Synopsis of the play Act 1, Scene 1 The play begins with a soliloquy from Richard, Duke of Gloucester, about his displeasure of the peaceful times that have come during the reign of his brother, Edward IV. Richard, who knows he could never fit in with a peaceful atmosphere because of his gross disfigurement, announces that he will do his best to be a villain.

Act 1, Scene 2 Lady Anne is delivering a sad lament during the funeral of King Henry VI, when Richard arrives and disrupts the proceedings.

Act 1, Scene 3 Queen Margaret and her brother, Lord Rivers, and son, Lord Grey, discuss disapprovingly how King Edward is growing sicker and how the protectorship for her young son and heir to the throne would go to Richard.

Act 2, Scene 1 A sickly King Edward gathers with the queen, her relatives and several lords in order to make peace between them before he dies. Queen Elizabeth requests that Edward take Clarence back into good favor, but Richard informs them that he is dead. He then departs to his chambers, near death. Richard suggests to the lords that they revenge Clarence's death on the queen's relatives.

Act 2, Scene 2 Queen Elizabeth enters with her family and informs everyone that King Edward has passed away. All present lament over the deaths of the two brothers before Richard and the lords enter. Buckingham suggests that Edward's young son (also named Edward) should be taken to London with a small group of followers to be crowned king.

Act 3, Scene 1

vd a 3] n`'; 1

The new King Edward V meets with his Uncle Richard, the Cardinal and the lords. Edward wonders where his mother and brother are, and Hastings arrives to inform him they have gone into sanctuary for an unknown reason. Edward's brother York is brought in and ends up insulting Richard, who then recommends that the two children stay at the tower until the coronation ceremony. After they depart, Richard and Buckingham order Catesby to inform Lord Hastings that Richard plans to take the throne and inquire as to whether they can count on his support.

The lords discuss when Edward's coronation ceremony should be and await Richard's arrival to confirm the date. Richard enters and seems happy that Hastings should make the decision for him. When they come back Richard claims that Queen Elizabeth and Jane Shore (a mistress of the former Edward IV) have joined together and laid a spell on him that shrivelled up his arm (his arm was obviously already deformed). When Hastings laughs at these accusations, Richard immediately orders that he be executed and departs.

Richard and the lords enter to his coronation. As Buckingham approaches the king to congratulate him, Richard tells him that he will not feel safe on the throne until his nephews are dead and asks Buckingham to perform the bloody deed. The duke does not know what to say and departs to think of the request. Richard becomes impatient and asks a page if he knows anyone who would do something deceitful for money. The page returns with one James Tyrrel. Tyrrel immediately agrees to murder the two princes in the tower and departs. Finally, the king dismisses Buckingham, tells him he is not in a giving mood and departs. Buckingham regrets having helped Richard ascend the throne.

Act 4, Scene 4 Margaret is triumphing in the fact that all she prophesied has come true when Queen Elizabeth and the Duchess of York enter, lamenting the death of the two princes. The former queen approaches the two women and tells them that she had warned them that they should be punished for the sins of their family members and that they should not trust Richard. After Margaret departs, the two women vow to take down Richard for all the death and destruction he has caused. Richard and his army then enter. Ratcliffe and Catesby arrive to inform the king that a navy, under Richmond's command, has landed on English soil and await to join with Buckingham's forces. The king prepares for battle.

Buckingham informs Richard that he has announced the bastardy of Edward's children and recommended that Richard become the new king. The crowd did not react to these exclamations so Buckingham suggests that Richard get a bible, surround himself with churchmen and seem pious and modest to the citizens. This would be meant to win their love and, when they offer him the crown, he should not take it at first to seem genuine.

The ghosts all curse Richard and wish him dead and bless Richmond and wish him well in the coming battle. Richard awakes and delivers a soliloquy telling how he will soon die and be unmourned. The king tells of his ominous dream, and Richmond tells of his promising dream before he delivers a speech and preps his troops for battle. The Battle of Bosworth begins.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

funsZ'kd dh dye ls

In our times of "encounter deaths'', ''paid news'', ''political murders'' and the rise of Rightwing political forces, Shakespeare's Richard III is not a very distant, historical play of the fifteenth century. It is Shakespeare -here and now, addressing our contemporary political concerns. He does not dramatize history but depicts the psychology of political power mongers. It is a very lengthy and unwieldy text. Our modern-day audiences are not used to watching plays of three to four hours' duration. I do not know how many will remain at the end of this threehour long performance. I am fortunate to have got as collaborators in this project costume designer Amba Sanyal and choreographer Anjana Rajan; Thang-Ta expert Shri Gurumayum Biseshwor Sharma, my former students, Sonam Stobgais, and Danish Iqbal, who has taken care of speech and diction and imparted training to our student-actors. I am grateful to all of them. Without their support, it would not have been possible for me to present this play. Last but not least, I thank my student-actors who come from two streams -- those undergoing professional training here at NSD, and enthusiastic young amateurs. Putting up with logistical hindrances, grappling with complex psychology and discovering an unfamiliar cultural and historical context, they consistently gave of their best during the taxing rehearsals. My friends Shahid Anwar and Shishir Mishra have been of great help in translating the text. Shishir attended every rehearsal and provide the necessary linguistic inputs. I am grateful to them.

Choreographer Anjana Rajan Anjana Rajan is a trustee and volunteer teacher at Sadhana Sanskriti Pratishthan, Sahibabad, a cultural organisation founded by her late father, playwright/director Lalit Mohan Thapalyal. Besides performing as a soloist and ensemble member, she conducts dance and theatre workshops for varied age groups and leads Sadhana's theatre group. As a member of the visiting faculty of the National School of Drama and the Shri Ram Centre, Anjana has worked with various batches of theatre students, introducing them to movements based on Bharatanatyam and to classical Indian views of the body and dramatic expression, or the natya technique. In 2013-14 she experimented with this technique to choreograph and direct L.M. Thapalyal's Dhakar Party, a political satire in Hindi verse. In earlier years she has collaborated as a choreographer and movement trainer in NSD student productions directed by K.S. Rajendran. Among these are Vikramorvashiyam (Hindi, 2008), Malavikagnimitram (Hindi 2006) and Marat/Sade (Hindi 2012). Other productions include H.S. Shivaprakash's Madhavi (New Delhi Theatre Workshop, English, 2009); the Sanskrit version of Vikramorvashiyam based on Kalidasa's original text; and Krishna Sobti's Daar Se Bichhudi. Anjana trained in Bharatanatyam at Kalakshetra, Chennai, where she met the institute's legendary founder, Rukmini Devi Arundale, and other iconic gurus. These experiences strengthened her faith in the power of the arts to heal and expand the personality and to enhance the efficacy of formal education. Her articles on performing arts and artists, with a focus on India's classical dance and music forms, have appeared in a number of English language publications, including The Pioneer, The Statesman, Horizon, Confluence and Pulse Dance. For over 13 years she has been a member of The Hindu features team and was a Deputy Editor there till stepping down recently. 10
