ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAKS Offers Students Chances to Give Back to Communities By Samantha Hester Public Relations Writer

The participants of this trip will have the opportunity to learn more about the cave system as well as familiarize themselves with the environmental identity while supporting the National Parks Service in their preservation efforts.

S

pring break destinations tend to vary year by year. Not only are students changing their destinations, but they are also changing their purpose for traveling in the week granted free of academic responsibility. While some students are spending their week vacation on a beach, hiking in the mountains, or at home with family and friends, others make the choice to spend their time by giving back to the community. The student-run organization BG Alternative Breaks (bGAB) offers the opportunity for volunteer experiences. bGAB is a student-run organization at BGSU that focuses on volunteer work in the United States. Involvement in the program works with the “Center for Community & Civic Engagement” to plan these types of trips. Each semester, bGAB travels to various destinations centered on engagement with social issues.

The 2017 trips gives students interested three options for civic engagement during BGSU’s spring break period of March 4-12. The first trip, titled “Helping Protect Our Lakes, Rivers, and Streams: Water Quality and Environmental Issues,” takes place in Murphy, N.C. During that time, the bGAB members will be working with the Hiwassee Watershed Coalition. The coalition’s purpose is to protect the water quality of the Hiwassee River. Students participating will support these efforts through the removal of invasive species and other environmental hazards. The second trip, titled “Preservation and Protection of Natural Resources” is in Mammoth Cave, Ky. Mammoth Cave is more popularly recognized as the longest known cave system in the world and serves as an ecosystem for various species. The group will be partnering with the National Parks Service to focus

on environmental conversation and natural landscape preservation. The participants of this trip will have the opportunity to learn more about the cave system as well as familiarize themselves with the environmental identity while supporting the National Parks Service in their preservation efforts. The other option for an alternative break is in Richmond, Va., and is titled “A Fresh Start: Refugee Resettlement in the United States.” Members of this trip will be joining the International Rescue Committee in their resettlement efforts to resettle, employ, integrate and educate refugees so they can prosper in their new homes. bGAB states on their website that as of “June 2016, there were 21.3 million refugees in the world.” Considering the growth of refugees, the United States is accepting an increasing number of refugees that were forced to flee conflict or persecution

SPRING BREAK For those who are unsure of spring break plans or maybe want to try something outside of the college student norm, bGAB is a great program to get involved in. Not only is participation of each trip beneficial to the community, it’s a great way for these students to build skills that they may use in the future which many survived for years against unbelievable odds. For each of the three trips, there is a fee of $275 per student, which includes transportation, housing, meals, etc. There is also a required application process beforehand that is used to find out more about those who are interested, as well as their reason for choosing volunteer work as their alternative spring break. While it’s no secret that many college students prefer a beach vacation with their friends, the organization, as well as the opportunities it offers to students wants to ensure the prospective participants are passionate about the volunteer work. In addition to the interest of the volunteer work,

the organization wants these students to enjoy the skills they’re getting out of each experience. What differentiates these students involved in bGAB from other college students is that they prefer volunteering over a beach vacation with friends. For those who are unsure of spring break plans or maybe want to try something outside of the college student norm, bGAB is a great program to get involved in. Not only is participation of each trip beneficial to the community, it’s a great way for these students to build skills that they may use in the future. The student-run organization on campus is continuing to grow and the members are only getting better at what they do. n

SPRING BREAK! Playa Del Carmen

Your Destination Awaits

By Melissa Noel Public Relations Intern ou’re given an entire week off from school: no 8 a.m. wake-up calls to trudge through the snow, no assignments or your crazy roommates…where would you go? Many students choose to travel away from home during their Spring Break. While some students prefer a swimsuit and sunglasses, others prefer to grab their skis and snow gear. For spring breakers seeking a relaxing fun-in-the-sun getaway, there are many options in and outside of the United States. According to U.S. News, some of the top warm weather getaway locations are: Miami Beach, Fla., Maui, Bahamas, Cancun, South Padre Island and Playa del Carmen. These locations all claim to offer more affordable lodging in the spring because the winter visitors have left and the summer visitors have not yet arrived, providing the perfect gap for college students to save a little money during their vacation.

Cancun, Mexico seems to be a popular destination for spring breakers this year. Two Bowling Green State University students are traveling to the hot-spot to enjoy all-inclusive resorts. “It is my first spring break while in college so my mom and I are having a girl’s trip because we don’t get to see each other that much anymore. I’m so excited because I’ve never been to Mexico before,” said freshman Early Childhood Education major Ruthie Berger.

If you would like to stay a little closer to Bowling Green, Mad River Mountain is Ohio’s largest ski and snow resort. Located in

Zanesfield, the resort is only an hour and a half drive from campus. Mad River Mountain even offers an event in March geared towards college students craving an exhilarating retreat. “We do College Fridays all season long and we do something special called College Fest, typically on the third and the fourth. We like to try to get them [students] before they leave on vacation if they are going anywhere,” said Mike Mihnovets, marketing manager at Mad River Mountain. College Fest is basically a larger version of College Fridays, which includes perks for students such as discounted lift tickets and gear rentals.

“College Fest is basically our last College Friday, 2 a.m. opening and we also allow them to come out on Saturday as well. In addition, the discount is offered to everyone on that day,” said Mihnovets. SUCCESSFUL SPRING BREAK TRIPS REQUIRE: Good planning and being smart makes for good spring break travel By Samantha Hester Public Relations Writer

S

pring break expectations for most students seem to be pretty consistent year to year. Most want a good time with friends, ideally in a tropical location or even skiing the slopes. Whether your ideal spot is infamous spring break beach Panama City, Fla., skiing the mountains of Denver, or even hiking the depths of the Grand Canyon, each spring breaker should be adequately prepared for their week free of college responsibility. The getaway isn’t going to happen overnight, it takes a little bit of planning. Considering we aren’t the only university with the luxury of spring break, it’s best to start planning early for various reasons. One of them being it saves stress for the trip as a whole; no one wants to throw together a trip last minute with the possibility of limited options. Another reason being you want to ensure you’re getting the best deal at your desired vacation spot of choice. This also solidifies the number of people going. If you have your group on-board from day one, it’s smooth sailing from here on out. Until we have some sort of underground, jet-setting way of transportation, you will be traveling by air or by car. If traveling by air, it’s fairly easy to find a good price on airfare as long as you’re consistently searching. In a recent study reported by Paul Brady and Laura Dannen Redman of cntraveler.com, “The best day to buy airline tickets is Sunday, especially if you’re booking more than 21 days in advance.”

In a recent study reported by Paul Brady and Laura Dannen Redman of cntraveler.com

“The best day to buy airline tickets is Sunday, especially if you’re booking more than 21 days in advance.” Depending on where you’re going, sometimes airfare is included with ticket price of the trip. On the other hand, driving to your destination cuts into time spent on the beach, but seems to be the cheaper route. Not to mention, a road trip with friends adds to the thrill of the upcoming week.

It’s always best to “expect the worst and hope for the best,” right? With that being said, prepare to spend more money than you think you will. By allowing more cash than you think is necessary, it saves an awkward phone call to your parents with the shameful request of more money for the week. Spring break resorts have been a noticeable trend over the years. Panama City Beach is no longer the spring break holy land it used to be and students looking elsewhere have the right idea: the all-inclusive resorts, many outside the country. The only major requirement is a passport and a suitcase because once you arrive anything you need from food, drinks and a place to sleep is already paid for. Aside from lodging and transportation the cost of food and if you’re of age, of course, alcoholic drinks can easily burn a hole through your wallet. If you are venturing to an all-inclusive resort, all of those luxuries are provided and most times finding a good deal is relatively easy as long as you’re proactive about searching. Since there is no reason to be stressing about spring break, there are various agencies to make this set-up organized and stress free. “My friends and I booked on Black Friday and our $1,300 trip turned into $750 for six nights all-inclusive,” said BGSU senior Vincent Hanes who is going to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

While the planning process is essential to the process, spring break is virtually impossible without one thing: money. It’s always best to “expect the worst and hope for the best,” right? With that being said, prepare to spend more money than you think you will. By allowing more cash than you think is necessary, it saves an awkward phone call to your parents with the shameful request of more money for the week. “We were planning in September and wanted to get it done as fast as possible. We just did our research on the city as to where the ideal college spot would be and booked everything through Expedia,” said Haines. He also mentions it’s the best way to plan your vacation in his opinion. Spring break is the perfect opportunity for businesses to promote themselves and their events, specifically when their audience is college-student based. As a first time spring break goer, definitely expect a persuasive sales pitch as to why the weeklong VIP pass to the main club/bar as well as some type of membership

they’re offering is “so worth it.” While many of these businesses have offers that sound like it will make the experience one for the books, be cautious while listening to their offers because more often than not the deals aren’t as great as they are played up to be. Spring break is a week anticipated by college students all over the nation. Expect to see things you may never be able to un-see. This is essentially a territory of rowdy college students wanting to make memories just as you are, so don’t be scared to talk to people and enhance the experience. While it seems like common knowledge, most college spring breakers, such as BGSU senior Haley Weinberg regrets the excessive amount of clothes she brought. This can lead to overcrowding in either room or transportation. While it tends to vary amongst different airlines, checking a bag can get pricey if you’re suitcase is too heavy. “Advice I’d give from my experiences is to never underestimate the strength of the sun – locked in your room with sun poisoning is not how you want to spend your spring break,” said Weinberg. Year by year, there are always viral news stories with a negative headline about a spring break trip gone wrong. No matter the scenario, always utilize the buddy system to ensure you’re looking out for each other. Since this is a trip with friends, you want to make sure everyone is having a good time while also looking out for your best interests. If it’s not the ultimate spring break golden rule it’s definitely in close second: know your limits. While spring break is all about making memories and having the best time, that doesn’t mean making one decision that can ruin the trip for everyone. We’re old enough to know right from wrong – or in other words, don’t make a decision you know could end badly. Everyone makes mistakes but don’t be the mistake that puts you on the news. Overall, spring break consists of some of the best memories made throughout a college experience. While it’s important to make these memoires, it’s better to go into the trip adequately prepared with realistic expectations. n

Prepping Your Car is Vital for Safe Spring Break Travel

S

pring break is quickly approaching and many students are preparing for their trip. Some student breaks may consist of a road trip to a destination hours away. In that case, here are some helpful, and sometimes necessary, travel tips to prepare the vehicle for the long drive ahead.

4 Schedule a checkup Perform a maintenance check up on your vehicle before hitting the road. It is important to make sure that your wipers are new in case of a lot of weather issues, such as snow or rain. Students should be checking their fluids as well. Also make sure that a proper insurance inspection is up to date so that if anything happens while traveling it will be able to be covered by your insurance. Make sure to get your oil and oil filter changed before adding additional miles to your vehicle. “I recommend checking your car lights and blinkers because one time my lights went out while I was traveling through the night and there was not much I could do on the road,” senior Pete Seymour says.

4 Brake Check Have a local service station inspect brake pads to make sure they are not worn out or need replacing. “It is very important before hitting the road for a long drive to make sure that you have checked your brake pads because you never know when they could need replacing. It is difficult for some drivers to tell if their brakes are worn out,” detailer Justin Overholt says.

4 Stay charged Check the car’s battery to make sure that it is charged and is holding a strong charge. Con-

stant starting and stopping, particularly if you’re in cold weather, or happen to leave your lights on, can drain the charge on a battery. And you wouldn’t want to be at a rest stop and have your car not start.

4 Tire Inspect your tires for any cracks in the sidewalls or if you have a slow leak and have topping it off to get around town, get it checked out. Make sure that there is a large amount of tread left. Check the tire pressure to ensure that your tires are filled to the necessary amount for better gas mileage and safer driving. Double check that you have atire gauge, jack and spare tire are accessible in the vehicle. “The easiest way to check if your tires are road trip ready is to hold a quarter upside down in the tread. The top of George Washington’s head is visible than you need new tires to ensure traction in all weather conditions,” a Tireman service tech, who asked not give his name, said.

4 Be prepared Make sure to pack supplies incase of an accident or medical issue. Make sure that your car has an emergency kit filled with a flashlight, blanket, first-aid kit and some basic tools. Look into getting AAA before heading out on the road for instant roadside assistance.

4 Packing Rooftop cargo boxes should be filled with bulky light items. Heavy things on the roof of the car can make the vehicle more difficult to handle in emergencies. “Check the vehicle’s load capacity so that you aren’t putting too much weight in the car,” Overholt said.

SPRING BREAK 4 Tracking the trip Even though most cellphones have GPS installed, it is handy and increases trip safety to bring a portable GPS navigation system. This will make it easy to find gas stations and rest stops along the way. Also, depending on where you are headed, phone reception could get lost on the road causing you to become lost. But by packing a GPS device you will retain your signal and it is a safer approach to navigating and driving in a strange place. A GPS also alerts drivers of traffic and offers alternative routes.

4 Borrowing or renting a car If you are borrowing a car double check the

February 1, 2017 | PAGE 11

car to make sure it is capable of traveling the distance. If you plan on renting a car, make sure to follow all the guidelines and regulations about the rented vehicle. Enterprise Rent-ACar is located on Main Street and serves many students on their travels. All renters and drivers must be at least 21 years of age and certain vehicle restrictions apply to renters and drivers under the age of 25.

4 Estimate road trip costs Students should put aside gas money to make sure that they have enough money to get to their spring break destination. Maybe alternate who fills up the tank, but make sure gas money

is discussed while planning your getaway. Pack the car with snacks so you don’t have to buy as much food when you are on the road.

4 Be patient and safe While driving to your spring break destination expect to hit traffic. This is a time where a lot of students are excited while driving to their destination. Make sure you are driving safely and following the rules of the road. In the end, preparing your car for the road trip is just as important as preparing yourself for the break itself. Contact your local service station or rental care agency for further assistance. n

Fun in the sun requires moderation and caution:

By Rachl Shaykin Public Relations Intern

pring break is a week famous to college students for getting away with their friends and have a great time. Although some choose to go to a cooler climate, most choose warm vacation spots inside and outside the United States. If you are in a hot climate, it is always important to make sure you stay hydrated and eat. It is easy to forget about that when you are having a good time with your friends and a lot of other people on the beach. It is always smart to bring a bottle of water around with you as well. If you are in a resort, many locations have water dispensers located all around the pool areas. With being in the sun, it is also important to wear sunscreen. Although many want to get that spring break tan, it is a drastic difference from being in northwest Ohio compared to points south that have a high UV value to the sunshine. Any SPF is better than none, and you will be thankful for that when you have friends who get burnt. Drinking in a large crowd of people in an unknown place causes many dangers. It is always important to stay with a group. Be aware of your surroundings as well as the

safety of other people around you. Drugs and alcohol surround a lot of hot spring break destinations. You should never let yourself or your friends wander off with other people. It is always important to be on high alert and exercise caution at all times in vacation destinations. For those lucky enough to be leaving the country, you have to remember you are not in a college town. “Last spring break my friends and I went to the Bahamas. It is a different culture and so many different kinds of people vacation there. I am happy that my group planned every little detail in advance because it is hard to plan things spur of the moment in a different country,” says senior Marissa Rotilie. When traveling to an all-inclusive resort, many of the details are arranged. But students need to be careful to make sure that some details don’t fall through the cracks when planning. Be sure to double check with the agency you booked with to make sure you aren’t missing details. When traveling out of the country, it is always better to have arranged private transportation to and from the airport instead of relying on public transportation. Most of the time if you talk

Also, before you arrive to your destination it is always smart to budget and plan how much money you are taking out. In some places you will need to exchange American money to foreign money. You need to make sure you are exchanging money in legitimate places to make sure you are not getting ripped off. Spring break has the capability of being one that makes lasting memories of your college career. By taking a little extra time to plan every part of the trip and make sure safe decisions are made, it is guaranteed to be amazing. n
