The University of South Carolina Aiken The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for

students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA

received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

The Peach Belt Conference Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. History: Now entering its 21st year of existence in 2010-11, the Peach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 29 national championships and 25 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06 while Armstrong Atlantic State women’s tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 2009-10 season was among the most successful the league has seen in its 20 years. AASU won their third consecutive women’s tennis national championship while the Augusta State men’s basketball team continued their unprecedented run with a third straight appearance in the Elite Eight. Flagler became the first PBC volleyball team to reach the NCAA Final Four. The North Georgia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation in every regular-season softball poll while, in all, five PBC programs were ranked #1 in the nation (GCSU men’s golf, ASU men’s basketball, AASU men’s and women’s tennis). The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt expanded to 13 members, the most the league has ever had, with the additions of Montevallo and Flagler. The two schools also returned a league presence to Florida and broke new ground in Alabama. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. Dr. Kendall Blanchard, president of Georgia Southwestern State University, began the first of his two-year term as the league president in July of 2010. The conference currently holds

championships in 13 sports, six for men and seven for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf.

The Pacers concluded their season with a 2-0 loss to league rival Lander in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer Championships. Alex Lewis was named to the PBC All-Tournament Team for his efforts during the tournament. The Pacers had two players receive all-conference accolades in 2009. John Lesko and Troy Watson were named to the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer All-Conference Team for the second year in a row. A four year starter for the Pacers, Lesko was named to the second team as a defender, while Watson was named to the second team as a midfielder. Lesko was the only Pacer named to the 2009 Daktronics All-Region team. He was a second team selection. Watson led the Pacers in 2009 with a team-high seven goals and seven assists for a team-high 21 total points, finishing the regular season in the top 10 in the PBC in seven different categories. He was selected as the PBC Player of the Week twice in 2009, winning the award on Sept. 9 and Sept. 22. Watson netted three match-winning goals in 2009 for the Pacers. Five USC Aiken men’s soccer student-athletes were selected to the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer All-Academic team. The Pacers had four student-athletes chosen to the first team, while one Pacer was tabbed to the second team. The first team featured USC Aiken’s Chijioke Agbasi, Fernando Gamez-Noriega, Amr Hailat and Svetlin Penchev. A PBC All-Academic choice in 2008 as well, James Chidsey was chosen to the 2009 second team.

Women’s Soccer: 2010 Season Outlook 11

2010 Women’s Soccer: Season Outlook The Pacers begin their sixth campaign under the tutelage of Sue Vodicka in the 2010 season. As the new year begins, things have never looked brighter for the USC Aiken women’s soccer program. USC Aiken commences the upcoming season coming off a terrific conclusion to the 2009 season as the Pacers closed out last year by winning four of their final five games. The 2009 Pacers were honored for their strong close and overall improvement by being honored as one of the top 20 most improved NCAA Division II women’s soccer programs. The Pacers improved their win total by three games in 2009. USC Aiken’s final tally on the year may have gone down as just 6-11, but the Pacers in total ended the year with nine one-goal losses, which includes three overtime losses. In one of the toughest conferences in all of women’s soccer, USC Aiken lost six of its eight games in the Peach Belt Conference by just one goal. The Pacers’ strong close to last season coupled with the fact that the Pacers welcome back 10 letterwinners along with a incoming class of 10 talented individuals gives Vodicka reason to believe that things are on the upswing. “I am really excited about the upcoming season,” noted Vodicka. “I am just thrilled about the prospects of the upcoming year. I think that we have a good blend of leadership returning that fits in very nicely with an incoming class that features not only

individual talent, but players from winning programs.” The Pacers’ youth movement will give glimpses of what is to come with Pacer women’s soccer and it may even lead to USC Aiken eventually becoming one of the top programs in the PBC, but more than likely the 2010 season will be a learning year as 17 of USC Aiken’s 23 players on the current roster are underclassmen. The influx of young talent leads Vodicka to assert that the goal for the Pacers in the 2010 season is plain and simple: play in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. “The Peach Belt Conference is very tough,” remarked Vodicka. “We were very disappointed that we were not able to make the conference tournament last year. We pick up a couple of those one-goal losses and we are in the conference tournament. That is the goal this year.

“We are a program that covets bigger things; we are in the process of changing the culture and learning from last year can only help us in the future. That is what Coach Deer and I have been preaching all offseason. You have to change something internally and as a program to change the future.” For a program that is still in its fledgling years that mindset is essential, which is why Vodicka believes that many years from now the past few years will eventually be viewed as the “turning point of the program.” “Right now I have a cohesive group of individuals who are just a pleasure to coach,” said Vodicka. “Most of the players we are bringing in were recruited by Division I institutions and quite simply can be viewed as program changers. They will mold nicely with our returners and help us to have arguably one of the strongest benches we have had since I have been here.” Vodicka is also quick to mention that, “not only are these individuals great athletes, but they are also great students. They work hard to daily better themselves in the classroom and on the pitch. I am proud of what they have accomplished academically, particularly since our squad has maintained a GPA above 3.0 with over 23 studentathletes on the roster. That is quite an accomplishment.” The talent plus the strong academic acumen should make the USC Aiken women’s soccer program one to follow in the coming years.

USC Aiken women’s soccer head coach Susan Vodicka will begin her sixth season at USC Aiken in 2010. In her first five seasons, the Pacers have posted a 24-54-5 record. The 2009 USC Aiken women’s soccer team was honored as one of the top 20 most improved NCAA Division II women’s soccer teams. The Pacers were able to obtain a 1.34 rating to leave them with the 15th-best improvement in all of Division II women’s soccer. USC Aiken improved its win total by three games in 2009. The 2009 USC Aiken women’s soccer campaign ended with the Pacers owning a 6-11 record overall. USC Aiken finished the season winning four of its final five games. The Pacers concluded the 2009 Peach Belt Conference season with a 2-8 record. In a season full of close contests for the Pacer women, USC Aiken ended its 2009 Peach Belt Conference slate having been on the losing side of three overtime games in PBC action. In total, USC Aiken finished its 2009 season with nine one-goal losses. USC Aiken’s defensive unit had a tremendous season-ending stretch of not allowing a goal. The Pacer defense had not given up a goal in just over 501 minutes before surrendering the first goal of the match to GCSU in their season finale. The Pacers had played the entire 90 minutes of the previous four matches without giving up a goal. In 2008, Vodicka guided the Pacers to a 3-15-2 record, which included a 1-7-1 record in Peach Belt Conference games. Vodicka engineered a remarkable turnaround in 2006, guiding her squad to a fourth place finish in the Peach Belt Conference after being predicted to place ninth. USCA finished the season 7-11-2, including a 4-4-1 mark in PBC play. The four conference wins marked the combined total for the program’s previous six seasons of league play. The conference coaches took notice of the work Vodicka had done and voted her the 2006 PBC Coach of the Year, the first USC Aiken women’s soccer coach to earn that award. Vodicka was named the second head women’s soccer coach at USC Aiken in the program’s history on July 20, 2005. In her first season with the Pacers, Vodicka began laying the building blocks for a successful program moving forward. Hired late in the summer, Vodicka fielded a team that was short on numbers, but not on excitement and hard work. Vodicka came to USCA with 11 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience, including one season as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University. She served as an assistant at the College of William & Mary, Washington State and George

Mason University. As a student-athlete at George Mason, Vodicka was a member of three NCAA Tournament teams. The 1983 squad made it to the national championship game and her 1985 team claimed the NCAA National Championship by beating North Carolina in the title match. She earned a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in English from GMU in 1986 and a Virginia Secondary Teaching Certificate in 1992. The George Mason graduate served as assistant coach at her alma mater from 1999 to 2003. During her five seasons, the Patriots were 49-48-7 overall but went 25-11-3 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. GMU tied for first place in the CAA in 2000 and 2001, and finished second in 2002. The team was the CAA Tournament runner-up in 2000 and 2002. At GMU, Vodicka coached six NSCAA All-Region selections, 13 All-CAA selections and 10 All-CAA Tournament selections. More impressively, while overseeing the team’s academics for all five seasons, 41 Patriot women’s soccer players received the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award and the squad posted George Mason’s highest team GPA in six of nine semesters. Before accepting the position at her alma mater, Vodicka served as head coach for one season at Virginia Commonwealth. The Rams posted a 7-9-2 overall record and a 2-5-1 mark in the CAA. While she spent just one season at the helm of the program, her impact was strong. VCU earned the program’s first ever conference wins over James Madison and American University, and they tied 10thranked Virginia. In addition, her squad produced two All-CAA selections. Vodicka made her collegiate head coaching debut after serving two seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Washington State. In her first season in Pullman, Wash., the Cougars doubled their win total from the previous season. In two seasons combined, Vodicka coached four All-PAC-10 selections while nine Cougars earned PAC-10 AllAcademic honors. Vodicka began her collegiate coaching career at the College of William & Mary where she served as assistant coach from 1993 to 1995. During Vodicka’s three seasons at William & Mary, the Tribe made three NCAA Tournament appearances, posted a 43-16-2 record and went unbeaten in the CAA at 15-01. The team captured two CAA Championships and finished as the runnerup once. The 1994 squad went 17-4-0 (6-0-0 CAA) on its way to winning the CAA Championship and making the NCAA’s Sweet 16.

Men’s Soccer: 2010 Season Outlook 24

2010 Men’s Soccer: Season Outlook USC Aiken’s men’s soccer team concluded last season by winning their final three regular season contests. One of the victories was a 3-2 win over nationally 13th-ranked Anderson at the “Pacer Pit.” The Pacers in the three-match winning streak outscored their opposition 113. The Pacers enter the 2010 season hoping to continue the success that they corralled to finish the 2009 campaign. USC Aiken mentor Ike Ofoje believes that he has the cast to accomplish not only this, but compete for a Peach Belt Conference crown. “What I like most about my team is their spirit,” noted Ofoje. “The team unity is excellent. I felt like last year that we had strong spirit among the squad, but I believe it will be even better this season. We just have a grouping of players who enjoy being around one another.” That spirit towards the Pacer cause should enable a team that welcomes back 12 letterwinners to mesh with a talented if not exceptional incoming class that should continue USC Aiken’s upward progression into the upper echelon of the extremely tough Peach Belt Conference. The Pacers return five starters in total in 2010, but they will have to replace some key figures off the 2009 team that finished 7-11-1 overall

and 2-6 in the PBC. Leading the way for the Pacers in the 2010 season will be returning all-conference selection Troy Watson. The Kingston, Jamaica native led the Pacers last season with seven goals and seven assists. Ofoje points to the repertoire at his disposal as one of the main reasons the Pacers will ultimately be successful on the pitch in 2010. “What I am looking for most from our team is possession and depth on the bench,” said Ofoje. “Last year we had a strong starting 11, but not much of a bench. This year, I fully believe we have 18 players or more who can win games for us. That excites me.” The Pacers will begin the upcoming year lining up as they normally have in the past in regards to formation, but with a slight caveat. “We will be lining up in our traditional 4-4-2 formation this year, but at the same time one of the great things about my squad currently is that I believe we have players who can adapt to situations,” mused Ofoje. “I think we can change up styles to match other teams in certain situations throughout the course of the upcoming season. ” This ability to morph the playing style to fit to the opponents in the end may make the difference in the

team since according to Ofoje one of his team’s primary downfalls last year was possession in the midfield. “I think if we can improve our quickness and possession in the middle of the pitch then we will be more in control in contests,” remarked Ofoje. “We are really working hard at that as we prepare for the upcoming season. In our league, you have to be strong and in control in the midfield to compete.” Ofoje believes that his team still has a great deal to prove, but he is optimistic that things are going in the right direction. In fact, he closes his thoughts on the coming year quite simply: “I think we are going to surprise some people.”

Ike Ofoje is set for his 15th season at the helm of the USCA men’s soccer program. The season will mark the seventh season that Ofoje will focus all of his attention to just one team. Ofoje started the women’s program at USC Aiken in 1997 and served as its head coach for eight seasons, compiling a record of 51-77-10. In 2005, however, Sue Vodicka was hired as the program’s first full-time women’s soccer coach. With the addition of Vodicka, Ofoje took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations. In his 14 seasons at the helm of the Pacers, he has an 80-158-17 overall record. The 2009 USC Aiken men’s soccer team closed out their regular season with three consecutive victories, capped off by a 3-2 upset win over 13th-ranked Anderson at the Pacer Pit. USC Aiken outscored their opponents 11-3 during the three-game winning streak. Overall, the Pacers finished the 2009 campaign 7-11-1 (2-6 PBC), earning a trip to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The Pacers concluded their season with a 2-0 loss to league rival Lander in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer Championships. Ofoje guided the Pacers to a 5-111 record in the 2008 campaign. One season earlier he led the Pacers to a 7-9-2 record in 2007, including a 4-2 mark in Peach Belt play which left them in a three-way tie for second place. The squad was led by junior Kofi Akyere, who was the first player under Ofoje to win PBC co-Player of the Year honors and be named an Honorable Mention AllAmerican. In 2006, Ofoje guided the Pacers to their most successful season in the program’s history. After being picked to finish seventh in the Peach Belt Conference, USCA had fewer losses than any other PBC team and fell just one point short of the league title. The Pacers set school records in both overall and conference wins, finishing the season with a 12-6-2 record (4-1-2 in the PBC), including a 2-1 win over Lander on October 4. The Pacers also achieved their firstever national ranking and appeared in the PBC Championship game. The rest of the league’s coaches took notice, naming Ofoje the 2006 PBC Coach of the Year. The 2001 campaign, in which the

Pacers finished 10-9-0 in Ofoje’s sixth season on the USCA sideline, marked the program’s first winning season since 1994 and only its second winning record since joining the NCAA Division II in 1990. Ofoje’s 2002 team reached another milestone. The Pacers entered that year’s Peach Belt Conference Tournament as the seventh seed, but Andre Joseph’s game winner with four minutes to play lifted USCA to a stunning 2-1 upset over eighth-ranked and second seeded North Florida and gave the program its firstever PBC Tournament victory. On the women’s side, after struggling through a 1-14-1 inaugural season in 1997, Ofoje led the Lady Pacers to a 45-39-7 record over the next five seasons. In 2002, the Lady Pacers scored the program’s first-ever win over a top 10 team, a 2-1 overtime victory over ninthranked Francis Marion University. Ofoje, a 1991 graduate of New Hampshire College, was a two-time NCAA Division II All-American and was named Most Valuable Player for his 1989 NCAA National Championship team. As a player at New Hampshire College, Ofoje led his teams to a 7215-4 record and four NCAA Tournament appearances. He totaled 58 goals, 36 assists, and 152 points in 75 career matches. He owns the school record for most career points, is tied for most career assists and is a member of the New Hampshire College Hall of Fame. After graduation, Ofoje played professionally in the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues for the Boston Storm for two seasons. Ofoje also played on his native country of Nigeria’s junior and senior national teams. While coaching at St. Joseph’s High School in Huntington, W.Va., Ofoje earned his Master’s degree in Sports Management at Marshall University. Ofoje, who holds a USSF “A” coaching license, served as assistant women’s soccer coach at Illinois State University before arriving at USC Aiken.
