What is Myopia? Myopia is nearsightedness. Nearsighted eyes are usually too long, which makes far away objects seem blurry. Just like feet get bigger and children get taller, the nearsighted eye gets longer over time, and children often need stronger glasses every year as their eyes continue to grow. Myopia tends to grow between ages 7-18 My Child already wears glasses or contact lenses. Why control myopia? Controlling myopia only prevents it from getting worse, as it can’t be cured. When the eye becomes more myopic, a person is at greater risk for serious complications like cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachments. These serious conditions cannot be fixed with glasses or contact lenses, so preventative measures are critical. Facts About Myopia • Myopia grows at a rate of 0.50D per year – enough to need new glasses • Myopia is associated with conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachments • For about 75% of children, myopia progression will stop by age 18 What are my choices for myopia control? • Corneal Reshaping Contact Lenses. Similar to braces or a retainer from an orthodontist, these are worn at night to change the cornea’s shape so the patient can have clear vision all day without vision aids. They slow myopia down by bending light. • Soft Bifocal Contact Lenses. These lenses, usually worn by those age 40+ to help with distance and near vision, are also shown to help slow down myopia. • Atropine. Using this eye drop once a day helps to slow down the progression of myopia.

Just for Dads On Sunday, November 3, Alabaster City Schools dedicated its new Bosendorfer Imperial Concert Grand Piano with a concert in its state of the art Performing Arts Center. During the intermission, the superintendent of schools WARD asked me, “Who would have WILLIAMS thought Thompson High School would host a concert like this in a facility like this?” I looked at Dr. Vickers and truthfully answered, “You did. You are the one who set the goals and high expectations for Alabaster schools.” If you Google the definition of high expectations, you are bound to get a wide array of definitions. It seems to be a phrase that most everybody thinks is important, but there are many different definitions and meanings. The most common consensus is that it’s about attitudes and expectations that are forward thinking. Someone has to dream, set goals, and determine the direction and vision, or people pay a price. High expectations seem to be a common
denominator between every successful, family, team, company, church, and government organization I have studied or been a part of. High expectations are an important part of protective factors of strong families. A mistake parents may make is believing they can have high expectations for their children, but not have high expectations for themselves as parents. Many parents stop thinking about ways that they can improve as adults and get stuck and settled in their ways. There is always room to grow and be forward thinking as you enter a new year, to learn new skills, to be an encouragement for others. The advantage to having high expectations on yourself is that you are continually improving, continually staying engaged to those around you, and continuing to seek ways to see a future no one else has thought of before. My family and community are better for the high expectations and vision set by the Alabaster school leaders who saw Alabaster as a place that could be better. PICKY EATERS? There’s an app for that. By Matthew Allen
Raise your hand if one (or more) of your children is a picky eater. Just like with many situations in life, there is now an app for that, thanks to a Hoover mom. “We wanted to build a one-stop tool that aided kids and their parents to develop healthier eating habits that will last a lifetime, and to help parents end the meal time battle,” said Kassady Gibson, CoCreator of the Food Explorer Club App. Gibson and her husband were tired of the battle that accompanied nearly every meal, so they put their more than 20 years of experience in the tech industry to work and created this new app. Those picky eaters, now 8 and 5 years old, helped aid in the development of the app. The Food Explorer Club App uses gamification, so that kids can earn badges and get points, which can be redeemed for rewards when they make a variety of healthy food choices. The app awards kids with badges and points when they make healthy food choices, however, when kids are consistent with better food choices, bonus badges are earned. In addition, kids can trade in their points for better prizes, which are established by the parents – based on their family traditions and beliefs. Over 100 families tested the app over the summer, and they all gave rave reviews. “Spending time with family creates lasting memories,” said Gibson. “We wanted to help parents end the meal time battle.” The Food Explorer Club App is available in Google Play and the App Store. ALABAMA’S WALK TO
END EPILEPSY LEADS NATION

When Sara Franklin became executive director of the Epilepsy Foundation of Alabama in August of this year, the organization’s premier fundraiser was less than three months away. The Walk to END EPILEPSY, an event held by affiliates of The Epilepsy Foundation throughout the United States, brings together families affected by epilepsy and similar seizure disorders, medical partners, sponsors, and other supporters. Participating affiliates host a walk in their community, with participants who raise money to benefit medical research around the disorder. Birmingham’s event, held November 2 at Railroad Park, was already on the schedule and plans were underway. Franklin, with her background in public relations and event planning, wasted no time.
“We have a very strong network of families and partners throughout the state,” Franklin said. “Our board of directors and sponsors were ready to do what was needed to make this event more successful than it had ever been.” And successful it was. In 2018, the walk raised about $13,000. The 2019 walk brought in more than $65,000, with donations continuing to come in following the event. At the walk on November 2, more than 700 people from all across the state came together to share laughs, meet vendors, and make the ¾-mile walk around the park’s outer loop. Birmingham Fun and Family was proud to help sponsor the event and promote it to our readers. To those of you who made financial donations or walked at the event — or both! — we offer our sincere thanks for helping the more than 54,000 people in Alabama living with epilepsy and similar disorders. There’s nothing quite like curling up with a good book for a catnap, which is literally what Socks does every day, thanks to one family’s love for animals. During the fall of 2015, Pinson city councilor Robbie Roberts’s wife and daughter were driving down Tapawingo Road and spotted kittens that had been dumped, says Allison Scanlan, director of the Pinson Public Library. “The Roberts family loves cats, so they rescued all six kittens,” Scanlan says. After caring for the cats for a few weeks, they brought them by the library, hoping to find them homes. Scanlan says the library director at the time, April Wallace, had talked about having a library cat. “Of the kittens, Socks was the most laid-back and friendly, so we tentatively made plans for him to be our new library cat,” Scanlan says. “In January 2016, we decided to let him stay at the library for a few days to see how he felt about being there — and he’s been at the library ever since.” While library pets have become popular across the country, Socks is the first one for the Pinson Library. Patrons got to help name the new addition during a voting contest and chose Socks, although his full name is Socrates Prints Hugo.
“Socks won because he looks just like the illustration of ‘Socks’ from the Beverly Cleary book, and he has white feet,” Scanlan says. “Socks is short for Socrates — since he’s a highly educated cat.” Not only is he smart, but Socks is also laid back, likes people and is always up for a good cuddle, Scanlan says. “Sometimes, if patrons stay in the library for a while, he will want to catnap on or near them,” she says. “Most people, especially children, are very excited to see Socks. Many people ask specifically to see him when they visit the library,” she says. If anyone is scared of or allergic to cats, Socks will spend time in his room or Scanlan’s office during their visit. But even some who have been afraid of cats in the past have really warmed up to him. “Socks has a lot of fans,” Scanlan says. “Some people drive from other parts of the county to use our library just to see Socks.” She says he’s met people from Illinois, Kentucky and Virginia who were visiting the area and made a point to come see him. He even has his own Facebook page, Socks the Library Cat. “We love being known as the cat library,” Scanlan says. “Several people have told us they were having a bad day or dealing with struggles, and spending time with Socks helps them to feel better.” Shop local and support our advertisers! 23
