Who is Larry York Drive named after?
In 2016, the Gardendale City Council renamed Civic Center Drive to Larry York Drive. Larry York was a council member in Gardendale from 1976 to 2008.
After graduating from Phillips High School in Gardendale, York graduated from Samford University with a degree in business administration. He then attended Cumberland Law School and received his degree.

At the time of the naming, Mayor Stan Hogeland said, “Larry has served our city for over 40 years. A great tribute to a mentor, a great man and a great family!”
In addition to his years on the council, York also served in various other roles around the city. With all the roles he served in the city, it seemed appropriate to name the road to the city’s event hub after York.
York’s wife, Alice Barton York, passed away in 2020.
