New Book Recounts Corporate Warfare, Murder In Beverly Hills It’s a story of mystery, intrigue, threats and backstabbing...and then murder in Beverly Hills. This “truth is stranger than fiction” story is both an immaculately detailed account of corporate warfare and a page-turning murder mystery. Perfect for the big screen, it’s also a cautionary tale on how not to do business. Christopher Norgaard’s Unfair Competition—Murder By Gunshot - The Untold Story Of The Neutrogena Empire is a finely researched inside look at a corporate battle that waged for 15 years. It’s the story of the Belgian
company founded by the inventor of Neutrogena and the U.S. company licensed to sell the popular golden soap and their ruthless skirmishes over trademarks and territories. Protagonists Arne Tali and Lloyd Costen had each in their own way married into the companies—one privately held where the president wanted to go slow, preserve rights around the world and was careless; the other who aggressively wanted to make the company as profitable as he could. Much of the book is devoted to the May 23, 1979 murders of Costen's wife and youngest son on Bedford Drive and the subsequent investigation. Read the full story at www.bhcourier.com.

Fanciful White Continues Family Programming At The Wallis The acclaimed show White continues the Family Programming tradition that’s growing at The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. From the Catherine Wheels Theatre Company, the show runs through Sunday, March 23 in the center’s intimate 150-seat Lovelace Theater. The play, designed for 2-4 year-olds, is company associate artist Andy Manley’s concept about two men in an all-white world whose job is to collect white eggs that fall from the sky, look after them, and to get rid of
color. “If they find any color they have to chuck it in the bin,” Manley says. When a red egg arrives, the slightly more authoritative of the pair, Wrinkle throws it away. Cotton rescues it in the night. “So the story about how color infiltrates the world,” Manley said. Tickets, at $25, are available at the Wallis Annenberg Center Box Office, 9390 N. On Sunday, Martin earned two Oscars for Best Costume Design and Production Design “We are especially delighted to honor Catherine during our Centennial year,” Mayor John Mirisch said at Friday night’s event. “Celebrating her recreations of the 1920’s glamour of Gatsby helps us look back on our own glamorous past with pride and excitement.” Martin was the twenty-first recipient of the coveted Walk of Style award and the first Australian to receive the prize. The on-going award, inaugurated in 2003, honors style legends for their contributions to the worlds of fashion and entertainment. Past honorees include Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford, Gianni and Donatella Versace, Mario Testino, and Diana Vreeland. “I can’t think of another designer who’s more deserving of the award,” Blanchett said. Martin previously won Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction – Set Decoration for Moulin Rouge in 2001, in addition to

As a result of the vote, demolition is now set to begin by April 1 on the old Robinson’s-May Department Store, which is across the street from El Rodeo School, in anticipation of the development of 235 condominiums. Tuesday’s decision to move forward with the contract, which Mayor John Mirisch alone voted against, was met with frustration at the Beverly Hills Unified School District where school officials criticized the City for not informing them of the upcoming vote. “I voted no because I felt the item should have been tabled," Mirisch told The Courier. “For all we know, the schools had not gotten the information in a timely fashion.” Superintendent Gary Woods said there had been no communication on the issue between the City and the school district since Jan. 28; one week after the BHUSD decided to have its attorney Douglas Evertz handle all com-

As part of the Walk of Style award, Martin will have bronze plague placed on Rodeo Drive with her quote: “Film has allowed me to follow my dreams down fashion’s yellow brick road, all the way to Rodeo Drive.” Martin’s work for The Great Gatsby has been widely heralded by critics. The Australian designer, who is married to Great Gatsby director Baz Luhrmann, collaborated with Miuccia Prada to design dresses for the film’s big party scenes and researched the archives of Tiffany & Co. and Brooks Brothers to create ultraluxe jewelry and menswear from the era. At Friday evening’s opulent ceremony at the historic Beverly Hills mansion, which was hosted by the Rodeo Drive Committee and the City of Beverly Hills, Martin received a special toast from The Great Gatsby’s Tobey Maguire. Presenters included Mayor Mirisch, Art Directors Guild President Mimi Gramatky, Costume Designer Guild President Sal Perez, Rodeo Drive Committee President Jim Jahant, and Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Chairman Peri Ellen Berne. munication on the issue on behalf of the school district. Upon learning that the item had been placed on the City Council agenda on Tuesday, that same day Evertz sent a letter to the City requesting the item be removed from that evening’s agenda. “I think the schools have been blindsided,” Mirisch said. “It sounds to me like our staff should have been in close contact with school staff.” According to Director of Community Development Susan Healy Keene, she has the authority to select the construction management plan coordinator in the event the BHUSD does not agree with the City’s choice, despite a stipulation in the 9900 Wilshire Specific Plan which states that the decision shall be mutually agreed upon by the City and the school district. addition of a bike lane that could connect with bike lanes in West Hollywood and West Los Angeles. The Beverly Hills City Council received the recommendations from the Blue Ribbon Committee, chaired by Dr. Barry Pressman. The committee reviewed the options, with engineering firm Psomas, including a landscaped median and bike lanes, and made their determinations. The Committee recom-
mended that the street be widened to a standard width of 66 feet, that it should be striped for bike lanes and that there should be a landscaped median. Bicyclists came from several organizations to represent the cycling community in an effort to influence City Council to create a bike lane on Santa Monica. Residents such as former Mayor Robert Tanenbaum, expressed a desire to avoid striping Santa Monica, citing traffic and safety issues, and concern over the widening taking green space from Beverly
Gardens Park. “Taking away the parkland is wrong,” said Councilmember Nancy Krasne. “I don’t like being maneuvered by a consultant and I don’t know that they listened to the residents.” Many expressed concerns that Santa Monica is perhaps too dangerous for bicycles, including bike riders. Other routes proposed included Carmelita, Sunset Blvd and Wilshire as better options for cyclists. The street repairs will come with an unexpected price tag, however, prompting

Though all councilmem-
bers agreed that the road needed repairs, no one was prepared for the price tag “I have sticker shock,” said Mayor John Mirisch.”That is quite a shock.” The Council was not in favor of the project as it stands. They will bring it up for public comment on April 1. By then they should have a better understanding from staff of the $35 million cost.

Three Children’s Hospital Physicians Named To American Pediatric Society Three Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) physicians were recently accepted into the American Pediatric Society (APS)--a national collaboration of pediatricians dedicated to advancing academic pediatrics. The distinction recognizes the physicians’ roles as leaders, teachers and researchers whose contributions to pediatrics have received national and international recognition. “The APS is one of the most respected pediatric associations,” says Brent Polk, MD, director of The Saban Research Institute. “This membership not only recognizes the individual accomplishments of our physicians, but also their commitment to advocacy, scholarship, education, and leadership development within the greater field of academic pediatrics.” The three inductees will be honored at the APS Member’s Dinner in Vancouver in May. • Nanda Kerkar, MD, (right) is medical director of Pediatric Liver and Liver Transplantation in CHLA’s Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition. She is an internationally known pediatric
heptologist with research focuses in autoimmunity, cholestasis and immunology. Kerkar specializes in improving outcomes for children with liver failure before and after liver transplantation. • Kevin Lemly, MD, PhD, (below) is a physician in CHLA’s Division of Nephrology. He has contributed to more than 45 peerreviewed journal articles and specializes in treating patients with diabetic kidney disease, kidney transplantations, nephrotic syndrome and proteinuria. • Alan Wayne, MD, (right) is director of Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases and serves as the head of the Divisions of HematologyOncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation. His primary focus is in the development of targeted immunebased treatments for chemotherapyresistant acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

On Saying ‘No’ To Kids, Office Romance Q. Dear Dr. Fran: Both my children get sad and emotional when I tell them “no.” Not tantrums—that’s not how they react—but they get sad and pout about the situation whatever it may be. How do I change this behavior and quickly? Martina W. A. Dear Martina: Most children get angry and tantrum when their parents say “no.” This is because they sense that their angry resistance might make you change your “no” to a “yes.” Both of your children react with sadness. This makes me wonder if they have gotten either too many “no’s’,” or a bit of a harsh delivery of your “no.” It’s really important, dear Mom, that you first ponder this query openly and honestly. It will save you a lot of heartache down the road. The second thing you need to do is work on accepting your children’s feelings—warts and all. Your question/comment: “How do I change this behavior and quickly?” tells me it’s uncomfortable for you when the kids get sad, whine, cry and break into displays of powerful emotions. Your discomfort might be giving the kids a feeling non-acceptance. Children (and adults) all want the same thing—to be loved and accepted flaws and all. Try setting your limits by reflecting out loud empathically that you see how much she wants to (fill in the blank with the desired activity), then continue by expressing permission for her to feel sad and angry at Mom for saying ”no.” Then, be sure to let her know when she can do the desired activity to give her hope. Turn your frown upside down and hers will follow Q. Dear Dr. Fran: I really like a girl who works in my office. I’d like to ask her out. Any thoughts? Daniel K.
Dr. Fran Walfish Answers Your Questions A. Dear Daniel: Before agreeing to get romantically involved with someone at the office, here are some thoughts to consider. First, you’re not clear about whether you and this girl are peers or if you are her boss. If you are her superior, jealousy and rivalry is likely to stir up among others fearing favoritism. If you are peers, you need to find out and clear office policy. Once you have cleared the way, take a look at my Top 4 Tips below. 1). Ask yourself if this person could be your lifetime partner? Don’t risk your job and all the potential complications unless you believe he or she is the real deal. You don’t have to marry her, just be serious. 2). Keep your romantic relationship discreet in the office. Do not confide in friends/coworkers at the job. Do your best to keep personal and business separate. 3). If you take the relationship to the next level by either moving in together or getting married, keep individual last names at work. Jealousies and alliances may form and it's difficult to know who your friends or enemies are. Don’t rub it in everyone’s face that you are a team with your lady by having the same last name. 4). Keep your eye on the ball. At the office, your main objective is to do your job with complete focus and concentration. Do not send personal messages to your lover while on the job. Laser focus on the work and demonstrate pristine ability to keep your personal life private.

would allow its proposed office building at 1950 Ave. of the Stars to grow from a maximum of 261,000-square feet to an enormous 731,000square feet. “JMB’s request and reasoning are outrageous,” Southwest Homeowners Association President Ken Goldman told The Courier, noting that association was “in full support” of the petition. “The Century City Plan was enacted years and years ago to limit density and traffic in the areas surrounding Century City. That certainly includes Beverly Hills. It is astounding that JMB used their allotted vehicle trips under the Century City Specific Plan to transfer and increase the height and density of two other buildings in Century City that JMB owns, and now they want to act as if they still had their original allotment,” he said. The proposal by the Chicago developers who are pushing the Metro subway plan under Beverly Hills High School as one element of JMB’s proposed 731,000square-foot commercial tower, has yet to be heard by the L.A. Planning Department, months after last November’s hearing at the West LA Municipal Building which was to be a precursor for a hearing that was originally slated for January and still remains unscheduled. She reiterated Putin’s insistence that entering Crimea was to protect the Russian minorities interests, “that is reminiscent of claims that were made in the 1930s when Germany under the Nazis kept talking about how they had to protect German minorities in Poland and Czechoslovakia and elsewhere throughout Europe,” Clinton told UCLA. The council formally adopted an amended municipal code on lobbyists, updating the lobbyists’ disclosure form to provide more transparency. The e-cigarette ordinance was also adopted, regulating vaping the same way as cigarettes. City CFO Don Rhoads, director of administrative services, reviewed the City budget, adopted on June 18 last year. So far, the City revenues are strong, he reported, at $184, 694, 295. The City is slightly under budget at $78,811,851 of the total budget of $173,018,585 for the current fiscal year, as of Dec. 31. Rhoads shared a new budget tool that will soon be available online to better provide transparency in budgeting. The tool will show budget allocations and expenses in a variety of ways that are very userfriendly. Three new positions were authorized in the Community Development Department to facilitate planning, permits and customer service for the City. In the study session , several taxi companies gave public comments regarding a proposal for a franchise proposal and changes necessary to the Beverly Hills Municipal code. focus on words that are more widely used. The deduction of 1/4 point for each wrong multiple choice answer will also be dropped. The essay will become optional. The College Board will strip many of the “tricks” that have affected more than 1.5 million students who take the SAT each year and pledges to make online preparation free and available to all students. College Board officials say they want to make the SAT more grounded in what is actually taught in schools, David Coleman, president of the College Board, explained. “It’s time for an admissions assessment that makes it clear that the road to success is not last-minute tricks or cramming, but the learning students do over the years,” he said in a speech. Another change will be that the organization will team up with the non-profit Khan Academy to provide free online preparation for everyone, bypassing the expensive prep courses available only to those who can pay for them. Coleman was a key figure in the development of the Common Core State Standards which have been instituted in 45 states and the District of Columbia. The new SAT will echo those standards. In recent years, the rival ACT College Board Exam has surpassed the SAT in popularity, with an optional essay and a shorter exam. In addition, the ACT scores do not correlate as closely with family income as the SAT exams have in recent years, reports the Washington Post. Skeptics question if the overhaul will help the SAT regain ground any more than previous efforts.
“The Beverly Hills Youth Art Contest is a very exciting opportunity for students to hone their creativity and at the same time take part in this historic time in our City,” said cochair Annette Saleh. “Children actually learn a lot through exploring the arts. They gain useful life skills through art, so it's important to encourage them to get creative.” All entries, to be submitted by April 11 to the "Beverly Hills 100 - What It Means to Me," will be displayed in the Municipal Gallery at City Hall from May 1 to 4. Winners will be announced and presented at a reception on May 1 and be recognized by the mayor and City Council at a formal City Council meeting at a time to be determined. Participation in the Beverly Hills Centennial Youth Art Contest is open to residents between the ages of 5 to 18 from the City of Beverly Hills and Beverly Hills Sister Cities of Cannes (France) and Herzelia (Israel). Participants must be students in good standing currently attending a
Beverly Hills Unified School, any school located in Beverly Hills, a resident of Beverly Hills, or a Beverly Hills Sister City participant. Students can enter in 3 categories: Visual Arts, Film Production and Photography. A student may develop an entry in or outside of school and each entry must be the original work of one student only. All entries must be submitted by 5 p.m. on April 11 to the Centennial Youth Art Contest Committee c/o BHUSD, 255 South Lasky Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90212. Fun Facts about lettuce: Lettuce is a member of the sunflower family. Darker Green lettuce leaves are more nutritious than lighter green leaves. Americans eat about 30 pounds of lettuce every year. That’s about five times more than what we ate in the early 1900s. In the United States, lettuce is the second most popular fresh vegetable. Almost all lettuce is packed right in the field. About 25% of all iceberg lettuce is made into fresh cut salads.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the
same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 480-5690 or (800) 843-0260 ext 5690 or visit this Internet Web site: salestrack.tdsf.com, using the file number assigned to this case H535052 K. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid. Trustor: BYRON WILLIAMS, A SINGLE MAN, Duly Appointed Trustee: Seaside Trustee Inc., Recorded 5/22/2007, as Instrument No. 20071235760, in book XX, page, XX of Official Records in the office of the Recorder of LOS ANGELES County, California. Date of Sale: 4/3/2014 Time: 11:00 AM Place of Sale: BEHIND THE FOUNTAIN LOCATED IN CIVIC CENTER PLAZA, 400 CIVIC CENTER PLAZA, POMONA, CA Amount of unpaid balance and other charges: $706,274.71. Street Address or other common designation of real property: 1323 N. SWEETZER AVE. 302, WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA 90069. A.P.N.: 5554-023-079. As required by California Civil Code Section 2923.5, the current beneficiary has declared to Seaside Trustee Inc, the original trustee, the duly appointed substituted trustee, or acting as agent for the trustee, that the requirements of said section has been met by one or more of the following: 1. Borrower was contacted to assess their financial situation and to explore the options for the borrower to avoid foreclosure. 2. The borrower has surrendered the property to the mortgagee, trustee,
beneficiary or authorized agent. 3. Due diligence to contact the borrower was made as required by said Section 2923.5 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (855)986-9342, or visit this Internet Web site www.superiordefault.com using the file number assigned to this case 1306611CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: 3/5/2014. Trustee Sales Information: 855-9869342, www.superiordefault.com Seaside Trustee Inc., P.O. Box 2676, Ventura, CA 93014. By: Carlos M. Olmos, Office Clerk. SDI-7249)

OUCH!!!
HOW TO WIN THE WAR ON “OUT OF CONTROL” POWER BILLS BY KEEPING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY IN YOUR POCKET AND RECEIVING TAX CREDITS FOR DOING IT… Dear Friend, Thank you. For what you may ask, for taking the next 1 minute and 47 seconds to read this letter (Read Fast). I guarantee by the end you will be glad you did. IT HURTS! If you are anything like the rest of us you hate the high and ever increasing cost of electricity. Doesn’t it hurt to empty your wallet and pay power bills that resemble the national debt? To try and keep it halfway comfortable in your house, the power bills can be as much as a week’s pay… and that hurts!! STOP OVER SPENDING! It doesn’t have to be this way. Did you know that hidden in your power usage is a truckload of energy waste? It’s the old inefficient A/C systems that use 30%-70% more power than new High Efficiency models. In a nutshell, the savings in a new comfort system will pay for itself in most cases (especially for systems over 10 years old). THIS MEANS YOU ARE PAYING FOR A NEW SYSTEM BY OVER PAYING ON YOUR POWER BILLS! WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT? Some say, “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it!”, but I say, “If it’s costing you too much to repair, maintain and operate, why keep it?” We can help. We have solutions that are easier than you think. First, you could sweat to death… but if that doesn’t sound like fun then call my office and let me send one of my really cool Comfort Advisors to take a look at your home. They will do some measurements and some numbers and show you what your savings will be. In most case the savings pay for the new system. “CAN I AFFORD IT?” Absolutely! You will be amazed at how easy it is to own a new comfort system. To help, I have even made some arrangements with our bank to offer some super easy monthly payment plans. Before summer hits (now is the time), I went to my distributors and negotiated to get the lowest possible price available before summer prices kick in, and we even have no interest options for up to 12 months. Regardless of your situation we have a plan that will work for you. One Hour Air Conditioning and Heating has the largest clientele base and our distributors let us squeeze them into some savings that I will pass on to you. It doesn’t get easier than that. CAN YOU QUALIFY FOR UTILITY REBATES AND TAX CREDITS STILL? Yes you can! Tax incentives are back but for a very limited time only. They are available and apply to anyone who purchases a premier High Efficiency comfort system. In some cities there are also government programs that will help you purchase a new system and give you even more tax credits. Your local utility company is also offering rebates to switch to more efficient equipment. The Comfort Advisor will show you all the rebates and credits that apply to you. So call Jen today and schedule us to stop by. NO PAIN FOR 10 YEARS! If you act now, I will include a 10-year all parts and labor warranty on your new premier home comfort system for FREE. The system is 100% covered and guaranteed until the year 2023! That means NO repair bills for 10 years! And all maintenances covered for the first year at the minimum. WHAT DO YOU DO NEXT? Electric rates are not getting any lower this summer, in fact in some areas they are increasing, so act now. Due to limited availability of energy efficient air conditioners and the rapidly approaching hot weather, this offer will end soon. Call my office today and schedule your no obligation, no money out of pocket in-home consultation with Jen at 310-806-6540. BONUS! IF YOU ACT NOW, I WILL THROW IN A FREE HIGH EFFICIENT AIR CLEANER… THANK YOU AGAIN! Truly yours hoping for Lower Utility Bills,
George Donaldson Owner

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Welcomed During 3-Day California Swing
Rabbi Jacob Pressman PLAYING WITH DOLLS The Academy Awards of the motion picture industry have come and gone and with them, a bunch of figurines. For the second time, the charming hostess of the event was Ellen DeGeneres who might probably get the nickname “Ellen The Generous.” I am a fan and find her personality warm and gracious, reaching out to the public and giving it a kind of personal hug. To me, the setting for the event was just a bit irritating, with larger than life figurines kind of dwarfing the presenters and honorees. The recipients displayed proper humility although I would bet that in their heart of hearts they were saying: “Of course, I’m the winner. I’m the best!” because they already had tucked somewhere in their bosoms the little humble speeches prepared in advance. It has been a long time since I first heard why the statuettes were called Oscars. Perhaps one of you kind readers would drop me a note explaining it. It is not the most glamorous of names, although my favorite uncle was blessed with it. In Old English, Oscar–or Osgar–means “Spear of God”: os means god and gar means spear. Which I believe describes the emotion of the nominees awaiting which one of them would be chosen in each case.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
POWER FILM—Peter Greenberg and Robert Kraft join Benjamin Netanyahu for a screening of Israel: The Royal Tour at Paramount Pictures.
By Victoria Talbot Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu touched down in Los Angeles for 3-days of visits with filmmakers, Silicon Valley executives and politicians, including Gov. Jerry Brown in Sacramento. The visit culminated with a Hollywood gala hosted by Israeli-American film producer Arnin Milchan, Wednesday, and a tour of the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Museum of Tolerance Thursday before returning to Israel. The visit began at Paramount Studios. Netanyahu and his wife Sara attended the premier of a new film, Israel: The Royal Tour, which stars the prime minister himself. The 1-hour PBS special, hosted by travel journalist Peter Greenberg, is part of a larger series on the country expected to promote tourism in Israel. The prime minister traveled to Sacramento for a meeting with Brown. The two signed an agreement to support the mutual interests of Israel and California economically, culturally and scientifically. Residents of Malibu experienced 5-mile traffic backups on Pacific Coast Highway Wednesday with delays up to 90-minutes, as
security measures reduced traffic to one lane in each direction on PCH. The prime minister’s visit to the Wiesenthal Center snarled traffic and caused delays in Beverly Hills near Pico and Roxbury throughout yesterday morning. Netanyahu’s speech Thursday addressed issues relating to the Middle East peace process, Israel and world Jewry. The Israeli prime minister spoke at the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPIC) conference in Washington, D.C. this week. Netanyahu told the White House that his country would not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. “I will do whatever I must do to defend the Jewish state.” Secretary of State John Kerry has angered Israeli leaders with remarks that he fears Israel will be increasingly isolated with boycotts from the international community if peace talks failed. At the AIPIC conference, Kerry said Israel’s security is primary. The prime minister returned to Israel yesterday.
SPECIAL SCREENING—Pictured (from left): Steve and Rita Emerson, Arnold and Joan Seidel, Barbara Yaroslavsky, Soraya Nazarian attend the screening of Israel: The Royal Tour at Paramount Pictures this week.
I am sympathetic to the presumed desires of dogs to run around off-leash, and the wishes of their owners to allow this to happen. But proponents of a dog park in Beverly Hills, and the members of the Recreation and Parks Commission would do well to visit the dog park at the Silverlake Reservoir in Los Angeles. They would see a large sterile patch of dirt with nary a shred of green, littered with dog waste and traces of dog waste, with dogs large and small running after each other while dog owners chat. Maybe a suitable location exists for such a site in Beverly Hillsperhaps next to the City's waste recycling facility?—but certainly not in one of the City’s lovely parks, and certainly not athletic fields in La Cienega Park or the little used but oasis-green croquet field in Roxbury Park. Daniel Fink ****** We now have former Sen. Joe Lieberman and his law firm representing our City in its battle with Metro. One would have hoped that with Mr. Lieberman’s honored service in Congress and relationships with “the powers that be,” we would have seen a slight ray of sunshine in this matter. Unfortunately our Board of Education and City continue to be dancing to the music orchestrated and performed by Metro. Maybe I am simple or naive, but isn’t the question that needs answering is: “is it or is it not safe to tunnel under Beverly Hills High School?” And should it not be Metro’s responsibility to answer that question to the satisfaction of those parties concerned, namely the residents and children whose lives will be affected by this project?
