BENDIGO Bank chairman Robert Johanson has used this week’s 20th anniversary of the former building society becoming a bank to reflect on the organisation’s increasing importance to the local region. Mr Johanson said while this week’s anniversary marked the change from a building society to a

bank, the celebration was also about something much bigger. “Our bank has evolved considerably in the past 20 years, the most significant being the merger between Bendigo Bank and Adelaide Bank in 2007,” he said. During an extensive and broad-

reaching interview, Mr Johanson described the excitement and anticipation surrounding one of Australia’s oldest financial institutions becoming a bank 20 years ago as “a big deal”. “It was the result of a series of decisions made after the Pyramid Building Society went broke. That

really irreparably damaged, we felt, the building society brand, and it showed that the regulatory structures for building societies were hopeless,” he said. Mr Johanson said the Bendigo became a bank because it felt that was what was needed to get the right

structure for the future. Twenty years ago, the former Bendigo Building Society employed about 700 staff. Today the bank employs more than 7000. In 1995, the company earned about $10m after tax. This year it reported an after tax statutory profit of $227.3 million for the six months ending 31 December 2014. Continued Page 5

The Weekly look at the local real estate market

The right time to buy FOR anyone wondering when is the right time to buy real estate – the answer is likely now. That’s the view of Tweed Sutherland First National’s Darryn O’Keefe, who says now is the best time in a number of years (for those who are in a position to do so) to purchase properties – both owner occupy and investment. Mr O’Keefe said with the interest rates hovering between four and five per cent, most investment properties would be neutrally geared or very close to it. “The vacancy rate has been consistently (within our firm) approximately 1.5 per cent for the past 18 months, Melbourne properties are becoming out of reach for the average household in Melbourne,” he said. “There will be an influx of out of town investors in the short term recognising Bendigo is still a vibrant, excellent investment provincial city, within commuting distance to Melbourne – with character and charm that is highly sought after by most,” he said. “The local market needs to recognise this to capitalise on our market prior to the next cycle of anticipated price rises – which usually occurs a few months after Melbourne and Sydney’s bullish market. “ Mr O’Keefe said the diverse style of homes and affordability are Bendigo’s strengths, and attractions such as the Ulumbarra Theatre and new Bendigo hospital are highlighting Bendigo for consistent future growth. He says his firm is also seeing retirees gravitate to Bendigo from outlying areas – attracted by the benefits, facilities and affordability of Bendigo. NEW dwelling approvals strengthened during May and remain at high levels, with the

Bendigo Advertiser 19.2%

Housing Industry Association stating total new dwelling approvals rose by 2.4 per cent to 19,414 in seasonally-adjusted terms, compared with 18,964 in April. Senior economist Shane Garrett said a rebound in multiunit approvals saw a 15.1 per cent increase occurring during May while detached house approvals fell by 8.5 per cent during the month. 218,442 approvals were recorded in the year to May, a new record for approvals over any 12-month period since records began in 1983. Mr Garrett says the onus is very much on policymakers to rectify the bottlenecks in the planning system, redress the excessive fees and charges on new AUCTION TIME: 46 Axedale-Goornong Road.

During May 2015, seasonally-adjusted new dwelling approvals saw the strongest increase in Victoria (+11.0 per cent), followed by New South Wales (+8.8 per cent) and Queensland (+3.6 per cent).

LOCAL builders have taken out the top honours at last week’s North West Master Builders Regional Building Awards, held at All Seasons Quality Resort Bendigo. VR Builders was named Residential Builder of the Year (North West) for its work on a private, modern, architecturallydetailed home in Barkers Creek, with MBA chief executive officer Radley de Silva applauding the home for its ambitious attention to details, including a deft combination of design detail and responsible energy efficiency. Other winners included: Jason Wescott, Cavalier Homes, Bendigo Urban Investments, Metricon Homes, JG King Homes, Dennis Family Homes, Todd Newman Builders, New Select Homes, Fairbrother Pty Ltd, and KGB Constructions. ELDERS Bendigo has a magnificent riverfront villa on 21.3 acres at Axedale to auction tomorrow, Saturday, July 4 from 1pm.

Perched high on the banks of the Campaspe River at 46 Axedale-Goornong Road, the double storey home offers up to five bedrooms, including two ensuites, a third bathroom, stunning living areas, in-ground pool, landscaped gardens and extensive shedding, as well as a two megalitre water right and a 300-vine vineyard. Elders also has a quiet and very private 20 acre allotment at Lot 2, Fitzgibbon Road, Strathfieldsaye to auction from 10am tomorrow, on site. This property has a dam, power at the boundary, and offers the chance to build a dream home on a fully fenced allotment, just 20 minutes from the heart of Bendigo. A rare inner city allotment of approximately 270 square metres will go under the hammer tomorrow, Saturday, July 4, at noon. Listed with Dungey Carter Ketterer, the property at 61 Little Breen Street is on the city fringe and has a Commercial 2 zoning.

When it comes to property, four out of five buyers rate the Bendigo Weekly as more important to their search than any other paper in the local market.

Centre has funds plan

By CHRISTINE McGINN

A CROWD-FUNDING campaign to finance the Discovery Centre’s operational costs and long-term future has gone live. The Discovery Science and Technology Centre launched its Save Discovery campaign today to raise $30,000 in 30 days. Acting manager Kate Barnard said contributors would receive a range of rewards for their donations. “It sounds like a lot of money, but if every person who signed the Save Discovery petition were to donate just $10, we will easily reach our goal,” she said. “I would like to call on all the wonderful people who have

been so supportive of Discovery over the past few turbulent weeks to get behind this campaign and send a message loud and clear, that a facility offering science education is an absolute must for Bendigo’s children.” The centre has only raised about 44 per cent of its $200,000 target to ensure it can see the next financial year out. With less than two weeks to raise the $200,000 in operating costs before the Committee of Management takes control from Bendigo Trust, the deadline is tight. The City of Greater Bendigo has given $40,000 while La Trobe University gave $30,000 this calendar year to help prop up the

centre. The state government has already given its share of $70,000 in funding to the centre this year. Champions IGA owner Brendan Goddard donated $35,000 over the next two years

was quietly confident the centre would survive at least another year. “I believe we will be working beyond July 12. We are still lining up the ducks but they are com-

ing together quite nicely and we are relatively comfortable we will continue for at least another year but we are looking at the longterm future,” she said. “We are looking at the management of the centre, partnerships, sponsors and how we can keep their interest continuing and

feed that into the strategic plan and looking at the longevity of the building lease.” Dr Legge said the board met last night to finalise its members and would begin working on the long-term strategy for the centre. “Some big players have come on board to help Discovery, which has been wonderful,” she said. “However, in order to further prove to the state government that the community wants this science education facility to remain in Bendigo we need to show that, at an individual level we are willing to dig a little deeper, which is why we are launching a crowd-funding campaign today.” Locals can donate at www. chuffed.org/project/save‐discovery

MOSQUE DELAY DISAPPOINTS THE City of Greater Bendigo is disappointed objectors to the mosque made a claim of bias against VCAT’s president and deputy president. Planning and Development director Prue Mansfield said it threatened to delay a decision on the proposed development. “This is a matter for VCAT and the objectors to resolve. However it has the potential to further delay a decision on the mosque and that it very disappointing given the number of delays that have already occurred,” she said. “The issue is of considerable interest to our community and the city is keen to have it dealt with expediently.”

BUSHMASTERS GO DUTCH TWELVE new Bendigo-made Bushmasters have gone into production to be sent to the Netherlands. The Dutch ministry of defence bought 86 Bushmasters between 2006 and 2009, and this new order will be delivered by mid-2016. Thales Australia chief executive officer Chris Jenkins said the Bushmaster has proven itself on operations with the Dutch military in Afghanistan, and was a vital component of their Light Brigade. The troop carrier variants will be fitted with additional composite armour, remote weapon stations, and Thales’ market-leading SOTAS intercom system. Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said it was a great tick of approval for local manufacturing.

Bendigo Weekly reaches a milestone THE Bendigo Weekly celebrates its 18th birthday this week. Managing editor Peter Kennedy paid tribute to the dedicated team that worked together to produce Bendigo’s most popular and most read newspaper each week, and to all those who have worked on the paper since its inception on July 4, 1997.

“Our paper was founded on the vision and drive of three men in particular – Keith Sutherland, Steve Carter and especially Daryl McClure, and although Daryl sadly passed away earlier this year, his belief in the Weekly and what it could do for the community lives on,” he said. Mr Kennedy said the Week-

ly was poised to enter an exciting new chapter in its rich history in coming months and the company and its board were extremely optimistic for the paper’s future. “Each week our paper finds its way into more than 38,000 homes across Greater Bendigo and the surrounding districts… that’s something

MARG ALLAN RESIGNS

we are incredibly proud of and something we will never take for granted,” he said. “The Weekly was first set up to serve the local community, and it’s something we have been privileged to be able to do now for 923 editions, and something we plan to do, even better, in the years ahead.”

CITY of Greater Bendigo organisation support director Marg Allan has resigned. Ms Allan has been with council 14 years and has chosen to leave the organisation to pursue personal interests. She joined the organisation in 2001 as the strategy manager before taking up her current role in 2008. Ms Allan has also served on the Bendigo Stadium Finance Committee and the board of the Goldfields Library Corporation. Ms Allan’s last day with the city will be Friday, July 31.

Amicus bids to close gap Disability service plan looks to fix housing shortfall

By CHRISTINE McGINN

A LEADING disability service provider has pipe dreams to build and develop affordable housing. Amicus Inc wants to transform its North Bendigo site into housing to help address the unmet local demand for people with a disability. Executive officer Ann-Marie Davis said there was a limited range of housing options available to people with disabilities. “We have the five-acre site that we are looking to redevelop to create some opportunities but it won’t meet the total need. It is one solution that can help meet it,” she said. “We know a home is about

more than just a house so what we want to do is to develop that site to include housing that is accessible and affordable for people with a disability. “Also some social housing for other members of our community who find it difficult in the private rental market and just people who want to build a home. We want to want sure that it’s more than just a neighbourhood, it’s a community.” Ms Davis said the organisation was discussing with Haven; Home, Safe the feasibility of developing the site for housing.

“When the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is implemented fully across Australia, there will be 122,000 Australians with an

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD: Robert Johanson is optimistic. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN “There are a lot of threats or ways this could go wrong but it also has a fantastic opportunity,” he said. “The internet opens up the world but it also opens up the possibility that distance matters less. “The idea of being anchored in a community that you can actually get your arms around like Bendigo is something that is really important.” Mr Johanson also said Bendigo Bank is looking to do a lot more with La Trobe University. “It’s not just becoming a bank that’s important. It’s what possibilities for growth, for expansion and for feeding into other communities that brings, and that’s the really important stuff,” he said. Mr Johanson is also openly candid, and frank,

about the controversy surrounding the closure of a bank account operated by a group raising funds to fight the planned establishment of a mosque in East Bendigo. “You cannot use your connection with us as though we’re endorsing you,” he said. “We were not telling them what they should think or not think, but what we were saying was our values, we have our own views on what an enlightened and prosperous community is…. It’s one that’s diverse, tolerant, that will accept all sorts of opinions… that’s where we want to be.” Mr Johanson defended the bank’s actions, saying it was not about telling anyone what to think, but also don’t recruit the bank into your opinions.

The recent announcement of a federal government grant to satisfy the required funding for a major overhaul of the Bendigo airport was welcome news for Bendigo, Mr Johanson said, adding he hoped the bank could find ways to help nurture businesses wanting to be part of the local aviation economy. Mr Johanson is an optimist when it comes to the bank’s future, and that of the city in which Australia’s fifth largest retail bank has its headquarters. “I hope the bank can continue to contribute to the development of a flourishing, diverse, modern, outward looking and enlightened community,” he said. “I reckon if we persist, on that simple mission that we have, then we’ll do okay.”

SHORTLISTED for this year’s Victorian Indigenous Art Awards, Troy Firebrace followed an intriguing pathway to find success. When he was at Shepparton High School, Troy had heaps of fun in class drawing designs that he would use as the basis of his tattoos. “The tattoos are all over my body and my mum wasn’t at all impressed,” Troy said. From designing tattoos he went on to doing designs for his skateboards. From school Troy found a job at Beaurepaires changing tyres. “I changed tyres for two years, and one day my workmate Craig took me aside and had a yarn with me,” he said. “Craig had been changing tyres for 16 years, he had a mullet, a wife and kids and he said to me ‘listen mate, do you want to keep doing this for the rest of your life?’ I didn’t know what direction to go in and Craig just said ‘do something you enjoy, something you like.’ He had a point.” Troy decided he loved drawing and he loved kids. The first step was to enrol in Sport and Recreation at Shepparton TAFE which in turn enabled him to transfer over to La Trobe University in Bendigo. He is in the second year of a Bachelor of Education and Design and nicely set up to combine the things he

loves – teaching and art. Now 23, Troy, a Yorta Yorta man, takes his inspiration from his people. “As a young boy I can remember going fishing and listening to my uncle telling stories around the campsite by the river,” he said. “The stories stayed with me. I associate them with the sparks of the camp fire, the stars in the sky.” Troy said he was excited by the progress he has been making. The painting which was shortlisted for the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards is called A Galaxy Swirls. The work he has on display for Naidoc Week has similar themes which reflect an Aboriginal way of story telling. “Some of these paintings interpret life as particles flying through space and each particle is a story in itself,” he said. Troy, who is represented by Kaiela Gallery in Shepparton, said he appreciates their support as well as the help he has received from family, friends, and teachers, and of course Craig. “Everyone needs a Craig in their life,” he said. This year’s Knuldoorong Naidoc Art Exhibition will run until July 11. It is held at the MacGilivray Hall, McCrae Street. For more information call 0418 579 501. Mr Johanson said the bank’s importance to Bendigo was not just the result of increasing its size, but also its importance as in institution in the city and in the region, as an employer of people, and as a provider of wealth. “But hopefully also as an institution that instigates change that brings to this place a really modern international looking broadly based enterprise that connects lots of communities and lots of customers. I think we’re also important in those sorts of ways,” he said. He maintains the simple philosophy widely espoused by former managing director Rob Hunt that if the bank’s customers do well and if their communities flourish, then so too will the Bendigo. Asked about the bank’s increasingly important role as a good corporate citizen, he acknowledges his company’s “profound responsibility” in this area. “It’s not just giving money that’s important, it’s how we use that to nurture other sets of relationships. It’s not just a coincidence that we give money to football and netball clubs…. They are part of the social glue of these communities.” Mr Johanson said Bendigo the city is a bit like Bendigo the bank.

part of a working party to address the housing issue. “Local, state and federal government have a significant role to play and we need to make sure when these levels of government come together, we are providing the housing people with a disability and their families require,” she said. “I believe we have the people and the organisations that can come up with the plan.” Ms Chesters said it was crucial to start the conversation before funding was made available through the NDIS. But there is still no roll-out date for the NDIS in the region.

Ice action for families

By CHRISTINE McGINN

A NEW family support program will be developed in the Loddon Mallee region as part of the national Ice Action Plan. Bendigo Community Health Services (BCHS) will receive $200,000 over the next four years from the state government to expand its support services for families affected by ice. BCHS chief executive officer Kim Sykes said the funding recognised a real gap in the need for family support services. “We could all imagine how difficult the situation would be for a family member to have a son or a daughter or partner

with a drug problem and not know what to do about it, how to access help or how talk to them and instead watch their life deteriorate and feel helpless,” she said.

there is real value in developing this program in response to the needs we see now.” BCHS is one of 16 Victorian community health services sharing in $3.2 million in funding

There is no single solution to stop ice – it takes a coordinated approach “It is a really important investment and has the chance to make a significant difference for families and help us intervene earlier. “There has been no specific funding for family support (previously) and we believe that

over the next four years. The funding allows health service providers to expand their counselling, peer support and group-based therapies for families and supporters of people affected by ice and other drugs.

Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said the services would start in October and give families practical strategies for setting boundaries, dealing with conflict and taking care of themselves and others. “There is no single solution to stop ice – it takes a coordinated approach. This funding supports local communities and health services to deliver a range of new, effective initiatives to tackle ice in their community,” he said. The service is in addition to the Ice Action Plan’s new education program to help families recognise the signs of drug use and how to respond.

Bright future A HIDDEN gem in the heart of Bendigo has been revealed in plans to transform an unused space into a modern, outdoor bar. The local joint venture, Handle Bar, will tap into the vacant courtyard behind Get Naked Espresso Bar on Mitchell Street, and create a grassroots outdoor bar. Bendigo Community Ventures Pty Ltd director Christopher Kelly said it would be an outdoor venue, able to adapt to different events and functions. “The inspiration... starts with a love of Bendigo really and observing the way that the creative culture here is taking off. We see a great local food scene, venues embracing more live music, Bendigo becoming a craft beer hub and more public art by young people,” he said. “We figured a relaxed garden bar in the CBD would complement everything that is happening really well. Hence the arrival of Handle Bar.” Mr Kelly said the space would embrace live music, local produce and beverages, upcycled materials and would also pro-

Locals would access Handle Bar through Get Naked Espresso Bar after a legal agreement was signed between the leaseholder of Get Naked Espresso Bar, the landlords and BCV. “We were very fortunate that

the owner of Get Naked Espresso Bar, Jesse Gollan, was not only open to the idea, but was keen enough to become involved himself and is one of the directors of the company,” Mr Kelly said. “The two businesses will work complementary to one another, meaning there might be a pretty mad espresso martini on the menu.”

Backing for new Radius jobs plan BENDIGO Business Council has welcomed the new Radius initiative based in the Morley Johnson building, which will create 50 new jobs for people with a disability in the centre of Bendigo. “This visionary project will increase the vibrancy of our central business district,” business council chief executive officer Leah Sertori said. The former Toyworld building will allow Radius to expand its existing social enterprise, and enable supported employees to build a skill base in the retail, hospitality and creative industries. Business activities will include textile and graphic design, product and textile manufacturing, and screen-printing. “A business of this nature will draw visitors from around the region and further abroad into the heart of Bendigo. Bendigo Business Council encourages diverse, dynamic retail and hospitality activity within the CBD to drive increased visitation. Radius’ latest venture ticks those boxes and will attract new traffic into the centre of town, promoting Bendigo as an inclusive, welcoming city.” The ground floor of the iconic building will house Radius’ social enterprises, while upper levels are expected to feature office space for small and micro-businesses to rent. “Space for small business in the CBD is of premium value. The Bendigo Business Council is pleased to see a demand for a CBD address for small business being met in a contemporary and innovative way in one of Bendigo’s beautiful heritage buildings,” Ms Sertori said. Radius CEO Cath McDonald said Bendigo is a city that has a long history of making enterprise happen. “Late 2015, the Morley Johnson will be open with four floors buzzing with 50 new jobs and attracting an additional 200 people to the centre of Bendigo each day.” Ms Sertori said the BBC encouraged its members to get behind this “unique and exciting venture” at the Morley Johnson Building, and would promote the opportunity to lease office space to small businesses within its network. More information about Bendigo’s latest inner city development can be found at the Morley Johnson website morleyjohnsonbuilding.org.au

THE next generation of farmers will be able to apply to upskill and gain with a new government scholarship program. Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford launched the Young Farmer Scholarships Program at the Victorian Farmers Federation Annual Conference last Friday. The scholarships, of up to $10,000, are designed to help young farmers develop their skills, invest in new technologies and business practices. Up to 15 young farmers and farm workers, each year, for the next four years, will be able to receive up to $5000 for

traning or study. Additional funds will be given towards on-farm or professional development. “We’re supporting young farmers to grow their skills and invest in new technologies and business efficiencies, ensuring Victoria’s regions retain the talent needed to prosper,” she said. “Food and fibre are the future of our economy and building a competitive and skilled agriculture workforce are critical to growing and protecting this vital $11 billion sector.” Victorian Farmers Fed-

Lighting the Regions is the biggest street light partnership ever undertaken in Australia. The project continues to roll out across regional Victoria with 85% of Bendigo street lights now changed to more energy efficient LED lighting.

eration President Peter Tuohey said it was important for young farmers to upskill and increase their business knowledge. Youth are also encouraged to give their expressions of interest to apply to sit on Labor’s nine-member Young Farmer Ministerial Advisory Council. The council will identify issues affecting agriculture and advise Ms Pulford about the opportunities to attract youth to the sector. Expressions of interest close July 19 and more information is available at www.vic. gov.au/youngfarmers

REGIONAL Victorian jobs and infrastructure will be boosted under a new state government funding initiative. Acting Premier James Merlino announced the $500 million Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund (RJIF) on Monday. The fund aims to help address key challenges for regional Victoria’s growth and build critical infrastructure. Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford encouraged local councils and community groups to apply for funding. The RJIF supports three programs with 10 public grant program streams through the $250 million Regional Infrastructure Fund, $200m Regional Jobs Fund and $50m Stronger Regional Communities Plan. Mr Merlino said the fund would kick-start growth in regional Victoria and put “our regions back at the heart of Victoria’s economy”. Ms Pulford said the fund would invest in new, innovative projects to attract people to the regions. “We’re making sure our regional families are supported to live healthy, safe and comfortable lives, and that we are funding the projects communities and businesses need to create jobs and drive growth,” she said. Community groups can apply for funding from July 1.

We’re changing your street lights! COST SAVINGS The new LEDs save on power costs, requiring 77% less power to operate compared to current Mercury Vapour street lights. The LED lights last up to five times longer than the current lights and require less ongoing replacement, repair and maintenance costs.

LIGHTING LEDs provide a brighter, more natural light which is distributed exactly where it is meant to go for ultimate lighting efficiency. The new LEDs retain their brightness for the life of the light where the old lights become dimmer with age.

RECYCLING The old Mercury Vapour street lights will be dismantled and most components will be reused or recycled. Metals such as aluminium, copper and steel are recovered and plastic and acrylic components will be recycled. The Eaglehawk Recycle Shop is involved in the sorting and recycling process, and has approximately 20 staff involved in the recycling project.

A very good life By DIANNE DEMPSEY

ONE of the cheery, uplifting themes of this year’s Bendigo Writers Festival is food and the art of good living. An exemplar of the good life is the amiable Matthew Evans who has been entertaining us on SBS with his Gourmet Farmer series. A former chef and food critic, Matthew retreated to Puggle Farm, a smallholding in the Huon Valley, several years ago. “Our aim is to produce just about all of the food ourselves from the property,” he said. “We probably provide about 90 per cent of it. We’re into dairy products at the moment. We had to get a licence to keep a couple of cows and we’re experimenting with different cheeses and yoghurt. The other produce we use is all seasonal, broccoli, cauliflowers, whatever is growing at the time.” Matthew said A Common Ground, the artisan Tasmanian foodstore he co-owns with Nick Haddow, had been going out to different parts of Tasmania and setting up long-table lunches. “But it took a lot of effort and time and wasn’t sustainable for us,” he said.

NEWS • 9

www.bendigoweekly.com.au

COMMON GROUND: Matthew Evans. “Now we’ve reorganised and we’re doing all the meals at our place so it’s a much more viable process.” On the national obsession with restricting different food groups, Matthew says there has to be a balance. “People often blame being ill on the food they eat, so they’ll take out all the gluten or dairy. But there are two extremes. On one hand you have people eating a diet of processed and manufactured food and on the other

hand, people see food as the enemy,” he said. “We’ve evolved over the years and we’re able to digest a broad range.” Matthew has visited Bendigo before but hasn’t been to any of the restaurants. “I’ve been told I’ll be taken out to some great places and I’m looking forward to trying the wines,” he said. When he’s not growing his food or cooking or eating it, Matthew’s favourite pastime is reading cookbooks and writing them himself. He is the author of nine books on food, including the authoritative Real Food Companion, his autobiography Never Order Chicken on a Monday, and the recently co-authored Gourmet Farmer Deli Book. And he never gets sick of thinking about food. “You may eat a huge meal and think that’s it, I’m over it; but a few hours later you’re hungry again.” Matthew Evans and fellow Gourmet Farmers Ross O’Meara and Nick Haddow will be interviewed by food writer Dani Valent. The Bendigo Writers Festival opening event will be held at Ulumbarra Theatre on Friday August 7, 7pm to 8pm. BOOK REVIEW - Page 21

Bendigo ups spend on mental health By CHRISTINE McGINN

BENDIGO Health has poured $77.6 million into its mental health services in the past two financial years, more than any other large regional health service provider. According to the state government’s 2014-15 health policy and funding guidelines, Bendigo Health Care Group spent a sixth of its annual $227.6m 2013-14 annual budget on mental health. The organisation increased its mental health expenditure in 2014-15 to $39.1m, in comparison to the previous year’s $34.5m spend. Bendigo Health Care Group’s mental health spend remains larger than that of any other large

regional health service provider according to the report. In 2013-14 to 2014-15, Ballarat Health Services allocated $60.8m in its budget while Latrobe Regional Hospital spent $75.5m. Bendigo Health executive and clinical director of

We have experienced very high, steady levels of demand for some time psychiatric services associate professor Philip Tune said the psychiatric unit accounted for 10 per cent of the hospital’s in-patient beds and 30 per cent of the hospital’s yearly outpatient contact. “The demand is very steady. We are obviously not that far away from hav-

have an integrated mental health facility and an additional 38 in-patient beds. “We only see one very small corner of people with mental illness and it is at the more severe end,” Prof Tune said. “When you are dealing with people that are acutely ill or have an illness that is a remitting, relapsing condition you need a mix of services including in-patient and step down beds, and a range of community-based services.” Prof Tune said the single ward was an important step to reducing the stigma around mental health. “It then just becomes part of health which it is,” he said. “It is symbolically extremely important and practically too.”

Surveyors map out 100 years MORE than 400 Army surveyors will descend on Bendigo from all over Australia this weekend to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Bendigo was the home of the Army Survey Regiment which was the largest of the Survey Corps Units. It was located at Fortuna Villa from 1942 until its disbandment in 1996. Its members formed close bonds with the citizens of Bendigo. The Bendigo Council conveyed the privilege of the Freedom of the City to the unit in 1970. That close association will be celebrated at a civic reception in the Bendigo Town Hall to mark this occasion on Saturday lunchtime. Unveiling the story board will take place at Fortuna Villa at 3pm on Sunday. The Survey Corps was one of the smallest corps in the Australian Army but with exceptional “esprit de corps”. This is evidenced by the large numbers still wanting to attend the series of functions held over the weekend culminating in the unveiling of a brass plaque and story board at Fortuna Villa.

BENEFACTORS: Emergency services are the focus of this year’s inventor awards.

Focus on safety INNOVATIVE emergency service and safety ideas will be at the centre of this year’s 2015 Bendigo Inventor Awards. Bendigo Inventor Awards Committee chair Paul Chapman said the awards will feature innovator and inventor of the year categories. Mr Chapman said there was a major prize for ideas and inventions that would ease the challenges of emergency services in the region. “This year we are shifting the focus of the awards

with the backing of our local emergency services,” Mr Chapman said. “Over the past five years the BIA has developed a reputation for discovering and supporting inventors and innovators across a range of disciplines and activities. “However as a point of difference for the future, the BIA has decided to direct its focus towards the emergency services on which we all rely, and to engage with corporations and organisations that wish to be aligned with successful inventions and innovations.

“The program promotes practical improvements in the emergency management/services sector, and consequently aids domestic sector leadership initiatives for safer communities nationally and globally.” Locals are encouraged to share their ideas and help improve the local emergency service sector. Applications close on August 26 and winners will be announced on November 5 at the Capital Theatre. For more information visit www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/ inventor, or call 5434 6247.

Dry times

ZO580635

Following unprecedented success in 2014, Bendigo Health has entered Dry July for the third year. Dry July is an online fundraising campaign which encourages participants to go booze free for the 31 days in July. The campaign raises funds for adults living with cancer and all funds raised for Bendigo Health will go towards improving oncology services. Last year the campaign raised more than $70,000 for Bendigo Health which will be added to this year’s proceeds and be put towards the refurbishment of the Nolan Street cancer patient accommodation units. Bendigo identities taking up

the challenge this month include businessman Graeme Stewart, who will be joined by Bendigo Health’s Robin Monro, Robyn Lindsay and Trudy Haines as ambassadors for the month. “Dry July is a good way of raising money for Bendigo Health and local cancer patients, and if Paul DeAraugo and Ray Wild could do it last year, then it must be pretty easy,” Mr Stewart said. Bendigo Health Foundation director Jane Anderson said Dry July is a wonderful concept that continues to gain momentum. “By committing to being ‘dry’ for a month, not only are participants doing something good for their own health and encourag-

Glanville makes his mark at 80

By Dianne Dempsey

The Weekly’s vibrant cartoonist Ian Glanville turns 80 this week and every Thursday we look forward to his visit when he brings in his latest copy. In what has been a varied and illustrious career, one particular moment stands out for Ian when in the mid 60s he was part of the pioneering days of television at BCV 8. “We had to do everything ourselves,” he says. “I operated the camera as well as working in front of it.” “One of our programs was the Cohn’s Cobbers Teleclub and as part of that I created a character called Strawberry Scarecrow. “We used to make public appearances and do promotions and I’d arrive on the back of a truck decked up in character. The children thought I was magic – a real life scarecrow. They would pinch my arms to feel for the straw and I’d come home black and blue, covered in bruises.” After 10 years in television Ian started working for La Trobe university in their multi-media department. He worked there for 32 years supporting a variety of faculties. Meantime in 1977 he was invited to work as a regular cartoonist for the Bendigo Advertiser under the pseudonym of Glanville’s Glimpses. It was in this position that he refined the art of cartooning.

Ian started with the Bendigo Weekly in 1997, two years after we set up shop. Some 500 cartoons later, he’s never missed a deadline. Over the years he has also fleshed out his career doing caricatures, photography and text book illustrations. His cartoons for the Weekly are done in watercolour and ink and apart from satire, fundamental to his style is a genuine affection for Bendigo and its citizens.

stay here,” he says. “The good thing about staying in your home town is being known. It’s great when people come up to you and say something like, ‘I’ve still got your drawing’- you wouldn’t get that in Melbourne.” Ian’s grandfather came to Bendigo from Cornwall in the 1870s looking for gold, his father was a watchmaker who worked for Treloar’s and his mother was a homemaker. Letter of support The Bendigo District Astronomical Society offers this letter of support for the continuation of the Discovery Science and Technology Centre, which currently serves the inquisitive minds of young and old in the community. BDAS enjoys an amicable partnership with the Discovery Centre under a Memorandum of Understanding. It is a partnership that benefits both parties in educating both young and older minds in the pursuit of science. BDAS enjoys the Discovery Centre as its base for various astronomical activities. It is the obvious venue to showcase Sidewalk Astronomy that is enjoyed by large numbers of the public keen to learn more about the amazing universe of which we are a part. The centre is used to host conferences that attract guest speakers from all over the country. Special events such as eclipses and planet transits attract keen would-be astronomers throughout the year. It does not make sense to see such an interactive venue close the doors to the younger generation keen to be a part of the wonderful world of science. We live in a world where there is an emphasis on learning and new technology with future discoveries in the hands of the young. The Discovery Centre was the host venue for the 2015 VASTROC (Victorian Astronomical Convention) that showcased national learned speakers to a large and varied audience. This convention is held in a number of different locations throughout Victoria, with the Bendigo conference being a great success. This again exhibits the close mutual relationship between the Discovery Centre and BDAS. Our extensive library of astronomical books is also housed at the centre along with a number of astronomical observing instruments. BDAS is instrumental in hosting many instructional astronomy nights for students from an extensive range of schools during the year attracting thousands of keen minds, in which our future lies. To find another venue for BDAS would not offer the beneficial relationship that it shares with the Discovery Science and Technology Centre. Given that science and technology underpin everything we do, it is vital to foster interest in children and adults; Bendigo’s Discovery Science and Technology Centre has played a central role in science

awareness for the public for 20 years, and should continue to do so. Bendigo District Astronomical Society

Protection of significant landscape We are happy that the City of Greater Bendigo is to formally recognise something that most people who live in our area already know, that Big Hill and Ravenswood are significant landscapes. We mustn’t leave this glorious gateway to Bendigo open to ruin in the pursuit of private gain. There is talk that the 600-hectare Belvoir Park Road and the 1000 hectare Ravenswood Run farms may be subdivided into Residential 1 – approximately 20,000 people – or Rural Residential (2Ha) lots – approximately 10,000 people. The southern gateway to Bendigo over the Big Hill range is not a council-designated residential growth area, and these subdivisions would break the Urban Growth Barrier (UGB), which would result in increased rates for us all. We have enough land within the planned urban growth boundaries for 20 years’ supply of residential housing, and 70 years supply of rural residential land. The Bendigo community doesn’t need any subdivisions at Big Hill and Ravenswood. The southern UGB at Big Hill was set in 2004 and has been endorsed by councils ever since. We hope others who see this area as a significant landscape will also write a short submission to council to support the overlay that will protect Big Hill and Ravenswood into the future. Express trains or expressed opinions? In reply to Christine Vren and her concerns of travelling to Watergardens – Track for all, Bendigo Weekly, June 26. The concept of an express train from Bendigo to Melbourne and back does not include stopping at all stations. To cater for all, there needs to be a timetabled arrangement of express and stopping trains, and commuters who are prepared to wait for or accept them. The train service to and from Melbourne for Bendigo travellers is excellent when one considers that not so long ago Bendigo was serv-

iced by three trains per day. If the service is to cater for all, as you wish Christine, then I suggest a time-tabled train to stop at Watergardens rather than interfere with those commuters, elderly and or disabled, who wish to arrive in Melbourne to attend business or for doctors’ and hospital appointments, they should be considered as well. They board an express train to Melbourne only to be blocked by metro trains which have their service extended to Sunbury and given priority. Perhaps we could have a 50/50 split of trains which service Watergardens and express to Southern Cross. But, the service will continue to experience problems of “catering for all” as an express service while the metro section continues to grow out to the growing suburbs of Melbourne, and given priority over the country train line – nothing has changed. If there are concerns as you raise, then they should be addressed to the rail authority and get something done about it. As Golden Square is part of the increased high density growth area of Bendigo being pushed by our council, is it time to include Golden Square in the timetable and re-open Golden Square rail station? Funding for Discovery I write to urge that Bendigo Discovery Centre not be closed, rather that guaranteed ongoing funding be found. My preference is that this should be provided at least partly (if not mostly) at State and Federal Government level. • Science is already underfunded in Australia. We must not continue to undermine any chance to enthuse primary and secondary students with the new experiences which Discovery has been providing for both rural and metropolitan schools. • Having worked in secondary education for 30 years, I know full well how hard it is to attract passionate, effective science teachers to the service. It is even harder to keep them in rural areas. Most primary schools do not have a dedicated science curriculum. • Having observed students in the Discovery Centre in both formal and informal activities, it is obvious they are excited and engaged while they are there. As well, programs are often adapted for a specific group’s requirements. • As entry costs rise, the centre provides science kits to send out to rural schools whose travelling times and costs are problematic. Many students in remote schools would be on the road for seven or eight hours or more to get to and from

Melbourne, compared to half that time for a Bendigo visit. Those resources are invaluable to both primary and secondary teachers. • After visiting Discovery, the extra interactions between students, teachers, and parents are also really noticeable and generate even more learning and enthusiasm for science. • A further benefit of Discovery is that it adds to the tourist attractions in Bendigo, although this is less of a consideration when compared to the educational benefits to rural students throughout the whole year. Finally, and importantly, if this science outlet closes, we are bound to lose valuable expertise from the whole region. Not only that, it will further reduce the impact on young minds, which often leads them to seek careers in science later in life. C J Holmes, Woodend

Story continues THERE are few businesses that could stake their claim as having as large an influence over this community as Bendigo Bank can, and this week’s 20th birthday cannot pass without reflecting on the contribution this business has made to our city for more than 150 years. To be precise, it was a meeting of about 80 local people in the heady gold rush days, back on July 9, 1858 where the Bendigo Land and Building Society was created. From such humble origins, no one would have imagined the entity that has since been created, or the wealth the organisation has helped to nurture and develop. The deliberate decision to establish and maintain its headquarters in Bendigo helped ease the pain many local economies experienced during the GFC of about 2007-2008, and the fact the new bank headquarters were officially opened (by then prime

BendigoWeekly

Editorial Comment minister Kevin Rudd) in this period is further evidence of a bank that has always been prepared to have a go, and to be a champion of the community it’s such an integral part of. Later this year, the Bendigo’s Community Bank arm will celebrate its annual gathering here in our city’s brand new Ulumbarra Theatre. An indeterminable value of social capital has been raised and shared among 311 communities who have embraced the community bank concept since the first branch opened back in 1998 serving the rural Victorian towns of Minyip and Rupanyup.

Again, few would have dared to dream that just 17 years later, another 310 communities would have become part of the program, and this has made a very real and tangible difference to many businesses, families and community groups in locations dotted across the Australian continent. Bendigo Bank was founded out of a simple ethos that’s as easy to understand today as it was back in 1858. Feeding into prosperity and not just off it helped a then fledgling building society prosper through a period in history when Bendigo was among the richest cities in the world. An incredible amount of wealth uncovered in the gold rush spawned a multitude of businesses and industries that prospered and helped build the city we share today. 157 years later, but in a very different era, and in a very different time, the story continues.

ONE of this paper’s great links to the past continues to be a shining light for a rich and diverse media today via his much admired cartoons that appear each week in the Bendigo Weekly. Ian Glanville is a survivor, a man with fond memories and many more fascinating stories about the local media industry, dating back half a century or thereabouts. Glanville, as he is affectionately known, continues to produce commentary through his creativity, even as he prepares to celebrate his 80th birthday this weekend. Among my prized possessions from my comparatively brief time in local media is a signed Glanville cartoon from a 2007 edition of the Bendigo Weekly, when I went head to head with Steve Gibbons in the federal election. I lost the election but I will always treasure that cartoon. Coinciding with Glanville’s 80th, this humble paper celebrates its 18th birth-

day this weekend, an occasion that cannot be overlooked. Created out of the desire to do things better, and in a way that better suited its customers, the Bendigo Weekly remains one of the most highly regarded community newspapers in regional Australia. and we continue to print and deliver those papers into more than 38,000 mailboxes across our region, then our readers will pick that paper up, and they will read it. It’s a newspaper’s role, and privilege, to serve the community it is a part of, and the Bendigo Weekly does not shy away from that responsibility and opportunity. At times we’ve made our

TV journo aims for a top spot I

T’S easy to imagine the school-aged Sarah Lawrence pretending to be a TV journalist in front of the mirror. It has certainly been on her wish list since those days, and the dream has come true. After stints on iPTV and Prime7, Lawrence is one of three Bendigobased journalists for WIN Bendigo. Lawrence’s day kicks off about at 7am, and as is the order of the era she checks Twitter, with special emphasis on her Bendigo contacts, then it’s on to TV with ABC Breakfast. Lawrence heads to the office for 8.15am. It’s not just a case of starting from there, with most stories surfacing the previous day, in some cases this involves sports stories from the weekend. With the task of two stories a day, work is divided between two other journalists and two cameras, which involves a bit of juggling to cover the workload. There’s plenty of background work to be done involving a conference call across the state, and bulletins have to be written for other journalists to broadcast. Of course there’s the all-important deadline. Stories have been taped, edited and voiced over by the team and submitted for use in the bulletin. “Ideally by 4.30pm or 5pm we have to have submitted the story, but

on a late story we can go as late as 6.30pm,” Lawrence said. “But that’s only in really stressful situations. We do try to have it in by 2.30pm so it can be checked and ready for air. It’s rarely changed, but it does happen sometimes.” There’s a limitation to the bigger stories, with a story length of 80 seconds.

I am prepared to work in any state or anywhere in the world SCREEN QUEEN: WIN Bendigo journalist Sarah Lawrence. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

“Probably about 90 per cent of the time we could make the story longer, it can be hard to get the full story across,” Lawrence said. Life in the regions can be a bit easier with fewer media outlets chasing the stories, but there’s still a chance to ask the right questions to senior politicians. It’s good practice for Lawrence who makes no secret of her desire to work in a capital city.

“I’ll go anywhere,” she said. “It will take some doorknocking, but I am prepared to work in any state or anywhere in the world. I have wanted to do the job since high school. “The job is very satisfying, and even when I have a bad day I pull myself up and say ‘this is what I have always wanted to do’. If I was an outsider looking at my job I’d just say

‘be grateful’.” Lawrence was editor of the school magazine, in both primary and high schools, an early indication of things to come. Even now Lawrence is some way up the career ladder, she is aware the dream of being a news anchor may be some time off. “It’s hard to get in,” she said. “Maybe there will be fewer an-

chors in the future with the changing media landscape, and the internet may be a threat. “But I think habits are hard to change, and people still want to sit in front of the television to watch the news.” You can tell Sarah Lawrence is going to push hard for that lead role, and childhood ambitions sometimes come true. – Steve Kendall

Reliving the Floyd experience E

XPERIENCE Floyd is an 11-piece band of talented musicians from Adelaide who are dedicated to one goal – to authentically replicate the brilliant sights and sounds of arguably one of the world’s greatest progressive rock bands of all time. What’s more, students from California Gully Primary School will be taking part in the show, which plays the Capital tonight. With the release of 1973’s The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd abruptly went from a moderately successful acid-rock band to one of rock music’s biggest acts.

The recording, in fact, remained on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart for 741 weeks. Experience Floyd isn’t just a rock band, this is a live show with full-on musical theatre; a sound and light spectacular that leaves you breathless, creating an ambience second to none and making it an unforgettable “life” experience. From stratospheric guitars and sax, to haunting synthesisers, impressive bass and percussion, these talented and dedicated musicians leave no stone unturned to ensure every aspect of the original Pink Floyd music is captured authentically.

EXPERIENCE FLOYD

Experience Floyd respects what the original Pink Floyd gave to the world with their music and want to make it real for their audience. As bass guitarist Mark Dole said: “At core, we are looking at the legacy of the music. “Our vision and desire is to keep their music alive so they will be remembered in years to come. We want to stand up as the next representatives of these guys’ in the 21st century, by becoming the truly authentic Pink Floyd concept show for Australia.” This three hour musical extravaganza can be seen at The Capital, Bendigo tonight.

E had a go at enlarging the sheep herd this year and added 76 merino ewes to our bundle of 10 pets. The working girls arrived, supposedly in lamb, but my first lesson in sheep farming was don’t take anyone’s word for how long the rams have been in with the ewes. An ex-friend arranged the deal. He’s an ex-friend for arranging it so badly, but I only have myself to blame – fancy trusting someone’s word. Anyway, after taking time off on the dates given we returned to work knowing we’d soon have lambs on the way, and that started last week. Lambs seem to come on the darkest and coldest night, and as it was the first time the merinos had given birth many had no idea what to do. Some were left, some were looked at in amazement and some were just big. The poor ewes were caught with huge heads half way out. This is where the long-

suffering Mrs Kendall came into her element. Perhaps at this point we should call her the long-suffering Dr Kendall, because she is a vet. Every time there was a hint of a problem it was time to roll up the sleeves to help mum along. It has definitely been a harder time than when our larger pets had their babies. Dr K helped a few straining mums, and then immediately admitted them to hospital. When I say hospital I mean pens in the shed, but at one point there was a row of four pens with ewes and lambs “bonding” as Mrs K put it.

After two days they went outside for a day before being released back to the mob. Two of the totally dumped lambs were rescued from the paddock, and are now being bottle fed. Believe me they were dumped and cold and near death, but with Dr K on their case they are vibrant and thriving. Our vet nurse friend Courtney who I mentioned a couple of weeks ago had them for a day, and they gained weight and health, such was her power of motherhood. So all in all it’s been pleasant if a little tiring, and

Dr K has her bundle of little lambs to play with. I tell you one thing, the washing machine has taken a pounding with all of our clothing covered in sheep muck of various types. I am too embarrassed to admit quite how much we were ripped off over pregnancies, and my solicitor has been consulted, but I will be running the show myself next year to cut out the problems. But I guess by then the maternity ward will have to be a whole lot bigger if Dr K has her way. Best start building. - Steve Kendall Twitter@stevekendall1

arts focus Post Office Gallery Opulence: luxury in early Bendigo homes July 3 – October 4 IN a sense, contemporary homes, with their clean lines and cold smooth surfaces, are still reacting to the decorative style of the Victorian era. The new exhibition at the Post Office Gallery reflects this opulent aesthetic. In a Victorian home every available surface was filled with objects, curiosities, pictures and furnishings. Nowadays you’ll be lucky to find a bowl of fruit on the bench top of your modern brick veneer. The Victorian style peaked in the 1880s, a time when many Bendigo citizens were rapidly building their fortunes and establishing the city. You can see a great example of Victorian opulence at Fortuna Villa where the interior photographs included in the exhibition show lavish decoration and a flamboyant personal style. Octoroon raises questions about the compartmentalisation of aspects of identity and what the focus of a person’s identity is or should be. Until July 19. Julie Miller Markoff Visual Arts Award exhibition The Glory Box Rosina Byrne THE Glory Box is the first of three Julie Miller Markoff Visual Arts Award exhibitions to be presented at the VAC. Rosina Byrne received the inaugural award in 2014. Administered by La Trobe University, the award aims to assist students in the transition from art school to professional practice. The Mildura-based multi-disciplinary artist seeks to expose the struggle of certain groups of migrant

women who continue to live oppressed lives, despite their residence in Australia. Rosina Byrne says equal rights is commonly promoted as a standard of Australian life; however it does not exist as a reality to many of these females. They live under the rules of a patriarchal system dating back many generations. The exhibition highlights the subjugation of the female gender within these communities. Byrne explains: “These objects, photographs, the video and sound, make manifest my desire to expose and highlight this oppression within our community, locally and globally.” The launch will take place at the VAC on Thursday, July 9 at 6pm, with opening remarks by business woman, entrepreneur, and supporter of the arts Julie Miller Markoff. The exhibition will continue until Sunday, August 9.

ATE last year, Bendigo Wholefoods owner Darren Murphy was part of the Healthy Together Food Forums run by the City of Greater Bendigo. It really hit Darren at the forums how access to quick, healthy options can be limited in Bendigo, especially for busy people on the go. After much discussion, Darren and his team came up with a series of solutions called “On the Go” featuring easy, affordable, accessible wholefood meal options. The first stage was to launch weekly seasonal

organic shop boxes – a preordered box of organic fruit and vegetables, some pantry essentials (like bread and eggs) and a recipe for a quick and easy dinner using the contents of the box. Just grab and go. Last week they added a seasonal organic fruit and veggie box. Now they are working on a home delivery service, and a Brain Food Box full of organic fruit and healthy snacks to be delivered to businesses. A new lockup M

ARKET Square was the area bounded by Mundy, Hargreaves, Williamson Streets and Lyttleton Terrace. In the centre of Market Square was where the Sandhurst Borough Council built the Corn Exchange or Town Hall. The Town Hall was officially opened on August 5, 1859. The original building had been designed by the Town Surveyor, George Avery Fletcher. Mr Fletcher was also responsible for the design and supervision of the construction of the Municipal Lockup, which was situated in Market Square on the eastern side of the Town Hall. Plans and specifications had been readied and the construction was let out to tender in the autumn of 1861. Successful for tender of the lock-up project was, Mr W Merfin, who was to have considerable difficulty, firstly in acquiring the exact type of bricks which had been specified for the project. The various brickmakers along the Back Creek were at the time producing only red bricks, however the contract stipulated that the quoins on the corners of the building needed light cream bricks. Cream bricks were also required for the door and window surrounds. The second reason that there was a delay in the con-

struction of the Municipal Lockup was because of the constant heavy rain which prevented the bricklayers from doing their side of the work. The frustration of contractor Mr Merfin was such that he wrote to the council early in July 1861 seeking an extension of time to complete the building contract. Zinc sheeting for the roof had been on hand as was the timber for the roof framing. As soon as the weather cleared the work went ahead rapidly, Mr Merfin was also successful in gaining a secondary contract in August for the erection of a yard on the eastern side or back of the lock-up. The value of that portion of the contract was for £47. Friday, September 13, 1861 was a significant date in that the first of the inmates were held in the cells of the new lockup. The Police Court, which used the large upstairs meeting room of the Town Hall for its hearings, was able to have those prisoners held in them and brought in from the new adjacent building up the stairs, escorted by the police officers on duty. Frequently the Police Magistrate, Lachlan MacLachlan was presiding on the bench, assisted by various honorary magistrates. Constable Meredith was

the officer in charge of the lock-up, for him this was a far superior accommodation than what had previously been in use on Camp Hill. In the original plans that G A Fletcher produced for the building no provision had been made for the lock-up keeper’s accommodation and as a result some further plans were drawn up for a room on the eastern or Mundy Street side of the new building. At the council meeting on November 1, 1861 the councillors viewed in all six tenders for the additional room, and that of Mr C Davis was the cheapest, coming in at £73. Mr Davis’s tender price was accepted and the work was carried out expeditiously. The accompanying photograph by B P Batchelder was taken prior to the construction of the additional room which would have been partially hidden at any rate from the angle that the photographer took this shot. Buildings then existing on the eastern side of Mundy

Street can be seen in the background. By December 1861 a vagrant who had been arrested was complaining about the standard of the accommodation for his incarceration. Perhaps the same man had not experienced the “camp oven” that was previously used up on Camp Hill. Also about the same time some damage was done to one of the doors of the lockup by an inmate, perhaps he was attempting to make his escape? The Victorian colonial government paid a rental to the council for providing this building. The Corn Exchange was completed in 1859, it was the largest public building in early Bendigo, eclipsing the stone Police Barracks on Camp Hill. Government officials were eying off the suitability of the accommodation of some of the spaces within the new Town Hall to be utilised as a suitable venue for the Police Court to hold its sittings.

ISK is scary. Not for any other reason than how easily a 15-year-old girl is lured into the fantasy world of online love. She thinks it’s love. This novel for young adults hooked me from page one, and I am way beyond young adult. It’s not about online dating or romance, it’s about the cruel and calculating world of the online groomer and the impact it has on a school group of 15-year-olds. All the angst of teen crush is there, so not only is the main story moving along, the interactions between the youngsters and their parents is drawn out in a stress-filled life. Author Fleur Ferris has drawn on some of her experience as a police officer and paramedic to dig into the real but frightening world of online grooming. Predators seek a victim via a chat room and based on a collection of fabrications lure their victims to a meet. What starts out as a laugh for Sierra and Taylor takes a sinister twist. When Sierra asks Taylor to cover for her when she goes to meet a boy she’s chatted with online, Taylor begrudgingly does so. But when Sierra doesn’t come back that night, Taylor’s in a quandary. Should she raise the alarm?

Or should she sit tight because Sierra’s done this sort of thing before and will probably be back by breakfast? “My inspiration for writing Risk came from a number of incidents,” Ferris said. “A friend contacted me, worried about her 14-year-old daughter, who had fallen for a guy she had met online. “When the mother phoned the guy to confront him, he hung up, disconnected his phone and never made contact with the daughter again. Police were unable to identify him.” I found the book a mixture of gripping and horrific. There’s a message in there too, and I believe Ferris is steering the book as a major warning to the most vulnerable young women whose only mistake is seeking a bit of excitement and romance online. A must-read for parents of teenagers and I think the teenagers will learn something from it too. I certainly did. Fleur Ferris will be at the Bendigo Writers Festival from August 7 to 9. – Steve Kendall

Owner Ray Kent has 40 years’ experience in auto electrical work and automotive air conditioning. Alongside his wife Dianne and employees Zac and Tyson, Ray provides a prompt and professional service. Ray has the latest in diagnostic equipment for repairing your vehicle and can handle any wiring job or install your new starter, alternator or battery for you. Bendigo Auto Air firstly identify the refrigerant eliminating any problems that might occur and are licensed to buy and use R134A, the refrigerant used in all cars since 1993. They also stock a large range of air conditioning spare parts, batteries, starter motors and alternators at their workshop. ATO may request substantiation

T

HE Australian Taxation office has announced its focus this year will include work-related expense claims especially; overnight travel, motor vehicle expenses for travelling between home and work and the work related proportion for use of computers, phones and other electronic devices according to Goers and Maunder. The ATO is not limiting its attention to any particular occupation and will continue to review incorrect or excessive claims for all work place expenses. It is important that taxpayers can satisfy the ATO that they have incurred the expense in the relevant year of income in the course of earning assessable income and its not private, domestic or capital in nature. If taxpayers are claiming deductions of more than $300 (not including claims for car, meal allowance, award transport allowance and travel expenses) they must be able to substantiate the full amount (not just the portion exceeding $300) with written evidence. Motor vehicle expenses in deriving assessable income or carrying out business are allowed and may include petrol, oil, servicing and repairs, tyres, leasing charges and interest on car loans. Taxpayers have the option of either

claiming – cents per kilometre (5000km maximum per car applies) or log book method. If using a logbook the taxpayer must work out the business percentage of use, then claim the percentage for each car expense. Using a logbook requires keeping odometer records and all written evidence for all car expenses. Other travel expenses relevant to your income are also allowed, and may include short term car hire, fares, parking, meals and accommodation expenses incurred while working away from home. Self education expenses are also allowed as long as they are related to your work and you will receive a formal qualification from a school, college, university or other place of education. In relation to work related clothing and cleaning, the cost of purchasing, renting and cleaning can be claimed as a deduction for protective clothing, uniforms and occupation specific clothing. For further assistance with any taxation matters including the above, contact Goers and Maunder for all your business and personal taxation affairs, by phoning either their Epsom office on 5448 3980 or Castlemaine office on 5470 6565.

Bendigo Truck Centre Named 2015 Iveco Dealer of the Year ~ADVERTisEmEnT~

Leading regional truck dealership, Bendigo Truck Centre, has been named Iveco Trucks’ Dealer of the Year for 2015 at the company’s recently-held national dealer meeting in Melbourne. To be awarded the prestigious accolade, Bendigo Truck Centre (BTC) fought off heavy competition from a strong contingent of Iveco truck dealers from around the country, excelling in all judgement segments. In 2015 Iveco awarded points based on a dealership’s performance across sales, service and parts departments, dealership staff participation in training initiatives and feedback from customer care programs. The award was presented to BTC Dealer Principal, Euan McGowan, by Iveco Trucks Managing Director, Michael Jonson, who said the dealership was a worthy recipient. “It’s vitally important that we provide our customers with the highest levels of service, care and attention as possible,” Mr Jonson said. “The dealer network is our key partner in achieving this goal, our dealerships interact with our customers on a daily basis and are often the first point of contact between our brand and Iveco owners and prospects. “It’s essential then that the high standards we set as an organisation are reflected across the network, and by all accounts Bendigo Truck Centre is raising the bar with regards to providing Iveco ownership with an enjoyable and hassle-free ownership journey. I congratulate Euan and his team on doing an excellent job.” Mr McGowan said receiving the award was an honour that reflected well on the dealership and its ongoing emphasis on providing Iveco owners in North Central Victoria with total trucking solutions. “BTC also won the award in 2002, and we’re confident that now that we’ve tasted success again, we’ll be more motivated than ever to continue to be amongst Iveco’s top-performing dealerships well into the future.”

Tennis on the table By JOEL PETERSON

BENDIGO will play host to another top-class table tennis event next year, at a location with a difference. The City of Greater Bendigo has added some drama to the sport, staging the 2016 ITTF Oceania Olympic qualifiers at Ulumbarra Theatre. The event will run at the same time as the 2016 Oceania Championships, which have been held in Bendigo for the past three years.

Across two venues, Ulumbarra and the Flora Hill Stadium, around 80 players will battle it out in the Olympic qualifiers and Oceania titles. William Henzell and David Powell are the two top Australians likely to be in town for the event, while Miao Miao and Jian Fang Lay are the biggest names in Australian women’s table tennis, and will also be ready to go come the Easter weekend. The city’s major events department suggested

Ulumbarra as the ideal venue, according to ITTF Oceania’s Michael Brown. “It was an idea from City of Greater Bendigo, in regards to having a new venue,” he said. “We started talking about some of the ideas and through a number of site inspections we recognised it was feasible and from there we have been working out how to make this event as good as possible.” David Powell, who has completed in Bendigo for

the past three years, said he was looking forward to the change of location. “I think the qualifier is going to be a fantastic event, I think the venue is perfect,” he said. “I will head overseas toward the end of the year and come back to give myself the best chance of performing well.” The 2016 ITTF Oceania Championships will run from March 20-24, with the Olympic qualifiers held on Good Friday, March 25.

Sun Devil has Bendigo Spirit By JOEL PETERSON

THE Bendigo Spirit landed its first big recruit before the 2015/16 season, signing Arizona State University centre Joy Burke this week. The former Sun Devil joins the club on a one-year deal, having also played professionally in Denmark after leaving Tempe. Burke will give the Spirit’s interior defence a big boost with her presence around the basket, and her ability to run the floor in transition will suit the style of new Spirit coach Simon Pritchard. On paper, she proves a great foil to Gabe Richards, providing an athletic big to pair with Richards’ post game and impressive pass-

ing from the block. Burke played five seasons with Arizona State, appearing in 123 career games (43 starts). Her breakout year came in the 2012-13 college season, when she started 30 of 31 games after redshirting the previous season due to lingering effects from a concussion. Burke averaged seven points and six rebounds in 2012/13, and seven points and four rebounds in 2013/14. The 196cm centre started 11 of the team’s games in her final season, before heading to Europe to play with Danish club Horsholm. Spirit general manager Adam Tarr said Burke was a great signing for the club,

ON TARGET: Isabella Mason.

and expects her to prove popular on and off the floor. “Her imposing size will make her a great asset and a perfect partner to Gabe Richards,” he said. “Her rebounding has made people stand up and take notice wherever she plays. Her wingspan has been compared to that of a Californian condor. “We have also been impressed with her athleticism and coach Simon Pritchard is very keen to incorporate that into his game plan. “She is also a fantastic person with great competitive streak and a brilliant perspective. She will fit right in with the girls and the fans will fall in love with her.”

Player boost for the Braves

ATHLETIC: Joy Burke has signed with the Spirit.

BENDIGO takes on Sandringham on Saturday in a clash which, like every game for the rest of the season, is somewhat of a must-win. The Lady Braves can ill afford too many slip-ups, with the side sitting four games outside a top-four position in the league’s south conference. “Bernie (Harrower) takes charge of the team for the next month, and he certainly knows the situation,” Goodman, who is travelling through Europe for a month said. “When I look at it, we play Kilsyth again, Hobart again, Launceston twice, so if we can win those and they lose one or two, we are right in the hunt to even go top two. “We are going to be at our best over the second half of the season to reach our potential.” The Bendigo Bank Braves also travel to Sandringham on Saturday, taking on the Sabres from 7pm.

Finals action today RECORD numbers of matches have been played as this week’s Bendigo Bank winter Australian money and junior tournaments. The Nolan Street complex has been packed with players all week, and South Bendigo’s Neale Street facility has also played host to the under-10 competition. A massive 290 games were played on Tuesday through the junior and senior age groups, with 320 staged on Wednesday – both BTA records for a ranking points tournament. Number one mens singles seed Daniel Guccione breezed through his opening rounds, advancing to the semi-finals where he met qualifier Nathan Ponton.

SOLID HIT: Roni Noah. Photos: ANDREW PERRYMAN Berndigo’s Zac Lethlean did not make it past the the opening round, defeated by qualifier Erik Holt-Crossman in straight sets.

Braves’ big boost

By JOEL PETERSON

THE Champions IGA Bendigo Lady Braves’ playoff hopes have been given a huge lift – figuratively and literally – with Australian Opals centre Elyse Penaluna signing with the club this week. After a disappointing start to the season, Penaluna will play a crucial role as the Lady Braves chase a playoffs spot. The club announced its newest signing this week, to try and right the ship after a 6-6 start to the season. Penaluna has been playing with the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence, somewhat ironically scoring 22 points in a win over Bendigo last weekend. The Lady Braves had won three matches in a row heading into last beaten by the COE. With Tessa Lavey at the World Uni Games in South Korea and Kerryn Harrington under an injury cloud, Penaluna will add an inside threat to complement Kelly Wilson, Stacia Robertson and Stephanie Bairstow. “It is a huge boost, literally,” Lady Braves coach Jonathan Goodman said. “She just adds another dimension to what we can do, both offensively and defensively. “She has been playing well recently in Canberra. She scored 13 points in five minutes in one game, which is really encouraging.” Penaluna recently toured with the Opals after coming back from two knee reconstructions and consequent injuries during her recovery. The 193cm centre signed with Melbourne for the upcoming Womens National Basketball League season, and will use the remainder of the South East Australian Basketball League season to lead into the Boomers’ campaign. Continued Page 35

Snooker stars right on cue AFTER the shock exit of Australian gun Neil Robertson, the Australian Snooker Goldfields Open has been thrown wide open heading into the event’s finals this weekend. Competition will be fierce over the weekend, with the world’s best players facing off for one of world snooker’s biggest crowns. The Goldfields Open final will be held on Sunday at Bendigo Stadium.
