PUBLISHER’S
NOTE
A new year brings new beginnings. Who out there has kept a New Year’s Resolution? I’ve broken more resolutions than I will admit to, but there is one resolution I’ve made this year that I intend to keep. Birmingham Fun and Family magazine will grow and flourish, starting with an overhaul of the content you read each month in our magazine. For much of our twenty years in print, we’ve served parents by connecting them to local businesses and professionals who serve families. We will still excel in connecting businesses and customers, but you’ll notice some big changes coming soon to the look of this magazine. As I write this, we are developing our first-ever editorial plan; with it, we will bring you wonderful content that you’ll look forward to reading each month — stories, profiles, and more that tell the story of families in our community. But we don’t want to do this alone. We want and need you to share your voice, your ideas, your thoughts. We have a few questions for you, and for your time, you’ll have a chance to win one of three prizes. Scan the QR code below to open up the link on your phone for all the details. As always, thank you for reading and being part of our family! Cheers to the new year!

Terminal Station
Birmingham’s “Great Temple of Travel” comes to life in a new book Birmingham’s resurgence over the past ten years — what would it look like with one of the greatest Southern architectural works of the 20th century? In 1905, during the height of railroad expansion into Birmingham, five railroads collaborated to construct a new passenger station for Birmingham. Designed by renowned Atlanta architect Thornton Marye, the Byzantine-style station, with its 100-foot high dome and twin towers, was hailed as “the great temple of travel” and one of the finest railway station designs in the world. At its peak during World War II, the station handled 52 daily passenger trains, including some of the best in the country. In the two decades following the war, the once majestic station fell into decline, as travelers abandoned trains for planes and automobiles. Outdated and in disrepair, in 1969 the station was demolished to make way for an urban development project that never got off the ground. Fifty years later, the station’s passing is still mourned by an entire generation as the greatest single loss to Birmingham’s architectural heritage. Terminal Station has long deserved to have

its story told, and who better to tell it than a former employee of the station and awardwinning author, Marvin Clemons. In his new book, Great Temple of Travel, Clemons writes lovingly of the station’s history and its legacy of historical preservation. Through pages of historical text and rare photographs, Great Temple of Travel commemorates the 50th anniversary of the loss of Birmingham’s iconic Terminal Station and the passing of the “golden age” of passenger train travel. The Terminal Station is gone. Long live Terminal Station!

More than a park By Matthew Allen
Eight long years. That’s how long it’s been since Pratt City, in northwest Birmingham, was raked over by a tornado. After tornadoes ripped through on April 27, 2011, residents struggled to rebuild. But the city of Birmingham was committed to helping the area recover, promising to build a new park as the centerpiece of this historic community. On October 18, the city and residents from Pratt City celebrated the opening of the new One Pratt Place park, a 6-acre, $6.5 million public space adjacent to the Birmingham Public Library Pratt City branch. One Pratt Place stands as “the front yard to this cherished community, the centerpiece of Pratt’s revival,” said Birmingham mayor Randall Woodfin at a ceremony celebrating its opening. If the park resembles Railroad Park in some ways, it’s not by accident. The firms that worked on the signature park downtown — called by some as Birmingham’s “Central Park” — also worked on One Pratt Place. Funds for the development of the park largely came from federal disaster relief money, with the city

providing funds as well. What can you find at the park? In addition to expansive green space, the park has a meeting and activity building that tops out at 4,500 square feet. The building includes large sliding doors that allow the space to be enclosed or open. There is also playground equipment and climbing features for children, as well as an amphitheater and a splash pad. The park is accessible via Lacey Road, Hibernian Street, or Lafayette Street.

Just for Dads If you were at the Auburn vs. Samford game on November 23, you were part of a very small crowd. It was a 52-0 blowout by Auburn, but a game I will never forget. My 16-year-old redhaired middle child son scored us some free tickets to the WARD game, and he was determined WILLIAMS that we all go. The game was played in a November monsoon with very limited visibility, but I am so glad we were there. My son connects to us by spending time and going to events. As we start a new year, it is a good time to take stock of your relationships and to see how strong your connections are. Businesses fail, relationships end, Presidential candidates drop out, feelings are hurt, coaches are fired, and negative consequences happen when there is a lack of connection. Building a strong connection seems vitally important, but I bet I would not get a consensus definition of connection if I asked each one of you. In fact, if you search for the definition of connection you might come away thoroughly confused. It is often
confusion or lack of clarity that leads to a lack of connection. How are you doing forming strong connections? Building and making strong connections are considered a strong protective factor for a child’s well-being. Staying connected to your spouse is critical to the quality of that relationship. Some advantages for children who find strong attachment are the ability to make and keep friends, they trust others, enjoy being around other people, and trust adults. Find the way your kids connect. There are books on connecting and on love languages of kids. There is a very good chance your kids connect in different ways than you or your spouse did, but there are ways that kids connect that have not changed over time. Most kids still like to play games, use their imagination, play with water, ride bikes, play sports. It might surprise you that they like board games, card games, camping, or just throwing a ball. Here’s to a new year full of strong(er) connections. Ward Williams is the founder and executive director of Vineyard Family Services. Contact him at ward@vfsdads.com.

Review: Sweet Home Foods Moms and wine go together quite well, don’t they? Well, the next time you think about drinking around JOY your kids, take KING a break from the guilt and try Sweet Home wine. Hint: it’s not your typical wine…it’s a 100% non-alcoholic muscadine wine. One bottle will serve up to six people, so it’s a perfect complement to a meal with friends or a girl’s night. It’s a 100% non-alcoholic muscadine wine. One bottle will serve up to six people, so it’s a perfect complement to a meal with friends or a girl’s night.
This line of wine is distributed by a Birmingham company called jenniferharwellart, and varieties are available in red or white. It’s quite tasty for those who love a muscadine sweet flavor wine. For years, I’ve made fun of being able to have real wine for communion service. Well, Sweet Home may not be “real,” but it tastes better than plain grape juice! You can pick this up from local wineries including Corbin Farms in Calera or Hidden Meadows in Jemison, and it’s also available in select grocery stores around the Birmingham area. Cheers to 2020! Aldridge Gardens opens facility for plant classes by Lauren Dowdle
Hoover’s Aldridge Gardens has become a place where residents can enjoy the outdoors, learn about various plants, host events and view local artwork. Now, they can also add more hands-on activities to that list with a newly built
Educational Building. Aldridge Gardens held a ribbon cutting for its new building on November 21. It was funded by the NaphCare Foundation. Jim McLane, CEO of the NaphCare Foundation, and his wife, Rita, are actively involved with Aldridge Gardens. The couple

already displays their collection of bonsai plants at the Gardens, and they suggested building a place where they could have the bonsai classes. The bonsai members come to the Gardens to prune, care for and work with these unique plants. “There’s a huge bonsai community in Alabama. They’re very interesting plants,” says Tynette Lynch, CEO of Aldridge Gardens. “There’s an art to them.” However, there wasn’t a dedicated, indoor space where the bonsai members could work. Now that they have a designated space, Lynch says they can share these plants with an even larger audience. “We’re hoping more people in the community will want to come out and learn about these plants,” Lynch says. Having the building also gives other groups and classes a place to meet. “Educational groups needed a facility where you could get dirt and water on the floor and no one would care,” Lynch says. “Now, the new building will provide that experience.”
The building is designed with sinks, concrete floors, and floor drains, allowing classes to work and not be afraid to get the floors dirty. It is located next to the outdoor pavilion and has its own entrance, drive and parking pad. Previously, the Gardens would hold classes under the pavilion or on the patio of the house. However, if the weather was cold or wet, it could affect the classes. The new building now provides a space year-round. “It gives us a place to have classes, no matter the weather outside,” Lynch says. The Gardens will also host other educational classes in the new building, as well as field trips and summer camp groups. There are hands-on learning classes for children and continuing education classes for adults — so there’s really something for all ages. “It’s really attractive and matches the pavilion,” Lynch says of the new building. “It’s just what we needed.” Aldridge Gardens is located at 3530 Lorna Road in Hoover. A Strategic Vision for Catholic Education in Northern Alabama In our Catholic schools, our main priority is the formation of our students. Clearly, this is a mission that cannot be taken lightly, and the Diocese of Birmingham is blessed with committed and talented administrators, teachers, and staff who live this charge daily with our students. In addition, to guide the continued renewal of our Catholic schools, the Catholic Schools Office has developed a strategic plan for the schools in our Diocese that not only unifies us in a common mission that will impact our students each day, spiritually and academically, but also fulfills our hope that they will become future leaders of our faith. During the 2018-2019 school year, the Catholic Schools Office worked with a dedicated planning team under the direction of Dr. Erik
Goldschmidt of the Institute for School and Parish Development. The team consisted of school leaders, pastors, members of religious orders, community stakeholders, parents, and field experts and utilized data representing input from thousands of voices from our school and diocesan communities. The goal for this process was to revitalize and to strengthen the schools in the Diocese of Birmingham. The result of this concerted effort is a Strategic Plan for Catholic Education in the Diocese of Birmingham consisting of 13 goals and 82 objectives that will be implemented over 5 years, but even more so, the result is an articulated vision that outlines actionable steps that build upon and guide the excellence that is already present in our schools and provides CATHOLIC | CONTINUED ON PAGE 23

Boldly Catholic, academically excellent, rooted in truth Catholic schools have played a vital role in the education of young people across central Alabama since 1866 when St. John the Baptist Catholic School opened in Tuscaloosa. From those humble beginnings a network of schools spread across North Alabama. Today twentyfive Catholic schools minister to the spiritual, academic, physical and emotional needs of over 5,000 students age six weeks through high school. Spiritual growth fostered by caring and nurturing teachers focuses on virtue and truth, developing in students a moral framework from which to interact in society. Young people enact gospel values as they contribute to their communities through service and good works. Our students are involved in a wide variety of community service activities including feeding the needy and visiting the sick. They develop a deep prayer life and participate in social justice initiatives. A strong sense of love and care for neighbor is modeled and formed. A robust curriculum combined with research-based academic instruction contributes to a culture of academic excellence. Our students consistently score above their public-school peers on the ACT, SAT, IOWA and NAEP assessments. Central Alabama Catholic Schools feature a National Blue Ribbon School, a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Lighthouse School, and a Classical School. We are proud of our diverse programming including award winning Science
Olympiad and Robotics Teams and a nationally recognized drama program. Graduates attend state universities, Ivy League Colleges, Catholic universities and military academies. They go on to careers as religious, teachers, doctors, business leaders, lawyers, members of the military and public service employees. All Catholic schools offer athletic programs which promote good sportsmanship in the context of teamwork and perseverance toward a common goal. Our middle and high schools are members of the Alabama High School Athletic Association and consistently compete for state championships in a variety of sports. John Carroll athletes have gone on to careers in the NFL and NBA. Notable graduates from Central Alabama Catholic schools include Archbishop Joseph Marino, president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy; Dr. Eric Wieschaus, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine; Dr. Nakela Cook, Chief of Staff for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; Admiral Robert J. Natter, USN (Ret); Pat Sullivan, Heisman Trophy winner; Trace Armstrong, NFL; and Demarre Carroll, NBA. There is a Catholic school eager to partner with you in the education of your children. We look forward to the opportunity to work with you in helping your children reach their God given potential in all areas of life as we continue our 154-year tradition.

CATHOLIC | CONTINUED FROM PAGE 19 an avenue to create a collective impact in the academic and spiritual formation of our current and our future students. We are now beginning the implementation phase of the Strategic Plan. The prioritized plan of which objectives will be implemented in this first year consists of a series of specific, measurable action plans that will bring the goals to life in each school. Having such a wide level of engagement from so many stakeholders at each stage of the strategic plan process creates a culture of stewardship that will lead to a deep impact on our students, academically and spiritually, and will work to maintain, to support, to grow, and to celebrate Catholic education in the Diocese of Birmingham. Pope Saint John Paul II says, “Today, in particular, the pressing pastoral task
of the new evangelization calls for the involvement of the entire people of God, and requires a new fervor, new methods, and a new expression for the announcing and witnessing of the Gospel. The unified mission within the strategic plan certainly requires new fervor, new methods, and a new expression for announcing and witnessing of the Gospel within and through the students in our schools, and does so in an actionable way that will result in schools, in staff, and in students who are boldly Catholic, academically excellent, and rooted in truth.
