Seven 30-Win Seasons (1997, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009)

The University of South Carolina Aiken 2

The University of South Carolina Aiken The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center

was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 197475. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066

in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

The Peach Belt Conference 3

The Peach Belt Conference Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. History: Entering its 22nd year of existence in 2011-12, the Peach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 30 national championships and 27 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in the fall of 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06 while AASU women’s tennis has captured four titles overall. The 2010-11 season was one of the most memorable the league has

ever had. Clayton State became the first PBC women’s basketball team to capture a national championship. The Columbus State men’s tennis team reached the national semifinals while the Clayton State and Armstrong Atlantic State women’s tennis teams also played in the national semifinals. The North Georgia softball team made an unprecedented third straight appearance in the NCAA Women’s College World Series, while Columbus State’s Meshack Koyiaki registered a runner-up finish at the Men’s Cross Country National Championships. In all, 46 Peach Belt teams made appearances in the NCAA postseason, including seven men’s tennis teams and six each in the sports of men’s golf and women’s tennis. The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, and USC Upstate did the same in 2007. The conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt expanded to 13 members, the most the league has ever had, with the additions of Montevallo and Flagler. The two schools also returned a league presence to Florida and broke new ground in Alabama. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. Dr. Kendall Blanchard, president of Georgia Southwestern State University, began the second of his two-year term

as the league president in July of 2011. The conference currently holds championships in 13 sports, six for men and seven for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf.

J.H. Satcher Field 8

J.H. Satcher Field

The Home of Pacer Softball J.H. Satcher Field officially became the home of the USC Aiken softball program on March 22, 2004. On that day, USCA opened play on its new field by sweeping two games from Newberry College, winning the first 8-0 and the second game by a score of 4-3. The former home of USC Aiken baseball, J.H. Satcher Field was renovated in the winter and spring of 2004. Located conveniently in the middle of campus, J.H. Satcher Field includes a climate-controlled press box, a concession stand, plenty of parking, coaches’ offices and a locker room at the field. Included among the 1,000 seats are 500 seats with backs. The playing surface is made up of clay and sod. The Pacer Women played their final 10 home games of the 2004 season on their new field, posting a 7-3 record, including a doubleheader sweep of Augusta State. Jami Cornwell, the only Pacer softball player to have her jersey retired, also has the honor of getting the first hit at J.H. Satcher Field. With one out in the bottom of the first inning of game one against Newberry, Cornwell drove a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for the first hit and first home run at J.H. Satcher Field. It didn’t take long for the Pacer Women to become accustomed to their new field. In their inaugural season at the park, USCA hit .362 with seven home runs and 45 RBIs at J.H. Satcher. The Pacer Women outscored their opponents, 51-30, at their new home. Since 2005, USC Aiken has continued to post good numbers at the friendly confines. The Lady Pacers are a combined 47-27 during the last three seasons. They have outscored their opponents 287-230 during that span. On June 11th and 12th, 2004, J.H. Satcher Field served as the host of the 20th Annual South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports All-Star Softball Games.

2012 USC Aiken Softball

Currently the coach with the longest tenure in the Peach Belt Conference and the only coach in the league to have coached since the PBC’s inception, USC Aiken head softball coach Jerry Snyder finished his 24th season at the helm of the Pacer program in 2011. Snyder has compiled a record of 578-568 in his 24 years at the helm of the Pacer softball program. USC Aiken concluded the 2011 softball season by making its second appearance in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional in the last three years. The Pacers finished the 2011 season with a record of 26-18. The Pacers ended play in the extremely tough Peach Belt Conference with a record of 9-11. USC Aiken opened the 2010 season ranked in the top 15 in the nation. USC Aiken advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive year before ending the year with an overall record of 23-23. The 2009 season was Snyder’s best. USC Aiken concluded the 2009 campaign a program-best 12th in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 poll of 2009. The first Pacer squad to participate in the NCAA Division II Tournament, USC Aiken ended the 2009 campaign with a 34-16 record. The Pacers’ 2009 mark garnered the 2009 USC Aiken softball team the best winning percentage (.680) in program history. USC Aiken’s 34 victories in 2009 tied them for second in program history for the most wins in a single season. The 2009 Pacers also tied the school record for the fewest runs allowed (139), equaling the 2006 team for the fewest runs given up as a team in a single season in school history. The 2009 campaign was an incredibly special year for the Pacers

with Snyder earning his 500th career win earlier in the year. The win was just a sign of things to come for the Pacers as they continued to embark on one of the greatest seasons in school history. After splitting with UNC Pembroke on Feb. 15 to claim that special 500th victory, USC Aiken went on to earn its first ever national ranking en route to its first ever NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. The second game win over UNCP led to a season-high eightgame winning streak and the stretch helped USC Aiken to claim a victory in 12 of its next 13 games to stand at 18-7 after a 4-0 win over Tusculum on March 8. The Pacers would go 13-5 the rest of the regular season to earn the second spot in the Southeast region by the start of the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Florence, S.C. The Pacers ended the year ranked in the final five NFCA polls, entering the poll for the first time in school history at No. 24 on April 8. The sixth Snyder team to claim 30 or more victories in a single season, the 2009 Pacers advanced to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game before falling to NCAA Division II softball championship semifinalist and third-ranked North Georgia. In the top 35 all-time for NCAA Division II coaches in career wins, Snyder was appointed to the head coaching position at USC Aiken in 1988 shortly after being hired as an assistant coach. He became involved in softball when he was 12-years-old when his father taught him how to pitch. He went on to play for a men’s fastpitch softball team in his hometown of Short Gap, W. Va. Snyder began gaining coaching experience in recreation leagues in Aiken while he was a young man. He also served as a volunteer

Coaching Staff 11 assistant coach at North Augusta High School. He primarily worked with the pitchers for Beth Meyer’s Lady Jackets squad. Prior to becoming head coach at USC Aiken, Snyder worked at the Savannah River Site for EI Dupont until 1987 when he decided to return to college to get his degree. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from USC Aiken in 1991 and earned his Master’s in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy in 1995.

Snyder says he has several memories and highlights from his time at USC Aiken, but he is most proud of the record of his students in the classroom and after they have left his program. “The biggest highlight since I have been here is that my players have graduated and have gone on with their lives to become successful people,” Snyder said. “You should measure your success with what your student-athletes do in the classroom, instead of what they do on the field.” The program has posted 20-

win seasons in 17 of the past 18 seasons. During his time as head coach, the Pacer program has had 17 All-Conference players, a Peach Belt Player of the Year, three Peach Belt Freshmen of the Year, eight AllRegion players and an All-American. The program has also had four players honored as CoSIDA Academic All-District selections. Snyder and his wife Kelly have two sons, Tony and James. The Snyder family resides in Aiken, S.C.

She also assisted in expanding the organization from one team to six. Before taking over the 18U SC XTreme program, Ward was the Head Softball Coach at Ashley Hall School in Charleston, S.C. where she was responsible for the everyday operations of the team. Ward was also the Head Coach at the Summerville Little League in Summerville, S.C. where she oversaw the entire league, major and minor league teams. Student Assistant Coach Second Season

William “Papa” Dyches Erin Ward is entering her fourth season as the Pacers assistant softball coach. Her main duties at USC Aiken are assisting in on-field instruction and recruiting. Ward has helped guide the Pacers to the NCAA Division II Tournament in two of the last three seasons. She also helped the Pacers earn their first ever national ranking in 2009. Prior to joining the USC Aiken softball program, Ward was a successful 18U SC X-Treme travel softball team head coach in Summerville, S.C. for three seasons. She was able to recruit highly competitive players that contributed to placing in the top-two spots in 75 percent of the tournaments in which her teams competed. Ward coached two future all-Americans and saw 91 percent of her players go on to receive a softball scholarship, including five of them that came to USC Aiken. “Erin brings an excellent knowledge of the game of softball to our program,” Snyder noted. “She has a high level of enthusiasm and expects perfection from the players she works with. She has a great eye for talent and has an abundance of connections in the travel ball ranks up and down the east

Volunteer Assistant Coach Eighth Season

William “Papa” Dyches enters his eighth season as a volunteer assistant coach at USC Aiken in 2012. He started helping Coach Snyder when his granddaughter, Ashley Dyches, was a Pacer from 2004-07. Dyches is a retiree from the Aiken County School District as the Area 1 plumber. He is the husband of Mary Ann Dyches. Dyches enjoys coaching and

Toni Flessate returns to the USC Aiken softball program this season; only this year she is a student assistant coach under the direction of head coach Jerry Snyder. A highly decorated player during her four years as a pitcher for the Pacers, Flessate earned All-Peach Belt Conference honors twice (2009 and 2010) and was named to the 2009 PBC All-Tournament Team. She was also named to the Daktronics All-Region First-Team at the conclusion of her senior season and was named to the 2009 NFCA/NCAA Division II All-Region SecondTeam and Southeast Region All-Tournament Team as a junior. A three-time PBC Pitcher of the Week, Flessate will be in charge of helping coach USC Aiken’s stable of pitchers this season, a position she knows very well from her days on the squad as by the end of her collegiate career, she had stamped her name in the top-10 in 10 different pitching categories in the USC Aiken softball record book.

2012 Season Outlook 12

2012 Softball Outlook The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team concluded its 2011 season by earning a trip to its second NCAA Division II Southeast Regional in the last three seasons. The Pacers finished their campaign in 2011 with a record of 26-18. Playing in one of the toughest conferences in all of NCAA Division II softball, the Peach Belt Conference, the Pacers were 9-11. USC Aiken enters its 2012 campaign feeling as if it has a strong chance to compete for the crown in the Peach Belt Conference. The Pacers welcome back eight starters and 11 letterwinners. Couple that with a strong incoming class and the feelings are justified. If USC Aiken is able to navigate a tough schedule, then the Pacers will also have the opportunity to participate in the NCAA Southeast Regionals for

2012 USC Aiken Softball

the third time in the last four years. “Again this year as in years in the past, we are facing a tough, challenging schedule,” noted Snyder. “It is loaded with not only the Peach Belt Conference schools, but also all of the schools that made it to last year’s NCAA regionals. With a solid returning core and a strong new class, I feel confident that we should be successful.” The 2012 Pacer softball schedule features 14 home doubleheaders at J.H. Satcher Field to go along with a full Peach Belt Conference slate. USC Aiken will play a doubleheader with its opposition on every one of its scheduled dates in the 2012 season. The Pacers will open the 2012 season on the road against Catawba on Saturday, Feb. 18. The first game of the doubleheader

is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. USC Aiken has won three straight games against Catawba to now own a 17-3 all-time series lead. The Pacers took two from the Indians at J.H. Satcher Field last season. USC Aiken will begin its 2012 home campaign with three consecutive doubleheaders. The first Pacer home twinbill of the year will feature USC Aiken squaring off against Queens on Sunday, Feb. 19. USC Aiken has taken five straight games from Queens. The two programs will open the doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19. Three days later, USC Aiken welcomes Erskine to its home facility. The Pacers and Flying Fleet will open the first game of their doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The Pacers own a 15-4 all-time series lead over the Flying Fleet. Last year, USC Aiken downed Erskine twice in Due West, S.C.

2011 Season in Review

Second NCAA Trip in Last Three Years The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team concluded its 2011 season by earning a trip to its second NCAA Division II Southeast Regional in the last three seasons. The Pacers finished their campaign in 2011 with a record of 26-18. Playing in one of the toughest conferences in all of NCAA Division II softball, the Peach Belt Conference, the Pacers were 9-11. USC Aiken commenced the 2011 season strongly by winning nine of their first 10 outings. The Pacers swept their first three series of the year before splitting a doubleheader with No. 13 LenoirRhyne on Feb. 20. After sweeping its Peach Belt Conference-opening doubleheader with Lander, USC Aiken dropped its next four games to enter the month of March with a 9-5 record. USC Aiken began its final six doubleheaders of the season with a mark of 17-11, but six straight wins had moved the Pacers to 23-11 by Mar. 29. USC Aiken closed the curtains on its 2011 season by taking three of four from Augusta State (Apr. 9) and Columbus State (Apr. 11) in its final two doubleheaders. USC Aiken’s twinbill sweep of Columbus State helped the Pacers earn the seventh seed in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The Pacers would eventually go on to earn the seventh seed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional after two consecutive losses in the PBC Tournament in Florence, S.C. USC Aiken narrowly lost its regional opener, 1-0, to national No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C. before closing out its year with a 6-0 loss to Carson-Newman. Pacer freshman India Kornegay was tabbed as the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year during the 2011 season. Kornegay was a three-time Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week (Feb. 22, Mar. 8 and Mar. 28) as well as the Feb. 15 PBC Pitcher of the Week. The Eufaula, Ala. native, in 169 innings pitched, finished her freshman year owning a record of 13-10. In 28 appearances, including 26 starts, Kornegay also had two saves. She recorded seven shutout victories on the year, including one no-hitter in the second game against St. Andrews on Mar. 23. Kornegay’s 219 strikeouts in 2011 were just six off of the school record of 225 set by Stacie Oakley during the 2005 season. She in just one year is already in the top five in school history in all-time strikeouts.
