PUBLISHER’S

NOTE

Wow! That was fast. Didn’t summer start just last week? I know it has to do with my advancing age, but summer never seems to last as long as in previous years. Enjoy these last few days of relaxation — the hectic days of school are almost here again. Speaking of which, check out our master calendar for all 15 public school systems in Jefferson and Shelby Counties (plus the Alabama School of Fine Arts) on pages 22-23. It’s fascinating to look at all of these calendars in one place, and it may be helpful for you to know when children are out for a day in different parts of Birmingham over the course of the school year. The Birmingham Public Library has launched a new initiative called “Real Men Talk” to help mentor young men who lack father figures at home. Read about this effort on page 6. We’re also excited to welcome a new magazine to our family, Bham Pets. This quarterly magazine is designed with animal lovers in mind, and the feedback for the Summer 2019 issue has been amazing! Read more about this publication on page 16. Got an idea or question? I’d love to hear from you. Drop me a line at matthew@jbmcmedia.com. Thanks for reading, and for sharing some of your time with us. Thanks for reading!

BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY

‘REAL MEN TALK’

strives to pair male role models, teens By Matthew Allen The Birmingham Public Library (BPL) launched a new initiative on June 15. “Real Men Talk” aims to provide youth in Birmingham with positive adult male role models, and while the program is primarily aimed at mentoring teen boys without a father figure in their home, females are invited to be part of it as well, according to BPL public relations director Roy Williams. “This program is modeled after the ‘Real Men Read’ program, held annually at Robinson Elementary School in Fairfield,” Williams said. “It’s an after-school male mentoring program series featuring men of various professions talking to teens about their careers, sharing advice about real life issues,

and answering questions any teen would like to ask an adult male.” The library is seeking adult males who would like to be part of the program. Interested men can reach out to Williams by calling (205) 226-3746, or emailing rlwilliams@bham.lib.al.us. The program kicks off in September and will be implemented in all 19 branches of the Birmingham Public Library. Organizations that already provide services for young people, as well as churches or other religious organizations that wish to partner with BPL, may also contact Williams to express their interest.

Just for Dads Growing up, my favorite television show was M*A*S*H. I have seen every episode multiple times. In high school, my nightly routine was watching ABC, followed by M*A*S*H and then bed. I often wondered what it would be like to be a soldier and if I would be tough WARD enough to handle war. WILLIAMS Recently while I was alone with control of the remote, I encountered a M*A*S*H marathon and found myself watching multiple episodes. As an adult with teenage boys, I watched M*A*S*H with a new frame of reference from my teenage years. I was amazed that the same show could teach different lessons when viewed through a different perspective and life experiences. In life and parenting, there is wisdom in receiving different viewpoints, counsel, and outlooks when navigating different challenges. I have benefited from countless adults, coaches, church friends, and family who shared their perspectives and life experiences with me. I had a strong premonition of what marriage and parenting would be

One of the common mistakes parents make is teaching their kids wrong lessons at the wrong time. like when I was 20. I have learned a lot about marriage and parenting in the last 25 years and have found that some of my ideas were accurate, some changed over time, and some were completely wrong. One of the common mistakes parents make is teaching their kids wrong lessons at the wrong time. We want to teach our kids to be tough and get up on their own when at the time they need a hand up; we are lenient when we need to be strict; or we punish when we should show mercy. I encourage you as a father to surround your children and family with as many healthy experiences as possible and to continually seek wisdom. I have prayed that my kids never know the deep hurt of evil and that they are protected from those who would harm them. I’m thankful for the advice, wisdom, and encouragement I have received as a parent. I’m grateful that God teaches me and works in my life, and I’m hopeful my kids will benefit from my new perspectives.

SPEECH AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY: BUILDING SKILLS FOR SUCCESS We want children to successfully participate in everyday activities — in home, school and community settings. We provide services in a home setting [or we can come to you] to build skills for children and adolescents, so they can do just that.

MEDICAL SPOTLIGHT

PROFESSIONAL Meet Dr. Hilary Anderson, the newest pediatrician with Urgent Care for Children. BFFM: Tell our readers a little about yourself. Dr. Anderson: I was born and raised in

Kentucky, and attended medical school at the University of Kentucky. My husband (who is also a physician) and I both matched for residency in Birmingham, and we have fallen in love with this city! I’ve also completed my pediatrics residency from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. BFFM: What drew you to practice at Urgent Care for Children? Dr. Anderson:UC4C is such a unique practice. I love their mission and their vision, and providing care for children at a practice that focuses on evening and weekend hours was appealing to me. And, UC4C is the first Sensory Inclusive Urgent Care in the nation, and I’m proud to be part of a practice that has taken the steps necessary to achieve that designation. BFFM: At which location will parents be able to find you? Dr. Anderson: I will be practicing from both our Vestavia Hills location (opening soon!) and our Trussville location. BFFM: What does free time look like for you? What are your interests? Dr. Anderson:Of course, I love spending time with friends and family. My husband and I welcomed our first child earlier this year, so we are busy loving on her. My husband and I both attended the University of Louisville for undergrad, so we love Cardinal football and basketball, too! BFFM: Thank you for your time! Dr. Anderson:Thank you as well!

Dr. Hilary Anderson Urgent Care for Children, the first physician owned and operated specialized pediatric urgent care center in Alabama, was founded in 2017 with their first location at 500 Cahaba Park Circle, Suite 100, on the Highway 280 corridor. They opened a second location in 2018 in Trussville, at 117 North Chalkville Road. Their vision and mission is to “provide quality care, convenient care, continuity of care.” This June, they announced three new locations opening soon in Alabama: Vestavia Hills, Northport (Tuscaloosa), and Madison (Huntsville). Visit them online at childrensurgent.com, or call them at (205) 848-CARE.

It’s great for families to get outdoors and be active, and that includes our pets! Check out a local dog park and let the whole family have fun. 1. Cahaba Dog Park, 531 Cherokee Drive, Trussville This park is the result of a successful public/private partnership in Trussville. What started as an online conversation among several like-minded Trussville citizens grew into a 1.5-acre off-leash park behind Spradling Field. Only dogs are allowed; dog handlers must be 16 years or older, and all dogs must be vaccinated. For more info, visit them online.

2. Beneful Dream Dog Park, 7305 Highway 119, Alabaster This $500,000 dog park opened in 2012, after former Shelby Humane executive director Jenny McInerney submitted a video and essay for a nationwide contest sponsored by Beneful. The dog park is inside Veterans Park in Alabaster and includes splash pads, exercise games, rings, and dedicated spaces for large and small dogs alike.

3. Remy’s Dog Park at Red Mountain, 2011 Frankfurt Drive, Birmingham

BARK at the PARK Otis The Golden at Remy Park Photo courtesy of Kelley Moore

This is the largest dog park in Alabama, with more than 6 acres of shaded space with benches, and large areas for running and playing with your dog. It was recognized by Southern Living as one of the “10 Great Southern Dog Parks.”

4. Bark Park, 2408 Stouts Road, Fultondale This dedicated dog park sits adjacent to a children’s park in the city of Fultondale, and features large fenced areas for large and small dogs alike. Just outside the park is a creek that many dogs enjoy on hot days.

5. The Dog Park at Loch Haven, 3437 Loch Haven Drive, Hoover Situated on 17 acres, this public dog park in Hoover features fenced areas for small and large dogs alike, a 0.4 mile walking track, an obstacle course for dogs, and a covered pavilion perfect for picnics.

6. Green Springs Dog Park | 1871 Green Springs Highway, Birmingham This dog park, located on 2.6 fenced-in acres, was one of the first public dog parks in the area, dedicated in 2009 by the city of Birmingham. The park includes double gates and dividers for large and small dogs.

7. Irondale Dog Park | 301 Ruffner Road, Irondale Originally located at the Station at Grants Mill shopping center, Irondale moved its dog park in early 2018 to Ruffner Park.

8. Pelham Barks and Recreation Dog Park | 2020 Pelham Park Blvd, Pelham Opened in September 2018, this park includes 0.2-acre small dog and 0.75acre large dog areas separated by a 10-foot buffer. Pet owners can relax while their pets play, and dog waste stations are installed to help ensure cleanliness.

9. Hueytown Dog Park | Intersection of Hillside Drive, Hueytown Road, and Forest Road Hueytown’s first dog park, built on a former walking track, opened in early 2019. There are separate areas for small dogs and large dogs (over 35 lbs.), and a double gate to ensure animal safety while entering and exiting the off leash areas.

How Chamber membership works for me. As a small business owner, my investment in The Shelby County Chamber was a great decision for my company for a variety of reasons, but the special discount I receive from Office Depot as a Chamber investor is unbelievable! Every time I go, I receive a discount, but I almost didn’t believe the Office Depot salesperson on my last visit: I’d ordered 500 sheets with color printing, cut in half that came to almost $700 with tax. When I shared with them my Chamber discount, my total was only $112 with tax. The savings on this one order covered my annual Chamber investment – for multiple years! Being a Chamber investor pays off.
