Terrior in winemaking is a conceptual model expressing a grape vines environment in a specific area. Terrior is made up of parts; from the substructure, organisms and subsoils that weave together to create a whole & uniform terrain that is unique to its place. The building weaves together form, landscape, and program, overlapping with each other to create immersive spaces with the surroundings.

Context |

Tokyo, Japan Below, birds eye view of the surrounding context of the fashion district of Aoyama, Tokyo. This concept tests architecture’s traditional conception of massing that creates a figure that stands against the cities architectural facades. Comme des Garcons fashion pieces work against the cultural norms of society so the buildings figure, form and ground condition play with the abnormality of the brand.

Overview | Object Oriented Ontology ( OOO ) This project analyzes an architectural space and concept through the protruded and recessed pieces that created a part-to-whole massing. Individual pieces were put together, varying by length, portraying the conception of depth. While the ground condition mimics and addresses the language of the city Tokyo. By creating varying and staggering lengths this automatically combines shadow deceptions. And by inter-penetrating different shapes and planes in particular extrusions elevates the concept of depth. Professor: Charles Boggs Fall 2016

Showing examples of work-space interiors, and interiors that have been inspired by Japanese culture and design. I chose these pictures because they emulated the modern interpretation or traditional aspects of Japan. How can I create a material that fits within this environment? I was inspired by the golden tiles that were placed behind the reception desk.

Site: Tokyo, Japan

Culture

Software:

Tokyo, Japan is becoming a technological and commercial savvy city. With this design I wanted to bring an aspect of Japan’s past and modernize it a way. I took the traditional Japanese Bamboo weaving pattern and distorted it to create this wall panel that could also be transformed into a partition wall.

CNC a wood panel with a glossy finish. Wood would be a standard material because of its durability but it will be a heavy material to put on a wall so there will have to be reinforcement. Reinforcement and safety will be an issue as well.

Finish coat would be a glossy, smooth, white varnish. With the complex pattern, pairing it with a sleek and smooth texture will create a “less chaotic” feature. This piece will be reflective behind the reception desk or other common areas around the office.

Because of the hard and reflective material, the material wouldn’t absorb much sound but it could possibly bounce back sound from its glossy finish. Could this create problems if it was in a common area? Would it be okay if it was just in the lobby?

This wall panel could act as a partition wall for a common area, such as a kitchen, or seating area. With its finish, if it does get dirty it would be easy to clean. Could it also act as a table piece? The patterning would have a piece of glass on top to keep it leveled.

The color of the panel would remain neutral, preferably white to neutralize the complexity of the pattern. White or beige will make the piece look less like a panel but a relief on a wall. Would want this to blend with its surroundings as well as a subtle accent.

Slave Music |

7. Narritorium Professor: Scott Singeisen Fall 2015

The structure guides you through multiple spaces that narrates slave life through music; from their oppression guiding you towards their symbol of freedom. There are attributes that the site acquires that symbolized slavery in Savannah: the Barracoons were used to temporarily hold slaves as they were traded from inter-colonial slave businesses in South Carolina. As well as Bay Lane being the hub of all slave trading in Savannah. This area was the epitome of slave interaction that developed an idiosyncratic culture, which produced musical notation that is unique and holding a deeper meaning of what music could mean.

Song was written from the point of view of an African American man from Kentucky whose significant other was taken away by slave owners. The man is mourning his loss as his lover was sold South to Georgia. In the end he eventually dies and joins his sweetheart in heaven.

Song was written by Nat Turner who led the great slave rebellion of 1831. Steal Away was the call to rebellion or steal away “to freedom.” They had plans on winning this fight; as this song portrayed excitement and a ‘superior’ feeling. This riotous event became the deadliest slave uprising in the U.S.

Many slaves knew the secret meaning behind Harriet Tubman’s songs. The songs were signals for man slaves. For example, escaping slaves used the songs to get off the trail when dog slave-catchers were on the loose. Harriet would lead groups up north to get food or other items. She would tell them to hide of wait for her

Slaves had to find their way up north and the best clues to find North was to locate the group of stars to find the North Star. Slaves knew these group of stars as the Drinking Gourd. When people would travel at night, they could ways find the North Star.

There is a sudden change between the space you enter and the barracoons. As you enter into this space, darkness and the echoing of the music is encapsulating.

Dark and chaotic drive from the staircase and the projections on the extrusions. This space not only functions as an auditory space but also visually.

First Floor - Containment Slavery is distinguished with anxiety & this feeling of “tightness, so as you enter through the ground floor, half of the building is concealed with glass, which makes the building appear to be floating and creating a sort of tension, of a massive & rigid mass on top of you. Also, exposure to an important aspect of the site, which are the barraccoons. These tunnel-like structures were used to temporarily hold slaves so users get first hand experience of the obstacles of slave life.

Becky Shaw |

Various experience working behind-the-scenes of multiple productions at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Accumulated experience from stage management, lighting, set, touch ups on ‘The Buzz,’ and wood shop skills.

Worked with this production for four months. Primarily with the actors during their rehearsals and making sure props/furniture and logistics were in the correct areas. During rehearsals I would read lines, and “red line” tape the floors so the actors and director know where furniture placement is before they rehearsed on stage.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee | Lighting Design Before the show I would gather the different lamps and make sure they were working properly by checking if the lamps were fused, barrels were put on correctly, yolk were tightened, C clamp working correctly and more. Primarily worked with Source 4 lighting. Took down and assembled lamps in the Mondanaro Theatre in Crites Hall.

Peter and the Starcatcher | Set Design Worked on different aspects of the set which included, adding tiny LED lights to the main set piece. Hot gluing netting behind the backdrop so it does not sag when hanging. Cleaning the stage floor after the performance. Creating crates in the wood shop and cleaning wood shop.

South Quad Conference 2016 |

HISTORIC

American Institute of Architecture Students ( AIAS ) Each year a quad conference is hosted to bring together students to network & learn about the disciplines inside and outside of architecture. In 2016 the Savannah College of Art & Design AIAS Chapter hosted the South Quad conference that brought together 200-300 students from the southern region of the United States. I created the website where students are able to find out more information about our school, chapter, traveling, hotel, the theme of the conference & the events. * Co-editor Alejandro Pena “There is no doubt that Savannah packs a visual punch” -Tom Rutherford Savannah Style / www.southquad2016.org
