s certainly a family event too, with plenty of activity for young and old. It would be easy to say that an 8am start is a bit much on a Sunday, maybe it is, but think of the one in eight women who need your help and it may just motivate you to hop out for the morning. Enough preaching, but suffice to say your attendance would be welcome. Our cover pictures breast cancer sufferer Kathryn Wright. Kathryn was first diagnosed with the disease 18 months ago when she was 28. Now at 30, she is still undergoing treatment. Her life has been put on hold while she battles cancer.

Her support team has rallied and Team Kath t-shirts will be in abundance on Sunday as about 80 runners and walkers take to Beischer Park showing their support for their friend. Businesses around Bendigo have been in training, with local real estate agents even competing with each other to raise the biggest team. It’s a positive approach which can only do good for the worthy cause. Mother’s Day Classic events take place around the country, but the fact we have one in Bendigo is due to the continued work of an army of volunteers who show up year after year, and the many hundreds of people who run, walk or attend in their city. We can take pride the classic has continued to grow and will no doubt do so in the years to come. We can only hope as it grows the need for such events diminishes, and the money raised goes to reduce the suffering, stress, heartache and loss caused by breast cancer. We can but try, and do our bit.

pk The games pollies play with Peter Kennedy

ONE of the glaring weaknesses in our political system is the attitude politicians adopt that says anything the other mob does must be wrong. Scoring political points at the expense of an opponent is not the main game. But it’s the game MPs on both sides of the political spectrum indulge in, all too often. Voters are sick of it. We can all see through it. We deserve better, and from all sides of politics. A few weeks ago, Bendigo Senior Secondary College principal Dale Pearce wrote a really insightful and thought provoking blog lamenting the blood sport that politics has become. The Bendigo Weekly reproduced that blog in full, on this page, and here: http:// www.bendigoweekly.com.au/ news/for-all-the-right-reasons We did so because we completely agree with Mr Pearce.

Politicians are elected to represent us, not just the party they belong to. Which brings me to this week’s state budget, described in some quarters as being a hoax, which it is not. It’s actually pretty good for Bendigo. $15 million for the proposed aquatic centre

Politicians are elected to represent us, not just the party they belong to at Kangaroo Flat is actually more than the Greater Bendigo council would have been hoping for. Q. What’s a good way to cook lentils? A. Lentils are great to eat, especially in this colder weather. They make a really good element to a lot of dishes. They are great with duck or roasted meats, they make fantastic salads and are a good way to thicken soups, stews and braises. I sautÊ fine diced vegetables in a little oil until soft. Rinse the lentils in cold water first, then add to the vegetables. I use the French Du Puy Lentils, these have great flavour and hold their shape really well during cooking. Just cover the lentils in hot stock of your choice, you can just use water if you like. Add a few sprigs of thyme and crushed cloves of garlic. Simmer for around 20 minutes until the lentils are just cooked. I season the lentils after they have been cooked and finish with a glug of good olive oil and muscatel vinegar.

Q. What is Mojama? A. Mojama is eaten mostly in Spain and parts of Italy. It basically means “dry and refers to Tuna. Tuna loins are salted and cured for a couple of days then left to dry in the Mediterranean sun and air for around two weeks. This was a form of preserving the tuna for trading. It’s typically served sliced very thin and drizzled with olive oil and lemon. Q. What’s the best way to peel chestnuts? A. Fresh chestnuts can be a bit tricky to deal with. You can score the end of the chestnut and dry roast in the oven. This makes a great snack and they are ready to eat from the oven. One great method is to score the chestnut skin then doing about five at a time, microwave the chestnuts for about 45 seconds. After this, and while they are still warm, they should easily pop out of the skin.

Groovin’ with Glenn HE talented artist, Jayden, who usually draws the cartoon with this piece is having a week off. Hence the photo of happy Steve and blooming Nellie at Groovin the Moo last weekend. I have officially decided I am retired from such events. Jayden kept calling me an old man, which didn’t help, but I really felt it. I was there for work, but didn’t really need to be, and it looked like a lot of fun. But, I was not getting the vibe. Nellie in the picture had a great time, and so she should... target market. It’s a sad awakening for someone who used to love such events. I went to an overnighter with 43,000 others at Knebworth in England in June 1980, and had a great time. I saw the Beach Boys and Mike Oldfield and Santana and loads more including Elkie Brooks who stormed off stage with the sulks. It was what I ultimately did at Groovin the Moo, leaving it for the youngsters. Thankfully I was not the oldest person there, but at 52 I imagine I was in the top .05

per cent. It was a disturbing sensation, feeling so out of it. Thought I’d have a drink to calm me down. Soon changed my idea on that, spirit mixers were $11, beer $9 and soft drinks a cosy $5. This included a $1 can fee, which was supposedly refundable, but hey guys you’ve already taken $99 at the gate. Grumpy, sober and what next can I whinge about? Cold, that will do. Would be a fantastic spring or autumn event, but windy May? There were quite a few young things in next-to-no clothing who would have suffered. I heard quite a few were hauled away in a sad state, but what can you expect when more than 16,000 gather at the showgrounds in cold weather with a bar? There was one light moment, I was in line for my wristband ticket and I had to show ID to get to the bar area. I suggested perhaps I was older than 18, but no I still had to show ID. On the drive home I was saddened by the thought of being too old for GTM, am I destined for a life of no more

concerts and listening to vinyl records at home? What else am I going to be too old to feel comfortable with? Why haven’t I realised this before? Is Jayden just voicing what everyone else is thinking when I go to these events? The questions are endless.

To make myself feel better I have lined up to go to a concert next month with Old Nick from the office. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is playing at The Capital, that’s what you call music, and I will be one of the youngsters there. Twitter@stevekendall1

Dear Sharon, Not at all, go for it. While I am morally opposed to Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day and dismiss them as commercial rip offs, I do make an exception for Mother’s Day, because we mothers are special and different. Although I must say last year I was very disappointed in my children. I woke up and put on an embroided bed jacket and waited for breakfast in bed. I waited and waited. I nearly wet the bed because I didn’t want to miss out on the sight of my darlings enthusiastically bursting through the door with a tray bearing delicious food and a single rose. It didn’t happen. By 11am my bladder couldn’t last any longer. I got up, went to the loo and started stalking through the house. They were both asleep, curled up in foetal positions embracing their hang overs. I futilely looked around for gifts, wrapped up in bows. Nothing. I started a loud, Joycean monologue: after all I have done for you, you ungrateful little bastards, all those

cut lunches, the homework I did, the lies I told your teachers, self, self, self, that’s all you think about, just for one day I expect a little acknowledgement, just one lousy day and you can’t get out of bed and make an effort, you’ll be sorry though, especially when I’m dead, not that I’m ever going to die, that’ll teach you, and I’m never stepping into a supermarket ever again, etc etc. By now I had worked up quite a head of steam. I rushed into their bedrooms, pulled off their doonas and screamed like a banshee. It did stop their hearts beating for a while. I then grabbed a bottle of wine, got back into bed, took off my embroidered bed jacket, found a book and ordered a pizza which I instructed be delivered through my bedroom window so they wouldn’t take any off me, the little bastards. Living with the problem

Spoilt for choice

The Man Who Couldn’t Stop: OCD and the true story of a life lost in thought By David Adam Picador, $32.99 ”

T

his is not intended as a self-help book,” states David Adam, regarding his exploration of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, The Man Who Couldn’t Stop. Adam has been coping with OCD for 20 years and so, familiar with the prejudice, misunderstanding and fear that sufferers face, he wanted to “prise open the eyes of others” and explain the realities of the disorder, beyond the obsessive handwashing and counting behaviours so often depicted in fiction. OCD manifests in various ways. Bira, an Ethiopian girl, ate an entire wall of her house in a desperate attempt to stop thinking about it. Hans Christian Anderson was so terrified of being buried alive he put a sign beside his bed assuring any unexpected visitors he wasn’t dead. Adam’s own OCD manifests as a crippling fear of contracting HIV. “I see HIV everywhere. It lurks on toothbrushes and towels, taps and telephones.” A skinned knee or pricked finger will send him into a panic, despite knowing rationally how ridiculous he’s being. Equally disturbing are the experimental therapies. In the mid 20th century patients had metal skewers “hammered up through the

tops of the eye sockets… in a clumsy attempt to sever bits of the frontal cortex.” Other patients endured electric shock therapy, drugs that turn you into a “happy zombie” and a therapist once suggested Adam smear his daughter in his own blood as a way of confronting fears about infecting her. It’s an ambitious book, covering history, political, scientific and social aspects of OCD; related conditions, as well as memoir. It could have been chaotic, but Adam’s experience as a writer and editor for Nature, the world’s leading scientific journal, shows in the way he uses his own story to weave everything into a seamless whole. He makes complex scientific concepts accessible and his dry humour, storytelling prowess and candour about his own struggle make this a compelling, entertaining and enlightening read. - Vanessa Hughes

Young mums, old mums, in-between mums, here’s a list of authors they might enjoy cuddling up with on Mother’s Day. IT all depends on taste of course, and if your mumsy is into highbrow or low literature, but the following list should provide a good starting point. Rosamunde Pilcher writes delicious romantic family sagas where gardens feature quite largely and women wander around in them, whistfully. I particualrly enjoyed her first book, The Shell Seekers, where the hero starts as a bright young thing, goes through her middle ages and finally lies down and dies in the herbacous border. Splendid stuff. Joanna Trollope is often referred to as the author of Aga Sagas because, well,

much of the drama takes place around the Aga stove in the kitchen. My two favourites are The Choir which romanticses life in a cathedral town (just like us) and A Spanish Lover, fraught with passion and unrequited love. Of course Maeve Binchy is a great mum writer. Many of her novels are set in Ireland – the emerarld hills and the cliffs and stormy seas add a layer of contentment. For the mums who relish a jolly good murder try Ruth Rendell or alternativrly you could try her psychological thrillers written under the pseudonym of Barbara Vine. Jeannette Winterson’s semi-autobiographical books

are great but one of the best memoirs I have read is Dorothy Hewett’s WildCard. As well as being clever Dorothy is madly adventurous, headstrong and brave, you won’t be able to put this one down. And I’ll always remember

Hewett telling me about her writing habits. She used to be a chain smoker and every couple of hours or so her routine would be to stop and empty the typewriter up side down and shake out the ashes.

Fire and charity T

HERE were many in the Caucasian community of Bendigo in the 19th and indeed into the 20th century who, like a great number of their Chinese counterparts, lived in dire poverty. The sum of people living in huts and shacks was more significant than we would like to imagine. Even in my own youth I can remember exploring the Bendigo area and finding the most primitive places that happened to be some lonely soul’s abode. Many of these makeshift constructions, cobbled together with all kinds of scrap materials, would have made many of the backyard chook pens that were so prevalent at the time look like real palaces by comparison. The largest proportion of these primitive shelters were, as I recall, occupied by men. In my historical research, particularly pertaining to the 19th century there were a good number of widows with families living in such humpies, for want of a better description. We have to remember that there were no social services as such, there was however the place of last resort – the Benevolent Asylum, which had charity at its heart but was financially very constrained. Charity was what was

given to the Chinese when there was a fire at their Ironbark Camp on September 23, 1887. Many of the domiciles were burnt out as a result of the conflagration, the police were there to offer shelter to the now homeless residents. The Chinese gratefully declined the police offer, they would try and attempt to find room with one of their countrymen while some were able to take up temporary residence in the Joss House. The Benevolent Asylum lent the fire victims blankets for which they were also very thankful. The mayor of the day, councillor JJ Connelly, opened a public appeal to assist those who had lost almost everything to the devouring element. There were community members who donated goods demonstrating that the Chinese were not ostracised by large numbers of Bendigonians. As the Chinese were their own bankers, many lost bank notes and bank drafts which of course had just turned into ash. Remarkably the day following the fire there were Caucasian souvenir hunters who thought they could find treasure among the ashes and scraps of iron that

remained after the flames had done their work. There were also those who went deliberately to taunt and stir up trouble with antisocial behaviour, these mostly youths were condemned for their actions. Rumours abounded about buried gold and money but as it was pointed out in the press, “those who ought to know, state that this hidden wealth is pure myth.” Fires were far more frequent in the domestic situation than they are today, given that cooking was by fire, lighting was by candles or kerosene lamps and the poorer you were the smaller the living quarters

making the threat of fire even greater. Chinese camps that also suffered from fire were at Beechworth in 1904 and Deniliquin the year before. Surprisingly the following day of the Bendigo fire, it was thought that one person had perished but On Yan, the supposed victim, was found the next day in a hut away from the camp, he was badly burnt and consequently taken to the hospital. In total there were 41 residences (although some reports state 60) burnt to the ground with the estimated total damage amounting to £5000, this being for the houses as well as the contents and in some

cases stock. A good number of the destroyed houses had been owned by well-to-do Chinese, who rented these out to their tenants. The most likely cause of the fire was attributed to the children of Lin Kee, as they had been playing with matches. Unfortunately Lin Kee had a disability, and his wife made sure she had the children when making her escape, had it not been for a neighbour rescuing him he would have certainly perished. A number of society ladies were at the forefront of spearheading relief for those distressed members of the community.

ENDIGO is bursting with housing activity, and with many new streets, roads and estates springing up, Heritage Matters thought it might be interesting to look at some of Bendigo’s long established locales, and answer the simple question “Where did that name come from?” First up is Tannery Lane, in Mandurang. There was a tannery operating on Sheepwash Creek, which runs parallel to the lane, since the 1850s. In the 1860s the Edinburgh tannery, as it was called, was producing 5000 hides a year, and exporting all over the world. Kilns and furnaces worked year round drying the hundreds of tons of bark needed to dye the leather. A tannery produces a lot of pollution, and with Sheepwash Creek being vital for agriculture, conflict broke out in the 1890s. Complaints about “offensive matter” in the creek, and the general stench caused a stir. In 1894 the tannery, then owned by JH Abbott, was destroyed by fire, and although re-opened, the changing district, and changes in legislation led to its closure in the early years of last century. The last link we have to the tannery is 265 Lyttleton Terrace, the “Edinburgh Tannery” building, the original home of Abbott Supply. Do you have a street or place name you are curious about? HIS is Pug – he’s 10 (56 in doggy years). To his right is Turbo aged 16 (80 in doggy years) And next to him is Roger 11 (61 in doggy years). The boys are getting old and starting to feel the odd ache and pain. The best part of the day for them now is when they put on their slippers of a night and curl up for a sleep. As owners you can help them through the senior years and if your best friend is seven years or older then it’s time for their seniors wellness exam. As our pets grow older we expect to see some changes, but what is normal aging? And how do we best care for them at this life-stage? There is great variation in our dogs’ and cats’ life expectancy but as a general rule any pet seven years or older is considered middle

aged or old aged. Normal changes include gradual hearing loss, greying fur, particularly around the muzzle, loss of muscle tone and a blue appearance to the eyes. However there are many diseases that can also cause these or similar changes. Bendigo Animal Hospital recommends a Seniors Examination every 12 months and in some cases every six months to monitor change. These examinations are a great opportunity for you to receive tailored information on how to accommodate your pet’s changing dietary, exercise and environmental needs. Prevention of disease or early detection is the best path to keeping happy, healthy furred members of the family. Please go to www.bendigohospital.com.au

Super Series proves popular FRESHWATER FISHING

HE Murray River above Torrumbarry proved a successful venue for several of the 62 anglers for the fourth round of the Central Victorian Lure Casters Super Series last month. Ideal weather and good water clarity had five legal cod caught and three golden perch – a remarkable effort considering the time limit. Shane O’Hara retuned home some $430 richer after trolling up the largest fish of the round with a 85cm Murray cod on a purple Oar-Gee.

However David Adams took out the major points placing with two legal cod and a golden perch, followed by Shane O’ Hara and Paul Thomas in second place and third place respectively. The year’s final round will be held tomorrow at lake Mulwala together with the Bendigo Marine end of season Fish Off, where the top five anglers of the previous rounds are in for contention for an additional prize courtesy of Bendigo Marine World. Registrations at the Shoreline Caravan Park Mulwala, Saturday, May 10 between 8am and 8.30am. Last month the Mulwala Classic proved beneficial for some of Bendigo’s keener anglers, with Roger Miles landing the largest cod for the invitational tournament with a 92cm example. Roger’s fishing partner Derek Blow didn’t miss out either with the pair winning the popular dashfor-cash during the final session. Meanwhile closer to home Heathcote angler Peter Conforti

SURPRISED: Peter Conforti and his Eppalock cod. ` recently trolled up a solid 75cm Murray cod in the shallows from the Derrinal Pool area of Eppalock. Shore based anglers aren’t missing out either according to Guy Nicholas from Hartley’s Hunting & Tackle World in Bendigo with some anglers reporting good captures of golden perch at Cairn Curran on small yabbies. Recent rain has discoloured the Loddon and Campasie rivers making lure fishing less effective, making it an ideal time to target these destinations on bait according to Guy. Kennington and Crusoe reservoirs are still producing trout, courtesy of the DEPI regular holiday stockings and can be great outing for the whole family with a

few hours to spare. While most anglers tend to fish the bottom with bait don’t overlook a suspended worm 45cm below a float which can prove tempting at times. May 16 and 17 will have members of the Bendigo Legion Angling Club joining the Balranald Angling Club on the Murrumbidgee River. This may prove an ideal opportunity to find out more about angling opportunities the region offers to both bait and lure anglers. So anglers would be well advised to come prepared for all scenarios. Members can phone Maurie Knight on 0418 396 318 for more details.

HERE is little doubt that local fly fishers have been struggling to catch a trout at Barkers Creek, Cairn Curran, Upper Coliban, Lauriston and Malmsbury reservoirs. All reservoirs have been at good levels and well stocked by the Fisheries Department. Unfortunately these levels do fluctuate over summer. When low, the water warms and this can have the effect of pushing the trout to deeper less accessible water, for fly fishers. With winter seemingly on its way we can expect the fishing in these reservoirs to improve. I have already heard of good numbers of small baitfish (smelt) in these reservoirs and also at Tullaroop Reservoir. Some exciting fly-fishing can be expected if the larger trout in these reservoirs commence feeding on the smelt. Toolondo Reservoir was the venue for a recent round of the Victorian Fly Fishing competition. Toolondo was

chosen because the original venue, Lake Fyans, was not fishing well. The change in venue proved worthwhile with 110 fish measured for the weekend, with 46 fish more than 50cm in length with three of those exceeding 60cm. Closer to home I recently spoke to Bob Evans, who told me that Barkers Creek Reservoir was very quiet with no trout rising in the early mornings or evenings. The only fish Bob has seen surface feeding have been a long way out near the centre of the reservoir. Like many others Bob is hopeful that good hatches of insects at the reservoir will see the return of surface feeding fish. We hope that the fish stocked last year in the Drought Recovery stockings have survived and give local fly fishers some of the excellent fishing we have had in the past at the reservoir. For anyone interested in reading more about the Coliban Lakes, there is an article by Philip Weigall in the latest Flyfisher/Freshwater Fishing magazine.

Basketball on a winner By JOEL PETERSON

aN outstanding year for basketball in Bendigo was recognised recently, with the Bendigo Basketball association collecting several major awards at the Basketball Victoria awards night. The association won the award for Basketball Victoria Country’s Best large association, while the BBa Referees association was recognised with the Best Referee Development Program award. BBa secretary and Bendigo Stadium sport manager Craig green said 2013 had been wonderful for the association, and the awards reflected its current position. “It has been a brilliant 2013 for the BBa. The number of teams in our domestic competition has increased from 350 to 410 teams and we now have 3040 registered players which is an increase of about 400 players over the last 18 months,” he said. “Many sports are finding retention difficult but we are growing to the extent our facility needs to expand. “It’s a good problem to have.” green said many factors had contributed to the association’s success, including employing Jona-

than goodman as an associationwide director of coaching, and the success of elite programs such as the Bendigo Spirit and Bendigo Braves and lady Braves. “we have appointed a full-time director of coaching in Jonathan

but also a well-run grass roots program is essential to the success of our sport in the region.” along with the awards taken out by the association, several association members also collected individual service awards. The biggest of those went to longtime Braves junior coach ken Day, who was rewarded with the Basketball Victoria and Victoria Country volunteer of the

year awards. “ken is like many others who have been recognised for service awards this year, and has played an important part in assisting many players with pathway development in their basketball careers,” green said. “he will also receive a 50 year Diamond Service award from Basketball Victoria for his service to basketball, and is still involved

Eaglehawk pinks up for a cause EaglEhawk Football Netball Club will turn pink this Saturday in support of Breast Cancer Network australia, when it takes on gisborne at Canterbury Park in round six of the Bendigo Football Netball league. The Two Blues will don pink attire, including socks for footballers and netballers, and are encouraging spectators to wear pink in support of the cause. Eaglehawk’s Pink Sports Day coordinator Pam Nicolson said the club is encouraging its supporters to get involved for a good cause. “Pink Sports Day is a great opportunity for the whole community to head down to our club and support not just the teams competing on the day, but also to support locals affected by breast cancer,” she said. “we hope that everyone will wear some pink, get involved and show their true colour - pink.” Volunteers will be rattling collection tins on the day with funds to go to BCNa to support research and raising awareness of the disease. The club will also have a “pink merchandise” raffle, afternoon tea in conjunction with the past players association at

Cr lyons said the 2015 tournament will be yet another sporting coup for Bendigo. “The council is working hard to attract sporting and other major events to our region,” he said. “we have got terrific facilities and infrastructure and we are definitely getting the runs on the board and forming excellent working relationships with major australian sporting organisations

with the Braves’ under 16 boys team.” Peter allan, Don Coulson, karla Coulson and ashley Donaldson will also receive diamond awards for 50 years of service. Bendigo Spirit coach Bernie harrower, Spirit assistant coach andrea walsh and harrower’s longtime right hand man graham Taylor are among those receiving awards for 25 years of service.

SOLIDARITY: Eaglehawk tries out for Saturday’s games. the half time break of the senior football. The Borough’s footballers will face a tough task against the undefeated Dogs in gisborne legend Ollie Messaoudi’s 200th senior game, while Eaglehawk’s a-grade netballers will take on last year’s reigning premiers. Under senior coach luke Monaghan, Eaglehawk’s young side has won three of its first five games, and is coming off a 110-point demolition job of Castlemaine last weekend. South Bendigo will also take on kan-

garoo Flat on Saturday, with the Bloods to be led by interim coaches Neale Torpey and Peter Tyack after the resignation of Jeff Brennan this week. Bloods president Rick Townsend informed the playing group on Monday of Brennan’s decision to step down due to business commitments. kyneton travels to Flight Centre Park to take on Strathfieldsaye, golden Square hosts Maryborough and Castlemaine takes on top-of-the-table Sandhurst in other round six games.

such as Cricket australia which we hope will bring even more opportunities in the future. “This is expected to have a significant economic impact on our local economy and is also a fantastic opportunity for our own residents to watch the best country cricketers from around our nation right here in their own backyard. “we are looking forward to this wonderful opportunity to showcase Bendigo to australia’s best country cricketers.”

Sport and Recreation Minister Damian Drum congratulated Bendigo on being awarded host of the championships. “well done to the City of greater Bendigo on securing the australian Country Cricket Championships for 2015 . Not only will it build excitement around cricket in the region, players and their families coming to the city from across australia will be a significant boon for the Bendigo economy,” he said.

FC Bendigo has ticked three major boxes already in its first season of National Premier leagues Victoria competition. The club has played its first game, hosted its first game, scored its first points and at the weekend recorded its first win with a 3-2 triumph over North geelong. There is still one very important box to tick though, according to coach Steve Martin. “we really want to get that first win at home,” he said. “That’s the next goal for us, getting a win in front of our home crowd and being able to string some results in a row together. “we have had great crowd support in our first two home games, and the crowd has acted like a bit of a 12th man for us and we really want to keep building on that.” Bendigo jumped out to a 3-0 lead against the warriors, with george Slefendorfas slotting the ball past North geelong keeper Frano Saric. Matt Breeze then added Bendigo’s second through a blistering strike from 30 yards out, before he netted a second after half time to give the visitors a three goal lead. North geelong pulled two goals back, but Martin was happy with how his side held onto run out one-goal victors.

“we made some changes this week and probably put the boys on notice, and I could not have been happier with their attitude and endeavour on Saturday,” Martin said. “It was the closest we have come to a full 90-minute performance, and if it weren’t for a few late nervous moments it would have been even better. “we are under no illusions of the fact that although we have had a win, we really haven’t achieved anything and still have plenty to improve on.” Bendigo takes on Dandenong City on Saturday night at Tom Flood Sports Centre, looking for its second consecutive win, while Dandenong is coming off a 3-1 defeat at the hands of kingston City. “I know we have the ability, but getting a win against Dandenong will mean applying ourselves, making sure we do not have those lapses in concentration that have been costly and really coming to play,” Martin said. “If we do that, hopefully we will be playing some good football and be able to get that first win in front of our home fans.” The senior clash kicks off at 7pm, with the under-20 game preceding it from 5pm.

City is a champ

BENDIGO will host the Australian Country Cricket Championships next year. Cricket Australia officials and Greater Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons made the announcement at the QEO yesterday. Bendigo beat a number of other regional Australian cities for the right to host the event. The six-team competition featuring Western Australia, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and the ICC East Asia Pacific (Fiji, Vanuatu, and PNG), will be played from January 5 to 12, 2015. The annual tournament was first held in 1984-85 and next year’s championships will be the second time Bendigo has hosted the event. Teams will play twoday, one-day and Twenty20 matches across the week-long championships with Western Australia looking to defend

its title won in Canberra earlier this year. CA Game and Market Development executive general manager Andrew Ingleton said the championships provide an important opportunity for

Country cricket continues to be a tremendous nursery regional cricketers. “The Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships is central in acknowledging and celebrating the significance of country cricket,” he said. “Country cricket continues to be a tremendous nursery for talented young players.

“Regional Australia plays a critical role in Australia’s success on the world stage. “Almost half of our international men’s players first learnt the game in these areas, including Mitchell Johnson, George Bailey, Brad Haddin, Peter Siddle, Aaron Finch, Phil Hughes and Nathan Lyon. “A number of international players including Michael Bevan, Andy Bichel and Shaun Tait have also participated in these country championships and gone on to successful international careers. “In making today’s announcement, we acknowledge in particular the support provided by the Commonwealth Bank, as well as the enthusiasm of the City of Greater Bendigo in securing hosting rights to next January’s championships.”
