Growing up in the South, I’ve always been a football fan, but there is a special magic to me when it comes to high school football. These young men and coaches train and practice and then leave everything they have on the field every Friday night. But, Friday night football is more than just the game–it’s the unity of the community, the dedication of the cheerleaders, band members and those traditions we hold so dear here. We caught up with Coach Chad Eads and some of his young players to see what we should expect as the season kicks off later this month.
We also touched base with a new business owner, Nate Prisoc, of the Tombrello Collective and got a sneak peek of all the gorgeous, unique home furnishings he has to offer. If you are someone who doesn’t like having the same things everyone else has, you need to stop by his store.
I also stopped by to chat with Tom Akers at The Scalded Dawg in the Advance Auto Parts parking lot and his outlook, attitude and story are sure to make you smile. How many of us have that “one day I’ll quit my job and do…” statement in our head, but never get around to it?
As always, you’ll also see a lot of faces at Gardendale events, quite a few ribbon cutting events and more about the happenings in our area. It’s hard to believe Summer is almost over, but as the kids go back to school, let’s all say a prayer this year will be one of health, wisdom and safety for them.

“Football takes a young man and teaches him how to work hard when he doesn’t feel like it, show up when his body is tired, and work hard because somebody else needs him to.”
Coach Chad Eads
Hard work is something Gardendale’s Athletic Director and Head Varsity Football Coach Chad Eads has been teaching young men for the last 27 years through the game of football. Since joining 6A Gardendale High School in 2018, Eads has seen the high school football landscape change, but the goals of building a team remain the same entering the 2024-2025 season.
Senior offensive lineman Rhett Fitzpatrick and senior
defensive back Joshua Malone agree that setting the tone early is important as the season kicks off against James Clemens this August.
“Setting the tone is leading by example. You have to show effort first before others follow. We want to be nasty and leave everything on the field.” Fitzpatrick says .
Malone adds that the defense will bring consistency and work ethic to the field.
After an early exit last season with a 3-8 record, Coach Eads is quick to add that “it doesn’t matter what the record was

last year. We have a great opportunity for a good one this year.” With eight regular season home games, each kickoff provides an opportunity to win and play for more than just your team.
The opportunity to represent Gardendale and its community has been a big influence for both Fitzpatrick and Malone. They each credit Gardendale and Coach Eads for creating a sense of belonging and community.
“I like the atmosphere Gardendale brings. It is easy to play for them,” declares Fitzpatrick.
With his senior season approaching, Malone agrees saying, “I remember looking up at the guys that played underneath the Friday night lights. It gives me hope and motivation to go out and put on a show.”

Fitzpatrick and Malone are just two examples of the many Gardendale players putting in the work during summer workouts in preparation to end their high school career on a high note, but not without adding the importance of developing off the field as well.
“I don’t want to be known as just a good football player. I want to be known as a good person and a guy others can look up to and expect the best out of,” states

Fitzpatrick. Malone adds saying, “I want to leave a legacy of being a good guy in school, being a good teammate and friend, and being a good person because one day football will end.”
This fall, each senior will wear the Gardendale Rockets jersey for the last time, but until then, Coach Eads is “excited for what we have to look forward to and knowing with this team and their character, they are going to give it all they have.”
Coach Eads and his Gardendale Rockets will open up the season at James Clemens on August 23 before hosting Pinson Valley on August 30th.

Tombrello Collective offers custom home design
Have you ever stepped into someone’s house and it just looked custom designed to fit their personality? It usually involves items that were carefully curated to express that particular person’s personality, rather than purchased from a generic display in a box store.
That’s what Nate Prisoc wants for every home in the area.
“I have a very strong opinion that a house looks a thousand times better when it looks like it has been intentionally brought together and not bought just straight off a showroom store, because each space has to have personality and if it doesn’t reflect that person’s personality, it’s just bland,” Prisoc said.
That’s the focus of his new store, Tombrello Collective, on Main Street.
“My hope is that someone can come into my store and find something that
// Continued on Page 17 //

// Continued from Page 16 //
resonates with them, and then put it in their space, and that makes it more personal,” Prisoc said.
“A year ago, I started an Instagram account reselling some of my design finds–things I find at estate sales and antique malls,” Prisoc continued.”It just kind of took off and was doing really well.”
Since he had always wanted to own a store, he decided the time was right to find a place in his hometown.
“I wanted it to be a good mix of finds and new stuff so there would be something for everybody because not everybody has that look,” Prisoc explained of his store offerings. “I wanted everybody to be able to shop there, so the store has a good mix of both. But I wanted to still be true to my style.”
In keeping with being “true to his style,” the name of the store is an homage to his mom’s maiden name and his grandparents. He had always loved the name, and after a college professor told him to think about how he wanted to answer the phone.

“Basically, how many times do you want to say your own name?” Prisoc laughed. “If you are answering the phone, ‘This is Nate Prisoc of Nate Prisoc Designs,’ that gets repetitive.”
In addition to the store, Prisoc is also available to be hired for someone who wants their home designed or decorated, and the store will serve as a hub for clients to have meetings or look at samples. He has also operated a Christmas decorating company for the last 12 years and the storefront will be a hub for that, as well. Eventually, Prisoc hopes the store will be much more than a home goods store.
“I want it to be that, obviously,” Prisoc said. “But, I also want it to be a place where people can come ask questions or we host flower arranging classes or Christmas decorating classes. Eventually, I want to progress the space to have a place for showers or bridal teas, showers, little birthday parties, things like that. I just want it to be a hub for all things design.”
Tombrello Collective is located in the shopping center at 955 Main Street (next to Walgreen’s).
Getting into the Swing of a New School Year
Somehow, the new school year is only a few short days away. Gosh, the summer just flies right on by, doesn’t it? It still feels like summer in this Alabama heat, but the easygoing nature of summer is coming to an end as fall and its schedules creep their way in.
I really love summertime with all its holidays and trips and days by the pool, but fall is pretty easy to love, too, once you get into the swing of it. But we have to get into the swing of it and that’s tough because, well, backto-school is full of all things new. It’s hard to get into the swing of a whole new thing. I have thoughts like:
What will the teacher be like?
Will they be kind and patient and encouraging? Will they be heavy on homework or more focused on working hard during the day?
Will there be friends in the classroom? Will there be familiar faces to ease this transition into a new and more challenging grade?
What time do we need to start the day now? A new route, bus, or new school altogether will really change the morning routine.
Pack a lunch or buy a lunch?

There will be new schedules, friends, clothes, shoes, bedtimes, and haircuts…
Not only are kids embarking on a new school year, but they are also likely starting the first practices of fall sports and extracurriculars as well. New coaches, teams, practices, cleats, and plays. But, once we get past the first few weeks of August, we will ease into it. The new will become more routine. More natural. We will be able to anticipate and prepare more easily, and our days won’t feel as rushed. We will find our stride just as September and the comfort of fall begin to show themselves. Once the wind begins to cool just a tad, we will be in the swing of it.
And it will feel so good.
Best of luck on a smooth and easy First Day of School!

TOMATO, MOZZARELLA AND BASIL
The first of August is prime tomato pickin’ season in my garden!
These two recipes are similar, using cherry tomatoes and slicing tomatoes, basil, mozzarella and bottled balsamic glaze. The ingredients vary in size, shape and how you present them.
The skewers can be a fancy appetizer for a pool party or a simple lunchbox snack, sent with the balsamic glaze as a dipping sauce in a resealable container.
Both recipes are on my food blog, gritsandgouda.com, where I share all my Southern shortcut recipes!
Mozzarella Tomato Basil Salad
1 (8-ounce) log or roll of fresh mozzarella, sliced
15 to 18 basil leaves (about 1/3 cup packed)
3 Roma tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch-thick
2 tablespoons olive oil vinaigrette (optional)
3 tablespoons bottled balsamic glaze (such as Bertolli)
Layer tomato slices, basil leaves, and mozzarella slices on a platter, alternating each one as you arrange it on the platter.
If you like, drizzle with an olive oil vinaigrette or even simply extra virgin olive oil.
Drizzle with balsamic glaze right before serving.
Pro tip: Roma tomatoes are the perfect size and shape for this salad because they slice up to be the same size as the mozzarella.
Note: Balsamic glaze can be found in your supermarket on the salad dressing and vinegar aisle.
BALSAMIC GLAZE)
12 mozzarella balls (pearls)
24 cherry or grape tomatoes
24 very small basil leaves or large leaves folded over 12 (4 to 5-inch) wooden skewers
2 to 3 tablespoons bottled balsamic glaze (such as Bertolli)
On one wooden skewer (4 to 5-inches), thread a tomato, a basil leaf, a mozzarella pearl, then another basil leaf and tomato. Repeat this sequence with the remaining ingredients and skewers.
Place the finished tomato, basil and mozzarella skewers on a serving platter. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and serve immediately.
These skewers can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator and just drizzle with balsamic glaze right before serving.
For a back-to-school treat for teachers, pack the skewers in a sealable container and the balsamic glaze in a separate little container for a dipping sauce.

Akers living the dream in retirement
During the four-and-a-half decades Tom Akers worked in retail, he often joked with coworkers that he would just go sell hot dogs on the street. Then, a few years ago, things began to change at the company he worked for and it became clear retirement was on the horizon.
“I had kidded around for years that when I retired, I would just get a hot dog cart, and if the sun was shining I would sell hot dogs, and if it was raining, I would sleep in,” Akers laughed.
So that’s exactly what he does. The longtime Gardendale resident bought a cart in December and then, in April, began selling hot dogs from his stand fulltime. Most days you can find him under his umbrella at Advance Auto Parts on Fieldstown Road.

He named the cart “The Scalded Dawg,” as a nod to the cart’s inspiration: New York City’s “dirty water dogs.”
“Of course, it’s not dirt–it’s water you season with vegetable broth, beef broth or chicken broth and different herbs that people add to the water and that adds flavor to the dogs,” Akers explained.
As an added touch, after he “scalds” the dogs in the water, he grills them before topping them. And speaking of toppings, ordering those is a little different too.
For instance, if you want a typical hot dog with mustard, ketchup, kraut, onions and relish, tell Akers you just want “A Regular Mutt.” If you want some of the Scalded Dawg’s sauce, you’d need to order “The Good Boy.” If chili cheese hotdogs are more your taste, then you want
// Continued on Page 27//
// Continued from Page 26//
“A Bad Dog,” which comes complete with jalapenos and Akers’ own homemade chili. With those three staples on the menu, he also likes to get creative with a “dog of the week.” This week it was “The Georgia Bulldog” topped with applewood smoked sausage and grilled peppers and onions. Past specialties have included “A Trip to the Vet” with grilled Dr. Pepper onions, mustard and bacon bits and “The LAbrador Retriever” with a nod to “Lower Alabama” because it included a Conecuh sausage. Basically, Akers likes to have fun and share his creativity and love of cooking with the community around him.
“It’s a lot more fun than my retail job ever was,” Akers said. “A few weeks ago, the folks at my old employer had a big corporate visit, and they were running around like chickens with their heads cut off, stressed to the max, exhausted, and the only thing I was worried about was if I had enough hot dog buns.”
Summer BASH
Bill Noble Park hosted its Summer Bash event in June. These events are held quarterly at the park and provide fun, games and crafts for the whole family for little or no charge. The next event will be Pumpkin Palooza on October 25.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosts interest meeting
Alec Lambert, of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, spoke to a group of interested citizens in Gardendale recently about potentially bringing the program to the Gardendale area.
Lambert, who oversees the north Jefferson area for the organization, recently moved to the area and has been working in the local schools with the basketball team and on a Bible study with interested football players, but he hopes to create an active FCA chapter in Gardendale.
When Lambert was a college athlete in Tennessee, he got involved with the group as a student leader and it changed the course of his future.
“I just fell in love with the ministry, fell in love with how they do discipleship, and how they spread the gospel and their desire to see athletes come to faith,” Lambert said. “When I was in college, the biggest benefit was meeting people who were going through the same thing.”
The program isn’t to teach the students to be better people or even to drive church attendance, Lambert said. It is much deeper than that.
“My desire is for them to have a legitimate encounter with our creator,
Camp Bragg
If your child will be in the sixth-grade this year, Bragg Middle School will host two nights of “Camp Bragg.” One night will be for the Gray Team, on Monday, August 5; the other will be for the Maroon Team on Tuesday, August 6. You will know which team your child is on when you pick up the schedule at registration. The times for Camp Bragg will be from 5 until 6:30 p.m. We will begin in the gym with some
the one who is holding everything in balance and the one who has saved us from our own depravity,” Lambert said. “My desire is for disciples to be students and coaches whose faith in the Lord and following Jesus is the most important thing to them. My desire is students and coaches who live with reckless abandon for the sake of the gospel.”
His own experience with FCA gave him the chance to experience what it is like to be a part of the ministry, because the program is designed to be student-led with Lambert and others serving as advisors and helping them develop their faith and outreach in the community.
At this juncture, the program will need funding from the community to make it a reality and, once established, will need ongoing funding and volunteers interested in helping develop the young athletes into disciples.
Funding covers Lambert’s salary as well as program expenses like Bibles, camp scholarships and other items for the program. For more information, contact the Gardendale High School Athletic Department or visit fca.org.

We are in need of children’s and young adult books in good to perfect condition to stock our Little Free Library (LFL) located by the soccer fields off of Fieldstown Road. Donations can be placed directly in the LFL or you can bring them to the front desk at the library and we will take them to the LFL when we visit weekly.
Library Food Pantry
Our library food pantry always need the following items: hearty soups/stews/chili, varieties of canned chicken/tuna/ham, single-sized and regular-sized cereal, granola type bars, fruit cups, peanut butter, jelly, oatmeal/grits packets, pasta and Alfredo and other sauces and any toiletries. We take food only if it is not outdated and not opened.
