Winter Break offers Chance to Get Away By Rachel Shaykin Public Relations Intern

he Holidays are right around the corner, and that can put a lot of stress on student shoppers as they try to find the perfect gift for loved ones while wrestling with finishing off fall semester. Sometimes it gets difficult buying the same person a gift every year over and over, so the situation calls for something new and thoughtful. For BGSU students, winter break means four weeks of no classes, family time, and a well-deserved break. For some, it can also mean taking a much-needed vacation after pushing through finals. Some students are lucky enough to go home and take a vacation with their families after spending a majority of the semester away from home. “My family and I are going to Orlando, Fla., because my dad is running the Disney Classic. He will be running a 5k, a 10k, half

marathon, and a full marathon. We will be cheering him on during his races as well as visiting some of the Disney parks. I like to go on vacation because it is relaxing, I get to spend time with my family, and I love to discover new places.” says BGSU junior Gina Oser. Other times, students are able to escape the bitter winter of the Midwest and head to other warm and exotic places. For BGSU senior, Lauren Perez, she was able to get out of Lima, Ohio and escape to Hawaii last winter break for the holidays. “My grandparents decided to take me to Hawaii because they’ve wanted to go for so long. It’s very isolated but still so much to do and it’s beautiful. I was on the beach and it was stress free. No homework”. For students looking to get out of their hometown and don’t have any plans, there are many travel sites that allow students to

Through the travel agency EF College Break, students can search for organized trips all over the world and choose any month and what kind of style trip they want. Another popular option is abroad trips over break. BGSU offers trips abroad through the university and some can even earn college credit. Past trips have gone to places like Austria, Spain, Italy and more. For more information students can go online to the International Programs and Partnerships page through the Bowling Green Website. For students who don’t have the funds to purchase a plane ticket, road trips are always a fun and more affordable option. It is very easy to get some friends together, split gas, split hotels and take a drive to

somewhere several hours away. With new years coming up, there is no better time to get out of your hometown for a fun new years celebration. Regardless of where you go on vacation, it is always important to plan and to be equipped. Itineraries and emergency cash are also good ideas to keep in mind, especially when travelling alone or with a few friends. Most importantly, use winter break vacations as a time to relax and get prepared for the beginning of second semester. n

hen it comes to the holidays, most people are feeling festive and want some sort of holiday decorations. But the University wants students to understand the rules when living on-campus, so that safe living situations are created. “When people ask us about decorating, we always talk about the idea of being inclusive. Maybe instead of appealing just to the holiday you celebrate, decorate for all holidays, that way Christmas, Hanukah etc. are accounted for” senior associate director of Residence Life, Tim Shaal said. Students who are interested in decorating a room should refer online to the Student Handbook. Below are some Do’s and Don’ts to get your room prepared for this holiday season!

World Celebrates Holidays beyond Christmas F

or many Americans, enjoying the holiday season simply means celebrating Christmas time. However, many in the U.S. and others around the world celebrate holidays throughout the year that though they may seem more uncommon to American customs, is just as important to those cultures.

HANUKKAH Meaning “dedication” in Hebrew, Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple after the Jews drove Syrians out from their Promised Land in 166 B.C. Following the Hebrew calendar, Hanukkah may occur in November or December. On each evening of the eight-day holiday, a candle is lit on the menorah after sundown. The ninth candle, called the shamash (which means “helper”), is used to light the others. Jews usually recite blessings and display the menorah in a window during this ritual. Other traditions include eating potatoes pancakes, known as latkes and playing with four-sided spinning tops called dreidels. Also like Christmas, some exchange gifts during Hanukkah.

KWANZAA Translated from Swahili, meaning “first fruits,” Kwanzaa occurs between Dec. 26 and New Year’s Day. Dr. Malulana Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966 to promote unity among the African American community after the Watts riots in Los Angeles. Many who celebrate Kwanzaa focus on the Seven Principles, which are the following ideals: Unity, Selfdetermination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity and Faith. On each evening of Kwanzaa, one of the seven candles on the candleholder, called the Kinara. After the lighting of each candle, a principle is discussed for that day, beginning with the black candle in the middle on the first night symbolizing Unity. Those who celebrate Kwanzaa celebrate a feast on Dec. 31 called Karamu. Gifts are also exchanged on this holiday.

BOXING DAY Usually, Boxing Day follows Christmas Day on Dec. 26. Boxing Day may occur on Monday if Dec. 26 falls on a Sunday. Many people may notice this holiday directly after Christmas. Even fewer may know why this holiday appears on the calendar. What is the most unknown about this holiday is the origin of its name. In old times, bosses gave their servants

and workers gifts in a “Christmas Box.” Today, Boxing Day is celebrated as a bank or public holiday in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Hong Kong. Boxing Day may also be considered the Black Friday of Britain, Canada and Australia. Retailers in these countries may draw the most shoppers on one single day of the year with many door buster deals and dramatic price reductions.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE RAMADAN As a holy month of Islam, Ramadan is for fasting, self-reflection and prayer. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islam calendar. Many followers of Islam celebrate Ramadan because it is the month when Muhammad first received revelations of what became the Quran. Muslims who have reached puberty and are in good health fast from food and drink each day of Ramadan from dawn to dusk. During this time, followers are also to avoid smoking, partaking in sexual behavioral, thinking or speaking impure or unkind thoughts and words, and practicing immoral behavior. Many see this time of fasting to practice self-restraint and introspection. Also, many see it as a time of cleansing the soul and empathizing with those in the world who are hungry and less fortunate. Eid al-Fitr, a major feast is celebrated the day after Ramadan ends. The feast includes meals with family and gift exchanges. Id al-Fitr may last three days after Ramadan ends. Following the Islam lunar calendar Ramadan will extend from early June to July. n
