By Marla Schevker The trial for former BHUSD Superintendent Jeffrey Hubbard began Wednesday with opening statements. Hubbard is accused of three counts of misappropriation of public funds in connection with former BHUSD Director of Planning and Facilities Karen Christiansen and former Human Resources Coordinator Nora Roque.
Deputy District Attorney Max Huntsman told the seven man and five woman jury they aren’t going to hear about theft or stealing during the trial, but instead about a public official. They will have to determine whether Hubbard was “grossly negligent” in not finding out whether he was able to give out the money.
By Marla Schevker Both the City Council and the Board of Education unanimously passed the Joint Powers Agreement, a $9.7 million a year agreement for the next four years with an additional $125,000 a year for crossing guards. Although the new JPA represents a 4.6 percent reduction from the old, the City and School Board
said they were happy with the outcome. The JPA was negotiated in closed session by Vice Mayor Willie Brien, Councilwoman Lili Bosse, Board President Brian Goldberg and Board Vice President Jake Manaster. “It was an incredible experience,” Bosse said. “A smooth

Feuer Bill Would Fast-Track Rail Projects In California Assemblyman Mike Feuer (D-Beverly Hills) just introduced a bill in the State Assembly to delete many of the environmental protections of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) litigation for all rail projects throughout the State, potentially including the Metro Westside Subway Extension and its’ tunnel under Beverly Hills High School. Feuer’s bill mirrors the LALive-sponsored fast track bill

for a proposed NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles. The purpose of both bills is to limit and short-circuit opposition to major projects. Feuer defended his bill as pro-transportation. “I introduced the bill because Los Angeles is an example of a region where we cannot continue to conduct our daily lives without much improved (see ‘AB 1444,’ page 26)

By Marla Schevker The Beverly Hills City Council passed a first reading of the Historical Preservation Ordinance after hours of discussion Tuesday night. This ordinance establishes a program designed to protect and preserve historic buildings in Beverly Hills as well as a Cultural Heritage Commission and an Urban Designer position in the City. Planning Commissioner Brian Rosenstein, who was a member of the Planning Commission Subcommittee that crafted the ordinance, said the final version of the ordinance was the result of weeks of meetings and work
with the commission, staff, the LA Conservancy and the Historic Consultant. “This ordinance represents a great balance between the rights of property owners and maintaining what little we have left of the original character and integrity that made and still makes Beverly Hills the special City that we want to live in and tourists want to visit.” Only the property owner, City Council or Cultural Heritage Commission will have the ability to nominate a property for designation as a landmark.
