TRAIN GAIN Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

By PETER KENNEDY

GREATER Bendigo mayor Peter Cox wants trains on the Bendigo line to run every 40 minutes as part of a push for improved public transport services. There are 18 services to Melbourne every weekday from Bendigo, compared to 19 from Ballarat. By contrast, there are more than 50 trains each weekday from Geelong. Cr Cox said a 40-minute service frequency was achievable and that discussions with Public Transport Victoria were continuing via the

Mayor pushes for improved transport

Bendigo Metro initiative. “Having buses and local trains connect to Bendigo station will enhance people getting to the station to catch a train to Melbourne,” he said. He said while council was keen to retain skills in Bendigo, there were about 1400 people who use the morning services to Melbourne, and it was important for them to have access to a reliable service. He said Bendigo Metro was about

terminating more services at Epsom and Eaglehawk – all part of a goal of getting people to think about changing their mode of transport for one in every five days of the working week. “If trains and buses can offer that alternative along with walking and cycling, we could get up to 1000 cars off our roads every day,” Cr Cox said. Cr Cox said it did not make sense to have so many cars travelling on our roads every day, when some of us

could travel together. “We’re not saying everybody travel on the train or the bus, but if we can have a diversity of transport options and think about them, people choose more healthy ways to travel,” he said. Cr Cox also acknowledged the need to improve parking at several key railway stations across Bendigo, saying “it has become a problem and council is writing to the minister.”

He said there were also opportunities for development around stations at Kangaroo Flat, Epsom and Eaglehawk which also fulfilled criteria laid out in the city’s Residential Strategy for a more compact city. And while it’s early days for the metro project, Cr Cox said council and the state government were “on the same page”. “It’s encouraging that public transport means so much to people now. We’ve just got to get the dollars to catch up with demand.”

Land banks under fire

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, August 14, 2015

ASIC has commenced proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia against companies associated with Jamie McIntyre and the 21st Century Group in relation to their promotion and sale of interests to investors in five land banking schemes, including one on the outskirts of Bendigo. ASIC has alleged that the schemes are unregistered managed investment schemes and that the 21st Century Group companies and Mr McIntyre have been unlawfully carrying on an unlicensed financial services business. The five schemes are promoted and advertised as: • Bendigo Vineyard Estate & Resort, located at 51 Andrews Road, Bendigo. • Botanica, located at 805 Archer Rd, Kialla. • Secret Valley Estate, located at 955 Old Sydney Road, Bylands. • Oak Valley Lakes Estate & Resort, located at 124 Booth Road, Brookhill, Townsville. • Melbourne Grove Estate, located at 1491 Dohertys Road, Mount Cottrell. ASIC understands that there are over 100 investors in the schemes, which have been promoted to investors, including

through seminars, by entities associated with Mr McIntyre’s 21st Century Group. Companies associated with Mr McIntyre and the 21st Century Group are also the developers of the schemes (development companies). ASIC is seeking orders to appoint a provisional liquidator or receiver and manager to each of the five schemes and the development companies in order to take control of any assets and protect the interests of investors. The development companies are: • Bendigo Vineyard Estate Pty Ltd (ACN 600 088 211) • Archery Road Pty Ltd (ACN 162 921 735) • Secret Valley Estate Pty Ltd (ACN 602 817 532) • Kingsway South Holdings Pty Ltd (ACN 159 230 976) • Melbourne Tarniet Estate Pty Ltd (ACN 603 945 393) ASIC is also taking action against the development companies and the following for being involved in an unlicensed financial services business. • Mr Jamie Neville McIntyre (Surfers Paradise Qld) • Mr Dennis McIntyre (Surfers Paradise Qld)

VINE PLACE: 31 McLachlans Road. • Property Tuition Pty Ltd (ACN 129 421 281) • Education Holdings Pty Ltd (ACN 129 551 917) • Sourcing Property Pty Ltd (ACN 602 474 779) ASIC is also seeking orders that each of the defendants, including Mr McIntyre, be restrained from promoting, further promoting or operating any of the schemes and from operating a financial services business. The matter is set down for a first hearing today, August 14. ASIC’s proceedings are part of ASIC’s wider and ongoing investigation into land banking schemes. ASIC last week settled proceedings commenced against Midland HWY, which was the developer of a land banking scheme known as, Hermitage Bendigo (formerly, Acacia Banks) located outside of Bendigo. The 21st Century Group

also promoted this development. A POSTCARD-perfect boutique vineyard will go under the hammer this weekend at Lockwood. Lot 1 is represented by the property at 31 McLachlans Road is set on 5.8 hectares (14.3 acres) and includes up to four bedrooms, ensuite, spacious living areas and superb views of the stunning countryside. There’s also plenty of shedding, a five-megalitre water right and a bore, and there’s irrigated vines and plenty of fruit trees as well. Lot 2 includes 1.8 hectares of vacant land at the end of Montgomery’s Lane, and features an elevated home site (STCA), a row of olive trees and fertile creek flats leading down to the Bullock Creek. Elders Bendigo will auction the property in two lots, onsite at 31 McLachlans Road, Lockwood from 11am Saturday.

Vacant land in sights

THE City of Greater Bendigo has identified three key vacant parcels of land as potential medium density housing meccas. The Residential Strategy recognises land at Chum Street opposite Fortuna, the former Coliban Water depot in Golden Square and surplus land owned by La Trobe University on Osborne Street, Flora Hill as currently being in the too hard basket for development. However, there’s also a strong belief the sites could become highly sought after by developers keen to cash in on future opportunities. The strategy also acknowledges council has a role in de-risking

such sites, to make them more attractive to developers. Council strategy manager Trevor Budge said the organisation believed the Chum Street site offered a great opportunity to put a really innovative residential development together, due to its size and location. “Because it’s such a large site, you can do development that’s two, three or perhaps four storey development… it’s not going to impact on anyone because it’s so far away from any adjoining residence,” he said. A masterplan community, where one company takes on the whole development in one hit would also allow for properties to

be bought off the plan. “This requires a person to either take over the whole site or very large parts of the site so it will be done to a single plan.” Mr Budge said a higher density

would complement other activity planned for nearby Fortuna. “It actually reinforces the idea of it…. It sets the tone that this area is changing.” He said any masterplan com-

Go ahead for airport upgrade THE City of Greater Bendigo hopes work on a major $15 million redevelopment of the Bendigo airport will start later this year, after state planning minister Richard Wynne yesterday gave the green light for works to proceed. Bendigo Airport Advisory Committee chair, councillor James Williams said approval of a planning scheme amendment and permit needed to progress the much anticipated project meant the city would now refine and review final designs, before calling for expressions of interests for construction next month. Cr Williams said works would include construction of the 1600-metre runway, state-of-the- art lighting, fencing, guidance signs, illuminated wind direction indicators, electrical control cubicle and shelter and line marking. “The amendment also frees up approximately 12 hectares of land for an aviation compatible business park,” Cr Williams said. “It is going to be a tremendous asset for our region well into

the future. Mayor Peter Cox said the airport was a high priority for council, and the project was about further growing Greater Bendigo’s economic base by providing better and faster access to the rest of Victoria and the nation. “It will result in more jobs for the region as business owners realise the potential a new runway provides for expansion,” Cr Cox said. “It will also ensure that emergency services can retain their operations at the airport. “In addition it is estimated to inject $34.9m into the local economy and create 84 full-time equivalent jobs.” Cr Cox said this had been a great collaboration between local, state and federal governments and thanked planning minister Richard Wynne for his approval of such an important project for the region. The $15m Bendigo Airport expansion project is being funded with $5m contributions from the federal and state governments, as well as the City of Greater Bendigo.

the Victoria, with a 10 hectare site in such a fantastic location and we should capitalise on this.” The smaller former Coliban Water site was another prime site blessed with easy access from the highway, close to transport and within close proximity to the CBD. A previous report prepared for La Trobe University has identified the Osborne Street site as having great potential for a mixed development, with a focus on affordable compact housing appealing to changing markets. Commercial development would be integrated into the residential stock in the form of a multi-storey development.

PRECIOUS PRIZE: Arthur Alsop from the Bendigo Budgerigar Club with Precious. Photo: BILL CONROY

Budgies have their day at exhibition THEY say birds of a feather flock together, and Bendigo’s best and brightest budgies will be out on display on Sunday at the Bendigo Budgerigar Club’s annual exhibition. Held at Atkins Street Girl Guide Hall from 10am to 2pm, a diverse range of varieties and colours of budgies are sure to thrill bird lovers and curious onlookers alike. Club member Barry Butcher welcomed everyone to come and see the birds, and said the exhibition catered for amateur owners to

the most accomplished of budgerigar breeders. “We try to have a large variety of birds on display,” Mr Butcher said. He said club members were also happy to chat to people about the health and wellbeing of the budgerigars. With a celebrity in their midst, there is no doubt the calibre of budgie that the club produces and that will be on display at the exhibition is high quality. Club member Kath Alsop took out a national title with one of her birds ear-

lier this year, winning the crested title at the Australian National Budgerigar Championships. Held in Mandurah, Ms Alsop was unable to travel to the show but watched on a live stream as her crested bird took out the accolade. “I was absolutely thrilled to bits, I think I shed a tear or two,” she said. Making it to national level saw Precious undergo a rigorous judging process, which included beating stiff competition at state level. Although Ms Alsop was

hesitant to name her prizewinning budgie, she said he was special to her. “He’s just precious really, maybe we should call him Precious,” she said. “The judges described Precious’ crest as “perfect” and said he was ahead of the other birds “by a country mile.” Precious’ perfect crest wasn’t achieved without a little help from Mr Butcher, however. “We did put a little cornflower on his crest,” he admitted. - Laura Hurley

Success story

ORGANISERS have hailed last weekend’s Bendigo Writers Festival an outstanding success with record crowds taking part in the three-day event based in the city’s arts precinct. More than 6100 people flocked to the fourth BWF, including about 2500 students who took part in the annual Text Marks the Spot schools program on Friday, August 7. Box office receipts more than doubled for this year’s festival, with the addition of Bendigo’s stunning Ulumbarra Theatre proving to be a

huge success. For the first time, festival organisers sold out of day passes for both Saturday and Sunday, and key note sessions with leading literary figures and commentators, were well attended by an audience that has very quickly realised the Bendigo Writers Festival has already matured into a first rate event. The star studded list of speakers at this year’s Bendigo Writers festival included Tariq Ali, John Marsden, Latika Bourke, John Clarke, John Wolseley, Alice Pung,

Raimond Gaita, Brenda Niall, Bob Brown, Max Gillies, Matthew Evans, Emma Dean, Stefano de Pieri, Robert Dessaix and Robert Manne. An army of volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, backed by City of Greater Bendigo staff and key sponsorship from La Trobe University, helped ensure that once again, visitors to the Bendigo Writers Festival were treated to one of the best programs, held in the best venues, in one of the best cities in regional Australia.

Transport moves forward

A DEDICATED rail shuttle service between Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk has been mooted as one of the key long-term recommendations behind the state government’s Bendigo Metro Rail plan. The Bendigo Metro consultative community taskforce’s summary of recommendations was handed down to Public Transport minister Jacinta Allan last week, and will be implemented in three stages in line with service demand. More than 600 community submissions shaped the recommendations, with stage one of the $2 million plan to be enacted within a year. The $2m committed by the Labor government is dedicated to

V/Line and Metro focus of improvements stage one works, with no further money committed at this stage. The taskforce’s aim is for a 20-minute peak and 40-minute interpeak service to operate from Bendigo, Epsom, Eaglehawk and Kangaroo Flat, according to the report. The jewel in the crown of the recommendations summary is a shuttle service between Eaglehawk and Kangaroo Flat, or Bendigo, that connects with frequent services to Epsom and Melbourne. Stage one of the Bendigo Metro plan includes increased return services (five per day) to Epsom and Eaglehawk, all Bendigo line trains stopping at Kangaroo Flat and coordinating the Bendigo bus

review to allow for efficient connections between V/Line and bus services. Recommendations under stage two of the plan (implement-

the taskforce, said the recommendations would be forwarded to the state government for its consideration. “The Bendigo Metro Rail project received over 600 submissions from the community during consultation and feedback indicated strong support for this project,”

Ms Edwards said. “These recommendations were put forward after carefully considering the needs of the Bendigo community now and for the future.” Meanwhile, Bendigo was last week also announced as one of four regional areas set to benefit from the state government’s 24hour weekend public transport trial. Bendigo, along with Ballarat, Geelong and Traralgon will see buses leave Southern Cross station at around 2am on weekends from January 1, providing a mix of stopping and express services. The latest service to leave Southern Cross on the Bendigo line is currently the 11.45pm service that runs on Friday and Saturday nights.

People are saying it’s competition... they’ve got the monopoly open up for contractors, I could have tried to win the tender,” he said. He said it was likely the costs associated with dismantling the business would place Greenaway under further duress. “It’s going to cost us a fair bit of money to get out,” Mr Janssen said. “There’s a cut off point – it will likely be June 30, or before then.” Greenaway customers have rallied in support of the embattled service, with

a facebook post sharing the company’s concerns garnering hundreds of likes, shares and comments. Greenaway’s first customer, Mary Boromeo, said she had no need for the new organic waste service offered by the city. “As a consumer, I only want to pay for what I use,” she said. “I don’t want an organic waste collection as I currently recycle it to my small worm farm.” Council’s waste service manager Simon Clay said the city had been in discussions with Mr Janssen for around nine months, and were working with him to mitigate the costs associated with shutting down his business. “It became clear fairly early on (the service) would put Greenaway out of business,” Mr Clay said. “We’ve discussed the possibility of when we deliver 35,000 bins (next year) Greenaway may be able to provide a quote. “We’ve also been discussing buying Greenaway’s bins and putting them into our existing stock.” The trial organic waste service is be initially trialled to 2800 homes in Kennington, Strathdale, East Bendigo and North Bendigo by September 10. – Laura Hurley

THE City of Greater Bendigo has acknowledged concerns a local green waste kerbside collection service would be run out of business with the eventual introduction of an organic waste collection service offered by council. The council announced last week it would roll out a trial organic waste service in September, but informed local business Greenaway Bins several months ago of its probable collapse. Greenaway offers a fortnightly collection service for garden waste, however owner Anthony Janssen believes his business will no longer be viable with the likely introduction of a city-wide organics collection service to be introduced by council in July next year. The trial service aims to divert all organic material from landfill including food and garden waste. Mr Janssen said although the service Greenaway offers is slightly different to the council’s organic waste service, the future of his business remained uncertain. “We’ll definitely go out of business,” he said. “Ours is a voluntary service, however (council) will be rolling out their bins to everyone. “Some people are saying it’s competition – it’s not, they’ve got the monopoly.” Greenaway is Bendigo’s

Call for pool timetable By LAURA HURLEY

The Kangaroo Flat Community Enterprise (KFCE) is urging the City of Greater Bendigo to provide a timetable on the new stateof-the-art swimming pool set to be developed at the site of the leisure centre. After councillors voted in favour of the pool in June, KFCE president Jack Lyons said the community had yet to see a construction or delivery timetable. “It has been almost two months now since council approved the pool, and we haven’t seen a construction or delivery timetable,” Mr Lyons said. He said the Kangaroo Flat community had been full of praise for the council’s decision

to approve the pool, however he felt the lack of timetable was causing doubt amongst some elements of the community. “Council voted to go ahead with the pool whether it received federal funding or not. While we are prepared to work as hard as we can with council to get that funding, the community is telling us they want to start seeing action,” Mr Lyons said. “Our local schools are also saying they want to start including the pool complex in their long-term planning strategies. “On top of the $100,000 we have already committed, locals are starting to donate already to help us reach our promised $1 million mark. “However, there is a clear

message that more will donate once they see action. We fear a lack of a timetable is causing doubt among the community.” He said locals were keen to roll their sleeves up and begin the project once they had an indication about a timeline from council. “We just need to hear council’s starting pistol,” Mr Lyons said. Council’s City Futures director Stan Liacos said plans were under way to attract further capital investment in the pool, and physical construction could be expected to commence late this year or early 2016. “We appreciate the group’s patience,” Mr Liacos said. “However, it is a very big and

complex project and it’s important we look at putting it through a thorough process. “We are currently preparing documents to help us attract further capital investment.” Mr Liacos said council were also in the process of securing an operator to create detailed plans of the pool and leisure centre. “We’ll be seeking operator interest in the next two to three months to assist in finalising detailed designs parallel to that process,” he said. “All going well, we should be able to commence construction very late this year or early next year. “We are in a good positions because we already have town planning permit approval.”

Raising cash for Nepal A GROUP of passionate Bendigonians and the local Nepalese community are raising funds for the country’s earthquake appeal. Dungey Carter Ketterer employee Jenny Donaldson travelled to Nepal earlier this year when the earthquake hit, and upon returning back to Australia decided that she and her daughter would do something to help rebuild schools in the region. The night the pair arrived back in Bendigo, the local Nepalese community held a vigil that they attended and Jenny decided to join the fundraising efforts along with the Rotary Club of Bendigo and the AusNep Foundation. “We had been over there trekking then had gone on to white water rafting, waiting on the river bank when it happened,” she said. “Thankfully we were in a fairly safe spot at the moment of

raise around $25,000 so far and is aiming to raise more with a cocktail and auction night at the All Seasons on Saturday, August 29. AusNep Foundation’s Umesh Srestha said all were welcome to attend the cocktail night. “Initially our aim was to

raise $20,000 only, but when we started looking for the schools and collecting information from the ground we realised we needed more than $20,000,” he said. Tickets to the cocktail night are $50 and can be bought by calling Jenny Donaldson on 0409 484 391.

End of life top of agenda BENDIGO health experts have called for a community approach to end of life care, saying that planning for palliative care needs to take place well before patients present at hospital. Speaking on Wednesday as part of a series of regional hearings for a parliamentary inquiry into end of life choices, Bendigo Health’s advance care planning clinical lead doctor Jason Fletcher and clinical rehab and geriatric medicine director Dr Marc Budge advocated for earlier planning for terminal patients. Dr Fletcher said end of life planning was increasingly becoming an issue for healthcare professionals due to a lack of resources. “In my personal opinion, there are too many deaths in hospital,” he said. Dr Fletcher said about 88 per cent of deaths that occurred at Bendigo Hospital in 2014 were patients who were terminally ill. He attributed a lack of resources for community-based palliative care for this figure. “There’s too much of a focus on inhospital care and not enough on primary care,” Dr Fletcher said. Talking on assisted deaths for terminal patients, Dr Fletcher believed discussion about advanced care planning was often avoided due to the nature of the topic. “One of the problems with advanced care planning has is an association with euthanasia,” he said. “As a community and as a medical professional, we should have respect for patient autonomy.” He said in a small number of cases, he believed a medically assisted death would be appropriate. “The uptake of euthanasia is quite small,” Dr Fletcher said. Dr Budge told the enquiry there needed to be more framework on treating terminal patients with conditions other than cancer. “In the last 10 to 20 years, the number of those with non-cancer conditions is increased beyond those with cancer,” he said. “Increasingly, dementia is a focus.” He reiterated the importance of advanced care planning well before a patient is hospitalised. “It is a difficult discussion to have at times, particularly if you’re unwell,” Dr Budge said. “Most of this should be provided in the community.”

SHOW TIME: Les Lewis will be back after being a display winner for his first show last year. THE Annual Arms and Collectables Show returns next weekend. It’s a timely reminder as a winner from last year returns with his antique clocks. Les Lewis from Strathfieldsaye has a fascinating collection, what’s more, as well as collecting them he is also talented enough to breathe new life into old clocks to get them

ticking away again. This year there are more than 150 trade and display tables, and as it’s 100 years since the Anzac landings at Gallipoli, there is a special focus on militaria. “With displays like Les’ clocks adding a different flavour along with Joyce’s button collection and Eldred’s shearing collection, there’s plenty to

see,” the Golden City Collectors Association’s Sue Rawlings said. The show runs on Saturday and Sunday, August 23 and 24 at the Bendigo Major League Multisports complex, 1-3 Waterson Court, Golden Square. Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 3pm. Entry is $10 for a family and $5 for single.

Tough job for aged

WHEN the Weekly ran a story describing Neil Gemill’s plight some weeks ago, he was amazed at the response from the public. The burden of Mr Gemill’s song was that because he was a mature aged person it was hard for him to find employment. In his middle age, Mr Gemill looked around him and found that he had lost something that was vital to him – a job. His sense of having a place, a role in the world was taken from him. “When employment is taken away, you feel isolated and not connected to society. Work gives you a structure, you connect to people, talk to them,” he said. That mental illness and unemployment go hand-in-hand is a fact confirmed by former counsellor and chair of the RSL Welfare and Charity Committee, Paul Penno. “Long term unemployment leads to the same symptoms of depression,” he said. “And the two elements of depression are hopelessness and despair, that is exactly how people feel who can’t find work. “The government is talking about encouraging people to work until they are 70, but many jobs re-

NEW OUTLOOK: Neil Gemill. quire physical fitness and the other factor to take into account is that jobs, particularly in the manufacturing industry just aren’t there. I think the approach is pretty unrealistic.” With a view to helping others, Mr Gemill invited other people who were in a similar position to him to give him a ring. After the story ran Mr Gemill said he received more than 25 phone calls from men and women who were also in a similar plight. “I have been stopped in the street by people who want to express their sympathy and support,” he said.

Chris Hewitson

“I’m working with a couple of the people now and we are trying to set up an employment agency which is specifically aimed at helping mature people back into the workforce.” The only support for people older than 50 is through the Commonwealth government Restart program. Restart offers support to employers who employ and retain eligible job seekers who are 50-yearsof-age or older. However there are some catches. To be eligible you must have been unemployed and on income support for six months or more. These Centrelink payments include Newstart Allowance; Parenting Payment; Disability Support Pension; Bereavement Allowance; Widow Allowance; Carer Payment; Special Benefit; Partner Service Pensioners; War Widows Pension; Age Pension; Mature Age Partner Allowance; Wife Pension; Widows B Pension and Austudy. If an unemployed person who is aged more than 50 is not on any of the above payments they cannot qualify for Restart. You can ring Neil on 0417 144 280. THIRTY-EIGHT non-profit organisations will share in about $1.131 million over three years as part of the City of Greater Bendigo’s inaugural Partnership Grants Program. The successful applicants will share in the funding, with $377,400 to be allocated in the first year, $377,250 in the second year and $377,000 in the third year. Mayor Peter Cox said the funding was important in fostering positive partnerships between council and community groups. “It’s very important to me how we develop partnerships with community organisations,” Cr Cox said. “There is a great benefit for organisations themselves – there’s a great advantage for the volunteers in the groups and those advantages are seen throughout the community.” He said the successful applicants had been selected by

Film stars stalk in to the city He terrified audiences as Mick Taylor in Wolf Creek, and now seminal Australian actor John Jarratt has turned his hand to directing in a new dark comedy, StalkHer, due out in cinemas later this month. Visiting Bendigo on Tuesday with co-star Kaarin Fairfax, the pair are embarking on a national tour to promote the film, focussing on regional centres. Fairfax described the film as a “bit of a rollercoaster ride”. “It’s an inappropriate romantic thriller with some laughs, some twists,” she said. “It’s a story of a man and a woman. We don’t really know at the beginning of the film – and through the film – what the hell’s going on, and that’s part of the fun. “We like to say passion is complicated…. It will certainly keep you guessing in terms of trying to work out what’s happening.” StalkHer is the tale of two people destined for each other, yet destined to be each other’s demise. Offering raw dialogue and characters that will make you laugh at all the wrong things, it is a gritty battle of the sexes with verbal and physical blows coming thick and fast. Jarratt stepped up as both actor and director for the film, and worked collaboratively with Fairfax in the director’s role when he was (literally) tied up. “Editing was new to me, that’s where I was a greenhorn. And being tied to a chair for 90 per cent of the film, it was pretty hard to get to the monitor, so it’s probably not the best choice of films for a directorial debut,” he said.

sist them in accessing other forms of funding. Bendigo Neighbourhood Hub was one of the 38 recipients, and co-ordinator Angelique Whitehouse said the funding would assist the organisation in offering their services to more people. “This funding gives us the opportunity to offer the increased amount of amount of people,” Ms Whitehouse said. “It’s positive that council is recognising us, and recognises the need for these sort of services.” Sedgwick Public Hall also received funding through the program. Committee member Gaelle Broad said the money would be put towards the development of the hall. “It will be used for the designs to redevelop the hall,” Ms Broad said. “These will include all access toilets, an expansion to the hall and wooden decking.”

DOUBLE ACT: John Jarratt and Kaarin Fairfax in Bendigo to promote their new film. Photo: bill conroy “So I got Kaarin to step in, we worked together well.” He described the film as a “good, gritty film” along the likes of A Streetcar Named Desire and The War of the Roses. “We wanted some kind of battle in a house or some room. Two blokes or a bloke and a woman and I would be one of them,” Jarratt said. The soundtrack includes tracks from the likes of the Skyhooks, Sarah Blasko and Nick Cave, and also features Mr Jarratt’s song debut

Killer in Me and the forthcoming single performed by Ms Fairfax’s two daughters, Maddy and Memphis Kelly, the title track StalkHer. Fairfax, who was visiting Bendigo for the first time, said she was in awe of the city’s unique architecture. “Weirdly, I have never been to Bendigo before and I feel kind of embarrassed that I haven’t because it’s so beautiful,” she said. “We were driving in late (Monday) night and I got in about two. I said to John I just want to walk

around and look at all the architecture, it’s so glorious.” Jarratt had visited the area four years ago when he starred in The Sum of Us. “I was in Bendigo in 2011, and I did a some theatre. The Capital is a fantastic building, and that was my first time in Bendigo and man, I was so fascinated,” he said. “To see the buildings, these fantastic, beautifully, wonderfully historic buildings. Wow.” StalkHer will be released in cinemas on August 27.

Hampers help

TWO year 12 students from Bendigo Senior Secondary College are putting back into the community, organising hampers for those affected by family violence. Students Mitchell Landry and Tamika Berger, both 17, decided to fundraise for the Centre for Non-Violence as part of a community project the pair are studying at school. Tamika said they chose the Centre for Non-Violence due to the heightened attention domestic violence had received this year, following public hearings into the Royal Commission into Family Violence beginning last month. “We chose this issue and

researched a local organisation and found the Centre for Non-Violence,” Tamika said. “On Facebook we put up a post for donations, and people from the community have been really generous.” The care packages include non-perishable food items and personal care and hygiene products. Radius Disability Care clients donated items for the packages, after team leader Ann Heenam saw the appeal for donations on facebook. “I saw it on social media and thought what a lovely idea,” Ms Heenam said. “We’re a very community minded organisation and like to put back into worthwhile projects.”

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, August 14, 2015

The pair also ran a sausage sizzle at the Eaglehawk IGA to further fundraise for the cause, with donations from Coles Bendigo, Woolworths, Campbells Cash and Carry, Leonards Bendigo and Strathdale IGA. “We’d like to thank all the businesses that donated,” Mitchell said. Mitchell and Tamika received enough donations for about 60 packages, which will be donated to the Centre for Non Violence for individuals and families at risk and in need. VICROADS will reduce the speed at two key locations along the Calder on the outskirts of Bendigo, to reduce the risk and severity of crashes. Regional director Mal Kersting said speed limit reductions near Maiden Gully and at the Fogarty’s Gap Road intersection would be implemented as an immediate road safety measure. “Along Marong Road (Calder Higwhay), between the outskirts of Bendigo and Maiden Gully, we will be reducing the speed from the current 90 kilometres per hour to 80km/h,” he said. “There has been quite a lot of development along that section of road, which means increased traffic volumes and busier intersections. “While it mightn’t

seem like a big change, it can mean a reduction in the likelihood and severity of crashes. “We will also be reducing the speed limit along the Calder from 100km/h to 80km/h through the Fogarty’s Gap intersection, as figures are showing us far too many people are still crashing at high speeds. “The speed limit reduction here is an immediate measure we can take to improve conditions in the short term, but we will continue to monitor safety through this intersection.” The decision to lower speed limits at both locations has also been based on feedback from the community, council and Victoria Police. Crews will install the changed speed zones in the coming fortnight.

Show will be a gem By LAURA HURLEY

All that sparkles and shines will be out on show at the 38th Bendigo Gem Club Expo, running on September 12 and 13. The new look expo has moved from its former location at Kangaroo Flat to Junortoun, and despite the change in location club members predict the event will be bigger and better than ever. The expo will include over 30 stalls where visitors can buy gemstones, minerals, silver, gold and jewellery making and lapidary supplies. This year’s expo will also feature some new gold-themed additions including metal detecting and gold panning activities, a gold nugget replica display and sluicing demonstrations. Jewellery making demonstrations will be featured on

Help plan the future of public transport in Loddon-Mallee The State Government invites you to help shape the future of public transport in regional Victoria. The Regional Network Development Plan will be built from your ideas about what your local community and region needs from public transport. This long-term plan will take into account the different needs of individual communities and deliver a regional public transport network where train, coach and bus services work together to get people where they need to go.

Life member Charlie Bock will also exhibit his intricate handmade gemstone sculptures, which include local

landmarks such as the Cathedral, Bendigo Tramways tram, Joss House and the Alexandra Fountain. Bendigo Gem Club member Andie Downing said the expo functioned as the club’s yearly fundraiser. “People come and visit from all over Australia,” Ms Downing said. “Anyone who is interested in rocks, gem stones, prospecting, jewellery making is welcome – we’ve got something for everyone.” Mr Bock also welcomed visitors from far and wide to the expo, saying the funds would go towards expanding the range of equipment the club had. “It’ll keep the club running for the rest of the year,” he said. Admission is $6 per person, and under-16s get in free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Ultrasound gift for East Timor

Workshops will be held around the Loddon-Mallee region in August, commencing in Swan Hill. Come along and get involved in planning the future of public transport.

MEDICAL facilites in East Timor are set for a boost with the donation of three ultrasound machines. High St Xray recently upgraded the machines in the clinic and asked Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee if they would like to donate the machines to Maubisse Hospital, in Timor Leste. The three Siemens ultrasound machines were recently refurbished ready to be shipped to East Timor Their prime use will be in pregnancy surveillance, with the district having 60,000 births per year. The Carmelite sisters now run a pre-birth home for the women to encourage them to attend the hospital for birth. Family size averages 10 to 12 children, so the potential is considerable.

ONE of the world’s largest and strongest community based organisations will celebrate 90 years of service to the Bendigo community next weekend. Rotary has a long and strong history in the Bendigo area, dating back to 1925, when the then Bendigo mayor, councillor Ernest Vains along with 20 other distinguished Bendigo businessmen, met at the Town Hall and the Rotary Club of Bendigo was formed. Founding club members included Bendigo icons such as the Leggo, Guidice, Bolton, Levy and Lansell families. Meetings were originally held at the Favaloro Café in Pall Mall and Rotary has not looked back, and it’s interesting to note that back in the early days, meetings were actually broadcast live on local radio. There are now seven Rotary clubs in Bendigo and all continue to do amazing work both locally and internationally. In celebration of the 90 years since

Rotary to come along and enjoy a great night of celebration. Tickets are available at the Capital Theatre box office (www.gotix.com.au) and more information is also available on the Rotary Club of Bendigo’s facebook page and website.

Writers on form Another hugely successful Bendigo Writers Festival has taken place showcasing writers, interviewers and many others. This shows once again the diversity of Bendigo’s historic buildings along with contemporaries. It was so good to see attendees enjoying all the businesses and attributes Bendigo has to offer. I was lucky enough to speak to keynote speaker Tariq Ali on the Sunday at the Wine Bank and he commented on the beautiful buildings and said it was so quiet and how lucky I was to live here, to which I agreed. There are not enough superlatives to say about artistic director Rosemary Sorensen and her committee headed up by councillor Rod Fyffe for the magnificent array of speakers and events condensed into a three-day programme. To have such variety there was absolutely something for everyone. My highlights were the discussion between academic Robert Manne and Tariq Ali which was a thought provoking session which hit an accord with the very appreciative audience. Also for the first time showcasing the Ulumbarra Theatre which was a huge hit with the public. This new theatre is just another fantastic asset and puts Bendigo on the world stage. I was very grateful to Rosemary for inviting me to moderate the Sunday afternoon session at the beautiful Capital Theatre between good friends Passing Clouds’ winemaker Graeme Leith and Mildura’s renowned restauranteur Stefano de Pieri. It was fantastic to follow Graeme’s difficult journey of establishing his winery along with his travels and many other interesting life experiences. I also loved Stefano’s political experiences and his passion for Mildura, music and cooking. Well done to all involved as this festival just keeps getting better and bigger as I’m sure the attendances will attest. Of course events like this don’t happen without a lot of hard work by the organisers and major sponsors such as the City of Greater Bendigo, La Trobe University, the Schaller Studio and many other including ABC 91.1 and the Bendigo Weekly who helped with its conception and continue to support this and many other major events in this area. Already looking forward to next year’s event. Keith Sutherland, Bendigo

End of the line for North Bendigo school Sadly the final end has come for the North Bendigo Primary School which, after 137 valuable years of teaching students, was closed down supposedly for the best outcome for staff and students under the banner of the Bendigo Education Plan, by the then regional director Ron Lake. Over the past few days heavy equipment moved onto the site and began the demolition of the school to a pile of rubble. Sadly the much heralded Bendigo Education Plan was to revise the education system to provide better outcomes for staff and students – other than the rebuilding of some schools. This did not eventuate and we have witnessed a decline in education standards and results, staff have been put under enormous stress levels and pressures. More paperwork, wasted time on computers ticking boxes trying to get through all the changes leaving them less time to prepare lesson plans and classroom activities. This was aided by the introduction of the Ultranet that was also going to be the best thing since sliced bread, with the whole system crashing very early on the first day of operation. This, along with the recent acknowledgement of the failure of the Naplan testing, one wonders where our future is heading given the blunders that have been made by supposedly experienced and knowledgeable leaders in the education department. They have deprived staff and students of funds to deliver a good education outcome for all. It was interesting the building had been sitting vacant for about four years, then quietly demolishers moved in with nothing being said. The facility could have been used for aged care, respite facilities, there are any number of things that it could have been used for. What is going to happen the vacant site once it is totally cleared of all debris? Those who have been associated with the demise of education standards in this region should hang their heads in shame for allowing this to happen. Ivan Kitt, Bendigo

try has called for Australia to move towards an increasing reliance on GST and land taxes because they claim it would increase productivity and housing affordability and supply (Bendigo Weekly, August 7). They also claim that stamp duties reduce labour mobility and productivity by locking people into a certain location. While there may be some truth in this position, this view is an incomplete and inadequate look at taxation in Australia. How about the view that an increase in GST will hit lower and middle income earners because they have to spend a higher proportion of their income on non-discretionary goods and services. How about the view that surging house prices reduces the productivity of this country, limits the life choices of young people, restricts labour mobility and locks people into a mountain of debt and stress that could last a lifetime. These surging prices also discourage people who have purchased homes in rural areas, like Bendigo, from moving to capital cities unless they want to take on massive debt. How about the view that the runaway house prices in our capital cities are partly fuelled by negative gearing, foreign investment, the 50 per cent tax break given to income from capital gains and the

generous treatment of capital gains on the family home. The taxation system does need to be reviewed, but the heart of this review should be the impact the system has on people. The current system skews tax breaks towards people who are able to afford to take up investment opportunities and large powerful companies that can minimise their tax to almost nothing. Sorry, but simplistic taxation solutions, like increasing the GST and land taxes without a detailed discussion on the fairness and long-term social impact of our taxation system, simply does not cut it. ART ON THE STREETS

Metro hits the mark THE Bendigo Metro Rail project was a cornerstone of the now government’s local election strategy in the lead up to last year’s November 29 decider. And as work on the project continues, more than 600 submissions from the community form part of a report handed to Public Transport minister Jacinta Allan last Friday. That in itself is a tangible indicator of how much interest there is in this project, and just how important it is for the taskforce charged with the task of implementing the Bendigo Metro project to get it right. Hopefully, such a high level of community participation will provide a solid foundation for proving up the next stages of the plan, and overall, for even better standards of service than the one Bendigonians enjoy now. While in opposition, Labor pledged $2 million towards the first stage of the Bendigo Metro project, but the project will likely require more than this to meet the soaring demand from commuters wanting to take advantage of improvements to public transport at a local level. Improvements to car parking

BendigoWeekly

Editorial Comment at suburban railway stations in Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk is desperately needed, a circumstance no one denies, and one everyone looks forward to being addressed. So any train pain Bendigo might experience in the short term, will hopefully, and ultimately, prove to be train gain. That’s the view of architects and supporters of the Bendigo Metro project being developed for the Bendigo community with a renewed focus on increased frequency of services and a better utilisation of suburban stations at Eaglehawk, Epsom and Kangaroo Flat. Bendigo needs to keep pace with public transport options in other regional centres, or risk falling behind. The government appears to have recognised this, and percep-

tions about public transport have shifted dramatically in the past decade or so. The introduction of fast trains on the Bendigo corridor has no doubt contributed to the massive increase in patronage on V/Line trains, and has brought Melbourne much closer to Bendigo. The same can not yet be said about buses, but if the state government and City of Greater Bendigo have their way, more of us will be travelling on buses much more frequently in the years to come. That’s why initiatives such as the Bendigo Metro project are so important. Their ability to have such a dramatic impact on the way locals live their lives and go about their daily business cannot be understated. A sustainable city, something Bendigo continually strives to be, requires change, and for more emphasis on walking and cycling as well. Bendigo does have a very heavy reliance on the car, something no one expects to completely eliminate, but if the experts manage to get it right with the Bendigo Metro project, even this might just change.

opinion By STEVE KENDALL

I HAVE never been one for flying the rainbow flag, for no other reason than people in the know having been doing a better job. But now I feel it’s time to throw my hat into the ring on marriage equality. Here we are in 2015 and Australia is still unsure about marriage equality. Figures I have seen bandied around suggest about 70 per cent of Australians either don’t care or see no reason not to have marriage equality. This is a majority. Tony Abbott as prime minister is heading his party away from a conscience vote in parliament. A conscience vote would allow members of the government to decide for themselves how to vote instead of being glued to the party line. He has even gone so far to say he will sack ministers who vote differently from him.

NEWS • 19

www.bendigoweekly.com.au

Mr Abbott does not like the idea of marriage equality, therefore his loyal followers will be stopped from allowing this basic change. Mr Abbott also says it needs a change in the constitution to redefine marriage. This is untrue, as the Commonwealth government is charged with the right and ability.

love each other who would like to be recognised equally in the eyes of the law and by others. If you doubt or do not believe it’s possible to love someone of your own sex you are wrong. That some people want to take it further is their business, and they should be equal in that choice. How would you feel if

What business is it of yours if someone has a different leaning to you? Legislative powers of the Parliament section 51 XXI clearly states it is part of the power of the government of the day. Therefore this whole matter could be resolved in parliament by a show of hands. But it needs the freedom of MPs to vote how they feel, not how they are led. Marriage equality is simply that. A couple who

your loved family member told you they were gay? Would you throw them out or hate them? If you say yes, the problem is with you, not them. There seems to be an outcry from some about the concept of man and man and woman on woman. What business is it of yours if someone has a different leaning to you? It’s not compulsory to be homosexual, it’s not a

life choice, it’s just the way it is, and the sooner we accept that and move on the better. Let’s face it, what difference would it make to any of us? Would the world shake, would traffic drive on the wrong side of the road? No, it would make no difference except make people happy and feel equal. Is that so wrong? For some reason, people object to this most strongly, and the reason I am writing is to make you think does it really matter to you? If you are for marriage equality or do not care either way, you should not let the thoughts of a backward looking government hold up the will of the people, and that will appears to be for marriage equality in Australia. Mr Abbott’s stance is one of an Australia which is lacking in understanding for the rights and thoughts of its people, and it’s time for change.

A HIGHLIGHT of the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre is the street facade which features two expanses of plate glass. This vast area was designed to function as a public exhibition space. In 2011 La Trobe University and the City of Greater Bendigo entered into a partnership which enabled the facade image to become part of the VAC’s exhibition program. The national competition offers an opportunity for artists to exhibit on the VAC facade for two years. The winner of the 2015-17 Facade Project competition will be announced at 6pm on Thursday, at an event where the new facade image will be unveiled by mayor Cr Peter Cox and La Trobe University vice-chancellor John Dewar. The winning artist will also be in attendance.

The six-member advisory committee will be chaired by Member for Yuroke Ros Spence and is made up of councillors Mary Delahunty and David Clark, former local government chief executives Kathy Alexander

This year the event also forms part of the Victorian HPV Series as the round three event, with more than 85 vehicles expected to confirm the event’s increasing popularity with young and old.

Finding room for a festival With the general rush, it all was a bit much for sleepy Nick

Wine, food and heritage T

HAT great times were had at the Bendigo Writers Festival. Old Nick from the office went along and despite the talent on show just used events in the Capital for a snooze in the dark. So if you were disturbed by a grey-haired beardy snoring, please let me apologise on his behalf. Seems snoozing wasn’t the only trick he played over the weekend. He had a real seniors moment. Obviously staggering around in a post nap haze he seated himself for a session, only to discover he was in the wrong location. For those who have not attended, the writers festival is run in many locations at the same time, so you have to chose your preference and move to the right room. Now, as an indicator I went to eight sessions, including the one I presented, and I managed to get to all eight early and in the correct spot. Anyway, Nick, gentleman that he is, was too polite to

move, so sat through the rest of the performance. Though this is fine, he missed the one he wanted to see and it will never be repeated. I don’t know whether he had been to the pub or forgot to take his tablets, but the end result is clear. Silly old bugger. While I was sharing this around the office in my friendly way, I discovered somebody else was delayed between sessions and had rushed in to find themselves in the wrong room. Though I am not game to name the person involved, he really should know better. There was an element of

good samaritan in his delay, but never let the truth get in the way of a good story. The event was one of those times where you really don’t have time to stop and chat. I freelanced a bit, very rarely sitting with anyone I knew, instead I crossed paths with many in the walk to the next event. People who I had not seen for weeks were bumped into three, four or five times a day on the Capital steps or crossing the road. I am sure some took the chance to dodge me because they were pretending to rush to the next event.

If watched from afar session changeover time would look like a busy ants’ nest centred on the Capital, streams of people heading in all directions for a frantic 10 minutes, only to subside into peace for the next hour. The whole event was marvellous, and I am already planning ahead for next year. Well done to all involved. Rosemary you’re a gem (yes, I would like to present again), Lucy, thanks for offering to share your crab, Fleur yes, it’s a shame the bar shut and Clare I hope you’ll be very happy together. - Steve Kendall Twitter@stevekendall1

OMING off the launch of their debut EP earlier this year, Bendigo band Jack And The Kids will support Melbourne indie rockers Fierce Mild at Castlemaine’s Bridge Hotel next Friday. The four piece, made up of frontman Jack Kennedy, Matt Thornton, Lachy Prest and Braden Geyer, made a strong statement in releasing their Treasures EP in April this year. Having supported the likes of Snakadaktal and Kite String Tangle in a pair of 2014 gigs, Jack And The Kids will play their Castlemaine show

next Friday, August 21. “We are really pumped to be playing with Fierce Mild,” Kennedy, the band’s frontman, said. “They got in touch with us a couple of months ago and asked us if we would be keen to play and have been looking forward to it ever since. “2015 has been a very busy year for us so far. It was great to get the EP finished off early in the new year. “This meant we could focus on playing some shows which is what we love doing most.”

Kennedy lists the group’s influences as the likes of The Jezabels, Jimmy Eat World, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver/Volcano Choir) and The Temper Trap. Playing songs off the Treasures EP as well as their debut single Dear George, Jack And The Kids are an up-andcoming group to keep on your radar. Next Friday’s gig at the Bridge Hotel starts at 8pm. The Treaures EP is available from iTunes, Spotify and Google Play, as well as signed copies available through Bandcamp.

Tales of the high life M

ICHAEL Veitch’s life-long obsession with the aircraft of World War II led him to conclude that every single person who flew, or flew in them, has at least one extraordinary story to tell. With most of these veterans at least in their 80s, he knew that it was a matter of urgency to find them now, before their personal stories disappear forever. Over the course of a year, Veitch interviewed more than 50 former aircrew across Australia, many of whom had never spoken about their experiences before, even to their families. Now, three books of memories in, Veitch is taking their stories on tour, including to Bendigo in October. Flak is a collection of vivid, unforgettable stories from RAAF veterans about their experiences of combat in World War II. “There is no real explanation to why I am so interested in aircraft and the men who flew them,” Veitch said. “I used to make Airfix kits as a kid, and was always interested in them.” Veitch was approached by a friend who was writing a book about actor and former Spitfire pilot Bud Tingwall. “He knew I had knowledge about aircraft so I explained to him about Mk9s and 20mm cannon, given him the technical background to the book,” Veitch said. “Then I thought I could do this myself.” The third book Heroes of the Skies is published this year and

MICHAEL VEITCH

continues the personal stories of air crew . Veitch’s stage show is an account of the strange, sometimes obsessive journey of the author himself, as he explores a passion held since childhood. But it also tracks the personal tales of those men.

“I tell the stories as they were told to me,” Veitch said. “They are told by men in their 80s and 90s and so it is that style I use. “Unfortunately some of the men I interviewed have since died, so my show is keeping their stories alive.”

Heroes of the Skies is published by Penguin, out now. Flak is at the Engine Room, 58 View Street, Bendigo at 8pm on Tuesday, October 20. For tickets phone 5434 6100 or email box.office@bendigo.vic. gov.au – Steve Kendall

One for heroes A

New film focus for Chloe B

ENDIGO Senior Secondary College student Chloe White showcased her filmmaking talents when she participated in the recent Hothouse program at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne. Chloe was one of 10 students from across the state to be selected for the week-long intensive program, after submitting a two-minute piece explaining why she wanted to be a part of the program. That, along with a recent music video she created, was enough to see the talented student selected to gain invaluable skills and industry experience with state of the art equipment in the state’s capital. The 10 students spent the week collaborating to create a five-minute documentary, developing their filmmaking skills including idea development and research, scripting, interviewing, location shooting, editing,

and post-production. “It was really exciting to work on a project with a group of like-minded, creative people. We clicked as a group, which made the whole experience even better,” Chloe said. “Our documentary was about the relevance of public radio. We visited Melbourne radio stations, spoke to all the people involved; and even did vox pops in the street.” This year, Chloe and the nine other participants got the opportunity to work alongside experienced documentary filmmakers Anna Helme, Atalanti Dionysus and Paul Morton. “Working with all that equipment has given me an incredible insight into the industry – using boom mics, the latest cameras, allocating all those jobs that need to happen behind the scenes – and having a mentor like Anna Helme was an experience I’ll never forget,” Chloe said. - Joel Peterson

SELFIE with a superhero is just one of the many attractions planned at St Therese’s Primary School fete this Sunday. Deputy Principal Margaret Brohm said the identity of the superhero is under wraps so it will be a big surprise on the day. “We will have a special appearance by a superhero so children and their families will have the opportunity to have a photo. I know it will create a lot of excitement on the day,” she said. Other fun activities for the family include a giant slide, a ride that tests balance and stamina and a jumping castle. A variety of stalls selling plants and produce, crafts, pre-loved clothing, trash and treasure are also lined up for the day as well as the popular display of home-made gourmet cakes. Raffle prizes including a $1000 travel voucher and a $750 tool chest are up for grabs. Tickets are available at St Therese’s school reception and after services at St Therese’s Church. Mrs Brohm said the fete is a great way to bring the school, the parish and the local community together. It is also the school’s biggest fundraiser for the year and money raised will go towards a new covered outdoor learning area for concerts, assembly and sporting activities. “An area outdoors provides

USIC program students will take to the Ulumbarra stage hoping to be the next Bendigo Senior Secondary College Musician of the Year. BSSC’s Matt Pankhurst says this year’s group of 20 young musicians and vocalists are all incredibly talented and will guarantee a great night’s entertainment for every musical taste. “We’ve got everything from blues guitar, drums, trombone and tuba, to violins, cellos, and three very different vocalists,” he said. “Our alto saxophonist, Harry Godfrey is a Junior Victorian Champion, while Tuba player Aidan Purdy recently won the Under-19 National Band Championship.

“Musical styles vary from classical to jazz, and contemporary art music. For the first time we’re holding the event at the Ulumbarra Theatre – so audience members are in for a treat.” Musicians will be attempting to win-over internationally renowned conductor and trombonist Monte Mumford who will judge the performers and choose a winner. As well as the major award for Musician of the Year, there will also be awards for excellence in performance, and the crowd’s favourite – the Audience Choice Award. Enjoy a free night of quality entertainment at the finest concert venue in regional Victoria. The show is on Wednesday, August 19 at 7pm.

HANNON Bourne loved playing at the Old Church on the Hill so much in June that he’s returning on Saturday. He’s recording a solo acoustic album in front of a live crowd, and will be part of a very special evening, with special guests Alister Turrill plus Jarrod Shaw and Sarah Wilkinson. Bendigo Blues and Roots festival director Colin Thompson said Bourne is one of the most remarkable guitarists Australia has produced. “He will mesmerise with his dark and honest song-writing, not to mention his remarkable command of the guitar and the sound-scapes he creates for a live audience to soak in,” Thompson said. “Also on show will be Alister Turrill, whose playing style blends a true form of blues with complex song writing seldom seen in someone so young, and Jarrod Shaw, a

self-taught blues and roots musician with a unique guitar style. Thompson said he has often been described as having a voice that belies his years. Sarah Wilkinson is a 21-year-old musician and has been playing in the area for several years. She has been writing since the age of 13 and has won several awards including

La Trobe students have the Write Idea I

Using our VIP status we were able to attend Friday’s Text Marks the Spot program. It was here that, not only did I have my first author sighting, but I also joined the hundreds of school children in getting my 2006 copy of Tomorrow, When the War Began signed by John Marsden. Here, I decided, was my research project – children’s authors and the engagement of kids in the festival. I would interview students on their feelings about being at the festival. “It’s a dream come true,” one bright-eyed girl said. “It’s the best day of my life,” said another, with a smile spreading from cheek to cheek. Knowing nothing about budgets, at least one student was disappointed with the guest list, stating “I wish J K Rowling was here, I’m a big Harry

T was a horrible start to the day. I was running late, had no time to buy coffee, and no idea what to expect from the class I was walking into. On Wednesday I had travelled from Melbourne to Bendigo to attend an intensive class that would run until the following Monday. Created and run by senior lecturer Sue Gillett, Writers in Action is a La Trobe University subject that embeds students into the Bendigo Writers Festival as reporters and researchers. There was no backing out now – I’d paid for accommodation. I took my seat. A sense of excitement was quickly ignited in the students around me, and I knew I was in the right place. What followed during the next few days was an unforgettable experience.

Potter fan”. Throughout the festival a select number of authors attended exclusive Writers in Action sessions. These VIP activities reinforced the uniqueness of this wonderful subject, but also deepened the experience of the whole weekend by allowing us to have hours of questions answered by inspiring professional writers and industry experts. The Bendigo Writers Festival itself was an amazing experience. I was a novice festival-goer and had no expectations as to how the subject would affect me. However, through the collective energy of my new friends, the Writers in Action, paired with the sincerity of authors who gave us advice and took the time to answer our inquiries, I have left Bendigo with a new-found sense of confidence. - Lauren Smith

MONG the many different personalities associated with the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders was a man whose father, William Bradley, had a watchmaking and jewellery business in Pall Mall. William Bradley’s shop was next to Temple Court, located in the block between Williamson and Bull streets. William Bradley’s business was highly respected and well patronised by the public, by 1913 he was celebrating his 90th birthday, quite an achievement at that time. William’s son, Walter Henry Bradley joined his father in the business and the firm became known as Wm Bradley and son. By 1873 William Bradley had moved his business to what was then an even more strategic location, 7 Pall Mall, this being only two doors from the then famous Beehive Stores. The Beehive also had within its walls the local stock exchange, which attracted huge crowds of share speculators. There was also a branch of the Bradley business at his first location in High Street. Walter H Bradley was acknowledged as being part of the business in the 1880s as from that time onward the advertising stated Wm Bradley and son. By 1890 however, advertising read “Repairs to watches, clocks, jewellery, gilding, electric plating, engraving, Beehive Watch and Jewellery Company, Jewellery made to order, W H Bradley manager, late W Bradley and son”. Walter H Bradley was also an active member of the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders which as mentioned previously started in 1878. One of the many charitable causes for which the Serenaders performed was for a widow, Margaret Robbins, and

her five children. The concert being held in March 1883 at the Masonic Hall in View Street, now known as the Capital. Margaret Robbins lived at Allingham Street in Golden Square, her late husband William Henry Robbins had worked at the New Chum Consolidated Mine. This mine was located on the New Chum Reef some 300 metres south from the gates of Fortuna. It was at this mine where Mr Robbins had an accident that led to his death some 28 months before the mentioned concert. Mr Robbins had been working in the mine some 200 metres underground, he was extracting quartz from a reef, the void created became a large stope. Mr Robbins struck a large piece of quartz in order to break it up so it could then be loaded into the ore truck and hauled to the surface for crushing in the mine’s 30-head battery. A small, exceptionally sharp piece of the quartz flew off the block and lodged in the soft of William Robbins’ neck. Only a small wound could be seen on the surface, it was dressed by Dr Eadie to stem the blood flow. Well bandaged, Mr Robbins then walked home. Later that same evening he passed away, at the subsequent inquest it was found that the quartz sliver had cut through some major blood vessels and the internal bleeding was the cause of death some six hours after the accident. Even though upon the passing of her husband Margaret Robbins received £40 in compensation, by the time she had paid for the funeral there was only a small amount left. The five children were all under the age of 10, so the remaining compensation money did not last long. Mrs Robbins became destitute in every sense of the word.

Walking the Nile Levison Wood Simon & Schuster

T

HERE’S a reason even the most adventurous expeditioners don’t usually attempt to walk the length of the world’s longest river – in fact, there are multiple reasons, all exceedingly sound, as army-officer-turned-explorer Levison Wood knew when he fixed his sights on doing just that. In December 2013 Wood (a veteran of service with the British Parachute Regiment in Afghanistan) set out to become the first person to follow the Nile entirely on foot from its burbling headwaters in the highlands of Rwanda to the silty Egyptian delta on the Mediterranean coast. Wood’s journey – to be filmed in part for a television documentary series – would see him traverse six of Africa’s most challenging countries, beginning with Rwanda and including Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan and Sudan. The 6839-kilometre slog would pass through some of the least pleasant hiking terrain imaginable – slippery rainforests, crocodile-ridden marshlands, enervatingly humid savannah, parched sand dunes – all the while in an atmosphere that ranged from barely contained intertribal ethnic unrest to outright civil war. Into the bargain, the timing of his journey was such

FOR A GOOD CAUSE: Walter Henry Bradley as a Prima Donna. There was a large billing for the charitable concert held in early March 1883 to raise money for the Robbins family. However, the organisers of the concert were somewhat disappointed that not all the artists who had promised their services showed up. As a result those that were present to display their talents were called upon to perform extra numbers in order to fill the gaps in the program. Walter Henry Bradley and other Ethiopian Serenaders also responded to render further items to patch over the holes left by the missing artistes. One of Bradley’s roles was as a female character and here you can see the results of his cross-dressing.

that he would need to cross a portion of the Sahara Desert at the height of summer – a feat rarely attempted by the most hardened nomadic camel herders, let alone Brits already weary and undernourished after months on the move. His only support would be occasional porters enlisted along the way. In Walking the Nile, Wood’s experiences are documented in his own words and photographs, carrying readers with him and his minuscule party as they push ever northwards. He details the raw emotional extremes of his exploits: the anxiety borne of the likelihood that men whose hands he shakes have murdered their neighbours, the joys of adopting an abandoned baby monkey, the devastation of losing a travelling companion to heatstroke and the mateship cemented by trudging for weeks at a time in semi-silence.

Fishing slows as winter bites By NICK ATYEO

S

IXTEEN members of the Bendigo Legion Angling Club weathered a weekend of near record low temperatures last month at Lake Eildon for 18 brown trout. The expected heavy rain thankfully never eventuated with anglers only having to endure the occasional light shower. Tim Ripper once again took his recently discovered trout catching skills to a new level with the largest creel for the trip with a bag of four trout. Ford fenders in front of a trolled scrub-worm at five metres off a down rigger accounted for the majority of Tim’s fish. Wayne Symons, Mick O’Connor, John Telford and his son-in-law Saul Wickham also troubled the statistician with multiple catches leaving the remaining dozen anglers with only a couple of trout between them. The fifth round of the 2015 Central Vic Lure Casters Super

Series was also held last month on the Loddon River at Bridgewater with 66 keen anglers and once again anglers had to endure colder than average conditions for seven fish. Paul Thomas landed the largest Murray cod for the round with a 58.5 centimetre fish as well as a 56cm specimen giving him first place overall as well as largest fish of the round. Second place went to Brenton Smith with a golden perch and redfin followed by Justin Rees with a 41cm golden perch. CVLCSS organisers will be hoping for a better ratio of fish to anglers with their final round at Lake Mulwala on Sunday, August 30 at Kyffens Reserve. For more details visit www.cvlcss.com Members of the BLAC will also be hoping for plenty of action when they return to View Bank on the Edward River just north of Deniliquin for the President’s Cup in a fortnight. Hopefully water levels will have risen and stabilised giving anglers their last chance to catch

a Murray cod before the season ends at the start of September. It didn’t take long for Ballista Lure’s James Daintan to get the attention of anglers at this month’s BLAC meeting as guest speaker. James has been developing and importing his distinctive lures since 2009, with a range of lures featuring a flashing LED that activates when submerged. Ballista’s range of lures that now include surface poppers and

crawlers, along with a range of diving lures suitable for Murray cod and golden perch as well lures for barramundi, bass and a range of salt water species. Fisheries Victoria have liberated a record number of 250,000 golden perch fingerlings into Lake Eildon this year eclipsing their previous biggest total of 233,500 in 2009. As golden perch do not breed in enclosed waterways such as lakes, constant stocking is the

only way to maintain numbers. Last summer more than two million fingerlings native fish were released into more than 90 Victorian lakes and rivers. Fish stocking is funded by fishing licence fees and the State Government’s Target One Million plan, most fish were golden perch and Murray cod with smaller numbers of Australian bass, estuary perch and silver perch. OUR duck shooters were issued substantial fines at the Echuca Magistrates Court recently. The court ordered four men to pay a total of $4000 for discharging firearms before the official opening of duck season at Taylors Creek in Gunbower last March. Game Management Authority CEO Greg Hyams said GMA officers along with fisheries, wildlife and police officers were patrolling the area when shots were fired before the scheduled start time of 7.20am. “Officers approached the men during a routine patrol after they were observed raising their firearms and discharging multiple shots at a duck passing over them at 7.09am,” Mr Hyams said. “Discharging a firearm before the designated opening time is an offence under the Wildlife Act, as hunting under poor light conditions may compromise a hunter’s ability to positively identify game species.” “This is particularly important on opening day when the majority of duck hunters are active.” For further information regarding hunting in Victoria, visit www.gma.vic. gov.au

WIMMING or splashing around the pool is a national pastime for many Australians, and Belinda Hackett of Splash Swimming Bendigo in Wood Street, is determined to make sure all Australians, young and old can safely enjoy their time in and around the water. A 10 metre heated salt-water pool will soon have you or your child mixing it with the best, no matter what age. Classes of no more than three or four students, or individual classes ensure the utmost attention from Belinda or her two qualified instructors who follow the Royal Lifesaving Victoria Swimming and Survival Program for all students. The first 30 minute lesson is free and catch or make-up lessons are supplied at no additional cost if your child misses a class. Special baby classes cater for infants from three months to two-years-of-age, with older children grouped according to age.

Bronze Medallion classes can also be undertaken for older and more proficient swimmers. Splash Swimming Bendigo also runs daily lunch time and evening water aerobic classes for adults wanting to maintain optimal flexibility. Splash will also once again be offering a Vic Swim program these September school holidays. This intensive, fun and affordable program is a great way to further improve swimming skills and technique. Your child will enjoy five consecutive daily 45 minute lessons for just $25. Book in for one week or two. Splash Swimming Bendigo at 76 Wood Street, Bendigo, open Monday to Friday from 9am. INTER isn’t over yet and the weather can still be cold and wet, the days are gradually getting longer but there still isn’t enough light or the desire to get out and about and go for a ride or a run. You could go to the gym, but that would mean leaving your cosy home. How about keeping fit with some fitness equipment from Mr Rental? Mr Rental has equipment that will suit your needs. They have exercise bikes that you can either adjust manually or computer controlled bikes that programin hills and valleys to keep your ride interesting. There are cross trainers that give you a low impact workout that is like skiing, ideal if you hope to get up to the snow this year. All this equipment is well maintained

and quiet enough that you could watch television while you work out. Mr Rental even has rowing machines and total trainers for a full body workout. Of course Mr Rental also has treadmills, suitable for walkers and joggers of all sizes. Choose a basic walker that can go as slow as you like, right up to a runner that will support 125 kilograms at up to 16 kilometres an hour. While that might not sound fast you still would travel more than five kilometres in 20 minutes So if you want to stay or get fit this winter then give Daryl and the team at Mr Rental a call on 5443 5222 or 1800 880 778. Or why not personally call into their easy to find premises at 80b Garsed Street, just below the Bendigo Marketplace.

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, August 14, 2015

WEEKLY SPORT Top spot on the line FRIDAY night’s final home game of the regular season looms critical for the Bendigo Lady Braves’ playoff chances, with a top-two spot on the line in the South East Australian Basketball League’s south conference. Bendigo enters the contest against Brisbane without Australian Opals representatives Tessa Lavey and Kelly Wilson, but spurred on by the form of a red-hot Elyse Penaluna. Penaluna captured back-toback SEABL player of the week honours after a huge 28 points and 25 rebounds. The 193cm centre almost amassed half of Bendigo’s total score, while her 25 rebounds was only six short of Frankston’s entire team effort. With head-to-head advantages over second-placed Hobart and third-placed Launceston, a top two spot is still very much in the offing for the Lady Braves, but they will need some results to fall their way.

Brisbane will be no easybeats, the Lady Spartans sit third in the east conference with an 11-9 record and are destined for a playoff finish of their own. Winners of their past seven games, the Lady Braves need to win on Friday night to be any chance of finishing top two and securing a home final, but are no chance to overtake firstplaced Kilsyth. If it wins on Friday, Bendigo will need Frankston – who the Lady Braves defeated last weekend – to upset both Hobart and Launceston for Bendigo to host a final next week. The equation is much easier for the Bendigo Braves, who are already locked into a toptwo finish. The side still has plenty to play for in its home finale, with Braves gun Taylor Bell playing his 300th game for the club. The Lady Braves tip off at 6pm on Friday at Bendigo Stadium, with the men’s clash getting under way at 8pm.

THE Bendigo Fighting Miners will carry plenty of confidence into the club’s fourth successive Victorian Rugby Union grand final tilt against Cerburus on Saturday. The Miners were denied a flag in the cruelest of circumstances last year, conceding an injury time try to go down to Maroondah by four points. Determined to make amends for last year’s

heartbreak, the Miners take on Cerberus in the decider at Box Hill on Saturday. Cerberus went through the home and away season undefeated, but were belted to the tune of 46-15 by Bendigo in the major semi final. While Bendigo enjoyed the week off last weekend, the Miners’ grand final combatants had to grind out a 21-17 win over

Eltham in the preliminary final. The strength of Bendigo’s front pack will once more be critical against the speed of the Cerberus backs, with potentially heavy conditions at Sparks Reserve playing into Bendigo’s hands. Along with being the fourth grand final in succession to be contested by the Miners, in the past 12 years the club has contest-

ed ten grand finals coming away with the spoils on seven occasions. The likes of full-back Fareni Moefaauo and prop Jesse Tuitupou will be keys for the Miners, who will look to control possession through a dominant front pack and slow the game down to wrest control from Cerberus. Saturday’s game gets under way at 12.30pm at Box Hill’s Sparks Reserve.

Spirit stars play with the Opals BENDIGO Spirit stars Kelly Wilson and Belinda Snell are set to play a big part in the Australian Opals Rio Olympic Games hopes, after being named in the Opals 12-player team to take on New Zealand tonight. The two-game Oceania Championship between the two teams will be held at Rod Laver Arena on Saturday before heading to New Zealand on Sunday, with the series winner to gain automatic qualification to the Rio 2016 games. Snell and Wilson impressed in the team’s recent tour matches against Japan and join former Spirit young guns Sara Blicavs and Tessa Lavey in the squad. The Opals performed strongly in the warm-up series against Japan, winning the first two matches

before going down by a point in the final contest. The series lead-up was marred with controversy amid Basketball Australia’s decision not to allow Liz Cambage to join the team at a training camp, after she chose to attend a music festival. Opals coach Brendan Joyce said picking the final squad was a tough decision. “We’ve selected a group that’s made a huge commitment and who also had an impact throughout camps and on tour and who have represented themselves well,” he said. “We’ve put together a very, very competitive team.” Tip-off in the Opals’ clash with the Tall Ferns at 6.30pm on Friday, with the match broadcast live on the Nine Network’s Gem channel.

WIN: Kelly Wilson is in the Opals team.

WEEKLY SPORT

Aiming for the best

DOWN: The weekend promises some top action.

Teams dig deep for finals berth A POTENTIAL grand final preview is on offer in the final round of the Heathcote District Football League season this weekend, when the undefeated Leitchville-Gunbower hosts second-placed North Bendigo at Leitchville. Both sides are coming off huge victories, the Bombers smashing White Hills by 83 points last week while North recorded a 16-goal win over Mount Pleasant. When the two sides met in round nine it was the Bombers who came away with the spoils, but North will be determined to change that heading into a qualifying final clash with Colbinabbin next week. Leitchville can not be deposed from top spot, and will enjoy the week off before playing the winner from the Dogs and Grasshoppers clash in the major semi final in two weeks. The 2015 season has marked a massive turnaround for the Bombers, who looked to be in trouble after losing coach Marty Shadbolt along with a host of key players after a third-placed finish last year. However, club legend Matt Hawken put his hand up to coach, and has received strong on-field leadership from Tim Lincoln, Jye Keath, Joel Helman and a host of the club’s fledgling young talent that has filtered through after a number of strong finishes in the league’s under-17 competition. After entering the competition in 2010, Leitchville-Gunbower recorded only 11 wins in its first three seasons – it has recorded 15 this season alone

– and the club’s future again looked in doubt after a onewin campaign in 2012. Successive finals finishes the past two years have shown the progress the club has made, exemplified by the Bombers heading into the 2015 postseason as flag favourites. North Bendigo is not the only challenger for that title, with Colbinabbin looming large behind spearhead Grant Weeks. The Grasshoppers have peaked at the right time of the season after dealing Elmore a 22-goal belting on the weekend, and take on bottom side Heathcote this weekend before heading into finals. In other round 18 HDFL games, Huntly hosts Elmore and Lockington Bamawm United tackles fifth-placed White Hills. The finals matchups and venues for next week are already set, with North Bendigo to meet Colbinabbin at Huntly in the qualifying final on Saturday, August 22, while Huntly faces White Hills the following day at North Bendigo. Huntly will also host the league’s grand final on Saturday, August 12.

BE the best you can be. That is the aim of new Bendigo Pioneers talent manager Steve Sharp when he talks about the Pioneers’ program. Four months into his role with the club, Sharp and coach Brett Henderson are the linchpins in a Pioneers organisation that has some big ideas about the future of the program. The former Golden Square Football Netball Club president replaced long time Pioneers talent manager Ray Byrne earlier this year, and along with Henderson has brought a fresh approach to the Pioneers. Having spent time consulting the football and wider community through his first four months, Sharp is ready to roll his sleeves up and get his hands dirty this off-season to put some admittedly ambitious, but nonetheless realistic, plans into practice. Chief among them are upgraded facilities, the possible use of a shared office space with AFL Central Victoria, more games at the Queen Elizabeth Oval and in outlying areas and also being more engaged with both the football and wider communities. “That community engagement has been a real focus, the first few months have involved a fair bit of travel because we are such a big area,” Sharp said. “With Mildura having a similar representation in the squad to Bendigo, we need to get up there and be seen a bit more. “We want to build

LODDON Valley Football League finals kick off this weekend, with a pair of scintilating matchups on offer. On Saturday, Bridgewater hosts the qualifying final between Pyramid Hill and Bears Lagoon-Serpentine, while on Sunday Mitiamo meets Calivil United in the elimination final at Pyramid Hill’s Mitchell Park.

The Pioneers are spread between an administration base at Wade Street Oval in Golden Square and a training base at Epsom-Huntly Reserve, while splitting games between EpsomHuntly and the QEO. “For us it is not so much around measures of success, but having the best possible

Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN some really strong links with the community up there both through football and in general so they clearly know that Mildura and those other areas outside Bendigo are a big part of the program. “We want kids, whether they are from Kyabram, Bendigo, Mildura, wherever it may be, to aspire to want to play for our club. “It is an effort to get to those areas, but we feel we absolutely have to make that effort and we enjoy visiting those areas and getting to know the people there.” “We might even look at standalone games at the QEO on a Friday night or

Sunday, so as many people as possible can come along and see what we are all about.” Despite challenges in terms of player relocation and facilities drawing players from such a large area, the mood of the club is undoubtedly positive. A new high-profile strength and conditioning coach is soon to be announced and the club is hopeful it will secure prized commitments from several players currently based at Geelong Grammar. Perhaps the most ambitious of the goals Sharp has for the club is based around facilities.

facilties we can have in regards to high performance, training and everything that we need as an organisation in the one precinct,” he said. “To be able to have state of the art, best practice first class facilities would be a huge boost. “If we have that, and continue to improve off the field, we feel pretty strongly that the on field will take care of itself with Hendo and the people that want to be involved in the club. “We are trying to be the best we can possibly be. We don’t want to sit at six or seven out of 10 and be happy with where we are because we only have so much time in the day, we want to strive for the absolute best and put the hours and effort in to make sure we get there.”
