PUBLISHER’S
NOTE
Just like that, the temperature has cooled off ! And here we are, staring November in the face with Christmas lurking around the corner. As the temperatures start to drop, you’re probably making sure your winter coats are clean and ready to be used. But, what about those around us who might not have what they need to keep warm? We are partnering with several businesses around the metro Birmingham area to hold our first-ever Winter Coat Drive this month. Read more about how you can help on pages 28-29, and help us collect coats for the Jimmie Hale Mission here in Birmingham. We love a good book, and we met Tammy Arnau, a Hoover resident who wrote her first children’s book, “Allie, No! No!” Read about what inspired her to pursue this new endeavor on page 15. Read about these and many other topics inside the pages of this magazine. Got an idea or question? I’d love to hear from you. I can be reached at matthew@jbmcmedia.com. Thanks for reading!

Just for Dads Being a huge fan of country music, I have really enjoyed Ken Burns’ documentary, The History of Country Music. My son and I were talking on the way home from church and I mentioned to him that after watching it, I think fatherhood and country WARD music have a lot in common. WILLIAMS My son, thinking he was clever, asked me what alcohol and a man’s relationship with women have to do with fatherhood. I commented, “Son, there are lots of children in this world because of alcohol and men’s relationship with women.” Here are three ways I think good country music and successful fatherhood are similar: Both are greatly influenced by family tradition. In both, you learn from the generations before you. There are so many things that are unique to your individual family, from old wives’ tales to unique beliefs that have been taught generation after generation. Keep them, cherish them, and pass them down. The importance of understanding the individuality of each person. Garth Brooks finally
Good country music is a collaborative effort and not competitive. was successful when he stopped trying to imitate George Strait. Everybody, including musicians and children, are created unique. There is only one Garth Brooks, only one Hank Williams, only one Jimmie Rodgers and only one of your child (or each of your children) that was created to be set apart with their own destiny and purpose. We can raise our kids with the same principles, but we have to realize they are unique. Best when done collaboratively. Good country music is a collaborative effort and not competitive. In parenting, we are all too often competitive with other’s successes instead of working together when there are struggles and disappointments and celebrating the victories. Johnny Cash was cut by his record label. Out of that disappointment came the collaboration of The Highway Men, which produced some of the best music ever created. We are stronger when we collaborate, work together and use the gifts of others to help our situation. Ward Williams is the founder and executive director of Vineyard Family Services. School News HOOVER
BIRMINGHAM
Prince of Peace Catholic School eighth grade students recently participated in a “green engineering day” field trip to Southern Research‘s STEM Education Outreach Center in Birmingham. The visit complemented their current classroom studies about energy, and they were able to do handson applications of energy concepts. The middle schoolers created their own circuit necklaces, complete with an LED light, studied the effects of angles and temperature changes on solar panels, and designed a turbine for a hydroelectric dam. They competed to create the most energy-efficient solar panels and the most powerful water turbines. The students measured voltage and current of the turbines to determine whose design generated the most power. POP middle school science teacher Mary Elizabeth Sammis discovered this awesome learning opportunity through her network of local scientists.
In the United States, fewer than 0.14% of all high school graduates ace the ACT, a standardized test for high school students used by colleges in their admissions process. The Altamont School in Birmingham has five seniors in the class of 2020 with the highest possible composite score (36 out of a possible 36). The latest member of their senior class to achieve this benchmark is Wilson Tynes, who joins classmates Sameer Sultan, Benjamin Tang, Ahad Bashir, and Robert Pigue in this rare accomplishment. During the past five years, 10 Altamont students have earned a 36 on the ACT. Have school news you’d like to see here? Email the details to matthew@jbmcmedia.com.

Review: Urban Cookhouse Urban Cookhouse, a restaurant born in Birmingham that now has 10 locations in four states, offers up delicious yet budget-friendly options for your entire family. And best of all, their menu is full of healthy, JOY local, farm-to-table meals. If KING your little one can’t wait for the meal to be prepared, they can always snack on some complimentary cheerios. Now if only they had something for the starving adults while they wait! Nothing sticks to your ribs like an old fashioned peanut butter sandwich, and Urban Cookhouse offers their own version, with a twist. Theirs is called the Grilled Peanut Butter Fluff, served hot off the grill, the peanut butter in the middle topped with marshmallow cream on plain white bread. If you child has a nut allergy, there are nut-free choices like grilled cheese, chicken strips, mac-n-cheese with ham, or a fruit cup. Each kid’s meal is served with potato stix or veggie straws, fresh fruit, and milk or juice. Your children can learn more about the farmers that supply the food with custom coloring sheets, too.
For parents, they offer an array of wines, prosecco, and local beers at each location. Now that temperatures are finally dropping, check out some of the soups on the menu that are made fresh daily, too. Here’s a fun fact for you: one of their farmers supplied them with 500 strawberries to make their strawberry lemonade. You can’t get any fresher than that! Urban Cookhouse is also on the Eat Drink Ride Food Tour, so come along and see if we’re having something savory or sweet. I love chicken, so we chicken roll ups are always a favorite option, topped off with their delicious half baked cookies. Either way, you will leave Urban Cookhouse rubbing your tummy! Inspired by mischief A local dog’s knack for getting in trouble leads to his owner’s first children’s book By Brooke Tyler Image courtesy of Tammy Arnau
After her youngest child went to college, Tammy Arnau decided to get a dog. As a mom to two boys, then 20 and 23, she had a “mother crisis” and needed something to care for with both of her sons out of the house. “A vet in Vestavia Hills had a picture of a puppy,” said Arnau, a Hoover resident. “I asked to take her home to see if she was a good fit. Well, she was awful. So I took her back and told them we tried, and I don’t think we can do it.” But after a few days, she went back and got her and kept her over the weekend. That visit didn’t go any better than the first. She told her husband they couldn’t keep her. But Arnau couldn’t get the dog off her mind and went back again and the third time was a charm. So, after some training, Arnau said Allie has found her place in their home. “She has been rehabilitated, but not before she chewed 11 beds,” she said. “She got kicked out of dog training because she bit her trainer on the first day.” Now almost five, Allie is a well-behaved dog, and Arnau chose to chronicle the tough times in her book “Allie, NO! NO!” because for so long, those were the most common words in their house. A mix of a pit and a lab, Arnau describes Allie like a bull in a China shop. Although she is 70 pounds, she acts like a lap dog. Arnau said Allie has many endearing qualities, but the first year or so was rocky. “I don’t write at all, but I’ve read thousands of children’s books with my kids and thought this would be a great little story,” she said. She kept the book personal, using the names of her sons and what they call their grandparents, and Arnau said this is the first in a series of books featuring Allie.

Shelby County Fair celebrates 70 years
In 1949, the average cost of a new house in the U.S. was $7,450, a gallon of gas was just 17¢, and George Orwell’s novel “1984” was first published. And, in Columbiana, the first Shelby County Fair was organized, a project of the Columbiana Kiwanis Club, then just two years old. “Kiwanis Clubs focus on changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time,” said Michael Letlow, fair manager for the Shelby County Fair. “The Shelby County Fair is our main fundraiser for the year, allowing us to serve schools all across the county.” In years past, the fair has provided the club with enough money to donate funds to nearly every school library in Shelby County Schools, local boy and cub scout groups, FFA Clubs, the Key Club at Shelby County High School, and many other organizations. “This year, we plan on funding all those things again, along with a new project — funding the installation of a sensory room

Baby Café
expands in Birmingham
For an expectant or nursing mother, it can be lonely sometimes. Questions might arise, and having someone to talk to can make a world of difference. St. Vincent’s Health System offers a unique experience called Baby Café, just for these mothers to find answers to their questions. “Baby Café is a wonderful program for expectant and nursing moms to have the opportunity to spend time asking questions and receiving support from our certified lactation consultants and a network of other women who are in a similar stage of nursing and parenting,” said Sandy King, RN, IBCLC, Monogram Maternity Lead with St. Vincent’s Health System. “It’s a relaxing environment that equips women with the resources they need to be confident in their breastfeeding journey. We are thrilled to expand our services to provide this resource to more moms in more communities.” This fall the program will expand to include two new locations: • Beginning November 4, St. Vincent’s Baby Café Hoover will take place every Monday from 10am-noon at Prince of Peace Catholic Church (St. Elizabeth
•
Room, 4600 Preserve Parkway, Hoover, AL 35226). Beginning November 7, St. Vincent’s Baby Café North will take place every Thursday from 9-11am at Crossroads Baptist Church (Mommy & Me Room, 801 Highway 160, Warrior, AL 35180).
Existing Baby Café locations will continue as well: • Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1-3pm at the St. Vincent’s Birmingham women’s and children’s center (4th floor, 810 St. Vincent’s Drive, Birmingham, AL 35205) • Fridays from 10am-noon at St. Vincent’s East (Building 50, classroom 4, 2nd floor, 50 Medical Park Drive East, Birmingham, AL 35235) • Wednesdays from 10am-noon at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen (conference center, 7191 Cahaba Valley Road, Hoover, AL 35242) For more information, visit stvhsbaby.com. Product Recalls Few things are more frustrating than researching and shopping for items that we need for our children -- cribs, strollers, clothes, shoes, baby monitors...the list goes on and on -- and finally making the purchase, only to find out later that the item is being recalled. Product recalls can be mildly inconvenient, but they serve a good purpose by informing us of potential issues with the products that we have purchased. BFFM wants to keep you in the loop about products that have been recalled that you might have purchased for your family. The list below is up to date as of October 20. For more recent recalls, visit recalls.gov. IKEA MATVRÅ infant bibs POTENTIAL HAZARD: The snap on the bibs can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. COAT DRIVE
strives to keep homeless warm during winter Chances are, this very moment, your closet has several coats in it; some light, some heavy, but there are probably several to choose from. For many in our own community, though, the situation is not so good. Old, tattered coats -- or no coats at all -- are all they have. It’s estimated that 1 in 5 children in America live in poverty, and 41% live in low-income households. As we move into November, colder months are just around the corner. Birmingham Fun and Family is proud to be partnering with businesses around the Birmingham area to hold a coat drive

this month, along with individual classrooms at several local schools. Simply drop in to one of these local businesses to donate a new or gently used coat; you can donate coats and jackets for children, men, and women, in any size. At the end of November, we’ll collect them and deliver them to the Jimmie Hale Mission in Birmingham, who will be able to use them for families they serve. If you’d like to help in another way, email us at matthew@jbmcmedia.com. Thank you for joining this effort to help our neighbors in need!
