PREAMBLE - Orient Islamic School
T
he establishment of the Orient Islamic School in 1959 came about after a long struggle spanning some fifteen to seventeen years from the inception of the idea to the completion of the buildings. The idea of the school was mooted in 1936 and the founders set about identifying suitable land for the project. The first site chosen was in the vicinity of the Botanic Gardens. However, as a result of the
objections from the white residents in the area, the founders had to abandon the project. Subsequently, in the 1950’s, the founders acquired some 80 acres on the Bluff and had plans drawn up to build a boarding school for our children. Once again, the local ratepayers objected and the project had to be abandoned even as the foundation stones on the proposed buildings were being laid. Eventually the land of which the school is presently situated was secured because of the direct intervention on the part of the Prime
Minister, Jan Smuts who was prevailed upon to instruct the Durban Municipality to make the present land available. As a consequence, the school was eventually opened in 1959. The present members who manage the school today are by and large the children and grandchildren of the founders. The school was originally opened as a government aided institution, where notionally, the State agreed to provide ONE POUND for every POUND THAT THE COMMUNITY collected. This 3
was ,however, a misnomer because the government specified an iron and timber structure with the result that, in reality, the community put in “NINE POUNDS” for every ”ONE POUND” put in by the state. In any event, when the new Schools Act was promulgated in the mid - 1990’s, the State tried to wrench the school away from the community. The school was constrained to go to Court and fight two cases which were touch and go, but both of which were successful by the Grace of God, the 4
result being that the court declared that the community was the owner of the school and that it could be made “INDEPENDENT.” We have accordingly operated as an “INDEPENDENT SCHOOL”since 1998. As you can imagine after more than“FIFTY YEARS” the physical campus appeared tired; furthermore, the world has changed so much in the interim that the campus has to be adapted to cater for the needs such as technology. We have embarked on an ambitious program to refurbish the school.
Enclosed please find a very brief brochure which graphically demonstrates this. We are very pleased to inform you that we “ORIENT “are ranked amongst the best performing schools in the province and in the country. To illustrate, in the past ten years a candidate from Orient has always featured in the Provincial Honour list of top matriculants as well as the Mayoral recognition awards presented by the Ethekwini Municipality. In 2012, the top performer in the Independent School
sector in the province came from Orient. The school is also listed among the top five schools that have produced the most number of candidates with 6 or more distinctions in the 2012 Senior certificate examinations in KZN. We operate at the highest levels of excellence in governance. We also provide financial assistance to learners in need, in the excess of R1.million per year. The student fee income, the minimal subsidy received from the state together with sundry donations take care of our
operating budget which is presently on a break - even basis. What this does not allow is for the refurbishment referred to above. In the circumstances, we are constrained to approach well wishers as yourself without whose support and assistance we would simply not be in a position to do the necessary. We have only started the drive a few months ago, We therefore ask you to kindly give your serious consideration to our appeal and favour the school with a donation from yourself. The school plays an invaluable role
within the community and that we carry forward the legacy which we inherited from our forebearers. We look forward to hearing from you with a positive response at your earliest convenience. We are writing to you out of respect for you time considering the frantic pace of modern life. RENOVATION PROGRAM
After 53 years of continous use by our children and the community the modernization and refurbishment vof the buildings has become a necessity. The Trust Board of The Orient Islamic Educational Institute agreed to embark upon a fund raising drive among its Loyal Donors to source funds for the proposed projects which are listed in this booklet.
• The immediate need arose to renovate Block “B” of the building which housed the Management, Classrooms and Musallah areas. • The Current hall needed a complete overhaul and the capacity to be increases from +/- 450 to around +/- 700 patrons. • It was also necessary to cater for the caterers and space was found beneath the current stage in the basement this facility will benefit the community using the hall. • New live-in quarters are also planned for our supervisors at the rear end of the hall. • The construction of a new science block. • Improvement to a new play area for Grade RR to Grade 3 has already been upgraded. • Improvement to existing classrooms and installation of electronic 6
educational equipment as well as air-conditioning of classrooms that are yet to complete. Part of this improvement has been completed. • Improvement to the front Facade of the building and driveway entrance/car parking area. • Reversal of the corridor in block C and a new Male Learner entrance. • Investing in a Shariah Compliant Endowment Policy to maintain excessive increase to school fees in the future. This will assist to employ the best educators for our earners
