Celebrating 52 Momentous Years

2016 - 2017

introduction

Welcome to the 52nd celebration of the Bendigo Sports Star awards, and to one of Bendigo’s gala events of the year. These awards began back in March 1965, when the awards night, then known as the Caltex Sports Star Awards, was held at the studios of BCV-8 in Lily Street. Founding members of the Sports Star committee were Cyril Michelsen, the visionary editor of the Bendigo Advertiser; Alan Jenkins, General Manager of the Bendigo Advertiser; Harold Griffiths, Independent; Dick Turner, Independent and Basil Ashman, Independent. After 52 years Basil Ashman remains a vital part of the Sports Star committee, and a much loved figure in our local community. The Mayor of the day was the legendary Dick Turner. The first recipient of the Sports Star of the Year Award was Eaglehawk cyclist Frank McCaig. The Sports Star of the Year Awards have grown in stature to now also feature the Cyril Michelsen and Maxine Trust Funds for up and coming athletes, the Bendigo Weekly - PRIME 7 Bendigo Sports Star of the Year, and the Hall of Fame award introduced in 1993 – 1994. The first inductees were Olympic gold medallist Faith Leech, footballer Bob McCaskill, and lawn bowler Don Sherman. In more recent times the Faith Leech Achievement Award was introduced to acknowledge the inspiring achievements of one local member of the sporting community, and in 2014 – 2015 the Healthiest School awards became part of Sports Star, with Violet Street Primary School the inaugural winner. This year, we are proud to announce the inaugural recipients of the Sports Star Scholarships. Thanks to the generosity of the local business and sporting community, six local athletes will be acknowledged and supported via this new initiative, which aims to make the journey to success for our emerging athletes just a bit less challenging.

Celebrating 52 Momentous Years

2016 - 2017

M O N T H LY S P O R T S S TA R S february 2016 Robbie Hucker (Cycling) For Robbie Hucker, a strong start to 2016 was a sign of things to come. The Bendigo cyclist finished eighth at the National Road Championships and seventh at the Herald Sun Tour during Victoria’s summer of cycling, but March was where he really shone. Hucker won the Tour of Taiwan riding for the Avanti IsoWhey Sports team, with an 18 second gap to Francisco Mancebo of Spain in second. Hucker has had a busy start to 2017, including finishing eighth again in a gruelling National Road Championships.

APRIL 2016 Aaron Wilson (Bowls) Lawn bowler Aaron Wilson had a tremendous 2016 campaign winning not just one, but two world championships. His first triumph came at the Under-25 World Titles on the Gold Coast where he won the singles crown, before tasting victory alongside Queenslander Brett Wilkie in December to take the open pairs world championship. He added a silver in the world fours at the same tournament, all the while competing for Clayton in Melbourne Pennant Bowls.

JUNE 2016 Matthew Dellavedova (Basketball) Matthew Dellavedova and the Cleveland Cavaliers broke a 52-year championship drought when they defeated the Golden State Warriors in seven games in June’s NBA finals. While Dellavedova played less of a role than in the previous campaign, sitting out the clinching game seven win in Oakland, his role impressed the Milwaukee Bucks enough to ink him to a four-year, 38 million dollar contract. He also represented Australia at the Rio Olympics, the Boomers falling agonisingly short of a medal.

JULY 2016 Laura Woolley (Clay Target Shooting) Rising clay target shooter Laura Woolley was yet another local to claim a world title in 2016, and her efforts in Ireland were twice as nice. At Esker Shooting Grounds at the World Down The Line Clay Target championships, Woolley took out both the women’s title and the teams, alongside cousin Emma Cox. She also finished second in the juniors category, narrowly missing out on a third world championship. Woolley heads to the Australian titles in Wagga Wagga next month, where this year’s world titles will also be held.

M O N T H LY S P O R T S S TA R S September 2016 (JOINT WINNER) Bendigo Braves (Basketball) The Bendigo Braves achieved just about everything possible in the 2016 South East Australian Basketball league season, breaking an 11-year title drought in an outstanding season. Led by coach Ben Harvey, league MVP Jeremy Kendle, All-star Damian Johnson and a league-best defence, the Braves romped their way to a league-best 21-3 record and elusive title, vanquishing arch rivals Mount Gambier along the way.

september 2016 (JOINT WINNER) Joel Selwood (AFL) Though Joel Selwood’s Geelong Cats season finished on a disappointing note, the former Bendigo Pioneer and Sandhurst product enjoyed another outstanding year. Selwood played 24 games for the Cats and averaged over 28 disposals per game, good enough for ninth in the AFL for total posessions. Named All-Australian captain for the second time, Selwood finished second in Geelong’s best and fairest behind runaway Brownlow medallist Patrick Dangerfield.

OCTOBER 2016 (JOINT WINNERS) Bella Ayre, Emma Grant & Sarah Last (Bendigo Thunder/ Women’s AFL) Three Bendigo Thunder players were a part of history in October, when Bella Ayre, Emma Grant and Sarah Last were drafted to play in the first AFL Women’s competition. Ayre and Last were both selected by Carlton, with Grant taken at pick 91 by Collingwood. They were joined by two more Thunder teammates, Jess Kennedy and Hayley Trevean, both selected as undrafted free agents, with Ayre, Grant, Last and Kennedy all playing in the opening game of the inaugural competition earlier this month.

OCTOBER 2016 (JOINT WINNER) Jake Stringer (AFL) Jake Stringer was also a part of a drought-breaking title, as the Western Bulldogs won a long awaited second AFL premiership, 62 years since the first. Stringer had a quiet day but stood up when it mattered most, booting a vital goal in the final term as the Dogs beat Sydney by 22 points. After being named an All-Australian last season, Stringer kicked 42 goals for the Dogs from 23 games and is set for a big 2017 as the “Sons of the West” defend their title.

M O N T H LY S P O R T S S TA R S november 2016 Michael Taylor (Handcycle Marathon) Handcyclist Michael Taylor claimed a huge victory in November, winning the handcycle section of the revered New York Marathon. A multipletimes Australian representative, Taylor tried his luck in the big apple at the world’s biggest marathon and easily won in a time of one hour, 23 minutes and six seconds - with Spain’s Vicente Yanguez coming in second with a speed of one hour, 31 minutes and 15 seconds. He also recently qualified for the Australian titles, held in April.

december 2016 Maddie Batters (Kayak) After injury and study commitments forced her into a break from competing, Strathfieldsaye paddler Maddie Batters made a winning return to the water late in the year. Batters claimed a state whitewater title before setting her sights on December’s National Wildwater Canoe Titles at Eildon. With national selection up for grabs, Batters powered her way to gold on the open women’s sprints and classic events. Her performance saw her selected to head to Austria later this year for the under-23 World Championships.

january 2016 Liam Bowe (Cricket) The former Sandhurst spinner, who was only playing local first grade as recently as last year, took the leap to play for Essendon in Victorian Premier Cricket. He impressed so much that a call from Big Bash League franchise the Melbourne Stars beckoned, with the 19-year-old earning a place on a New Zealand tour. Again he impressed, earning a roster spot and an eventual debut on the hallowed MCG turf against the Adelaide Strikers. He took a wicket with the final ball of his first over, trended number one on twitter, and earned a follow-up game in the semi-final against eventual champions, the Perth Scorchers.

healthiest schools award Schools throughout the region were invited to nominate why their school is the healthiest in central and northern Victoria. Nominees must document what strategies or initiatives they have within their school community that defines why they should win the title. This year, a second category was introduced to the Healthiest Schools award, with schools invited to submit a statement outlining their most innovative health initiative. The Healthiest Schools award is sponsored by Bendigo Health, and exists to showcase what participating schools in the region have done, and are doing, to promote important health messages to students and their families. In a region challenged by a diverse range of health issues, educating the younger generation about the necessity to live a healthy lifestyle is vital to transforming our society into one that is a lot healthier and more sustainable. 2014 - 2015
