USC AIKEN CONVOCATION CENTER Home of the Pacers
As USC Aiken Athletics has grown, its place in the context of the University as a whole has evolved. With heightened importance comes the need for new tools for success. The Convocation Center, opened in April 2007, is the grandest tool yet that will equip the Pacer programs with opportunities to succeed. A vision some 15 years in the making, the construction of the facility came to fruition only because of the dedicated, hard work of campus and community leaders. As everyone bought into the idea, the resources were raised to make this dream a reality. Funding for the 17 million dollar, 100,000 square foot facility came from both public and private sources.

USC AIKEN With a groundbreaking ceremony on December 9, 2005, construction in earnest began with a 14-month time table laid out for the project’s completion. With China Construction as the builders of the project, Chinese National Television was on hand for the historic groundbreaking. In addition to giving the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs a new, state-of-theart facility in which to practice and play, the athletic department as a whole has expanded space and modern offices in which to operate. Visitors to the building are greeted initially by the beautiful John C. Troutman Family Lobby. Highlighted by the Lew Perkins Wall of Champions, the lobby works as a museum of Pacer greatness both past and present. The Wall of Champions is a dedication to Lew Perkins, the former USC Aiken basketball coach and athletic director and former Director of Athletics at Kansas University, and is a timeline of USC Aiken athletics. The lobby also includes trophy cases dedicated to each sport, and a hanging banner featuring a prominent student-athlete from each sport’s past. The main arena has a seating capacity of 3,600 for athletic events. The men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams will all practice and hold home events in the arena, which has state-of-the-art sound and scoreboard systems. One practice floor is located on each side of the arena above the main competition floor, allowing the possibility for up to three teams to practice simultaneously. Overlooking the main competition floor is the VIP room, which gives the department a facility with a beautiful backdrop to host meetings, conferences, or banquets. In addition, the building consists of eight spacious locker rooms, including dedicated ones for the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and volleyball teams. The first weight training facility dedicated to the student-athlete is also housed in the Convocation Center next to athletic training room.

History: Now entering its 21st year of existence in 2010-11, the Peach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 29 national championships and 25 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight
straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06 while Armstrong Atlantic State women’s tennis has captured four titles overall. The 2009-10 season was among the most successful the league has seen in its 20 years. Armstrong Atlantic State won their third consecutive women’s tennis national championship while the Augusta State men’s basketball team continued their unprecedented run with a third straight appearance in the Elite Eight. Flagler became the first PBC volleyball team to reach the NCAA Final Four. The North Georgia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation in every regular-season softball poll while, in all, five PBC programs were ranked #1 in the nation (GC men’s golf, ASU men’s basketball, AASU men’s and women’s tennis). The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball team is ranked 11th nationally in the 2010 Division II Bulletin Preseason Top 25. Defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona is the No. 1 team in the preseason poll. Rounding out the top five are Findlay, St. Cloud St., Indiana (Pa.) and Florida Southern. USC Aiken is the only Peach Belt Conference school ranked in the preseason top 25. Montevallo is listed as a team to watch. This is the second preseason accolade thus far for the Pacers, who were also tabbed as a possible breakthrough team in NCAA Division II by the 2010-11 Sporting News College Basketball Preview. “We are excited (to receive this ranking),” noted USC Aiken head men’s basketball coach Vince Alexander. “A lot is still to be determined, but we are looking forward to competing. We play in an extremely tough conference where we need to be ready night in and night out. I am just looking forward to getting things underway. It is always nice to be recognized, but we have a lot still to do, but we are looking forward to a great year.” USC Aiken men’s basketball program has won a school-record 72 games over the last three seasons. The 72 victories over the three-year span are the most in the Palmetto State among all levels of college basketball. Under the guidance of Alexander, USC Aiken has become a national force in NCAA Division II over the past three seasons. In addition to the victories, the 2007-08 USC Aiken men’s basketball team won the Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championship and the 2008-09 Pacer men’s basketball team advanced farther than any other squad in program history to the NCAA Division II “Sweet Sixteen.” The 2009-10 USC Aiken men’s basketball team claimed the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship. The Division II Bulletin has selected a preseason Top 25 every year since 1991 and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
The USC Aiken men’s basketball program has won a school-record 72 games over the last three seasons. The 72 victories over the three-year span are the most in the Palmetto State among all levels of college basketball. Under the guidance of head coach Vince Alexander, USC Aiken has become a national force in NCAA Division II over the past three seasons. The Pacers have accomplished a great deal in addition to claiming the 72 victories with the 2007-08 USC Aiken men’s basketball team winning the Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championship and the 2008-09 Pacer men’s basketball team advancing farther than any other squad in program history to the NCAA Division II “Sweet Sixteen.” The 200910 USC Aiken men’s basketball team claimed the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship. Things are not likely to change for USC Aiken’s opposition in the 2010-11 season as the Pacers enter the first full season of the next decade looking to continue their winning ways, while at the same time taking things to the next level. The Pacers are ready to do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals in the upcoming year. The only thing that the Pacers have been unable to acquire in the last three years is a spot in the Elite Eight with a chance to play for the national championship. Alexander believes that in the upcoming season he has a squad that has a chance to compete for a spot in the Elite Eight. “I am really looking forward to our returning players combining with our incoming stable of quality recruits,” noted Alexander. “With everything combined we could be a very dangerous team in the upcoming year. In fact, this could be the deepest team we have had since I have been here, and, more than likely, also the most athletic.” The 2010 Peach Belt Conference Tournament champions return eight letterwinners to the 2010-11 squad. The Pacers may lose three starters and five letterwinners overall, but they also welcome in a talented group of six transfers who should make the Pacers extremely potent from the outset of the 2010-11 season.

Faison. Faison averaged 12.7 points per game last season for the Pacers. Faison is part of a strong returning backcourt for the Pacers that also features returning starting point guard Sterling Council and Re’mon Nelson. Council hit a jumper to send the Pacers to victory over rival and then No. 6 Augusta State last season and he is expected to have a strong junior season in the 2010-11 season. As a true freshman in the 2009-10 season, Nelson really began to come into his own at the conclusion of the year. Nelson dealt out a team-best 101 assists last year. Nelson and Council, who will see time on the court together during different junctures, will battle for time at the point guard position with Brandon Shephard, who played in the final 20 games for the Pacers last year. Shephard is an explosive player whose knowledge of the Pacer system will make him an asset for the Pacer coaching staff in the upcoming year. Faison, who despite earning all-conference plaudits last season, came off the bench for most of the 2009-10 season. His talents still make him currently the logical choice at the shooting guard position in the season to come, but sophomore Ronald Zimmerman made significant strides down the stretch for the Pacers last season and should see more minutes in the coming year. The Pacers also welcome back redshirt freshman Jesse Seilern in the 2010-11 season. Seilern was injured just four games into the 2009-10 season, but he is back to full health and the coaches believe he is ready to take his game to the next level as evidenced by the fact that he was just recently named the Most Valuable Player for the Austria Junior National Team at a tournament that they were playing in during the middle of June of 2010. USC Aiken’s system requires players who happen to have skills at either shooting guard or small forward. The Pacers welcome four transfers to the 2010-11 squad, who have

the ability to do just that. Three players who should make an immediate impact for the Pacers are 6-foot-4 transfers Chase Holmes, Myles Holley and Kenny Manigault. Holmes joins the Pacers after two years at Presbyterian College, while Holley finds his way to Aiken after two years playing at Nebraska. Manigault, who can also play point guard, suited up last season for Wichita State and he has three years of eligibility remaining. Holmes was the leading scorer for the Blue Hose during the 2009-10 season. He averaged a team-best 13.6 points per game to go along with 4.2 boards per game. He hit upon 45.6 percent of his shots. Holmes had the best game of his career against North Carolina, scoring 29 points against the Tar Heels. He was 11-for-18 from the field in the contest. Holley was one of the most explosive athletes on the Cornhusker squad in 200910. The most prolific dunker on the team, Holley was limited to just 9.2 minutes per game over 22 contests, and primarily played in the post for the Huskers. Holley made the most of his time on the court as he averaged 3.4 points per game, while hitting 43.1 percent from the floor and added 2.0 rebounds. Holley scored a season-high 11 points in a two-point setback against nationally-ranked Baylor at home. He played a season-best 21 minutes and hit 5-of-11 shots from the field, including three mid-range jumpers and two dunks on strong baseline moves to help open up the Bears’ stifling zone defense. For his effort, Holley was rewarded with his only start of the season in the following game on the road at No. 14 Texas. He hit 1-of-5 shots from the field while playing 13 minutes against the Longhorns. During non-conference play, Holley became one of just three Huskers on the season to record double-figure rebounds in a contest. He posted a game-high 11 boards while adding seven points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field against Southern Utah for his best game before Big 12 play began. As a true freshman in 2009-10 at Wichita State, Manigault played in 16 games for the Shockers, averaging 7.2 minutes per game. Manigault posted 1.6 points and 0.9 rebounds per game for Wichita State last season. He shot 41.2 percent from the field. The 6-foot-4 guard was one of the most highly recognizable prep athletes in the Palmetto state in recent years as he was chosen as the 2008 South Carolina Independent Schools Association Player of the Year while helping his Pinewood Prep team to four consecutive state titles from 2006-09. He was chosen all-region from 2006-08 and allstate in both 2007 and 2008. Manigault averaged 14 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and five steals at

Frontcourt The Pacers have to replace two starters, including program stalwart Seth Leonard, down low in 2010-11, but they return two strong players and bring in one more to a 2010-11 team that should be a force to be reckoned with in the coming year. A player with a strong lineage, Kevin Willis returns to the fold for the Pacers in 2010-11 after closing the previous season playing extremely well. At 6-foot-8, Willis’ athleticism and solid motor is one of the reasons the Pacer coaching staff is expecting a strong follow-up to a 2009-10 season that saw him end the year as a member of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament All-Tournament team. Michael Technow, a 6-foot-9 junior, returns to the Pacer line-up in 2010-11. Technow had numerous bright spots last season, including posting three double-doubles. His best game came against No. 4 Florida Southern in late November of 2009. Technow brought down 10 rebounds to go along with a career-high 22 points. Joining the duo of returners in the frontcourt is 6-foot-10 center Alvin Brown, who joins the Pacers after two years at James Madison. Redshirted one year, Brown has three years of eligibility remaining. Brown played in 12 games for the Dukes in the 2009-10 season. His best game came against Longwood with five points, five rebounds and seven blocked shots. The Pacers will also welcome back Scotty Frater to the fold in the upcoming season. The 6-foot-8 SUNY Cobleskill transfer has not suited up for the Pacers since the 2005-06 season, but his return gives the Pacers more size and athleticism in the post.

There are teams that have a couple good seasons and then drop off, and then there are teams that keep building and become true programs. Under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Vince Alexander the University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball program has become a national force over the past few seasons. The USC Aiken men’s basketball program has won a school-record 72 games over the last three seasons. The 72 victories over the three-year span are the most in the Palmetto State among all levels of college basketball. USC Aiken’s total cumulative win total of 72 over the last three years leaves them two games ahead of Benedict, which has won 70 contests over the last three years. Clemson is not far behind in third place with 69 wins. College of Charleston is fourth with 65 victories over the last three years. The Pacers have not just won games over the last three years with the 2007-08 USC Aiken men’s basketball team winning the Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championship and the 2008-09 Pacer men’s basketball team advancing farther than any other squad in program history to the NCAA Division II “Sweet Sixteen.” The 2009-10 USC Aiken men’s basketball team claimed the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship. The Pacers have been especially strong under Alexander in the friendly confines of the Convocation Center where they are currently 37-6 during the regular season over the past three seasons. USC Aik-

Alexander and the Pacers participated in their third straight NCAA Division II Tournament in the 2009-10 season. Prior to USC Aiken’s first of now three consecutive NCAA trips, the Pacers last visit to the tournament came in 1998. In 2008-09 the Pacers advanced to their first ever “Sweet Sixteen.” The 2009-10 Pacers’ campaign ended with USC Aiken falling to Montevallo, 88-71, in the NCAA Southeast Regional semifinal for a trip to what would have been back-to-back “Sweet Sixteen” appearances. The Pacers nevertheless reached the Round of 32 in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history. The Pacers reached the Peach Belt Tournament Championship game for the third straight year and claimed their first PBC Tournament Championship since 1993 with a 65-60 victory over Montevallo. USC Aiken’s Byron Faison was named the 2010 PBC Tournament Most Valuable Player en route to the Pacers’ tournament title. Sophomore forward Kevin Willis was also named to the All-Tournament Team. Faison also garnered a PBC All-Conference selection at the conclusion of the regular season as a second-team member. USC Aiken is one of only three PBC teams to play in three straight PBC Tournament Championship games. Ironically, all three schools lost the first two championship games before winning in their respective third attempts. USC Aiken concluded the 2009-10 season with a 20-11 record, including three wins over Top 20 nationally ranked opponents. The Pacers have now claimed threestraight 20-win seasons becoming the first USC Aiken men’s team to do so in the university’s NCAA era. In the 2008-09 season, USC Aiken opened the year ranked as the No. 1 team in all of NCAA Division II by The Sporting News. The Pacers were ranked as high as second nationally during the regular season before ending the year with a 25-8 record overall. The Pacers advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game and the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year in the 2008-09 season. Under Alexander the Convocation Center has become the place to be on gameday’s in Aiken as USC Aiken’s men’s basketball team concluded the 2008-09 season ranked in the top 20 in the nation in total attendance, marking the second straight year that the Pacers had finished in the top 30 in the country. The Pacers had a total of 30,547 fans in the 2008-09 season visit the Convocation Center to average 2,036 fans per game. The mark moved the Pacers up 11 spots from 28th one year earlier when an average of 1,479 fans visited the Convocation Center during the 2007-08 season. USC Aiken

had the highest attendance in the Peach Belt Conference with rival Augusta State as the only other school in the league in the top 30. Augusta State averaged 1,688 fans per home game. The two rivals played in front of the largest crowd in USC Aiken athletic history when the Pacers downed the visiting Jaguars 78-74 on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009 in front of a crowd of 3,569 fans. The PBC average in 2008-09 was 939 fans per game, meaning that USC Aiken more than doubled the conference average for the second straight year. Alexander led the Pacers to a banner season in 2007-08, his third season as head coach of the USC Aiken men’s basketball program. Alexander engineered a remarkable turnaround as the Pacers finished the season with a 27-4 overall record, including a 19-1 conference record to claim the program’s second Peach Belt Conference regular season title. USCA broke numerous school records in 2007-08, including most wins (27), conference wins (19), consecutive wins (14), home wins (15), consecutive home wins (15), and most wins to start a season (9). The 2007-08 PBC Coach of the Year and South Atlantic District Coach of the Year, Alexander guided USCA to a final ranking of sixth. The Pacers advanced to the championship game of the PBC Tourney and earned the top seed in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional before falling to Clayton State 60-58. Alexander guided the Pacers to a combined 15 wins in his first two years with the program. The Pacers were 15-44 in his first two years overall. Since then, Alexander has led USC Aiken to a 72-22 record and its highest regular season ranking in school history at No. 2 earlier in the 2008-09 season. Alexander, who was 89-74 at Mansfield prior to taking the job at USCA in 200506, is now 176-141 all-time as an NCAA Division II head coach. Prior to the start of the 2007-08 season, Alexander was -14 in his career ledger with a combined record of 104-118. He now owns a +35 overall record. He is 87-67 as the head mentor of the Pacer men’s basketball program. While Alexander and his team went through a tough season in 2006-07 marred by injuries and roster shakeups, the coach did reach a milestone when the Pacers beat Allen 92-60 on Dec. 2, 2006, for his 100th career victory. Alexander joined the USC Aiken community in June of 2005 after serving as head coach for the previous six seasons at Mansfield University, a NCAA Division II institution in Mansfield, Pa. He became the school’s seventh person to sit at the helm and third since moving to the NCAA Division II ranks in 1990-91. Alexander was hired after standing out in the hiring process to the USC Aiken administration. “We interviewed an exceptional pool of candidates for this position; however, Vince stood out from the group as a stellar coach,” said USC Aiken Chancellor Dr. Tom Hallman at a reception to welcome Alexander to campus. “I spoke to several people, including [Mansfield’s] president, who had nothing but respect for Vince personally and professionally.” In his time at Mansfield, Alexander led the Mountaineers to an 89-74 record, the 2005 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Championship,

The PSAC does not crown a regular season champion, but Alexander’s 2004-05 squad finished with the best conference record in the 14-team league. The Mountaineers went 10-2 on their way to the Eastern Division Championship. The team finished the season with an overall record of 18-11. All those accomplishments are even more impressive considering Mansfield was picked to finish fourth in the Eastern Division. Alexander took over the reigns of the Mansfield program in 1999 after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at the university. His first team finished 13-13 and his

The Mountaineers average of 84.7 points per game also ranked 12th in Division II. At Mansfield, Alexander produced 10 All-Conference players, six First-Team selections and four Second-Team choices, and the 2003 PSAC Eastern Rookie of the Year. Before arriving at Mansfield as an assistant, Alexander was the head basketball coach at William Penn High School in York, Pa., as well as Dean of Students for the York City School District. During his two-year tenure as head basketball coach, he guided William Penn to an overall record of 40-15, including a 25-5 mark during the 1996-97 season. His 199596 team was the YAIAA co-champion and the York County runner-up. The 1996-97 squad won both the YAIAA and York County titles, and Alexander earned York County Coach of the Year honors. Prior to his stint at William Penn, Alexander was a physical education instructor and head basketball coach at U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City, Okla., from 1992-94 where his teams posted a 29-10 mark. Alexander’s 1994-95 team advanced to the Oklahoma Regional Finals, and he was selected the 1993 Coach of the Year in the Oklahoma City League. Alexander earned his Associate of Arts Degree in physical education from Blinn College (Texas) in 1987. At Blinn, he was All-Conference and an All-Region selection. He then attended Oklahoma Baptist University where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education and Recreation in 1989. He served as the team captain for two seasons. Head coach Vince Alexander and the University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball team continued to build upon the success of the previous two seasons in their 2009-10 campaign, shattering the school record for wins over a three-year span with 72 wins during the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. Alexander and the Pacers participated in their third straight NCAA Division II Tournament. A junior, Faison also garnered a PBC All-Conference selection at the conclusion of the regular season as a second-team member. The Pacers have now claimed three-straight 20-win seasons becoming the first USC Aiken men’s team to do so in the university’s NCAA era. The Convocation Center, home to USC Aiken basketball since 2007-08, remained one of the toughest venues in the country for opponents to earn a road victory as the Pacers improved to 35-6 during the regular season inside the friendly confines since the doors opened in 07-08.
