Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144
acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a

USC AIKEN CONVOCATION CENTER Home of the Pacers
As USC Aiken Athletics has grown, its place in the context of the University as a whole has evolved. With heightened importance comes the need for new tools for success. The Convocation Center, opened in April 2007, is the grandest tool yet that will equip the Pacer programs with opportunities to succeed. A vision some 15 years in the making, the construction of the facility came to fruition only because of the dedicated, hard work of campus and community leaders. As everyone bought into the idea, the resources were raised to make this dream a reality. Funding for the 17 million dollar, 100,000 square foot facility came from both public and private sources.

With a groundbreaking ceremony on December 9, 2005, construction in earnest began with a 14-month time table laid out for the project’s completion. With China Construction as the builders of the project, Chinese National Television was on hand for the historic groundbreaking. In addition to giving the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs a new, state-of-the-art facility in which to practice and play, the athletic department as a whole has expanded space and modern offices in which to operate. Visitors to the building are greeted initially by the beautiful John C. Troutman Family Lobby. Highlighted by the Lew Perkins Wall of Champions, the lobby works as a museum of Pacer greatness both past and present. The Wall of Champions is a dedication to Lew Perkins, the former USC Aiken basketball coach and athletic director and former Director of Athletics at Kansas University, and is a timeline of USC Aiken athletics. The lobby also includes trophy cases dedicated to each sport, and a hanging banner featuring a prominent student-athlete from each sport’s past. The main arena has a seating capacity of 3,600 for athletic events.

History: Now entering its 21st year of existence in 2010-11, the Peach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 29 national championships and 25 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight
straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06 while Armstrong Atlantic State women’s tennis has captured four titles overall. The 2009-10 season was among the most successful the league has seen in its 20 years. Armstrong Atlantic State won their third consecutive women’s tennis national championship while the Augusta State men’s basketball team continued their unprecedented run with a third straight appearance in the Elite Eight. Flagler became the first PBC volleyball team to reach the NCAA Final Four. The North Georgia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation in every regular-season softball poll while, in all, five PBC programs were ranked #1 in the nation (GC men’s golf, ASU men’s basketball, AASU men’s and women’s tennis). The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt expanded to 13 members, the most the league has ever had, with the additions of Montevallo
Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.

Mike Brandt enters his ninth season as the USC Aiken Women’s Basketball Coach in the 2010-11 season. Under the guidance of Brandt the USC Aiken women’s basketball program has become one of the better programs in the extremely tough Peach Belt Conference. Under Brandt, USC Aiken has won a schoolrecord 15 or more games in each of the last four seasons. The Pacers have claimed 20 or more victories in three of the last four seasons. Brandt and the University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team finished the 2009-10 season with a 15-13 record. The Pacers closed out the 2009-10 season by winning nine of their last 12 games. USC Aiken’s Peach Belt Conference record of 10-8 earned the Pacers the No. 3 seed in the PBC East Division. The Pacers’ season ended in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Marvin Vanover Peach Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Championship with a 75-64 loss to nationally-ranked No. 17 Francis Marion. Senior forward Catherine Cain (Dayton, Ohio/Ohio University) was named to the PBC Women’s
All-Conference Team as a second team selection. The Convocation Center, home to USC Aiken basketball since 2007-08, once again proved to be a tough place for opponents to earn a victory as the Pacers improved their record inside the friendly confines of the facility to 31-11 during the regular season over the last three years. In 2008-09, USC Aiken advanced all the way to the PBC Tournament championship game. The Pacers dropped their bid for their first PBC Tournament championship, but they were awarded for a strong 2008-09 season with a trip to the their third ever NCAA Division II Tournament. USC Aiken eventually bowed out in the first round of the tournament to regional finalist and PBC rival Francis Marion. Despite the loss in the first round of USC Aiken’s second trip to the Division II Tournament under Brandt, the Pacers’ 2008-09 season was one of the brightest in school history. The coaching veteran reached the century mark of 100 NCAA Division II wins with a 77-67 home win over UNC Pembroke on February 18, 2008. Brandt enters the 2010-11 season having won 393 games as a head coach. Adding his high school coaching and men’s college assistant games, Brandt has been on the winning side of the scoreboard over 500 times. Brandt will be the first to admit he loves to win games – but he will also emphasize – there is more to it than winning games. He prides his coaching in helping young people develop themselves in all walks of life. It is evident in his coaching

that he tries to instill the basic life fundamentals of hard work, honesty, academic integrity, discipline, and strong personal character. Those qualities have proven to be a winner for both USCA and the mentor. Both seem to be a nice fit, as each one compliments the other. USCA and Mike Brandt emphasize many of the same traits in their philosophy and teachings. In coaching circles, Brandt is regarded as one of the leading coaches that will teach his team to run the Flex Offense. The Flex is a disciplined and continuity offense that most teams fear trying to defend. Many of the ‘locals’ enjoy watching the flow of the offense and can see the play developing prior to witnessing a great back-cut for a lay-up or a wide open three-point shot for a shooter. There are many options for players as they run the offense and it is usually easy to spot the players that have experienced success executing that playing style. On the defensive side of the court, Brandt stresses aggressive person to person defense. He also will mix up the pressure with a soft zone press and even incorporate a half court trap at times. Because of his strategy of “mixing things up,” his teams have consistently ranked at the top of the scoring defense category. In Brandt’s 21 years of college coaching, his teams have reached the magical “20-wins” 11 times. Only two of those years have they finished below .500. Prior to coming to Aiken, S.C., Brandt coached for 13 years in his hometown of Sterling, Colo. at Northeastern Junior College. While there, Brandt finished with a string of six twenty-win seasons, climaxed by a trip to the NJCAA National Basketball Championships. His 2001-02 Plainswomen team finished 9th in the country – losing in overtime in the opening round to the eventual National Champions. Preparation is a key to coaching, and the Pacer guru tends to get his teams to consistently improve and finish

strong as both the game and season goes on. As confirmation, Brandt’s Pacers enter the upcoming year owning a 68-3 record over the last four years when leading with five minutes to go in regulation. Challenging games are not a threat to Brandt either, as his teams at USCA are 11-17 overall against ranked opposition. The Pacers have won eight of their last 17 against ranked foes. Included are victories over the number one and number seven ranked teams in all Division II. A two game sweep over Division I competition in the 200708 season proves that Brandt and the Pacers are not afraid to accept any challenge. Overall, USC Aiken is 3-4 against Division I competition under Brandt, including 3-2 over the last three seasons. Numerous players of his have achieved All-American, All-Region, and All-Conference awards on the court. He also has had over 100 players earn academic honors as well, including national academic honors. Brandt attended Sterling High School (Sterling, Colo.) and participated in basketball, baseball and tennis. He finished his high school career as the all-time leader in scoring, assists, steals, free throw percentage and consecutive free throws. As point guard at Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College, Brandt helped set a school record winning 21 out of 22 of the last regular season games. After his two-year stint, Brandt stayed with the Sterling ties and attended Sterling College in Sterling, Kan. Brandt completed his playing career as being named a District X All-Star. Upon completion of his playing career, he began coaching in high school while earning his master’s degree in Education. Brandt and his wife Gina are the proud parents of son Jaiden Lee Patriot Brandt and daughter Amaura Lyn America Brandt. Gina is a professor at Augusta State University. Jaiden, a sophomore, is currently attending Augusta State University, while Amaura is a junior at Augusta Christian School. The parents also promote well-rounded children as both Jaiden (piano, voice) and Amaura (violin, piano) are also vested in the arts.

She has help to initiate the Pacers involvement in several community engagement activities. Hilbrich is a member of the WBCA and the WBCA Assistant Coaches Committee. She represented USC Aiken athletics as a participant in the 2008 NCAA Division II Leadership Academy in Naples, Fla. She will be a presenter at the WBCA Coaches Convention in Indianapolis in April of 2011.
Cindy Hilbrich completed her third season as assistant women’s basketball coach at USC Aiken in 2009-10. The Pacers have picked up 15 or more wins in all three of her seasons with the program, including backto-back 20-win seasons in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Last year, the USC Aiken women’s basketball team finished the 2009-10 season with a 15-13 record. The Pacers closed out the 2009-10 season by winning nine of their last 12 games. In the 2008-09 season, Hilbrich helped guide the Pacers to their third NCAA Division II Tournament appearance and their third consecutive 20-win season overall. The Pacers were ranked as high as seventh nationally. In Hilbrich’s first season on the sidelines in 2007-08, the Pacers finished with a 20-8 overall record. With a 13-7 mark in Peach Belt Conference play, the Pacers claimed a share of their third conference title. The Pacers finished the season with the best overall winning percentage among Peach Belt teams. The squad was ranked as high as 21st nationally and received votes all season. The 20 wins
included two against Division I foes and two others against ranked squads. Hilbrich came to the Pacers after spending the 2006-07 season as an assistant coach on the Mount Olive College staff, an NCAA Division II institution in North Carolina. She helped lead the Trojans to a 15-13 record in the competitive Conference Carolinas (formerly the CVAC). Prior to her time at Mount Olive, Hilbrich was a volunteer assistant coach at the University of WisconsinParkside in 2005-06. She has also been a coach in the high school ranks, serving as the junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant coach at Johnson Creek High School in Wisconsin from November 2003 to August 2005. NCAA Division II announced that the University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team will play host to a nationally televised women’s basketball game against Clayton State on Saturday, Jan. 15. The USC Aiken-Clayton State game on Saturday, Jan. 15 will tip-off at 12 p.m. from theConvocation Center. In addition to appearing on CBS College Sports, the game also will available through NCAA Productions syndication affiliates (such as regional sports networks and local TV stations) and will be videostreamed concurrently on NCAA.com. “This event is great for our university, community, and basketball program,” remarked USC Aiken head women’s basketball coach Mike Brandt. “To be able to have a game covered by CBS Sports Network – especially at home showcasing the Convocation Center – is priceless! I hope we can get one of our usual outstanding crowds and really showcase USC Aiken basketball!” The nationally televised game at the Convocation Center will be a special “Pack the House” day with the Pacers aiming to have the arena completely sold out. To help accomplish this goal, the USC Aiken athletic department will be pre-selling 2,500 tickets to the game. Tickets will be sold for a special discount rate of just $2. The contest will be the first game of a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader at the Convocation Center with the nationally 11th-ranked Pacer men slated to take on the Clayton State men immediately following the women’s contest at approximately 2:30 p.m. The men’s game unfortunately will not be televised, but it will be able to be followed live on USC Aiken’s official athletic website at www.PacerSports.com. For tickets to the nationally-televised game, please call the USC Aiken athletic department at (803) 641-3486. Division II and CBS College Sports will team to televise a total of 10 men’s and women’s 2011 Division II basketball games of the week beginning Saturday, January 8. The contests, divided equally among men’s and women’s games, will feature teams from 10 Division II conferences. This round includes nine campuses and 19 institutions that have not previously been featured on the Division II package, which began in 2006. “This schedule completes our five-year agreement in which we have featured more than 100 different schools and broadcast national television games from more than 50 Division II communities,” said Division II Vice President Mike Racy. The Game of the Week format will highlight one game each week, except for doubleheaders Jan. 22 and 29. CBS College Sports also will carry the semifinal games of the Division II Men’s Basketball Championship, which will be played March 24 in Springfield, Mass. CBS will carry the championship game March 26. Games are selected by the Division II media advisory group, which includes presidents, athletics directors and conference commissioners.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team is presently in the midst of one of the greatest stretches in school history as the Pacers have collected a school-record four consecutive winning seasons. Still the Pacers want more. USC Aiken entered last season having won 20 or more games in a school-best three straight years. The 2009-10 Pacers were unable to keep the streak alive, finishing at a very respectable 15-13. USC Aiken played well down the stretch, claiming a victory in nine of its last 12 outings on the season. The Pacers eventually ended the year with a 10-8 record in the Peach Belt Conference. One year removed from an NCAA Regional appearance in 2009, USC Aiken expects to be in the 2011 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. “Last year our 15-13 record was kind of hard to accept,” noted USC Aiken ninth-year head coach Mike Brandt. “Looking back on it there were some games we should have won, but either way you move on and get ready for the next year. Our expectation is to make the NCAA Tournament. I know our team will be extremely disappointed with anything less, and realistically this year we have a much better chance of accomplishing that goal.” Brandt’s assertion that the Pacers have a tremendous chance of returning to the NCAA Regional is not without merit as the Pacers return eight letterwinners along with four fantastic newcomers. “Whenever you begin a new year, obviously you have high expectations,” mused Brandt. “I expect not only our returning players, but our newcomers to have a huge impact on the upcoming season.” Brandt believes that “any team is only as good as its guards,” which is one of the reasons he expects so much from his squad in 2010-11 with a senior-laden backcourt led by Nakia Pinkney (Orangeburg, S.C./OrangeburgWilkinson) and Triahna Harris (Springfield, Va./West Springfield). Pinkney averaged 7.5 points per game last year, while Harris concluded

her junior campaign averaging 5.3 points and 4.86 assists per outing. Harris’ assist numbers leave the Pacer floor general in the top 10 in school history in the category entering her final season in a Pacer uniform. The duo is one of five Pacers returning at the guard position with Mia Antoine (Stone Mountain, Ga./Dominion Christian), Brittany Bowen (Ellicot City, Md./Mt. Hebron) and Daniela Tarailo (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) returning for their sophomore seasons. All three saw significant minutes for the Pacers last season with Bowen making four starts during Peach Belt Conference play. Joining the five Pacer guards this year is former Aiken High standout Lexy Williams. Williams returns to Aiken after spending her freshman year at Georgia Southern. Williams did not participate in a contest last year as she was redshirted, meaning she will have four years to suit up as a Pacer. Williams was a four-year starter at Aiken High School. She was the leading scorer for the Hornets during her junior and senior campaigns. She was team captain and Most Valuable Player both seasons, while also claiming all-conference plaudits both of the seasons. She was invited to play in the Georgia-South Carolina all-star game at the conclusion of her prep career. Deandra Schirmer (Holton, Kan./Cloud County CC) is the lone Pacer starter returning in the frontcourt. Schirmer started 27 games for USC Aiken in her first season as a Pacer in 2009-10, finishing the year averaging 5.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per contest. Junior Hannah DeGraffinreed (Raleigh, N.C./Merrimack College) started 11 games for USC Aiken last season early on, but she only made two starts during league play. The first player off the bench in most games, DeGraffinreed was second on the team last year in points per game at 10.1 per outing. She averaged 6.0 rebounds per game. Lindsay Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn./E.O. Smith) is the final Pacer forward returning. A threat beyond the arc, Sundberg enters her junior season 12th all-time in school history in threepoint field goals made.

Brandt felt that one of the areas that needed to be addressed in the offseason was the frontcourt, which is why he brought in one transfer and two prep standouts to aid the three returners in the post. A 6-foot-5 sophomore center, Tiffani Moody (Raleigh, N.C./Ohio Valley University) has three years of eligibility remaining. Moody played her high school basketball for Garner High School. During her senior year at Garner, Moody averaged six points, seven rebounds and three blocks per game. She was selected first team All-Conference in the Greater Neuse Conference for her efforts over the course of the season. Moody helped lead her high school team to back-to-back regular season conference championships and a tournament championship during her time at Garner. For her AAU team, the Garner Flames, she helped guide the team to the Eastern Regional Championship in 2007 and a fourth place finish in the state of North Carolina. During her freshman season at Ohio Valley in 2008-09, Moody averaged seven points and seven boards. She also led the Fighting Scots in field goal percentage and blocked shots during her freshman campaign. She was redshirted during the 2009-10 season so she will have three full years of eligibility remaining with the Pacers. Inked during the early signing period, Kayla Harris (Raleigh, N.C./ Wakefield) and Porsha Martin (Douglasville, Ga./South Paulding) are both expected to have tremendous freshman campaigns for USC Aiken. Both bring size and a strong prep resume. Overall, Brandt is extremely pleased with his team as they prepare to enter the upcoming year. “I feel like that once again we were able to bring in four players that fit into our team and system,” said Brandt. “They are already gelling with our returners and the team seems to have great chemistry. I believe that is an important team aspect that will ultimately lead to a strong season.”

USC AIKEN USC Aiken Women’s Basketball Community Engagement
One of the cornerstones of the USC Aiken women’s basketball program (as well as a Division II initiative) is Community Engagement and Service projects. There are numerous reasons for staying involved in the community, which include forming a bond with the youth in and around Aiken, helping and serving others that are less fortunate, recognizing others for their accomplishments and hard work (breast cancer survivors, teachers and professors, Girl Scouts), and showing appreciation for the continued support that we receive from the community. The Pacers have been involved in several events throughout the Aiken community, including starting the Junior Pacers. The Junior Pacers program was started in 2008 as a way for children in the community to become involved with the Lady Pacers. Junior Pacers are invited to participate in the Pacers’ Meet & Greet Day, have lunch with the Pacers, visit the locker room after a game, and will receive a Junior Pacers t-shirt. Other Community Engagement and Service Activities: * Reading to the 4th grade at Aiken Elementary * Honoring education professionals at half-time during
American Education Week * Walking the dogs at the S.P.C.A. * Playing games with children at Helping Hands * Participating in Upward Evaluation * Volunteering at the United Way Cook-Off Fundraiser * Volunteering at the Buddy Walk * Participating in a benefit for Paris Marchant * Hosting Girl Scouts Day * Hosting an Ovarian Cancer game to spread awareness * Hosting our annual Pink Zone game and honoring survivors of breast cancer at half-time
“I enjoy doing community service because I love seeing the smiles on peoples’ faces. When we go out into the community it’s no longer about the Lady Pacers, it’s about the people we are helping.” – Triahna Harris

“I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without assistance from community members. I try to take advantage of any chance I get to give back to the community that has done so much to help me.” – Deandra Schirmer
“I like doing community service because the people from our community are very strong supporters of this team. Our service to them is just a small way to say that we REALLY appreciate what they do for us. ” – Nakia Pinkney

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 49
Head coach Mike Brandt and the University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team finished the 2009-10 season with a 15-13 record. The Pacers closed out the 2009-10 season by winning nine of their last 12 games. USC Aiken’s Peach Belt Conference record of 10-8 earned the Pacers the No. 3 seed in the PBC East Division. The Pacers season ended in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Marvin Vanover Peach Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Championship with a 75-64 loss to nationally-ranked No. 17 Francis Marion. Senior forward Catherine Cain (Dayton, Ohio/Ohio University) was named to the PBC Women’s All-Conference Team as a second team selection. The Convocation Center, home to USC Aiken basketball since 200708, once again proved to be a tough place for opponents to earn a victory as the Pacers improved their record inside the friendly confines of the facility to 31-11 during the regular season over the last three years. Brandt’s team continued to display an impressive consistency in the 2009-10 campaign, closing down opponents when leading with five minutes to go in a contest. The Pacers enter the next year owning a 68-3 record over the last four years when leading with five minutes to go in regulation. USC Aiken’s 57-56 overtime win over nationally ranked No.14 Clayton State on Jan. 16, 2010 marked the Pacers’ first overtime victory since downing Newberry, 82-76, on Nov. 19, 2008. The Pacers also obtained a 63-51 win over nationally ranked No. 23 Lenoir-Rhyne on Dec. 17, 2009 in the Convocation Center. USC Aiken’s successes were not just on the court as 13 of 14 Pacers were on the USC Aiken Athletic Director’s Roll (3.0 or higher). The Pacers concluded the 2009-10 season with a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.442.
