/ Editor’s Note / There are few things that awe me as much as true artistic talent. So this month’s cover story on Kevin Webster and his incredible talent with a paint brush was amazing to me. In Kevin’s studio, you constantly have to ask yourself if it’s a photograph or one of his paintings–for me, sometimes the only way to tell was to look for the artist’s signature in the corner. He has an incredible gift, as well as an amazing story about how he became an artists, as well as a military veteran, police dispatcher and camper builder. Our photographer, Brittany, and I had a wonderful time talking to him about his craft and his story. We also have a wonderful maker this month–Damaris Leon, of Dolce Vita candles. I first found her candles in Marketplace on Main when we featured them and since then have seen her popping up everywhere with her unique candles and their mouth-watering scents (as I write this, her luxury candle Chai di Zucca is burning next to me in my office). The story of her inspiration to start creating candles was shocking, but the care she puts into each candle design and scent sets her apart. This issue also features pictures from the annual Fall Carnival, which is always so much fun for me to shoot. The creativity and excitement of the kids (and adults) are so invigorating. Please be sure to look through this magazine, not just at the editorial, but also the businesses who support our work by buying ads. Because of them, we will have expanded space for stories and photos in our December issue. Stop by and let them know you appreciate them. Without our advertisers, community partners, and all of our readers, we wouldn’t be here, so please know we appreciate all of you. Rachel Davis Karr, Content Director

Dolce Vita: Different by Design What if the thing you loved was making your family sick? For Damaris Leon, that’s exactly what was happening. Her kids were having skin other health issues, her dogs were even having skin rashes. Eventually a doctor asked about candles and Leon got a shock. The popular candle brand she loved was the likely culprit. She stopped burning them and the issues cleared up. As she dug into the information, she realized it was likely the poor quality wax the candles used that was causing the problems so she began researching how she could have both candles and her family’s health restored. After almost eight months of research, Leon started making candles for her family and to sell in local boutiques. That was two years ago, and the Dolce Vita Candle Company has become a favorite locally because of the unique appearance . The unique look of the candles is by design. “I actually aim to be different,” Leon said. “ I’m the type of person who does not like to be like everyone else.” Caramel Macchiato and Fruit Loops are two of her most popular scents, but she is constantly working on new scents, new looks and new fun ideas for candles. Each candle is meticulously // Continued on Page 10 //

// Continued from Page 8 // scrutinized by Leon before it ever becomes available. “Testing is just a must,” Leon explained. “Each candle is different. Even if it’s the same size vessel, it could use a different wick, depending on how that fragrance works with that vessel and that wick.” All that testing comes after a lengthy design process. “I get a mental picture and have my daughter draw out my idea and then that’s what I go with,” Leon said. “But I have to 100 percent love it before I make it.” In addition to her regular dessert candle line, she recently launched an exclusive luxury line that is only available at Marketplace on Main or from her online store. She will also be launching Christmas gift boxes that will be great gifts. One will feature retro Christmas images, scents and designs, while another will feature her new Grinch candles. She also has Cookies with Santa candles that “smell like Santa.” In addition to online, Dolce Vita candles are sold in Marketplace on Main, Jade Ivy Boutique and Tiara’s Boutique. The luxury line is exclusively sold at Marketplace on Main.

LIFELONG LOVE

Kevin Webster on painting through the years First love doesn’t always last a lifetime, but for Kevin Webster it has. As a child, he fell in love with painting during visits with his grandfather and now, as he looks toward his second retirement, that first love still captivates him. “My grandfather lived in Montana and he learned to paint from Charles Russell—one of America’s greatest western artists,” Webster said. “My grandfather was an artist. Whenever I would see him, that was all I wanted to do.” Webster looked for any outlet to learn more about painting. “I took summer art classes at the old Gardendale Civic Center from a lady named Ms. Tillman, who was a teacher at Gardendale,” Webster explained. “So as early as second grade I loved art. In high school, I was in art club and had an art teacher that was really good and encouraging—Ms. Hobson.” After high school, he decided to // Continued on Page 14 //

// Continued from Page 13 // put his paintbrush down because he was determined to enlist in the military. He didn’t realize at the time that he could do both, as the military branches has positions for artists and photographers. Although it wasn’t his job, Webster still painted in his spare time, eventually earning recognition from the military and being asked to paint military scenes and timelines scenes honoring certain divisions. After serving 21 years in the Marines and Army, Webster retired back to his home in Gardendale and began working as a dispatcher at Homewood Police Department. He put his paintbrushes down for years and focused on the rest of his life. While working for the police department, he happened into a gallery near the police department after his shift. He met the owner, who was in the middle of teaching an art class and she invited him to join the class. Realizing she was not dealing with an amateur, the owner encouraged him to start painting again and began selling his art. He credits her friendship with getting him back into painting. After painting military scenes for so long, Webster needed to branch out to other types of subjects. He found that he loved painting animals–both wildlife and pets. He also found a love for painting one specific type of livestock. [ 14 ] Gardendale Magazine

“I love to paint cows,” Webster said with a laugh. “I like their noses.” Webster’s new subjects were wildly popular. His work was picked up by other galleries around the country, but eventually decided to limit himself to just one gallery to be sure he could generate enough artwork to fulfill his commitment. With a second retirement looming in just over a year, Webster will finally be a full-time artist for the first time in his life. He’s looking forward to painting more and being able to commit to learning even more about his craft. He is also keeping alive the tradition his grandfather started. In his basement, stacked with books about painting, light and perspective, Webster is passing on his love to his grandson, Grayson. “He’s going to be incredible,” Webster said. “He’s already so talented and he loves it like I do.” Webster’s art can be seen on his website at KevinWebsterArt. com or at ArceneauxGallery in Homewood. His work also hangs in Grandview and Children’s Hospitals, as well as military museums, offices and stations and many private collections.

Save to invert and cover pie to store in fridge. Whisk together the pudding mix and milk in a medium size bowl. Using a hand mixer at medium speed or a large whisk, beat the pudding mixture 2 minutes or until thickened. Place in the refrigerator to completely set up while preparing the rest of the pie. Using a hand mixer, beat the cream cheese in a large bowl until smooth and creamy. Add brown sugar and vanilla and beat 1 minute or until brown sugar is thoroughly blended. Stir in the chilled pudding and toasted pecans. Gently fold in half of the Cool Whip until no white streaks show. Spoon the pecan cream pie filling into crust. Dollop remaining Cool Whip in the center of the pie or around the edges of the pie. If you like, you can gild the lily by garnishing with a few whole pecans.
