Haven pushes for tolerance LOCALS are continuing the fight for Bendigo’s name, against intolerance and negative media coverage. More than 2100 locals have signed a petition calling on Bendigo to fight back against those showing the city in a bad light, after Greater Bendigo council approved the building of the city’s first mosque.

IT has been a club with no place to call home, no place to hang a team photo, seemingly no place within the Bendigo football community, and at the end of the year the Bendigo Gold will be no longer. The club made the decision this week not to renew its licence for the 2015 VFL season, meaning the club

will fold at the end of this season. A week that started with heartbreak when the Gold lost to Northern Blues on the last kick of its round 11 clash on Sunday, continued when, on Wednesday night, Gold coach Aussie Jones and chairman Tim Dickson told the playing group and support

staff of the club’s decision. Jones has been the face of the club, and a face of much-needed positivity after moving his young family to Bendigo to take on the job in 2012. He said while the decision was regrettable and a tough one to make, it was the right thing to do by the club,

its players and supporters. “There is no doubt it is disappointing, especially because of the time and investment everyone associated with the club has put in,” he said. “Tim and I have obviously been mentioned but it’s a lot deeper than

MP stands up for city

BY ANTHONY RADFORD

MEMBER for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan has moved to paint a better picture of Bendigo in light of the mosque debate. In parliament on Wednesday, Ms Allan praised Greater Bendigo council for approving the plans. “Last Wednesday evening, seven City of Greater Bendigo councillors stared down intolerance and intimidation to support a planning application to build a mosque in Bendigo,” she said. “Bendigo is stronger for the actions of our council last week. “As a community we stand proudly for tolerance, respect and diversity.

“Our great city was built by migrants, migrants who flocked to Central Victoria from around the world in search of gold, and who stayed on to build a home and a community.” Ms Allan said unfortunate-

“And I particularly condemn black balloons being tied to the homes and offices of those of us who have stood up in support of a mosque being constructed in Bendigo. “This use of a ‘marker’ to

As a community we stand proudly for tolerance, respect and diversity ly the focus of last week’s council meeting was “on those who tried to divide the community I am proud to represent”. “There have been many reports of the words and actions of those who preach hatred towards others – something I condemn,” she said.

identify people is unpalatable. “A message I do want to convey to this parliament and beyond is: please do not judge Bendigo by the actions of a few who seek to manipulate this issue. “Bendigo is a fair, just and welcoming community. “

Muslims mark the start of Ramadam MUSLIMS will celebrate the start of the holiest month on the Islamic calendar on Sunday, – Ramadan. The Islamic community will start the fast, celebrate all the blessings in their lives and cleanse their thoughts and minds. Bendigo Islamic Association committee member Heri Febriyanto said it was a time of spirituality and rejuvenation. “We have the ritual of fasting for the month of Ramadan. It is a personal retreat spirituality, socially and physically,” he said. “During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having relations with their spouses during daylight hours. It is a time for Muslims to immerse themselves in worship, prayer and reciting the holy Koran.” Fasting from dawn to sunset, Muslims go without food and water, to represent selfsacrifice and count their lives’ fortunes. Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Service board secretary Sylvia Phan said it was period of reflection followed by celebration. “Ramadan is the most holiest season on the Muslim calendar and it is the time of the year where they can fast, cleanse to look back at what they have done and do a lot of charitable work,” she said. “It is basically all about cleansing, very much the way

we do Lent in the Christian calendar. At Lent we fast, not from day to dawn but we fast in other ways. Celebration and charity are the running themes of both fasts. “There are many similarities between the religions. The beliefs that we take a month off to reflect and celebrate blessings we have received is part of both religions. This is where we can learn that we are really not all that different.” Muslims will give to charities, donate goods or their time and even invite less fortunate people to join their evening meal. “Charity is very important in Islam especially in Ramadan. It is one of the really great things in the holy month,” Mr Febriyanto said. Muslims will join together to eat at night and celebrate their strength to fast all day. Mr Febriyanto said most local Muslims will break fast together on the weekends, sharing dinner and then praying together. “For the period of Ramadan, we reflect on ourselves, we feel we may have shortcomings and could do more. During Ramadan we are supposed to refrain from doing anything that is not good in our lives, food and drink are a symbol of that,” Ms Phan said. “We also reflect on the great things that have happened to us.” Non-Muslims are also in-

Charting a shared history

Ms Allan also praised the local media. “Our local media outlets have played an important role through this debate, keeping the community informed by making sure Bendigo’s good name is not trashed,” she said. “It is now known that key agitators on this issue are not residents of Bendigo. “It is totally unacceptable for people outside of Bendigo to abuse our civic processes and divide our community in pursuit of their own disreputable agenda. “Those of us who are privileged to hold a leadership position in the Bendigo community must carry out our duties in an informed and responsible manner.”

By JAMES LERK

REMARKABLY, few Bendigonians realise we have had Muslim believers in our midst since the mid 1850s. So, why did people from many countries and faiths decide to come here in the past as well as the present? Opportunity for themselves, and their families, was always the motivation. In the early decades of Bendigo’s existence it was rare for Muslims within the population to be able to gather together. We only need to think of the difficulties in communication in that period. However, there are documented accounts of gatherings of Muslims at particularly auspicious times for them. They gathered in Rosalind Park of the Lower Reserve as it was still being called. They had come together to celebrate the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Quite a number of our Muslim pioneers were single men, so they gathered and broke the fast of Ramadan together in the traditional way by eating some delectable sweets followed by all the types of food that any of us would enjoy immensely. Normally this would be done with family but many were countless thousands of kilometres away. Yes, these gatherings had their curious local onlookers, but they were never attacked or shooed away, in fact the onlookers were invited to partake of the food as well, because charity is one of the pillars of Islam. Unfortunately, when various things about people and their activities were reported in the local press, regarding these “Mahomadans” invariably they were referred to as “Hindoos”. This showed a total ignorance of their belief. For as Judaism, Christianity and Islam these are

vited to participate in the 30day celebration, based on the lunar cycle calendar. “Ramadan is not a very publicised event (in Bendigo) and is rather insular because they are not sure if people would take to it,” Ms Phan said. “Previously when there was a very small number of Muslims in Bendigo there wasn’t really a need (to publicise)... But now with the increased numbers because of the skilled

migration, there might be a need to include the community in order that they could get together with the community and the get to know people.” Mr Febriyanto said they wanted to invite locals to join in their celebration at the end of Ramadan. “We will have a celebration and we are looking to invite community leaders and other people who support us to join in,” he said.

all monotheistic religions that come from the same roots of Abraham. To add to the lack of knowledge of the Goldrush population, the Sikhs were also referred to as “Hindoos”. Many a surrounding farmer’s wife was delighted to see the “Indian Hawker’s” arrival with his well laden wagon offering the lady everything that her heart would desire, just like the arrival of a miniature shopping centre. A number of these hawkers were of the Muslim faith. We can read in the Police Gazette of 1897 that a hawker who was based in Dowling Street, now called Hopetoun, had his faithful horse stolen early in December. The thief was “not another Muslim” but an Anglo Saxon. The owner of the bay mare was a local Muslim called Mahomad Allie. We learn from early records that there were a number of “Malays” working on the goldfields, there was a dispute between two of these men from the British Straits Settlements, Adee and Ishmael. They went to court to settle their differences, however in 1858 a Koran could not be found immediately within the court environment in order for them to take their oath. Their case was thus dismissed however a few days later a local bibliophile produced a copy of the Koran. So if future cases arose involving Muslims this holy book could be borrowed. In my Discover Bendigo series on March 10, 2006, I mentioned something about the life of a hawker Mohammed Mirrim Bux. He hailed from the subcontinent and was an active Muslim. A descendent of his was Bendigonian Des Duguid, who had won a bronze medal for boxing at the Rome Olympics.

Uni plans change

LA TROBE University has unveiled the latest step in its restructure plans, brought on by Federal Government cuts. The university is trying to save $65 million to shore up its future amid a turbulent period. It will cut about 350 jobs (10 per cent of the workforce) across all campuses, and this week began negotiations with some staff about how the restructure will look. Staff from at least two schools on the Bendigo campus began talking with management this week, with the rest of them expected to be complete by next week. Staff and management will then work together to see whether there are better ways to achieve the same goals. In a broad range of reforms, the university will include a new simpler suite of courses, a range of curriculum reforms, a focus on existing research strengths and innovation in teaching, including a greater emphasis on blending face-to face with online learning. La Trobe Vice Chancellor

John Dewar said the package was the single largest set of reforms proposed for the university in its 50 year history. Most of the changes were first flagged in the university’s 2012 strategic document and have been several years in the planning. The need for change was also flagged with staff last year, due to factors including a Federal Government efficiency

will also modernise what we do and how we do it, so we remain relevant and efficient. “La Trobe will continue to be a great university and these reforms will set us on a path to a stronger future in a new era. We are revitalising ourselves for another 50 years of teaching, intellectual enquiry and excellence.” Some of the other changes being proposed include:

We will continue to deliver in our areas of strength in teaching [and] research dividend, rising costs and lower than expected student enrolments. “La Trobe is a quality university that has since its inception been making a real difference to students and communities on issues that matter,” Professor Dewar said. “We will continue to deliver in our areas of strength in teaching, research and community engagement, but we

• The creation of five flagship Arts degrees and new Education courses (the Bendigo campus is home of the Education School) • A closer connection between health sciences teaching and clinical placements • A greater focus on student support services • Stronger teaching links with business and industry • More use of technology to foster learning teaching

innovation and flexibility • The merger of five faculties to two colleges, 15 Schools to 11, and 48 Departments to 29 • The streamlining and simplification of administrative functions such as IT and Finance Professor Dewar said the reforms were well-considered and timely, given recent announcements by the Federal Government. “The Australian university sector is entering a period of radical reform,” he said. “We must adapt to the likely reality of market deregulation, reduced federal funding and much greater competition both between universities and other tertiary education providers – both public and private. “In addition, we need to assure our students that we are not passing onto them the costs of our own inefficiencies.” It is hoped the bulk of reforms will be in place before the 2015 university year.

Proud’s heads online PROUD’s Hi-Fi is beating to a new sound with an online store. Closing their doors on Pall Mall on Saturday, Colin Proud is opening a new window, taking the same community-loved business online. For 38 years, Mr Proud has opened a physical door to his beloved store, whether in Mitchell Street, Hargreaves Street or to Pall Mall. “It’s been a rollercoaster ride, it’s been great,” he said. “We started as a service business and then moved into a retail-type organisation. Retail hasn’t been easy but by the same token this business has always been very profitable.” Mr Proud was working in a retail store selling audio equipment and thought he’d like to make a business out of it. Homeless organisation Haven; Home, Safe has taken the next step, and the Bendigo Weekly is joining them. The organisation, led by Ken Marchingo, has started up a facebook page This is Bendigo, and a twitter account @thisisbendigo. The group has also printed a poster to help locals show support for the city and its multicultural past, present and future. About 500 posters will be available from Haven’s Forest Street headquarters from today, and are printed on page 19 of today’s Weekly. The posters state: “We believe in a prosperous, multicultural community of people living together in peace and freedom. “As citizens of Bendigo, we have a commitment to various values and institutions. These include parliamentary democracy, equality before the law, freedom of the individual, freedom of speech and religion, equality between men and women, and equality of opportunity for all. “Citizenship also brings civil and social rights, the right to express our cultural heritage and beliefs, coupled with a responsibility to accept the rights of others to express their heritage and beliefs.” Haven chief executive officer Ken Marchingo asked local businesses and households to show their support for a multicultural Bendigo by displaying the posters. “What the commentary and the discussion has descended to has moved from a planning objection,” he said. “What we saw was an organised mob. “People are entitled to their view, but when it is organised and promotes views about hate speech, we need to defend the community’s right to worship and live as they see fit and to participate as they see fit.” Mr Marchingo said the poster was not about whether or not people support a mosque. “To me, that is a no-brainer,” he said. “It is about (outsiders) who would organise to shut down the right of citizenship. “We ask locals to hang this poster in their homes and their businesses and talk to their neighbours about it. “People, when confronted with these issues, often want to do something but don’t know what. “Here is an easy solution. “Put up the poster, post something positive on the This is Bendigo facebook page. “It is a place to celebrate what a great place Bendigo is.” Weekly editor Anthony Radford said it was an important message. “In the past week or so we have seen way too much negative press about Bendigo,” he said. “It has painted an ugly picture of Bendigo that is just not true. “Bendigonians are tolerant, considered and compassionate people, and we need to get that message out. “Everyone, whatever their cultural background or religion, is welcome in Bendigo and it is about time more people knew that. “This is a great way of doing that, and I congratulate Haven and Ken for the concept.”

The sisterhood of pain: what came next Over the past weeks we have chronicled the experiences of several women who lived at St Aidan’s Orphanage as young girls. Today, Dianne Dempsey tells us what happened to these girls when they left the convent. Kathleen Couglin (deceased) ORIGINALLY diagnosed with tuberculosis, my second cousin Kathleen was put to bed on the veranda of St Aidan’s for 13 years. She was in bed for so long that her limbs atrophied. One day a doctor decided to give her a check up and pronounced her a very fit cripple. It was decided that Kathleen, now in her late 30s, could go home and live with her sister but before that happened, Kathleen wanted to do one thing very badly. She wanted to go Melbourne on the train and visit her special friend from the orphanage. Her family thought the trip would kill her but in this matter she was determined. She went to Melbourne and had the trip of her life. .......................................................... AFTER Francine Callanan’s story was run in the Bendigo Weekly earlier this month, she gave me a phone call. “You have no idea what has happened,” she said. “I have found my second family, the people who cared for me as a little girl.” But, on first leaving St Aidan’s, Francine dropped out of high school and hung out at the mall. She was homeless for a while and slept at friends’ houses. For many years she struggled with depression and worked in dead-end jobs. She eventually trained to be a teacher’s aide at Bendigo TAFE. She lives with her partner in Bendigo and says of her two children, “I got my childhood back through them. Making play dough, reading and drawing together, cuddling them, giving them kisses,

that’s what made me happy, made me whole”. .......................................................... AFTER being raised by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd since she was three, Michelle O’Donohue was sent out into the world to fend for herself when she was 15. “It was ‘see you later, you’re on your own now’,” she said. A social worker placed her in a home in the Melbourne suburb of

of mascara running down my face.” Michelle lived a nomadic life working in a variety of jobs for many years. “I always knew when to leave an abusive relationship,” she tells me proudly. Settled back in Bendigo, she says she is happy and loves her life – her friends and family. Michelle currently works in retail and is doing a computer course. She has a partner and three children who she loves. In regard to her children she says, “I always do the opposite to how I was treated. I am a triumph over how I was brought up”. .......................................................... Beverley Foster was placed in Maryfields as a 12-year-old, on September 27, 1969. After three years of working in the laundry and harrowing, physical abuse, Beverley left St Aidan’s on June 12, 1972. Not long after she left the orphanage, aged 16, Beverley had a child. Her boyfriend kept her a prisoner in her own home.

ON HER OWN: Michelle. Jacana with a woman who Michelle greatly liked and admired. “One day she came home and I was playing records too loudly with my friends,” she said. “I was playing Alice Cooper. She kicked me out. She wouldn’t let me stay, although I begged and begged her. I cried so much I looked like the photo of Alice Cooper on the record cover with long black streaks

We were never cuddled, we had no affection When she was in hospital with her new baby he came to the hospital and beat her up there. “The hospital staff had to keep him away,” she said. Out in the world, Beverley said most of her St Aidan’s friends had problems building relationships

REUNITED: Francine with her foster mum Beryl and Laylah. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN with their own children. “We were never cuddled, we had no affection. We didn’t know how to be good parents ourselves,” she said. “And we were told never to speak about what happened, this stopped a lot of us from complaining about our past. I think they knew, the nuns, they knew what happened to us was wrong.” .......................................................... “WE had to find out for ourselves how to love,” Dot Foster-Hyndeman, 57, said. “My sister who was in the children’s part of the convent committed suicide. “We know quite a few girls who committed suicide. It was a loss of love. “We just had to feel our way through life. We had no life skills.

We had no idea of how to get on a bus or apply for a job. “Most of us still suffer from clinical depression. Our childhood still upsets all of us.” .......................................................... CHERYL, 56, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that when the orphanage was shut the girls tried to keep in touch with each other. “We had no other family. But we have each other today,” she said. That is their consolation, that they have each other, their unique allegiance – their sisterhood of pain. For immediate support call Lifeline 131 114. Open Place 1800 779 379. THERE is some very public support for Bendigo singer John Lingard. John is down to the live finals in TV’s The Voice and it’s all down to the public vote. In a part guerilla and part public campaign a support group has decided to paint the town red in a bid to pull in the winning votes. Chancery Lane has been renamed in honour of the singer, and newlybadged Lingard Lane is a very prominent boost for the singer’s chances.

Some stores are offering discounts with others showing their colours in support of John. “It’s unbelievably kind. I’m so flattered and encouraged that Bendigo would get behind me like this,” John said. Now he’s on the final stretch, John said he welcomed the support. “After my performance I knew immediately it wasn’t the best performance and so I felt a bit deflated,” he said. “After hearing how much Bendigo is rallying behind me it’s given me a huge boost. I’m trying to

just enjoy this week knowing it could be my last in the competition but I also don’t want to give up, Bendigo has given me hope.” It’s not all been hard work for John though. “The show has been big, but sitting with Kylie and watching Coldplay was one of the happiest moments of my life,” he said. Fi Rooke of retailer Robe had the honour of unveiling the new Lingard Lane sign and is fully behind John. “He supports us, so now it’s time to support him,” she said. “He’s a great singer,

and he’s done so well on his own, but now it’s our chance to give him a helping hand. “He said he’ll bring Kylie to town too.” A member of team John, who wants to remain nameless, had a very strong message for the city. “I am thinking red balloons, red anything. Perhaps people could do it over the weekend and deck their shopfront or windows out in red,” she said. “Importantly text in a vote. Send ‘Lingard’ to 199 55 999. “Let’s do it for The Voice, for John, the Bendigo Boy.”

Praise for Jones

By JOEL PETERSON

FOR two years, Bendigo Gold coach Aussie Jones has spoken about building a culture and being resilient in the face of adversity. For his devastated players, those qualities have shone through from a coach they hold in the highest regard. Jones took on the young playing group with a mountain of challenges to overcome, and his players say the leadership he has shown has made them better footballers, as well as better people. The playing group was understandably disappointed upon learning of the decision, but then followed it up by going out and training as well as they had all year, according to captain Steven Stroobants. “There was a bit of shock and a bit of emotion shared when we were told, but Tim and Aussie talked through the decision with us and the boys understood it was the right thing to do,” he said. “Then we went out and trained probably as well as we have this season, which shows how resilient this

One of the biggest issues for the club is one of the most basic elements of any sporting club, having club rooms. Jones has long said the Gold is the only club in Victoria without rooms, and is forced to hold its Wednesday night training dinners on plastic tables and chairs in its changerooms. “When we told the group we said that we were making the biggest announcement in the club’s history in the changerooms because we have not got a facility,” Jones said. “We don’t have a function room and on the same night the QEO is closed due to the amount of traffic on it at the moment, so that sums it up really. “It makes the message really clear that we just don’t have the infrastructure to, firstly, compete,

group of players is.” “This footy club has been awesome for me, I’ve made probably my best mate through it and grown as a footballer and in life in general,” Stroobants said. “The work Tim Dickson and Aussie have done, I have never seen before. “It has been above and beyond anything you could expect of them, and I don’t think we would be here without that work,

and all the players recognise that.” Stroobants was named the club’s inaugural captain in 2013 after playing with South Bendigo in the Bendigo Football League. Like Jones, he took on a new challenge, and said the Gold coach had been a tremendous help to him. “I’ve got a heap of respect for Aussie, he moved here with a young family and took the challenge on

and I think he has gotten the best out of all the players which shows how good of a coach he is,” Stroobants said. After a heartbreaking loss to Northern Blues last week, Stroobants said the week’s events will help to galvanise the group for the remaining eight games in the 2014 season. “I think it will bring us together even closer as a group,” he said.

which we struggle to do each week, and secondly to bridge the gap. “Myself and Tim felt we needed to see the light, I guess you could say, in terms of being able to bridge the gap, and with the current set up it was going to be too difficult.” Jones, nor Dickson, nor the club’s players and staff can be blamed for the club’s downfall. Bendigo simply does not have the resources or facilities for a VFL team, which has been evident for many a year before the inevitable decision was made, and the Gold could not garner enough support to counteract that. AFL Victoria general Manager Grant Williams and the AFL Central Victoria commission both threw their support behind the decision on Wednesday night. The VFL is becoming a

more competitive competition with standalone AFL teams becoming the norm, and has instituted new performance standards. The Gold could not meet the requirements set out by AFL Victoria to renew its licence, one of which was having four fulltime staff employed. “We knew that becoming a standalone club after 2012 would pose significant challenges for us but we addressed them in a positive fashion and hoped that some of the key issues that have plagued the club would be resolved,” Dickson said. “We have made progress in some of these areas, but the increasing demands to be competitive in the VFL are not achievable under the current model.” With so many challenges behind him, Jones still has many to face in 2014. The first of those is how

to prepare the group for a clash with Sandringham on Sunday, and how to tackle the rest of the season. Jones said his team has shown enormous resilience, and expects them to do so again, and display one of the traits that has made him so immensely proud of his playing group. “They have been absolutely phenomenal,” Jones said. “They were extremely positive, galvanised, resilient, and ready to work their absolute backsides off to take a scalp. “We really upped the ante against Northern last week and nearly got there, and we will be going all out over the last few weeks of this season to give the club the send off we feel that it deserves.” Despite all this, for the Gold, the writing was on the wall. The wall of a home the club never had.

Culinary questions with Jody and Brent Loam of the Willow Room, Heathcote Q. What is the best way to freeze seafood? A. Seafood is of course best when its eaten fresh. If you have an excess of fresh fish that you want to save for another time you can freeze it. Rather than just throw it in the freezer, carefully wrap the fish in foil first then tightly in cling film or a zip lock back, removing all the air before sealing. This protects the fish from any freezer burn and loss of moisture when defrosting. Q. What is Bagna Cauda? A. Bagna Cauda is a dish from northern Italy that is traditionally eaten over the colder months. It basically means hot bath

or hot dip. A dipping sauce made of crushed anchovies, garlic, olive oil and butter is kept warm while raw vegetables are dipped into and eaten. It’s a great dish for a party and can be made using raw baby carrots, turnips, radish, fennel, celery, artichokes and peppers. Q. Why do you truss meat? A. Trussing of meat is a technique used mainly for roasting meats like whole chickens, beef fillet or stuffed lamb legs. It not only helps hold the stuffing in place but allows the meat to cook evenly and stay moist. For a whole chicken it keeps wings and legs tucked in so they don’t burn during roasting.

Food of all nations E

VENTS of the past week have caused lots to ponder multicultural Bendigo. Of course my pondering has turned to food. The story of food in Bendigo reflects the way our city has grown. Mum loves to tell the story that when she was first married in the late 60s gourmet cooking in suburban Golden Square amounted to putting a ring of pineapple on the ham steak. That tale probably underestimates the influence of multiculturism on Bendigo tastes in those days. From the times of the goldrush, Bendigo was a melting pot for people from all corners of the globe. The most visible and long lasting of these were the Chinese. Families with names like Jack, Loo-goon, Pan-look, Py-sing these are our friends that we don’t even see as anything other than Bendigonians. In a similar way, the Chinese food has just become part of our day-to-day life in Bendigo.

Legend has it that the Toi Shan in Mitchell Street was the first Chinese restaurant in Australia, with Bendigonians heading along with their saucepans to get takeaway. Surely, when Frank McEncroe made his first Chiko Roll he was inspired by the Chinese of Bendigo. Today, the Chinese influence continues to expand. In recent times it has been the introduction of dumplings to the wider Bendigo population. Just in the last weeks with the opening of Lyttle Asia in Lyttleton Terrace we have had Bendigo’s first Pho. If you really want to be convinced of how far we have come, spend a half hour browsing the shelves of the Asian Grocer in McCrae Street. You will not only find the most wonderful selection of fascinating ingredients but I was also blown away with how many people are shopping there. In the post war years we saw the population of Bendigo grow to include Italian and Greek migrants. Imagine what the Bendigo food scene would be today without the influence of families like the Ciancios, the Barris, the Tzourtis and the Masters. We were still making spag bol with tins of tomato soup and kookaburra packet pasta before the original Green Olive opened in Bath Lane.

WORLD FLAVOURS: Many new cuisines are now available in Bendigo.

In more recent times we have seen a huge growth in Bendigo in other nationalities, with corresponding growth in our restaurants and takeaways, especially Indian and Turkish. There is no doubt that variety in population has led to variety in our food. Hopefully this will continue – we really would love some more restaurants showcasing different cuisines.

What message? I agree wholeheartedly with Michelle goldsmith, Bendigo Weekly, June 20. We are a multicultural society. In the past we have accepted people from many cultures and this has enriched and strengthened our country, our culture and communities. Most of us can look in our family history and find ancestors of varied ethnic backgrounds; all of us are either migrants to australia or descendants of migrants and all of us, as citizens, have a responsibility to act in accordance with the laws of the land, regardless of our political, cultural, or religious backgrounds and beliefs. What message are we sending to the world at large and to potential tourists when some of us behave in ways that denigrate the beliefs, race, and right of others? also, in response to rhonda Buchanan’s letter opposing the mosque, I would ask, are we a Christian city? Do Christians have the right to deny people of other faiths the right to have a place of worship in their own locality? Jesus taught his followers to love god and to love our neighbour as ourselves. Richard Lowe, Eaglehawk

The bigger picture re “Open Letter”, Bendigo Weekly, June 20. Ms goldsmith, I am glad you found the racist behaviour offensive. However the ideals of the social and religious plurality, cultural diversity and enrichment of human rights and equality that you mentioned are great ideals but you need to check your australian history, this country was founded on racial bias and lies. If you asked any Indigenous person about their equal and human

treatment they would laugh at you because they have been fighting against the racial inequality and bigotry for more than 200 years and are still struggling against racism. Why is it that racism is only recognised when it is directed at newcomers? Why are laws quicker to be changed when the newcomers complain? How much does it take for the Indigenous to be recognised and accepted in their own country? Mrs Smith, non-Indigenous person

Building Bendigo I Have been very disappointed in the level of debate regarding the application, and in my view rightful approval, for planning permission for a mosque in Bendigo. The fear-mongering that has been going on is disgusting, the degrading comments and behaviours are simply shameful. But it was Letters in the Bendigo Weekly June 26 that really has got me going. Your correspondent says she is a Christian and claims that Bendigo is a “Christian city.” Why is it that the behaviour of so many people who profess to be Christian seem to be so unChrist-like? Since when have being exclusive and unwelcoming been Christ’s values? What happened to “love one another…” and “do unto others…”? and as to Bendigo being a Christian city, does stealing land and decimating the Dja Dja Warrung people, persecuting Chinese people who came along with the other “invaders” in the goldrush, perpetuating child abuse and now discriminating against Muslims make it so? Or is it just the sheer weight of numbers built falsely because of the White australia Policy

and/or birth control bans? None of those holds any weight with me. I believe that Bendigo needs to aspire to being a human city where people are valued for their efforts in building a harmonious and sustainable community. a city where we support one another, welcome and value the unique contributions of those who look to join us and, above all, where our daily actions demonstrate equality, respect and, dare I say, love. We are all just fragile humans sharing this town for a very brief time; I think it’s time we dumped the labels and endeavoured be our best selves in thought, word and deed. Antoinette Danaher, Bendigo

Take the challenge for dry July I aM writing to encourage our entire community to support a cause dear to my heart – Dry July. Dry July is a fundraiser that challenges you to go booze-free for a month to support adults living with cancer. Dry July improves the wellbeing of adult cancer patients by providing funds to create better services and environments for them and their families. In 2009 I battled cancer and underwent numerous surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy. From this experience and having a mate who was also battling cancer, I felt it was time I did my bit. Hence, I joined the Dry July challenge. Originally I set a target to raise $10,000. However, it was evident to me just how important this cause was when the entire Boort community got behind me, running sausage sizzles, raffles, dinner and an auction night, along with many generous donations contributed to an

astonishing final figure of $40,125. I was taken aback by the generosity of everyone, and I was proud. Proud of what such a small community can achieve when they set their minds to it. This money not only went towards brightening up the oncology unit at Bendigo Health but the hospice unit as well. If we can do this, the potential for the region is huge. This year Bendigo Health is hoping to raise the funds to refurbish the six Nolan Street Cancer accommodation units where patients stay when undergoing treatment. I encourage every community’s favourite larrikin or drinker to have a crack at no drinks for July. Involve your mates, your clubs and your town to get behind your effort. Then take a journey that in my experience you will never forget. I have learnt along this journey that no matter who you are, someone in your life has been affected by cancer. So, I challenge you to help make a difference and sign up to support Bendigo Health this Dry July. www.dryjuly.com Neil Beattie, Boort

Greater Bendigo council mayor. OUr community has a long and proud history of embracing people of all races and religions dating back to the goldrush days. We welcome people from across the globe with our community including people from India, Philippines, China, germany, Netherlands, Thailand, South africa, Myanmar, Italy, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, United States … the list goes on. and we welcome Christians, Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims and support their right to establish places of worship here. The great Stupa being built on Bendigo’s outskirts is an excellent example of this and I am sure that once the dust has settled, the mosque at east Bendigo will also grow to symbolise our community’s tolerance and support for multiculturalism. I am absolutely convinced that council made the right decision in approving the planning permit application for our city’s first mosque. We did so based on planning grounds as is required under the Planning and environment act. I am not, however, naive enough to think that everyone supports the decision we made. There are residents who have

raised concerns about planning matters and a perceived lack of consultation. Last Wednesday’s council meeting demonstrated how difficult it would have been to have a productive consultation meeting, where all views could be heard, in advance of the council decision being made. It should also be noted that the process of advertising the application and seeking submissions is consultation and that two of our councillors door knocked residents in the vicinity to get people’s views. There is also a small but vocal group who would likely oppose a mosque being built anywhere in Bendigo. In my experience, attitudes like this come from a fear of the unknown. regretfully it appears that groups from outside Bendigo are attempting to use this fear to propagate hate. To those groups, I say we are a free and fair people. No one has the right to deny any person of any religion a place to worship based on prejudice. as mayor, I welcome people from all backgrounds and religions because they strengthen our community and help to make greater Bendigo an even better place.

editorial

No future for footy THE future was never clear for the Bendigo Football Club. However difficult it was to make, this week’s decision from the Bendigo Gold is the right one. For 17 years the club has battled to establish itself as a presence within the Bendigo sporting community, stretching right back to the days of the Diggers. In that time there has been no great success, and wins have been few and far between outside of the Essendon-aligned years. There were plans for a double storey building at the QEO with poker machines and a gaming area that would provide the club with an income stream that the club battled for years to find. Those plans, like so many others, never came to fruition. However unsuccessful on-field the Diggers and Gold proved, it may have been those Essendonaligned years that spelled the club’s ultimate demise. Despite the club having a presence in Bendigo, the majority of the talent during the Bombers years was from Melbourne or on Essendon’s VFL list. The Bendigo Bombers, as they were then known, had little communication with the Bendigo

Football League clubs from whom they drew players, and were seen by most to have little respect for the BFL competition as a whole. Essendon’s vision was to create a corridor from Melbourne to Mildura that the Bombers could

call their own, with Bendigo seen as a central part of that. Then, when the Bombers abandoned the alignment to create their own standalone side, the Bendigo Football Club was left with nothing. Essendon left no legacy, no help, and next to no chance for the Bendigo Football Club to survive on its own two feet.

Coach Aussie Jones has been an outstanding ambassador for his club, and you can ask any of his players who all have the utmost respect for him. He made the leap of faith to move his young family from Melbourne to take on a job of coaching a side that had no players of its own at that stage, and no club rooms or facilities. Chairman Tim Dickson has also poured his heart and soul into the club, as have club officials, volunteers and of course, the players, who have toiled without a win in one and a half years. There has always been knockers of VFL football in Bendigo and those who have championed it. But overwhelmingly, there are those who did not care about, follow, or support the club in any stage of its existence. Bendigo does not have the facilities or resources for a VFL team, and most do not possess the desire for one either. And when the final siren blows on Friday, August 22 after the Gold’s final game against Collingwood, the club’s future will finally become clear. There will not be one.

AFTER this week’s disappointing news that the Bendigo Gold will hand back its licence to the VFL at the end of this season, now more than ever is the time for Bendigo to get behind another elite local sporting team – namely the Bendigo Spirit. The dual national champions have received a substantial tax bill dating back some years, with the potential to wipe out any financial gains the club has made in recent times. The Spirit has enjoyed some of the largest home crowds of any club in the Women’s National Basketball League as local basketball fans vote with their feet to get behind the city’s most elite sports team. Cooking Jamie style I

while I was prepping the food, and then another one as I mixed it all in. When it came to the wine, I thought it seemed an awful lot, so reduced it to half a bottle. This was going so well, and I thought ahead to that evening’s meal while the stew bubbled. A simple lamb steak, green beans and potatoes was the plan, and no help needed from Jamie. I prepped the vegies and had another beer. This cooking lark is great fun. I then watched a film, days off in winter are great, and had a beer or two.

Come 6.30pm and Mrs K’s arrival was looming, went for a beer to help me cook and they were all gone. Once again I steered clear of the Chat Noir and went for a taste of the wine I’d used for the stew. Within half an hour the bottle was empty, the steaks were ready, and Mrs K was home. “You’re happy and talkative,” Mrs K said with some suspicion. I think I am always like that, but obviously this was a different kind of happy. At this point I must let you know we have a new pug. Pug MkII is an old boy, and

dear dotty... Dear Dotty This windy weather is giving me nothing but trouble. Tied in with the wind I have real trouble keeping on my feet. Scarlett, Heathcote.

Steve makes good use of a day in the kitchen BLAME Jamie Oliver. I had a day off last week and decided to rustle up a few meals to ease the late night rush around. Jamie brought out a book Ministry of Food some years ago, the long-suffering Mrs Kendall has a copy in the kitchen in the hope I will cook a few things now and then. The aim of the book is to show anyone can cook from scratch with minor fuss. This suits me down to the ground, and I set about a winter-warming chicken stew from the book. I imagined it would last at least a couple of nights, and set to with knife and chopping board. The problem with this stew was its fluid content. “Add a glug of white wine,” Jamie wrote. When I looked at the recipe properly, his glug is 500ml. That’s two-thirds of a bottle. I looked at Mrs K’s stash of grog and was not game to pour in the Chat Noir chardonnay she’s partial to, but I did find another bottle matching the description. I had a couple of beers

was a rescue from an unknown fate. He’s conned us into keeping him indoors, and he had been farting and snoring for most of the afternoon while I was slaving away in the kitchen. Come bedtime, Mrs K was convinced I needed to sleep in a different room from her, so we spent the night at opposite ends of the house, with the pug somewhere in the middle. Apparently I snored, the pug snored and farted, and Mrs K still had to use earplugs despite being two rooms and doors away. Bloody Jamie Oliver. Twitter@stevekendall1

Frankly Scarlett, I don’t give a damn. Sorry Scarlett, I had to make reference to my favourite film Gone With the Wind. Rhett Butler says that to Scarlett O’Hara at the end of the film and it had millions of filmgoers weeping and excited as the uppity Scarlett was finally given her just desserts. Your name reminded me of it, and I had to take my chance. Right, to the problem at hand. Actually, I don’t give a damn. Toughen up girl. In the film Scarlett lost husbands, a father and her beloved home Tara. If she can cope surely you can find a little bit of Atlanta pluck and ride the storm. Really. Dear Dotty I am having trouble with my wife. She is spoilt and demanding and does not show me respect. I think she loves me though. Rhett, Eaglehawk. Dear Rhett Oh, fiddle de dee.

Dear Dotty This storm has really caused me a problem, with the high winds and rain I felt I have been in a typhoon or something. The only plus is things seem a lot more colourful nowadays. I have found some new friends and am setting off on a trip with them and my dog. Trouble is, I would like to go home some day, and I am not sure I know how. Dorothy and Toto. Dear Dorothy The best advice I can give is follow the yellow brick road. Editor’s note – We think Dotty has been watching too many movies from the 1930s. Normal service resumes next week. Music in harmony F

IJIAN born multi instrumentalist Jay Hoad is bringing his show to the Golden Vine. He’s been making his way around the country with this one-man-band extravaganza, launching two new albums Home Is Where The Heart Is and Earth Music for Yoga, Massage and Healing. It’s already been a big year for Hoad who kicked the year off in style with performances at the Saarang World Cultural Festival in Chennai, India, followed by the Port Fairy Folk Festival in Victoria. Hoad’s performance schedule over the past eight years has seen him perform at some of the world’s most prestigious live music venues and music festivals throughout the Caribbean, Central and North America, Canada, Southeast Asia, Fiji, India, and Australia. The high energy show

sees Jay sitting in a cockpit of instruments including didgeridoo, dulcimer, dulsitar, cigar box guitar, wine box bass, weissenborn lap steel, harmonica, ocarina, djembe, percussion, loops, voice and then some. Lungs, hands and feet work in harmony as Jay fuses all genres of music, creating a sound that’s difficult to believe comes from just one person. “I really can’t wait to get back to Victoria as I absolutely love that part of the world,” Hoad said. “And of course, I’m super excited to be touring with a new album and pretty much a whole new set and sound. “I think this album is by far the best work I have done to date, and coming from me that’s a big call as I am super critical of my own work.” Jay Hoad will be performing at the Golden Vine Hotel on Friday, July 18.

“We both attended La Trobe here in Bendigo and met through a mutual friend,” Nanks said. “We later discovered the other played an instrument and started casually playing music together sometime in 2012. “We were covering songs we both enjoyed and chose to do so

simply for the fun of it.” This continued as those covers progressed to writing their own songs. “A few friends seemed to approve; so we then moved from the bedroom to the Bendigonian music scene,” McPherson said. “The music we’ve written has

been influenced by The Strokes, The Arctic Monkeys, The Vines, The Killers and Death Cab For Cutie.” The debut EP launch is on Saturday at The Music Man, Bendigo on Hargreaves Street with special guests Sparrow and The Spark, Filthy Hacks and more. On the door it’s $5 entry or $10 with EP.

HE Eucy Maids, established earlier this year, provide a cleaning service for domestic and commercial properties. A unique aspect of their cleaning is the use of eucalyptus products that are manufactured locally. Gaylia owned and operated a cafe for 25 years where she faithfully used eucalyptus oil products. “They were fantastic for cleaning scruffy floors and all of the surfaces so I have real faith in the product,” she said. Gaylia and Jill established The eucy Maids cleaning service based on a demand for reliability and a high level of customer service.

“We use products from The Australian Eucalyptus Oil Company and find they are just perfect for cleaning,” Gaylia said. “I actually sold the products from the cafe for years to travellers and tourists and they always came back to buy more.” “All our eucy products are biodegradable, natural and environmentally friendly and are available to all our clients.” The eucy Maids do all general cleaning as well as windows, ceiling fans, ovens and light fittings – all those tricky, messy jobs we like to avoid. The eucy Maids service all areas from Bendigo to Inglewood. Phone Gaylia: 0459 520 115 or Jill: 0467 173 767. The eucy Maids – preferred for a reason.

Crunch time T

HE Ballarat Wildlife Park is offering a great deal to get the kids out and about with a half price discount these school holidays. That’s a full day of activities from only $8 per child. Come and see their new crocodile facility featuring a ‘billabong’ themed water hole with a new resident, a massive fivemetre crocodile called Crunch. A large underwater viewing area lets visitors view the crocodile swimming and resting. And on certain days the park will have spectacular feedings and shows to educate visitors on these amazing animals. The other park attractions are also in full swing including feeding the roaming

kangaroos, or patting the koala, wombats and snakes. Enjoy the free guided tour at 11am daily and the animal shows throughout the afternoon. If you want to take the experience one step further, book a personal wildlife experience with a koala, wombat or snake. School supplies to help

T takes more than a few boxes of stationary and piles of books to make a school – but it all helps. Twenty six students from Victory Christian College in Strathdale left for Vanuatu yesterday after a busy term thanks to the efforts of Year 11 student, Grace Wallace and her fellow students. “I was given a box of curtain scraps and was wanting to do something

crafty to assist a stationary drive organised by Year 5/6 students,” Grace said. “One thing led to another and before long I was making pencil cases for students not so fortunate.” “Around the same time the Year 7/8 students had started a book drive and it wasn’t long before the whole school community got behind the book and stationary drive for the

Victory School of Hope, just outside Port Vila,” teacher Karen Otten said. “This trip will provide students with an ideal opportunity to connect with communities both here and abroad with students taking across the books and stationery they’ve collected personally,” Karen said. Students will be back in time for Term 3 all the richer for the experience.

If so, registered tax agent and fully accredited CPA member Bjoern Giller from Bjoern’s Accounting Services can help offering practical advice seven days a week for all matters of taxation advice and planning. He’ll even come to your business or home, after hours if necessary to help get your affairs in order. “As there are various methods of depreciating your investment assets it is important to choose the right one based on your current and future anticipated circumstances. “Another area that is often overlooked is the ‘special building write-off’ or ‘bricks and mortar depreciation’ as I call it which can be used to depreciate your asset for up to 40 years in certain circumstances.” Bjoern’s area of expertise is not only limited to negatively-geared rental properties, he is also experienced with taxation requirements for companies, partnerships, trusts and self managed superannuation funds. “Salary packaging is also an area that can save employees considerable tax dollars in many legitimate ways,” Bjoern said. For help with these or any other taxation matters please phone Bjoern’s Accounting Services on 5446 2697 or email bjoern.giller@gmail.com

I have a sweet, gentle nature although I like to bounce with excitement. I will be a great friend for a family with older teenage kids or individual who likes to get outside and have some fun. Obedience training is a must and will be quite enjoyable. Please come and see me.

FFemale, l 1 year ((approx)

This young lady is sweet as pie. She is very social and affectionate. She loves to have a chat with you and would be quite content just sitting on your knee watching TV. She will be desexed and microchipped when she is adopted.

snooker back in city By JOEL PETERSON

The world’s best snooker players return to Bendigo next week for the fourth running of the Australian Goldfields Snooker Open at the Bendigo Stadium. One of 10 world-rankingpoints tournaments, the Goldfields Open will see players fresh off other international tournaments, including this week’s Wuxi Classic in China. Australian and 2013 runnerup Neil Robertson headlines the field, that includes 13 of the top 20 money winners to date in 2014. Defending champion Marco Fu will not be making the trip down under, but Robertson will be joined by 2011 winner Stuart Bingham and 2012 champion and world number five Barry hawkins in the field. Robertson takes on the winner of Andrew higginson and Australian wildcard Matthew Bolton in his opener, with Bingham drawn to face Scott Donaldson and hawkins to take on Peter ebdon. World number six Judd Trump and seventh-ranked Shaun Murphy will also provide stiff opposition, with Trump opening his campaign against Rory McLeod and Shaun Murphy to take on young gun Jack Likowski.

Tournament director Greg hooton said the field of 34 entrants into the tournament, battling for the $500,000 in prizemoney, was of extremely high quality. “We have again been able to get great field to Bendigo, the players really enjoy coming here and that shows in the amount of top players we have once again attracted to this event,” he said. “When we started coming here, Bendigo was one of four events of its kind. That number has since grown to 10, and Bendigo has been front and centre in that growth.” hooton said with such an even field, picking a likely winner was no easy task. “It’s interesting over the last few years I feel the field has probably evened up a bit,” he said. “In terms of the players, anyone on their day can win. So, this year Neil is certainly one of the frontrunners but you have still the likes of Judd Trump, Mark Allen and the traditional guys like Mark higgins and Barry hawkins who are always around the mark. “I think the whole field on their day can win, which from my perspective is certainly fantastic and makes for a really exciting tournament.” The Australian Goldfields

Friday, July 4, before the final is held from 2pm next Sunday. Tickets are available from the Bendigo Stadium on 5440 6200 or www.bendigostadium.com.au.

“We are in a fortunate position in that most of our players have shown great commitment to sign on for the next two years, and we have a stable playing group. “We now have a full roster well before the season starts and Bernie (harrower) has put this together within his playing budget.” Bickley also expressed his disappointment about the Bendigo Gold’s decision not to renew its licence for the 2015 VFL season, saying it points to a worrying trend in elite sport in the region. “It is very sad for the players, members, loyal sponsors, in fact everyone associated with the club, that the Gold will fold,” Bickley said. “What is of greater concern however, is at present there are two elite sports teams based in Bendigo, and next year there will be only one. “The Bendigo Bank Spirit, and Bendigo Gold are playing in elite competitions, bringing the highest level of competition to Bendigo and promoting the Bendigo brand across Australia. “If we want to continue to see elite competition based in Bendigo, we must support our Bendigo teams.” 4PK Page 15

Touchdown in Bendigo BENDIGO landed yet another major sports event last week, with the announcement that Tom Flood Sports Centre will hold the 2014 Gridiron Victoria Vic Bowl on August 30. The Vic Bowl decides the division one and two champions of the Gridiron Victoria season, with both games to be played on the day. This year is Vic Bowl’s 30th anniversary season of American Football in Victoria and is expected to attract hundreds of enthusiasts to Bendigo. GV president Sam Weller said the Tom Flood Sports Centre is home to the Bendigo Dragons Gridiron Club, who in only their second season are currently in playoff contention in division one. “The people of Bendigo have really embraced our sport, in particular the Dragons and we are delighted to be bringing our biggest day of the season here,” Weller said. “Tom Flood is one of the best facilities in the state for Gridiron, they get a bumper crowd that is always lively and we expect this to be our biggest and best Vic Bowl yet.”

Bendigo Dragons president David Barker said the Dragons set out from the club’s infancy to ensure that Bendigo was a significant player within the gridiron community. “Securing the Vic Bowl here at Tom Flood is certainly a huge step forward for the city and the sport, as the Bendigo region adds another marquee event to its fast growing sporting portfolio,” he said. “The work the City of Greater Bendigo has done to keep Tom Flood Sports Centre in the best condition possible has been fantastic, and come August 30 the facility will be on show during Gridiron Victoria’s biggest day of the year. “Bendigo is fast becoming a Gridiron mecca for both Victoria and Australia and will be sure to not disappoint when the Vic Bowl kicks off.” The Dragons will turn their attention to their game against Northern Raiders this weekend. The clash kicks off at 10.30am on Sunday at Footscray’s Henry Turner Reserve.

Bendigo wins top spots

FC Bendigo in top form

BENDIGO teams took out both division one and division two matches at this week’s Balloon Football competition at the Bendigo Stadium. Six Balloon Football League teams from across Victoria gathered in Bendigo on Tuesday to play in the state-wide competition. Teams from North West and Southern Metropolitan Melbourne travelled to Bendigo to take on regional outfits. The game started 16 years ago, and allows people with a disability to enjoy playing competitive sport. The games are played on an indoor basketball court with players using either powered or

manual wheelchairs, and there are more than 100 participants statewide. “This state-wide competi-

tion is a fantastic opportunity for balloon football players to challenge teams from across Victoria, and this is the first time that a

statewide BFL event has been held in Bendigo,” Scope chief executive officer Jennifer Fitzgerald said. Students from Sports Education Development Australia and Nazareth College were on hand to support players on court, umpire and score the games.

IN three short weeks, FC Bendigo has risen from competition minnow to potential giant killer, such has been the club’s glittering recent form. At the start of June the club stood second last on the NPL1 table, with only two wins and a draw to its name, due to a string of second-half fadeouts. In the past three weeks, the club has staged a remarkable turnaround recording three straight wins, three straight clean sheets, and is now one game out of seventh place on the ladder. A fourth successive triumph will be anything but easy, with round 13 opponent Avondale Heights having won its past 11 games and sitting nine points clear atop the NPL1 table. The two sides met in round one, a match that resulted in Bendigo frittering away several chances while Avondale capitalised on it, to run out 3-2 winners. FC Bendigo coach Steve Martin’s confidence in his side has never wavered throughout the season despite the early results, and the first-year boss said this week he is sure his young squad will take it up to the competition’s best. “We’re certainly not going to back down from the challenge, he said. “We have shown over the past three weeks that when we play our best football we are more than capable, and we will absolutely need to bring that this week.” Bendigo’s most recent win came over Martin’s former side in Sunshine George Cross, who the 35-year-old

left to coach his home town team. Despite it being Bendigo’s first win against a top-four opponent, Martin said it was not the best performance they had shown this season. “I’d have to say it wasn’t, to be perfectly honest. I say that because I think we have had better performances in regards to the way we have played and moved the ball,” he said. “Defensively it was another good showing and we were working as a unit but the second half was certainly not one of our more polished performances. “In terms of being able to get a result when we don’t play at our best, it was definitely a positive.” Martin said both clubs have momentum, but was confident his club could get a result if it plays to its potential, despite being without George Slefendorfas for a second week due to suspension. “I think it is all about taking opportunities. We made some unforced errors and were probably our own worst enemy in the first game of the season where we let them back in,” Martin said. “Having an understanding of how they play, if we can now do some homework and work on certain ways that they play then we can counteract that. “In that first game we felt that they probably only had five or six opportunities and converted three of them, and we have matured as a group since then. “They have momentum but so do we, and we want to stop their run. If we play the way we have been playing the last three weeks there is every opportunity to do that.”

Spirit in tax horror By JOEL PETERSON

THE financial gains the Bendigo Bank Spirit made over the club’s two WNBL championship-winning seasons have been effectively wiped out. The club has been hit with a tax assessment bill dating back to the club’s foundation years, putting the club back to square one. “We have just come through two premiership seasons, and we are now hit with a significant tax

Gridiron touchdown

This pretty much wipes out the gains we made assessment bill relating to the foundation years of the club,” Spirit chairman Greg Bickley said. “This pretty much wipes out the gains we made in the last two years. “Finances are very tight and it will be a challenge without significant ongoing community and stakeholder support. “We have a board that is committed to ensure that we not only survive as a club, but that we continue to provide sound management. Continued Page 33
