THE fight to stop toxic water bubbling to the surface across Bendigo is putting financial pressure on the Bendigo Trust. When Unity Mining stopped operations at its Kangaroo Flat mine in 2012, toxic groundwater it

Cash pressure over waste mine water

previously pumped out began rising in the city’s abandoned mine shafts. With the Central Deborah Mine the deepest accessible point of the water, the Trust, which operates the mine, as well as the city’s Talking Trams, the Joss House and the Dis-

covery Centre, was forced to act. A State Government grant of $300,000 enabled the Trust to buy the pumps, but it costs them more than $100,000 a year to run them. The past 12 months have seen a doubling of the amount of water pumped, doubling the costs. If

the water is not pumped, and the Trust decides to walk away from the underground section of the mine, the water will start bubbling up all around Bendigo. The water has high levels of arsenic and salt in it, as well as sulphur and metals such as manganese.

It cannot be used for drinking, recreation or agriculture and is not allowed to mix with surface water. At the moment the water is pumped into the Garden Gully Mine shafts and into Unity Mining’s Woodvale settling ponds.

ANYONE who ever wondered just how buoyant the local real estate market scene really is should look no further than the draft Greater Bendigo council budget papers for 2014-15. Embedded within an overload of facts and figures is a single page of valuations data for every rateable property in the municipality that shows our city is home to more than $18.18 billion worth of property, up by more than 12 per cent over the past two years. Average property values have risen by more than 20 per cent in the past four years, with some suburbs such as Eaglehawk, central Bendigo and Kangaroo Flat recording rises in excess of 24 per cent across the past four years. The council’s valuation data shows Maiden Gully has the highest average residential property value in 2014 ($427,118), ahead of Strathfieldsaye ($402,890), while Elmore is the most affordable at an average valuation of $180,384. GREATER Bendigo councillors will vote next week on a recommendation to approve a planned $3 million mosque in the city. The Bendigo Weekly can reveal council planning staff have recommended the mosque be built, despite about 200 objections to it. Most of those objections, however, are not on planning grounds. The Weekly revealed last month council was likely to approve the mosque, if its planners recommended it. Council will meet to vote on the plans on Wednesday. A Whipstick Ward meeting planned for Monday night is expected to attract a large antimosque crowd. Councillors were publicly tight-lipped about which way they would vote. Cr Rod Fyffe said there was still information about the planning application coming in. “I will take all of that on board and make up my mind closer to the meeting. There is some interesting information floating around and I have certainly made a number of inquires about mosque issues in other municipalities,” he said.

Cr Fyffe said as councillors they would make a responsible decision. Cr Rod Campbell said he never made up his mind before hearing the debate. “I always acquaint myself with the relevant information and hear the debate,” he said. Cr Elise Chapman said she would give her verdict on the night. “We have to go in with open minds and we are not allowed to say how we will vote,” she said.

ing the information,” he said. “There will probably be more information coming in before then and I will take all of that into consideration. I won’t know (how to vote) until the night of the meeting.” Cr Helen Leach also said she was unable to comment on the matter and all would be revealed on the night. Another councillor, James Williams said he was still reading through the objections and had

I have certainly made a number of inquires about mosque issues in other municipalities Cr Lisa Ruffell said she couldn’t yet make a decision on the matter until she had heard and read all the information. “I am still going through the 202 objections and the many emails coming in. It’s a week away and I need to read everything and I won’t be able to make my own decision on it until I am in the chamber,” she said. Cr Peter Cox echoed that councillors were not allowed to comment on the matter until the night. “Otherwise we will be prejudg-

met with several locals. “I really can’t say until the night but I have been reading through the objections and been doing my due diligence, going out to objectors in the area and have given a 10 point response,” he said. “I am just trying to address their issues on a planning perspective.” Cr Mark Weragoda said he would consider the application purely on planning. “I’ll be voting on the application on planning matters. As soon

as all the information comes... and there is more information from the officer, I will divorce myself from the matter and assess and work on it on planning,” he said. “I don’t care if it is a church or a mosque or whatever it happens to be. I will vote on it as a planning application.” Cr Weragoda said he had visited the site and heard from both sides of the debate regarding the development of a local mosque. Mayor Barry Lyons said he had not made a decision on the matter yet but wanted to make sure it fit the planning regulations. “I don’t know yet, I’ll wait and see what all the questions and answers are. We will deliberate it all tonight (Wednesday) and have the opportunity to ask questions. I will start forming an opinion after that,” he said. “I want to make sure planning regulations are adhered to. If it doesn’t fit into the planning scheme ... then we will pass that when it gets to that. “There has been a lot of pressure from both sides, 37 submissions for the mosque and about 200 against.” Council’s meeting agenda will be released on Monday morning.

Bella goes to great lengths A LONG Gully youngster is making a practical input for cancer care. Eight-year-old Bella Lightburn is cutting off her waist-length hair for Pantene’s beautiful lengths campaign. Her hair will be made into a wig for a cancer sufferer. Bella also will be raising money for Camp Quality during June to help families during their battle with cancer. “Bella wanted to have her hair cut,” mum Jenna said. “She’s the kind of girl who likes to help people, and I showed her the website about donating and she was hooked.

“She was excited to be able to help.” Bella has been growing the hair for four years now, and it fits all of the requirements for the program. “They have a decent amount to cut off,” Jenna said. “Apparently it is made into a ponytail and then cut off. “We have the hairdresser lined up, and it will be cut at the end of the month.” We didn’t get to find out whether Bella will miss her locks, but Jenna knew the answer. “I am glad she’s having it cut off,” she said. “I am the one who has to brush it every day.” – Steve Kendall

Doctor slams $7 pay plan A LOCAL Eaglehawk doctor has hit out against the Federal Government’s proposed $7 doctor co-payment for patients. General practitioner Tali Barrett said the proposed Medicare budget model would deter patients going to the doctor. “We have a prominence of young and elderly in rural and regional communities so we will bear the brunt it,” she said. “It matters for people who are on low incomes, children and families.” Dr Barrett said the biggest concern was patients would not be able to “afford proper and usual care”. Dr Barrett said it was likely people would present unnecessarily to hospital emergency departments who were unable to afford the co-payment. “People will present late and there will be health care negatives because of charging. I think people will defer seeing the doctor,” she said. “We already see people who can’t get their script until whenever. You add in the charges and then it becomes inaccessible.” Rural Doctors Association of Australia president Ian Kamerman said the policy was flawed. “The Federal Government’s proposed Medicare co-payment model is going to hit rural patients hard and will cause significant problems to country medical practices and their communities,” Dr Kamerman said. “Under the proposed co-payment requirement, rural doctors will face a tough choice – force more of their struggling patients to make the co-payment, or treat more of their patients free of charge and, in the process, take an even greater pay cut and put more pressure on their practice’s viability.” Dr Barrett said doctors who refuse to charge the co-payment will also lose their bulk-billing incentive, at a loss of about $13. “There is something fundamentally wrong with being paid to charge people. It just seems, on some levels, wrong,” she said. Dr Kamerman urges the government to reconsider the proposal due to the “significant and negative impacts” on rural communities and practices. Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said the changes required legislative approval in the Senate before being rolled out. “The GP tax will deter those most in need of medical help from going to the doctors. It will also put unbelievable pressure on our GPs and the health services they provide,” she said. Dr Barrett does not believe the policy will be passed in the Senate, “for good reason”. “The policy needs comprehensive review. I don’t think it’s good policy. “General Practice is the cheapest end of healthcare and we are good at preventing at hospital admissions,” she said.

Care under one roof By CHRISTINE McGINN

DRUG and alcohol intake and assessment service delivery in Loddon Mallee is being overhauled. Australian Community Support Organisation will take charge as the sole provider of the service. ACSO chief executive officer Karenza Louis-Smith said ACSO is leading the way to address alcohol and drug and mental health issues. “It is not that people are behind us, far from it... but we have had the foresight to see what the front door has been like for people in the criminal justice space so we can divert them,” she said. Ms Louis-Smith said they had developed their own “secret herbs and spices” especially, relating to forensic drug and alcohol treatment. “We can get people into treatment within two to five days. We assess them, help them understand what is happening and connect

them into treatment. It helps that person address their drug and alcohol problems and diverts them from offending,” she said. “What makes ACSO good at it, is we have the systems that tell us we what is available now.” Ms Louis-Smith said service

a 10 to 15 per cent increase in clients able to access services with the current government funds. But, Bendigo Community Health Services chief executive officer Kim Sykes said the existing agencies came together to create a “sustainable” service delivery model. “They have a wealth of local knowledge and expertise and often draw considerable community goodwill. Splitting the funding

across providers, especially smaller agencies, threatens their capacity,” she said on behalf of the consortium of eight health providers. Ms Sykes said it was important to foster the service growth in the region and agreed reforms were needed. “Our preference would have been to build upon the foundation that is already established in the region,” she said. “Because it is better for our clients to try and help the other agencies develop better capacity with our client group, we will work with them to do that.” Minister for Mental Health Mary Wooldridge said the State Government reforms were crucial to patient’s treatment. “ACSO’s important role in Bendigo will provide a simplified, single point of entry into treatment support and an assessment of what support will work best for individuals needing help,” she said.

TWO Bendigo road black spots are set to be improved with Federal Government funding. The approved projects are at the Allingham and Ham streets in Kangaroo Flat where a new roundabout will be installed at a cost of $471,000. There will also be a new roundabout at Plumridge and Raglan streets in White Hills at a cost of $252,000. The projects were recommended by a panel of independent road safety experts and will be delivered during the course of the coming financial year. Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs and Senator Michael

Neilborough man on murder charge A 52-year-old Neilborough man will face the Supreme Court in October over the alleged murder of a 36-yearold man this week. Maxwell John Pain was charged with murder after the death of the Raywood man on Wednesday night. Police have recovered a firearm believed to be involved in the incident. Bendigo Police were called to a property on Bridgewater-Raywood Road just after 7pm following an alleged altercation.

Police also cordoned-off another home, on Jackson Lane, Neilborough. Police believed the two residences were linked to the incident. The Homicide Squad charged him with one count of murder after being arrested at 9pm. Mr Pain faced an out-of-sessions court hearing on Wednesday night. Mr Pain also appeared in the Bendigo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Ronaldson announced the funding to fix the two dangerous black spots. Senator Ronaldson said this investment in Black Spot projects will deliver safer roads for Bendigo through targeted upgrades proven to deliver results. “Black Spot projects target dangerous roads to save lives and reduce road trauma, ensuring our local roads are safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” Senator Ronaldson said. “Anyone can suggest an intersection or stretch of road they believe should be considered for a safety upgrade, and we strongly encourage all councils and individuals to submit their nominations.” Further information and nomination forms can be downloaded from: www.investment.infrastructure. gov.au/funding/blackspots/index.aspx A recent evaluation of the programme found that fatal and casualty crashes are reduced at treated sites by 30 per cent, equalling one life per year for every 84 projects. This program delivers genuine results by saving lives and returning around $7.70 for every $1 invested by reducing the number and cost of road crashes.

Boom time for outdoors store

AS what can only be seen as a vote of business confidence, store owner Lindsay Hamley has moved to larger premises. Hartley’s Hunting and Tackleworld is now in Stafford Street, California Gully and boasts nearly four times as much floor space as the previous store. While quick to admit business can be tough at times, Mr Hamley said his store had a plus. “People will only shop with me because they want to,” he said. “They don’t have to shop here because

they need a washing machine or something. “People like their leisure time, and the goods associated with it.” With the larger store, Mr Hamley is trying a new range. “You can even buy a canoe in store now,” he said. “We’re offering an expanded range of sporting items and are more than happy to buy related items in for people if requested.” “We aim to be flexible, and that includes seven-day opening.”

For service to the community

By CHRISTINE McGINN

FIVE local community leaders have received the nation’s highest award, the Order of Australia. Decorated for their generous contribution to our community, local men and woman have been recognised in the general division category. Volunteer firefighter Norman Bowen was awarded for his decades of service in his fire response roles. Mr Bowen established Critical Incident Stress teams, was a group officer at the Bendigo District Rural Fire Brigade, president of the Vic-

Mr Rankins said he accepted the award but inclusively with friends, peers and “all who combine in these community causes”. “The award reflects on no-one more than my wife, Gwen – we are each other’s greatest supporter,” he said. Mr Rankins said tourism in Bendigo had boomed with increased quality and standards of the industry. “Tourism’s importance to Bendigo’s economy is undeniable. Importantly, too, a thriving tourism industry adds a vitality, a quality of life, which benefits both residents and visitors,” he said. Mr Rankins encourages everyone to give back to their community. “We should all be contributors. And, at any age, it’s important to be active in mind and body,” he said. Recognised for his service through the Lions Club International, Graham Allen is proud of the organisation that reaches so many people. “Just the fact it is an international organisation, you can work locally and you have the opportunity to assist the community,” he said. “It is great to be recognised for my work. I have really enjoyed it. You don’t do it for the awards but to benefit others.” Mr Allen said he wanted to keep passing on his knowledge and help people understand the

great role they take on. One of the founders of Girton Grammar and Bendigo Art Gallery Foundation, John Higgs has also been recognised. Mr Higgs said he was one of the founders who had a vision for the school and developed its ideas, curriculum and ethos. Mr Higgs said the art gallery was given to the city in the 1990s to develop, a “watershed moment” in the city’s history. “I have always had a strong sense of community and if we all made a little contribution, it would help us to understand our community so much better. I believe, deep down, it’s about making a difference,” he said. The only female, Joyce Trimble, has been

recognised for her service to the Eaglehawk community. A volunteer for four decades, Country Women’s Association secretary, Dahlia and Arts Festival committee member and youth tutor, Ms Trimble has earned the award. “I am very humbled to be nominated. Eaglehawk is very accepting of anyone who lives here and if you want to be included,” the California Gully resident said. Ms Trimble said her work started when her children entered school and she became involved in various aspects of the community. “It basically hasn’t sunk in yet. I never did anything on my own. I accept the award but I’ve always been a member of a team,” she said. CWA: Joyce Trimble.

Mr Bowen said he was humbled to be nominated, supported over the years by peers, leaders and family. “The award might have my name on it but it belongs to a lot of people,” he said. “I joined the fire service because there was a need and it gave me the opportunity to do a lot of things I wouldn’t have. It’s been a long journey but a pleasant one. “You make really good friends volunteering and then you learn while doing it.” Awarded for his service to Bendigo through tourism, Ted (Edward) Rankins has been instrumental in the city’s growth.

Bendigo Trust may need to be bailed out

From Page 1 Trust chief executive officer Tom Sneddon said pumping costs and delays in the State Government’s W Class tram restoration contracts have created a cash-flow problem. Greater Bendigo council has secretly advanced the Trust $200,000 out of its yearly $450,000 grant for next financial year to help its fiscal stability. Mr Seddon said visitor numbers and costs outside the tram contracts and the pumping had met budgetary expectations. “At the moment I am paying to pump out Bendigo,” he said. “When something like this comes along and affects us to about $250,000 this year we don’t have the fat to wear it.

“In a perfect world we would like the commercial aspects of the Trust to pay for the Trust and the development if its assets. “However that isn’t likely to happen in the near future. These assets need support.” A State Government working group is currently looking for a solution, but in the meantime the Trust, and Bendigo ratepayers, are paying for the emergency fix. “It is impractical to remediate underground,” he said. “So we are stuck with what is underground and what to do about it and who will pay. “The working party is working things through and give a report to the government. “We would like that to happen sooner rather than later.” As part of the money advance,

council has also requested a review of the Trust and what its and council’s expectations of it are, both financially and from a management perspective. Council chief executive officer and Trust board member Craig Niemann said the water issue was

“Council understands the importance of the Bendigo Trust and the role it plays in Bendigo.” The State Government announced an $8m contract with Bendigo Tramways in 2011 to restore part of Melbourne’s historic W Class tram fleet.

When something like this comes along and affects us to about $250,000 this year we don’t have the fat a problem that needed a bigger solution. “This isn’t a city problem, it’s a state problem,” he said. “We are all hanging out for a solution. “If the pumps were turned off, it would spread across Bendigo.

Mr Seddon said there had been delays with the flow of contracts, which, in turn, affected cash flow. “We expected the tram we just started now would be finished in early summer and the next one would be started,” he said.

WARNING: Sensitive content WHEN Robert casually picked up the Bendigo Weekly a few weeks ago and read the stories of St Aidan’s Orphanage he said he started trembling and was filled with anger. “I threw the paper on the couch and said to my wife, ‘Look at that!’ The anger just welled up,” he said. Robert (not his real name) went to St Aidan’s in 1949 when he was six and stayed there until he was nine and as he says, these are crucial years in a child’s life. The boys’ section at St Aidan’s was built in 1910. “I saw terrible things there. So terrible I can’t drive past those gates, I take another route. It just makes me feel sick. The pain of the memories never leave you. I don’t remember any happy times,” he said. “Mum put my brother and me in there for various reasons. One was that she had to work and there was no such thing as child care or welfare payments in those days. “I remember the mornings, they were awful. Every morning another boy and I had to open the big gates in the dark and cold. Then I had to do my duties as an altar boy. “Different priests said mass. One of these priests used to sexually abuse me. I don’t want to give any more details but it was a terrible experience to happen when you are young. Every morning I was scared. Scared of opening the gates in the dark and then scared when I went to the chapel, and the priest, and what waited for me there. “The boys used to eat in the same section as the girls. I saw some terrible floggings there. One time a girl ran

TERRIBLE THINGS: ‘Robert’ is scarred by the horrors he suffered.

away and they caught her. “One of the nuns gave her a terrible flogging with a leather strap like you would never believe. She was brought into the dining hall by two sisters and made to stand there while she was flogged and flogged. We all felt sick in the stomach to see it. It still makes me sick to think about it.

I’d be happy if the whole place had burnt down “It’s not like you push a button and you forget. Sometimes I wish I had amnesia so I could forget. I’d be right then. “Of a night you weren’t allowed to get a drink once you were in bed, so you wouldn’t wet the bed. On a hot night you would get dehydrated. So I used to get up and drink the toilet water as it was flushing. We were made to wear these strange clothes, made of felt I think, I’m not sure what the material was but it was very uncomfortable. And we were with older boys who had mental disabilities. “When I got out I didn’t do well in school at all. I had no idea of family. I don’t think the nuns understood family. We had no idea of money, or work, or how to conduct ourselves in

the world. We had an institutionalised mentality. “Previous to reading these articles I was getting support from Open Place. I haven’t talked to many people about what happened. My wife knows but I am going to get more help now. “Growing up I remember in the 1950s and 60s if you misbehaved the common expression was, ‘We will put you in the orphanage’. There was a reason for that. “It was a horrible looking place, surrounded by paddocks in those days. It looked scary. It’s still painted that terrible blue colour. “We knew about the girls in the laundry and we

knew it was bad. We kids called it ‘the children over’ “I know parts of the building burnt down, as far as I am concerned I’d be happy if the whole place had burnt down. “For those people who complain about running these articles, I would say to them, ‘Did you live there? Did you go through what we went through? If you didn’t then you can keep quiet.’” Our series will continue next week . For immediate support call Lifeline 131 114. Open Place 1800 779 379. THIS year’s Bendigo Writers Festival Schools Day program is looking like a winner with some sessions already booked out. AN imitation firearm and two knives were found on Wednesday afternoon in a car in Eaglehawk. Three men, aged in their 20s, were parked on the side of Sailors Gully Road about 4.30pm when a passer-by noticed a weapon. Police were called to the area and conducted a drive-by of the area, observing what appeared to be a handgun. The area was cordoned off and traffic was restricted in the area. The State Emergency Service conducted a line search of the immediate area. Bendigo Police Acting Sergeant Mark Bell said police took the car back to Bendigo police station for a comprehensive search. One man was interviewed and released pending further inquiries and may be charged at a later date. Another man, wanted for a number of other offences in the Bendigo area, was arrested. Police interviewed the man regarding an aggravated burglary, robbery, theft and serious assault. He was remanded in custody and attended the Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. The third man was interviewed, released and charged in relation to weapons and driving offences. ............................................................ Bendigo Weekly – Friday, June 13, 2014

Trivia adds cash to cause IT is not a trivial matter, but Craig Tonzing has a few reasons to be thankful for trivia For a few weeks in May, trivia fans at the Golden Vine were giving money for an unknown cause. The money was heading for Mr Tonzing’s fundraiser. Mr Tonzing is on the Ride to Conquer Cancer in October, with all money raised going to Peter Mac, but he didn’t even know he was the subject of the pub’s input. “They didn’t even know me and they helped. That’s pretty impressive I think,” Mr Tonzing said. “The Golden Vine is really community minded, and people are really generous.”

Right choice for music LOVING singing is the only prerequisite to be a member of Choice Voices. The Choice Voices community choir is reforming and will perform at the Bendigo library on Thursday, June 19 at 5pm. Choir leader James Rigby said the choir was established in Bendigo four years ago. “The choir has an eclectic, socially inclusive membership,” Mr Rigby said. Mr Rigby is a local musician and choir leader and guides the choir each week. “This includes Australian Indigenous titles to the songs of the Beatles,” he said.

Heidi For Hair is excited to welcome Steff to their team

Mr Tonzing’s goal for fundraising was encouraged by losing his father-in-law to cancer several years ago, and he committed to raising $2500 before the ride. He is already at about $3500 without taking into account all of the Golden Vine’s cash. The ride involves a 100-kilometre ride from Melbourne to Mornington, and a return trip the next day, and Mr Tonzing said he’s up for it. “I am 41 now, and I rode Around the Bay in a Day a few years ago. I am confident I can do it. I’m a keen amateur.” As part of his fundraising, Mr Tonzing is holding his own trivia night on July 12 at the Golden Vine. NO SMOKE: Permits are needed to burn green waste on most properties.

smoked out RESIDENTS are still undertaking backyard burns, despite household green waste burns prohibited on most properties. Properties less than one hectare are not allowed to complete backyard burns of garden waste without a permit. Burning off household and other wastes is prohibited, as well as the use of backyard incinerators, without permission. Greater Bendigo council‘s Environmental Health and Local Laws manager Su-

sannah Milne reminded residents to adhere to the rules. “Any open air burns conducted during the winter months must comply with the city’s environmental local law three,” she said. “An open air fire lit for warmth, cooking or fuel reduction on a property larger than one hectare (10,000 metres square) does not require a permit. “If residents would like to light a fire for these purposes on a smaller property they would require a permit, as it is important

to monitor and reduce the impact of smoke in built-up areas.” Owners on properties one hectare or larger do not require a permit but must have 10 litres of water or a working hose available. Property owners who do not adhere to the local law will be hit with an infringement notice. For more information about backyard burns visit www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/Residents_and_Services/Fire_Prevention or call the Local Laws unit on 5434 6333.

Play the ball, not the man Re: “Keep your distance, Jacob, (Bendigo Weekly, May 16). Yes Jacob, I agree. If I were to submit such arrant nonsense, I too would “keep my distance and not give my full name. Let me enlighten you. All arms of government are part of our great democracy, and the brave take their part. It’s easy to snipe from the shadows. The truth – All that put their name to the public are in politics, and should be lauded for having the guts, even if not on your side. Neither you nor I can state the allegiance of another because they are photographed performing their duties. That’s why we have polling booths. But where were your letters and accusations, when previous proclaimed Greens mayors (one a State candidate) and Labor-leaning mayors have appeared in the press with candidates and members of their persuasion? The snide slur by reference to Ballarat lacks dignity and have you missed the news that the Lord Mayor of Melbourne is a past parliamentary leader of the Liberals and that that council is political and I doubt there is a council in Australia that is not. Or maybe this is just a cheap shot because both father and son have the fortitude to put themselves forward for a side averse to your preference. If only one side is permitted to contribute, then that is totalitarianism. If that is your choice, it is certainly not mine. PS I have never been a member of any party. Play the ball, not the man. Ian Dyett, Kennington

Budget unfair to students AS is clear by this point, the federal budget is hugely unfair to everyone except those with well-lined pockets. Myself and many of my friends have recently started university here in Bendigo at La Trobe. We are studying Psychology, Early Childhood Education, Graphic Design, Business, Law, Nursing and Education, just to name a few. The new budget concerns us greatly, considering a number of us, including myself were already concerned about the debts we would graduate with. I am studying to be a clinical psychologist which takes seven years – I do not want to think of what my total debt will be if this budget is approved We cannot afford deregulation of uni fees and cuts to education. La Trobe Bendigo has already seen strikes this year from teachers, our

dedicated lectures and tutors who are already struggling to make our education as good as it can be with little funding. With these further cuts to both funding and staff levels, running La Trobe will be nigh on impossible. The university will be forced to up its student fees to make ends meet. Christopher Pyne insists that simply because the government deregulates university fees, it does not place any obligation on the institutions to act on this. This is a ridiculous claim, and is an effort to shift the blame of increasing costs upon institutions and away from those with who the real blame lies. Those who say university students are merely a bunch of self-entitled, spoilt brats could not be further from the truth. I am prepared to pay for my degree – however, it is estimated by the Greens’ degree calculator that my undergraduate course of three years will rise to at least $30,030. And I still have one year of Honours plus a PhD to complete following my undergrad. An early childhood education course will increase by more than $6000 – with the pittance our teachers are paid at the moment, students destined for lower paid jobs will be essentially excluded from higher education, as they will be unable to pay off their university debts, which is not what Australia is about. Whatever happened to the ideal of a classless society, where everyone has a fair go, and the underdog is supported, not downtrodden and sneered upon? For that is what the government is trying to instigate. I would like to see how Australia functions in a few years without the next generation of professionals to fill the ranks of the workforce, particularly nurses and teachers. I hope that Abbott and his outof-touch cabinet do not get this budget through parliament. My future, and Australia’s future depend upon it. Rachael Goldsmith, Eaglehawk

editorial

A lasting legacy FOR the past couple of years, the problem of Bendigo’s rising water problem has been sold to us as simply an issue for the Central Deborah Mine. All the conversations, press releases and information have centred around what the Bendigo Trust must do to keep the water at bay from its tourist attraction. What hasn’t been revealed, until now, is it is a much wider problem. The Trust is paying for the water to be pumped out, after the State Government paid for the pumps. However, they are not just doing it for their own good. If the Trust decides it is too much of an impost on their stretched finances to continue to pump the water and close the mine, it will affect us all. Once the water stops flowing into the Central Deborah Mine, it will begin flowing into other disused mine shafts. It will only be a matter of time before the water starts seeping up through the hundreds of former mine shafts in Bendigo, mostly be-

tween Kangaroo Flat and the CBD. That includes the Bendigo Creek, a few spots at Golden Square and the former police station in Rosalind Park. And these are only the places they know about. Also, this is not just everyday groundwater. It is water contaminated by the Bendigo soil and a history of mining. It contains high levels or arsenic, and manganese, as well as salt and sulphur. It is so bad it cannot be mixed in any way with other water, or used for any purpose. Therefore, this is not just an issue for the Trust. It is an issue for the entire city. It is a significant legacy of our mining past, a past approved and regulated by the State Government. Therefore it is up to the State Government to fix. Bendigo ratepayers must not be continually milked to fix a problem we didn’t create. The working group must come up with a safe long-term solution soon, and pay for it.

While on the topic of arsenic and mine tailings, Bendigo lost a significant local this week. Henry Ott was one of the city’s Black Saturday survivors. He drove away from the fire as flames lapped at his car’s tyres. To make it even more notable, he navigated the road by memory, with zero visibility. While February 7, 2009 was a tough day, what followed for Henry, his family and his neighbours was perhaps more frightening. The fire uncovered arsenicladen mine tailings in crown land near his West Bendigo home. Henry led the campaign to rehabilitate the site, often clashing with authorities as they delayed the cleanup. One thing that shone though was Henry’s sense of, and passion for, his home and his community. He was prepared to do what it took, often frustrating the powers that be, to protect and fight for his home and his community. In today’s society, fighting for your home and your community is something to be admired and thanked for.

pk Continuing the journey with Peter Kennedy

IN exactly eight weeks’ time, Bendigo’s cultural hub along View Street will echo to the beat of the third Bendigo Writers Festival, an event whose growth and reputation in such a short time period continues to amaze those of us who have been part of the journey so far. The Bendigo Weekly is especially proud to have been associated with the BWF throughout this time, and together with the major sponsors and supporters in the Greater Bendigo council and La Trobe University, we take some comfort in the fact that the Bendigo Writers Festival has so rapidly emerged to be known as one of the premier events of its type in the country. The shared commitment of the major partners to deliver an event as accomplished and polished as the BWF continues to drive the event to new heights each year. The local touch

LOCAL radiation therapy students will be financially rewarded to return to their communities after studying in Melbourne. Cohuna resident Keeley Robinson is the inaugural recipient of the Bendigo Radiotherapy Foundation scholarship. Ms Robinson took out the $15,000 three-year scholarship and secured a job at the Bendigo Radiotherapy Centre at the end of her studies. The scholarship encourages graduates to return home and work at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre’s Bendigo Radiotherapy Centre for a minimum of two years. Bendigo Radiotherapy Centre site director Tracie Gleisner said attracting local students back to their region was important. “We often find regional students get quite settled in Melbourne after relocating for their studies, often there is little incentive for them to return to Bendigo, Dr Gleisner said. “With the support of a loyal band of supporters at the Bendigo Radiotherapy Foundation, we are working hard to attract local talent back to the region, this scholarship is a huge step toward this goal. The Applied Science university student said the scholarship had helped ease the financial burden of

Ms Robinson decided to start a career in radiation therapy after attending a information session at the Bendigo Radiotherapy Centre.

“I really wanted a job that was patient-oriented and offered the chance for me to spend time with people over a long period of time, she said. “Radiation therapy is perfect for me and gives me a wonderful opportunity to support patients through their illness, over weeks, months and even years.

AUSTRALIAN agribusiness will have a voice in South East Asia next week. The Central Victorian Agribusiness Forum based in Bendigo will be representing the local sector in the Victorian Government’s Super Trade Mission. What’s more the group has secured the Food Boom Summit – Growing the Value Chain to Asia to be held Bendigo in early August. Newly appointed executive officer Martin Szakal will be exploring agribusiness opportunities in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand as part of the initiative. “This is another great opportunity for our local

agribusiness sector to increase our understanding of the growing Asian market, Mr Szakal said. “It also allows us the opportunity to explore

We are seeing a greater recognition and respect how we can improve our value chain approach to these markets. Recent figures generated by a local agribusiness data company found the total estimated value of agriculture operation

in Central Victoria in 2012 was $784 million with the top five EVAO’s for Central Victoria being dairy, mixed farming, grain, pig and crop and plant. CVAF president James Finlay said agribusiness in the region was strong and there was a lot of support from local industry and government to see the region succeed. “We are seeing a greater recognition and respect for the agribusiness sector in our region due to the enormous financial benefit and number of jobs it provides, Mr Finlay said. Gully. The new store at 8 Stafford Street, California Gully continues the traditions of Hartley’s 75 years and adds a whole lot more. Now trading under the name Hartley’s Hunting and Tackle World the growth is obvious as the store itself offers 450 square metres of trading space, almost four times as large as the previous shop. There are now more staff to help you with you every need, be it hunting with gun or bow, or fishing. “We have specialists in all fields here,” owner Lindsay Hamley said. “Jakob shoots, reloads and hunts, and Andrew is a trap shooter in shotgun. Rob is our bow man, and Guy knows all there is to know about fishing. “Our newest staff member Rod has spent forever working in the industry, and knows plenty

about guns and fishing.” The store is purpose built, and even includes an archery range to find out the feel of the bows. “Nearly half of the store is devoted to fishing tackle,” Mr Hamley said. “We even sell canoes now.” “Our clothing range has increased, whether it be for weather protection or camouflage, and we sell

your ammunition while you are here.” Mr Hamley is keen to emphasise the store’s flexibility. “We can sell you items for fishing in the bay, or tackle for tuna fishing,” he said. “We can sell you a fishing licence for Victoria and New South Wales, offer advice on obtaining your firearms licence, and even apply for gun permits online.”

We can sell you items for fishing in the bay, or tackle for tuna fishing binoculars ranging in price from $25 to $2500. “We can satisfy you whether you want to spend a little or a lot.” The store has 150 guns on display, with plenty more in stock both new and secondhand. “If there is a gun you need, ask,” Mr Hamley said. “We deal with most of the main firearm distributors in Australia and can get in what you need, and don’t forget

One thing is for sure, if you have hunting, fishing or target fishing on your mind, Hartley’s Hunting and Tackle World is the first and only store you’ll need. Give the guys a call on 5443 5669, or take a trip to the brand new store at 8 Stafford Street, California Gully. No master of the game Some people are not made to be sporting greats

S

OME of us are made to be sporting geniuses, and some of us are not. I was definitely pitched into the latter, and have failed to do anything really sporty since school cricket and rugby. I think I was given a hatred of sport by my sadistic games masters who seemed to take delight during English winters in making us suffer. I am reminded by our recent bursts of chilly rain in Victoria of many a painful afternoon being forced to run cross country while the games masters drank tea in the changing rooms. It obviously made an impression, this was more than 40 years ago. Their best winter trick came during matches where teams of the same house were playing each other. To save team mix ups due to the same jerseys we played shirts on versus shirts off. Fine if you got to keep your shirts on, but rugby in winter without a shirt was no fun let me tell you.

That’s my excuse by the way, my last venture of any sporting kind at school was scoring for the inter-schools cricket matches. I managed to mess that up too, the only bonus being I did not have to give up my summer evenings after school. I dabbled in squash before realising it was hard and there was good potential for injury due to running into walls or being hit by a hard-bouncing ball. Ouch. I did a round of golf once, and I sort of managed it, but lost my nerve when an angry photographer colleague threw down his club in disgust, and barely missed my head in the bounce. We seemed to spend a lot

in the bar too, so any perceived health gain was lost in beer intake. This year I became involved in a friendly cricket match in the park, and though my early experience should have warned me off, I started fielding to give the youngsters some batting and bowling practice. As you’d expect, before long I was forced to the wicket and faced the genuine bowling aggression of a 12-year-old dynamo. Thankfully we were playing with a tennis ball, they were flying thick and fast, and not after connecting with the bat. When I once barely connected, my running mate at

the other end decided to make the run, despite it being my call. I decided I had to run, it was only a friendly, and set off far too late. As I bounded along I caught my boot, and started a headlong rush to the opposite set of stumps, my legs starting to lose cohesion. In the final couple of yards I stumbled and fell headlong, bat spiralling into space. The long-suffering Mrs Kendall laughed long and loud as I crumpled onto my head, and as the paddock swayed and my head started to ache, I realised again I was not the sporting kind. dear dotty... Dear Dotty, I went to a local pub the other night and the first sign there was something amiss was the noise. At first I thought it was a herd of hyenas who had found a fresh kill. I quickly scanned the room and then I found them. About 20, big buxom girls wearing strapless, short dresses, skirts and tops and mid-drifts; middrifts with far too much drift in them. Their high heels were so high they kept falling off them. But they didn’t just fall. First of all they would try to walk, then wobble, recover, wobble and then crash, sounding louder than a head-on between two locomotives. They wore enough make up to support an entire Maybelline factory, they drank cruisers and were throwing up like there was no tomorrow, which I discovered when I walked into the ladies toilets where I found a mess of spilled alcohol, toilet paper and the occasional heaving girl, toilet bowls an option. I was just wondering if you knew who these girls might be? Somewhat scandalised, Karen Dear Karen, It sounds to me that you have come across the annu-

al celebration of the Snake Gully Girls Netball team. Don’t worry, they only do it once a year and it’s for a good cause, one legged Country and Western singers or some such thing. Dear Dotty, I am continuing to have trouble with my house mates. One boy who was studying Outdoor Education, left unannounced and took his fridge with him. As a result I came home to the front door left open and butter and milk and ice cream slowly going off. Any clues as to how to find a decent house mate. Really annoyed, Elspeth Dear Elspeth, Your first mistake was to take in an Outdoor Education student, by which one can immediately infer that this boy has not had an indoor education. Vet your house mates more carefully and reject any student who is remotely connected to nature. Twitter@DearDotty

HE LOST HEART SIRENS play Castlemaine tonight, and as a double treat Steve Lane and the Autocrats are playing too. Albert Skipper, Skip, is frontman for the Sirens. In many guises, Skip continues to make music, be it as solo artist Bert, or with a band. With his work now on iTunes this prolific performer is also selling CDs too. That and Rock Pride Music in Bendigo puts Skip as a

continuing major player in the local scene. The Lost Heart Sirens started in the guise of a duo, with cellist Lauren Jennings bringing a new sound to the rocker of many years. “The band has evolved a lot since then,” Skip said. “The latest to join is Jacob McGuffie, and it’s a lot of fun.” The band has been in the studio recording, and has eased off from the live scene a bit. “We like to keep the audi-

ence waiting,” Skip said with a chuckle. Skip said the band is a purveyor of love. “Our songs are full of emotion, love, fun, sad. We like to pull the heartstrings of the audience,” he said. Skip writes the music, and is the pivot of the changing lineup, and you get the impression he wouldn’t have it any other way. The Lost Heart Sirens and Steve Lane play the Bridge Hotel in Castlemaine tonight.

Double gig for Audreys

HE Audreys are in Central Victoria with a gig in Kyneton tonight and the Golden Vine in Bendigo on Sunday. They are traversing the country, playing their new album Til My Tears Roll Away live. The Adelaide-based duo of Taasha Coates and Tristan Goodall have also unveiled plans for their live set, guaranteeing they’ll play the blues-rock-folk tinged album in full, followed by audience requests from their first three albums. They are asking fans to leave a message on their

Facebook page, specifying exactly which of the older material they’d like to hear live. The tour represents the first time in more than three years Taasha and Tristan have played live with a full band, on such an extensive level. The 2014 line up includes Shane O’Mara, guitarist extraordinaire and producer of all four The Audreys albums. “We’ve been asking him to tour with us for years and this is the first time he’s said ‘yes’,” Tristan said. Rick Plant, ex-Nashville

player and former Buddy Miller band member will be on bass, with long-time drummer Ben Wiesner joining them again. “We are making a limited edition Monsters EP available exclusively for the shows,” Tristan said. “It involves compiling all four versions of our track Monster, including the previously unreleased Monster Part IV, the package also features a hand pressed, hand drawn cover.” The Audreys play tonight at Kyneton Town Hall and on Sunday at the Golden Vine Hotel, Bendigo.

SAVED: David and Lisa Tatman have found sound business in farmers markets.

Farmers markets saved the farm S

PRING CREEK Organics are a perfect example of what the Bendigo Community Farmers Market is always saying: that shopping at farmers markets benefits our local farmers, and keeps quality, fresh produce from disappearing from our supply chain. Stallholders David and Lisa Tatman started a small farm on two hectares in 1993, selling to wholesale markets. Over time, the farm grew from the original two to 12 hectares, and seven years ago they moved to 35 hectares in Navigators, Victoria (near Ballarat). Then things started to go sour. They were not selling as much; agents would ask them to grow a certain amount and then not take the goods; their income, by now solely dependent on the Melbourne wholesale market, dropped by 50 per cent in a year; their finances began to go backwards. Eventually they realised they only had six months before they would lose all they had worked so hard for. David and Lisa made the decision to try selling at a few farmers markets – and things began to turn around. Now the pair exclusively sells their wide

range of certified organic vegetables directly to shoppers at farmers markets and from their farm gate shop, and the farm is going strong. They now grow a much larger range, in smaller quantities of each. “I can honestly say that doing Farmers Markets has saved our farm, Lisa said. “The bank was ready to take the farm but we decided to have one more go and do farmers markets. “Thank you so much to all our customers and market managers that see the importance of supporting your local farmer, because without you guys, we would not be still farming today. Find the Spring Creek Organics stall at this month’s market on Saturday, June 14, from 9am to 1pm at Sidney Myer Place. For more information on the Bendigo Community Farmers Market, please call Hayley Davis on 0498 186 491, email manager@ bcfm.org.au or visit www.bcfm.org.au. T iS autumn and the days are cooler, daylight savings is at an end, you’re starting to need a jumper in the evenings and there is not the light or the desire to get out into the cold and go for a ride or a run. So after all your good work over summer, now are you going to sit on the couch and put the weight back on? Or are you going to keep your summer body and workout at home with some fitness equipment from mr Rental? mr Rental has equipment that will suit your needs. They have exercise bikes that you can either adjust manually or computer controlled bikes that program in hills and valleys to keep your ride interesting. There are cross trainers that give you a low impact

workout that is like skiing, ideal if you hope to get up to the snow this year. All this equipment is well maintained and nice and quiet so you can still watch TV while you work out. Of course mr Rental also has treadmills that suit all speeds and sizes of people. From a basic walker that can go as slow as you like, right up to a runner that will carry 125kg and go at 16kph and while that might not sound fast compared to a car at 16kph you would travel over 5km in 20 minutes. So if you want to stay fit this autumn and winter then give Daryl and Kristine at mr Rental a call on 5433 5222 or 1800 880 778 or call in to 80b garsed Street, Bendigo.

Whether for birthday parties, company functions or promotional events Bendigo Castle King has a range of jumping castles to suit every occasion. “We’ve recently bought two new castles that are sure to be popular, Bendigo Castle King’s Susan said. “These new castles are ideal for teenagers or for those who want to join in the fun with or without their children. These new adult sized additions supplement Bendigo Castle King’s existing range of popular children’s castles in a variety of themes.

ARY and Mark James provide a mobile seal -a-fridge service. They work on commercial cool rooms, domestic fridges as well as caravan fridges in the Northern Victoria area. “People may not realise a poor seal adds to the running cost of your appliances, Mrs James said. Below is a list of the particular problem areas this enterprising couple can work on to save you money. The seal may have a split or a tear: this means your compressor has to work longer because of the warm air getting in, which in turn means you are using more electricity. Door alignments: with an old broken, torn or cracked seal it is relatively easy to see the problem but a poorly aligned door can be invisible to the fridge owner if you are not

aware that the seal is not adhering to the face of the fridge because the door has dropped. Broken hinges or broken door corners are another problem: a new fridge can be damaged before or during its arrival to your home especially the bottom hinge. Vermin attack on fridges and freezers: something that is not so common is when insects or rats attack the seals on your fridge or freezer stored in the garage or shed. With Skope brand glass drinks cabinets and under counter fridges we have found over time the thermal liners start to deteriorate and need to be replaced when a new seal is put in. Handymen can buy seals from Seal a Fridge and do the job themselves. For all inquiries phone Mary and Mark on 0408 883 715.

A man of influence I

N 1859 the firm of A’fok, Fok Sing were responsible for the erection of the Chinese brick kiln close to the Ironbark Chinese Camp at Emu Point, North Bendigo. Some years before this important enterprise being initiated, Fok Sing was already in the news. On the night of September 13, 1856, there had been a disturbance at the Ironbark Chinese Camp, Fok Sing having had a role in this event, ex officio, as the head man of the Four Districts or Toi Shan group within the camp. From the information that had been gleaned from this disturbance it is clear that another group within the camp belonged to a different society and they also had their own headman, A’ Kin. Because of some dispute A’ Kin had sought assistance from the Caucasian authorities and brought them to the camp regarding the disagreement between his less numerous Five Districts group and that of Fok Sing. When the police arrived at the camp, the two opposing sides were lined up opposite each other, both groups had equipped themselves for

a skirmish, having stones, sticks and some holding short swords. One of the men in Fok Sing’s group, Chow Ching discharged a pistol several times. Constable Ryan quickly tackled Chow Ching to the ground and secured him and kept him from doing any harm. A volley of stones were thrown by both sides and some blows hit their mark and as was reported that here was a lot of noise, “No person was kilt (sic)”. Four men were arrested from this affray, A’ Kin, Chow Ching, Long Foo and Fok Sing being charged with ‘riot’. When the men appeared in the Court of Petty Sessions before the Police Magistrate Lachlan McLachlan, further details were brought to light. Fok Sing had advised his group not to fight, however the disturbance did briefly take place. The authority that both A’ Kin and Fok Sing could exercise within their respective groups or clans became evident through the course of the case. Mr McLachlan determined that the charge of riot could not be sustained, however both A’ Kin and Fok Sing as the headmen were bound

over, to ‘keep the peace’. Some weeks ago I mentioned about the murder of Sophia Lewis, a lady of the night, our man of influence Fok Sing had organised as head man a reward of £60 in July 1857 for the apprehension of Hing Tzan. Hing Tzan was one of the principal characters involved in the Lewis murder, he had been evading justice for some time. Eaglehawk was where Hing Tzan, had eventually been spotted, he had been hiding in some bushes, but was apprehended by some of his countrymen who turned him over to the authorities. While in transit to the Government Camp at Camp Hill, Hing Tzan

revealed the names of the other men who had been involved in the crime. The police in Bendigo had an inkling of the knowledge that Fok Sing was in possession of regarding the Sophia Lewis murder, hence he had been arrested. Through the network of the secret societies in existence amongst the Chinese, the chief perpetrator was finally brought to heel. A Chinese theatrical company had come to Bendigo in 1858 to perform at the Haymarket Theatre in Mundy Street. Fok Sing had been one of the organisers who brought this company to the Bendigo goldfield. Tickets had been pre-

sold for the performances. Both Caucasians and Chinese were curious, or interested, to watch this visiting theatre company. One of the patrons, Joseph Cook, took exception to the fact that Fok Sing had directed him to go to the stalls. Cook sued Fok Sing for £40 over the theatre incident, for not having the correct ticket, however after a lengthy parade of witnesses the court assessors delivered a verdict that Fok Sing reimburse Cook for four shillings. Our photograph shows the fire box of the A’fok, Fok Sing brick kiln at North Bendigo, at the time that it was first excavated in 2005.

Hall works under way T

HE Soldier’s Memorial Hall faces a drier future thanks to Greater Bendigo council. Council has funded and organised the installation of a new waterproof membrane to protect the concrete balcony. The old membrane was buckled and badly damaged, causing water to leak through the Pall Mall building. The memorial was opened on November 15, 1921 to commemorate all those from Bendigo who served and died in World War I. Local architect G D Garvin, of the architectural partnership W Beebe and G D Garvin, designed the building that features a unique band rotunda in the middle of the balcony. The new membrane will ensure the memorial, its rotunda and bronze honour roll featuring the names of the 2300 men and women who served and gave their lives during World War I will be properly protected. – Megan McDougall

Thornton area fires up for local fly fishers FLY FISHING

JOE SINGE

S

TEVE Charles has recently told me of a successful trip last month. At the beginning of May, new Bendigo Fly Fishing Club member Leon Schoots and Steve went up to Thornton to fish the Goulburn and Rubicon Rivers. The Goulburn was flowing at about 1500 MLD which was great for fishing and there were plenty of caddis and the odd Kossie Dun in evidence throughout the day and evening. On Friday they fished the Goulburn where Leon caught many fish, mostly during the day on small pheasant tail nymphs and one big brownie on a caddis off the surface. He was a solid brown trout between 1400 and 1800 grams that had Leon running down stream after the fish for fear of

breaking off. He was released to fight again another day. Steve picked up a 52cm brownie on last light using an iron-blue paradun. He was in beautiful condition but light for his length. He weighed in at 1125 grams but he wasn’t slabby at all. The following Saturday they fished the Rubicon where Leon picked up two small browns early. They had many a hookup and “early release” in the stretch of river close to Thornton and heard from some lure fishermen that brook trout had recently been released into the Rubicon from one of the local hatcheries. Intriguing, but they couldn’t find any before heading back to the Goulburn for the evening rise and where they each picked up a small rainbows on the dry. Steve and Leon certainly had an entertaining couple of days fishing staying at the GVFFC cabin in Thornton. Where at $150 for the night

it’s top notch accommodation. Great value if you split it between three or four anglers After getting a taste for it, they couldn’t resist a return day trip the following Friday. Where they targeted the section of the Rubicon up towards the power station where it wasn’t long before they were chasing brookies in the shallow pools. They caught and released four solid fish to 1400 grams for the day but sighed another 20 plus. They got them all on small nymphs suspended under dries. Small pools, runs, riffles, overhanging trees and loads of snags made for challenging fishing, but the beautiful surrounds with lots of fish made for a great day’s fishing.

RIVER ACTION: Leon Schoots had a trip to remember with decent sized brook trout (insert) during May.

ULWALA was the destination for the final round of the 2013/14 Central Victorian Lure Casters Super Series last month. A wet start greeted the 79 competitors who enjoyed some productive fishing with 38 Murray cod and two golden perch landed. A remarkable effort considering the competition only lasts a few hours. Broadford angler Paul Thomas went home $550 richer after landing the largest cod for the day on a Bassman spinnerbait. While round winner Michael Miller troubled the scorer with three legal and two undersized cod casting McGrath Spinnerbaits. Second place went Kyle Dalrymple with two legal cod who was closely followed by Jamie Roberts, again with two legal cod. Jamie Roberts was the season’s overall champion and also the winner of the Bendigo Marine end of season fish off winning a Lowrance sounder and prize pack courtesy of Bendigo Marine. Competition organiser Jarrod Martin said that was the competition’s most successful season yet and will be returning with a new season in late spring, keep an eye on their website www. cvlcss.com.au for future details. of all sponsors and competitors who contributed $2871 towards future fish stockings throughout the season with their regular raffles. Autumn has had Bendigo anglers travelling far and wide with varying levels of success. John Telford and a group of Bendigo anglers have recently returned from memorable Northern Territory trip to Manigoria Station just outside Borroloola. Where they reported good catches of Jewfish and barramundi to 92cm along with regular catches of queen fish and golden snapper. Mick O’Connor also got among the barramundi further east at Burketown. Closer to home Wayne Symons and Anthony Griffith spent a few days between Loch 7 and 8 during May trolling up several good sized Murray cod and solid golden perch. The much anticipated Bendigo Legion Angling Club monthly trip saw members enjoy the hospitality of the Balranald Angling Club on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River on May 16 and 17. Three golden perch and a silver bream were the only notable catches among the many European carp that kept anglers amused. Closer to home Mulwala and upper Torrumbarry on the Murray have been keeping anglers busy and none have returned home happier than Carl Thompson with a 77cm Murray Cod trolled up on a black and gold Stump Jumper from Torrumbarry recently.

Split round offers a clash ANOTHER clash between 2013 grand finalists Golden Square and Strathfieldsaye will be the headline act to kick off the Bendigo Football Netball League’s split round 10 on Saturday. The first grand final rematch took place in round one at Storm’s Flight Centre Park base, with the undermanned home side running out 35-point winners. The Storm has been building in recent weeks though, regaining forward trio Lachlan Sharp, Tom Bartholomew and Sam Mildren as well as full back Leigh Prior and winning their last five contests by an average of 88 points. Golden Square has added Corey Jones into its side since the teams first crossed paths and also has the potential return of captain Simon Rosa and Rick Ladson to look forward to. Rosa was hoping this week to get through the team’s final training session on Thursday night in order to play his first game in eight weeks. “Hopefully I can get through training this week

and get out there, it’s been too long and it’s always a great challenge to go up against a good side like Strathfieldsaye,” Rosa, who hasn’t played since round three against Kangaroo Flat, said.

We have a much younger group this year than we are used to “The boys have been a bit up and down throughout the season but our last few weeks have been a little more consistent. “We have a much younger group this year than we are used to but it is starting to come together now and Saturday will be a great test to see where we are at against probably the benchmark

side in the competition.” Rosa stressed the importance of a full team effort against the Storm, who are an extremely well-balanced side. “They have a great balance across their side, so we will need to make sure we have 22 contributors on the day,” he said. “You don’t beat sides like Sandhurst and Strathfieldsaye with only 10 or 11 guys playing their role on the day. “They have a good forward line which everyone is aware of and they have a strong midfield, so we will need to put pressure on in the middle and limit their supply forward and hopefully kick a winning score ourselves.” In Saturday’s other game, Eaglehawk hosts Kyneton at Canterbury Park in an important clash for two finals aspirants. The split round will be completed next week when Sandhurst faces South Bendigo, Castlemaine hosts Gisborne and Maryborough is at home to Kangaroo Flat.

Discipline key for FC Bendigo By JOEL PETERSON

CANBERRA CLASH: Braves hope to down Canberra. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Braves build for season run THE Bendigo Bank Braves face a critical clash with Canberra on Saturday as the team aims to build momentum heading into the second half of the season. The Braves sit fifth in the South East Australian Basketball league’s south conference with a 6-7 record. On the road this season the Braves have been less than stellar going 2-3, and

has played Canberra once for an 88-94 loss. However, the Gunners (5-9, sixth in the south conference) have only won one game at home this season. Bendigo sits only one game outside a playoff position, with Hobart (7-6) currently sitting in fourth on the south conference table. The Champions IGA Lady Braves have a far easier

assignment against Canberra, with the Capitals Academy not registering a win this season. The Lady Braves currently sit atop the south conference table, equal with Kilsyth at 9-3 but ahead on percentage. The Lady Braves take on the Capitals academy from 5.30pm on Saturday, before the men do battle from 7.30pm.

COMPLACENCY will not be an issue for FC Bendigo as it chases consecutive wins in the NPL1 competition this Saturday night, according to coach Steve Martin. Bendigo takes on Brunswick City, who are last on the table with only one win and no draws as yet in the NPL’s inaugural season. A side getting complacent would come into play for most coaches whose teams are facing the bottom side, but Martin said his group are focused purely on themselves and are under no illusions of where they are at. “There’s definitely no room for complacency, we’re a team that is still building and trying to improve,” Martin said this week. “Something we want to take out of last week is that disciplined effort, and it doesn’t matter who we play and where they are on the table, if we do that the results will take care of themselves.” Last week the blue and gold took its third win of the season and also recorded its first clean sheet of the season in a 1-0 win over Kingston City. Strathdale forward Jonathan Ryan’s 29th minute strike was enough for Bendigo as it held on for victory at Clayton’s The Grange reserve. This week Bendigo will have the home ground advantage at Tom Flood Sports Cen-

tre, and Martin hopes his side can capitalise on it for a second home win of the year. “We have had great support and have really loyal fans and they have given us a boost every time we have played in Bendigo,” he said. “Now it is about rewarding them and ourselves by playing disciplined football for a full 90 minutes, and getting the result we are after.” Two “D-words” will be key for Martin and his side this week: the aforementioned discipline as well as defence. With last week being the first time FC Bendigo has conceded less than two goals, the back half will have to play to its structures, something it has struggled to do at times with costly results. “We really need to have that defensive mindset, and work hard for each other as a group,” Martin said. “That’s when we are at our best. When we play that style of football we are really strong, but need to cut out those lapses in concentration that have hurt us. “If we can do that it bodes well, not only for this week but going forward as well.” Bendigo’s game against Brunswick City kicks off at 7pm. Preceding the seniors clash will be the under-20 game between last-placed Bendigo and fifth-placed Brunswick that gets underway at 5pm.

From Page 40 Both will be making their Commonwealth Games debut when the games kick off in late July. Tim Decker, another Bendigonian, will coach the men’s track endurance team at the games. O’Shea will be joined by fellow 2014 team pursuit world champions Alexander Edmondson, Luke Davison and another Decker graduate in Miles Scotson. Decker said the lineup is strong, and evenly balanced over a number of events. “I feel we’ll have a strong showing in points race with O’Shea and Bobridge and in the scratch race, and we also have 2013 world championships bronze medallist in Luke Davison,â€? Decker said. “The team pursuit selections were tough, it is never easy when a world champion doesn’t make the cut (Mitchell Mulhern). But one of our focuses is having enough strengths to cover off all of the races at the Commonwealth Games.â€? The selection came just days before O’Shea’s 25th birthday, which he will celebrate on Saturday. The former Eaglehawk resident has made the switch to more road racing this season, placing eighth overall in the Jayco Herald Sun Tour.

On the other hand, Mullens has also enjoyed a stellar 2014 to date, placing second in the Australian Criterium Championship in January and diving head first into her first full season on the road with the Wiggle Honda squad. She also took out the Australian Cross-Country Eliminator Championships, and placed fourth at the same event at the 4th UCI MTB World Cup in Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic. “A very strong team will repre-

sent Australia in the XCO Mountain Bike race at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, with the Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike track expected to suit our riders as it’s fast and flowing with some extreme technical features, MTB coach Donna Dall said. Fellow Bendigonians Glenn Warfe and Jeff Tho will also travel to Glasgow, as they were selected in the Australian badminton team announced this week. Tho will play men’s singles, with the experienced Warfe – in his third

and a team competition. Malaysia took the majority of medals at the Delhi games – four golds to India’s two – and will again be the hardest to beat, especially in the men’s competition. “Malaysia will be favourites, Bundgaard said. “But they changed combinations recently which could make the draw exciting. Everything could be decided by the draw. The Games run from July 23 to August 3 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Opals return for Snell BENDIGO Spirit recruit Belinda Snell will make a long-anticipated return to the Australian Opals fold this month when she joins a 20-player camp in Canberra on June 15. Snell and Marianna Tolo return for their first involvement in the Opals campaign to the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women after successful seasons in Europe. Completing her second season in France, Tolo helped Bourges reach the LFB French League Finals and Euroleague Semi Finals, while Cayla Francis has been named in the squad after a strong campaign for Nantes. It was another exceptional season in Poland for Snell, who led her team in scoring in both domestic competition and the Euroleague. It was announced last month Snell will also suit up for the Bendigo Spirit for the next two years, in a coup for both the club and the WNBL. Fellow Spirit stars Gabe Richards, Kelly Wilson and Tessa Lavey will also join Snell at the camp as they vie for selection to play at the World Championships later this year. Opals coach Brendan Joyce said the addition of the European trio would add another element of experience and competition to his squad. “It’s great to have players of

Commonwealth Games – and Raymond Tam will pay in the doubles. “We have some good talent in the singles but probably just outside the medals at this stage, head coach Lasse Bundgaard said. The doubles is another matter, although changes in combinations by some of the stronger Commonwealth teams may make the seedings, and the draw, unpredictable. Six medals will be on offer in Glasgow – men’s and women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles

SOME of Australia’s best jumps racing horses will hit the track at the Bendigo Jockey Club this Sunday, for the Mosstrooper Steeplechase day. Run over 3600 metres, the $100,000 Mosstrooper is the feature event on the eight-race card that also features the $100,000 Brendan Dreschler Hurdle. Both races will count toward the JJ Houlahan championship, awarded to Victoria’s premier jumper and trainer. program ahead of next month’s tour of Japan. The Spirit quartet will be joined by a star studded lineup of international calibre players – led by 2012 Olympic bronze medallists Liz Cambage, Laura Hodges, Jenni Screen and Rachel Jarry. The pre-eminent Australian hurdles champion, Bashboy, has been entered into the Mosstrooper steeple and will be looking to defend its 2013 crown.
