PUBLISHER’S

NOTE

It’s September, and every school in the Birmingham area is back in session. Just a few weeks ago, we watched as parents posted their children’s back-to-school photos on social media, and we are excited to share a small handful of those with you on page 14. It’s no secret that people in Birmingham are among the most philanthropic in the entire country — when we give to good causes, we give in a BIG way. Read on page 6 about the money raised from the Alabama Auto Show back in April. The money you spent to attend the show went to some pretty incredible causes. You know what else Birmingham is known for? FOOD! Journalists from some of the most respected media outlets routinely promote the Magic City as a “must visit” destination for foodies. This month, we’re excited to welcome Joy King, owner of Eat.Drink.Ride, as she reviews a local familyfriendly food establishment each month. Check out what she recommends on page 20. There is plenty else to read this month: find out why after-school programs are beneficial (page 26); read our guide to local consignment sales (page 22); and learn more about the local nonprofit Bundles of Hope (page 28). Got an idea or question? I’d love to hear from you. I can be reached at matthew@jbmcmedia.com. Thanks for reading!

Just for Dads Describe your childhood relationship with your father, using three to five words. Does the thought of your father affect you emotionally? Over the past fifteen years, I have asked thousands of men in WARD fatherhood classes to consider WILLIAMS this question. Over the years, the words men use to identify their experience with their dad have either been very positive or very negative, with a wide canyon between their responses. Many fathers believe they have done a fantastic job raising and connecting with their children. The struggle for many dads is that their children are the ones who get to make the judgement call on if their dad connected with them and did a good job as their father. It is even more confusing that in the same household different siblings with similar experiences can, and often

will, judge differently. My oldest son spent this summer working outof-state and was asked by peers to give a depiction of his father. I eagerly awaited the answer to how my son represented my ‘wonderful and engaging characteristics’ to his friends. He was not verbose with his description. He told his friends I kind of act like a Youth Pastor. I guess that being described as Youth Pastor is a pretty good thing, but I have higher hopes. My goal when my kids describe me with three to five words is that they say I am the best dad ever. There is often dismissal and laughter when I state this ambition in my classes, but I think striving to be the best dad ever will help ensure that my kids’ answer to describing their dad in three to five words will be a positive emotional experience. In the quickly fleeting moments of childhood, we are going to leave either a positive or negative legacy, so make the most of each opportunity you have to impact your kids.

SAFE KIDS ALABAMA

Coalition keeps children safe through awareness education In 1989, transporting children in a vehicle was a lot different than today — there were no child passenger restraint or seat belt laws in Alabama, for one. It was also the year Children’s of Alabama launched the state chapter of SAFE Kids. Thirty years later, the state’s roads are much safer for children and their families. Alabama was one of the first states to start a statewide SAFE Kids coalition, launching a campaign of education, legislation, environmental modification, and technological application. The purpose of SAFE Kids Alabama was to build a statewide, grassroots coalition and to encourage corporate and private participation in preventing unintentional injury to children. “It’s one of those things that people may take for granted, but this state is truly safer for children and drivers of all ages today than it was 30 years ago,” said Dr. Bill King, the coalition’s first director and now retired at Children’s and a Professor Emeritus at UAB. “A lot of hard work by a lot of people and agencies from all across the state, including bipartisan political efforts, was necessary. Our numbers of severe injuries and deaths in children are much better than where we were.” Marie Crew, director of SAFE Kids Alabama, pointed to several Children’s-led initiatives involving pedestrian safety, bicycle and ATV safety, and distracted driving as examples of raising awareness. “Our immediate focus is on helping raise safety awareness among teens and their parents,” Crew said. “As the old saying goes, ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ We want to do everything we can to help parents model safe driving behaviors and to initiate what can be uncomfortable conversations with their children about the risks associated with the responsibility of driving.”

MAKING STRIDES

While the state is statistically safer, motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death and disability for children in Alabama. Accomplishments since 1989 include: • An increase in overall child passenger safety usage from less than 10% in 1981 to more than 96% today. • Passage of notable state laws, including but not limited to: 1982 – State law requiring children through age 3 to be transported in child passenger safety seats. 1991 – State’s first law mandating seat belt usage in the front seat. 1994 – Law requiring children younger than 8 years of age to wear a properly secured USCG personal flotation device at all times while onboard any boat, except when in an enclosed cabin. 1995 – Bicycle helmet law passed, requiring everyone under the age of 16 to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. 2002 – First Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) passed 2006 – Car seat law amended to include booster seats. 2010 – GDL amended with numerous restrictions, including use of any handheld communication device.

MEDICAL SPOTLIGHT

Healthcare

PROFESSIONAL Dr. Kasey Davis now offers conscious sedation. We caught up with her to find out more about this unique service. BFFM: OK, an obvious question...what is conscious sedation? Dr. Davis: This is a mild-moderate level of sedation, ideal for patients who need more than just laughing gas, but don’t need or want IV sedation or general anesthesia. It’s taken orally by pill around an hour beforehand. During conscious sedation, you aren’t asleep, although it may feel like you are. You won’t realize the passing of time, and you normally have little to no memory of the procedure. It’s great if you experience extreme fear, severe discomfort being in an office setting or with dental instruments, are restless sitting for an extended period of time, have extremely sensitive teeth, have difficulty getting numb, have a strong gag reflex, or a fear of needles. BFFM: Is there an ideal age for this? Dr. Davis: It’s ideal for ages 12-65 if you’re relatively healthy. But we don’t yet offer it for those younger than 12. We CAN sedate anyone over 65 if they have no significant

health concerns. BFFM: Any side effects? Dr. Davis: Because the medications we use are given only an hour beforehand, there are certain side effects you may experience hours after completion, including drowsiness, sluggishness, total loss of memory of the procedure (an advantageous side effect), and slow reflexes (why a driver is required). BFFM: This sounds like a great new service! Dr. Davis: Yes, it’s one that we’ve been working toward and are excited to offer it to our patients!

Product Recalls Few things are more frustrating than researching and shopping for items that we need for our children -- cribs, strollers, clothes, shoes, baby monitors...the list goes on and on -- and finally making the purchase, only to find out later that the item is being recalled. Product recalls can be mildly inconvenient, but they serve a good purpose by informing us of potential issues with the products that we have purchased. BFFM wants to keep you in the loop about products that have been recalled that you might have purchased for your family. The list below is up to date as August 1. How Chamber membership works for me. As a small business owner, my investment in The Shelby County Chamber was a great decision for my company for a variety of reasons, but the special discount I receive from Office Depot as a Chamber investor is unbelievable! Every time I go, I receive a discount, but I almost didn’t believe the Office Depot salesperson on my last visit: I’d ordered 500 sheets with color printing, cut in half that came to almost $700 with tax. When I shared with them my Chamber discount, my total was only $112 with tax. The savings on this one order covered my annual Chamber investment – for multiple years! Being a Chamber investor pays off.

Great deals on children’s clothes, supporting great causes By Brooke Tyler

Birmingham is known for its consignment sales, many of which are held both in the spring and fall. While shoppers show up and find great deals quickly, an untold number of people and hours of work go into making these sales happen. We’ve put together some tips for a few local sales, and we caught up with event organizers to learn more about their sales.

RENEWED THREADS, ALABASTER Restore Alabaster, 128 Market Center Drive facebook.com/renewedthreads Thursday, Sept. 12 | 6:30-8:30pm Friday, Sept. 13 | 8am-6pm Saturday, Sept. 14 | 8am-noon (some items are 50% off on Saturday) Renewed Threads is a bi-annual baby and children’s consignment sale that features around 50 consignors and offers a variety of boutique and play clothing, baby equipment, toys, books, nursery décor and more. The sale has been taking place for 10 years and includes a Thursday night pre-sale ($5 cash at the door). “Our sale has remained small, as we want to offer a more intimate and less overwhelming shopping experience,” said organizer Rachel Ollis. “Our sale supports our Children’s Ministry [at Alabaster First United Methodist Church], which provides an incredible VBS experience for more than 250 children in our area, as well as new playground equipment and community events throughout the year. This sale helps us minister to hundreds of children in our community and beyond.” Tips: No strollers or shopping bags. Bring a laundry bag and umbrella stroller. Cash and cards accepted ($3 fee).

KINGDOM KIDS CONSIGNMENT SALE Gardendale Mt. including Royal Family Kids Camp, Cornerstone Ranch Camp, The North Jefferson Women’s Center, The Lovelady Center, The Firehouse Shelter and many national and international missionaries,” said organizer Kelly Norris. “Money is also invested in our youth for mission trips along with spiritual camps and events.” Tips: Cash, check and debit/credit cards (with a 3% fee) Bring a basket or cart to hold your items while you shop.

ASBURY GIGGLES & GRACE CONSIGNMENT SALE Asbury United Methodist Church, 6690 Cahaba Valley Road, Birmingham, asburygigglesandgrace.com Friday, Sept. 6 | 8am-6pm Saturday, Sept. 7 |8am-noon This bi-annual consignment sale is in its 12th year. A portion of the proceeds are given to support the children and youth programs at the church and various mission groups in the area including Oak Mountain missions, Kings Home, Foster Care of Shelby County, And the Lovelady Center. “Our sale has only been a success for the past 12 years because of the amount of hours of hard work put in by our volunteers,” said Jennifer McInnish, publicity co-chair for Giggles and Grace. “We have a co-chair committee of 21 who put in countless hours of prep work to bring the sale to fruition.”

Birmingham Auto Dealers give back in a big way By Matthew Allen It was a sight to behold for four days in April: some of the newest models of vehicles from dozens of manufacturers, all under one roof at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex. While it was a playground for car enthusiasts and a fun outing for families, there was something bigger going on. With every paid ticket, money was being raised for a variety of nonprofits from around Birmingham. The money raised for these causes was amazing. “We gave $300,000 to ten very worthy causes,” says Jennifer Whisenant, the executive director of the Birmingham Automobile Dealers Association, the organization over the event. “It’s the largest amount we’ve ever given. We are so grateful to our sponsors, patrons, and those who came to the gala and auto show.” Money was raised through a gala on April 4 at Vestavia Country Club, through sponsorships from corporate partners (including America’s First Federal Credit Union, the presenting sponsor), and ticket sales.

Recipients of funding this year include the Ady’s Army, the Bell Center, Big Oak Ranch, Brighton House, Children’s Harbor, Cornerstone School, Glenwood, Nick’s Kids Foundation, the Shelby County Arts Council, and Sight Savers America. Go ahead and put the next year’s Alabama Auto Show on your calendar: April 2-5, 2020 at the BJCC. For more information, visit alabamaautoshow.com.

(with diapers!) It might not be something that crosses your mind that often, but diapers are an expensive necessity for anyone with an infant or toddler. Did you know that diapers aren’t covered by government programs like SNAP or WIC? In the Birmingham area, there are almost 15,000 children younger than 5, and nearly a third of our community lives below the poverty line, defined as $24,250 for a family of four. These two statistics, when combined, create a very real need in our own backyard, and a local nonprofit called Bundles for Hope helps address it head on. In 2014, a group of women from Mountain Chapel UMC in Vestavia Hills were planning a baby shower for a single mother. As they discussed the high cost of diapers, one of the women mentioned a friend from college who started a diaper bank in the Washington DC area. The seed was planted, and Barrett Ford and Nancy Owen began assessing “diaper need” in the Birmingham area. They reached out to nearby food banks and churches as well as United Way’s 2-1-1 Assistance Line and found that “diaper need” was, in fact, a reality

for thousands of families in our area, and yet, there was nowhere for these families to turn. Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank held their first diaper drive in October 2014, collecting more than 3,500 diapers and giving away 2,300 of those diapers in December at the Green Valley Baptist Church’s Food Bank. Within the first year of operation, nearly 20,000 diapers were distributed to families in need. In October of 2018, they distributed their one-millionth diaper and now serve around 600 families each month. This September 20-29, their annual “Stuff the Bus” campaign will take place below the Target shopping center, fronting Highway 280. Their greatest needs are sizes 4, 5, 6, and pullups, and cash donations are accepted as well. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram to learn more about their efforts.

What to look for in an after-school program By Tanni Haas, Ph.D. When considering an appropriate after school program for your child, how do you choose among the programs available? What are some important factors to consider? Drawing on the advice of reputable organizations such as the Afterschool Alliance, the Afterschool Network, and the National Afterschool Association, I’ve developed a list of things to think about as you evaluate your different options. It’s advisable to contact each program director and ask for permission to see the actual spaces where your child would spend their time before you make any decisions. Look around and ask yourself the following questions: •

Is the homework space separate from the space dedicated to other, non-academic activities like arts and crafts, music, and sports? Is the space well-lit and clean? Is it decorated in uplifting, kid-friendly colors? Does the space have areas where children can work together in small groups as well as independently? Is it possible for them to work quietly on their own as well as to talk and share ideas with others? Is there comfortable furniture like armchairs, bean bags or large floor cushions where children can relax and immerse themselves in a good book? Does the space have plenty of computers, printers, and other learning tools? Is there a library with a broad selection of fiction and non-fiction books for kids of different ages? Is the space well-stocked with nonelectronic games that stimulate children’s cognitive skills like chess, checkers, puzzles and word games? Is there access to clean and safe restrooms nearby?
