Bendigo Weekly – Friday, October 23, 2015

The Weekly look at the local real estate market

Prime spot THE Professionals will auction a ripe for renovation property at 6 Dooley Street in the increasingly popular North Bendigo from noon on Saturday. The large approximately 1381 square metre allotment would suit a townhouse development (STCA), and there is the bonus of a three bedroom home and shedding on the block as well. Buyers have the chance to follow their dreams of an idyllic rural lifestyle when a magnificent nine acre property at 110 O’Halloran Drive, Mandurang South goes under the hammer tomorrow on site from 3.30pm. Featuring a huge 48 squares of living, the five-bedroom home also offers open plan living and dining options, a huge rumpus room, separate selfcontained one bedroom guesthouse, a pool, ample shedding and great views. Surrounded by state forest on three sides, the property is just 15 minutes from the heart of Bendigo. Elders also has a neat standalone two bedroom brick townhouse at 1/12 Naranghi Drive Strathdale to auction from 1.30pm Saturday. Location is one of this property’s many valued assets, being close to Kennington Reservoir and parklands, Kennington Village, Strath Village, La Trobe University and Strath Hill shopping centre.

A corner block measuring 628 square metres at 11 Westwood Drive, California Gully will be auctioned from 11.30am Saturday, also by Elders. Just a short drive from central Bendigo, the property is in a wellestablished estate and offers the potential for further subdivision (STCA). A neat as a pin California Bungalow at 331 Eaglehawk Road, California Gully will go under the hammer from 10am Saturday to kick start a busy day for Elders. The latest data from REIV shows solid capital growth has been recorded across regional Victoria in the year to September 30. Regional Victoria’s median house price increased 5.5 per cent over last year’s figures to $347,000 while unit prices were up four per cent to a median of $260,000. While house prices increased across the state, there is substantial variation in capital growth between regions and even between towns within those regions. Towns in Victoria’s northwest recorded some of the largest increases in the year to September 30 with Horsham enjoying the state’s highest capital gain. The annual median house price there rose more than 20 per cent over the year to $226,000, up

DREAMS: 110 O’Halloran Road. from $180,000. This was followed by Daylesford, also in the state’s northwest, where house prices also grew by more than 20 per cent over the same period last year to a median of $440,000, up from $354,500. It was good news for home owners in Warrnambool, where the median house price of $357,500 was up from $300,000 – annual growth of 19.2 per cent. Other coastal areas performing well include Anglesea, up 13.6 per cent to $625,000, and Barwon Heads, up 12.6 per cent to $777,000. Closer to home, the median price in Junortoun rose 7.4 per cent to $510,000, while in Huntly it soared 13.5 per cent to $369,000. North Bendigo’s median rose five per cent for the year to $277,000, Strathfieldsaye’s by 0.6 per cent to $422,500 while Maiden Gully $441,250, Spring Gully $380,000 and Golden Square $313,750 were unchanged.

Strong median house price gains were seen in towns within commuting distance of Melbourne. The Ballarat suburb of Canadian saw the largest annual growth of commuter towns, up 15.4 per cent to a median of $347,500 while house prices in Ballarat North increased 13.1 per cent to $329,750. Significant price growth was also recorded in Ballarat and Ballarat East in the 12 months to September 30, up 11 and 8.3 per cent respectively. This increased the median house price in those areas to $347,000 and $280,000. The Macedon ranges also appealed to buyers with median house price increases seen in both New Gisborne and Gisborne. New Gisborne’s median house price rose 14.4 per cent to $577,500 while Gisborne saw capital growth of 13.2 per cent over the year to $587,500. Craig Webster Bendigo Division chairman, REIV

NBN delays slammed

By LAURA HURLEY

MORE than 55,000 homes and businesses around Bendigo will receive the National Broadband Network in the next three years, however, advocacy groups don’t think it is fast enough. Towns and suburbs where construction on fixed-line broadband access won’t begin until 2017 include Ascot, Epsom, Huntly, White Hills, Eaglehawk, Maiden Gully, Marong, Heathcote and Elmore. iLoddon Mallee project consultant Margaret O’Rourke said the group was pleased to see a number of places around the Bendigo region

communities surrounding Bendigo had access to faster broadband. “Broadband for communities today is almost an essential service in terms of activities people need to do, whether it’s local or national or global,” she said. “And so the longer the delays are for communities the harder that then makes it. “It puts us at risk – any community that doesn’t have a good level of broadband finds it hard to compete.” Ms O’Rourke said following the announcement of the three year rollout list, iLoddon Mallee was hopeful it could be delivered ahead of time.

Fyffe times his mayoral return At precisely 7.28pm, on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, in one of the most celebrated movie scenes of all time, the legendary movie characters Marty McFly and Doc Brown from the cultural phenomenon that is the Back to the Future franchise, arrive in the future. This week, on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at precisely 7:28pm, City of Greater Bendigo councillors were locked in a meeting to determine who would serve as this city’s mayor for the next 12 months. Councillors went back to the future in their own way, and elected Cr Rod Fyffe, the veteran Doc Brown lookalike, to the role. The 2015/2016 mayoral role will be Cr Fyffe’s fourth ascension to the top job. The retired school teacher has served as mayor in each of the past three four year terms of council, namely in 2003/2004, 2004/2005 and in 2010/11. Cr Fyffe was a recipient of the Order of Australia Medal for his service to local government in 2013, and he has served as a local councillor since 1983 (excluding the term of the Commissioners post amalgamation). “It is a privilege to be elected to this role for a fourth time by my fellow councillors. I look forward to council working together to deliver great outcomes for our community over the

“Because we’ve always been advocating to our communities, and we’ll continue to do that, we’re hopeful that as the rollout start to gather pace that hopefully some of these locations might get brought forward,” she said. “A big project such as this, there’s always a risk of delays… hopefully things are improving. We’re hoping it might come ahead of time.” She said the group would continue to advocate for NBN in the Loddon Mallee area. Residents can check out the progress of the rollout in their area at www.nbnco.com.au/rolloutplan

next 12 months,” he said. “Working with our wonderful local residents to help make Greater Bendigo an even better place to live has to be one of the most rewarding things you can do.” Last night, Cr Fyffe received a special award in recognition of his 30 years of service as a councillor in Bendigo, when he received the a Councillor Service Award as part of the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) annual conference in Melbourne. Cr Fyffe said his work as a councillor was a way for him to give back to the community. “I am accepting the award in recognition of a team effort as you cannot do these things on your own,’’ he said. “The community, volunteers, my fellow councillors and officers have supported me along the way and deserve to share in this recognition. “My wife Victoria and family have allowed and encouraged me to do what I want to do and I am very thankful for that.” Cr Fyffe has also confirmed he intends to nominate for the 2016 council elections, to be held on October 22, 2016, in what many pundits are predicting to be one of the most anticipated and crucial local government elections in Bendigo’s recent history.

THE Bendigo Zonta Club is opening four gardens in Bendigo on Sunday, October 25. Bendigo residents are invited to the opening of the four gardens and are encouraged to support The Zonta Club’s upcoming fundraising. Bendigo Zonta Club president Kathryn Patarica explained that while still maintaining their focus on reducing the amount of domestic violence incidents and supporting victims the club is now looking at Annie North as their main project. “As well as purchasing new bedding, Zonta Bendigo has decided to provide an electronic media unit to enable women victims of domestic violence to access court remotely from the new refuge about to be built,” Ms Patarica said. Zonta International is a leading global organisation of professionals empowering women worldwide and working to eliminate violence against women and children. The majority of the funds raised from the event will be donated to Annie North, as well as Dragon Abreast and Zonta National and International projects. The four gardens are located at 24 Degille Street, Bendigo and 30 Herbert Avenue, Strathdale and will open from 4pm on Sunday, October 25. – Mellad Ibrahimi flower power: Gaye Hanrahan and Annette Mouat.

El Niño strength grows

The Bureau of Meteorology believes it is better placed to manage a potential serious drought event, as El Niño continues to strengthen over south-eastern Australia. The 2015 El Niño is the strongest seen since 1997 according to the bureau, and the rapidly strengthening positive Indian Ocean Dipole is reinforcing that. The bureau was forced to re-is-

sue its latest climate outlook due to the conditions, with a much drier spring than was previously anticipated now being predicted. The strong El Niño is expected to last until at least the end of the year before declining in the first quarter of 2016, however the positive Indian Ocean Dipole is expected to decay earlier, in November. Bureau of Meteorology director and CEO Dr Rob Vertessy said the millennium drought had

helped the bureau be better prepared if any future events occur. “The millennium drought made us acutely aware of how tenuous our water security was,” he said.

verely diminished water supplies at the time.” Bendigo has recorded just 14.2 millimetres of rain this month, following on from four consecutive months of below average rainfall. The bureau’s latest drought statement shows a severe 15- and 36-month rainfall deficit for most of central Victoria, while parts of western Victoria have recorded the lowest rainfall on record during the period.

Smaller pools’ cost mounts ATTENDANCE at one of the City of Greater Bendigo’s swimming pools cost council more than $77 per person per visit last season. According to statistics presented to councillors at last week’s council meeting, the Raywood swimming pool received only 505 visitors during the 201415 season, down 311 visitors from the previous year. The Marong swimming pool cost council $37.62 per person per visit, and the Kangaroo Flat swimming pool costs council $30.99 per person with patronage declining by 2109 from 2013-14 to 2014-15. Council’s strongest performing pool in attendance was the Bendigo Aquatic Centre, increasing by 38,097 visitors from 2012-13 to 2013-14, and by 20,047 visitors the following season at a cost of $6.77 per visitor to council. Bendigo East was the cheapest facility per visit for council, costing $2.20 per person. The report was tabled as councillors discussed the future of aquatic centres around the municipality, including their possible rationalisation. Councillor Lisa Ruffell said previous

councils had discussed the possibility of closing down a number of smaller pools. “Thinking about closing Golden Square, closing Kangaroo Flat, closing Long Gully, and putting in the big aquatics centre. That was the plan back then,” she said. “(These figures) just really show me that all that time ago the previous council, we made some hard decisions about closing pools. “And I think from these figures we were on the right track, we were making the right decisions and things change. I understand that, and move on. Councillor Rod Campbell said it was again time to ask questions about the viability of running some of the pools. “(It’s about) recognising that there are issues with the ageing state of our aquatics facilities,” he said. “It’s very interesting to look at how many aquatic facilities we’ve got, why we might want to rationalise those, how important the aquatics strategy is, how important it is to look at the age of our equipment. “We need to be planning for the future – do we need as many? Where should they be?”

Game on at Canterbury Park EAGLEHAWK will celebrate the official opening of new state state-of-the-art sporting facilities in Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park Precinct this weekend. Saturday’s open day will showcase the revitalised precinct, with a host of activities planned from 10am to 1pm, including come-and-try clinics for AFL football, cricket, netball and lawn bowls. An official opening will take place at 12.15pm at the new netball/ tennis courts. The project was originally expected to be completed by March this year, but problems with the netball courts saw almost all of Eaglehawk’s netball games transferred indoor to the adjoining Peter Krenz Leisure Centre. Mayor Peter Cox said the event would also celebrate the completion of the central activity area with new netball/ tennis courts, a mixed-use pavilion, cricket nets and training area, synthetic bowling green,

effect to the local economy. “Many people would have driven past and seen the works under way, so I encourage people to make the time on Saturday to come and see for themselves this fantastic community asset.” More than 100 local tradesmen have worked on the project. The council has invested $4.25 million in the Canterbury Park project, while the state government contributed $1.45m, and the Eaglehawk community has also made significant donations. In the next two financial years, council will invest approximately $2m in the construction of a new social pavilion, which will be home to junior and senior AFL, cricket and netball clubs. Subject to funding, there are also plans to build a band stand to face the events oval and install a regional play space.

Cr Cox said the redevelopment delivers on recommendations in the 2011 Canterbury Park Precinct Master Plan and realises long-held aspirations for the site. “Saturday will be an exciting day for the Eaglehawk and wider Greater Bendigo community, as it will mark the culmination of 10 years of hard work by the City of Greater Bendigo and the members of various user groups who had a vision to transform Canterbury Park into a sporting hub with contemporary facilities,” Cr Cox said. “This is a space not only where people can come and enjoy a kick of the footy or throw a netball between friends, but is also capable of hosting major sporting and cultural events that can have a positive flow-on

Blokes lunch success looms

The new Bendigo Weekly Blokes Biggest Ever Lunch to be held at Ulumbarra Theatre on Friday, November 27 is almost sold out. Event spokesman Keith Sutherland said many sponsors were already on board to help back the event, which raises valuable funds for prostate cancer research. They include gold sponsors Bendigo Toyota, CBA Bank, St John of God Hospital, City of Greater Bendigo and BBX Australia. Silver sponsors include Telstra Business Centre, Villawood, Game Traffic & Contracting, MGR Accountants, Bendigo Health, Boltons and the Foundry Hotel complex, while the Bendigo Weekly and WIN Television are media sponsors. Mr Sutherland thanked all sponsors for their generous support of the cause.

This year’s guest speaker will be Doherty’s Gym founder and former Bendigo resident, Tony Doherty, while Paul Woolley will discuss his prostate journey. There will also be a major raffle with many prizes to help raise more funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. This year’s auction will include a variety of donated items, including a hall of fame dinner for two and sponsors lunch with the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger, luxury accommodation vouchers at Torquay, the Gold Coast and Fiji. Local restaurants have also donated vouchers, there’s mixed local wine, advertising vouchers from Bendigo Weekly, Bendigo Magazine, WIN Television and Gold FM; as well as vouchers from Boltons, a Samsung

Smart Signage platform from Cloud Copy Click, a rare AFL Footy Show package for six, four-day general admission tickets for the 2016 Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix, a signed Matthew Hayden cricket bat and much more. Mr Sutherland said he was also grateful for generous cash donations from the Bendigo Wine Growers Association’s World’s Longest Lunch and the Commonwealth Bank for the proceeds of a major fundraising auction. About 20,000 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and about 3300 men die from the disease each year. ‘’That’s why it’s so important to have regular prostate checks… hopefully after this year’s event we should have raised about

$400,000 from our Bendigo fundraisers which mostly goes towards finding a cure for prostate cancer,” Mr Sutherland said. Anyone wishing to make a donation or donate a major auction or raffle lot should contact Mr Sutherland on 0418 509 430, or Julie Batey at the Bendigo Weekly on 5440 2500.

High hopes for development THE City of Greater Bendigo wants to see the rejuvenation and redevelopment of High Street into a contemporary district with high density development, including commercial developments and apartments. Council has prepared a Planning Scheme Amendment which it says has the potential to kickstart tens of millions of dollars of investment in a range of commercial and housing options between Short and Shamrock streets. The amendment seeks to rezone land along the boulevard between the two streets from Commercial 2 to Commercial 1 to allow for higher density mixed use development. Planning and development director, Prue Mansfield, said High Street was widely acknowledged as the key entrance into Bendigo. “Council believes the High Street boulevard is the right place to feature a number of well-designed and thoughtfully considered contemporary, mid-

“The re-zoning would ensure any development remained sympathetic to the boulevard’s surrounds, including protecting views to the Central Deborah Gold Mine poppet head and the Sacred Heart Cathedral. It is also consistent

with all council objectives about growing our city for the future.” The amendment is on public exhibition until November 9. To find out how to make a submission visit www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/ planning

LEGENDARY AFL player and coach David Parkin will visit Bendigo on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday, November 3, as part of his 2000 kilometre charity ride across Victoria. He and 16 others will be riding postie bikes across Victoria for seven days to raise money and awareness and support for prostate cancer and sufferers. Parkin and 10 other former Carlton players will also be part of a sportsman’s night at Bendigo Stadium to help with raising more money for the charity ride. Former Carlton players such as a Greg Williams as well as club champions in Geoff Southby and Des English, and local

identity Stephen Oliver, will all be attendance on the sportsman’s night. Parkin, who had a brush with prostate cancer, says he is honoured to be the patron of the charity ride. “It is important that we continue to spread the word about prostate cancer in the hope that we can save more men from this insidious disease that kills over 3000 men annually,” Parkin said. “We have the bikes, we have the riders and lots of enthusiastic supporters. “But we also need your support with sponsorship.” For more information on the charity ride head to www. themalebagfoundation.org.au

More photos at www.newbendigophotos.com Boys and men of all ages will be working up a sweat at table tennis venues across Australia this month, including the Novo Centre in Bendigo. The fundraiser aims to free some of the world’s most vulnerable from sexual exploitation and human trafficking and challenge men to “man up” when it comes to domestic violence. Forty-four venues across Australia will host the 2015 Ping Pong-A-Thon. Participants commit to play

table tennis for a minimum of three hours and engage their family and friends to sponsor their efforts. For the first time the event will take place in Bendigo. Bendigo Baptist Church (Novo Centre) will host the event on October 27 and 28. Started in 2011 as an experiment to try to engage men on issues of trafficking and exploitation, 15 Melbourne men raised $10,000 to help children and teenagers in South East Asia.

Adrian Rowse, founder of The Pong said many Aussie men are isolated and lacking a place where they feel they can make a difference or just have fun. “Many guys, young and old, make new friends and experience a powerful sense of community by participating in the Ping PongA-Thon,” he said. Mr Rowse spent much of 2012-13 as the director of a small non-government organisation in Thailand, who provides support and services to young men (aged

eight to 24 years), who are living and being exploited in the red light districts of Chiang Mai. “I’ve seen first hand the huge challenges that so many young people in our world face simply as a result of being born in an environment of extreme poverty,” he said. Register to participate, sponsor or find out more, visit: www. pingpongathon.com For enquiries about the Bendigo event, please contact Dave Gillett on 0407 418 226.

Hospital builds on care MEMBER for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan has enjoyed a sneak sneak peek at the new intensive care unit under construction at the new Bendigo Hospital site. Ms Allan was joined by Bendigo Health’s chief executive John Mulder, newly installed board chair Bob Cameron and ICU director Jason Fletcher. Ms Allan said the new unit would put Bendigo at the fore of world class healthcare. “The new Bendigo hospital is being built to cater for the next 50 years,” she said. “It allows for expansion in decades ahead for an increased ICU capacity of up to 20 beds. “Curtains go in favour of single intensive care rooms, increasing privacy and noise reduction for recovery and improved infection control.” Mr Cameron said other additions to the ntensive care unit include an outside decked area for patients near the end of their stay and a dedicated patient eleva-

“An exclusive patient elevator that will service intensive care, maternity, theatre and the emergency department will also result in improved patient flow and treatment for critically ill patients,” he said. Dr Fletcher said staff in the ICU had given feedback and input dur-

ing the design process. “The central areas of the unit have been designed for staff to maintain line of sight with every patient in the unit, a critical measure towards providing world class healthcare,” he said. “There will be a significant increase in meeting spaces to allow for effective handover and

clinical discussions to place in private and these spaces will also double as areas for additional teaching and education. “Key clinical personnel, such as intensivists will all be co-located, meaning improved information sharing between staff, patient discussion and management and accessibility for nurses.”

BENDIGO Marketplace will celebrate its 20th birthday later this month . Over two decades, Bendigo Marketplace has become a key shopping destination for not only Bendigo residents but also for thousands of people from the wider region. Throughout the 20 years the marketplace has undergone several major transformations to double in size and become the thriving and bustling shopping centre it is today. City of Greater Bendigo mayor Peter Cox said Bendigo’s transformation over the years had been incredible. “Bendigo Marketplace was built on old

disused railway land that was in a great location but really was a bit of an eyesore on the edge of the CBD,” Cr Cox said. “The centre now boasts 109 stores and employs over 350 people across the centre making it an important contributor to our local economy.” The marketplace has supported many local and community initiatives including the successful Bendigo Festival. “Twenty years is certainly a great achievement and I am pleased to celebrate this milestone with the Bendigo Marketplace, the retail outlets and all of the people who are employed at the centre,” Cr Cox said.

Call for Syrian base BENDIGO residents have been encouraged to open their arms to the plight of refugees. Bendigo Community Health Services chief executive Kim Sykes said Bendigo’s proven track record in settling refugees showed the city should be proactive in welcoming more new citizens. “The work of Believe In Bendigo and the open-minded and welcoming attitude towards refugees shown by a majority of the community show it’s simply, it’s the right thing to do,” Ms Sykes said. “Syrian refugees are among

the world’s most vulnerable people. Through no choice or fault of theirs they have virtually no chance of returning home. So why wouldn’t we want to help? We can assist them to build safe lives and make homes here. “This is a great opportunity to continue to build Bendigo and cement our multicultural focus. A chance to make a great city even better. Can we afford to pass up such an opportunity?” Ms Sykes said BCHS had developed highly successful Karen and Afghan refugee resettlement programs in the past five years

through processes which could easily cater for any Syrian intake. “We appreciate the impact of trauma and our resettlement team understands what is needed to support people fleeing the sort of horror that is occurring in Syria. Our strong connection with local businesses and agencies has led to great success in resettling new arrivals to Bendigo,” Ms Sykes said. Ms Sykes said BCHS would support any authentic community campaign to establish a base for the Syrian and other refugees in Bendigo.

Healthy plus to creek walk plan or obese. “We did some stats not too long ago in inpatient and outpatient settings, and found that about 70 per cent of them are overweight or obese,” he said. “That’s a fair load to manage. So what we’re trying to do is screen all our patients for risk factors, and then lead them into programs that can help them.” It is hoped the development of such a path would encourage more people to exercise, particularly those not enthusiastic about joining a gym or a sporting club. “So courses like this, innovative free, fun – that’s the sort of thing we want for our patients. Not every patient wants to join the gym and sports club, but if they can do it in their own time, it’s nice and easy,” Mr Barrett said. “Partnering is sort of what we’re keen on doing, we can’t do it all by ourselves.”

A PROPOSED cycling path through Bendigo Creek could yield a number of health benefits, according to local healthcare professionals. The track would link existing cycling and running paths from Kangaroo Flat to Epsom, with councillors from the City of Greater Bendigo hopeful the creek could be utilised to connect all sides of the city. During an “exploratory” bike ride through the creek last week, representatives from Bendigo’s health and community organisations joined councillors to scope out and discuss the possibility of developing a trail. Bendigo Community Health prevention and population health senior manager Kaye Graves said local healthcare providers were being burdened with the demands of an increasingly overweight population. “People are physically inactive, we don’t exercise the way we used

to… there’s a whole lot of reasons why we need to increase our physical activity,” Ms Graves said. “As we get older we lose muscle and bone mass, we lose our balance, cycling is a really good option particularly for little ones and older people. “Not only is it a great mode of transport, but I’m talking about health.” She said the cost benefit of developing such a path would be felt both financially and in terms of community wellbeing. “We have issues right now with people who are morbidly obese at an enormous cost,” Ms Graves said. “The return you get if you get ‘x’ amount of people cycling as opposed to building bariatric beds, there’s every argument under the sun.” Bendigo Health’s Stephen Barrett said statistics painted a grim picture of the number of patients presenting that are considered overweight

Sustainable view

THE Sustainable House Day puts the spotlight on new passive solar builds, retro-fitted houses and sustainable gardens. The event kicks off this Saturday at the Old Church on the Hill with talks and the tiny house on wheels will also be there and open for inspection. Architects from Eplus architecture will be speed dating an architect. Learn about Go and Grow gardens and what the City of Greater Bendigo is doing for sustainability including the new organic bins. Get your own Go and Grow garden and it will also help the Sustainability Group. ArchiBlox (prefabricated housing) is coming from Melbourne to talk about its carbon positive house, and how to build

sustainably. Bill McCorkell is committed to producing sustainable homes that combine innovative architecture with prefabrication and innovative technologies. The carbon positive house is attracting international interest so go along and hear about it at 11am. Mr McCorkell is an architect with previous work on Federation Square, The Wheeler Centre and the St Kilda Pier redevelopment. Interested in hearing about Edible Bendigo? Jen Alden will talk about a project to grow food in Bendigo in backyards as well as open spaces. Ros Woodburn will talk about how getting your hands dirty can be good for you and

what is easy to grow in your own backyard. Peppergreen Farm will be open and you will be able to tour the farm and see what they are doing now including catering and selling vegetables. Most importantly they employ people and count productivity in smiles. They also get the job done and have worm farms, wicking beds and there will have a landscape designer on site available for free consultations for your own garden plans. The Eco Pods, which are 7.5 star are also open for inspection as an example of what you can do in modular homes. The Sustainable House Day is a great way for people to learn how to build sustainably. See pages 26 and 27.

FARMER Ian Gray drove off his farm at 7.30am on Friday, September 11 and he hasn’t been seen since. He was driving a white Holden Rodeo single-cab trayback ute with a distinctive stockcrate on it. The ute has a New South Wales rego AG 46 AJ. The Bunnaloo farmer is 66 and his wife Helen said he is approximately 190 centimetres. “He has grey hair and hazel eyes and everybody around here knows he is missing,” Mrs Gray said. Mr and Mrs Gray’s daughter Sarah Richards lives in Bendigo. “He may have gone to Bendigo, we just don’t know,” Mrs Gray said. “Nothing has been heard from him since he left that day, It’s 44 days now. “He has health challenges, but I have no idea why he went.” Mrs Gray said there had been several unconfirmed sightings, but nothing concrete. Mr Gray runs the Graythorn Poll Dorset stud in NSW. “I’m no farmer, I’m a farmer’s wife. Luckily the family has been helping.” Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

theatre holds open day Ulumbarra Theatre will open its doors to the community inviting everyone to explore and enjoy all it has to offer and a little extra. The chance to buy a ticket to join a unique backstage tour is just one of the opportunities for visitors to Ulumbarra on Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Tens of thousands of people have visited the theatre since it opened on April 17, but many more are still waiting for the chance to see, to show it off to family or friends or simply soak up the atmosphere. Capital Venues and Events manager David Lloyd has received many requests for the chance to just come in and soak up the atmosphere.

Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival organiser, Colin Thompson has put together a line-up of artists throughout the afternoon that will be performing in the alfresco dining area and there are historic tours as well as the backstage tours. Tours can be booked at gotix. com.au or by calling Box Office on 5434 6100.

splash park open THE Long Gully Splash Park has officially opened for summer until March next year. The splash park will be open from 10am to 6pm seven days a week during October and November before extending its hours from 9am to 8pm, seven days a week from December to March. Mayor Cr Peter Cox said Bendigo’s first ever splash park is a great place to spend a warm day and, best of all, it’s free. “The splash park was a hit with families and young people when it opened for the first time last summer,” Cr Cox said. “I hope many of them will plan to pack a picnic and make a few return tripes over the coming months. “Featuring eight different water sequences, the splash park is activated at the touch of a button. “Water continually drains away so there is zero depth and the equipment is set on non-slip concrete, making it safe for the youngest of water babies.”

more parking at school BIG Hill Primary School will have more and improved parking after it received funding from the City of Greater Bendigo. Mayor Cr Peter Cox said council will provide $29,000 to extend the existing angle parking on McInnes Street to created an additional ten parking spaces. “We will also seek $62,000 in funding from the state government to formalise parking on Prospector’s Way to create an additional 14 parking spaces at the school,” Cr Cox said.

Inclusion a hot topic By LAURA HURLEY

Cultural Diversity and inclusion are on the cards with the City of Greater Bendigo developing its first plan to tackle the issue. Mayor Peter Cox was joined by Australian Race Discrimination commissioner Tim Soutphommasane, Monash University social cohesion researcher Andrew Markus and deputy lord mayor of Adelaide City Council Houssam Abiad at a breakfast on Monday to discuss the plan. Following rallies in August and earlier this month which saw hundreds of people flock to Bendigo in opposition to a proposed mosque in Bendigo East, the plan will aim to improve social cohesion in the city. The plan will aim to improve attitudes towards multiculturalism, increase opportunities for culturally, linguistically and religiously diverse residents to participate in the community, maximise the benefits of community cultural diversity and reduce racial and religious discrimination. Mr Abiad, an Australian Muslim, applauded council’s decision to formalise their commitment to cultivating cultural diversity.

“It’s a fantastic initiative by the City of Greater Bendigo, and I think it’s really important that we keep the dialogue active,” he said. “It’s really through an open dialogue and mutual respect that we can come to the results that we are all after.” He said it was important to host the breakfast at the Town Hall, where ugly scenes in September saw a council meeting shutdown and the mayor and

Let’s have a chat about our differences... let’s have a chat about our similarities councillors assisted out by police escort. “It’s an invitation, I think, to say that everyone’s welcome at the Town Hall. “Come in, let’s have a chat about our differences – but more importantly

let’s have a chat about our similarities and what unites us as a community.” He encouraged all community groups in Bendigo to become involved with the development of the plans. “I am certain in five to 10 years from today we’re not even going to be having this discussion,” Mr Abiad said. ”I think it’s an opportunity, it’s a challenging time. “I think with challenges comes opportunities and we just need to embrace them and move forward.” Cr Cox said the plans were being developed to help shape Bendigo in the future. “Cultural inclusion is not always a given, just because people from different countries settle in one place,” he said. “Social exclusion, intolerance and prejudice can harm a city’s reputation and impact on the quality of life of residents. “Yet research has shown there are many benefits to a culturally diverse community such as increased innovation, productivity and economic advantage. The plan will be an opportunity to identify how Bendigo can harness the many cultural changes it is experiencing.”

on the move: Saturday is the day for a Fun Loong Fun Day. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Out and about for a day on the move Celebrate Children’s Week at FunLoong Fun Day on Saturday October 31 by getting together with family and friends from 10.30am to 2pm. Two walking trails will be available for families with a 4.5 kilometres starting at Kalianna Special School in Nolan Street, Bendigo.

Another 1.5km walk will be available starting at Lake Weeroona car park, as well as Nolan Street, Bendigo, with both walks beginning at 10.30am. Mayor Cr Peter Cox encouraged families to enjoy the range of free activities on offer and use FunLoong Fun Day as

a way to practise active travel. “Active travel is a great way to get from A to B and the Bendigo Creek Trail walk as part of FunLoong Fun Day highlights how easy and fun it can be. “There are so many pathways across Bendigo that connect, so you don’t have to

spend too much time walking, cycling or scooting near traffic,” Cr Cox said. “Bendigo is for all people and FunLoong helps to create a community for our local young people. They are Bendigo’s future and it is important that they are able to enjoy events specifically created.”

Do you know someone who goes the extra mile and has shown personal achievement or contribution to the greater Bendigo community? If you do know someone who fits that description, why not nominate them for the 2016 Greater Bendigo Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards. Greater Bendigo City Council mayor Cr Peter Cox said he is calling on residents to nominate people who they think should be considered for the city’s premier annual award. “If you know someone who goes above and beyond to help make Greater Bendigo a better place, why not nominate them,” Cr Cox said. All you need to do is let us know in 250 words what makes your nominee an outstanding community member, how they are role models for others to follow or how they have excelled or contributed to the Greater

Bendigo community. Nominations can be made online at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/citizenoftheyear “The Greater Bendigo Citizen of the Year has been awarded for the past 20 years,” Cr Cox said. “There are many people living in Greater Bendigo who make outstanding or selfless contributions for their community service, career, sporting, academic achievements or service to arts, culture or the environment and there is no better way to acknowledge their contribution.” Nominations for the 2016 awards close at 5pm Friday, November 27. Recipients of the 2016 awards will be announced in the lead-up to Australia Day 2016. Nominees for the Young Citizen of the Year must be under 25 years of age on January 26, 2016. Green waste truths I think it’s important that residents in the trial area for the Green waste bin collection understand that participation in this trial is not compulsory. It is indeed unfortunate that these residents were given that impression. I attempted to give information at the last council meeting on this issue – along with a few others that were also not reported e.g. saving Lake Eppalock or the Kangaroo Flat Leisure Centre – but with limited success. I believe the vast majority of our residents understand the necessity of greatly reducing our landfill, especially organic waste, which includes garden waste and kitchen scraps; but according to surveys done in many other municipalities in Australia, only a very minimal percentage of their bin audits was kitchen waste; predominantly it is garden waste. So, if people are managing their organic waste – either through mulching, composting or worm farms on property, or using a private green waste collection, such as Greenaway, which is a local company employing local people and costing ratepayers nothing through their rates – then they are free to do so. I believe there is room for a private operator in the green waste collection in Bendigo. Council is committed to supporting local businesses. Councillor Helen Leach, Bendigo

Mulch your own Congratulations to the City of Greater Bendigo councillors for finally bringing into the open the existence of green organics bin exemptions if you are managing your own green organic waste. Council staff looked at the procedures of several other councils when looking to plan how a kerbside organic service could be introduced in Bendigo. It was disappointing however that councillors missed the opportunity to look at the exemption criteria that the other councils have in place. From the other Victorian councils’ home pages I have found the following exemptions available: Those who have a green waste service through a private supplier; Multiple unit blocks can apply for a reduced number of bins, or indeed opt out of the service due to the limited garden waste produced on these properties; Properties under 400m2 can opt

out of the service; Properties over 1 hectare can opt out of the service due to their increased ability to process their own green waste. A consistent theme across councils is that residents who manage their own green waste effectively, by composting and home mulching, avoid disposal costs. I accept that the majority of people will need to use the green organics collection organised by the council. This council should be congratulating those who are already managing their own green waste, rather than making them jump through hoops to firstly highlight the existence of exemption criteria and secondly qualify for such exemptions. Andrea Metcalf, Epsom

Is the law so complex? Peter Kennedy points out in the Weekly of October 16 that City of Greater Bendigo has spent some $124,581 in legal fees in matters relative to the planned Bendigo mosque to date. How is this possible? Am I to believe that the law is so complex that the city itself does not employ anybody with the capacity and ability to put the city’s case? If the law is that complex it desperately needs changing to make it more understandable and a lot less interpretive. We all know that if you biff your spouse you are committing an assault, if you get boozed up and drive your car putting all of us in peril you are committing a crime and if you hack my bank account and steal my pension you are both stupid and a thief. All the way along we read of lawyers arguing cases on behalf of the obviously guilty, dipping their sticky fingers into the legal aid honey pot (or in this case ratepayer’s honey pot) and creating this ridiculous situation where matters legal are so ambiguous some of our “learned friends” can treat the law like a high paying game. $124,581 of ratepayers’ money has been spent and more will further be spent so that a small group of lawyers will receive a ridiculous hourly rate to put a case that simply is not too complex. A properly constituted group of elected men and women made a decision within the parameters of their delegated authority or they did not. If the highly paid executives of the city are incapable of arguing that case then I will find a year 12

graduate for them who does have that ability and might ask $25 an hour to do so. That’s about 5000 hours on current legal fee rates. Is someone having a lend of us? Stephen Colbert, Wedderburn

Queries on Campaspe I read with despair the article on the Campaspe. (Bendigo Weekly, October 16) the author got one part right the Campaspe from Eppalock to Echuca has significant environmental value. The waste and poor management of water assets by those in charge must border on criminal. Information freely available from recognised sources such as the Bureau of Meteorology clearly indicate we are entering drought and now is the time to conserve water. The NCCMA do not show any forward planning or foresight and act like kids in a lollyshop greedily selling assets for immediate gain with no thought that the lakes could run dry again as has so recently happened. Their water discharge policy is championed under the guise of environmental flows and Ms Campbell spruikes that rainbowfish and gudgeons have re-emerged in parts of the system. I wonder how they will survive when there is no water in Eppalock to send down the river (not to men-

tion all of the other fish species that are being put at risk). Another interesting point spruiked is the re-emergence of reptiles and mammals. Is she for real? They were always there. I don’t know where they re-emerged from. I have never heard a lizard say thanks for raising the water levels. It could actually be detrimental to them as higher water levels would force them from the protection of the reeds and cover along the river bank out into the open where they are move vulnerable to predation. I would be interested to know on what scientific information the lizards and mammals statement is made. Or did they ask a lizard? A valid point not raised in maintaining the health of the river would be planning to minimise the risk of blue green algae blooms. We all know these blooms are more prominent in storages and rivers with lower water levels and warmer weather. The lack of volume contributes to higher water temperatures when higher air temperatures occur. One of the best treatments for polluted waterways is an environmental flush but this may not be possible because the storages have been emptied or severely depleted. We all know how algal blooms effect fish, animals and users. Surely planning to minimise the chance or impacts of blooms should form part of any sound

management plan, not putting steps in place to screams mismanagement. The decline in storage levels is plain to see over the last three years. Surely some management at any time could have arrested the fall. Also given the weather bureau’s forecasts it will continue and steps should be put in place to minimise this. An algal bloom is easily foreseeable and their contribution to the possibility is also apparent. Another statement in the article is that managing environmental flows they are good for the social fabric of the community. Even before storage levels fall further a large detrimental social and economic effect has occurred to the community. A lot of leisure activities have been severely curtailed. Any logical analysis says this is a major social and economic loss to the region in general and most harshly to the businesses that rely solely on adequate water levels for their income and financial survival. When are we going to get responsible management of our water resources? We are not talking about running out of vegemite here. Mismanagement in our resource has huge impacts on environment, local economies and recreational enjoyment of these assets. Shane Welsh, Golden Square

Our shining star IN 365 days’ time, a new council of nine elected representatives from this great community will we confirmed as our next batch of councillors, to serve a four year term through until 2020. The next 12 months shape as incredible important for our city, and for the region. There’s so much for Bendigo to be optimistic about, and this community needs to shake off the shackles of negativity that we’ve been saddled with for much of the past 18 months or so, and focus on the opportunities that lie ahead. The many benefits and advantages the new Bendigo Bank headquarters brought to this city and to our economy during its construction and immediately afterwards as the impact of all those new and additional jobs reverberated throughout the community dwarf in comparison to what lies ahead via the new Bendigo Hospital project. The recent $1.3 billion Hawkei project win for Thales and its Bendigo workforce is a major win for the local economy.

The largely unheralded plans by dairy manufacturing giant Parmalat to invest $67 million to upgrade its facilities in its nearby North Bendigo are another great opportunity for Bendigo. Since the Weekly revealed the plans for a three-stage development to upgrade and extend the North Bendigo dairy product manufacturing capacity and relocate Parmalat’s yoghurt manufacturing facilities to Bendigo, little more has been said. For its part, Parmalat says the move is a major bonus for Bendigo and will lead to a far better use of an existing industrial site that delivers future economic benefits to Bendigo and the region. Not bad, especially considering things could easily have gone the other way. Council has a bevy of its own major projects that will start in the next 12 months, and must also wrestle with the new state government rates cap policy. The next 12 months will not be without other challenges.

Our councillors are not united in all that they do, but this in itself is not a problem – it’s actually a byproduct of democracy. But there’s no doubt good governance and a renewed commitment to the vision for Bendigo, backed by a shared determination to set aside any personal differences for the benefit of the community, will go a long way to helping keep Bendigo’s star shining as brightly as it needs to.

pk Frustrating wait for NBN with Peter Kennedy

THE trouble-plagued National Broadband Network is inching its way closer to fruition in our region, and while this is welcome news, it’s also overdue and incredibly frustrating. The major political parties have both contributed to delays, overruns, blowouts and confusion in the community from would be users of vastly superior, improved and even new technologies with the potential to radically alter the way some of us go about our daily work. I was a fan of a proposal put forward last month by the federal opposition’s communications spokesman, Jason Clare, who took a different approach to the traditional argybargy of federal political debate and said he was willing to adopt a bi-partisan approach to fixing the NBN project, at least from a cost and technology point of view. This project is that important to so many Australians, to business and to the future. Logic suggests that two groups working together have a better

chance of solving a problem than they have working separately, at the same time looking to tear each other apart as a demonstration of their own political acumen and cunning. Australians are sick and tired of these sorts of antics. When it comes to the NBN, most of us just want it done. We don’t want to know who was right, or who is right, we just want the service and its many benefits. The problem too many politicians have is they are

speeds the rest of us can only dream of. Forty-six megabits a second download or 16mbps upload is incredible to those of us wallowing in single digit download speeds – in some cases less than four or five megabits a second. And while households with faster internet might be very, very happy that they can watch Netflix, surf the net, and monitor their social media all at the same time without any buffering or interference,

When it comes to the NBN, most of us just want it done yet to see this because they are still too busy looking for the next opportunity to score a point or pick over an old problem. Some of the Weekly’s staff who live outside of Bendigo have been enjoying incredible internet speeds via the NBN for a while now. They smile rather smugly and claim

BENDIGO JASON MCMURRAY, ALICIA BARKER, MELISSA HARRINGTON, AND JOEL MCDONALD

[title of show] hits the stage A

GROUP of young Bendigo performers have taken to social media to help raise funds to bring the musical [title of show] to Bendigo in November. Through online Pozible and sponsorshop campaigns, actors Joel McDonald, Alicia Barker, Jason McMurray and Melissa

Harrington are raising money to cover show rights and production costs to bring this modern musical to life. Lead by production manager Abe Watson, and with the backing of a strong production team of skilled volunteers, the group is excited to bring a new and excit-

ing piece previously unknown to Bendigo audiences. McDonald had been toying with the idea of putting on [title of show] for more than two years. Motivation and a thirst for a creative output finally pushed him over the edge to do something about it.

“I think the piece has some amazing messages in it about chasing your dreams, stifling those inner demons and making other people happy, as well as yourself,” McDonald said. “I am incredibly lucky and thankful for the amazingly talented cast and crew that are

making my pipe dream come true, as well as the generous support that we have received from our sponsors so far.” [title of show] will be staged at the Bendigo Theatre Company Arts Shed from November 26 to 29. Tickets available at http:// www.trybooking.com/156054

DAWNE CHORUS

Ready for the Dawne B

IRD caller extraordinaire Dawne Chorus is in Bendigo this evening for her Dawne at Dusk performance. Dawne’s special performance coincides with the launch of the Nesting Instincts exhibition, which will feature a wide range of nests in nature, print and art, along with nest collections and rare books. The performance and exhibition launch are part of National Bird Week celebrations this week at Goldfields Libraries. Collections manager at Goldfields Libraries, Pam Sheean, said National Bird Week reinforces the importance of birds in our region. “Bird Week dates back to the early 1900s, and was started as a way of raising awareness of the preservation of birds at a national level,” Ms Sheean said. As part of National Bird Week,

ENDIGO residents have the rare opportunity of viewing Port Phillip’s famous RAG Theatre in Bendigo late in October. The St Kilda based community theatre group first travelled away from Port Phillip 20 years ago and will now hit the road again with their latest production, A Story of Moses. A Story of Moses will be performed at St Andrews Church Hall, Wednesday, October 28 at 7pm and Thursday, October 29 at 2pm and 7pm with an inclusive educational master class taking place after the 2pm performance.

Supported by the City of Port Phillip Council since launching in 1991, the RAG Theatre provides the opportunity for people with a disability, including those with mental illnesses, to express their artistic works with the community. RAG Theatre is supported by their council but would not be able to tour to Bendigo if it wasn’t for donations from residents and art-lovers. Single show tickets start from $8 for concession and $15 for full price, while master class tickets start from $12 for concession and $20 full price.

bookclub Olive of Groves Katrina Nannestad Harper Collins $19.99

W

HEN Katrina Nannestad first tried her hand at children’s writing she approached an agent who sent her story to a major publisher and hey presto, the story was accepted, she was in. “This is easy,” she thought. But as it turned out it was one of those lucky moments which turned out to be a false lead. “What followed next was nine years of rejection. I hadn’t really learnt the craft,” Katrina said. “And while those years were painful they were also important as I gradually gained in experience and skills.” Katrina who lives in Huntly with her family is now an established author with HarperCollins, formerly ABC books. Her Red Dirt Diaries have proven very successful and she is currently writing a new series, featuring a little girl called Olive. Olive lives with her beloved grandparents in a small, isolated community. Her grandparents have scrimped and saved to send her to boarding school where she can meet kids her own age. But Groves’ Boarding School is actually for “Naughty Boys, Talking Animals and Circus Performers” and somewhere among the anarchic set up Olive has to fit in. Olive of Groves is a very funny book and will appeal to children in the middle to upperprimary school levels. A former primary school teacher, Katrina has the advantage of knowing her readership well. “Previously I combined writing with parttime teaching, but I found that process very frustrating. When writing you need to get on a roll, wallow in the book, live in it. With my books doing well I now have the pleasure these days of writing full time. “It also helps to have a husband in a full time job,“ Katrina laughs. “It wouldn’t do to have two struggling artists living to together.” Explaining her writing routine, Katrina says she writes mornings and afternoons but also takes time out for her hobbies such as craft work and the book club with which she is involved. And aside from her husband and sons, her favourite companion is her black whippet called, guess what, Olive.

Watch out for the sauerkraut

Now is the time to fancy dress to impress

I

BLAME the Germans. Oktoberfest is happening at the end of the month, and the party organising committee at the Weekly has decided to celebrate in View Street. On the vague pretext of a staff member’s birthday, Saturday on the last day of the month is a dress-up affair at the pub. That’s why I blame the Germans. Apart from the odd loud shirt, I am not really into the fancy dress routine. Certain people do get involved with it, but I struggle at the best of times. There will be lederhosen and white blouses and the celebration of all things German, it couldn’t get any wurst. Anyway, see you there, I’ll be the one by the sausage stall with a stein of bier in my hand. My conversation is limited to Ich liebe dich and kann ich einen großen bier bitte which roughly translated means “I love you” and “can I have a large beer please?” That could make it a very interesting party in many ways. No doubt someone will mention das krieg despite all the warnings by Basil Fawlty. Can’t wait. Something looms a bit earlier though. The long-suffering Mrs Kendall’s colleague is celebrating

her 21st birthday this weekend, and the Kendall pair has been invited. I was quite keen until Mrs K mentioned it’s a pyjama party. The thought of me milling around in my magic winceyette PJs with the trusty Ugg boots just does not seem right. What’s more most of those attending will be 21-ish and will cut a better look. When I thought a bit further I realised most would be people young enough to be my children,

and it would be just too strange. If I truly took the lead and wore the outfit I usually wore to bed I would clear the room pretty smartish. I follow Marilyn Monroe’s style, without the Chanel No5. I was musing over this when Mrs K pointed out that the birthday girl’s dad would be in attendance, and takes the normal protective line with his daughter. Seems best I steer clear of pyjama parties, it could turn into a nightmare.

At least the two are far enough apart for me not to get muddled up with the costumes. Don’t suppose the 21st birthday party needs me turning up in lederhosen slapping my thighs. But it could be worse, can you imagine me getting it wrong at Oktoberfest, turning up in pyjamas, drinking beer, telling people I love them with wurst in my hand. Does not bear thinking about. - Steve Kendall Twitter: @stevekendall1

Joint effort a plus for parks A

BENDIGO park will receive some extra care as a result of a new partnership between the Department of Justice and Regulation and Parks Victoria. The partnership will see local offenders working to maintain parks and hopefully improving their own mental and physical health in the process. Parks Victoria ranger team leader, Mat Sobey described the added assistance as: “Not only an improvement of our parks but the ability for a real difference to be made in the

lives of these offenders.” The partnership was launched with five corrections team members getting to work out at Notleys camping area in the Greater Bendigo National Park. “The team did some important repair work on a walking track, making it more presentable and safer for visitors,” Mr Sobey said. “This is just the start of more great work to come.” Future projects as part of the new partnership will include walking track maintenance, re-

The widows’ plight T

WO widows were to become the beneficiaries from the charitable work through entertainment provided by the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders (SES). One of the SES members who was to provide his talents, happened to be the son of a well known Bendigo engineer, William Rueben Middleton. The son was Alfred (Fred) Ernest Middleton. At a young age Alfred Middleton showed a number of talents, including drawing, humour along with acting. Fred had produced a clever caricatures of the members of Butler’s Combination Brass Band, a band which was to play at the benefit in 1881 that the SES had organised for the two widows, both of whom were attempting to support large young families. The two widows were Mrs Boylan and Elizabeth Robson. According to one report Fred’s caricature of each of the band’s personalities and their instruments were studies in their own right and showed a good sense of humour. This caricature montage was placed on display and thus used as a promotional tool for this fund raising event. A preliminary meeting of interested persons for the widow’s fund raising entertainment took place at the European Hotel in High Street this was located on

the northern side between Wattle and Short streets. The European Hotel was directly opposite the Berlin Hotel. There were further follow up meetings with a committee established to help organise a varied and quite different program of artists and entertainers. The steering committee had decided to hire the Royal Princess Theatre and to appoint Charles McMahon to act as promoter and be in charge of the ticket sales. Mrs Robson became a widow as the result of a mining accident that her late husband Thomas Robson experienced at a mine in Golden Square. The mine where the accident took place was the South Alliance which is on the Carshalton Line of Reef. Thomas Robson had been working 27.4 metres underground on Wednesday, August 6, 1879. At about 3pm, Thomas was in a north south drive following the reef, knocking down quartz that had been fractured through blasting the ground was described as “heady”. About 100 kilograms of the material fell on Thomas, a mate who was working nearby had heard the noise and immediately called out, but there was no reply. The quartz had partially covered Robson, who had been knocked down through the fall and thrown

on to his back. This Durham born miner was described as being very experienced. Three of the other miners in his party Walter Graham, James Castairs and Thomas Hampton came and removed the fallen rock off Thomas’ body and carefully carried him to the cage so to be taken to the surface. Before the accident the other miners had heard the sound of the metal bar used to hit the ground to hear how safe it was. Mining inspector William Grainger came and inspected the site of the accident on the following day. Grainger said he had seen the quartz and slate that had fallen making the observation that the drive where Robson had been working was too small to be timbered for protection. On a number of occasions Grainger had visited Thomas in the hospital to interview him about the accident. Robson had a fractured spine and for a period of six weeks after he was admitted to the hospital he rallied, once he had got over the shock. Unfortunately infection set in and gradually he sank and passed away in January 1880.

HUMOUR: Alfred Middleton. Alfred Middleton had twice performed for the SES on this occasion La Fille de Tambour Major and Cheap Lodgings both being humorous sketches, the second one had the capacity audience in stitches at the end of the evening. Middleton was supported by J Pickup and R Walton. A total after expenses of almost £120 was available for the two widows. At the time of Thomas Robson’s accident there was considerable unemployment among the miners and there was discussion about reducing their wages. Did these factors weigh heavily on the men Thomas was working with?

VER wondered what became of the original Genesis drummer? No, not Phil Collins – the gangly youth who kept the beat for the rock band long before it found both Collins and world-wide recording fame. Having left the bright lights of school-hall performances well and truly behind him, Chris Stewart is ensconced these days in a ramshackle farmhouse outside Málaga in the hinterland of Spain’s Costa del Sol, where he juggles producing organic oranges with writing hilarious and self-deprecating autobiographical books. The title of the fourth instalment in his series about life in rural Spain refers to the winding down of his role as taxi-driver to daughter Chloé as she sees out her final year at the local secondary school and moves on to university. With an empty nest following their only child’s departure, Stewart and wife Ana occupy themselves with shelling waves of homegrown fava beans, scouting for industrial quantities of fine Spanish red wine with which to toast their ever-helpful neighbours and cooking wild boar from their own hillside for a “mystery guest” who turns out to be

celebrity TV chef and fellow Brit Rick Stein. Along the way Stewart manages to inadvertently label himself bisexual while trying to extol the virtues of coeducation to Chloé’s schoolmates in a language he has yet to conquer. He is also forced by a stroke of meteorological bad luck to reprise skills learned half a lifetime earlier while still a student as he labours long and hard to create a bridge over the roaring river that separates his family from civilisation beyond their rocky farmlet. Last Days of the Bus Club is a highly entertaining, fast-paced and colourful continuation of the story launched in Driving Over Lemons and can be read equally effectively as a natural follow-on from its three predecessors or independently in its own right. – Rosalea Ryan

ARDENING Australia presenter Costa Georgiadis is coming to Bendigo this Sunday as part of a community discussion held by the City of Greater Bendigo council. The community discussion will allow Bendigo residents to be in the engagement process for the development of the council’s fourth environmental strategy. Council’s sustainable environment manager Robyn Major said the event was a great opportunity to listen to

an expert speaker and have a discussion about the fourth City of Greater Bendigo Environment Strategy. “Costa Georgiadis is an engaging and well respected gardening guru, compost king and landscape architect. He has a wealth of knowledge on sustainable gardening and living practices and those who attend will gain some valuable tips from him on the day,” Ms Major said. “Attendees will also be able to take part in discussion groups on energy,

water, sustainable building design and native vegetation and land management. The next 12 months will be a crucial period for Bendigo in terms of the environmental and substantiality challenges facing the region as the council looks to engage and discuss with the public to try and develop the strategy. “I encourage interested residents to get involved in the development of this important strategy for Greater Bendigo,” Ms Major said.

Reach your pOTential Looming health reforms – what will they mean for Bendigo? OCCUPATIONAL therapists from across the region will gather next Tuesday to discuss how sweeping health care reforms will affect Bendigo. The joint Occupational Therapy Australia and La Trobe University Rural Health School forum will bring together policy makers, local service managers and occupational therapists to discuss important national reforms in health and social service policy. “Rural health care is changing. And so are the ways we manage the region’s major health challenges,” La Trobe expert Dr Carol McKinstry said. “One of the priorities is preparing for the local roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme in 2017. This will be the biggest reform since the late 1980s, when Australia transitioned people from mental health and disability facilities into community-care. “We also need to look at ways we can improve our services on the ground right now, because compared to the cities, rural and

regional communities have higher rates of cancer, cardio-vascular disease, mental illness and other chronic conditions.” Dr McKinstry said people in these communities often have poorer access to health care, particularly specialist mental health services. ‘We can better use technology to overcome that tyranny of distance – and not just for our clients. Technology provides new opportunities for professional development and support for health-care workers.” OTA Victoria Division Manager Kim Mestroni, says that the forum would include a round table discussion with key stakeholders and a panel discussion with local health experts. “We’ll have state and federal members of parliament, local councillors, health and disability community leaders contributing to these discussions, “So this will be a great event around some of the key issues facing health consumers, both in

Everyday Independence EVERYDAY Independence’s Lego Club is a naturally driven social skills program for children who have basic understanding of social conventions but require support to develop more complex social skills. Due to the success of last term’s Lego Club, the club will resume again this term with pre-group sessions conducted with participants and their families to identify specific goals. “A safe environment sets the scene for positive outcomes noticed by parents and teachers alike within the participant’s

everyday routines,” occupational therapist Carly Dillon said. “Children become more adept at playing reciprocally with siblings at home, listening to a peer’s opinion, playing within a group in the playground, praising their friends and using compromise to work through social conflict.” Participants undertake group challenges and take turns at special roles within the group as engineer, builder and building supplier to construct Lego

projects as a team. “The pride and confidence displayed by children has been overwhelming,“ Carly said. Message from local member Lisa Chesters ALLIED health services such as Occupational Therapy are an integral part of our local health system, playing an important role in the treatment and management of a wide range of health issues. This week provides an important opportunity for us to recognise and thank our local OTs and health services in our region. The largest local health services provider, Bendigo Health, has a strong commitment to allied health with a team of over 280 staff across its allied health services. In collaboration with La Trobe Rural Health School, Bendigo Health also provides invaluable opportunities for local allied health students. This week it is also important we acknowledge that Federal Liberal Government decisions are making it hard for local OTs to continue to deliver these vital health services. The Federal Liberal Government’s massive cuts in Health funding and the decision to freeze Medicare rebates from 1 July 2015 is having impact on the

way these services are delivered in Bendigo. In the past, Medicare Benefits Schedule fees have been regularly indexed to keep pace with the costs associated with providing quality health services and employing highly trained and skilled staff. The rebate freeze will see a $2 billion cut from Medicare. The sad reality is that the costs of providing services, such as Occupational Therapy, will continue to increase, while the rebate will remain at the 30 June 2015 rates. Bulk-billing services will be significantly affected and it is likely that out of pocket fees may need to be increased or introduced to cover the gap between the cost of services and the Medicare rebate. I know from talking to Bendigo residents that there are people in our community who are not seeking the medical care they need because of new or increasing costs. Health care is becoming a luxury that many people are struggling to afford. Putting a barrier between

health services and patients can only result in more people ending up in hospital, adding to overall costs in the health system. Increasing costs jeopardises the important contribution allied health services makes to patients’ quality of life and overall wellbeing and threatens to create a two tiered health system. I believe that Australians have already paid for their health system through taxation, and through the Medicare Levy. Decent health care should not be dependent on your ability to pay. Medicare rebates need to keep pace with increases in cost to health care services to ensure every Australian has access to the highest quality of care and treatment possible. This week join our call on the Federal Liberal Government to reverse their massive cuts to Health funding and the decision to freeze the Medicare rebate. Sustainability Liz

Annette BENDIGO Sustainable House day has inspired Annette Sayle and Graeme Smith to build a sustainable home using recycled double brick with high levels of insulation. All living areas face north with large double glazed windows. They have used ideas from the first Sustainable House day which they attended. The polished concrete floor is spectacular and they saw one like it on the first open Day. They have coins and glass in the floor so it is colourful and interesting. Their house is around 21 degrees all year round and in winter they use a slow combustion fire while

in summer they will have a small reverse cycle aircon to use in heat spells. They have good cross through ventilation and also a wet back on the fire to boost their solar hot water. Outside they are growing vegies and have chooks for eggs. Annette supports Riding for the Disabled so you will be able to have a cuppa and cake at their place and make a donation. She is making home made lemon drink and several different muffins and slices. So if you are getting weary looking at all the houses you can get afternoon tea at Annette’s.

LIZ decided to build something different on her environmental block in Strathdale. A house with a small footprint, one that would be surrounded by a native garden and birds. Although the house would be smaller it needed to be filled with light so nearly every room faces north. Raked ceilings make it feel light and airy and with open timber beams it has an industrial feel as well. It also needed to be sustainable. Double glazing and lots of insulation were added to keep temperatures stable. A small PV solar system and solar hot water mean that power bills are rarely payable. Liz says this house works brilliantly in winter with rooms being 20 degrees on a sunny day.

Sustainable House Day For summer cross ventilation is important and trees are growing on the western side to provide more shade with vines growing to shade the northern living area. A reverse cycle aircon is used in the really hot weather. A native creeper fence provides privacy for the house next door as well as a home for small native birds. The house borders the national park where Liz enjoys walking and photography. Photos are for sale and so is the house. Yes you can buy one of the houses this year. This architect designed house is unique and while small, feels open and spacious. Liz thinks you should never underestimate the power of north facing light.

Sustainability

Tiny house takes shape One couple’s dream of sustainability has resulted in a home of their own for less than $50,000 IMAGINE paying off your house in three years. Luke and Beatrice will as they are building a tiny house and living more sustainably on our planet. The tiny house is in Bendigo where Luke and his brother Scott are finishing off the inside of the house. Luke and Beatrice will spend less than $50,000 and after three years they will pay off their tiny house and save on expensive Melbourne rent. A rental apartment wouldn’t even be their own space like this Tiny House will be. It is designed around their lifestyle and has a yoga section in the middle where the trailer has deliberately been built over the wheels to provide a nice space to do their yoga. Luke spent a long time researching options from caravan and motoring bodies so he knew it had to be no bigger than 12.5 long and 2.5 wide and 4.2 high. It had to be on a strong steel frame and now he has had this section built. They are using eco sustainable

products and will have a small kitchen and even smaller bathroom. There will be all things to make a comfortable home and it will be super insulated to help keep the temperature stable. A small hot water heater and a wood heater will provide for winter and it has windows placed opposite for cross through ventilation in warmer weather. Of course it will be able to face north on any land. They are determined to build a house that needs no fossil fuel and are using solar and alcohol for cooking. Luke and Beatrice both work full time so when the house is finished they will look for somewhere and someone to share land resources with in Melbourne. Luke and Beatrice have made their dream a reality. It is not easy to be a trailblazer but they are showing everyone else what can be done and now on Sustainable House day in Bendigo they will share their journey so others can build a tiny house.

LINDS and curtains can make a huge difference to the ambience of any room. And that’s where Shady Blinds’ Jared Keely mobile service really excels, letting you choose the style, colour and texture of your new blinds and curtains in your own home or business, seven days a week. “Being a mobile business my overheads are extremely low which is reflected in my prices,” Jared said. “I’m aways happy to meet customers after work or on the weekends for an obligation free quote when it’s convenient for them.” Shady Blinds have access to the latest materials and fabrics from both Australian and international manufacturers such as

Charles Parsons, Nettex, Warwick Fabrics and Zepel. Or perhaps you would prefer the timeless simplicity of Venetians or the look of traditional wooden shutters. “S-track or s-fold curtains as featured recently on televison’s The Block are proving very popular at the moment,” Jared added. “However the double roller blinds with the translucent and block-out blinds are still probably the most popular product I sell. “While the honeycomb blinds are great for insulation and exceptional for keeping light out.” Phone Jared on 0437 775 313 anytime for an obligation free quote today.

Booster DSH

Booster is a very social boy who loves other cats and is looking for a new home with a lovely family. He would love to go to a home with kids to play with him. He is only a short haired cat and won’t need a lot of grooming. He still has a long life ahead of him. If you think that Booster is the man for you, then come in and meet him today.

Female 7 years 9 months. Brindle & White. Madge is a beautiful gentle giant. Prior to coming here she mainly lived inside and loved her spot on the couch. Madge walks lovely on lead and is extremely social with other dogs. Great fencing will be needed to safely contain her. She has been toilet trained and would love to continue to be mostly inside. If you have a large couch that you can offer this gorgeous girl please come in to meet with her.

Support rolls in for tennis By JOEL PETERSON

THE Bendigo Tennis Association’s support for wheelchair athletes is “what you dream about” according to wheelchair tennis legend Danni Di Toro. The BTA is gearing up to host the Australian National Wheelchair Championships for the first time from Friday, November 13. The BTA has a long history with wheelchair tennis, having hosted an annual event for many years, but the national championships represents a coup for the association according to executive director Leon Retallick. “It’s fantastic, we used to run the Victorian Wheelchair Open here for many years and we have been working closely with Foundation 97 over the last few years and have run a number of social events,” Retallick said. “Tennis Australia decided we were keen and we thought we would give it a go, and we are really happy to have the tournament as part of our festival of tennis.”

The winner of the men’s singles event will be awarded a wildcard into the 2016 Australian Open. The men’s draw will feature Australia’s No.1 Adam Kellerman (NSW) and No.2 Ben Weekes (NSW), who have both won the Australian Open wildcard play-off in previous years. Foundation97, which raises funds for those with spinal cord injuries, will host a fundraising dinner for wheelchair sports on Thursday, November 12. The event, run in partnership with Tennis Australia, will also mark the beginning of the Roll to Rio campaign. Di Toro said the tournament marks a continuation of the fantastic support the BTA has given the sport. “I think it just creates an incredible platform for all wheelchair tennis players and hopefully inspires a few people to pick up a racket,” she said. “From Foundation 97’s point of view we have had a lot of support from the BTA over the years, it’s one of the best venues and the BTA is one of the most wonderful clubs and they

Di Toro said having the wheelchair event aligned with the festival of tennis was a massive step forward.

It is good for those people at en elite level who will be contesting for the wildcard but also for people who just want to rock up on a court and try their hand at it.” “It’s next level, it’s stuff that we all dream about in terms of inclusive sport,” she said.

Stringer’s success earns award

GUN: Jake Stringer.

HIS breakout 2015 season, including an Al-Australian nod, has seen Bendigo’s Jake Stringer take out the Bendigo Weekly and Prime7-backed Sportstar of the Year award nomination for September. The former Bendigo Pioneer and Eaglehawk junior played a vital role in the Western Bulldogs’ run to the AFL finals, leading the club with 56 goals while spending more time in the midfield. After a busy season last year off the field, in which he became a father, the talented 21-year-old burst onto the scene in his third AFL campaign. Stringer spent a lot of time in the backline and VFL last year before cementing a regular senior spot last in 2014 and has not looked back. His development was rewarded with a spot on the field in the 2015 All Aus-

tralian squad, and he is set to travel to Ireland for the 2015 International Rules series with teammates Bob Murphy and Easton Wood. Stringer told westernbulldogs.com. au last month he sees a big future for the club. “It’s been a good season for the club. We’ve really grown as a group and we’ve taken our game to a new level,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of help from the forward line and the midfielders as well in teaching me different roles. “We’re starting to build a really strong group in the forward line but also in the midfield as well.” Stringer and the All Australian squad play the first International Rules contest against Ireland on November 21 at Dublin’s Croke Park.

Pios’ new faces THE Bendigo Pioneers Football Club is again breaking new ground, announcing the members of its first rookie squad this week. The squad of 40 features players from far and wide within the Pios’ expansive region who will have their development fast-tracked. Regional areas such as Boort, Kyabram, Pyramid Hill, Colbinabbin, Tyntynder, Woorinen, Woomelang, Mildura Imperials, and Nyah will all have representatives, as will Bendigo clubs Sandhurst, Strathfieldsaye, Eaglehawk, South Bendigo and Golden Square.

Pioneers coach Brett Henderson said the squad would provide more opportunities for players across central and northern Victoria. “Some of the players in the rookie squad could be added to the main list before the season starts, or during the season,” he said. “There are a lot of factors to consider. Our recruiting team and network spotters will be at a lot of matches. “Their feedback will be important, not just for the lead-up to next season but for seasons to follow.” The rookie squad will train with the main under-18 squad across

Big tests await Spirit BY JOEL PETERSON

AS the club embarks on possibly the toughest stretch of its 2015/16 Women’s National Basketball League schedule, the Bendigo Spirit has made a strong start to its campaign. Sitting at 2-1 after two rounds – a surprise, confidence-building win over Townsville included – Bendigo is well positioned heading into the first of three consecutive double headers. The first comes this weekend – on Friday night against the undefeated Dandenong and returning home to Bendigo Stadium on Saturday night to face Canberra.

Bendigo made its home debut last Sunday with a resounding 16-point win over Perth in front of a packed crowd, a victory that Spirit star Kelsey Griffin said the team was extremely pleased to come away with. “Perth is getting better each year that I’ve been here, they aren’t a team that you can overlook... to be able to protect our home court and to know you have a win on the board when you go to play them over there is great,” she said. The loss to South East Queensland (in round one), as much as you hate losses, we learned a lot from it and took it to heart, and it set a good standard for what we

want to be this season. “As for as team identity, I think it helped us set what we want to be like, we still have a way to go but I think we were set on the right track after that loss.” Griffin and Belinda Snell both turned in standout performances in the win over Perth, both named in the WNBL team of the week for round two. Bendigo restricted Perth to 65 points on the weekend and Griffin said that the team can again hang its hat on the defensive end despite showing some exciting signs on offence. “We are starting to get that mentality where you know you

en’s side belted Maryborough 61 to 40, Charlotte Brancatisano leading the way with 12 points. The men were also dominant, using a 27-6 third quarter to springboard to a 107-63 win over the Blazers. Daniel Hansen top scored with 26 points. The Braves’ next home game is this Saturday at the Bendigo Stadium versus Wodonga Wolves, women tip off at 6pm and men at 8pm.

go will take its opponents lightly. “It’s a massive game, we will really have to be up to play that game,” Griffin said. “The thing about them is that they seem to be all the same height, they’re big and so athletic and ready to run. When we played them in pre-season it wasn’t a great showing for us, and we have to come to play this week. “Canberra will be tough on Saturday too, they are a really capable side, but our focus is definitely on Dandenong at this stage.” Bendigo’s game against Canberra at Bendigo Stadium on Saturday night tips off at 7pm.

Braves win big THE Bendigo Braves continued their strong start to the Country Basketball league season, winning two out of three games at the weekend. The Braves men’s side went down to Seymour on Saturday night by 18 points despite 13 points from Jake Cowling and 11 points from AJ Brohm. The men’s and women’s sides were both in action the following day, each recording wins. The Braves wom-

can get out and defend your player because you know the team is behind you,” she said. “We have definitely built on our defence and that needs to be our identity because that is what we can control.” While Canberra have given Bendigo plenty of problems in recent years, recording multiple wins at Bendigo Stadium, the opposite is true for Dandenong. Bendigo’s recent record against the Rangers is nothing short of dominant, before a loss in round 13 last year Bendigo had won its previous 12 games against the Rangers. That doesn’t mean that Bendi-

THERE were wickets aplenty as the 2015/16 Emu Valley Cricket Association season got underway last weekend. Only two sides, Spring Gully and Marong, reached 200 on what was undoubtedly a day dominated by the bowlers. The Crows were bowled out for 203 as they opened their season against Axe Creek at Spring Gully Oval. The hosts were rusty out of the blocks, stumbling to 5/43 before the steadying influence of Des Gilmore came to the crease. Gilmore crafted 78, with no other Gully batsman scoring over 24, extras contributing 38 runs to the total. Greg Burns claimed 3/47 off his 14 overs, while Grant Le Poidevin and Travis Nolan each took two wickets. United recruit Lachlan Ross had an instant impact for the Tigers, taking three wickets as they restricted Golden Gully to 149 at Langdon Building Oval. Ross, Andrew Duguid (4/15) and Alex Collins (2/51) did the bulk of the damage. Clint Prime (32) and Paul Barber (31) top scored for the Cobras, who claimed the wicket of Collins as United went to stumps at 1/9. At Maiden Gully, Marong’s Scott and Jeremy Ross top scored as the Panthers made an even 200 in their first innings against last season’s wooden spooners. Opener Scott Ross made 41 in a bright start for the visitors who reached 2/106 before somewhat of a middle order collapse, losing 5/24. Jeremy Ross (36) and Andrew Brown steadied the ship, putting on 63, before Josh Sheehan cleaned up the tail. Sheehan finished with figures of 4/26, with Craig Burn the standout taking 5/41 before Gully went to stumps at 0/10. Emu Creek made a strong start with the ball at Club Court in its match against Sedgwick, reducing the Rams to 2/9 at stumps after being bowled out for 196. The reliable Simon Marwood top scored with 51 for the Emus while Daniel Chamber-

STEADY: Maiden Gully’s Rob Brown. lain (30) also made a solid contribution. Luke Southon did the damage for Sedgwick with three wickets. The Rams made a nervous start with the bat, losing openers Sam Alcock and Andy Friswell cheaply, with the dangerous Matt Dwyer unbeaten at stumps. Finally, Mandurang made a solid start to its premiership defence, skittling West Bendigo for 147 before heading to stumps at 3/56. The match was moved to Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane due to concerns over the area surrounding the pitch at Ken Wust Oval. Paceman James Pietromonaco took four scalps for the Rangas, who made a super start and had West Bendigo at 2/5. Travis O’Connell (35) and Michael Peters (56) dug in for the Redbacks and put on 83 for the third wicket but had little support. Hayden Rowley took two wickets for the Redbacks as they began their defence including the critical scalps of Matt Giri and Cain Ladiges.

EVCA SEASON FIRES UP p37

Cricket’s bush bash By JOEL PETERSON

VICTORIAN Premier Cricket will hit Bendigo this weekend, with two day-night games to be held at the Queen Elizabeth Oval as part of the league’s Bush Bash round. Bendigo held the first Premier Cricket regional clash in 1993 and 55 venues have followed suit, but this weekend marks a first for the initiative with women’s games being played in both Bendigo and Bairnsdale. St Kilda meets CaseySouth Melbourne in men’s action from 2.30 on Friday before Plenty Valley tackles Prahran on Saturday from 2.30pm in the women’s match. Dunkeld and Yarrawonga are the two new venues to host matches this year, and premier cricket development and strategy manager Mike Ronchi said having women’s cricket involved in the round was extremely important to

Griffin lifting Spirit AFTER a dominant performance in front of a bumper home crowd last Sunday against Perth, the Bendigo Spirit are back at home on Saturday against Canberra. Before that, they take on unbeaten league powerhouse Dandenong in a huge round three road game tonight. – Story Page 38

the competition. “Having women as part of the Bush Bash is an important step forward for the sport,” Ronchi said. “It’s great to show the regional cricket community the skills of the best women’s cricketers in the state.” Prahran comes into Saturday’s clash off a dominant win last weekend over Dandenong while Plenty Valley has lost both of its opening two clashes. There is no shortage of quality between the two sides, the likes of Vic Spirit keeper Emma Inglis team mates Katherine Hempenstall, Nicola Hancock and Australian representative Jess Cameron be in Prahran’s lineup. Plenty Valley will have the services of England international Danni Wyatt and VicSpirit’s Kirsty Lamb. In the men’s game Bendigo’s James Seymour will return to his home town for CaseySouth Melbourne to face

the likes of former Australian spinner Michael Beer and gun batsman Graeme Rummans, both lining up for St Kilda. Seymour has been in cracking early season form, making three half centuries before being dismissed for eight last weekend. Casey-South Melbourne is still searching for its first win of the season and sits second last on the table while St Kilda has won two of its four games and is currently just outside the final eight. Melbourne and Prahran are undefeated atop the men’s premier first ladder. On the women’s side, Prahran is fourth with one win and a loss while Plenty Valley is winless and second last on the ladder. Bairnsdale will host the other women’s game to be played regionally this weekend, when Dandenong takes on Essendon Maribyrnong Park at Bairnsdale City Oval.
