Bendigo Weekly – Friday, September 25, 2015

A YOUNG Bendigo agent took first place at the Victorian Young Auctioneers Competition on Monday. McKean McGregor’s Zeb Broadbent won the event with Jamie Quinlan of Elders Pakenham named as runner-up. Zeb and Jamie will now continue to work on their selling style as they will represent Victoria at the 2016 ALPA National Young Auctioneers Competition to be held at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. They will compete against other state finalists for the title of ALPA 2016 National Young Auctioneer and the opportunity to represent Australia at the International Livestock Auctioneer Championships held at the Calgary Stampede in Canada. Each auctioneer sold their three lots while being judged by a panel of three auctioneers from within the industry. They were marked on diction, values, voice and manner, as well as their presence and unique style. “The competition was such a success. The talent on display is a testament to the hard work, dedication and training the competitors have put towards their profession,” ALPA president Dave Corcoran said.

IN yet another busy weekend for local agents, a bevy of properties are scheduled to go under the hammer this weekend as the spring selling season continues. The Professionals have a large (approximately) 1360 square metre allotment set on two titles at 151 Rowan Street, Bendigo to be auctioned from 1.30pm Saturday. There’s a current planning permit for four double storey townhouses applicable to the site, which is directly behind the St John of God hospital and within walking distance of the CBD. The Professionals also have a double storey four bedroom townhouse at 41 Uley Street in the hospital precinct, close to Lake Weeroona, local parks, the gallery, theatre and of course the CBD. This executive townhouse is set to be auctioned at 11.30am Saturday. Elders Bendigo have a weatherboard home offering up to three bedrooms, set on approximately 663 square metres at 57 Powells Avenue, East Bendigo, to be auctioned from 10am Saturday onsite. The property has previously been used as offices, and is zoned Industrial 3. Elders also has a rare opportunity to purchase a 2.75 hectare (approx.) site at 316-318 High Street, Kangaroo Flat at auction from 1pm, Wednesday, Septem-

ber 30, and a stunning farmlet on about 7.3 acres at 551 Axe Creek Road, Axe Creek which is scheduled for auction from 12pm Saturday. This beautiful property features four bedrooms, the main having a four-piece ensuite. The property offers a great dream lifestyle opportunity within 20 minutes of the CBD, with extensive shedding, separate studio and workshop and a wonderful garden and rockery. CR Martin has a beautifully renovated three bedroom home at 21 Heinz Street, White Hills up for auction from 11am Saturday. This home also features polished pine boards, large bedrooms, a stunning bathroom and ornate fireplaces. Tweed Sutherland First National has a California bungalow at 28 Havlin Street West, Bendigo to auction from 11am Saturday. THE latest Housing Industry Association- Colorbond steel Housing 100 Report highlights further growth in dwelling commencements for Australia’s largest volume builders in 2014/15. HIA chief economist, Dr Harley Dale said the total number of Housing 100 starts increased for a third straight year in 2014/15 with a total of 68,621 dwellings. “This is the second highest number of Housing 100 starts on record,” Dr Dale said. “The Housing 100 started 47,929 detached houses in 2014/15. The nation’s largest 100 builders also commenced 20,692 multi-units and semi-detached dwellings, a new record for the Housing 100.” He said the focus would now turn to building on a strong new residential cycle through vital economic and taxation reform to ensure sufficient housing supply is maintained in coming decades to house Australia’s growing and ageing population.

Long road ahead for NDIS Amicus chief executive AnnMaree Davis said while the group welcomed the announcement, there was considerable work to be done in determining how the NDIS would take shape. “Amicus, like many other service providers around the state, are happy to have the implementation plan for the NDIS finally release,” Ms Davis said. “There’s still a lot of work to do, and there’s still a lot of detail to be determined. But for some of the more major issues like workforce, we’ve now got something to be able to work towards. “There’s is still some uncertainty about the national framework and what it will look like.”

Golden City Support Service’s Chris Sing said the NDIS would give people with disability increased funding and increased choices on how the money is spent.

DISABILITY service providers have welcomed an announcement giving a starting date for the National Disability Insurance Scheme in central Victoria, but say there is a long road ahead before the region is ready. Last week Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters and Victorian premier Daniel Andrews announced the NDIS will be rolled out in central Victoria on May 1 2017. On Monday the Bendigo Disability Housing Working Group met with Ms Chesters and State Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards to discuss what the start date means for local disability service providers.

as a result of increased competition, Mr Sing said they welcomed the changes regardless. “We welcome choice – we think of the people involved in the NDIA very much as consumers,” he said. “People will be welcome to go and purchase services just like you and me.

Ms Chesters said with the announcement of a starting date, local services could begin planning for the change. “There was shock that we’ve got a date, and a bit of nervousness because we’ve got a bit of work to do on the ground, a lot of planning to do,” she said. She also shared concerns about the lack of an appointment of a federal disability minister during the recent cabinet reshuffle, as she predicts some difficulty in future lobbying. “To lose that opportunity and access, I’m now worried about who I talk to,” Ms Chesters said. “If it’s the health minister, that’s a big portfolio.” - Laura Hurley

La Trobe Bendigo in $50m revamp

Spring in their step

LA Trobe University’s Bendigo campus is set for a $50 million makeover as part of a rejuvenation project announced on Wednesday. Vice chancellor John Dewar said around $50m would be spent at the Bendigo campus over five years, with a new dedicated engineering building and a new bus interchange at the top of the list. Five projects will immediately get the go ahead as part of a new master plan to rejuvenate the campus over 15 years. In addition to the new engineering building and bus interchange, La Trobe’s Bendigo campus will also receive a new entry plaza, renovations and extension of its existing library and lighting on the campus sports field. Professor Dewar said the plan spanned across all of La Trobe’s campuses, however Bendigo would be the only one to receive a new building. “Bendigo is the only one of our campuses at which we are planning a new building,” he said. Prof Dewar said work would begin immediately on the construction of the bus interchange, while work on the new engineering building was still in its stages. “(It’s) going to take a while to plan and develop that building, get it designed and put it out to tender,” he said. “But the planning work on that will start immediately. “The work on that building needs to be completed so

SPRING is here despite how it may seem with the lower temperatures in Bendigo this week. But, the tulips have certainly come to the party adding a magical blaze of colour to Rosalind Park. The conservatory formed a perfect backdrop for Weekly photographer Andrew Perryman to catch a moment in a couple’s white wedding on Saturday – balloons and all. It was a busy day elsewhere in the park and residents and visitors made the most of the brighter day and warmer weather to finally say farewell to the long winter.

we can then begin work on other projects announced (on Wednesday). “Particularly a library extension and a new entry plaza to the campus, which will be next to the bus interchange.” Prof Dewar said the new engineering building would help students become workplace ready.

A library extension and a new entry plaza to the campus “We’ve completely redesigned our engineering degree,” he said. “We’ve done so in particular through discussions with the Bendigo Manufacturing Group and we’re delighted with the support that we’re receiving from that group to deliver our new degree, particularly through work experience and work placement for our new students. “It’s great news for the community because there will be very well qualified students emerging from these facilities.” He said the five projects were the result of extensive community consultation.

Belief unites Bendigo

Bendigo community, religious, political and business leaders have united to promote the city’s reputation as a diverse, welcoming and tolerant city. The group has been working behind the scenes to create a campaign for diversity and inclusion. They say Believe in Bendigo is the start of a long-running push to fight back against intolerance and hate. The campaign started via social media last weekend with a surge of support from the community. Bendigo resident and Believe in Bendigo spokesman Damian Wells said the episodes of blatant negativity and hatred that have recently occurred in Bendigo were not representative of the views and attitudes of the vast majority of everyday residents. “It is clear that the general community can sense that recent protests are damaging Bendigo’s reputation as a vibrant, welcoming community with a high performing economy,” he said. “Enough is enough. We believe in Bendigo. Hatred, violence and

embrace: Believe in Bendigo members. abuse are not welcome here. “The Bendigo community is standing up for diversity and inclusion.” Mr Wells said it was now time for everyone who had been quietly going about their business in recent

months without outwardly demonstrating support for inclusion and diversity, to stand up and show support. Fellow Believe in Bendigo group member Jayson Tayeh said the campaign would show Bendigo’s true,

smiling face. “It will show the world we embrace diversity, we welcome difference and we reject hatred,” he said. “Bendigo, like the rest of Australia, has a long and proud history of inclusion and of embracing di-

versity.” Mr Tayeh said Bendigo had boomed after the commercialisation of gold, on the back of immigrant workers. “All these diverse cultures have contributed greatly to make this city the place it is today,” he said. “This history can’t be ignored. Yvonne Wrigglesworth said Believe in Bendigo included people from all walks of life. “Believe in Bendigo includes leaders from all Bendigo faiths and all Christian congregations. It includes representatives from all sides of politics and from all suburbs,” she said. “We love this city and we are fiercely determined for our amazing community and economy to continue to thrive in our increasingly global and connected world.” The group has started a facebook page and twitter account so people can show their support, and are planning a series of events, starting on October 2 in the Library Gardens, to showcase Bendigo and its sense of community. 4opinion Page 15

Business shows faith in community cue was to celebrate diversity and peace. “We want to show our happiness and that we can respect and be at peace together in the community in Bendigo,” Mr Febriyanto said. Following a ceremony in morning, he said the Halal barbecue was to mark Eid Al-Adha.

“It is the story of when our prophet Abraham, he got a commandment from Allah to sacrifice his son,” Mr Febriyanto said. “(Here) you can see the people come from different backgrounds, different nationalities and different faiths – to celebrate.”

which create so many jobs for local regions can be affected in that way.” He said he believed Bendigo is resilient and will be able to recover from the economic impacts of the protests. “Bendigo is a very resilient city, they’ve proven that time and time again,” Mr Eren said. “There is concern about where this will land and so forth, but I think we’ve got to be vigilant and we’ve got to be strong about this. “And I know that 99.9 per cent of the people are great people, who embrace diverse and new ways of life… By and large that’s the Bendigo spirit.” Bendigo Winegrowers Association spokesman Cliff Stubbs said many of the wineries would remain open over the weekend, and encouraged locals and tourists alike to enjoy a local drop. “Many wineries will be open on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October and we invite locals and tourists to experience what the wine region has to offer. Let’s put Bendigo wine on our tables,”Mr Stubbs said. The anti-mosque protesters suffered another setback this week when a bid to the Court of Appeal for an injunction on works starting at the proposed site was dismissed.

TOURISM and major events minister John Eren has condemned the actions of some anti-mosque protesters following the cancellation of Bendigo’s iconic Heritage Uncorked. The wine festival, scheduled for Saturday, October 10, has been cancelled due to antimosque protests set to take place in Bendigo’s CBD on the same day. The Bendigo Winegrowers Association estimated the region will lose around $500,000 from tourists’ back pockets due to the cancellation. In town this week to speak at Bendigo Tourism’s annual general meeting, Mr Eren said it was “an absolute shame” the event had been scrapped. “I would condemn any violent protests that would occur which have adverse impacts on our local economy,” he said. “If some of these people, as I call them, pretty radical, are causing this sort of damage to our economy the way that they are, democracy is one thing. “But if they want to peacefully demonstrate, that is totally okay – it is part of our democracy. But if they want disrupt in a violent and angry way, our normal way of life, I think that’s just not acceptable. “And to that end it’s an absolute shame that such festivals

Garrett books into Bendigo

BENDIGO Writers Festival is building on the success of this year’s event by hosting authors on tour with popular new books. The first BWF Bookmark event will be on October 17, when Midnight Oil frontman turned politician Peter Garrett will talk about his memoir, Big Blue Sky. He will be in conversation at the Town Hall with Bendigo Weekly managing editor Peter Kennedy, about everything from the power of music to the state of the nation. On November 27, actor and

comedian Magda Szubanski heads to Bendigo, to talk about her memoir, Reckoning. In conversation with festival artistic director, Rosemary Sorensen, Ms Szubanski’s book reveals secrets about her Polish father as well as the complex road she travelled to become one of Australia’s best loved performers. “The Bookmark events are a good way for the festival to keep providing our audiences with quality entertainment based on

books and writing,” Ms Sorensen said. “We have an excellent range of venues in Bendigo, and enthusiastic people who are keen to keep up with all the latest writing, so we don’t want them to miss out when big new books are published. “We expect both the Peter Garrett and Magda Szubanski events will be terrific entertainment.” Mr Garrett resigned from the Labor ministry in July 2013, when Julia Gillard was deposed as Prime Minister, and there have

been rumours ever since of a Midnight Oil revival. Drummer Rob Hirst told a music magazine that, while there were “no definite plans”, they were hoping to talk to their 62-year-old frontman once his memoir was published. Tickets for both Bookmark events are available at The Capital, online through gotix.com.au or by calling the Box Office on 5434 6100. BOOKED: Peter Garrett.

OUT AND ABOUT BENDIGO residents are being encouraged to experience spring in Bendigo’s bush by attending a free open day at a Myrtle Creek property on Saturday. The bush around Bendigo is alive and vibrant with new growth. Chris Kirwan, sponsored by the Axe Creek Landcare Group, will open his property to the public from 10am to 4pm to encourage conservation. Young codebreakers are bright sparks BENDIGO tramways has launched their new school holiday activity, Crack the Code. Crack the Code will see tram riders stepping aboard the city’s iconic talking trams and hopping off at different routes to solve five clues. Bendigo Trust’s Evonne Ox-

enham says the Crack the Code challenge was a great way for families to get out of the house and enjoy Bendigo. “The aim of Crack the Code is to encourage families to spend some quality together exploring our beautiful city while enjoying the warmer Spring

weather,” she said. “Bendigo has a history of being one of the richest producers of gold in the world. “This is why we have chosen Going for Gold as the theme for the inaugural Crack the Code challenge.” Participants who complete

the challenge will go into the draw to win a $1000 gold hamper which includes a gold nugget and Bendigo Cinemas Gold Class gift card, among other things. Crack the Code will be running until October 4 with tickets available at $51 for families.

NIGHT markets are coming to Bendigo this spring and summer, with the first moonlight market scheduled for this Saturday evening in the Hargreaves Mall. Between 5pm and 9pm, the mall will be filled with live music and art, street performers, a huge range of stalls featuring arts and crafts, vintage finds, food producers and local businesses. All in one great location on a beautiful summer’s night. Organisers say the market will bring Hargreaves Mall alive every month with a new night market that has something for everyone.

Festival a bestseller THE final analysis of this year’s spectacularly successful Bendigo Writers Festival has revealed that ticket sales doubled in 2015, with a strong program attracting increased audiences. “There were more than 3000 tickets sold to people attending sessions across the weekend,” general manager of The Capital Theatre and the festival, David Lloyd, said. “Many of those tickets were for multiple sessions, and there were also our free schools day events on the Friday plus the fringe

festival at Bendigo Library. The total attendance was over 9,000, which is a really pleasing result.” He said the festival this year improved ticketing and venue management and will return a balanced budget. “It’s a big and complex event to stage, and it relies on a lot of hard work including that of volunteers, so we’re very proud of what we have already achieved,” Mr Lloyd said. “We want to be sure the success of the festival continues and that means

monitoring how we do things to be sure both our writers and audiences have a really good time. The feedback this year was overwhelmingly positive. The festival presented more than 70 events, from small workshops for groups of 10 or 20 people to keynote speakers in Ulumbarra Theatre. The closing event in the Capital Theatre with satirist John Clarke and artist John Wolseley was booked out. City of Greater Bendigo city futures director Stan

Liacos said the result exceeded expectations. “The festival is only four years’ old and, with the assistance of our partners, La Trobe University, has already become wellknown and highly respected,” he said. “Our excellent venues in and around View Street give us the capacity to create quality events, and the writers festival is now firmly established in Bendigo’s cultural calendar.” Next year’s Bendigo Writers Festival is scheduled for August 12-14.

fuelling ideas: The groups conduct the ceremonial burn.

Partnership fires up MEMBERS from the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation joined rangers from parks Victoria and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning in a historical planned burn-off in the Bendigo National Park last Friday. The burn-off involved a ceremonial lighting of the fuel reduction burn, marking the first planned burn off since the partnership between Parks Victoria and the Dja Dja Wurrung ACA was formalised last year. DELWP Murray Goldfields district manager Paul Bates said the partnership allowed the traditional owners of the land to be involved in the natural resource management of the area. “The partnership we have

with Parks Victoria and Dja Dja Wurrung is based on the fact that the Dja Dja Wurrung has managed the forest for thousands of years, so the community has a vast knowledge and expertise in caring for the land,” Mr Bates said. The first ceremonial lighting was earmarked as a significant moment in the partnership between the groups. “For us this is the first ceremonial lighting we’ve done and we’re all really interested and very keen to learn,” Mr Bates said. “The significance of this...is really starting to work closely together in applying fire to the land and understanding the practices they used over a long time to improve our processes.”

BENDIGO-based cycling identity Scott McGrory this week celebrated the 15th anniversary of his famous gold medal victory in the Madison track event at the Sydney Olympics. Fifteen years on, that emotional win, shared with Madison partner Brett Aitken, is seen as more important and relevant than ever. “The more I reflect on it, the more it means to me, because of the hardships we all went through,” he said. McGrory and wife Donna lost their son Alexander just 10 weeks before the Sydney Olympics, and the affable McGrory credits Donna for inspiring him to push himself towards his eventual date with destiny and one of the most emotional and inspiring gold medal victories of the Sydney games. Aitken’s daughter Ashli was born with a rare neurological disorder that affects mobility and communication – she could neither walk nor talk, and she passed away in 2009. The personal hardships that the cycling mates endured, with their families, forged an incredible bond between McGrory and Aitken, and a deep-seated mutual respect as they tried to remain focused on their Olympic goal. The pair also went on to win successive Bendigo International Madison races in 2001 and 2002. These days, McGrory is an integral part of the Bendigo cycling community, and describes himself as a recreation cyclist, and a part of the Bendigo community he enjoys giving back to, such as working on the Bendigo International Madison committee. This week, a reflective McGrory confirmed the connection between he and Aitken, now a coach at the

McGrory’s biggest regret was not going on to defend his Olympic title four years later in Athens, but his life-long love of and service to the sport of cycling continues. He now hosts his own cycling show – Subaru Full Cycle, on Fox Sports, and also works as the television host for the acclaimed Subaru National Road Series. “It’s fantastic that Subaru is backing the sport of cycling, both at the

national level and also locally via the team at Innes Motors Bendigo,” McGrory said. McGrory said Subaru’s national support for cycling was important to helping the sport continue to boom, while at the local level, the support of Innes Motors as a long time backer of the Bendigo International Madison was integral. The company also provides McGrory with a vehicle to help him fulfill his busy schedule as a cycling commentator and TV host. “I am just rapt and grateful to be working with people who really love and appreciate cycling,” he said.

IF you go into the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise – everything is made of felt. The Felted Forest has come to Bendigo as part of the City of Greater Bendigo’s Children’s Art in the Conservatory program. Elmore artist Mary Hoare was commissioned by council to create a world of plants, frogs, bugs and other hand felted creations in the Rosalind

Park Conservatory, to encourage visitors to hunt for critters and creatures. Council arts officer Rohan Phillips said the Felted Forest was the sixth children’s art installation to be placed in the conservatory. “Each year the popularity of the program continues to grow with last year’s Strange Garden exhibition attracting more than 2000 visitors over 11 days,” Mr Phillips said.

Ms Hoare said her aim was to create an environment where kids could play and interact with the installation. “I want them to be inspired by how the bright colours, different textures, animals and bugs interact with each other and work together,” she said. Felted Forest will be open daily from 11am to 3pm from today to Sunday, October 4. Entry is free.

BENDIGO shoppers had an unexpected surprise this week, with four members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performing for curious on-lookers inside the Telstra Store in Mitchell Street. An important alliance between the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Capital Venues and Events aims to bring the MSO to Bendigo every year for major public performances, as well as various opportunities to engage with its world-class musicians. Members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra visited Bendigo to work with the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra and to perform at a fundraising dinner at Ulumbarra Theatre on Wednesday night. Members of the MSO also joined Bendigo Symphony rehearsals to conduct workshops and provide an invaluable experience for our dedicated local musicians. A fundraising campaign to offset the MSO’s regional touring costs has been underway for some time, and recently received a significant boost from Telstra in Bendigo. Telstra’s Nick Papaz said his business had a fantastic partnership with Ulumbarra Theatre and was thrilled to support the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in coming to Bendigo. Capital Venues and Events manager David Lloyd said he was keen to ensure that the MSO continues to tour to regional Victoria, in particular Bendigo. “Capital Venues and Events is thrilled to see local businesses and individuals support our campaign to bring the MSO to Bendigo.’’ The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performs at Ulumbarra Theatre, Bendigo on Thursday October 15.

Clubs share in sports grants

TALENT: Father Rob Galea.

By LAURA HURLEY

Rob X-its competition FATHER Rob Galea has withdrawn from the X Factor, citing pastoral commitments at his parish. Fr Rob chose to depart the competition during the boot camp phase, which required him to remain in Sydney for a period of time away from his parish at St Kilian’s, Bendigo. He said the competition had been greatly rewarding, and an excellent opportunity to evangelise to a broad audience. “While I am so grateful for the opportunity to have auditioned, got through

to boot camp and worked with a wonderful team of contestants and judges, I have decided, through my own will, to leave the Australian X Factor competition,” he said. “I have looked at my pastoral, church, music and touring commitments for the rest of the year and found that I cannot reasonably honour both the competition and these. “Even though some may argue that this is an evangelisation opportunity missed, my first commitment is to my relation-

ship with God and to the church to whom I am already committed. Fr Rob said it was after much prayer and careful consideration that he decided to enter the competition. “I am glad I did. It has been a wonderful experience getting to work among such great professionalism, be surrounded by wonderful people and have this opportunity to share my hope and vocation beyond the confines of the ‘church circles’,” he said.

LOCAL football and netball clubs in need of new and improved facilities have been invited to step up for a new round of grants funding by the Victorian government. Minister for Sport John Eren visited the Queen Elizabeth Oval this week with Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards to announce that applications for the Country Football and Netball Program were now open. The grants, worth up to $100,000 each, are for facility improvements such as change room upgrades, court refurbishments, ground resurfacing works or lighting installation. Mr Eren described local sport as the “lifeblood of our community”, and encouraged local clubs to apply. “It is the glue that builds the social fabric of our society and it’s so important to make sure that the up and coming talent have facilities in place which will see them play at the iconic grounds like the MCG,” he said. “All of these youngsters,

they will aspire to play, like Joel Selwood, like Greg Williams and many other that have come from this region, to plan on those iconic grounds. “But in order to do that

...that’s why it’s so important to make sure we have funds in place we need great local facilities and that’s why it’s so important to make sure we have funds in place that will adequately fund grounds such as (the QEO).” He said an additional $2 million had been slotted into the 2015-16 budget for the grants, highlighting the importance of sport in rural areas. “That’s why we’ve allocated some $100m towards community sport, that’s the

largest ever investment going over the next four years incorporated in our budget,” Mr Eren said. “Additionally we have also announced proudly that we have a dedicated fund for female change rooms.” Ms Edwards reflected Mr Eren’s statements about the significance of quality facilities for regional clubs. “By investing in regional Victoria’s sport and recreation infrastructure, we’re ensuring players and their families have a safe and secure spot to make friends, achieve goals and become the best they can be,” she said. With the upcoming AFL grand final, Mr Eren said the timing was pertinent in encouraging and supporting young football and netball talent. “When you think of all the AFL action coming our way in the coming weeks, that will inspire these youngsters to one day play on these iconic grounds,” he said. Holiday fun for creative kids IF you’ve got a bored young creative in your house these school holidays, tell them to get out there and make something. Bendigo’s school holiday workshop programs have themes ranging from magical worlds to natural worlds, and from the nautical to the theatrical. Next week’s offerings in the Bendigo, Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk libraries include free workshops to build your own kite, make a mini-lighthouse, or make felt fairies for a fairy-themed story-telling session. Children aged 4-10 are invited to dress up and join children’s theatre company Carp Productions for Knights, Dragons, Kings and Queens at the Bendigo Library, with a royal parade, a juggling jester and a rollick-

ing good tale. Older children who want to get theatrical can join Ranters Theatre for free drama workshops over four days at The Engine Room. The workshops are aimed at young people from Grade 6 to Year 9, and places are limited. Phone Rohan Phillips at The Capital on 5434 6478 for more information. The Bendigo Art Gallery’s holiday programs are always brilliant – this spring younger children can make a boat-themed collage and origami sailor’s hat, or create a blossom branch peppered with paper birds. Older children will be sketching various figures in the gallery to inspire their own 3D figure, which they’ll make with wire and foil. The gallery’s workshops cost $7.75, or for older chil-

dren $10.75, with accompanying adults free. So if you want your children to get more out of the holidays, take them to a workshop. They are accessible and affordable, and most of them are free. Getting involved in these hands-on creative workshops might open up a world of inspiration. A call for calm I too am appalled at the disruption to the recent City of Greater Bendigo council meeting. Robust and challenging debate and dialogue is a characteristic of a healthy democratic society; however, intimidation and bullying has no place in a civilised society, and what occurred at the meeting has left me deeply concerned for our community. The issue of building Bendigo’s first mosque has been for many a moment of great joy and an opportunity to embrace others and show the warmth, compassion and tolerance on which we pride ourselves. For others, opposing the mosque has become interlinked with the serious problems plaguing the Middle East, especially the injustices perpetrated against Christians and other minorities. Those on both sides of this issue have become increasing welded to their views to the exclusion of the other, and I am concerned that our community is becoming further divided rather than growing together in peace and stability. As bishop, my concern is for every human being as we are created in the image and likeness of God and therefore have inherent dignity. No one should have their dignity or freedom compromised. The dignity of every person, independent of ethnicity, creed, gender, sexuality, age or ability, is the foundation of Catholic Social Teaching. With this view, I call for calm and for greater tolerance, and ask that those who engaged in the behaviour witnessed on Wednesday night not repeat it at future community gatherings. We are a democratic society; we have our opportunity for dissent and censure of our elected leaders through the ballot box, not through intimidation, threats or bullying. I urge respect for our processes, for our fellow citizens who contribute positively to our society and each other. Les Tomlinson, Bishop of Sandhurst

Who do councillors serve? We elect our councillors so they can have their say on our behalf. It should be about maintaining and improving our city and Greater Bendigo in general. Is this truly the case or are the council executives calling the shots and are they helping and advising or simply dictating? Most of our executive officers are just blow-ins who will blow-out

when another municipality offers them a better deal. Many of us saw what happened with the council’s push for the tram around the lake. It took 20,000+ signatures and the local government minister to intervene to stop that and still council wanted it to go ahead. The mosque is another one of those controversial issues that will affect the shape of Bendigo forever and needs and deserves a far better consultation approach. Council are happy to send out a costly Bendigo supplement and I would say have no idea of how many get read or go straight from the mailbox to the bin. Would it be so hard to send out to residents a postage paid return envelope to go back to our council and attach a simple questionnaire: “Do you agree with the mosque? Yes or no.” I am sure the community have very little faith in our council as a whole given the waste and mismanagement we have seen from this and some previous councils. The cost to send this out would be negligible and would offer a clear decision people could live with and accept. Stuart Symes, Epsom

Who is the real threat to Bendigo culture? How sad and ironic that the wonderful Heritage Uncorked festival has to be cancelled because of the narrowminded and irresponsible behaviour of a very small fraction of Bendigo people, backed up by a larger number of imports, who claim to be defending Bendigo. How dare these people say they fear for our local culture at the hands of the Muslims who have been living peaceably among us for years? When did the Muslims of Bendigo ever cause such disruption or unpleasantness? It is the anti-Mosque protesters who are undermining Bendigo’s culture and our reputation as a tourist destination with first class local wine and food and a warm welcome for visitors. The immediate consequences for local business will be serious. The expected half million dollars or more will now not flow into our local economy next month. What may prove even more damaging is the long-term effect on the Bendigo brand and the profile of the excellent local wineries which rely on this annual event for much of their exposure. It does not seem that these protesters have given sufficient thought

to what they are actually trying to achieve or to the possible consequences of their actions. Rosemary Glaisher, Golden Square

Driven by slogans Ken Price is in some way part right when he claims in the Bendigo Weekly, September 4 that the ordinary citizen can only take so much “ideology and arrogance” from our political parties. Arrogance such as deriding one person for misusing politicians’ entitlements only to be found out that you were quite happy for charter flights, overseas first class travel and over-the-top office expenses to be paid for by the taxpayer. Ideology, like using race and an ideological argument to stop the implementation of the China/Australia free trade agreement, an agreement that promises thousands of Australians, many in this electorate, from enjoying the prosperity along with employment this agreement could bring. This campaign led locally by Lisa Chesters and federally by the trade union’s puppet Bill Shorten is based on lies and misinformation and could have devastating results for all of us. Lisa knows that no local pensioner will be faced by an unqualified, underpaid Chinese electrician coming to their door, no local electrician will lose their job and no houses will burn down as a consequence of this agreement.

So the question we should be asking her is why does she persist with these misleading facts in her argument? Of course the answer is easy; she has been told what to say by the unions who control her, and the Labor party, and because of political ideology. Likewise with the Labor party’s attack on Dyson Heydon head of a Royal Commission it is pure hypocrisy based ideological arrogance. No one in the Labor party or the unions has stated that the commissioner is biased, only that you and I and other ordinary people may perceive bias. Just like we could perceive bias in the appointments Bill Shorten made to the Fair Work Commission of union mates. So Ken, when you ask politicians who have no vision and are driven by insults, slogans arrogance and ideology don’t forget the Labor party, but in their rear view mirror they may well find fear based lies as well. You could also ask why is it that the only issue of late to bring bi-partisanship among our politicians is the issue relating to their entitlements, not the nation. D Arscott, Kangaroo Flat

Mindless groupthink Earlier this month two elderly friends of mine, as long-time residents of Bendigo, made their way, to the town hall to attend a City of

Greater Bendigo Council meeting, to hear the discussion on Amendment C217 for Big Hill and Mandurang. Upon arrival, they were accosted by several belligerent individuals who expected them to wear a four digit number. Deeply disquieted on realising this was against the Bendigo mosque, my friends, aged in their 80s, tried to explain: “How can you ask us to do this? We are Polish migrants.” Unsurprisingly, the subtle historic parallels from Nazi-occupied Europe were completely lost upon the antimosque protestors. It is highly doubtful that any of the Rights For Bendigo Residents members and their two supporters on council, councillors Chapman and Leach, have any personal connection with those they choose to hate, fear and misrepresent – namely, ordinary, law-abiding Bendigo Muslims. It is easy to hate a group, as was aptly demonstrated at our town hall last Wednesday week-ago. Hate is the natural emotion of hysteria and mindless groupthink. Twentieth century Spanish liberal philosopher, Jose Ortega Y Gassett made the profound observation that “hatred is a sentiment that leads to the extinction of values”. The escalating thuggishness and impunity of anti-Islam groups currently embarrassing and dividing Bendigo are an unedifying example of this universal truth. Michelle Goldsmith, Eaglehawk

P H O T O S

Violence never right PRIME minister Malcolm Turnbull has wasted no time in addressing some of the most challenging, and confronting issues we face, with this week’s launch of a multi-pronged package to address the unacceptable levels of domestic, family and sexual violence in the community. In the same week that Australian of the Year Rosie Batty visited Bendigo for her book launch, where she also spoke out about violence against women, the federal government unveiled a $100 million package which it hopes will provide an all-important safety net for those at high risk of being exposed to violence. The unacceptable, cold, hard fact that all Australians must face up to is that as of today, 63 women have died this year as a result of experiencing

violence from a current of former partner, and one in six women have experienced violence of this sort. Announcing details of this important first step yesterday, Mr Turnbull said the tragic and avoidable deaths of women and their children at the hands of current or former partners or family members highlighted the need for urgent action. One of the first things every single male needs to do is to accept responsibility for his own actions. Always. Stop, and think before you act. Always. It has never been acceptable to strike out at anyone, but especially at those we would purport to call our loved ones. The family home should be a sanctuary from the problems of the

world and there is no place for violence anywhere in anyone’s world. There are early hints, embedded in yesterday’s announcement and the subsequent response from the Victorian government, that the new prime minister may quickly achieve a closer working relationship with the state government. If this can be achieved, our state will be better for it. Good governments work together for the good of the people, and effective working relationships at the highest level will go a long way towards restoring confidence in our economy. They will also help address issues such as domestic violence, that require a coordinated national response, as well as that of every individual.

opinion Recalling Bendigo’s Mohammedan Tribute Bendigo lawyer

I’m an enthusiast when it comes to Australian history. Like many I’ve come to it through exploring my family tree – some convict ancestry, a Chinese trader, a policeman in the Queensland Native Police. Constable Francis Noble was first stationed at Cloncurry, Queensland in 1884, sited on rich copper fields at the frontier ofthe state’s pastoral industry. Cloncurry, named by Robert O’Hara Burke on that fateful expedition, became Australia’s biggest Ghan Town. The Muslim Afghan cameleers were critical to the growth and survival of Cloncurry, carrying in supplies and carrying out produce; like the copper ore shipped back to England for smelting. The story of the Muslim cameleers in Australia intrigues me. How did they practice their faith in Australia? What was their legacy? Was Bendigo touched by them or others who shared their beliefs? One legacy is the Marree

Mosque built at the junction of the Oodnadatta and Birdsville tracks in 1882. Another important footnote is the presence of Muslim cameleers on the Burke and Wills expedition that passed to the east of Bendigo in 1860. Muslims could later be found in Bendigo through the late 1800s and early 1900s, many as licensed “hawkers”.

Perhaps the most touching historical reference to Muslims in Bendigo can be found in The Argus from January 24, 1901 – following the death of Queen Victoria: A Mohammedan Tribute The muffled tone of the firebell shortly after 10 o’clock was the first intimation which reached the citizens of Bendigo that the illustrious Sovereign’s reign had terminated. Throughout the city the Queen’s death was the only topic of conversation, and the spontaneity with which the

pended their service and their High Priest said, “The dear good Queen, whom we all love, is dead. Kings and queens pass away every day, but never before did a Sovereign die who was so widely beloved. We will all sorrow for her.” What does The Argus report tell us? First there was a Muslim (or Mohammedan) community here in Bendigo in 1901, if not earlier. Second, they were able and felt able to celebrate a significant holy-day in the centre of Bendigo at the iconic Rosalind Park, in full

public view. They obviously did not feel scared about expressing their faith. Third they were sensitive to the attitudes and behaviors of the predominantly Anglo community. Fourth the respect that they showed was not just considered as noteworthy by the paper, it was emblematic of the response from the whole Bendigo community. This year I was invited to attend Eid Al-Fitr in Bendigo – the feast that marks the end of Ramadan. It was held at a local footy club, being one of the few spaces large enough to hold the Muslim community in Bendigo on such occasions. Chatting to local Muslims about their work, families and hobbies I might as well have been at any barbecue. But, amid the happy feasting I was left wondering why the community couldn’t meet in its own space. It’s since made me wonder what it would take for Bendigo’s Muslim community to feel welcome to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr publicly in the heart of our city again.

Normie and the choir

By DIANNE DEMPSEY

THE key moment at last week’s Forever Young concert came when the young Girton musicians were asked to come down from their rostrum and face the choir of some 80 elderly singers. The choir’s song to them was their signature tune, Forever Young, the beautiful Bob Dylan song that he wrote for his children. May your heart always be joyful And may your song always be sung May you stay forever young May you stay forever young Needless to say, at that point there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, in this case, the Ulumbarra Theatre. This was the choir’s gift to the young people, no matter how old you are, you can still carry life’s joys with you. The evening had started with the Forever Young choir belting out Eagle Rock led by Peter Petersen who put his hips into the music and set everyone back on their heels. To join this special choir you have to be over 65 and the choir’s premise is that no matter how old you are the great musical repertoire of modern rock music is still available to you – with all its joy and exuberance. The choir’s founder and director Laura Dusseljee chose the playlist well. Songs included the exhilarating rhythms of Solid Rock, Friday On My Mind and Can’t Get You Out Of My Head and the more

melodic riffs of Don’t Dream It’s Over and To Love Somebody. The majority of the songs were originally written and performed by Australian groups and the evening’s compere, former ABC broadcaster Derek Guille, seamlessly provided the audience with a short history of Australian rock. The special guest for the night was Normie Rowe who called up the inner 16-year-old in the audience. When Normie sang Shakin’ All Over,, few could resist. No knickers were flung but at least three women of a certain age were heard to scream “Normie! We still love you!“ Another highlight was the guitar duo between Normie Rowe and Year 11 student Reuben Roessler. As with the other Girton musicians, Reuben’s precocity was a credit to the Girton teachers. Even the Girton headmaster Matthew Maruff, the choir’s staunch supporter, couldn’t resist the action, special-guesting on drums. The real star of the evening however was Laura Dusseljee. Laura’s commitment and vision simply shone. Laura, you pulled it off.

WAS in Melbourne on Monday with a couple of hours to spare. The long-suffering Mrs Kendall was being pulled about by doctors and I went along for the ride. From what I hear, Mrs K suffered at their hands more than she ever does listening to me. But I shall keep her comments to myself. At one point it seemed clear there was time to be killed so I planned a 10-kilometre walk to see the sights of Parkville. It’s the first time I’d been let loose in the big city without a shop to be visited, so off I walked. Just as I set off Mrs K remembered an errand I could run while I was out, so at least I had a task to complete. I set the destination for my errand on my phone, and let the mapping GPS take me away. I went through some backstreets and crossed the freeway and then hit the base of a big hill. It seems I had crossed into a new zone. Outside each home was a pile of rubbish. Not household rubbish, but furniture and bedding. This was all new to me, and the good bit about being on foot was I could have a good look at all the discarded bits. There was plenty of junk let me tell you, but now and again I came across some useful stuff. Alongside the old mattresses and

system where people put out their lumpy waste so we could all have a stickybeak. It’s the ultimate recycling really, because most of the stuff would be spirited away before council had to collect it. I am sure there is a reason it does not happen, but I can’t think of one. It’s like a co-operative where we all share our items we no longer need, and what’s left goes into landfill. After my enlightening walk I staggered back to Mrs K and told her of my recycling plan. I could see she liked the idea of leaving me on the kerbside, but luckily she was not feeling well and needed someone to drive her home. Phew.

HIS charming children’s picture book follows little Henry’s search for his beloved stuffed rabbit, Raspberry. When a family search fails to locate Raspberry, Grandpa suggests Henry use his imagination to pretend his friend is with him. The book uses uncomplicated language that will appeal to its young readers. Its theme is the power of imagination, the untouched world so familiar to children. Clever imagery encourages the reader to use their imagination as in one instance during Henry’s search, pegs lurking in waves of sheets become

crocodiles. The appealing illustrations, so integral to children’s books, use simple sketches overlaid with photographs. Henry quickly falls asleep that evening as though his friend is with him and Raspberry is returned during the night. The story delivers a subtle message to the young reader that the people we love never really leave us. Even better it is a great story with which to send the little ones asleep. - Jude Bishop

EING awake in the early hours of the morning, for most, is a struggle. So why then would anyone work exclusively between the hours of 12am and 4am? According to Sam Bentley, lead singer of Melbourne band The Paper Kites, “because it seemed like a good idea at the time”. Bentley spent three months working the graveyard shift in order to write the band’s second album, aptly named twelvefour, and is about to embark on a national tour with the band that will come to Castlemaine next month. The album was based around and named after the theory that an artist’s creative peak is between the hours of 12am and 4am. “The whole thing started with a conversation with a friend and he mentioned seeing some screenwriters talking about the theory,” Bentley said.

what people connect with,” he said. “I want people to connect with the song but with Bendigo as well.” In a nod to the band’s pride in Bendigo, the album cover features an image by Allan Doney, a former well known Bendigo identity and passionate photographer. Doney catalogued his community and surrounds in post-war images. A launch for the album will be held October 24 at the Queens Arms Hotel, 25 Russell Street, Bendigo. Tickets are available now through www.oztix.com.au Twenty Seven, the first single from the band’s album, is out now on Verse Chorus Verse. www.versechorusverse.com.au - Jude Bishop

Entrepreneurial serenader

Actor’s mission of faith

A

MONG the group that made up the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders was an entrepreneur who had very many irons in the fire simultaneously, his name was FA Gromann. I had written a little about Francis Adam Gromann in my book, Mine, Women and Throng, as to how he impinged on the story of the Central Nell Gwynne Mine. Mr Gromann was a real goldfields entrepreneur especially when it came to his mining interests spurred on by the company boom of the early 1870s. Mr Gromann was chairman or a director of the following: South Extended Burra Tribute Company, The Humboldt Tribute Company, Railway Tribute Company, Extended Hercules Tribute Company, Sondrio Company, Golden Drop Company, Royal Albert United Company, G G Consols Company, South Nankin Company, North Gladstone Tribute Company, New Chum and Bellevue Railway Reserve Company and the South Queen Victoria Company to name just some. As an individual Mr Gromann also took out leases in his own name, in most cases he was hoping to have companies formed on the ground that had been pegged out.

These leases were granted and appeared in the Government Gazette however if there was no interest in these claims then eventually the lease was declared void. The Court of Mines where mining disputes were heard and settled was not an unfamiliar venue where Mr Gromann appeared from time to time. Other legal jurisdictions were also not unknown territory where he had to come forward either as a plaintiff or in defence. The County Court and also the Police Court had him in for a variety of reasons, in one instance he was prosecuted for having his chimney catch fire. An accumulation of soot in chimneys could ignite and the subsequent burning in the chimney was like an upside down rocket. The glowing sparks could easily spread to neighbouring properties, many constructed of weatherboards, the result could be rather disastrous. A fire occurred in one of the chimneys of the View Point Hotel, Charing Cross in 1867, Mr Gromann was the proprietor at the time. He also owned the Royal Hotel at Myers Creek. From the View Point Hotel Mr Gromann took up the Post Office Hotel which was

about 200 metres away on the western side of View Street. This hotel was directly opposite the purpose-built post office, which is now the Sandhurst Trustees Building. The Post Office Hotel was later supplanted by a more substantial building and it was then renamed the Athenaeum Hotel, this building is still standing. Both of the aforementioned hotels had a variety of meeting rooms apart from the accommodation that was required to be provided. These meeting rooms were referred to as “Gromann’s Chambers” and numerous mining companies held their meetings at this locality. The Australian Natives Association (ANA) also held its meetings at Gromann’s Chambers prior to constructing their own venue further up the hill on the opposite side of the street. The RAO Buffaloes, Prairie Lodge also met at his venue. In 1884 when a presentation was being made to prominent Eaglehawk citizen and legal mine manager Hay Kirkwood, many luminaries attended this function including Mr Gromann, who sang a song at this rather special event for Mr Kirkwood, which was much

ANDS up those who’ve never watched so much as a single episode of The Love Boat. The Mary Tyler Moore Show? No-one? Aside from being two of the most crisply written, longest-running and most commercially successful US TV comedies of the late 20th century, these international hit series have one more thing in common: now-84-year-old actor Gavin MacLeod. Raised in small-town America, MacLeod – or Allan See, as he was known then – was from an early age a natural performer. However, his childhood was far from privileged and his transition to working professionally was a challenging and at times conflicted process. Beginning with bit-parts alongside iconic film stars such as Gregory Peck and Cary Grant, MacLeod slowly and steadily earned increasingly lucrative roles. For the diligent, ambitious up-and-comer, these achievements had their drawbacks, though – namely, the frustration of playing unsatisfying peripheral characters. With that boredom came drinking, and with drinking –

GIFTED SINGER: FA Gromann appreciated by the dignitaries present. Not only did he use his voice effectively but Mr Gromann was a good actor, he appeared together at the Royal Princess Theatre with J Roach as Wilhelmina and Mr Gromann was the equally clever Dutch boy Hans, this sketch by the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders was very well received by the public. Some of the music was composed or arranged for them by J Butler. In 1887 Mr Gromann left Bendigo for Melbourne and it did not take him long to go back and become a Boniface once more, this time at the Railway Hotel in Box Hill where he passed away in December 1897, leaving a substantial estate to his wife Mary W Gromann.

as MacLeod admits – followed the dissolution of his oncestable homelife and a need to rethink his choices. This autobiography – just released in paperback – is simultaneously open and honest and heavily optimistic, presenting a glass-half-full account of MacLeod’s relationships on- and off-screen as he regrouped to become pivotal in the ensembles of Mary Tyler Moore (as writer Murray Slaughter) and then Love Boat (as father figure Captain Merrill Stubing). His generally positive, will-do attitude to life is evident throughout as he details his experience as a divorced Catholic who rediscovers Christianity and becomes passionately “born again”. (Warning: the final third of the book is particularly rich with religious references – something that may not always sit comfortably with Australian readers unaccustomed to middle America’s proclamations of faith.) MacLeod writes with insight on not only himself but also Hollywood peers including Robert Redford, Bette Davis, Aaron Spelling and Marilyn Monroe. - Rosalea Ryan

OLA Makar of Innersense Healing Massage Therapy relocated her practise to the Mandurang Valley, only a short drive from Bendigo at the start of 2014. A converted brick bungalow is now a unique and charming rustic massage studio set among native wildlife and gumtrees. Lola’s understanding of the ‘whole’ experience of massage is what drove her to provide such a setting for her clients. Lola provides a combination of sports and remedial deep tissue therapy, fascial release, traditional Swedish relaxation and Hawaiian Lomi Lomi. “It isn’t just the benefits of the therapy itself, it’s the environment that you create for your clientele that also impacts the result of the treatment” Lola said, who is committed to understanding and

appreciating the powerful benefits of massage therapy on the mind and body as a whole. When the mind is clear and at peace the body is more receptive to healing, Lola says, and by providing an environment that is quiet, serene, and safe is part of that healing process. “People access massage therapy for many different reasons, being in tune and aware of my client’s needs is paramount to the treatment itself,” Lola said. “When you’ve taken the time to consider the environment and the space in which you work, positive energy flows through both the therapist and client enabling healing to take place naturally.” Call Lola of Innersense Healing Massage on 0419 317 220 to make time to experience this unique environment and Lola’s beneficial massage therapy today. BFNL GRAND FINAL

All eyes on the prize AS remarkable as it would be, an undefeated season is the furthest thing from Lia Marrone’s mind. With her side not having lost a game this year, the Golden Square A-grade netball coach said this week her side’s focus is fixed on the main reward on Saturday – a 2015 premiership medallion. The Bulldogs take on Strathfieldsaye Storm in the 2015 Agrade netball decider from 3pm. Square has an unmatched mix of youth and experience in its lineup, with teenagers Ash and Abbey Ryan flanked by longtime Bulldogs Kath Basilewsky and Belinda Pinner, defenders Allira Hammond and Meg Gilbert as well as Steph Freemantle. The team’s trump card is goal shooter Gabe Richards, but

Marrone says her team can not simply be shut down by locking down on the Bendigo Spirit star. “There is no doubt that Gabe is an asset in many ways but we are strong all over the court and pull it together well as a team,” she said. “Allira and Meg have an uncanny connection which makes them unbeatable in defence and Ash is dynamic in the centre court. “Abbey can shoot from anywhere and Belinda, Kath and Steph are very smart players.” Marrone coached the Bulldogs to an A-grade grand final after coming from fourth last season, before losing to Kangaroo Flat in the decider. She said grand final newcomers Strathfieldsaye present a massive challenge, and expects the game to be a tough, defensive tussle. “We play a different style of

game than Strath so the challenge will be to play our own game, keep it clean and controlled, and not get caught up in their game,” Marrone said. “I think it will be a strong defensive game at both ends and there are some good match ups in the centre court so it will be a matter of converting turnovers into goals on the board.”

Marrone did bring in some extremely well-qualified help this week, just to ensure her side is at its best. “The girls have worked hard all year to get to this point and finals month has been no different,” she said. “We had the privilege of having Julie Corletto (Australian Diamonds player) come in

We are feeling well prepared and know what we need to do to get the job done

The side’s lead-up to the grand final has been massively different to that of last year, after playing four games in the four weeks of finals in 2014. This year the Bulldogs have played one game in finals and are rested, but the preparation in grand final week has been largely the same.

and do a motivational talk with the girls on Wednesday. “We are feeling well prepared and know what we need to do to get the job done. “We will step onto the court with our heads high for a great season so far and we have the fire in our belly for that grand final win.”

Storm rolls into grand final debut ANOTHER year, another first for the Strathfieldsaye Storm. Most of the club’s historymaking achievements in its short lifespan have come on the football field, but in 2015 the club’s netball program took a quantum leap forward. The club’s A-grade side will compete in its first grand final on Saturday and the Storm will also have its B-grade and B-reserve sides in grand final action. As the netball catches up to the remarkable success the Storm has had on the football field the past two years, Storm A-grade coach Maleta Roberts said there is a great atmosphere among the club’s netball ranks. “All the grades have worked really hard this year,” she said. “Last year we said it was an introduction kind of year – with so many new coaches on board – setting standards and expectations among the group but this year was always going to be ‘business’. “I think it demonstrates the depth of players we have across the grades which is always healthy for a club.” The Storm’s strength comes in its defence and mid-

court, with the likes of defenders Fiona Themann and Kate Burton and Brianna Dalrymple-Monro having a huge impact in the team’s strong second half of the season. “Our strengths are speed, quick hands and feet throughout the court, one on one defence and the numbers and versatility of players to play various positions,” Roberts said. “(Golden Square) are a well-respected and wellmeshed team. “I think we have definitely strengthened our weaker areas to combat that. “We have decreased our losing margin each time we have played them... so obviously something is working.” Despite the relative inexperience in finals of her side compared to that of Square, Roberts is confident her side can topple the 2015 competition powerhouse, and said that defence will be key. “A defensive game generally wins games so we will need to have 7 attackers and 7 defenders every minute of every quarter,” she said. “It is an awesome achievement to get this far. Anything extra is just a bonus.”

ALONG with senior football and A-grade netball some top-quality grand final action will be on offer at the Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday in the early Bendigo Football Netball League grand finals. The day’s grand finals get under way at 9am when Golden Square takes on Strathfieldsaye in the under-18 football. Strath belted the Dogs two weeks ago in the semi final, with Square sneaking through with a thrilling finish last week when Brayden Stepien goaled with three seconds left to hand them a one-point win. In the reserves football from 11.40am top side Golden Square takes on a red-hot Eaglehawk. The Borough has cruised through from an elimination final and savaged Sandhurst to the tune of 106 points in last week’s preliminary final. The Dogs have had the week off and go in rested, and bolstered by the return of a number of players from last week’s losing senior side. Action on the netball courts gets under way from 9am with the 17-and-under grand final between red-hot favourites Kangaroo Flat and Sandhurst. From 10.30am Strathfieldsaye tackles Golden Square in B-reserve, with the sides also meeting in the B-grade decider from 12pm. Golden Square also features in the Areserve grand final against Sandhurst before the A-grade game between Strathfieldsaye and Golden Square.

Dragons plan for revenge By JOEL PETERSON

Coach: Darryl Wilson (Storm)

Balance the key for Storm From Page 40 “The big thing for us is just making sure it goes up our end and we can get enough ball from the middle and move it well.” Balance at selection will be key for Wilson, finding the right balance between the inside and outside aspects of the game in the middle of the ground. With grand finals being more contested affairs that usual, Wilson expects finding that happy medium to be critical, but has been pleased with how his side is travelling despite playing only one game in a month. “They’ve been good, our run, spread and ball movement has been really good and we are hoping that continues at the weekend,” he said. “I think the grand final is a different game and it tends to be

HARD BALL: Strathfieldsaye’s Lachlan Sharp kicks clear. a bit more contested. “So we need to make sure we get the right balance between inside and out at selection.” After losing the 2013 grand final and winning last year, Strathfieldsaye has no shortage of finals experience, which Wilson expects to be critical come the bounce at 2.20pm on Saturday.

“There’s no doubt that the experience of losing one and winning one is valuable the heartbreak and the celebrating, we know what both ends of the scale are,” he said. “We are satisfied we know what it is all about, now it is a matter of executing on Saturday, getting it all together and making sure it works for us.”

A MORE relaxed approach at Sandhurst has the Dragons ready to go ahead of the club’s second straight grand final appearance against Strathfieldsaye. After a huge build up before last year’s grand final loss to the Storm, Sandhurst has been galvanised after a tough past month and heads into Saturday’s senior grand final relaxed and playing sparkling football. The Dragons belted an understrength Golden Square by 77 points in last weekend’s preliminary final, and the mood in the Sandhurst camp is one of quiet confidence. “The approach has been probably a lot more mellow this year they hype was fantastic seeing as the club hadn’t been there in ten years,” Fitzpatrick said. “The opportunity to get there again where a few weeks ago it looked it may not have happened has been received fairly comfortably by the group.” Instead of fighting for key players to be fit on the biggest stage as was the case last year, Fitzpatrick goes into the game with a completely different selection quandary, not dissimilar to that of his opposition coach in Darryl Wilson. Simply put, Sandhurst has too many good players. Adam Parry missed last week’s thumping win over Square through suspension and is a walk-up start while, if fit, key position player Ben Anderson is in the same bracket.

However, Ned Slater has impressed since making his debut against Eaglehawk two weeks ago, young guns Galen Munari, Seb Greene, Braidon Blake and Lachlan Tardrew have been important and Alex Wharton and Jake McLean have been superb since mid-season stints in the reserves. “Midway through the year there were a couple of guys like Wharton and McLean who went back to play reserves for a few games and since they have been back their footy has only improved,” Fitzpatrick said. “With Adam coming back it will be difficult because no one deserves to miss out.” Sandhurst’s turnaround since it copped an 84-point thrashing at the hands of Golden Square in round 17 has been remarkable. After appearing flat, unmotivated and nothing like unified, the team had somewhat of a heart-toheart following the demoralising loss and have played a completely different brand of football since. A midfield led by Tim Martin, Nick Stagg, Lee Coghlan, Parry, and skipper Blair Holmes will have to get on top if the Dragons are to taste premiership success for the first time since 2004, but Fitzpatrick believes his side has every chance of turning around last year’s grand final loss. “There is nothing but belief that we can achieve the desired outcome of having a win,” he said. “The guys certainly aren’t going to be in awe of anything that’s ahead of them.”

Strathdale’s Lonain Burnett scored a brace in his side’s 2-1 win over Spring Gully, while Shane Eleveld made the breakthrough for Eaglehawk in a 1-0 win over Colts United at Truscott Reserve last Sunday. The division one final will be played from 3pm on Sunday, as part of a bumper weekend for the BASL. Eaglehawk is strongly represented on Sunday, taking on Spring Gully in the division two men’s final from 1pm, while the Hawks tackle Epsom in the women’s cup decider from 11am and Strathdale takes on Spring Gully in the youth league cup from 9am. Junior finals will be held on Saturday, getting under way from 9am at Epsom Huntly Reserve.

KELSEY Griffin has thought of Bendigo as home almost ever since she played her first season with the Bendigo Spirit. After another stellar WNBL season that saw her crowned the league’s defensive player of the year, Griffin was voted the Bendigo Weekly/Prime 7-backed Sports Star of the Year award joint winner for March. She shared the honour with Kangaroo Flat’s Blake Pryse, who took out the Australian under-20 decathlon title in Queensland at the national championships, while cyclist Sam Crome took out the Cyril Michelsen trust award after finishing third in the Tour de Perth. Unfortunately for Griffin a hip injury and microfracture surgery derailed her season in the US, but it allowed her to concentrate on life off the court, including officially making Bendigo her home. Although a long way from her native Alaska, Griffin knew she wanted to live in Bendigo almost as soon as she arrived in town. Now she owns a house in Bendigo and has turned in every bit of paper thrown at her as she aims for Australian citizenship.

HOME IN BENDIGO: Kelsey Griffin. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN “I’ve submitted every piece of paperwork that the government has thrown at me and I’m just waiting to hear back for the decision so we will wait and see,” she said. “It goes back to my first season here, four days in I told my mum ‘I want to move here’ and was more joking that serious. “As I got to know the people and the town and this area it has felt more like home than any place I’ve ever been and I would love for my family to be closer but I love Australia, it has

been great to me and I just feel right at home here.” Griffin has been greeted with a completely different set up for the Spirit this year, with new coach Simon Pritchard and a host of new players. She paid tribute to former coach Bernie Harrower and her championship winning teammates, but said she is excited to work with Pritchard and youngsters such as Molly Matthews, Sarah McAppion and Ashleigh Spencer. “It is different, a new system

both defensively and offensively, (teammate Gabe Richards) and I were having a joke the other night that we had to relearn the system,” she said. “It is a lot of learning early on for us ‘older’ players but I think that is good for us and I’m excited about where the club is headed. “I’m really grateful for what the team has done for me in the past but I’m grateful that I still have the opportunity to play here because I really did not want to leave Bendigo.”

In a rematch of the 2014 Bendigo Football Netball League decider, Sandhurst is bracing for a...

Storm front

By JOEL PETERSON

DESPITE an undefeated season, Strathfieldsaye Storm coach Darryl Wilson has had more than his share of headaches at the selection table in 2015. The Storm have used 45 players this season due to injury and unavailability but have managed to record 19 wins from 19 games, extending the team’s winning streak to 36 games on end. Wilson has done a masterful job of reshuffling the magnets on his whiteboard week to week, but this week’s Bendigo Football Netball league grand final against Sandhurst looms as his toughest assignment. The Storm take on the Dragons at the Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday for the second consecutive year, following a 55-point

triumph in 2014. The two matches between the sides have been the Storm’s closest this season, decided by a total of 18 points. Storm forwards Lachlan Sharp and Matt Ferguson will be available for selection following injuries, but finding space for them in the side that comfortably defeated Golden Square to advance to the decider is another task in itself. “That’s the tragic part of grand finals is that the selection group has to make the decision not to pick someone, it’s the worst thing about it,” Wilson said. “We can’t fit 30 into 22 because obviously that doesn’t work but you never want to see someone deserving miss out.” The Storm’s under-18 side is also in the grand final,

and had a hit-out against the senior side last week to ensure both sides stayed sharp heading into grand final clashes this weekend. Ferguson and Sharp will be added to a Storm forward line already loaded with Sam Mildren, Tom Bartholomew and Stephen Milne, the quintet featuring together for the first time all season. “That front group, this will be their first game together,” Wilson said. “We just have not been able to get that mix together in one game for the whole year, and Saturday will give us the opportunity to see how it clicks.
