LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to Discover Gardendale, the inaugural yearly magazine our Chamber of Commerce. We hope you will find it useful in navigating the Gardendale community and learning about all of the amazing things it has to offer to those who live, work and play here.
I serve as the Executive Director of the Chamber where I have the very easy task of bragging on our amazing chamber members on a daily basis. The Chamber is active and intentional in promoting our members and showcasing the goods and services they offer, and we are always looking for new, creative ways to do this. I can frequently be seen out in the community on my little yellow bicycle (Gardenia) visiting our members and learning ways we can further assist our members and community.
One initiative we are very excited about is a new workforce development program we are launching in 2023. After meeting with employers, we determined the best way we could help with workforce issues is to train the next generation of employees. With this in mind, I will be teaching a life skills class to 8th graders as well as high school homeschoolers in our community in the fall. This class will cover budgeting, healthy eating, conflict resolution, managing emotions, and so much more. Students will also get a chance to meet with Chamber members in various industries to learn about and explore various career options.
We are so glad that you have chosen to be in Gardendale, and if there is anything we can do for you at your Chamber, please do not hesitate to reach out to me (or flag me down on my bike).

LETTER FROM THE MAYOR
Welcome to Gardendale!
As the mayor, I’d like to personally welcome you to the beautiful city of Gardendale. Located only fifteen minutes from downtown Birmingham our unique location allows our residents to enjoy the benefits that a big city offers, such as sports, entertainment, and exquisite dining while living in a small town that is known throughout the state for its charm and sense of community. As a born and raised, lifelong resident of Gardendale of almost 65 years, it’s a great place to live, work and play. And, it’s a place that I chose to raise my children and now watch my grandchildren grow up.
Our business community is growing rapidly. Just this year alone, we are adding national brands such as Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, Chipotle, Jiffy Lube, Chicken Salad Chick, Jersey Mike’s, Dunkin Donuts, Taziki’s, Taco Mama, Sonic and our latest, Ulta Beauty. This momentum continues to spread and we plan to capitalize on it. Our Gardendale Chamber of Commerce does a great job in helping every business, both large and small, be successful year in and year out. If you’re looking to start or open a business there has never been a better time or a better place to choose.
There are many reasons to choose Gardendale for your personal or business needs. First, we are a very safe city with a low crime rate and we have excellent employees in both our police and fire departments, all who dedicate their lives daily to serve and protect you.
On the education side, we offer two private schools and four public schools that we are very proud of. On the public school side, we are very proud partners with JefcoEd and we are both committed to make our local schools the very best they can be.
Our city is proud to offer several facilities designed to enhance the quality of life that our citizens expect and deserve. Our Civic Center serves as the hub of our city providing opportunities such as a gymnasium, walking tracks (indoor and outdoor), weight rooms, meeting rooms and an exhibition hall. There’s also an amphitheater and lots of green space that allows us to offer special community events on a regular basis and our yearly Magnolia Festival that attracts 40,000 visitors from across the southeast in the spring. Also, adjacent to the Civic Center, we have a first class Senior Center that provides unique offerings for our senior community. Just down the road is our recently renovated Library that we are very proud of; located in a peaceful, serene setting it a great place to read, study, or socialize with many activities designed for those of all ages.
On the recreation side, our parks are second to none. We are nearing completion of a major renovation of Kenny Clemons Park where we offer soccer fields, playground, splash pad, dog park, biking and hiking trails, flag football fields, and a disc golf course.
Additionally, other parks are located throughout the city with more playgrounds, athletic fields and a field dedicated to those with special needs, Pate Field our “Field of Miracles”.
But our crown jewel of all our parks just opened this year - Bill Noble Park is a community park designed to meet the needs of all ages. We invested $32 million to build the nicest park in the state of Alabama that is a half mile off of I-65. The park consists of 9 baseball or softball fields and a football/soccer field (all synthetic turf), 2 concession stands, a huge playground with pavilions, 8 tennis courts, 11 pickleball courts, an event center and even a putting green. During the week, Bill Noble Park is designed to meet the needs and expectations of the local community. Then, on the weekends it serves as an economic development engine attracting sports teams from across the Southeast which helps all of our local businesses.
Everything that I have mentioned above would not be possible without the cooperation and teamwork of our city employees and city council. This team of approximately 200 is here for one reason and that is to serve the residents and visitors of our community. I hope you check us out on your own and just see for yourself that Gardendale, truly, is a great place to live, work and play.
In closing, it’s an honor to serve as the Mayor of our great city. If I, or any member of our team can help you in any way, please feel free to reach out to us. As I’ve said many times before, “Greater Things Are Yet to Come in this City!”
Mayor Stan Hogeland

City of Opportunity
BY KIM CRIPPS
Nestled just north of Birmingham, AL, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Gardendale is a charming city with excellent schools and a thriving economy. The city boasts a population of around 16,000, large enough to meet new people yet small enough to foster a close-knit community. And Gardendale is a community committed to enriching the lives of all those who call the city home.
While its roots may be in farming and coal mining, today, the city boasts above-average educational opportunities and medical prowess. Its proximity to downtown Birmingham and the growing real estate market makes it an attractive place for professionals who commute daily to the Magic City.
Resident Danielle Scucchi moved to Gardendale in 2008. Her family enjoys the proximity to downtown and appreciates that traffic is lighter than on other parts of I-65. Their family also enjoys the city’s various parks and playgrounds and “loves the different events the city puts
on throughout the year.”
Aside from the daily commute, many residents say there is not much of a reason to leave!
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Volunteer opportunities abound for individuals of all ages, providing the chance to form meaningful connections with neighbors and community members. From parentteacher associations to the Chamber’s Junior Ambassador program to multiple non-profits, residents are generous with their time and dedicated to making a difference.
ECONOMIC ADVANTAGES
Gardendale’s economy continues to experience growth. This thriving economy helps current residents and newcomers feel secure in calling this city home. And with home options available for renters and buyers, plus residential real estate sales that have increased by 12% in

the last five years, growing in Gardendale is accessible for all types of budgets.
More than 400 businesses help support the city’s economy through dining, shopping, and lifestyle options. Residents do not have to travel far to find what they are looking for.
EDUCATION
Gardendale’s schools are a pillar of togetherness in the community. The city has four public schools and one elementary school in the neighboring Mt. Olive community that consistently receive top ranks in the Jefferson County School system. Meanwhile, the high school athletic teams and theater department bring community members together to support the Rockets on the field and on the stage. Gardendale is also proud to have two Christian schools where students actively learn about their faith as part of the standard curriculum.
FAMILY
Growing families enjoy Gardendale’s location, sense of community, and excellent schools – which is why more than 80% of the city’s residents are married couples with children. Located just a few miles north of Birmingham, commutes can be achieved in less than 20 minutes, making it easy to get home for afterschool activities and evening meals around the table.
FAITH
Gardendale is home to more than 25 churches within a threemile radius of downtown. Baptists, Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Nazarenes, Presbyterians, and non-denominational Christians can practice their faith close to home.
HEALTHY LIVING
Gardendale is honored to be home to an outstanding UAB Medical Campus, including an emergency room center. Many health and wellness services are conveniently located along the Medical Mile, including Brookwood Baptist Health, Grandview Medical Group, Ascension St. Vincent’s, and UAB Medicine. Doctors, nurses, and staff work daily to ensure patients from near and far receive top-notch, quality care. Residents can also support a healthy lifestyle by taking advantage of Gardendale’s parks, walking trails, fitness centers, and recreational sports teams.

Gardendale Parks
BY STEPHANIE GIBSON LEPORE
Gardendale offers residents plenty of space to gather and play, with three large main parks and a couple of smaller ones perfect for families and children. The parks are strategically placed around the community, and most are within walking distance of Gardendale’s larger subdivisions. The city’s wellmaintained facilities—helmed by director Dale Hyche and maintenance supervisors Greg Hughes and Chris Lorino—are a point of pride for Mayor Stan Hogeland.
“I took a part-time job with the city, within the parks and recreation department, when I was 14, and then a full-time job at age 18,” says Mayor Hogeland, who went on to become Gardendale’s parks and rec
director for many years. “As the city grew, I grew into the role, and I stayed there 35 years. It was my dream job.” He notes the importance of the parks as a gathering spot for the community, as well as a safe place for youth to hang out and an economic boom to the city through sports tournaments.
BILL NOBLE PARK
This was definitely the thought behind Gardendale’s Bill Noble Park—named after former mayor (19721996) Bill Noble—which reopened this spring after a $32 million redevelopment. The complex is home to Gardendale’s youth baseball, softball, football, tennis

and pickleball programs, as well as the Parks Maintenance and Parks and Recreation offices.
Featuring a regulation-size football/soccer field, eight tennis courts, nine ball fields that are adaptable for baseball or softball, and 11 pickle ball courts—all with synthetic turf—as well as a beach volleyball court, outdoor basketball courts, a putting green, two concession stands, a playground, and an events center. “There’s something for everybody, boys, girls, and adults, of all ages,” says Mayor Hogeland.
He notes that, during the week, Bill Noble Park is a “community park based on community needs. For years, I had people coming to me because, for 50 years, the boys played at Bill Noble and the girls played at Luman Harris, another of our parks in town, thus splitting up the family unit [when siblings played at different parks].” The dream—now realized—was to have one park where both boys and girls could play their games.
“On weekends, the intent is to flip the switch and turn [the park] into an economic development machine by attracting travel ball teams from all over the southeast for tournament,” says Mayor Hogeland. In 2023, the park will host 40 tournaments. “It’s a very busy place.” As travel ball continues to sweep the country, the city sees the opportunity for Bill Noble Park to put Gardendale on the map as a premier place to go [for tournaments].
Moreover, notes the mayor, “we wanted a place where we could welcome teenagers who needed a place to hang out at night and on the weekends. Now, parent after parent says their teens live at the park. It’s a safe environment, close to home, and they can have a good time.” Of course, a facility of this size takes a lot of upkeep, and he notes that the city didn’t have the staff to efficiently run a park of Bill Noble’s magnitude. To solve that problem and keep Bill Noble in excellent condition for
the community, the city engaged the help of Sports Facilities Companies (SFC), which also manages the Hoover Met, as well as many other large parks across the country. “Our staff works with SFC to create the environment we’re seeking,” says Mayor Hogeland. “It’s just a great spot for families to go.”
CLEMONS COMPLEX
Mayor Hogeland says Clemons Complex (named after former Mayor Kenny Clemons, 1996-2008) is nearing completion of a $3 million update project that was started many years ago. Located off one of Gardendale’s main thoroughfares, Fieldstown Road, the Clemons Complex has soccer and flag football fields, a dog park, disc golf course, Boy Scout hut, batting cages, a walking track, and the Gardendale Urban Trail System (GUTS) for mountain biking. A playground, Celebration Park, was added in 2007, and in 2008 the Splash Pad opened, a popular attraction for residents. The complex hosts both the Gardendale youth and

adult soccer programs, the youth flag football program, and numerous disc golf tournaments. Fun fact: The park is a participant in the America in Bloom program and has been recognized for its beautification initiatives, including planting close to 2,500 crape myrtles.
LUMAN HARRIS PARK
Located off Pineywood Road, Luman Harris Park is named for the Gardendale native and former Atlanta Braves manager. Conveniently located south of Tarrant Road and just a mile north of Highway 31, the park includes softball fields and the shaded Raymond G. Doss Playground of Miracles, which is handicapped-accessible and perfect for families to enjoy on the weekends.
MINI PARK
A “pocket park” according to Mayor Hogeland, the Mini Park, is located off Tarrant Road on Keith Circle and offers a quiet, shaded playground and basketball court.
BEATRICE JOHNSON PARK
Located on New Castle Road, this park includes a pavilion, picnic tables, and grills, along with a handicappedaccessible playground designed for children ages 5-12.
GARDENDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PLAYGROUND
Like other schools in the county, Gardendale Elementary School was in desperate need of a new playground; however, funding was not available for it. The City of Gardendale stepped in and met this need by funding a new playground for GES. According to the North Jefferson Post, “The whole playground was redesigned with bright colors, quality gym equipment that meets all safety standards, and enough playscape to provide calisthenics for all ages.” During school hours it is in constant use, but on nights and weekends, it becomes a public playground where families can go and spend the day.

Gardendale Schools
BY STEPHANIE GIBSON LEPORE
The public schools in Gardendale consistently rank at the top of the Jefferson County School System in academics. The city enjoys better-than-average community and parent involvement in the public schools. Each public school includes an active PTA, with thousands of combined volunteer hours logged each semester. The city boasts two elementary schools and a nearby elementary school in the Mt. Olive community, one middle school, one high school, two private schools, and two community colleges within an hour’s drive.
instruction, responsible resource management, and meaningful community and family collaboration focused on student success. To honor these values, the school operates on SNOW Expectations:

Students visit the learning library once a week as a class, where they practice research skills and participate in STEM challenges. The school’s Honor Choir and Drum Corp perform throughout Gardendale and at school events. school is home to about 330 students in K-5th grade. The “bestkept secret” in Jefferson County according to parents, Mount Olive Elementary was named the county’s i-Ready Super School for reading and math this past spring. Students attend school events like Kindness Matters assemblies and take field trips to places such as Birmingham Southern Environmental Center and the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center.
GARDENDALE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
One of two private schools in the community, Gardendale Christian Academy provides quality education in a spiritual environment for K-5th grade. The school’s mascot is the knight, chosen to represent the qualities of a developing Christian faith. GCA is affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene, and all religious classes, devotionals, and services are intended to equip students with basic Bible knowledge. Students attend weekly chapel, take Bible class, and participate in Christmas and end-of-year plays.
BRAGG MIDDLE SCHOOL
Bragg Middle School endeavors to prepare responsible, educated students to adapt and be successful by providing a creative, meaningful curriculum implemented by an innovative staff in an environment conducive to learning. Originally a junior high, in 1996, faculty and administration embraced the concept of middle school, and the school was renamed Roy F. Bragg Middle School. The addition of 12 classrooms in spring 2002 changed the school’s configuration to a 6th-8th grade setup. Today, Bragg employs a teaching team approach, with two teams per grade level and a 25:1 student/teacher ratio. Bragg offers a variety of extracurricular activities in fine arts, athletics, academic clubs, and student government.
GARDENDALE HIGH SCHOOL
Gardendale High School enrolls 1,062 students from the city, as well as from the surrounding communities of Mount Olive, Brookside, and North Smithfield. The school is accredited by the Southern Regional Education Board. GHS’s mission is to create an environment where learning is a priority for all. The school offers 11 AP courses, as well as other courses available through ACCESS Distance Learning Courses, and honors classes. GHS also offers students career and technical classes in Welding, Automotive Services and Collision Repair, Computer Science, Business Management, Food and Nutrition, Sports Medicine, Cosmetology, Advertising Design, and Engineering and Architectural Design.
TABERNACLE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
A ministry of Gardendale Baptist Tabernacle, Tabernacle Christian School is a K3-12th grade institution that provides an excellent education combined with a Biblical worldview. The school is a member of the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS), a national conference that affords many opportunities in fine arts and academic competitions, honor society, and teacher conventions. In addition to academics, the school’s Tabernacle Torches teams participate in such sports as archery, baseball, football, and more.
COMMUNITY COLLEGES
Though not located in Gardendale, both Wallace State and Jefferson State Community Colleges are within an hour’s drive and offer myriad degree options. In nearby Hanceville, Wallace State is designated as a military-friendly college, was the 2020 winner of the Innovation of the Year Award, named the safest college campus in Alabama in 2019, and was ranked among the top community colleges in the U.S. by the Aspen Institute three times in the last five years. In the Center Point/Pinson area, Jefferson State’s main campus serves more than 9,000 students. The school, which has affiliate campuses in Chilton, St. Clair, and Shelby Counties as well, offers degrees in 9 different fields, including liberal arts and sciences, general studies and humanities, health professions, and business, management, marketing, and related support services.

WORSHIP Gardendale Churches
BY STEPHANIE GIBSON LEPORE
The five functions of community churches are to worship, teach, fellowship, evangelize, and serve. With more than 25 houses of worship within a three-mile radius of downtown Gardendale, residents have ample opportunity to engage in all five and plenty of choices when it comes to finding a church to attend close to home. Our local churches help to support both congregants and the city, and there is no shortage of options from which to choose for Gardendale-area residents. From Baptist to Assembly of God and Catholic to Lutheran and Presbyterian, many denominations find their homes here.
Our churches include:
BAPTIST

Business is Growing
BY KIM CRIPPS
Just 20 minutes north of Birmingham, AL, is the growing city of Gardendale. What began as a farming and coal mining community in the 1800s has since transformed into a thriving, business-friendly community.
Today, the city has over 400 corporations, non-profits, restaurants, retail shops, and lifestyle facilities.
“Gardendale has experienced major growth in the last few years. Our city has been intentional about
the growth,” said Heather Lebischak, Gardendale’s Chamber of Commerce executive director.
Lebischak shared that while Gardendale has a lot of businesses in the area, they were not visible from the interstate. The city obtained permission from the Alabama Department of Transportation to lower the bank that blocked the view of Gardendale from the interstate. “This improvement makes it possible for travelers and potential customers to see what

Gardendale offers – and to stop here for a meal or shopping.”
And as Gardendale’s population and visibility continue to increase, it spells good news for businesses that depend on revenue from locals and tourists alike. This mutually beneficial relationship helps strengthen the economic and social well-being of the entire community, making it possible for everyone to thrive.
FROM CHILE TO GARDENDALE
Ariel Parra, a metallurgical engineer from Chile, owns and operates Monita’s Bakery, Gardendale’s 2022 Business of the Year. An engineering job transfer brought him and his family from Latin America to Alabama, where they chose to settle in Gardendale, “a place we truly love,” he said.
But, when Parra and his family arrived in the United States, they missed the cake flavors they were accustomed to back home. “Everything seemed to taste like buttercream, and there wasn’t much variety beyond chocolate or vanilla,” said Parra.
That’s when they decided to take action and introduce their traditional, madefrom-scratch recipes - and mixed with love - to provide their community with different and unique dessert options.
Monita’s Gardendale location has mutually benefited the Parra’s and the community. Locals enjoy customdecorated doughnuts, and the people in Gardendale are incredibly loyal and supportive. Meanwhile, the Parra’s say they like every aspect of running a business in Gardendale and credits the city’s Chamber of Commerce for their success. “The positivity and good spirits of the people who visit us every day, always with a smile and great respect,

are truly delightful, said Parra. “Additionally, the city, particularly through the Chamber of Commerce, supports local businesses like ours. They allow us to expand our community network and expose our small business to a wider audience.”
GROW WITH THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
All businesses have access to the Chamber of Commerce, which works to “create, build, and empower connections to foster growth in our businesses and our community,” said Lebischak.
As chamber members, business owners can meet and network with other business owners in the area and connect with community and city leaders. “We are very visible in the community, attending many events and volunteering at our members’ events,” added Lebischak. “There are a lot of opportunities to form connections, and our members want to support each other.”
This valuable partnership extends beyond chamber-sponsored events, with business owners intentionally shopping and dining with other local businesses to support a friendly, supportive, and thriving business environment.
NEWCOMERS WELCOME

Year-Round Culture
BY KIM CRIPPS
When it comes to business, real estate, and population, Gardendale is growing. Newcomers are realizing what long-time residents have known – this city is a modernday Mayberry. Offering a small-town feel with up-town amenities, it’s no surprise Gardendale has experienced a well-deserved boost to its year-round arts scene.
Looking for a theater performance? It’s here. Classes for art lovers? We have that too. Craft fairs? There are three big ones each year. But perhaps the largest gathering of art buyers, lovers, and creators is found within the booths of the annual Magnolia Festival.
THE MAGNOLIA FESTIVAL
The award-winning Magnolia Festival began in 2002 and is a two-day event with more than 25,000 attendees, says festival director Kathleen Phillips.
Phillips and her team – a cornucopia of volunteers, community groups, city employees and leadership – are careful to include many local businesses and non-profit organizations in the festival. This exposure helps non-profits and businesses gain new supporters and customers while contributing to the city’s economic development.
“We call the Magnolia Festival ‘The Total Family Experience,’” says Phillips. “An event of this size and variety provides quality of life for our citizens. It’s a destination event that keeps folks coming back to Gardendale every year.”
The festival includes art classes for kids, live music, pony rides, a petting zoo, carnival rides, a car show, a Pooch Parade fundraiser, and fresh takes on festival food.

Living magazine, says the Magnolia Festival was featured on the Food Network and Cooking Channel for its carnival eats. Visitors come back year after year looking to experience new and different culinary creations from local food trucks and Gardendale’s restaurant scene.
While the Magnolia Festival promotes tourism, economic development and community involvement, Phillips says her favorite part is the people who attend year after year. “Seeing the excitement on people’s faces and the joy it brings…the festival is like a homecoming for all ages, and I love it.”
The next Magnolia Festival is April 19-20, 2024. Visit MagnoliaFestival.org, follow Magnolia Festival in Gardendale on Facebook, and Magnoliafestival_Gardendale on Instagram for up-to-date information.
THE ARTS IN GARDENDALE
Housed in Gardendale Public Library, The Arts in Gardendale organization celebrates various art forms in the community. Their Facebook page, facebook.com/theartsingardendale, highlights artwork, art classes, craft opportunities, theater performances and creative businesses. The Arts in Gardendale also facilitates its own events and programs to showcase the city’s local artists.
GARDENDALE HIGH SCHOOL THEATER
Gardendale High School Rocket Theater encourages creativity, confidence and artistry for students who shine both on and off stage. Actors hone their craft by learning lines and developing characters. Offstage finds set and costume designers, makeup artists, sound and light operators, stage managers and directors. Together, the members of GHS Rocket Theater bring each show to life.

ARTS AND CRAFTS
Gardendale is home to three significant arts and crafts shows. In October, Merry Market is hosted by the nonprofit Just Keep Smiling. More than 85 vendors sell handcrafted goods each year to help families with critically ill children. From decorated sugar cookies, monogrammed apparel, quilts, handmade toys, and seasonal décor to pop-up shops from local boutiques, shoppers can purchase unique gifts for everyone on their Christmas list.
Gardendale’s North Arts Council hosts its semi-annual arts and crafts shows in November and March. Each show features more than 85 booths of handmade arts and crafts including home décor, jewelry, woodworking, apparel, and homemade eats and treats. The November show brings a variety of items for Christmas, and shoppers enjoy choosing creative gifts for their loved ones. In March, shoppers can find handmade arts and crafts for Easter, spring and summer.
COME TO GARDENDALE FOR ARTISTIC INSPIRATION
From festivals and performances to maker opportunities and craft shows, Gardendale’s doors are always open to locals and visitors looking for a creative experience. Fall kicks off theater performances and two major arts and crafts shows. Spring brings a new theater lineup, another arts and crafts show, and a community-wide festival. Throughout the year, The Arts in Gardendale hosts classes, events and showcases. Gardendale is an artistic city full of creative minds – and there’s always room for more.
