State Grants License To Bel Air Psych Facility During Christmas Break

Council To Consider Historic Preservation Ordinance Tuesday

By Marla Schevker The Beverly Hills City Council will be discussing the proposed historic preservation program at its next meeting on Jan. 10. The Planning Commission approved the proposed ordinance at its Dec. 19 meeting and it will now come before the council.

Councilman John Mirisch has been a proponent of the ordinance, since the last Richard Neutra house in Beverly Hills

was in danger of demolition last July. The council worked with the homeowners to put a stay on the demolition and the Los Angeles Conservancy was able to find a buyer who was willing to preserve the house.

“This is certainly a case of better late than never,” Mirisch said. “This is going to be really good for the City. With the 100th anniversary coming up, it’s about time we figure out (see ‘HISTORIC PRESERVATION,’ page 12)

According to the notice of public hearing printed in The Courier Dec. 30, the proposed ordinance will be recommended to the City Council for adoption and will prohibit the

establishment of new high impact stores to the area, as defined by the ordinance, unless the City determines there is no “negative” impact to surrounding neighborhoods.

“A conditional use permit, or CUP, allows the City to place conditions on the operations of a business similar to hotels, car dealerships and health clubs,” Planning Commission Chair Daniel Yukelson

City Renews Efforts For Helping The Homeless

By Krystal Leach de Amante The City of Beverly Hills has increased its scope of proactive measures toward decreasing homelessness by supporting the United Way’s L.A. Business Leaders Task Force “Home For Good” action plan for ending chronic and veteran homelessness by 2016.

Although the City currently has an extensive homeless outreach program, its November decision to collaborate with the “Home For Good” plan now extends services to displaced individuals by pooling public, private and local nonprofit support resources in providing permanent housing.

“Right now the system for helping provide shelter to someone who’s homeless is virtually like a maze---unnavigable,” said Human Services Administrator James Latta.

According to Latta, “Home For Good” enacts a housing first approach, where “if you’re (see ‘HOMELESS,’ page 12)

BHUSD ESL Program To Potentially Face Cut

By Krystal Leach de Amante English teacher Esther Caporale and her 200 plus adult education students of the Beverly Hills Unified School District’s English As a Second Language (ESL) courses are fearful that the new year will bring more cuts to their already dwindled-down program.

“For 10 years, we had a huge ESL program,” she said. “I did the marketing, community outreach–went to the Persian market, the Korean community, and I was in constant contact with all the local consulates, UCLA visiting scholars and new (international) residents.”

When the state changed the source

of money for the program, the cuts to overall Adult Education Program commenced. The district cut 16 ESL teachers, night classes for working adults and introductory level ESL courses.

Caporale and her students have approached the school board through written letters, email and personal contact to ask if the ESL is officially on the chopping block.

According to School Board President Brian Goldberg, the ESL program will be under review during the board’s interim budget discussions. He said the decision to disband or keep the program must be made March 15. (see ‘ESL,’ page 12)

Periodical Sale At Library Begins Next Week New and old magazines and newspapers will be available at the Friends of the Beverly Hills Public Library periodical sale Jan. 9 to 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sale takes place in the Meeting Room North in the library and includes some periodicals from as early as the 1940s.

The Friends of the Beverly Hills Public Library is a nonprofit whose goal is to help maintain the library’s tradition of service to the community.

The group raises funds to supplement, enhance and enrich the library’s collections and programs.

The Friends of the Beverly Hills Public Library run a bookstore there with an inventory of new and used books, collector’s books, out-of-print books and many others. It accepts donations in books or money and volunteers are always welcomed.

BHAA Cookbook Still Available For Purchase The Beverly Hills Active Adult Club’s new cookbook is still available for purchase at the Roxbury Park Community Center during normal business hours. It contains classic Beverly Hills recipes from residents and restaurants throughout the City.

The community meeting for the proposed Roxbury Park Community Center will be held on Jan. 26 at 6:30 in City Hall.

The much anticipated meeting is scheduled so residents can give input into how to scale down the project. The City Council voted 5-0 to reject all of the bids for the center, Dec. 6, after the all of

the bids came back overbudget.

The lowest bid was from W.E. O’Neil Construction at $14.4 million.

However with administration, contingency and other associated fees determined by staff, the total would come to $16.8 million. That number exceeded the council approved budget of $14.7 million.

Queen Elizabeth Puts Royal Diamonds on Display As part of the celebrations this year to mark her 60 years on the British throne, Queen Elizabeth II is putting some of the monarchy’s most important jewels on display. A collection of the monarchy’s diamond jewelry and precious objects, called “Diamonds: A Jubilee Celebration,” will go on show at Buckingham Palace in August and aims to explore “the ways in which diamonds have been used and worn by British monarchs over the last two centuries,” the palace said.

The show will include pieces such as a miniature diamond crown fashioned by R&S Garrard from 1,187 diamonds, which Queen Victoria wore for her official

Diamond Jubilee portrait in 1897, alongside Queen Victoria’s Coronation necklace and earrings. The impressive necklace is crafted from 25 cushion-shaped, brilliant-cut diamonds, with a 22.48-carat diamond at its center.

Also on show is the Williamson brooch, so called as it holds a rare 23.6-carat pink diamond that geologist Dr. J.T. Williamson discovered in 1947 in Tanzania, and then presented to Queen Elizabeth for her wedding the same year. Cartier later set the stone in a jonquil-shaped brooch with 200 smaller diamonds, which Williamson presented to the Queen in 1953.

The opening date of the exhibition is yet to be confirmed.

Mitchell has donated a historic coastal property on the island of Hawaii, valued at $6.5 million, to The Nature Conservancy.

The 7-acre parcel is home to fishponds and dozens of green sea turtles and was once part of the landholdings of King Kamehameha I. Paul Mitchell acquired the land in late 1980s while battling cancer, but died shortly thereafter.

The Nature Conservancy will conduct a comprehensive planning process to determine the best long-term use of the land in accordance with the donor’s intent.

After an appropriate divadelay of 20 minutes, (we were told by fans that other Jackson show times have been delayed by as much as thrice this amount, Janet bounded onto the stage wearing frayed-at-the-knees jeans, chains and a miniature sparkly silver skull (couldn’t tell if it was diamond encrusted) for a belt buckle.

But regardless of the attire, or the hour, two things were clear.

First, Jackson is a consummate performer who can energize a crowd with a sound system that literally vibrates the marrow of one’s bones. Kudos to whomever it was who decided to pass out ear plugs to those requesting auditory protection.

Second, there is a generation gap. We observed that those in the audience appearing to be under the age of 35 had their arms raised above their heads clapping to the beat, while those above 35 struggled to raise their hands far enough to cover their ears.

As the McCallum’s outstanding president/CEO Ted Giatas, rightfully stated, the appearance of Janet Jackson shows the programming at the McCallum Theatre appeals to all audiences.

It must, for a beaming Giatas announced the gala event raised over $1 million for the theater and that the McCallum–once pronounced as financially terminal–has completed 10 consecutive years in the black.

Without the guidance of Giatas and people such as the evening’s $100,000 Diamond Circle underwriters Gilbert and Thelma Schnitzer and the H.N. and Frances C. Berger foundation, the McCallum Theatre would not be the beacon of nationally recognized venue for world-class entertainment it has become.

6505. ****** T’was the night before Christmas and of all the Christmas Eve parties held in the Desert this year, two are definitely worth special mention.

The first lavish affair was hosted by Helene Galen and Jamie Kabler, who unrolled a unique way to bring snow to the festivities. No, they did not truck it in… that’s been done before and our creative hosts were more visionary than that.

The Galen/Kabler solution: pave the entire front entrance of Galen’s Tamarisk estate with pristine white wool carpeting.

Fortunately, neither Santa nor the other 250 guests arrived via reindeer.

An equally lavish, but more personal Christmas Eve dinner was given by June Winkler who, along with guests Ruth and Howard Gilliman, really got into the spirit of giving by providing multiple gifts handed out to each of the guests. We arrived with a hostess gift, but left with several bags filled with gaily wrapped packages … feeling truly joyous, and grateful for the love and warmth we all shared.

Both Lalezary and his brother Arash are Beverly Hills residents.

Lalezary, a 30-year old who was born in Tehran, Iran, works as a reserve officer during his off hours for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the Associated Press, Lalezary became a reserve deputy in 2007 and worked his way up to become a level one in the last month. At the time of the arrest, Lalezary was on his third solo shift.

According to the LASD Reserve website, a level one reserve is able to work in all aspects of the Department, can patrol alone or with a partner and has peace officer status while on duty. In addition to completing the level two and three training modules, they must also complete 344 hours of level one acade-

“Home For Good” is a partnership program with the Hilton Foundation, Common Ground (non-profit homeless outreach) and a number of local businesses and educational institutions, whose ultimate goal is to help transition displaced individuals into permanent housing.

Latta explained for years, the County has invested $875 million annually to manage homelessness rather than resolve it. He said it cost less to treat and house the chronically homeless than to leave them on the street, where they continually utilize emergency services, costing the taxpayer more dollars.

The goal of historic Preservation is to protect and preserve significant buildings in Beverly Hills.

If approved, major elements of the program would include: •An ordinance by which the City will meet criteria to become a Certified Local Government. This gives the City access to state funding for historic preservation and other benefits.

•Establishment of a five-member Cultural Heritage Commission, made up of citizens who will meet quarterly and make recommendations to the City Council on designation of historic properties and other preservation issues, and ensure that historic preservation is part of the development review process.

•Creation of an incentive program (also known as the Mills Act) to encourage homeowners to preserve and restore architecturally significant residences.

•Penalties for demolishing historically significant buildings without giving the proper notifications.

•A building owner would need a Certificate of Appropriateness before any alteration, renovation or modification can be made to the residence.

Any building in the City can qualify under the historical preservation ordinance including single-family properties, multi-family properties and commercial buildings.

The council meeting will be held Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.

“We are going to be looking at our budget and I’m sure ESL will be one of the items that we look at because (it) costs the district money,” Goldberg said. “Given these economic circumstances, I don’t think we are in a position that we should be taking money out of the K-12 classroom to support adult education classes.”

Goldberg said he does recognize ESL is an important educational tool for many of the parents in the District. He also mentioned if there is a way for the board to make ESL “cost neutral,” he would be very supportive of keeping it.

He also said that federal and state grant money is not guaranteed, “if it’s not a directed grant, specifically for ESL adult education, then that’s money that can be used for K-12 ESL education (instead).”

“I’m very supportive of ESL, my mother came to this country and had to learn English as well, so I completely understand. But we have to make difficult choices as a board and as a community,” he said.

Caporale said the ESL classes improve both professional and personal lives of her students, helping them become more productive community members.

“We teach the parents of children K-12, and if the parents cannot speak English properly, they cannot help they’re children with homework and they cannot protect and speak up for their children,” she said. “As the Beverly Hills community says ‘no child left behind,’ our statement is ‘no adult left behind either.’”

Students come from an array of nationalities and other languages whose alphabets are drastically different from English including Farsi, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, French and Spanish.

For senior citizen and chemotherapy patient Yaffa Levytsede the class currently holds a special value in her life, “I’m attending these classes as I’m going through chemotherapy and for me it’s a life saver because for a few hours a day I can think about something other than my chemo.”

Patti Davis Founds New Support Group To Help Alzheimer’s Caregivers Patti Davis is working to give family members, friends and caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients something she didn’t have—a place where people could share their emotions and struggles, and be supported.

Davis, daughter of former President Ronald and Nancy Reagan, has founded the support group Beyond Alzheimer’s at UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Hospital, “to help people with a loved one going through it now, or those who’ve been through it.”

When her father was diagnosed in 1994, there was “nobody to talk to.”

This turned out to be a good thing, Davis says, because it forced her to chart “her own way through a long 10-year journey” with her father.

“I didn't have friends going through similar situations to tell me how bad it would be,” Davis said. “I know the isolation.”

At the time of Reagan’s diagnosis, and after he wrote

his moving letter to America, the Reagans became the most public family dealing with the disease.

“We were the poster family for Alzheimer’s when the disease wasn’t discussed,” says Davis.

She often found herself stopped by total strangers telling her intimate details of what they were going through with a parent or spouse.

“People felt comfortable telling me things they would never share with friends,” Davis said.

So she started thinking about how she could help.

“After my father died, myself and other friends didn’t know where to go for professional help. We needed something like this.”

After waking at 3 a.m. one morning the idea for Beyond Alzheimer’s was born.

Davis approached Dr. David Feinberg, president of the UCLA Health System, who was not only enthusiastic about the group, but insisted it not be

Picking up from where he left off as a writer in La Vie Bohème, André Wilms, now a shoe-shiner in Le Havre, plays a local hero-in-the-making when he decides to shelter a Gabonese youth (Blondin Miguel) who fled from a police raid on a cargo ship arriving at the port.

The brilliantly colored frames of mannered performances with deadpan humor show Kaurismäki as a master of form: pitch-perfect ensemble acting and eclectic music deliver his trademark look and feel that here, more than ever, cast a magical aura on everyday life.

• Based on a best-seller by Susanna Alakosi, Svinalängorna (“Swine Row” or “The Pigsties”), it tells of a girl in a poor family emigrating from Finland to Sweden in the 1970s and living in a housing project. Growing up with parental alcoholism, violence, and neglect is a life the girl would like to forget, especially as Pernilla August adapts the story to give equal weight to her as an adult with two daughters of her own, but her loving husband pushes her to confront her past when it crawls out of the woodwork.

This couple is played with aplomb by Noomi Rapace, of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo fame, and her own one-time husband, Ola Rapace. Both display tenderness, tenacity, and sobriety, each in the right amount, showcasing Pernilla August as a fine actors’ director.

• She wears the thespian hat on Jan. 14 in A Rational Solution, a domestic drama, one spiked with inventive mores, playful humor, and, yes, angst by director Jörgen Bergmark, cowriter of Kitchen Stories.

• Fans looking for a romantic comedy will find in Superclásico, Ole Christian Madsen’s Danish romp in Buenos Aires, the same quirky fish-out-of-water point of view he displayed earlier in Prague.

The second in his trilogy on marriage and its catastrophes (beginning with Kira’s Reason: A Love Story), Superclásico completes the cycle with the lightest touch of the three, the title referring not only to the soccer championship in which the

limited to just loved ones of those being treated at UCLA. “It was just a no-brainer,” Davis said. “The whole goal of a hospital is to provide compassionate care for people so they don’t think of it as big and scary, where they might be treated like a number. We rec-

ognized family members are also in need of care.”

Part of the reason the group is called Beyond Alzheimer’s, is that it’s also about family and caregivers who often find themselves in the middle— between the patient, doctors and hospitals. “It becomes your story and you have to remember you’re in the picture too— you need time for yourself and time away,” Davis advises.

The free Beyond Alzheimer’s meetings are facilitated by Davis and Dr. Linda Ercoli, UCLA’s director of geriatric psychology. She provides the clinical aspect, while Davis, who lectured extensively on the subject while her father was ill, brings personal experience.

Attendees can talk if they want to, but usually participants simply want to be someplace where everybody else understands and identifies with what they are experiencing, Davis explained.

Geraldine was an Irish free spirit under contract to Warner Bros. His father was Edward Lindsay-Hogg, an Englishman who had become an Irish citizen in the 1930s, who left the family when Michael was 2 and would reappear infrequently through the years.

Geraldine moved to New York to act on stage. Michael became entranced with theatre, but in the back of his mind was the conversation he had with his mother when he was thinking about stage names. He liked the name “Michael Welles” which his mother rejected and said: “The thing is, some people think Orson and I had an affair and that he is your father.” Through his youth Michael would find signs of this in notes to Geraldine asking if Michael still looked like a young Orson Welles.

Michael attended the Choate School where his name and weight earned the nick name “Pudge.” From there, he entered Oxford from where he flunked out. He writes with respect for Geraldine’s second husband, but is aware that he really never gave the man the

chance to be his friend.

Michael’s career began as a floor manager at Telex Eireann to learn to be a TV director. His directing of Ready, Steady Go!, a hot rock ‘n roll show with all the leading young stars led to the call from The Beatles to direct their music videos Rain in 1966, and Revolution and Hey Jude. This was followed by The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus and later to The Beatles last time playing together in The Concert On The Roof.

In the 1970’s Michael Lindsay-Hogg was the dramatic director for the BBC. His story of how he lost directing Brideshead Revisited due to a strike, and then when it was resolved he was committed to another company which would not release him.

During this time he was having a romance with an older woman. With her permission, he identifies and writes of their time together–none other than Gloria Vanderbilt. He also presents a touching portrait of his mother and their close relationship.

Michael has had a sterling career on Broadway with Whose Life Is It Anyway, Agnes Of God and in films with Waiting For Godot. He believes writing about people who are dead makes them become like characters in fiction and yet, one mustn’t rush to judgement.

“And to remember people can change. What someone was at

Watching the end you feel guilty; and you can’t tell others or expect them to understand unless they’ve had the same experience. Friends may be sympathetic, but maybe not identify, so you keep it to yourself.”

What helped Davis, she recounts, is realizing that her father’s soul couldn’t have Alzheimer’s. “His language, mental acuity and memory were falling away, but his soul was in there. I kept remembering that. I found there could be communication—emotional communication—in total silence.”

The book centers on a few of the kids, Jared, who wore leg braces, Austin who lived on the streets, but is now in college as well as the adoptive parents perceptive comments. It is an interesting and emotional tug reading this book. One doesn’t have to give birth to be a loving parent.

Christiansen’s attorney Philip Kaufler filed for a new trail, however, the judge denied the motion.

"I'm not about to change my mind about her involvement in the case," Judge Marcus said.

Resident tax payer and BHUSD school system parent Tom Hayostek and BHUSD School Board President Brian Goldberg addressed the judge with victim impact statements.

Goldberg said that Christiansen's conduct greatly impacted the school district and community by stalling necessary renovations and having less money to spend on necessary projects. At the time, Goldberg was the only member of the Board of Education to vote against Christiansen’s contracts.

"The public trust has been broken and will take years for our district to recover. A clear message needs to be sent (in her sentencing)," Goldberg said.

Christiansen was found guilty Nov. 21 of four counts of felony conflict of interest for her role as employee then as a consultant to the Beverly Hills Unified School District.

Christiansen worked as an employee for the district until 2006 when she left to form “Strategic Concepts, Inc.” and became a consultant.

While acting as a consultant, Christiansen negotiated contracts for BHUSD with Johnson Controls Inc., ("JCI") that corporation was paying her company, Strategic Concepts, as its "consultant."

She also pushed for the $334 million Measure E bond measure, which earned her company $200,000 a month.

The 12 person jury deliberated almost two full days before returning its verdict against

Christiansen and finding true an “excessive taking” allegation involving more than $1.3 million.

Christiansen was charged last December along with former BHUSD Superintendent Jeffrey Hubbard, whose trial begins today with pretrial motions.

At that time, current Newport Mesa Unified School District Superintendent Hubbard was charged with two counts of felony misappropriation of public funds, for allegedly giving Christiansen a $20,000 stipend and increasing her monthly car allowance from $150 to $500 without approval from the Board of Education.

In October, he was indicted on a third count of misappropriation of funds. According to the indictment, when Hubbard was superintendent, he “directed a subordinate to increase the pay of employee Nora Roque” without approval of the board.

According to the Daily Pilot, if Hubbard is found guilty of misappropriation of funds, he will loose his teaching and administrative licenses and no longer be able to work at the NMUSD.

Lastly, the residents are concerned that the facility is not keeping in line with their license, which states the facility be non-medical in nature.

Michelman detailed all of their concerns in a letter to Torene Schwab, assistant chief counsel to the DSS, dated Nov. 18. Michelman said he has still not received a response.

Schulin said the Bridges facility has done “everything possible” to accommodate the wishes of the community.

However, investigations from the state are involved in the process and were “granted a permannet license based on those investigations.”

The Courier will look into these statements and share more next week, after further investigation and comments from all parties involved.

that earthquake faults along Santa Monica Boulevard preclude a subway station there.

Coring is a minimally-invasive process that gathers very limited information.

Trenching -- actually digging an open trench -- is more costly but far more accurate.

The BHUSD's experts are now performing that task in light of MTA's threats to put a subway tunnel under Beverly Hills High School.

Right after the District denied the MTA request, Beverly Hills City Manager Jeff Kolin asked the District for the same information.

That request is further confirmation that the city council majority of Mayor Barry Brucker, Vice Mayor Willie Brien and Member Julian Gold, continues to work on behalf of the MTA and against the clearly expressed wishes of the people of Beverly Hills.

Newly-elected Board President Brian Goldberg said the BHUSD denied Metro’s written December 30 request asking for access to the District's geotechnical work.

“For a number of reasons, the BHUSD cannot grant access to Metro or its consultants while the geotechnical work is being conducted on behalf of the BHUSD,” Goldberg said.

“We leave the option open that if something changes we can revisit it but as of right now we cannot allow them access while our work is being conducted.”

The inadequacy of Metro’s data is a direct result of their testing technique last year.

The BHUSD allowed MTA to test on the high school campus with the understanding the data would be shared once completed.

Now, a year later, MTA still withholds most of the raw data.

BHUSD's trenching will confirm or discredit that data.

BHUSD Chief Consultant Tim Buresh, who supervised MTA's Red Line, said the MTA conducted borings and cone penetrometer tests (CPT). The BHUSD is actively trenching the area.

“A CPT is less precise than a boring,” Buresh said. “A CPT doesn’t actually pull the soil out and look at it. Instead you’re pushing an instrument through the soil and based on readings . . . you interpret what’s happening. (Trenching is the) only way to really be sure what’s happening seismically.”

Buresh said the trenches will be over 100 feet long and at least 15 to 20 feet deep.

He said they will trench below soils that are at least 11,000 years old or Holocene soils.

The state definition of an "active fault" is one that has had activity within the last 11,000 years.

“When we trench, we will see whether those faults are there or not,” Buresh said.

“Plus, if there is a fault then we will have some indication of the age, whether it’s reached the surface and if it has reached the surface, if its reached through new or old soil. That will help us determine how active it is.”

“The problem with coring is it’s like sticking a straw in the ground and the only thing you see is exactly right there at the straw,” Buresh said. “Trenching is a continuous exposure of the upper layers, it is a much better indication of what’s happening over a broad area.” In its statement to The Courier, the MTA agrees with the superiority of trenching over coring.

The MTA refused to respond to The Courier's request to explain why the more accurate trenching process was not used in the first place except to blame it on "urbanization."

Goldberg said the trenching, which began over the winter holiday, is likely to continue through January and into February.

The BHUSD Board of Education approved contracts with Leighton Consulting Inc. to conduct the geotechnical studies on Nov. 9 and Dec. 13.

Phase one of the geotechnical studies cost approximately $500,000 and phase two (the trenching) cost approximately $420,000.

“We want to make sure we get great samples so we have the best science available,” Goldberg said.

THE WATER’S GETTING HOTTER We have all heard the story about how you boil a frog–put it in tepid water and slowly increase the temperature. The frog could easily jump out of the pot, and does jump out if the water gets too hot too fast. On the other hand, the frog won’t notice until it’s too late if the rise is gradual enough.

How’s our water doing?

Do you care?

Just these past few days, President Barack Obama has violated the Constitution blatantly. He’s abused the seldom-used “recess appointment” power in the Constitution. That allows a president to make temporary government appointments while Congress is not in session so that there is continuity of government. Obama just used that power to appoint his lackeys when Congress actually remains in session. A Republican pulling the same stunt would hear cries for impeachment. What does it really mean? It means that the “advice and consent” clause of the Constitution is thwarted.

That clause was put in to make sure that there was a check on any president’s power to stack the government with people objectionable to the U.S. Senate. The president gripes that he made these appointments because “the Republicans objected.” Well, they’re supposed to object to people they find objectionable, just like Democrats do when a president appoints people they find objectionable. It’s how our system is designed.

Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush both found some of their appointees blocked by Republicans or Democrats, in some cases both. Neither circumvented the Senate. They obeyed the law (the Constitution after all really is the “supreme law of the land”). This built-in limit on a president’s power is there to prevent a dictatorial takeover of our government. Obama flaunted it.

Whom did Obama appoint? To what positions?

He appointed a radical anti-private property, anti-business politician to head the new financial services bureaucracy. That’s our money. Why could Obama not find someone who would administer this huge (and likely unconstitutional) new bureaucracy acceptable to a majority of senators? Is it because he intends his new appointee to use that office to impose political tests on our financial services industry? Do you know that they now monitor all political contributions of financial services firms? Do you think those banks and stock firms will dare to oppose Obama’s policies when he has a political hack “regulating” them? Of course not. It’s Chicago mobster politics.

With his other two appointees, it’s worse. He now has completely stacked the National Labor Relations Board, the same one that finds South Carolina unacceptable as a place Boeing can build a factory. It’s the same NLRB that now makes it almost automatic that unions will gain more and more control. Every business or government that is subject to a union fails sooner or later. The argument from the 19th Century—that unions were necessary to defend workers from exploitation —is as out-of-date as a horse-drawn stage coach for transportation. There is virtually zero abuse of workers today. The only real abuse is that they don’t have jobs, and no union ever promotes jobs.

Obama kills jobs, then blames Republicans. If someone creates jobs and makes some money, Obama attacks them. Unions kill jobs, but they contribute huge sums of money to Democrats.

At the same time, Homeland Security is forming over 9,000 strike units to police our train stations, bus stops and sports venues. Ever hear of “Federal Security Police?” That’s what we are now getting. A federal police force armed and stationed all throughout our country. To whom will they answer? Right now, it’s Janet Napolitano – the same person who orders strips searches of grandmothers and people with knee replacements.

Each one of these steps turns up the heat a little more on all of us. This is the historical contest between security and liberty. Government uses “security” to convince us to give up our freedoms.

It is exactly the same tactic Hitler used to seize control of Germany. History teaches that people will always opt for security over liberty, and dictators know this. Our founders knew that and built in many checks and balances in the Constitution so that a president could not impose his will on the country without limit.

President Obama just broke that limit, again.

Since so many of our readers are liberals and thus reflexively support government intervention and Obama, it’s difficult to believe they will see what is before them. Conservatives—and we have a huge number of them in Beverly Hills, believe it or not —are seldom likely to raise the alarm because they are, well, conservative, meaning generally very quiet.

Regardless, it is not open to question that we, the frog, are in hotter and hotter water every day.

Will we ever notice? If we do, will we ever do anything about it?

The stages of life through which we pass have always fascinated man. A description of them has found its way into literature. For example, in the Hebrew Bible, in the Book of Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) 3:1 we read: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born and a time to die…A time to weep and a time to laugh…etc…”

Several centuries later, in the Talmud: MIshna “Pirkei Avot –Ethics of the Fathers,” Rabbi Juda ben Tema said: • “At 5 years the age is reached for the study of the Scriptures, • at 10 for study of the Mishna, • at 15 for the study of the Talmud, • at 18 for marriage, • at 20 for seeking a livelihood, • at 30 for entering into one’s full strength, • at 40 for understanding, • at 50 for counsel, • at 60 a man attains old age, • at 70 the hoary head, • at 80 the gift of special strength, • at 90 he bends beneath the weight of years, •at 100 it is as if he were already dead.”

In the 17th century, William Shakespeare gave us that oft quoted soliloquy from As You Like It scene 3, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his lifetime plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first the infant, Mewling and puking in the nurses arms.” The following lines brilliantly depict those seven stages, concluding: “Is second childishness, and mere oblivion, Sans (French for ‘without’) teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.”

I recommend you find and read those memorable passages.

However, for those who do not, I offer my own version in a mere four stages: First: everyone talks about your babies, first words, games, marbles, dolls, your teenagers, puppy love, college.

Second: everyone talks about jobs, careers, dating and mating.

Third, everyone talks about money: stocks, second homes, trips, possessions, honors, and charities Fourth, everyone talks about pains and aches, doctors and surgeries, divesting, disappointments, wills and bequests.

There you have it: the drama of life in four acts. However, I must conclude with life’s underlying glory: the privilege and beauty, and our ability to love and be loved.
