By Tricia Arend At a hearing on Wednesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ann Jones denied the City of Beverly Hill’s request for a final judgment on Measure 2P or a temporary restraining order against Measure 2P which would have temporarily prevented the City from implementing 2P. A two-hour free parking initiative, Measure 2P passed by 68 percent when put on the ballot for City voters in last month’s election. “The City wanted to end this matter and this case once and for all by having Judge Jones issue judgment, however, Judge Jones had different ideas,” said Steve Reyes of Kaufman Legal

By Marla Schevker Courier Exclusive Fifteen-year Beverly Hills resident Damien Bean announced to The Courier Thursday he intends to run in the 2011 Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education election. Bean has two daughters, Celeste an 11th grader at Beverly High and Alyssa a 6th grader at El Rodeo. Bean’s interest in the BHUSD began a few years ago when his daughter Celeste decided to go to Beverly High after attending Page private school for elementary and middle school. “I attended a budget presentation a few years ago and saw what I thought was some less than good advice to a previous board,” Bean said. “That’s when I started paying a lot of attention and becoming engaged.” In his professional career, Bean owns his own management consulting firm. Arthur Marx Dead At Age 89 Prolific playwright/author Arthur Marx, son of legendary comedian and former Beverly Hills resident Groucho Marx, died yesterday morning at his Century City home of natural causes. He was 89.
Born in New York in 1921, Marx spent his early years on the road with his father and uncles, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo, during the Marx Brothers’ vaudeville tours. By the early 30s, the clan (see ‘MARX,’ page 9)

Retirement Plan Discussed The Board of Education voted 3-2, with Boardmembers Myra Lurie and Jake Manaster dissenting, to hire Keenan Financial Services to analyze the benefits of implementing a Supplemental Early Retirement Plan (SERP) Tuesday. The district attempted this plan last year and lost money. However if more
than half of the teachers that retire do not need to be replaced, the district stands to make about $1.5 million over five years. Those who qualify for early retirement must be 55 years of age or older and have a minimum of five years full-time employment as a certificated (see ‘SERP,’ page 15)
