RAILWAY stations at Huntly, Lansell Square, Maiden Gully, Marong Business Park and the Bendigo Showgrounds could be constructed in a bold new plan from the City of Greater Bendigo. Council’s Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy was released on Monday, designed to influence the way the city’s transport needs change as the Bendigo continues to expand.
■
Metro and free buses on the cards
The strategy envisages a “Goldfields Metro” system that would see an independent operator and dedicated rolling stock operating a service covering Castlemaine, Huntly and Marong. The strategy also advocates for a free transport zone in the city’s CBD to provide access to Bendigo’s new
hospital, shopping and tourist destinations, a western bypass of Marong on the Calder Alternative Freeway and spells the end of the line for the much-discussed Bendigo ring road. City of Greater Bendigo strategy manager Trevor Budge said council had dared to dream big in its plans. “We wanted to make it an aspi-

rational plan, there is no point having a plan that really just does the things that we were doing anyway,” Mr Budge said. “When we started talking a couple of years ago about the rail system, for instance, people were very sceptical but now we have seen the government come on board.

“What we are planning in ITLUS is that we can use the railway system as a spine to encourage our land use, so our stations become activity areas and hubs for communities.” Rail is set to be one of the big winners out of the project, with the strategy also recommending a study into the feasibility of re-opening the line to Inglewood be undertaken, which could see Bridgewater and Inglewood stations reinstated for passenger use.

The Weekly look at the local real estate market
Days on the market fall THERE are a number of market indicators which chart the state wide, and local, performance of the property sector. This includes the average length of time that homes in each town or city take to sell, known as median days on market. The latest REIV data shows a number of regional towns across Victoria recorded significant falls in the median days on market over the year, reflecting the strength of the property market in these areas. Homes in Quarry Hill had a median of 47 days on the market, Kennington 48 days, Strathfieldsaye 56 days and Epsom 58 days. In Golden Square, the median was 63 days and Kangaroo Flat 71 days. One of regional Victoria’s strongest performers was in the Geelong and surf coast region of the state, with homes in the coastal town of Jan Juc selling faster in July than the same period last year, with the median number of days on market falling 20 days to 32.5. The outer Geelong suburb of Waurn Ponds – which has seen recent price gains – was another strong performer with the number of days on market also down 20 days over the year to a median of just 25 in July – one of the lowest state wide. Substantial declines in days on market were also recorded north of Melbourne in the Goulburn Valley region. Homes in Yarrawonga, Echuca, Benalla, Mooroopna,

Kialla, Kyabram and Nagambie all sold faster when compared with last year’s figures. The median number of days on market for homes in Yarrawonga fell 53 days over the year to 80 while homes in Mooroopna also sold faster, decreasing 43 days to 70. Homes in Kialla had a median of 68.5 days on market - 30 days less than the same period last year – while Nagambie’s median days on market dropped 34 days to 84. The number of days for a home to sell in Kyabram fell 17 days; homes in Benalla sold 16 days faster than the same time last year and Echuca’s median days on market dropped by 10.5 days to 63.5 days in July. Other regional towns recording large decreases in days on market were Paynesville in the Gippsland region, down 67 days to 77.5, Point Lonsdale, down 39 days to 94 and Anglesea, down 64.5 days to 110.5. Regional towns within commuting distance of Melbourne also experienced declines in median days on market with homes in Woodend selling 8.5 days faster than July 2014 with a median of 58.5 days while Longwarry, southeast of Melbourne fell 21 days to 85. POTENTIAL: 47 Miller Street will be auctioned on Saturday. POLICY and funding for regional universities should be driven by regional development as much as by education and research. Regional Universities Network (RUN) executive director, Dr Caroline Perkins, told this week’s Australian Regional Development Conference that regional universities need to be more formally recognised as a key player in regional development. “The government is currently considering ways to boost the collaboration between universities and industry to generate more applied research and knowledge transfer to drive innovation and productivity. This could be addressed in regional Australia with the better integration of regional universities in regional development policy and funding,” Dr Perkins said. “Regional universities contribute to human capital development; regional governance and planning; community development; health and ageing; arts,
culture and sport; environmental sustainability; and industry and business development.’’ A CUTE two-bedroom California bungalow in ever popular Quarry Hill is set to go under the hammer from 1pm Saturday. Built in about 1926, the property at 47 Miller Street features many original features, spacious rooms, a remodelled kitchen and is of solid brick construction. Listed with DCK’s Leonie Butler, the home is within walking distance of local schools, cafes, the CBD and offers loads of potential. A SECLUDED 1.09 hectare bush block in Flora Hill is also scheduled for auction by DCK on Saturday. Just a five minute drive from the CBD, the block is zoned residential, is close to the One Tree Hill Regional Park at the end of a cul-de-sac, and has all services available. The auction for 151 Osborne Street is set for 11.30am.

Call for good behaviour Police ask for calm as rival protests meet
THERE will be an increased police presence in Bendigo’s CBD over the weekend, with a number of rallies planned both in opposition and support of Bendigo’s proposed mosque. The rallies are set to take place tomorrow afternoon. Victoria Police Superintendent Mick West has issued a warning to both groups to obey the law and respect local businesses and residents, and said contact with both groups indicated the rallies would be peaceful. “We’ll be doing our best to make sure tempers don’t get frayed and to keep these two groups apart,” Supt West said. “We’re aware of both sides of the political spectrum, we’ve got
different political beliefs here. Some may be different religious beliefs, so we’ve got to manage that. “We’re telling both groups we expect you to behave, we expect to respect this area, and respect the local people. “The full police contingent that will be here in Bendigo are out to send the message that you’re welcome to Bendigo and do what you’re lawfully entitled to – but we’re not going to put up with any violence, any intimidation of any of our local social fabric.” The increased police presence will include transit police on public transport, and a heavy highway patrol presence on the roads.
Supt West said he had been in regular contact with the protesters, and believed there would be adequate police to deal with the rallies. “We really don’t know how

We expect you to behave, we expect to respect this area, and respect the local people
the groups are going to behave,” he said. “We’re very comfortable we’ve got adequate police presence up here.... We’ve spent a fair bit of the last two weeks planning for this event – it has the potential to be a significant event outside the Mel-
He said police had also held discussions with local businesses from the area around the protests. “We’ve just advised them... we’re going to have a lot of people in there, we are putting some roadblocks in place, there could be some congestion.”
Push on for free buses A FREE public transport zone in Bendigo’s CBD could give access to Bendigo Hospital, shopping precincts and tourist destinations under the City of Greater Bendigo’s Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy. ITLUS recommends the city continue previous discussions with Public Transport Victoria into providing free bus travel in the area, to promote public transport as an alternative to short car trips around the CBD. Council’s strategy manager Trevor Budge said the plan could have a drastic impact on the traffic in Bendigo’s busiest area. “We know that there are plenty of cities around the world that have trialled this idea to get around the CBD,” he said. “We think that is another option here in Bendigo where we start to move people around the CBD and they can jump on the bus and they don’t need to pay. “That is a car that gets off the road or even 30 cars off the roads.” A major focus of ITLUS is changing the way people approach their transport needs, encouraging people to change the way they get to work one in every five days to reduce the

Roadblocks will be in place at the intersection Hargreaves and Williamson streets, Hargreaves and Mundy streets, Pall Mall and Bull Street, Lyttleton Terrace and Williamson Street, Lyttleton Terrace and Mundy Street, Myers Street and St Andrews Avenue and Myers and Mundy streets. Supt West encouraged residents to plan ahead and consider their need to go into the city centre, and said police would remain in Bendigo for as long as they were needed. “This is your community, you have a right to go out and shop, you have a right to go about your business, and we’re certainly not trying to curtail that at all,” he said. “We won’t be moving until everything’s concluded.”
Bold plans for transport 3From Page 1
PEDAL POWER: Bendigo council is asking people to ride, walk or use public transport at least one day a week. traffic on local roads. Whether it be through active transport (cycling, walking) or public transport, council chief executive officer Craig Niemann said changing people’s behaviour was critical to most efficiently using Bendigo’s transport system. “A lot of this rests with people’s own choices about how they move around the city and between different locations,” he said. “We are walking closely with PTV to try and make sure that we can improve the bus and rail networks and then hopefully people will take up
that opportunity to use public transport more often.” Mr Budge said Bendigo’s reliance on the CBD meant managing traffic and road use in that area was a major challenge. The soon to be announced final results of the Bendigo Bus Review are expected to ease some of that, with an announcement expected in coming weeks. The plan is expected to feature more direct routes and priority routes set up, to enhance connections to transport hubs at Kangaroo Flat, Epsom, Eaglehawk and Bendigo stations.
“Bendigo is quite different to many other regional cities in that 47 per cent of our jobs are in and around the CBD, so there is a huge need to get people to that area,” Mr Budge said. “As a city we are extremely reliant on the car, and we need to provide an opportunity for people that don’t have access to a car. “Whether you have a car or not, you should have the same access to employment and facilities, especially after business hours, and currently we don’t have that.” - Joel Peterson
The Goldfields Metro proposal would see the reinstatement of stations at Harcourt, Golden Square and Marong, as well as the five new stations constructed. Stations at Goornong and Raywood on the Echuca and Swan Hill lines would also be reinstated under the plan, but not be part of the metro-style service. The implementation of the Marong bypass would come as part of a move advocated by the Calder Freeway Improvement Comittee to extend the freeway section of road from the Ravenswood Interchange to Bridgewater. After being a much maligned plan in the past, a proposed four-lane bypass through Bendigo’s suburbs will not go ahead, after the strategy found there was “no substantial evidence” to support building a ring road. Despite the biggest aspects of the plan coming in the form of rail and bus initiatives, mayor Peter Cox said the plan is not “anti-roads” or set to disadvantage drivers. “We see the car playing a very important role going forward in our flexibility to get around, but at the same time we don’t want the congestion on our roads,” Cr Cox said. “The alternatives – walking, cycling, taking public transport – are what this is all about, and if we can get out of our cars one in every five days we will reduce traffic on our roads immensely.” Mr Budge emphasised that point, saying roads are only one cog in the machine. “We will still continue to need our roads and we are not proposing to close any roads, in fact we want to make some of our intersections and roads safer under this plan,” he said. “The critical thing is to see roads as part of a system, not the whole system. We have very much built a city that most people are hugely dependent on cars and we want to reduce that.”

Dream double deal sealed EXCLUSIVE
By PETER KENNEDY
ONE of Bendigo’s most iconic rural properties and one of the city’s most popular cafe businesses have been sold in a multi-million dollar double deal steeped in history and hospitality. Built in the 1850s, Ravenswood Homestead is often billed as the birthplace of Bendigo, while the popular Brewhouse Café business has, in just a few years, cemented its reputation as one of the city’s finest coffee houses, and as a shining light of the region’s hospitality industry. The common ingredient to the sale of these iconic properties is prominent local business identity Corey Scoble, who has sold the Brewhouse Café business to Melbourne based hospitality interests, while at the same time agreeing to purchase the stately Ravenswood Homestead. He describes the purchase of such an historic and significant property as the happiest moment of his life, other than the birth of his children. “Once I had a look through I got that feeling that I really wanted it… I knew I wanted this to be my home for the next 20 years,” he said. “Once you drive up that driveway…. It’s just the hills surrounding it, it’s the history of it and the beautiful homestead, and the old trees. It just really blows your mind. “More people should be able to come and visit this place. How we do that is what we are going to work out over the next couple of years.” Mr Scoble said it was difficult to say goodbye to Brewhouse, the 10th café business he has operated in a long and successful career in hospitality. “It was very hard and it was a very sad day... a little bit emotional
but also very, very happy about taking this over as well,” he said. Tweed Sutherland First National director Matt Leonard negotiated the sale of Ravenswood Homestead, and said it was a privilege to be a part of an opportunity he describes as a once-in-a-lifetime. “We keep hearing about real estate booms in relation to Melbourne and Sydney but whenever there’s a transaction of this nature that occurs in Bendigo particularly being a local buyer, it tends to filter right down through all the price brackets and injects more confidence into the marketplace,” Mr Leonard said. The Brewhouse sale is of the business only, and does not include the freehold, located on the corner of Hargreaves Street and Edwards Street, or Mr Scoble’s wholesale coffee roasting business. It will also be business as usual at hashtag, Mr Scoble’s Strathdale venue. The landmark bed and breakfast property is believed to have sold for a price in vicinity of $2.5 million. Located on 35 acres of superb rolling countryside, it boasts up to 22 bedrooms and numerous bathrooms. “This is where Bendigo started,” Mr Leonard said. “Before the gold rush, Bendigo was a sheep station and where the Alexandra Fountain is was then a part of this property.” Mr Leonard also paid tribute to Mr Scoble and his passion, vision and drive. “To start in an industrial estate…. To use the cliché if you build it they will come and they did come and his coffee business has just gone from strength to strength. In a short number of years to be able to turn around and sell that business for what he has is an incredible story. “It’s a credit to him and to see where he’s come with hospital-

ity and of course this is a credit to Art and Troy, and the stamp that they’ve left on this property over the 20 years that they’ve had it.” Art van Dyk bought Ravenswood Homestead without seeing it, and has since relocated with his partner Troy to a home they built in the foothills of nearby Mount Alexander. The couple’s new home was recently featured on the TV show Grand Designs Australia. Mr van Dyk said for him, saying goodbye to Ravenswood was really a new beginning. “You’re only a caretaker of a
HOLD onto your kilts – Bendigo has adopted its own official tartan. In a massive coup for the city, Greater City of Bendigo councillors voted unanimously in favour of adopting an official tartan, making Bendigo the first municipal council in Australia to do so. Bendigo’s tartan will be registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority, placing the city among the ranks of haggis, bagpipes and Irn Bru in all that is quintessentially Scottish. It will also be used for promotional material for events such as the Scots Day Out. Councillor Helen Leach described the tartan as “strengthening (Bendigo’s) sentimental link to Scotland”. property like this, it obviously gets handed down to someone else but it’s very special, and I’m very proud that everything I’ve done to the property I’ve done properly,” he said. “As history continues, I took it up a level when I bought it, and I think Corey will do the same, and I think that’s exciting.” An antiques and garage sale will be held at the property this weekend, with a huge array of items. The sale is on both Saturday and Sunday from 9am to dark. For all inquiries, phone 0437 353 284.
National Trust calls for return of iron works meeting, councillors opted to return the collection to the National Trust, however wish to retain the conservatory for future use in the gardens. Councillor James Williams said he was happy the National Trust had shown interest in the collection, particularly as it had fallen into disuse. “It isn’t of any value to us sitting in containers and storage,” Cr Williams said. “(It’s) a very important collection and I noticed that the decision was put to the heritage commit-
tee… and it was felt that was an appropriate place for it to go. So I’m absolutely rapt that the National Trust of Australia and Victoria has shown an interest in it.” Councillor Rod Campbell believed it was important for council to keep the conservatory, because unlike the rest of the collection, it has links to Bendigo’s history. “It’s important to take a closer look at the conservatory,” Cr Campbell said. “Because the conservatory does have a link to Bendigo.” The conservatory is believed

Council’s original purpose for borrowing the collection was to use the pieces to replicate heritage style ornamentation on new buildings in Bendigo at the time, however newer technologies quickly made the cast iron moulds redundant. Councillor Rod Fyffe said the collection had been taken in with good intentions at the time. – Laura Hurley

Thumbs up for centre
By LAURA HURLEY
THE City of Greater Bendigo has approved the development of an education centre in Flora Hill after receiving seven objections in response to the plans. The training facility will be developed on the current site of Haven: Home Safe’s Sidney Myer project, and will be subject to a number of conditions to address concerns raised in the objections. Development of the training facility will include the partial demolition of the existing building, and a reduction in the number parking spaces at the site. Addressing concerns that the plans did not provide adequate
parking for the facility, councillor Rod Campbell said clients that would be using the facility already live on site. “The development proposed is for a double storey building used as a training facility,” Cr Campbell said. “The people using (the facility) live on site – the parking issue isn’t as big as people might think. “There are a number of conditions in the permit that address the concerns. It’s a very worthwhile proposition to support.” The Sidney Myer project will offer skills training to current HHS clients while providing them with secure accommodation, in an effort to curb homelessness by tran-
sitioning clients to more permanent living arrangements. Councillor Barry Lyons echoed Cr Campbell’s sentiments about the nature of the project, arguing it was a worthwhile initiative to support. “On balance this is a good idea. It’s an opportunity for people who live there to further their education,” he said. “All in all, I think it’s a good development.” Councillor Helen Leach was the sole objector to the planning application, and aired concerns about the number of available parking spaces for HHS staff and residents in adjoining properties. “There was a fair amount of
licence taken with the supposed number of spaces,” she said. Another objection from an adjoining property owner that the addition of a deck to the facility would cause problems with overlooking was addressed by the requirement of a screen around the decking. Further objections regarding the need for the facility in Bendigo were dismissed by a number of councillors, with councillor Lisa Ruffell describing the program as a “win-win” for Bendigo. “Well done to the Sidney Myer program,” she said. “This is about supporting our community, I wholly support this.”
Innovation wins award for Haven A PROGRAM aimed at tackling homelessness by assisting clients to transition into permanent housing has won an award recognising its innovation. Haven; Home Safe’s (HHS) Sidney Myer Haven program won the inaugural Community Sector Banking Housing Impact Award on Monday. The program aims to tackle issues surrounding homelessness by combining a $7 million mediumterm housing development with a supported life skills curriculum to assist the homeless transition into permanent housing. Community Sector Banking chief executive Greg Peel awarded HSS chief executive Ken Marchingo and chair Sue Clarke with the accolade, and applauded the organisation for making “significant change”. “So HHS is the recipient of the first award in housing innovation,” Mr Peel said. “The program is actually about delivery of a wholistic ap-

A way in which people can transition not just from having a short term stay but to being engaged in issues of mental health or alcohol abuse. “It is actually trying to transition people and address the issues.” Mr Marchingo said the Sidney Myer Haven program aimed towards building a range of skills for HSS’s existing clients, and said it filled a void in the type of services
available to the homeless. “Other programs don’t address the fundamental issue that our economy is a hostile place for poor people. And if you’re going to be in that hostile environment, you’re going to need a whole range of skills,” Mr Marchingo said. “And you can make this observation, if someone’s coming in our door as a homeless young person, you don’t have to be Einstein to know they’re missing a whole
set of basic life skills. “So what we’re trying to do here is we’re trying to build a social curriculum of skills, but we’re buying their service. This is a critical difference. “We are offering them subsidised rent but we’re saying the value of that subsidy you know you’d have to work 20 hours a week for that, to make that kind of money. We’re going to give it to you, but in return we want 10 hours a week.”
Greenaway holds firm GREENAWAY Bins is here to stay. In a statement issued by the embattled green waste collection service yesterday, Greenaway said it intends to continue providing its services to customers, despite the Greater City of Bendigo beginning a trial organic waste kerbside collection service in coming weeks. “Our goals were and still are, to provide a high level of customer service and give the community a choice in how they deal with their green waste,” the statement said. The future of Greenaway was brought into doubt in recent weeks as council have began preparing for their trial service in 2800 households around Bendigo, with a council-run organics waste kerbside collection service set to be introduced across the entire city in July next year. A petition on Change.org urging council to reconsider the way it will operate its planned organics service has received hundreds of supporters after Greenaway said it was possible it may be run out of business. In its statement, Greenaway said it was “disappointed it had not been included in council’s waste management discussions”. “We have consistently initiated discussions with the City of Greater Bendigo Waste Management Unit, they have at no time been proactive in discussions with us,” it said. “If there are exemptions to the council’s organics program, they should be published, so ratepayers can make an informed decision about their situation.” In response to comments made by mayor Peter Cox that he doubted the company had the capacity to deal with the dramatic increase in waste service that a city wide organics collection program would require, Greenaway said it had been expanded to meet Bendigo’s needs for seven years. “We have grown the business from nothing to where it is today and we are prepared and able to expand to meet demand,” it said. Greenaway thanked its customers for their support over recent weeks.

LOCAL councillors and board members from the North Cental Catchment Management Authority (NCCMA) gathered at the Capital Theatre on Tuesday to discuss plans for sustainable agriculture. Among the points discussed were efficient use of water for irrigation, connectivity of agricultural centres by rail as well as minimising the transport costs of exported goods. Councillor James Williams, who is also a current member of the

NCCMA board, spoke at the event. One of his main concerns was the conservation of local wetlands and efficiently putting water back into those areas. “If we just keep taking water away, we’re just going to lose more and more (wetlands),” he said. “We’ve already lost 90 per cent of them.” Also on the agenda was relieving freight traffic in and out of Bendigo and how implementation of the Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy (ITLUS) may benefit this.
He placed a focus on the planned Marong Business Park and how that may assist Inglewood and Bridgewater in becoming potential growth areas for industry, and improving their access to resources in Bendigo. “(Bridgewater and Inglewood) can become manufacturing and growth areas, and have been identified as such,” Cr Williams said. “We need train links for freight, and I include the Bendigo to Inglewood line in that to get back into to Portland, Adelaide and Darwin rather than everything through Melbourne.”

Seeing red in the name of rebellion BENDIGO stepped back more than 160 years yesterday, to reenact the Red Ribbon Rebellion, a turning point in Bendigo’s colourful gold rush history. Originally held in 1853, this peaceful protest march was di-
rected against the payment of what the diggers called a tax. As a result, diggers took to wearing red ribbons as a symbol of their protest “We see so much violence in the news and even on TV pro-
grams, that we often forget what a privilege it is to live in a peaceful society,” organiser Jim Evans said. “The Red Ribbon Rebellion re-enactment is a great way to celebrate this privilege.”

Fresh fruit on Friday THE Bendigo Weekly has joined with our local businesses to promote the better health and wellbeing of Bendigo school children via the Fresh Fruit Friday program. Funded and supported by the McKern Foundation, J.L. King and Co, Porter Davis Homes, Adroit Insurance Group, Bluescope Distribution and the Weekly, Fresh Fruit Friday has so far involved about 5000 students at more than 20 local primary schools.
McKern Foundation director Michael McKern said participating primary schools are granted with a selection of fresh fruit each Friday, to be cut up and distributed among students. “After so many reports in the media around children heading to schools without breakfast and adequate nutrition, we could think of no better program to kick off in our local community,” the Eaglehawk businessman, 2010 City
of Greater Bendigo Citizen of the Year, and father of eight said. “It is wonderful to be able to provide some fresh fruit to so many local kids, and equally, it is wonderful to have the support of other communityminded businesses who support what we are all trying to achieve.” Since Fresh Fruit Friday started, schools at Big Hill, Eaglehawk, Harcourt Valley, Quarry Hill, White Hills,

YOUNG adults within sporting clubs will be the focus of a session run by two former Carlton footballers in conjunction with the City of Greater Bendigo next week to help sports people manage off-field issues. Glenn Wanton and Jake Edwards will speak at Bendigo’s Capital Theatre to help local men deal with everyday problems away from the sporting arena as part of Bendigo Men’s Health Week. Manton played 178 games for Carlton and Essendon over a 12-year career and played in the Blues’ 1999 grand final loss to North Melbourne. Edwards is a former Blue who fell on hard times after being delisted but got his life back on track and now plays
with Darley in the Ballarat Football League. Edwards co-founded Outside The Locker Room, a program to help teenagers and young adults within sporting clubs about off-field issues such as alcohol, drugs, mental health and general wellbeing. Although this event is geared towards assisting men in the 16 to 25 year age bracket, young women are most welcome to attend so they can learn how they might assist male siblings, partners or friends. Council’s Steven Abbott said the event was a great opportunity for young men to get involved in Bendigo Men’s Health Week. “I am hoping local sporting clubs throughout Greater

Bendigo will get behind this important event and encouraged their members to come along and listen to Glenn and Jake,” Mr Abbott said. “Sporting clubs provide young people with a great sense of community, especially in regional areas. They’re often involved with the club a few times a week and see their coaches and teammates as an extended part of their family. “We really want our young people to know it’s ok if you’re not ok. Whatever they might be struggling with personally can be helped.” Bendigo Men’s Health Week takes place from August 29 to September 6. A POPULAR Bendigo playcentre is changing things with plans for a family evening bistro serving alcohol. Owners Glenn and Denise Twitt opened the East Bendigo playcentre in June last year after seeing a need for something different. Mulligrub’s has been serving bistro meals on Friday and Saturday nights since May 29 with the kitchen open from 5.30pm to 8pm. Proposed plans at the City of Greater Bendigo council seek to extend the centre’s hours of operation from 9.30am to
11.30pm daily to enable the family bistro. The plans also reveal a new 40-seat outdoor dining area with fixed outdoor furniture and a colourbond shed costing about $50,000.

Sale of alcohol will be offered on family bistro nights only.” Council is yet to consider the planning applications.

A NEW $3 million secure women and children’s facility in Bendigo is set to begin operating in mid 2016. State Bendigo MPs Jacinta Allan and Maree Edwards met with representatives from Annie North and the department of health and human services on Wednesday to view plans for the new facility. The facility will operate as secure accommodation for women and children who are victims of domestic violence, with a focus on creating a therapeutic experience for those using the units. Made up of six units, the site will include a childrens play area, a kitchen garden, and conference room where women will be able to video conference to court. Ms Allan described the plans as “another milestone in the journey” for the facility. “It’s not just a building, this is a new service for women and children in our community,” she said. “This has been part of a
long campaign from organisations like Annie North and other organisations in the family violence area and how we can provide better services and better accommodation for women and children who are victims of family violence. “This is the culmination of a massive amount of work that Annie North has done

It was absolutely essential that our community had a facility like this,” Ms Edwards said “We know that all our services that deal with family violence victims are under pressure. “So services like that, accommodation like this is absolutely vital going into the future.” Annie North chair Robyn Trainor said what set this facility apart was its focus on creating a homelike and comfortable environment for the women and children using it. “Often women have to be accommodated in a range of alternative accommodation, like hotels, that are not ideal – because when you’ve got a woman having to leave a violent situation in one room with children who are traumatised, with no cooking facilities, it can feel like an extra punishment,” Ms Trainor said.

Cubby plan for cash
A ONE of a kind cubby is up for grabs, with all of the proceeds going towards the Bendigo Prostate Support Group. Local Men In Sheds members built the cubby, and with an asking price of $2500, they say the money will be going towards a worthy cause. Member David Reid said this year’s building was unique, and could be used for any number of things. “We wanted to get away from building standard square shapes,” he Reid said. “Instead of just a standard square roof, we decided to give it a twisted one.” The structure can be used as a small shed, a craft room or a cubby. “It’s a great project to get the blokes on board,” Mr Reid said. Bendigo Prostate Support Group’s Bert Moorhead said the funds would go towards the everyday operation expenses of the group. “We have about 60 members,

and basically operate as a support group,” he said. The group meets on the last Thursday of every month at 6pm at the Bendigo Community Health Services building at Eaglehawk, with a guests speakers and meals organised on rotating months. With a number of fundraising events also upcoming, including the Run For Dad on September 6, and the Blokes Biggest Lunch in November, Mr Moorhead said now was as good a time as ever for men to check their risk of prostate cancer. “You need to get checked early,” he said. “That’s our main message to get out there, getting the blood test is a starting point.” Men In Sheds members thanked Penny – horticulturalist, receptionist, hearing aid user Hume & Iser Home Hardware, Bendigo Hire, the Salvation Army and the City of Greater Bendigo for their sponsorship. To enquire about the cubby, called Salvocare Northern Victoria on 5442 7683. TOP HUT: The Men’s Shed cubby gets the thumbs up.

Students work and learn with the council Seven students from La Trobe University Bendigo are gaining some valuable hands-on experience by working with the City of Greater Bendigo’s Economic Development Unit to update one of the city’s key business resources. of an update and the council chose to work with students for this project as it helped us to upgrade a key resource while at the same time providing the students with hands on, practical experience.” He said in addition to updating the document the students are also creating a case study to show businesses and other gov-

A BENDIGO car dealership is gearing up for the Run For Dad Fun Run for the third year running. However, this will be the first year that Poyser Motor Group will have two sites involved in the run. The group has recently added seven new brands at their new High Street location and will have a friendly competition between the brands for the most participants. Both sites are committed to the annual Prostate Cancer Foundation fundraising event and committed to supporting the community through sponsorship of a range of sporting clubs, community groups and school events. Run For Dad is a great way for family members to be active together on Father’s Day, the group’s Jason Shay said. “We are delighted to be involved with an event that encourages people to lead a healthier lifestyle through being active,” he said. Despite Epsom having more team members, Mr Shay has thrown out the challenge, declaring that he expects the High Street location will have more participants in the run. Participants have the opportunity to challenge themselves in the 7.5km run or walk the 3.75km picturesque course at the Bendigo Racecourse. Breakfast is included in the entry and all participants will receive a participation medallion. For the serious runners, sashes are awarded in all sections. The run starts at 10am and the walk at 10.30am. Entry forms are available online at www.athleticsbendigo.org.au and all proceeds from the event will be donated to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Finding out the bigger picture on organic waste I am writing in response to some recent criticism about the new organics waste service to be operated by the City of Greater Bendigo, and its impact on local business Greenaway. The first point I would make is that Greenaway has been providing a valuable service for around 3000 households in Greater Bendigo and Mount Alexander Shire and I thank them for that. However, their service is different to the one the city will provide. Greenaway removes green waste only. The organics service to be operated by the city will include green waste, but also all other organic material such as vegetable peels, fruit scraps, fish, bones, meat, teabags, coffee grounds and cooked foods. The other difference is the number of people to receive the service. After a trial of 2800 households over six months, the city will cover all households in urban Bendigo, Heathcote, Elmore and Marong. Greenaway’s service is voluntary and they have indicated they would not have the capacity to supply the same service the city is proposing. Another point being made by some is that residents should already be composting their own organic waste and therefore an organics service is not required. While council applauds residents who do their own composting, the reality is that most people do not and many do not want to. Our data shows that 50 per cent of waste placed in resident’s rubbish bins is organic waste and it is currently going straight to landfill. This is unfortunate as rotting organic waste is the biggest cause of methane gas in our landfill. The trial of the organics service is being held to get feedback from the community: Should all households receive the service? Does there need to be an option not to have the service? How could that work? By separating out organic waste through a new organic waste service the city will not only extend the life of local landfills but will also reduce the city’s current and future financial and environmental liabilities that must be paid to the state government in the form of a levy on every tonne of waste that we put into our landfills. The council must consider the bigger picture and do what is right for the majority of its residents. To find out more about the service please visit www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/ organics Cr Peter Cox, Mayor
A precious freedom Bendigo is a great place to live. I was born and brought up here and I heartily agree. Lately, however, it seems we need to be reminded of this fact each and every day in the local media. I truly love this city and feel the need to speak out about something very subtle and yet insidious that I believe is gradually taking form in these times we live in. I write not about gay marriage or the building of mosques; I write with concern about the seeming erosion of free speech in this country. Your editorial “Airing of views” openly admits that the Bendigo Weekly has “come under fire” for not publishing certain material “put forward in opposition to marriage equality” and explains this by stating that it is the duty of the media to abide by their code of ethics in relation to the printing of material that is considered inflammatory, insensitive, inappropriate etc. I have no problem with that; there are far too many comments printed online every day that are expletive ridden, insulting and generally representative of the lowest common denominator. But pushing aside this obvious venom, who decides what letters in relation to, for instance, gay marriage are fit to be printed or not? Apart from at the polling booth, the voice of the ordinary Bendigonian can only ever really be expressed by writing a letter to the press. Who then is the arbiter of what shall be printed and what shall not? Your editorial plainly states “The editor”. But for any editor to decide which opinions are to be published and which are not, puts him or her in an almost godlike position. Where is the “cut off point”? The most precious freedom in a democracy is of course freedom of the individual. Second to that, and only just, is freedom of speech and freedom of the press. These are things we hold as sacrosanct. I earnestly believe that in recent times here in Bendigo there has been, albeit for the best of intentions, a “putting down” and censorship of views put forward by any individual who is “anti-anything”. Bear in mind, letters to the paper that are “pro-anything” are legion. Any different view (with some belatedly printed recent exceptions) are not considered. Evelyn Beatrice Hall is best remembered for her much quoted statement “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

Perhaps in these brave new “tolerant” times in Bendigo an ugly form of intolerance is gradually appearing against anyone brave enough to speak their mind in a calm, civilised and well thought out way? Eric Lakey, Bendigo
Falling by the kerbside Why does local small business Greenaway have to be sacrificed for the council to implement an organics kerbside collection service? Why does the mayor say “it’s disappointing that a private business will have to cease because of it”. Even the council’s own Waste and Resource Management Strategy document which it has adopted (2013/2014 Annual Report) says: “That a multi-program approach consisting of kerbside collection and education on the benefits and how to of composting and worm farming, results in the best organics diversion outcome. This is the approach supported by this strategy.” So why does the council not seek to include Greenaway? It’s clear that one solution does not suit all ratepayers. While many will want the full organic waste collection, many Greenaway customers have indicated they want a green waste only bin combined with other methods (eg worm farm, compost bin, chooks) to divert kitchen waste from their general garbage. Others may not even need such

a service at all. A multi-program approach will allow ratepayers flexibility in managing organic waste, satisfy all groups, minimise costs and maximise the chances of successfully reducing the region’s landfill requirements. Greenaway led the way in introducing a kerbside collection of green waste to Bendigo and the surrounding region nearly seven years ago. The company’s experience gained should not be ignored. Mary Martin, Epsom
Planned burns are wrong The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is planning another three years of widespread burns for Bendigo. What are these fires costing our public purse, what impacts are they having on Bendigo’s box ironbark forests, and how many fires have they stopped? We should know all these things. The 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission recommended annual reports to the community on: areas burnt, scientific studies on the impacts on biodiversity, and funds spent. These haven’t been done. The commission’s expert panel clearly stated that the five per cent prescribed burns regime was to be on a trial basis, and that there was very little scientific information available on the impacts of burns on animals and their habitats.
Big Hill National Park is soon to have four large burns, including one uphill of Crusoe Reservoir and No 7 National Parks, adjacent to an area burnt in 2009. Local community group, the Friends of Crusoe Reservoir and No 7 National Parks, carried out a bird survey there immediately after the prescribed burn. This year they re-surveyed this area. Six years later, they found the forest vegetation had not recovered. They counted only six bird species, the most common hardy survivors, such as magpies and red wattle birds. In the adjacent park section there was a diversity of vegetation with ground litter, understorey of lower and medium height shrubs, plus trees. Bendigo’s park ranger, with the help of this group, has counted more than 100 species of woodland birds in these parks. The simple message is, if you burn habitats and food sources, the birds will die. There is also the concern that sudden downpours of rain will wash fire debris downhill into Crusoe and No 7 National Parks, damaging more habitats for the water and woodland birds and other species there, and spoil the parks for Bendigo’s many recreational users. For more details on Bendigo’s burns and to send in a submission by August 31 go to loddonmallee@ plannedburning.delwp.vic.gov.au Gill Rosier, Lockwood

editorial varying degrees of ignorance. It’s a lack of respect for others, and a lack of respect for the law, and the system that has determined there is no reason for the planned mosque to not be approved. These actions have at times been defamatory of leaders of our community. The claims are often ridiculous, degrading and insulting. The Australian way of life is not what this group would have you think. And the willingness of others to be led, to believe, because they want to believe the fanciful claims of people who appear to not even reside in our city, is disappointing. A closed mind is a dan-
gerous thing. Claims by the group that they are protecting the Australian way of life are a joke. Australia is a nation where tolerance, respect and empathy are the common denominators of a democracy where freedom to practice one’s religion is also not only protected, but cherished and respected. The sickening claims and actions of individuals and groups this paper refuses to dignify by naming, are not welcome in Bendigo. Or anywhere else for that matter. So now a potential showdown looms this weekend. Rival groups –
one keen to show their support, the other their opposition, to a mosque, will gather in separate locations in our city’s CBD and there are very real concerns about what could occur. We implore both groups to exercise their right to gather and to protest peacefully, but to also respect everyone else’s right to do so as well, and for the rest of Bendigo to be left to enjoy their weekend. None of us should ever lose sight of what is not only right, but what is lawful, fair, decent and respectful. Because more than anything, these are the trademarks of the society we should aspire to be, and the Australia we should be proud to be part of.

THE Bendigo Metro Rail report released this month by the State Government provides confirmation of the community concept advanced for a decade to better use of infrastructure and give greater train connectivity for passengers across Bendigo and the suburbs. The concept that grew out of the strong community campaign to re-open Kangaroo Flat station and was followed by construction of the Epsom station last year is now closer to realisation. Bendigo’s communitydriven template supported by council and key local stakeholders can see our city the leader in developing 21st century transport options for major regional cities across Australia. The report provides technical solutions for increased services at Epsom, where the previous government had seriously erred by building a new station without providing the number of services to attract patronage, and with logical timetable proposals to increase access at Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk.

A dangerous thing AUSTRALIANS are blessed to live in a democracy where we have a right to disagree, and a right to protest in a peaceful, respectful and lawful manner. But recent amateurish attempts to desecrate the land upon which there are plans for Bendigo’s first mosque as an act of wouldbe sabotage are out of line. Such actions are a clear indicator of the intolerance that has been a trademark of this process. Some of the group’s antics have been plain stupid, dumb, ignorant and would even be funny and even embarrassing but for the serious nature of their intent. They indicate a lack of respect, underwritten by

Last week, I revisited an email received back in 2008 from a public service planning engineer retired to Bendigo imploring a halt to the Kangaroo Flat campaign. “Don’t get sucked in, he bluntly wrote, adding that Kangaroo Flat could not work because the station was in the wrong place to attract passengers. His prophesy was soon dispelled but highlights how easy it can be for government to say no and ignore a community.
Recommendations that include improved amenities at all four Bendigo stations in later stages cannot be left for an unknown time in the future. The report has a laudable focus on connecting urban bus services and bicycle paths to each of the stations. But not all passengers choose that mode of transport to arrive at railway stations. At Kangaroo Flat, for example, passengers driving to the transport hub have
The report has a laudable focus on connecting urban bus services The Bendigo intracity rail network concept has “lived through three governments and five premiers. Release of the report means government has almost caught up with community expectations and aspirations. However, the community is yet to learn when additional services at Bendigo suburban stations will be implemented and the timetable for each of the three stages put forward in the report.
increasingly faced an overflowing carpark most days since the station re-opened. They either park on a busy street without a designated pedestrian crossing or navigate a rough gravelled area near the derelict goods shed that is calling out for development. Eaglehawk station, too, has a severe shortage of parking in that precinct. A parking management plan may well identify options to safely develop part of the railway reserve for use.
Without adequate carparking, something Epsom certainly has at this time, the lack of access and convenience will be a deterrent for potential customers. The report omitted to record recommendations on access and opening hours of station buildings and use of facilities by waiting customers beyond the current limited hours. The creation of safe precincts will be as important to the success of Bendigo’s intra-city rail network as accessibility. Despite considering population projection and other economic data in arriving at its recommendations, the report missed a golden opportunity to fully paint the canvas for Bendigo’s rail network into the future. Nowhere in the report is there mention of the future needs of Maiden Gully and Marong, suburbs of growth on or near existing rail lines. It may be 10 or 20 years before these communities can or need to be connected to the network but with the pace of infrastructure planning and investment, they should have been flagged now.

Double trouble with Mrs K’s new workmate
I
THINK the long-suffering Mrs Kendall is wonderful, but now and again, and it’s happened twice, she meets a doppelganger. Kirsty is a fellow vet and has taken to visiting the Kendall retreat. KG and Mrs K chat about vetty things and very soon drift into medical depths I just cannot understand. What’s more disconcerting is KG, although being 25 years younger than Mrs K, is frighteningly similar in manner and attitude. It’s like Mrs K from the past, and just as feisty. So on these visiting days I cower in the corner or hide on the computer and let them yabber away about colleagues and tumors and blood results. There’s lots of bitching and whinging, but hey, they’re women. One way they do differ is in choice of dogs. Mrs K has a pug and a kelpie. KG has three po-
meranians. Mrs K describes them as rats on ropes, because they are tiny and annoying. I have yet to meet the poms, but am aware there could be a problem with KG and the little fluffy monsters. I make this statement based on the fact they have individual booster seats in the back of KG’s car. Enough said? At the end of last week KG turned up for a threeday stay as she was working in the area, Hotel Kendall was in full swing. KG leapt into cook mode as Mrs K had made it part of the deal, and soon the pot was bubbling away. It was at this point they started yabbering like twins. This means they were talking at the same time, but taking in the information. Like data transfer really. Despite being in Mrs K’s company for about 18 years there is no way I can tune

This went on for a while, and as it was about some vet thing I got a bit bored and tried to join in and change the subject. Can’t remember what I said but Mrs K stopped me dead. “And... back to me,” she said, suggesting all I talked
about was me. Then she went back to unintelligible chatter with KG. I tried again with no effect whatsoever, they just kept on chatting as if I wasn’t there. When they finally came up for air I took the opportunity to comment about my lack of input, or allowance of input.
KG finally turned to me and told me the reason. “We used to have a cockatoo at home, he used to chatter away all the time so in the end we just zoned him out,” she said. KG and Mrs K went back to vet talk, and I retired to my cage with ruffled feathers. - Steve Kendall Twitter@stevekendall1

It will be shown at Bendigo Market Place this October as part of their 20-year birthday celebration. “We are experimenting with breaking boundaries to open new avenues and engage different artists from central Victoria, and develop new audiences,” Pop Up Art director Sharon Seyd said. Included in the show are artists from Bendigo, as well as Mount Alexander, Macedon and Hepburn. Young and emerging artists are invited to participate by registering with Pop Up Art by September 25. ating new small works for the show. “Art Postcards is a great opportunity to get work out there and in front of audiences who might not usually see locally created art works,” he said. “Small art works can be really intimate. For some artists they might need to re-think their usual subject matter on a small scale or experiment with their chosen medium viewed on
a postcard format.” Shoppers at the marketplace will be able to view the local postcard sized art works from October 12 to 31. For more information and registration details local artists are encouraged to visit the Pop Up Art website popupart.com.au/postcards before September 25.

Bendigo LIFE
Colleen comes home I
N art, in film and, especially in music, you want to be moved. Once in a while, you hear a voice strike so deeply into your heart and mind, that you are transported to another world. A world of feeling and memory and imagination. Colleen Hewett’s voice does that. It may sound trite to say it but come to this performance and test it. Sit back, listen to Colleen sing and genuinely assess how great her voice is. It truly is one of the greatest voices Australia has produced. Even more so, now. The years
have added not detracted from her sound. Her sound, it is more than just a voice, hits you in the gut, heart and mind at the same time. It is moving, intoxicating, soothing and exciting. It fills you with pleasure and pathos simultaneously. Colleen’s music is genuinely cathartic. When you understand Colleen’s story, when you learn that she is a Bendigo girl, born and raised in Bendigo, her great grandfather an African-American boxer, an African-American in Bendigo circa 1950 – when you learn that, in her life, Colleen has experienced
hardship to match anyone’s hardship – when you hear that Colleen has experienced domestic violence and other abuse – when you listen to Colleen perform, knowing all that, and then you hear her voice soar above it all, you will understand that Colleen’s voice is not just her voice. It is the voice of many of us. It is the voice of many lives past and many lives inside her. Colleen Hewett comes home to Bendigo to sing her story from her number one blues album Black and White.

Comics have a fair day T
HE Bendigo Record Comic and Toy Fair is coming to town next month. The stage will be set at the Bendigo Showgrounds on September 20 for traders and dealers from local, state and interstate. More than 1000 people attended the bi-annual event which started last year. Organiser of this event Peter Pascoe said he is aiming for a Bendigo pop culture convention and is hoping for even more people to come. “This time around it is
more pop culture than a fair,” he said. Mr Pascoe has been collecting comics for 31 years and has collected about 21,000 and loves that there are ideas within comics that cannot be told in any other medium. The fair takes on aspects of an entertainment and pop culture expo, also hosting an artists alley and an exhibition zone. Also in the works are demonstration table-top games from the local
gaming association. A first for the fair is the cosplay contest which is an official fundraiser for the Peter MacCallum Foundation. Prizes will be awarded for the top three costumes. The registration fee is $5 and you can sign up via facebook or on the day, just make sure you’re dressed ready for the occasion. Entry is $4, giving access from 10am until 4pm. Early bird tickets are $10 with entry from 9am. Children under 14 are free.

Polished tale from the past
Charity for a miner A
BOUT 3000 Bendigonians crowded into the Royal Princess Theatre in View Street for a performance of the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders. This charitable benefit was being held to assist Fritz (Frederick) Uhrbrock. Mr Uhrbrock had met with a mining accident on the lease of the Great Southern Mine at Quarry Hill. The extensive claim of the Great Southern ran from Gladstone Street right into what is the now Quarry Hill Golf Course. This mine was located on the famous Garden Gully Line of Reef. On Friday September 12, 1879, a group of three miners, Andrew Ferguson, James Hilton and Mr Uhrbrock, were working together on night shift in the Victoria Queen Mine – the No 4 shaft of the Great Southern Company. The group of three miners were engaged in shaft sinking 152.5 metres underground, the haulage of the rock that they were breaking out was taken to 30 metres above where the men were working. The purpose of their work was to sink somewhat further to create a well where the ground water could be pumped from. After the well a cross-
cut was planned to be cut and then drives established so that a known reef could be intersected and mined. Ladders had not been placed in the last 30 metres of the shaft, so the only access and exit from where the men were doing the sinking was by means of the large bucket or kibble. This section of shaft had not as yet been timbered. At about 3am the shaft-sinking team was to have some crib at the 122-metre level. They had just got into the kibble and signalled the winch driver to take them to the 122-metre plat. After having their light meal the men descended again by the kibble and some six metres from the bottom they could see the dangerous condition of the rock, which the previous shift of men had warned them about. They descended back to the bottom, Ferguson and Uhrbrock were drilling a hole in the western side of the shaft while Hilton was loading the kibble with mullock to be taken up out of the way. The ground was in greasy slate between what miners referred to as two greasy backs. Without any warning a 20 tonne slab
of slate slid out and came down, Hilton just managed to jump clear, the falling rock crushed and partially buried the kibble. The large slab of stone did not fall over or break up, thus all lives were spared. Uhrbrock then tried to untie the rope at the shackling. While trying to undo the shackling a second lot of rock came down. At the second rock fall Hilton and Ferguson both received cuts but Uhrbrock was partially buried and with all haste his mates freed him. The steel rope was cut with a cold chisel, a loop was made and the injured Uhrbrock was lashed in securely so he could be hoisted up. When at the surface Uhrbrock was taken to the hospital, his extremities were badly mutilated, he had broken bones and internal injuries. Fritz was 36 years of age, he and his wife had eight children, he was operated on at the hospital and it was expected Uhrbrock would be in the institution for many months. The large Uhrbrock family was in a desperate situation with no income
My Life in Ruins Adam Ford ABC Books
W
ORLD traveller and TV presenter Adam Ford’s life is anything but shabby, contrary to his memoir’s cheeky play on words. In his autobiography English-born Ford revisits his earliest schoolboy encounter with the field of science that would one day become both his livelihood and his enduring passion: archaeology. This raw and colourful account carries readers from Ford’s training dig as a student on a beach in Barbados through the Middle East and Britain en route to his present-day incarnation as a TV host and director of his own archaeological operation in Australia. Along the way he returns repeatedly to Jordan, uncovering Bronze Age, Nabatean and Ottoman remains in the Biblical heartland, confronting fearsome fist-sized spiders, shivering through desert snowstorms and running the gauntlet of unreliable or non-existent plumbing on sites devoid of the cosy trappings of a standard 21st-century workplace. His research into a reported French claim to land in the 1700s and a Dutch vessel’s 1841 wrecking on
BENEFIT PERFORMER: Baritone A Tawse. hence the benefit. A varied program was put together by the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders with the multi-talented A Tawse being one of the many artists to perform. His rich deep baritone voice rendered the song, Nellie Ray, he was also a very accomplished actor. As with a number of the other Ethiopian Serenaders, Mr Tawse was also a member of the “Liedertafel”. The benefit for the Uhrbrock family was deemed an outstanding success. The patrons were very happy, as was the financial side of the evening which gave a touch of joy to a desperate family courtesy of the Ethiopian Serenaders.
Dirk Hartog Island off the West Australian mainland is recounted, as is his monthlong project in 2008 to excavate Annie Jones’ inn at Glenrowan where the Kelly Gang, when surrounded by police, staged its last stand. Ford delivers a tale that is simultaneously a jaunty, entertaining and irreverently humorous travelogue and a potted history of archaeology’s emergence as a modernday academic discipline of global significance. Now in his third season hosting Who’s Been Sleeping In My House? for the ABC, Ford outlines with more than a pinch of mirth the chain of good fortune that helped create his media career. His summary of the colonial penal system is of particular relevance to Victorian readers; Bendigo stars in his search for everyday goldfield remnants around Golden Gully, where a man’s leather hat is found to have survived more than a century and a half underground.

the brilliant fi rst novel from
DIANNE DEMPSEY After 20 years of analysing what’s right and what’s wrong about other people’s books, it takes courage to bring out a novel of your own. But Dianne Dempsey delivers her tale of love, family, trauma and a girl from the wrong side of the tracks with an unerring mix of comedy and poignancy. The smoothest moves everytime. Local, country and interstate.
C
ENTRAL Victoria Removals have been relocating clients for more than 40 years all over Australia. While many businesses come and go, Central Victoria Removals has stood the test of time. Locals Andrew and Vicky Tierney along with sons Matt and Nick have owned Central Victoria Removals since 2005 and have worked diligently, to become one of the most respected removals businesses in Central Victoria. Central Victoria Removals are specialists in not only local, interstate and international removals but also business relocations, office relocations and insurance moves. Moving can be a very stressful time especially when you are trusting complete strangers to move your furniture and effects that you have worked so hard to obtain over the years. Thousands of dollars have been
spent purchasing your furniture so the last thing you want is for a removal company to damage your goods in transit. The saying “You get what you pay for” is ever so true in the removal industry. While Central Victoria Removals may not be the cheapest company in Bendigo, the quality and service they offer is second to none. Central Victoria Removals pride themselves on their image and have clean, well-maintained trucks, as well as uniformed staff that are well presented and experienced removalists. From the very first phone call to when the last piece of furniture is delivered, Andrew or Vicky will be in constant contact to make sure your move goes according to plan. For a free no obligation quote for your next move, phone Andrew or Vicky at Central Victoria Removals on 5448 3399, or call into their depot at 39 Howard Street, Epsom.

Go ahead for points By JOEL PETERSON AFL Victoria’s proposed player points system will be introduced to local football next season. AFL Victoria announced on Monday that its Community Club Sustainability Policy would be introduced in 2016, after several clubs and leagues had expressed uncertainty as to whether the plan would be implemented. The proposed salary cap will be aimed for 2017, but a statewide points system will come into play next year after being trialled by clubs this season. Recently, several clubs had expressed uncertainty as to whether the points system
would be in place next season. However, AFL Victoria’s Brett Connell confirmed that the points system would be implemented next year, and a salary cap was likely to go ahead the following season. “Feedback from leagues and commissions was comprehensive and overwhelmingly supportive of a system that addresses equalisation concerns in community football and tackles escalating player payments,” he said. “The working party will now look to finalise (the policy) with a view of releasing it in September to allow clubs time to determine an appropriate recruiting strategy.
“In response to wide ranging feedback from clubs and leagues, there will be some minor changes to the draft policy tested during 2015 but it will fundamentally remain based on categorising players by their playing history and achievements.” Connell said he remained confident that the policy would be adopted statewide next year. The policy aims to ease the squeeze on clubs recruiting players, promoting player loyalty and junior development. “The working party remains confident the policy will be adopted statewide and will work with leagues and region commissions to develop regional
strategies that cater for the individual challenges faced by clubs and leagues,” he said. “The working party will continue to work with leagues and clubs on the formation of a comprehensive salary cap policy and envisage it to being operational in the vast majority of leagues by 2017. “Any policy will be accompanied by an extensive education program outlining the roles and responsibilities of clubs and leagues and include enforcement provisions.” AFL Victoria has also applied to the AFL to allow player transfers before Christmas. Clearances are currently not able to be approved until February.
Final spot in balance BRIDGEWATER will find out its 2015 Loddon Valley Football League grand final opponent this weekend when Bears Lagoon-Serpentine and Mitiamo meet at Marong in the league’s preliminary final. Serpentine was belted by Bridgewater by an astonishing 108 points in last week’s second semi final, while Mitiamo recorded a stirring 24-point win over Pyramid Hill last Sunday. The win marked another disappointing end to a finals campaign for the Bulldogs, who exited in straight sets after finishing second in the home and away campaign. For the third week in a row Korey Fulton made a big contribution for Mitiamo kicking five goals, but the side’s recent run of success has come down to its defence. The Super Roos held a highscoring Pyramid Hill side to just nine goals last week, after only conceding four majors against Calivil United in the elimination final. In A-grade netball Calivil United and YCW meet to play Pyramid Hill in next week’s decider. Meanwhile, Bridgewater coach

Andrew Collins took a decisive win in Wednesday night’s Harding Medal as the league’s best and fairest player in 2015. Collins polled 27 votes to win the award for the first time, ahead of Mitiamo’s Doug Thomas and Newbridge midfielder Jordan Gilboy. Collins also won the league’s goalkicking award. Bears Lagoon-Serpentine’s Sarah Perry won her second A-grade best and fairest medal ahead of another former winner, YCW’s Leisa Barry. A RED-HOT Colbinabbin will face off with the Heathcote Districty Football League’s top side LeitchvilleGunbower in a blockbuster second semi final on Saturday at Heathcote. The Grasshoppers, winners of 10 of their past 11 games, defeated North Bendigo in last week’s qualifying final by 30 points. After a week off Leitchville will be fighting fit and ready to fire for a grand final spot. North Bendigo takes on White HIlls at Colbinabbin on Sunday in the elimination semi final.
EAGLEHAWK’S hopes of a top-three finish rely on a big win ahead of a clash with Sandhurst on Saturday at Canterbury Park. The two sides are separated by four points and 11.37 per cent, with fourth-placed Eaglehawk aiming for the double chance while Sandhurst will need to bounce back after copping a hiding from Golden Square last week. The Dragons were thumped to the tune of 84 points by a ruthless Golden Square at the Queen Elizabeth Oval last weekend while Eaglehawk smashed Maryborough by 186 points. Eaglehawk would need to win by around 10 goals to bridge the gap to the Dragons, and set up a clash with Golden Square in the first week of finals. Kyneton can lock up its first finals finish since 2003 with a win over cellar dweller Maryborough. The Magpies have copped 100-point beating in their last seven games, while Kyneton suffered a last quarter letdown last week when they were narrowly beaten by Kangaroo Flat. The Tigers led the Roos all day but fell over in the last quarter to lose by three points. A win would have sealed up a finals place for the club. The most unlikely of losses for the Tigers could potentially open the door for Castlemaine to make finals, but the league’s other Magpies would have to beat Golden Square handily to be any chance. In other round 18 BFNL games Strathfieldsaye plays South Bendigo and Kangaroo Flat hosts Gisborne.

Classic hits the road BENDIGO cycling’s biggest oneday classic will hit the roads of Emu Creek this Sunday, when a bumper field of 101 riders contests the annual Rob Vernon Memorial. The race was taken out by Blackburn’s Brendan Cahill last year, and will again be contested with senior riders joining two junior categories on the day. After starting in Strathfieldsaye, riders will head along Axe Creek Road to Metcalfe before a challenging hilly section on the road to Redesdale. The peloton will then head back to Strathfieldsaye past Lake Eppalock, finishing on Emu Creek Rd at the Emu Creek Tennis Courts. Bendigo’s Sam Crome, Glenn O’Shea, Robbie Hucker and Jason Lea are some of the big names to be starting the race off the scratch mark. Horsham’s Mark O’Brien, Allan Satchell, Lucas Hamilton, Alex

Morgan, Mark Jamieson, David Kelly and Nathan Elliott are the race’s other’s scratch markers. The five-minute group includes the like of national high perfor-
mance track coach Tim Decker, Peter Casey, Taylor Anstee and Tasman Nankervis. Big fields will also contest the day’s two junior races. The junior
11 to 13-year-old race will be held over 11km, with the 13 to 15-yearold race over 35km. All three races start at 11am on Sunday morning.
“The boys were a bit flat on Tuesday night, but there is no question that they will be ready to go on Saturday. “The positive is that we have given ourselves the double chance and we get to play in front of our home crowd who always support us. “We need to start well and make sure that if we do have any lapses they are only for a minute before we get back on track, because we can’t afford anything longer than that or they will make us pay.” Saturday night’s game at Bendigo Stadium tips off at 7pm. The Bendigo Lady Braves will also host a home final next Saturday against Kilsyth at Bendigo Stadium.
Strathdale sits on the top spot STRATHDALE’S recent run of dominance in the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League championship continued after the Blues clinched a third straight title last weekend. Strathdale sits seven points clear atop the table with three games to play, and with Eaglehawk having the round 12 bye can not be overtaken in the title race. The Blues have en-

joyed a dominant season, winning nine of 10 games and conceding only six goals all year while hitting the back of the net a whopping 40 times. They scored a 1-0 win over Eaglehawk last week to seal the deal after Lonain Burnett scored in the first half and the Blues held on to the early advantage. Burnett and Jon Bryers have both had stand-
out seasons in attack for the Blues, scoring eight and nine goals respectively this season. Third-placed Epsom also defeated the winless Golden City and Moama belted Spring Gully 4-1. Eaglehawk takes on Epsom this Sunday in its bid to finish runners-up again, with the Scorpions sitting just three points behind the secondplaced Hawks.
The last time they met the two sides played out a 1-1 draw, but Eaglehawk will be determined to take three points out of the contest. Strathdale will be in party mode when the Blues take on Moama at Beischer Park. In the weekend’s other game, Colts United takes on Spring Gully while Golden City has the bye.

Braves step up
THE Bendigo Braves face a do or die clash this Saturday night against North West Tasmania as the side aims to keep its South East Australian Basketball League title hopes alive. The Braves headed to Mount Gambier last week and were beaten by 17 points, but late lapses cost the Braves dearly. There is no shortage of motivation for the Braves to win this week, with Ben Harvey’s 500th game as a player and coach coinciding with Braves legend Chris Hogan’s 350th game as a player. Harvey said the team needs to step up and not allow the type of lapse that hurt them last week. “We played great basketball for three and a half quarters last week, and then they blew us out late,” he said.
“We executed out scout well early, got them into foul trouble and did everything we needed to put us in a winning position late in the game. “We led most of the game and there was just a patch when for three and a half or four minutes they went on a 14-0 run.
