USC AIKEN CONVOCATION CENTER Home of the Pacers

As USC Aiken Athletics has grown, its place in context of the University as a whole has evolved. With heightened importance comes the need for new tools for success. The Convocation Center, which opened in April 2007, is the grandest tool yet that will equip the Pacer programs with opportunities to succeed. A vision some 15 years in the making, the construction of the facility came to fruition only because of the dedication and hard work of campus and community leaders. Funding for the $17 million, 100,000 square foot facility came from both public and private sources. With a groundbreaking ceremony on December 9, 2005, construction in earnest began with a 14-month

USC AIKEN time table laid out for the project’s completion. With China Construction as the builders of the project, Chinese National Television was on hand for the historic groundbreaking. In addition to giving the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs a state-of-the-art facility in which to practice and play, the athletic department as a whole has expanded space and modern offices in which to operate. Visitors to the building are greeted initially by the beautiful John C. Troutman Family Lobby, highlighted by the Lew Perkins Wall of Champions. The lobby works as a museum of Pacer greatness, both past and present. The Wall of Champions is a dedication to Lew Perkins, the former USC Aiken basketball coach and athletic director and former Director of Athletics at the University of Kansas. The lobby also includes trophy cases dedicated to each sport and a hanging banner featuring a prominent student-athlete from each sport’s past. The main arena has a seating capacity of 3,600 for athletic events. The men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams all practice and hold home events in the arena, which has state-ofthe-art sound and scoreboard systems. One practice floor is located on each side of the arena above the main competition floor, allowing the possibility for up to three teams to practice simultaneously. Overlooking the main competition floor is the VIP room, which gives the department a facility with a beautiful backdrop to host meetings, conferences or banquets. In addition, the building consists of eight spacious locker rooms, including ones dedicated for the men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The first weight training facility exclusively for the student-athlete is also housed next to the athletic training room.

USC AIKEN A Look Ahead...

The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball team has won a school-record 89 games over the last four seasons. Most programs would be riding high on so many wins over the course of the last four seasons, but USC Aiken seventh-year head coach Vince Alexander is looking for his squad to reach even greater heights in the 2011-12 season. Last year, the Pacers ended the year without a spot in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional for the first time in four seasons. USC Aiken entered the 2010-11 season in the preseason top 15 nationally. The 2010-11 season in the end did not go quite as planned for the Pacers, but nevertheless the Pacers still finished second in the Peach Belt Conference East Division with a 10-8 mark in league play. USC Aiken concluded the year with a 17-10 record overall. USC Aiken finished the 2010-11 regular season having won six of their final eight games to figure in the regional rankings heading into the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Tournament. USC Aiken was upset by eventual Peach Belt Conference Tournament finalist UNC Pembroke on its home floor in the PBC Quarterfinals, leaving the Pacers just shy of claiming their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Not making the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year allowed Alexander and his coaching staff the time to evaluate everything and to that end, the Pacers have a stellar recruiting class joining a strong returning nucleus that features 2011-12 Sporting News Preseason AllAmerica selection and 2010-11 Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year Alvin Brown. Backcourt The 2011-12 Pacers return two starters in the backcourt in Re’mon Nelson and Jesse Seilern. A 5-foot-9 guard, Nelson is a two-year starter at point guard for the

USC AIKEN Pacers. The junior played in 27 games for the Pacers in the 2010-11 season, starting 24. He averaged 7.8 points per game and dished out a team-best 108 assists. A 6-foot-3 guard, Seilern was a Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year candidate who started 23 games. He averaged six points per game. The duo is joined in the backcourt by senior returners Sterling Council and Chase Holmes. Both Council and Holmes started games for the Pacers in the 2010-11 season. An absolute weapon at the charity stripe, Council, a 6-foot guard, averaged 7.6 points per game while shooting 82.1 percent from the free throw line. In 21 games due to injury, Holmes, a 6-4 guard, averaged 7.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. A 6-foot-1 guard, Ronald Zimmerman returns to the fold for the Pacers in the 2011-12 season after taking a year off from the program. Zimmerman, as a true freshman in USC Aiken’s Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship season in 2009-10, played in 14 games, averaging 1.9 points per game. Joining USC Aiken this season in the backcourt are transfers Jeremiah Pojah and Terrance Dent. Pojah, a senior, last played for East Texas Baptist in the 2008-09

USC AIKEN season, but the Houston, Texas native averaged 9.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game that season. At 6-foot-8, his size and ability to handle the basketball will pay huge dividends for the Pacers. A true shooting guard at 6-foot-2, Dent averaged 15.9 points per game for Laramie Community College in the 2010-11 season. He knocked down 119 three-pointers last year. Incoming prep standouts Nestor Carrion, Tolbert Holmes and Arlen Wiley will add depth to a strong Pacer backcourt that also includes redshirt freshman Marquett Carr. Frontcourt Brown is the lone returner to the USC Aiken frontcourt. Brown was the catalyst for a Pacer block party in the 2010-11 season that saw him finish fifth nationally in blocked shots per game with an average of 3.3 swats per game. The Pacers as a team in the 2010-11 season blocked an average of 6.1 shots per outing. The 6.1 blocks per game were the best in NCAA Division II. The 6-foot-10 Brown in only one year has already moved to third all-time in school history in career blocks with his 90 swats. Brown’s best game of the year came in USC Aiken’s 76-71 win over North Georgia at the Convocation Center on Jan. 17. The Pacer center broke the Peach Belt Conference record for blocked shots in a single game and finished with the third triple-double in school history in USC Aiken’s win over North Georgia. Brown finished his incredible night with 13 blocks, 13 points and 10 rebounds. His 13 blocks eclipsed the previous USC Aiken and Peach Belt Conference record of 12 blocks in a game that was formerly held

USC AIKEN by USC Aiken Hall of Famer Derek Moore, who swatted 12 shots in a contest with Coastal Carolina on Dec. 5, 1998. Brown will be joined in the frontcourt by three transfers and one incoming freshman who give the Pacers size and athleticism according to Alexander. Maurice Hubbard played in just four games for Ball State before leaving the program to transfer to USC Aiken. Hubbard will have two years of eligibility left. In 2009-10, the 6-foot-6 forward played in 28 games for Ball State, starting four. He averaged 1.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Rick Alderman joins the Pacers out of Concord University. A 6-foot-6 junior forward, Alderman played in 27 games for Concord in the 2010-11 season, starting 17. He averaged 14.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Joel Gierbolini played at Lon Morris College from 2008-10. He spent the first part of the 2010-11 season at Long Island University, playing in just five games. The 6-foot-8 junior forward played in just five games for Long Island before transferring to USC Aiken. He led Lon Morris in rebounding and blocked shots during his two seasons at the institution. Victor Bowden is a 6-foot-8 freshman center out of Chamblee High School in Stone Mountain, Ga.

USC AIKEN Head Coach Vince Alexander PERSONAL Hometown: Houston, Texas Date Hired: May 6, 2005 Family: Wife, Anita; son, Benjamin; daughter, Samantha DeNae`

There are teams that have a couple good seasons and then drop off and then there are teams that keep building and become true programs. Under the guidance of seventh-year head coach Vince Alexander, the University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball program has become a national force over the past few seasons. The USC Aiken men’s basketball program has won a school-record 89 games over the last four seasons. The Pacers have not just won games over the last four years with the 2007-08 USC Aiken men’s basketball team winning the Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championship and the 2008-09 Pacer men’s basketball team advancing farther than any other squad in program history to the NCAA Division II “Sweet Sixteen.” The 2009-10 USC Aiken men’s basketball team claimed the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship. The Pacers have been especially strong under Alexander in the friendly confines of the Convocation Center, where they are currently 44-11 during the regular season over the past four seasons. USC Aiken is 30-8 against PBC opposition during the regular season inside the Convocation Center since it opened its doors prior to the start of the 2007-08 season. USC Aiken was ranked as high as fourth nationally in the 2010-11 season. The Pacers

USC AIKEN finished the year with a 17-10 record and a second place finish in the extremely tough PBC East Division. Two Pacers earned all-league plaudits with Byron Faison named to the PBC All-Conference Second-Team. Alvin Brown was selected as the PBC Defensive Player of the Year. As a team in the 2010-11 season, USC Aiken finished first nationally in blocked shots with 6.1 swats per outing. Brown guided the Pacer “block party” with 3.3 blocks per game. Alexander and the Pacers participated in their third straight NCAA Division II Tournament in the 2009-10 season. Prior to USC Aiken’s first of now three consecutive NCAA trips, the Pacers last visit to the tournament came in 1998. In 2008-09 the Pacers advanced to their first ever “Sweet Sixteen.” The 2009-10 Pacers’ campaign ended with USC Aiken falling to Montevallo, 88-71, in the NCAA Southeast Regional semifinal for a trip to what would have been back-to-back “Sweet Sixteen” appearances. The Pacers nevertheless reached the Round of 32 in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history. The Pacers reached the Peach Belt Tournament Championship game for the third straight year and claimed their first PBC Tournament Championship since 1993 with a 65-60 victory over Montevallo. USC Aiken’s Byron Faison was named the 2010 PBC Tournament Most Valuable Player en route to the Pacers’ tournament title. Sophomore forward Kevin Willis was also named to the All-Tournament Team. Faison also garnered a PBC All-Conference selection at the conclusion of the regular season as a Second-Team member. USC Aiken is one of only three PBC teams to play in three straight PBC Tournament Championship games. Ironically, all three schools lost the first two championship games before winning in their respective third attempts. USC Aiken concluded the 2009-10 season with a 20-11 record, including three wins over Top-20 nationally ranked opponents. The Pacers have now claimed three-straight 20-win seasons becoming the first USC Aiken men’s team to do so in the university’s NCAA era. In the 2008-09 season, USC Aiken opened the year ranked as the No. 1 team in all of NCAA Division II by The Sporting News. The Pacers were ranked as high as second nationally during the regular season before ending the year with a 25-8 record overall. The Pacers advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game and the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year in the 2008-09 season.

USC AIKEN Alexander led the Pacers to a banner season in 2007-08, his third season as head coach of the USC Aiken men’s basketball program. Alexander engineered a remarkable turnaround as the Pacers finished the season with a 27-4 overall record, including a 19-1 conference record to claim the program’s second Peach Belt Conference regular season title. USCA broke numerous school records in 2007-08, including most wins (27), conference wins (19), consecutive wins (14), home wins (15), consecutive home wins (15) and most wins to start a season (9). The 2007-08 PBC Coach of the Year and South Atlantic District Coach of the Year, Alexander guided USCA to a final ranking of sixth. The Pacers advanced to the championship game of the PBC Tourney and earned the top seed in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional before falling to Clayton State 60-58. Alexander guided the Pacers to a combined 15 wins in his first two years with the program. The Pacers were 15-44 in his first two years overall. Since then, Alexander has turned the Pacers into a Division II powerhouse. Alexander, who was 89-74 at Mansfield prior to taking the job at USCA in 2005-06, is now 193-151 all-time as an NCAA Division II head coach. Prior to the start of the 2007-08 season, Alexander was -14 in his career ledger with a combined record of 104-118. He now owns a +42 overall record. He is 104-77 as the head mentor of the Pacer men’s basketball program. While Alexander and his team went through a tough season in 2006-07 marred by injuries and roster shakeups, the coach did reach a milestone when the Pacers beat Allen 92-60 on Dec. 2, 2006, for his 100th career victory. Alexander joined the USC Aiken community in June of 2005 after serving as head coach for the previous six seasons at Mansfield University, an NCAA Division II institution in Mansfield, Pa. He became the school’s seventh person to sit at the helm and third since moving to the NCAA Division II ranks in 1990-91. Alexander was hired after standing out in the hiring process to the USC Aiken administration. “We interviewed an exceptional pool of candidates for this position; however, Vince stood out from the group as a stellar coach,” said USC Aiken Chancellor Dr. Tom Hallman at a reception to welcome Alexander to campus. “I spoke to several people, including [Mansfield’s] president, who had nothing but respect for Vince personally and professionally.” In his time at Mansfield, Alexander led the Mountaineers to an 89-74 record, the 2005 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Championship and four appearances in the PSAC Tournament. Over his last three seasons, Mansfield was 57-29. The PSAC does not crown a regular season champion, but Alexander’s 200405 squad finished with the best conference record in the 14-team league. The Mountaineers went 10-2 on their way to the Eastern Division Championship. The team finished the season with an overall record of 18-11. All those accomplishments are even more impressive considering Mansfield

was picked to finish fourth in the Eastern Division. Alexander took over the reigns of the Mansfield program in 1999 after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at the university. His first team finished 13-13 and his second squad (2000-01) appeared in the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 1997. Only eight of the 14 PSAC teams, four from each division, advance to the tournament. After posting a 9-16 mark in 2001-02, the Mountaineers rolled off a pair of 18-win campaigns and a 20-win season. In 2002-03, Mansfield went 18-11 and returned to the PSAC Tournament,

The 2004-05 season saw a second 18-win campaign and for the third time in Alexander’s six seasons as head coach, Mansfield led the PSAC in scoring. The Mountaineers average of 84.7 points per game also ranked 12th in Division II. At Mansfield, Alexander produced 10 All-Conference players, six First-Team selections and four Second-Team choices and the 2003 PSAC Eastern Rookie of the Year. Before arriving at Mansfield as an assistant, Alexander was the head basketball coach at William Penn High School in York, Pa., as well as Dean of Students for the York City School District. During his two-year tenure as head basketball coach, he guided William Penn to an overall record of 40-15, including a 25-5 mark during the 1996-97 season. His 1995-96 team was the YAIAA Co-champion and the York County Runner-Up. The 1996-97 squad won both the YAIAA and York County titles and Alexander earned York County Coach of the Year honors. Prior to his stint at William Penn, Alexander was a physical education instructor and head basketball coach at U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City, Okla., from 1992-94 where his teams posted a 29-10 mark. Alexander earned his Associate of Arts Degree in physical education from Blinn College (Texas) in 1987. At Blinn, he was an All-Conference and All-Region selection. He then attended Oklahoma Baptist University, where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education and Recreation in 1989. He served as the team captain for two seasons. 2010-11 In Review The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball team entered the 2010-11 season in the preseason top 15 nationally. The 201011 season did not go quite as planned for the Pacers, but nevertheless; the Pacers still finished second in the Peach Belt Conference East Division with a 10-8 mark in league play. USC Aiken concluded the year with a 17-10 record overall. The 17 wins leave the Pacers having won a school-record 89 games over the last four seasons. The Pacers began the 2010-11 season by reeling off five straight victories, including besting then No. 6 Florida Southern, 77-75, in Lakeland, Fla. on Nov. 20, 2010. Just under a month later, after downing then No. 23 Virginia Union on Dec. 17 in its second game of the 2010 Conoco Phillips and Quality Energy Services USC Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic at the Convocation Center, the Pacers entered the holiday break owning a 7-2 record. The Pacers opened PBC action in 2011 strongly by knocking off eventual West Division champion Georgia Southwestern in overtime in their league opener on Jan. 3, 2011. After dropping five of its next seven outings, USC Aiken rebounded profoundly by downing then No. 3 and rival Augusta State at the Convocation Center on Feb. 2, 2011. The victory over the Jaguars led to the Pacers concluding the regular season having won six of their last eight games. The Pacers commenced the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Tournament ranked eighth in the final NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings. USC Aiken was upset by eventual Peach Belt Conference Tournament finalist UNC Pembroke on its home floor in the PBC Quarterfinals, leaving the Pacers just shy of claiming their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Pacers had two players chosen All-Peach Belt Conference with Byron Faison and Alvin Brown both nabbing plaudits from the league’s head coaches. Faison was named to the PBC All-Conference Second-Team for the second straight season, while Brown was tabbed as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Brown’s 90 blocks on the 2010-11 season helped the Pacers as a team block an average of 6.1 shots per game. The average was tops among all teams in NCAA Division II men’s basketball.
