Five-Time PBC Tournament Champions (1991, 1992, 1995, 2006, 2007) • 2006 & 2007 NCAA Division II Tournament Participants

The University of South Carolina Aiken The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for

students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA

received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

The Peach Belt Conference Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. History: Now entering its 21st year of existence in 2010-11, the Peach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 29 national championships and 25 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06 while Armstrong Atlantic State women’s tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 2009-10 season was among the most successful the league has seen in its 20 years. AASU won their third consecutive women’s tennis national championship while the Augusta State men’s basketball team continued their unprecedented run with a third straight appearance in the Elite Eight. Flagler became the first PBC volleyball team to reach the NCAA Final Four. The North Georgia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation in every regular-season softball poll while, in all, five PBC programs were ranked #1 in the nation (GCSU men’s golf, ASU men’s basketball, AASU men’s and women’s tennis). The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt expanded to 13 members, the most the league has ever had, with the additions of Montevallo and Flagler. The two schools also returned a league presence to Florida and broke new ground in Alabama. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. Dr. Kendall Blanchard, president of Georgia Southwestern State University, began the first of his two-year term as the league president in July of 2010. The conference currently holds

championships in 13 sports, six for men and seven for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf.

The USC Aiken Convocation Center

The USC Aiken Convocation Center Home of the Pacers

As USC Aiken Athletics has grown, its place in context of the University as a whole has evolved. With heightened importance comes the need for new tools for success. The Convocation Center, opened in April 2007, is the grandest tool yet that will equip the Pacer programs with opportunities to succeed. A vision some 15 years in the making, the construction of the facility came to fruition only because of the dedicated, hard work of campus and community leaders. Funding for the $17 million, 100,000 square foot facility came from both public and private sources. With a groundbreaking ceremony on December 9, 2005, construction in earnest began with a 14-month

time table laid out for the project’s completion. With China Construction as the builders of the project, Chinese National Television was on hand for the historic groundbreaking. In addition to giving the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs a state-of-the-art facility in which to practice and play, the athletic department as a whole has expanded space and modern offices in which to operate. Visitors to the building are greeted initially by the beautiful John C. Troutman Family Lobby. Highlighted by the Lew Perkins Wall of Champions. The lobby works as a museum of Pacer greatness both past and present. The Wall of Champions is a dedication to Lew

Perkins, the former USC Aiken basketball coach and athletic director and current Director of Athletics at Kansas University, and is a timeline of USC Aiken athletics. The lobby also includes trophy cases dedicated to each sport, and a hanging banner featuring a prominent student-athlete from each sport’s past. The main arena has a seating capacity of 3,600 for athletic events. The men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams all practice and hold home events in the arena, which has state-of-the-art sound and scoreboard systems. One practice floor is located on each side of the arena above the main competition floor, allowing the possibility for up to three teams to practice simultaneously. Overlooking the main competition floor is the VIP room, which gives the department a facility with a beautiful backdrop to host meetings, conferences, or banquets. In addition, the building consists of eight spacious locker rooms, including dedicated ones for the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and volleyball teams. The first weight training facility dedicated to the student-athlete is also housed next to the athletic training room.

USC Aiken Athletic Facilities

J.H. Satcher Field

J.H. Satcher Field is conveniently located near the heart of the USC Aiken campus, J.H. Satcher Field includes a climate-controlled pressbox, a conession stand, coaches’ offices and a locker room at the field. Included among the 1,000 seats are 500 seats with backs. The playing surface is composed of clay and sod.

Pacer Path Cross Country Course

Pacer Path is a four-mile-long, 15-feet-wide grass and earth multipurpose fitness trail, which has been built on property adjacent to the Convocation Center. Pacer Path has been built to NCAA standards and it is the only course at a Peach Belt Conference School.

“Pacer Pit” Soccer Field

This 700-seat complex has provided a solid backdrop for a number of Pacer victories. Since 2001, 27 of the 38 victories for the men have come at “Pacer Pit.” In the same period, 24 of the Lady Pacers’ 37 wins have occurred at the friendly confines.

Palmetto Golf Club

Palmetto Golf Club was founded in 1892 and is recognized as the fourth oldest golf course in the United States. In 1934 Alister McKenzie, the Scottish golf architect who built Augusta National, redesigned the greens. The clubhouse was built in 1902 by the same man who built the Boston Gardens, Stanford White. White constructed an exact scale model of the clubhouse at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island, N.Y.

Roberto Hernandez Stadium

The 1,000-seat, state-of-the-art stadium features a beautiful grass and clay surface with all the amenities of a top-notch Division I ballpark. A clubhouse, players’ lounge, coaches’ offices, modern press box with separate radio broadcast booth, training facilities, top-of-the-line scoreboard with message center, and 850 covered seats are among the highlights. The crown jewel of the facility is the Roberto Hernandez Hall of Fame Room.

Tennis Complex

The complex, which is adjacent to J.H. Satcher Field, includes seven lighted courts, a coach’s office, and a clubhouse. Spectators can choose whether to sit next to the court of their choice, or in the bleachers located next to the number one singles court.

Coach Cox calls a play during a match last season.

Glenn Cox completed his second season in charge of the USC Aiken volleyball program in the 2009 season. In two seasons under Cox, the Pacers have compiled a record of 31-33. Prior to joining USC Aiken, Cox had spent the previous six seasons as the head coach at the Savannah College of Art & Design, a NAIA institution in Savannah, Ga. The 2009 USC Aiken volleyball team finished the season with a 1518 record, going 5-9 in Peach Belt Conference play. USC Aiken hosted the 2009 PBC Volleyball Championships for the first time in their new home arena, the Convocation Center. The Pacers entered the tournament as the fifth seeded team. USC Aiken acquired victories over both of the teams who would eventually meet for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship. The Pacers were the only team to beat Flagler in league play as the Pacers downed the Saints, 3-2, at the Convocation Center on Friday, Sept. 18. Just one day later, USC Aiken was one of just two teams in the Peach Belt Conference to down the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic during the regular season, acquiring a 3-1 win over AASU on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Convocation Center. The Pacers were ranked as high as No. 3 in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings. USC Aiken was the second highest ranked Peach Belt Conference squad with Flagler ranked one spot higher than the Pacers in second. Armstrong Atlantic was one spot lower than the Pacers in fourth. The Pacers won eight of 10 games from Sept. 4 through Sept. 19. Flagler would advance all the way to the Final Four of the 2009 NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship. In his six seasons at SCAD, Cox led the Bees to a 141-82 overall record. In his final four seasons, his teams won four-straight Florida Sun Conference championships, won four-straight NAIA Region XIV titles and advanced to the NAIA National Volleyball Championships

Six-Time PBC Regular Season Champions (1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 2006, 2007)

in Columbia, Mo., four times. In his final season at SCAD, Cox guided the Bees to a 24-12 record and the 15th seed in the NAIA National Tournament. In 2006, SCAD went 26-13 and was ranked as high as eighth nationally. Cox claimed the NAIA Region XIV Coach of the Year for his final four seasons. In the classroom, the Bees earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association/Game Plan Team Academic Award in every season under Cox. Prior to his time at SCAD, Cox served as the head volleyball coach at Athens Academy in Athens, Ga. His teams won back-to-back undefeated region championships and held an overall record of 69-27 (.719). Athens Academy finished third in the Georgia High School Association’s Class AA/A State Tournament in 2000 and second in the 2001 tournament. Before becoming a head coach, Cox served two seasons as an assistant coach at Valdosta Sate University, an NCAA Division II institution in Valdosta, Ga. In his two seasons, the Blazers went 61-15 in recording two third-place finishes in the Gulf South Conference. Cox had a successful career as a professional beach volleyball player, recording 43 open victories while competing on several national tours. Cox also has an impressive indoor career as he was a member of the NCAA Division I defending national championship 1992 Long Beach State volleyball team. Just one year earlier in 1991, Cox was a member of the prestigious Olympic Festival team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 1994 and received a master’s degree in health and kinesiology in 2000 from Valdosta State University. Cox and his wife, Julie, have two children, Elizabeth and Timothy.

2010 Season Outlook: Youth Movement 11

2010 Volleyball Outlook Youth movement

One of the biggest obstacles for

that those freshmen now have a year of

team, but to build and develop their own

of a strong returning nucleus of 12 that

coaches at any level is to build not just a program that can enjoy success for not

just one or two seasons, but for multiple years. Third-year head volleyball coach Glenn Cox has worked hard over the

past two seasons at the helm of young squads in hopes of building a solid future for his program.

The 2009 Pacer volleyball team

was one of the youngest squads in the

extremely tough Peach Belt Conference, featuring nine freshmen, eight of which saw action on the court during the

season. The team finished the season at

15-18, going 5-9 in league play while being ranked as high as third in the region

for much of the season; a true testament to the depth of talent the other coaches in the region saw in Coach Cox’s team.

The squad went on a season-high

five-match winning streak and acquired key victories over the two teams that eventually met in the NCAA Division

II Southeast Regional Championship

match. USC Aiken was the only team to best the Saints of Flagler in conference play and just one day later, the Pacers became one of two teams to defeat

the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State during the regular season.

“Last year’s team with a core of

freshmen proved themselves early by being ranked as high as third in the

region rankings for much of the season,” remarked Cox. “We
grew as a team

this past season and learned exactly

what type of
consistency it takes to win against the best teams in our region.

This
team will be seasoned and better

prepared to maintain the type of
 consistency needed to win championships.”

The best thing for Cox and the 2010

edition of the Pacer volleyball squad is

experience under their belts and are part welcomes in three freshmen and one transfer.

“The confidence and experience

that our group of returners have, plus

a
few new additions, have our expecta-

tions pretty high for this season,” stated Cox. He went on to add, “Last season we learned to deal with adversity the hard way. There is nothing that can

surprise us this year and our added

depth in certain positions will add to our abilities to perform as a unit.”

Cox recognizes that his squad “is

hungry for a championship,” but he

also recognizes that the core of the

team will “still be very young” as it will

be mostly comprised of freshmen and

sophomores. But his hopes are that the “returners will provide the consistency that will allow us a shot at making the

national tournament. We will have the

personnel to beat anyone and I am truly excited to see what 2010 brings.”

The head coach will look to his

upperclassmen of senior Megan Disney and juniors Chelsey Kight, Jessica

Loper and Susan MacClary to lead the

team; however, some key sophomores

could step up big for the Pacers if given

the right situation. Power hitter and 2009 All-Peach Belt selection Shannon Byers led the team last season in kills just

ahead of Lindsay Mortenson who led

the team in both block assists and total blocks. Libero Samantha Lukralle set a new school record for digs in a season and setters Ashley Farwell and Alex

Petock will look to step in as the key setter for the Pacers.

Three freshmen and one transfer

join the squad adding depth to three

of Emily Maassen, Leah Rodgers, and Endea Ellison will look to compete for

playing time early on at the outside and

middle. Claire Patten, a libero who finds her way to USC Aiken after a year at

Mercer University, will look to add depth to that position behind sophomores

Lukralle and KD Almaraz, but will look to challenge for playing time.

“I have high expectations for this

whole team and expect that many of our

top performers from last season will step up and take on the role as our spark

plugs with the loss of some of our senior captains,” remarked Cox. “I also foresee some of the new comers jumping into

the spotlight with the tremendous ability that exists within that group. When the core group of a team is as young as

ours, it is always interesting to see how leaders emerge.”

The youthful and richly talented

group will look to build on the successes from the previous seasons in hopes of seeing gains on the court in 2010.

The Pacers have won the regular

season Peach Belt Conference crown six times (1991, 1992, 1993, 1995,

2006, 2007) and will look to capitalize on their roster full of depth of strong talent and youth to capture another title.
