EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to the inaugural issue of Enjoy Hoover, a bi-monthly magazine shining the spotlight on Hoover’s dining, entertainment, and shopping experiences. What an exciting July and August we have in store for Hoover. We welcome visitors from around the world as Hoover hosts softball for the World Games 2022 at The Hoover Met. To quote Hoover mayor Frank Bracato: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase Hoover and all the things we love most about our city.” EnjoyHoover.com was launched in 2020 by David Cohen, owner of The Whole Scoop Ice Cream Shop and founder of the Hoover Restaurant Alliance. The site was created to help Hoover’s small businesses as they worked their way through the pandemic and the struggles that came with it. This year, David had the vision to revamp the site and launch a complementary magazine. He partnered with Hoover resident and local magazine publisher Matthew Allen and marketing expert Mitzi Eaker (that’s me) to make it happen. EnjoyHoover was re-launched in May of this year during the week of the SEC Baseball Tournament. We officially relaunched EnjoyHoover.com in June, to coincide with the SEC Tournament. At the same time, Matthew (who is also a woodworker) built an oversized blue adirondack chair, and it made its first appearance at the SEC Baseball Tournament’s FanFest. The “Big Blue Chair,” as it became known, was a popular photo spot for both residents and visitors. The chair lives permanently outside The Whole Scoop, and it will make appearances at events in Hoover year-round. When you see it, take a seat and snap a selfie, and share it with the hashtag #EnjoyHoover, for a chance to have your photo displayed in a future magazine. In July, the third annual Hoover Restaurant Week returns, and it will be a special “World Games Edition.” This special week highlights both our delicious local restaurants and the people behind the counter that make dining in Hoover special. You’re encouraged to “Meet, Compete, and Eat in Hoover” July 7-17. Find all the details on participating restaurants and more at HooverRestaurantweek.com. What pairs with food better than football? Hoover is home to some of the best high school football in Alabama! Read about the Hoover Bucs and Spain Park Jaguars as both enter new eras with new head coaches. big revenue boost for local businesses, with the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium hosting the Games’ softball competition. The Hoover Met, host of the annual SEC baseball tournament, holds up to 10,800 fans and is also where Hoover High School’s home football games are played. Tickets are available for the World Softball Competition at https:// am.ticketmaster.com/twg2022/hoovermet. Tynette Lynch, the newly appointed Director of Hospitality and Tourism for the City of Hoover, is especially looking forward to the World Games. “We are excited to welcome the world to Hoover, Alabama, and hope that everyone has an experience to remember.” Erin Colbaugh, who started out as events coordinator for the city in 2006, now serves as director of Parks and Recreation. She has worked for national events including the U.S. Olympic Committee and plans to help make the World Games experience first-rate for both Hoover residents and visitors. “We are excited the Hoover Met was chosen as the host site for the softball competition for the World Games 2022,” she said. “This is a fabulous opportunity to welcome international visitors to Hoover and showcase our city. The games will also appeal to the local crowd as two Alabama stars, Haylie McCleney and Montana Fouts, will be competing for Team USA. We encourage fans to get their tickets now. You won’t want to miss this special event!” Coinciding with this landmark event, Hoover will also be celebrating the variety of options offered by its over 200 restaurants with the third annual Hoover Restaurant Week. This year’s event, branded the “World Games Edition,” will see participating restaurants offer specials, many of them featuring fan favorites or recommended menu selections. Hoover, Spain Park enter new eras with coaching hires BY CARMEN BROWN Hoover and Spain Park have always been fierce rivals, and the rivalry heats up even more this year with two new head coaches: Tim Vakakes at Spain Park, and Wade Waldrop at Hoover. TIM VAKAKES: TREAT THEM RIGHT
Tim Vakakes, the new head coach for Spain Park High School, has one simple rule he lives by when it comes to leading his players: treat them right. “I don’t think kids like inconsistency. We have a sign up in the hallway that says they have one option about how they can work and show up every day. There’s no other choice. “The program starts in the weight room,” he said. “When they keep getting stronger, they know they did it themselves, no one else. Everything we do begins in the weight room.” Vakakes comes to Spain Park after nine seasons at Jackson-Olin High School in Birmingham, where he led what had previously been a declining program to the state playoffs three times. “We had four All-Americans at Jackson-Olin, but they were treated all the same way, regardless of whatever natural talents or gifts they had,” he said. “You want to keep them humble. When you treat them differently, it can cause animosity.” Spring practice for the Jaguars began on Tuesday, May 31. Vakakes said his transition to Spain Park has been going very well. “I wouldn’t trade this coaching staff for any other one. They’re outstanding.” Vakakes said he leads the team with a five-minute devotional about being a man, leadership, humility and hard work. “In 20 years, they’re going to look back and know they were treated right,” he said. “That is the most important thing we can do for our players.” The Jaguars’ season kicks off August 19 against Calera. WADE WALDROP: BUILD AND GROW Having played for the UAB Blazers from 1994 to 1998, Wade Waldrop said he is excited to be back in the Birmingham area, having spent last year at Florence High School and the previous eight seasons at James Clemens High School in Madison. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for this program. If you’re fortunate enough to be chosen to lead here, it’s a blessing.” He’s using his experience at Clemens, a program he had to help build from the ground up, to foster even more growth at Hoover. Waldrop, who was named Class 7A Football Coach of the Year in 2019, said forming relationships with the players, coaches, parents and community will be his focus. “There are so many things with this program that are already good, so it’s taking those strengths and continuing to improve areas of growth that will make us successful. “We want to do our best every day. We want to make sure we do what’s best for our kids and make sure we have people who do what’s best for our kids.” Hoover is set to play Auburn High School in its opening game in Montgomery on August 19. “We’re excited. It will be a really good challenge for us.” Tickets for both Hoover and Spain Park can be purchased at gofan.co.

young families, Hoover Met Complex visitors, and many more. Owner David Cohen comes from a long career in hospitality, having worked for many top name hotel lines in food and beverage management, including Hilton, Westin, Embassy Suites and Hoover’s very own Hyatt Regency Birmingham - The Wynfrey Hotel. Cohen was an adjunct professor at Jefferson State Community College in their Culinary and Hospitality Institute, where he teaches new student orientation and a dining service class. David is a visionary leader, helping lead the creation of Hoover Restaurant Week, the Hoover Restaurant Alliance, the Taste of Hoover, and EnjoyHoover.com. David and his wife Sue opened The Whole Scoop as a family business with the motto, “Ice cream, the way it’s supposed to be,” with a friendly face and good Southern hospitality. They serve 44 flavors of handdipped ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes, malts, and custom-made ice cream cakes. Their whole ice cream cakes are favorites for parties and holiday gatherings, but individual cake slices are sold, too. Customer favorites include salted caramel, krazy kookie dough, butter pecan, cookies and cream, better brownie batter, and Butterfinger. And, did we mention their waffle cones? They’re hand-made in the store and hand dipped in chocolate or rolled in sprinkles or your favorite nuts. These cones are as festive as they are delicious. The Whole Scoop atmosphere is fun and laid back with a wall covered with photos of customers enjoying ice cream along with hundreds of visitor-signed wooden ice cream spoons. The Whole Scoop is a mainstay on local “best of ” contests. Recently, they won Hoover’s Magazine’s “Hoover’s Best”
award for Best Sweet Treats and Best Milkshake. As much as the team appreciates the recognition from their customers, they really get excited about giving back to their community. The Whole Scoop hosts Spirit Nights throughout the year to support local charities, schools, and sports teams. David gives a percentage of the profits to the host organization or team. They have given back more than $10,000 to community groups over the last 11 years. The shop is a popular destination for many people, but David likes to take his shop on the road as well. His mobile ice cream stand makes appearances at teacher appreciation days at local schools, local youth sporting events, Hoover Met events, birthday parties, city events and special occasions. You can plan your visit to The Whole Scoop at 1021 Brock’s Gap Parkway. They’re open during the summer from noon-10pm, Monday-Saturday, and 1-10pm on Sunday. Call them at (205) 444-8000 to place a special order or reserve the ice cream stand for your next big event. Enjoy Hoover July/August 2022 17

General Manager Neil Buffington, who moved to Birmingham from Richmond, Va., in October of last year, said people from all over are familiar with the Galleria and the hotel, which were both constructed in 1986. “I went to Missouri State University, and even back then I knew it was iconic,” Buffington said. “Once when I was in college, I made it a point to stop here on the way to Panama City and check it out.” Due to the room-to-space ratio and central location (close to the intersection of I-459 and I-65), the Wynfrey, as it was known for many years before being rebranded as a Hyatt Regency in 2013, has long been a destination for hosting weddings, conferences, CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

and meetings for organizations from all over the South, but over the last few years it has also become a hot spot for youth sports teams, with the Wynfrey not being far from the Hoover Metropolitan Complex. The hotel underwent a multi-million dollar restoration in 2021 in all 331 guest rooms, including new carpeting, bathrooms that include a walk-in shower (in 75 percent of the rooms) and a clock that is built into a mirror. “We upgraded our Internet service last year,” Buffington said. “There’s not much tech-wise we can’t do.” Paul Dangel, director of sales and marketing and who is very active in many Hoover organizations, said the hotel’s connection to the Riverchase Galleria with venues like Dave & Buster’s and BumperNets makes it a great lodging option for food and shopping. Buffington and Dangel said the dozens of team members, including long-time Director of Events Jeanna McNair, make sure the Wynfrey remains the premier full-service hotel it was designed to be. “We also have team members like Paul Matthews, who doesn’t forget a name or a drink. He remembers guests from back in 1993. Even people here in town remember Paul and ask if he’s still here.” “The Wynfrey’s customer service is a step above,” Dangel said, “with guests receiving the best product and experience they can get. Every team member has a pledge card, and every customer gets a survey. We track our scores and make sure we’re ranking at the top. We take it very seriously and discuss it every morning in our meetings. Future plans are to keep growing, keep our team and inventory running, manage and continue to manage.” “What differentiates us is our service and how it’s provided, “ Dangel said. “We have planners that come to the hotel from all over to experience best in class events.”

BumperNets and its legacy of fun BY BEN WALKER One of the most fascinating gems of Hoover can be found occupying a large section of the Riverchase Galleria—a landmark of the city of Hoover. In August of 1999, BumperNets became the very first table tennis store in America. This magical place, filled with so many memories, is owned by the winner of the August 1999 Ping Pong singles, doubles, and mixed doubles—Homer Brown. His dream of making table sports available for everyone in a space

that would facilitate both the use and the purchase of equipment became a reality through BumperNets. Although BumperNets began in Brookwood Mall in nearby Homewood, in March of 2001 the store moved to Hoover’s Riverchase Galleria, becoming an immediate favorite for shoppers and enthusiasts. This unique table sport venue boasts a 5.0 star customer rating, has been featured on local TV and radio, and occupies several first floor store units on CONTINUED ON PAGE 25

one side of the former Sears entrance. Whether it is purchasing a rare cue stick, restocking on ping pong balls, or finding your game room’s perfect dart board setup, Homer’s crew will provide all of the needed products, product knowledge, and advice. One of the key distinctive characteristics of BumperNets is the opportunity to try-before-using, purchase, install, AND receive expert advice all from the same source. Customers have been known to travel from as far
as 4 hours away and even farther for the local handson experience and the arcade nostalgia. If you are looking for all things arcade, air hockey, table tennis, foosball, and billiards, you will have your dreams fulfilled at BumperNets. BumperNets hosts various ping pong tournaments throughout the week, allowing players of a wide range of skill levels to enjoy the friendly mix of fun and challenge. Whether it is a corporate fun day, a birthday party, or just you and your family, everyone will enjoy the adrenaline-pumping excitement offered there. Wrapsody is a locally-owned company that was started in 2004 by Sarah Brown and Terry Shea. They partnered together to build Wrapsody out of a dream that they shared with one another on a girls’ lunch date. They both wanted to bring to Hoover the same kind of homestyle store they remembered from their childhoods. So they gathered help from friends to paint, create, and support the unique gift shop. The store grew quickly with a second location in Auburn, and now there are three locations, with the third opening in Trussville in 2020. The Hoover store is located in the new and hip Stadium Trace Village, one of the first storefronts you’ll see when driving into the development. to Christie Howell, a former employee who has led a rebranding and the opening of the Trussville location. But where does the name “Wrapsody” come from? Well, the boutique is specifically named because of the free wrapping service that they provide. The title is a play on words deriving from the word “rhapsody” meaning enthusiasm, bliss, and joy. Buying a gift for someone else is intentional, and the Wrapsody staff wants to help you share that feeling with them. The store brightens your mood with a variety of colors: blue, pink, purple, yellow, green, and all the most popular color palettes. You are welcomed by a cheery voice and a warm smile from one of the employees who is ready to help you find anything you might need. They care about their customers and seek to customize your experience to best suit you. The “Wrappettes,” as staff members are known, even know many customers by name, personalizing and building a relationship with their customers. Your experience is maximized and leaves you wanting to return. Visit Wrapsody at Stadium Trace Village and find gifts for that special friend family member. They are open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday-Saturday from 10am-4pm and Wednesday from 10am-6pm. They’re closed on Sundays, but you can shop 24/7 at www.wrapsodyonline.com.
