EDITOR’S NOTE

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!

Years ago, I jumped off the resolution bandwagon in exchange for a Word of the Year. The idea was to let one word positively inspire me for the next 12 months without the pressure of keeping—or breaking—a strict resolution.

This year, my word is LIFE. It reminds me of my Catholic faith when Christ says, “I came to so that you may have life and have it more abundantly” in John 10:10. It also reminds me to choose activities that give me life, from connecting with the people behind local businesses to reading encouraging stories that inspire me to be my best self.

Likewise, in this issue, we’re celebrating ways to live our best life right here in Hoover. Our vibrant city is home to several 55+ communities, international cuisine, fashionable boutiques, refreshing day spas and so much more.

Wherever 2025 takes you, we hope it gives you life –and that it’s your best year yet!

Happy Reading,

Ready, Reset, Go!

Exploring 55+ Communities

AS MORE PEOPLE reach the milestone of age 55, an increasing number are seeking neighborhoods designed to cater to their lifestyle, preferences and future needs. These neighborhoods in Hoover are growing more popular than ever.

David Bannister, an almost 30-year resident of Hoover and longtime volunteer for Hoover Athletics and Neighborhood Bridges, moved to one of these neighborhoods when it first opened. It is called Abingdon

by the River and is nestled in the hills surrounding Bumpus Middle School and Hoover High School.

“The whole idea of a 55 and over community appealed to my wife and me, even though we’re both currently 57,” said Bannister. “We’re well below the median age, which I think is around 74. But what I really liked about this community and the idea is that as you’re preparing to retire, you can buy the last house you’ll ever own, and you’ll know exactly where you’re going to be when you do.”

Abingdon was among the first active adult communities in Hoover and was built by Signature Homes. The neighborhood is quiet, surrounded by countless trees and

paths that allow the residents to enjoy the natural world.

Another thing Bannister enjoys about the neighborhood is the amenities it has to offer and the community of people he has met. Abingdon by the River is one of the few flat areas in Hoover that spans over a mile and has become the perfect walking area for him and his wife, Kelly. The neighborhood has a fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, pickleball and other sports courts, and more. His next-door neighbor started a bike club, which meets daily.

“When you go into a 55 and over community, you kind of meet people that want to travel, want to walk,

take their time, want to be involved in extracurricular activities, and have a lot of time to volunteer,” Bannister said.

Other 55+ communities in Hoover include:

ARISE KNOX SQUARE

Arise Knox Square, located in Trace Crossings and a walkable distance to The Village at Brock’s Gap, is a new neighborhood that offers one and two-bedroom apartments and cottages with many different floor plan layouts for those looking to settle into a quieter life. Here, residents can enjoy resort-style amenities and programming. Their amenities include a fitness center, yoga studio, theatre, spa, pool and more.

ABINGDON AT LAKE WILBORN

Abingdon at Lake Wilborn finished construction in 2020, a year before Abingdon by the River. They are located within walking distance of each other. Residents can access 73 acres of bike trails, multiple parks, lodges, shops and a clubhouse.

PRIMROSE AT EVERLEE

Primrose at Everlee is a 55+ community that calls itself a modern, walkable resort town. Built by Signature Homes, the community offers one or two-level homes with easy access to shops, restaurants and entertainment. Amenities include a pool, indoor and outdoor fitness centers, a social lounge, pickleball courts and more.

Bannister said he believes 55+ communities are rising in popularity because they provide a space to connect with people on the same path of life as you. A good number of the residents have grandchildren and are now looking to permanently settle in the home that is right for them both now and in the future.

These communities attract both long-time residents of Hoover and those from other cities far and wide due to their appeal.

Hoover’s got great everything, but you don’t have to be from Hoover to thrive in Hoover.”

Get on Board

Alabama’s First Charcuterie Restaurant

Comes to Greystone

IT’S BEEN A BIG YEAR for Corinne Sweet, owner of the newly opened Board in Birmingham charcuterie restaurant. Previously located in The Shoppes of Melrose in Chelsea, Corinne relocated her catering business to Highway 280 and opened Alabama’s first charcuterie restaurant on December 6, 2024.

Board in Birmingham launched as a catering business in 2022, a perfect fit for Corinne, who says, “Feeding and entertaining people just comes naturally

to me, and it brings me so much joy.”

In her new space, Corinne, who was recently voted Best Caterer by Hoover’s Magazine, cultivates a fun and friendly atmosphere for enjoying a sandwich, salad, dessert, or—what I went in for—a To-Goterie, a catchy phrase she coined her charcuterie boxes that are available for dine-in or carry-out.

for your box from what is available in the glass case before you.

For my small box, I chose one meat, two kinds of cheese, savory nuts, a sweet to round it out, red or green grapes, and a jam or mustard. Then, crackers (which are also available in gluten-free), pickled okra, marinated green olives, tiny red “sweety drops” Peruvian peppers, and a strawberry were carefully placed

boxes and laughter, a couch with a coffee table and a sitting area, and an authentic BellSouth phone booth, to settle at a bar that runs parallel along the restaurant’s back wall, where I was offered a sample of wine slushy they are working to perfect. Note: It tasted pretty perfect to me, just as it was.

It was here, at the bar, that I met Corinne’s mother-in-law, Jacqui, and her sister-in-law, Carrie.

Board in Birmingham offers a fun and friendly atmosphere where family and friends can connect over sandwiches, salads, desserts, drinks, and, of course, charcuterie.

alongside my hand-formed calabrese salami rose, Brie, tomato basil cheese, barbeque almonds, butter toffee almonds, and habanero bacon spread.

After a seamless checkout, my box and I walked through the restaurant, passing cozy blue velvet chairs under wine cork lights, a table of friends catching up over

Jacqui and Carrie shared how they’d done their fair share of cleaning and preparing the space to get ready for the grand opening, both smiling and laughing while they talked. Carrie painted while Jacqui scrubbed baseboards. They excitedly told me I needed to see the bathroom, which is decorated with clever puns and play-on-words. And they made sure I met Corinne’s dad, Ed, his wife, Brinda, and her brother Clint, who were there enjoying their own to-goteries.

It’s things like this – support from family, friends, customers, and 2,000 online followers – that will ensure Board in Birmingham continues to find success in this new chapter, whether in catering, as a restaurant, or as a welcoming gathering space for connection and community.

Take a Culinary Excursion without Leaving Hoover

PHOTOS BY KYLE FOSHEE
First opened in 1991, The Purple Onion serves up local favorites seven days a week
Hima, a team member at The Purple Onion, serves up Mediterranean and American fare at the Hoover location.

IT WAS CHRISTMAS NIGHT, and we had not amply planned what our evening meal would be, so my young family and I naively left the house for dinner.

Still on the holiday high, our spirits were in no mood to falter as we reviewed our list of regular eatery favorites. Surely, there would be no cause for concern.

“They may close early,” I thought, “but not this early.”

No one was open.

I slowly spiraled into a state of despair that only those who think through their stomachs more than their heads will ever fully understand, and hope was fleeting. We were on the verge of abandoning our quest, resorting to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and possibly settling our heads to rest with watery eyes and broken dreams.

But as we cruised along a bare Montgomery Highway in Hoover, through the tunnels of merry and sparkling decor, there it was…

eighteen. Not long after, he opened the first Purple Onion in downtown Birmingham and has since grown to six locations around the area.

Nestled in between the typically dependable late-night options of McDonalds and Taco Bell, stood The Purple Onion in all its glory. The Open neon sign, shining proudly from beneath the outdoor awning that was striped evenly in white and purple, was a welcome sight, reflecting beautifully off the darkened windows of the restaurant’s neighboring competitors.

My wife and I had just two young boys at the time, and we were way grumpier than they were, so we happily joined the drive-thru line that was wrapped around the building twice. By the time we arrived back home, we were indeed happy.

Adnan Abusharif migrated to the United States in 1985 at the age of

Mediterranean cuisine is plentiful, but they have also given American favorites a twist, drawing favorable reviews of their burgers from multiple food junkies.

Lorna Road runs behind the Purple Onion and highlights several international restaurants managed by owners with life stories similar to Abusharif’s. Indian, Mexican, Thai and more Mediterranean options edge Lorna’s roadside with a substantial supply of authentic choices.

I am comforted by this string of worldwide unity that lies just around the corner from my front door – and restaurants and owners that you can count on.

Fret not if you were thirty-three before you pronounced gyro correctly. (Hint: It’s year-row, not guy-row). Hoover’s International Corridor forgives, ready to welcome patrons with open arms.

The restaurant is well known for dishes such as kebabs, rice, hummus and pita bread.

Each year, The Finley Awards — named after longtime W.A. Berry High football coach Bob Finley — celebrate character education by honoring one senior from each high school and one Hoover City Schools employee as examples of outstanding character. With Coach Finley, it did not matter whether people were stars or standouts. All students – whether athletes or non-athletes - were important to him. He taught hundreds of young people about integrity, generosity, compassion and perseverance, not only in what he said, but in how he lived. Many of those young people are now well beyond high school - and they are still reaping the incredible benefits of Bob Finley’s character.

Bluff Park Tour

THE INAUGURAL BLUFF PARK TOUR OF HOMES was held on Saturday, December 7, 2024. Matthew Allen (coowner of Enjoy Hoover magazine), Geni Bomar, Kimberly Fain, and Ginny Fowler orchestrated the event, which featured four area homes, including a historic landmark, a mid-century modern, a restored craftsman, and breathtaking views of the bluff.

Allen said events like this add to the close ties between people who live in Bluff Park. “It has a very tight community feel, and on the heels of successful community events like the Christmas parade, Whiffle on the Bluff, Bluff Park 8K, High Country 5K, Bluff Park

Proceeds from the Bluff Park Tour of Homes benefited Neverthirst, a Birmingham-based nonprofit. Neverthirst is committed to bringing clean water and the Gospel to people in places like Cambodia, India, Nepal, Chad, Niger, and Ethiopia.

Allen wants this event to turn into an annual tradition. “We’ll start planning for the 2025 event in the spring, and people can be looking for announcements in Enjoy Hoover and the Bluff Park Neighborhood Reader for more on how to help,” he added.

The Pink Tulip Boutique

Where Compliments Come From

in a range of styles, reflecting the tastes of women in all generations.

The Pink Tulip offers clothing

THE PINK TULIP, a locally owned and well-loved boutique for women, opened a new storefront in Hoover at The Grove in Oct. 2024. Originally founded in 1986, The Pink Tulip’s mission has always been to build confidence in women through their clothing choices.

Letty and Hadley Algren, a mother and daughter, run both Pink Tulip storefronts in Hoover and Homewood. The mother, Letty, founded the store because she was inspired by her own mother’s selflessness. After working as a buyer at a department store, she decided she wanted to create her own space where women could come first.

To her, the boutique is a way to connect with women of all ages in the area and help them find clothing they feel good in. To Letty, Birmingham feels small despite its large size because of the community here.

Hadley, her daughter, majored in fashion retailing at The University of Alabama. Once she graduated, she knew The Pink Tulip was where she belonged. She brought many new ideas and a fresh perspective to the boutique and was able to market the store in a new way through social media.

She and her mother worked hard to create a website and an app to allow customers to browse and buy at home, which they still update as often as possible.

The website allows you to filter through what you wish to see, which makes it easy to shop from home. On the website, visitors can click through tabs such as “Bestsellers,” “Teacher Approved,” and “Under $50.”

The duo knows shopping can be a stressful endeavor, and that is why they took care to hire encouraging and attentive staff members. Upon walking through the door, you will undoubtedly be greeted by sharply dressed women with warm smiles.

The Pink Tulip offers clothing in a range of styles, reflecting the tastes of women in all generations. Letty and Hadley try on every single item of clothing before they put it up for sale to ensure their customers can be happy with their selections. If their customers get complimented in their clothing, then they are doing something right.

The clothing in their store is classy yet fun, and their storefronts reflect that. Seasonal decorations and sweet scents of perfume fill the room, and the clothing is color-coded for an eyeappealing experience.

The pair have settled into a routine after almost 10 years of working together and have learned to divide their duties into the things they are each best at. They had to learn to rely on each other beyond being family and now have a much deeper understanding of each other and their goals.

Our ultimate goal is for our customers to get compliments when they wear our clothing.”

New Year, Even Better You!

Let a Spa Day Bring Out Your Best

RING IN THE NEW YEAR by treating yourself to a Spa Day! Hoover residents have several choices, two of which are Birch Tree Day Spa and Spa Hoover.

Birch Tree Day Spa moved to its new location at Bluff Park on Sept.4, 2024, from its previous location at Ross Bridge. Owner and manager Dawn Diehl described the new location as small, quaint and beautiful.

“In January, we always encourage people who have never purchased skincare to take that first step,” Diehl said.

Birch Tree’s Service of the Month in January will be a full-body exfoliation featuring sea salt and dry brushing at a discounted rate of $100 (normally $135).

Beginning February 1 through Valentine’s Day, Birch Tree will be offering 20 percent off $100 gift cards. This is also the start of wax season, with Brazilian waxes 20 percent off.

And don’t think a spa trip is just for the under-30 crowd. Today’s spas offer increasingly popular services for both middle-aged women and seniors.

“Micro-needling is another procedure that is helpful for women

in their 40s, as the body starts to lose collagen and estrogen, and the skin loses some of its elasticity,” Diehl said.

Birch Tree also just rolled out a new

facial specifically for pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women that helps with lymphatic drainage.

“Many doctors don’t understand how menopause affects a woman’s skin, so that’s where we come in,” Diehl said.

Birch Tree Day Spa is located at 801 Shades Crest Road, Unit C, in Bluff Park. For more information or to make an appointment, call 205-989-0001 or visit www.birchtreedayspa.net.

Spa Hoover prides itself on being “small but service-oriented.”

Manager Stacy Cole says she knows most clients by name.

Stacy Cole, manager of Spa Hoover on Highway 31, describes it as small but very service-oriented. “We know most of our clients here by name,” she said.

Middle-aged clients opt for the HydroGlow hydro dermabrasion treatment, which uses specialized serums to exfoliate, extract and infuse sections of the skin. “It’s probably our best facial treatment for women over 40,” Cole said.

If you’re short on time, Cole said, dermaplaning is the quickest facial treatment that brings many rewards.

“Your face will be as smooth as a baby’s bottom,” Cole said. “It removes dead skin and hair. It’s a myth that it

makes the hair grow back faster. It does not.”

Spa Hoover is offering several New Year packages. “We have a New Year facial where we’re adding a special enzyme to make it more elevated than a regular facial,” Cole said. “It treats the effect winter has on the skin.”

Beginning in February, Spa Hoover will be offering Valentine’s Day packages for the perfect gift.

“Our most popular are the facial and massage therapy packages; we have lots of men who come in and aren’t sure what to get for their wives or partners, and this is what we recommend,” Cole said.

Spa Hoover is located at 1717 Montgomery Highway, Suite 101, inside Merle Norman Cosmetics. For more information or to book an appointment, call 205-987-8244 or visit www.spahoover.com.

Meet DeWayne Brown, Hoover High School’s Standout Student Athlete

DEWAYNE C. BROWN, II, a senior at Hoover High School, has made a name for himself with the Hoover Basketball team and back-to-back 7A State Champions for 2023-2024. His achievements include being named an al.com All-Birmingham Team Player of the Year, a 2024 USA National Team Finalist, and an ESPN Top 100 basketball player in the 2025 Class.

He’s the son of April Dickerson, who he says is his “biggest supporter and hero.” His sister, Madison Brown, is a senior at Alabama A&M University. He has two dogs, Gizmo and Milo.

We sat down with DeWayne to talk basketball, his senior year, and his commitment to the University of Tennessee.

Enjoy Hoover: How old were you when you started playing basketball?

DeWayne Brown: I started playing basketball at four years old. I’ve always been tall, and my mom thought it was a good idea to get me involved in sports.

EH: When did you join the Hoover High School team, and what has that been like?

DB: I came to Hoover in 9th grade, and honestly, it was the best decision for me. We truly support and care about each other.

EH: What are you most proud of?

DB: I’m proud that God has placed me around some amazing people my entire life. I’m proud of how I’ve grown as a person and learned to trust the process. I’m proud of my development as a basketball player.

EH: What are your favorite subjects in school? Favorite hobbies?

DB: My favorite subject is definitely math—I’ve always liked it ever since I was a kid. My favorite hobbies are playing video games, working at basketball camps and training kids.

EH: You were recently named Mr. Hoover by your classmates. That’s a big honor! Tell us about that.

DB: It means a lot to me that my classmates and administrators see me as someone who can represent Hoover and be a good role model. I am grateful for this honor.

EH: What does the UT basketball scholarship mean to you?

DB: My journey was not easy. I experienced growth spurts when I was in the 5th grade, which caused me to have a difficult knee surgery. I weighed 300 lbs. because I was not really mobile. I had to have rehab to walk again and then ease my way back to playing basketball. It was a difficult time, but I was determined, and my family supported and motivated me. So, working my way back from this and having the chance to earn a basketball scholarship from Tennessee means everything to me and my family.

EH: Are you involved in any community activities or organizations?

DB: I am a Peer Helper for Hoover High School. Currently I attend church at The Worship Center and Rock City. I really love both churches.

EH: What advice do you have for students who want to try out for a sports team?

DB: The advice that I have for anyone is to believe in yourself and work hard at your goals. If you can find your confidence, you can be unstoppable.
