Fashion News & Notes Burberry Signs Lease for Beverly Hills Flagship Burberry is the latest luxury brand to commit to Rodeo Drive. Pursuing its strategy of developing large flagships in key cities around the world, London-based Burberry has signed a lease for 301 North Rodeo Drive. The Beverly Hills flagship is scheduled to open late next year, when Burberry plans to close its nearby location at 9560 Wilshire Boulevard. Burberry’s Rodeo Drive store will follow the concept spearheaded by chief creative officer Christopher Bailey called “Burberry World Live,” which the brand inaugurated last year with its 44,000-square-foot flagship on Regent Street in London that integrated digital initiatives into the brickand-mortar experience. That store has some 500 speakers and 100 screens. The upcoming Rodeo Drive store will feature in-store technology transmitting Burberry’s live events around the globe, client service applications that enable real-time access to customer profiles and product information and so-called smart personalization offering custom-made coats and bags with engraved nameplates that unlock videos showing the production

process, including sketches and runway edits. Customers can order the personalized products, which are delivered within nine weeks, after a runway show for next season’s collection, affording them the opportunity to buy something from that collection before it hits stores. Activity has recently spiked on Rodeo Drive. Burberry is not the only new entrant to the 300 block of the coveted retail thoroughfare, as Celine and Tory Burch are also setting up shop there. Ermenegildo Zegna, which currently occupies the space Burberry will take over, isn’t leaving the block. It is moving in June or July to 337 North Rodeo Drive, where Brioni was housed until it relocated last year to 459 North Rodeo Drive. Burberry chief executive officer Angela Ahrendts has stated the brand’s aim is to create “Londons around the world” by putting highprofile stores in cities with strong local and tourist luxury shopping traffic. In addition to the Regent Street flagship in London last year, the brand opened a 25,000-square-foot store in Chicago, a 14,800-squarefoot store in Taipei, Taiwan, and a roughly 22,000-square-foot store in Hong Kong. Beverly Hills High Robotics Team Enters International Competition By Laura Coleman The Beverly Hills Robotics Team started competing its disc-throwing robot yesterday in an international robotics competition known as FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in San Diego.

Longtime Beverly Hills Barber Bill Harper Makes His Final Cut After 60 Years In The City By Matt Lopez For Bill Harper, the hardest part of his retirement last week wasn’t just the fact that he was going to be done cutting hair after 60 years in Beverly Hills. More than that, it was breaking a daily routine that had become as natural to him as breathing. Every day, Harper, 87, would wake up at 4 a.m and leave his Glendale home at 4:30 a.m. for Beverly Hills.

For the last five years, he would arrive at Pascal’s Salon at 311 N. Crescent Dr., shave and head to the Roxbury Diner, where he would order a couple of eggs and sausage. “You see the same guys come in every day,” Harper told The Courier. “I enjoyed it.” From there, Harper would head back to open RETIREMENT— (see ‘BARBER’ page 16)

RELAY FOR LIFE: Sienna’s Road Back From Rare Form Of Cancer By Matt Lopez It started out as a regular Halloween, full of candy and trick-or-treating fun. It ended with a 6-year-old girl’s world being turned upside down. Sienna Wolfe was just a first-grader at Beverly Vista, trick-or-treating with her mother Michelle Kalt and her two brothers when she complained

Additionally, the commission granted a request by the hotel to hold 12 special rooftop events per year (on days other than a Friday, Saturday or days preceding a Holiday.) The commission modified the existing Conditional Use Permit to allow the hotel’s rooftop area to remain open until midnight on Sunday-Thursday and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Previously, the rooftop had to close at 10 p.m. “The Peninsula has been a very good neighbor and has brought good business to the City,” Planning Commission Chair Craig Corman said. “They’ve earned the right to try out this extended hours permit.” Beverly Hills code enforcement has found no noise complaints at The Peninsula in the last 10 years according to the staff report. Beverly Hills police records

found four complaints in 2010, but staff said they were “pretty generic” and wasn’t able to ascertain if they were related to outdoor uses. Peninsula Managing Director Offer Nissenbaum said the theme of the 12 special events would vary, but cited instances where guests call and ask to reserve the space for a birthday party with “more of an elegant, poolside sitdown” atmosphere. The Peninsula also argued that permitting the rooftop area to close at 10 p.m. put the hotel at a competitive disadvantage compared to nearby hotels which allow later hours. “The Peninsula has been an outstanding addition to our neighborhood,” commissioner Howard Fisher said. The commission agreed to review the project in one year. “It’s a good idea to take a quick look in one year and make sure everything is going okay,” Vice Chair Brian Rosenstein said.

Beverly Hills City Council and will become Mayor later this month. “I think it sends a very positive message... it’s a statement that people agree with my message,” Mirisch told The Courier. “I think we definitely heard a message from the community that they are not happy with business as usual.” The Beverly Hills community sent a strong message of reform on election day, with Mirisch, Krasne and Rosenstein taking the top three spots in election day votes. Mirisch got 1,078 votes, Krasne got 1,005 and Rosenstein got 919. Mayor Willie Brien was fourth in election day votes with 914. Mirisch is in first with 2,575 total votes. Brien is in second with 2,373. Krasne is in third with 2,311 and Rosenstein is in fourth with 2,291. Local resident Katherine Cohan received 454 votes and Michael Talei got 299. With Krasne clinging to a 20 vote lead over Rosenstein there are still 493 ballots (207 provisional and 286 vote-bymail) dropped off at the various precincts left to count. Those ballots were being verified by the City Clerk’s office over the last two days and those that pass verification will be counted at City Hall today at 1:30 p.m. “I am grateful to my family, friends and our Beverly Hills community for all the encouragement and support I have received in recent months and especially over the last 24 hours,” Rosenstein told The Courier. “I am hopeful for Friday and

Coping With Lies, Allowing Teens To Have Sex At Home

Q: Dr. Fran, my 5-year-old son has been lying to his teachers. How can I teach him not to lie? Cynthia H. A: Dear Cynthia, when a child under 7 years changes the truth, I prefer not to label it as “lying” because of the negative stigma. Take a deep breath and then one more. His behavior is not necessarily a precursor to delinquency. There are two kinds of “Truth Changing” (lies). • The first is when a child tells his teacher imagined, fantasy, falsehoods. This is fairly common. For instance, kids have gone to school and said: “My Mommy had a baby last night;” or “My Daddy went away on a trip!” These are generally the child’s wish to shock others and seek their attention. It’s best for the teacher to check with Mom or Dad, clarify the truth, and then say the following to the child. “Johnny, you have such a wonderful imagination. Sometimes, you say things you wish were true. It’s very important to always say only what is real and true That way people will trust you. Trust is the most important thing between two people. Trust helps you feel safe because you know for sure that the person will always tell you

the truth.” It is crucial that this message is delivered empathically and with compassion. Any tone of scolding or judgment will defeat your goals. • If, on the other hand, the “lying” is to avoid taking responsibility; that is a different and more serious issue. The key here is to help the child accept accountability. Smile gently (without blaming) and say: “Johnny, you and I both know you took Sally’s toy. Some kids worry they will be in trouble so they say they didn’t do it. We both know what really happened and one day soon you’ll be able to tell me the truth and not worry so much about getting in trouble.” Don’t come down hard on him. You’re not the Lie Cop. You are his supportive coach. Praise every increment toward acceptable good behavior. Q: Dr. Fran, my husband thinks we should let our 17year-old son have sex with his girlfriend behind closed doors in his bedroom in our home. I am not comfortable with this. We have gone round and round and can’t come to a mutual agreement. Do you think it’s okay for teens to have sex at home? Rhonda Y. A: Dear Rhonda, first, you

If one parent opposes while the other parent approves it, then I am against it. Both parents must be together in favor of this. Personally and professionally, I am opposed to parents allowing sex in the home. I have worked with many families. Most do not condone this behavior under their own roof. Some have allowed it. Basically, allowing sex in the home does not give parents the security of a safe environment. It simply green lights

having sex anywhere and everywhere. Same is true for drinking alcohol and using drugs. Some parents think if I allow it in my home then I will know when and where they are using. Not true. • Create an arena of open communication with your teens. Listen to what they have on the minds. Explore their personal values. Help them understand the impact and longterm consequences of their behavioral choices. • Reward responsible behavior and good judgment with increments of more freedom and independence, as long as it does not infringe upon your family values. significant improvement over the accrediting commission’s assessment six years ago. “WASC made some incredible comments about the high school and tried to point out how much the high school has grown,” Superintendent Gary Woods said on Wednesday. “That’s a huge positive for the high school, and it took a lot of work to get there.” When BHHS last went through its accreditation process six years ago, WASC gave the high school four specific areas to advance in, which included expanding access to AP and honors level classes, strengthening relationships between the district and the school sites, advancing technology and implementing common assessments in all classes. This time WASC had just one recommendation for the high school: quantify schoolwide learning results. “Basically, they told us, ‘We’re giving you this recommendation because we think that you’re ready for it and we’re giving it to schools that are doing a great job and need to be pushed a little farther,” WASC Coordinator Michelle Halimi told The Courier. As part of the four-day certification process that started Sunday, the seven-member visiting committee of two WASC employees, four educators and

one high school senior, met with focus groups, toured the school, and extensively reviewed a 250-page report that included a progress report, action plan and self-study, as well as “everything you need to know about the school,” Halimi said. WASC will subsequently send a distilled, roughly 50page report to the California Department of Education. “WASC has a lot of power, if they don’t give you a good review, you’ve got to get your act together,” Woods said. On Wednesday, the team commended the high school on six specific areas: 1) The administrative team; 2) The school’s commitment to the its mission, vision and Expected School-wide Learning Results (ESLR); 3) The dedicated staff and support for student learning; 4) The challenging curriculum that resulted in high academic achievement; 5) The students being highly motivated to achieve and their involvement in a wide variety of programs; and 6) The Board of Education and the superintendent for being highly involved and supportive of the school’s mission, vision and ESLR. “If you ask me, the students are the ones who ‘wowed’ WASC,” Board of Education Jake Manaster said. “This is [part of] the parade of positives and they’re all indicative of student achievement.”

erly Vista student Sienna Wolfe, who was diagnosed in 2010 with a rare form of cancer called Fibromyxoid Sarcoma. This year’s third annual Beverly Hills Relay for Life event is a “24-hour cancer party”, according to event chair Dr. Michelle Kalt, Sienna’s mother. Kalt said after her daughter’s diagnosis, she sought a way to make cancer “fun” and less scary for Beverly Hills families. “We have a whole beautiful community and we’re all here to support everyone,” Kalt told The Courier. “It’s about giving a warm community hug

and being there.” This year’s opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. with a Survivors Lap around the track. There will be live music, food, games for kids, a glow stick dance party and movies played all night. The evening will culminate with a Luminaria Ceremony remembering those whose lives were lost to cancer at 9 p.m. Kalt said Beverly Hills restaurants such as Urth Caffe, Pickelz, Nate ‘n Al, Jersey Mike’s and Whole Foods have already agreed to donate to the event. Mike Gatto seeks to limit the liability of local governments that operate a dog park. AB 265 requires the City or County to post warning signs as people enter the dog park, alerting them that they are entering at their own risk. If an incident were to occur where a person gets bit by a dog, that City or County would bear no civil liability. “We would certainly be supportive of any additional protection the state legislature would be willing to provide those that operate dog parks,” City Attorney Larry Wiener told The Courier. Community Services Director Steve Zoet attached a copy of the bill to the Feb. 28 Rec and Parks Commission meeting, although the commission did not discuss the bill. Zoet told The Courier that

community garden of citrus trees that students will plant inside the fence along Wilshire in April. “We’re doing our part to continue to improve our gateway,” she said. “The gateway project is the first effort that we’re doing on the outside of El Rodeo to improve what is our gateway to El Rodeo.” A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the gateway project is slated for April, at which time a plaque will be unveiled recognizing the project donors.

Buresh assured the board that the 1930’s-era buildings would be renovated to adequate seismic standards to ensure the structures would withstand a serious earthquake long enough to allow people to leave before a possible collapse or substantial damage.

Among the newcomers were Willful Misconduct made up of personnel from Latham & Watkins LLP – who led the pre-event fundraising with $22,960 and who ultimately finished fourth overall. “While winning the competition would have been great, all the organizations really won,” said Scott Hodgkins, a partner at Latham & Watkins and one of Willful Misconduct’s guitarists. “Our fundraising helped raise the bar for the other firms, and it was that collective effort that led to [LawRocks] increasing their money from last year’s event.

We feel great about our participation.” Willful Misconduct’s chosen charity was the Good Shepherd Center, which provides food, clothing, case management, and transitional housing for homeless women and children in Los Angeles. Founded in 1984, the center also offers employment training and skill workshops, and features a Children’s Center and Teen Center that assist children of homeless families. The band decided to perform and fund raise on behalf of the center after selecting it from a list of charitable foundations supported by Latham & Watkins. “One of [the band’s] nonlawyer members came up with the idea, and we really liked the mission of the center,” Hodgkins said. “It wasn’t a firm-wide decision, but it was a great cause we knew the firm supported.” “[Giving back] is part of our general philosophy,” said Joseph Farrell, a partner at the firm who served as Willful Misconduct’s manager at Friday’s concert. “ There’s a lot of people and a lot of causes who need help, and as lawyers there’s some things we can do that others can’t.”

Kalt says Sienna was nervous about being pulled out of school for treatments because her friends

with the middle school’s Science Olympiad team, which will be competing in the state finals on April 6 in Anaheim. “The whole scientific method is you try, you learn as much by your failures as by your successes,” said Torlakson, a former science teacher. “[STEM] informs young people to be informed about these [environmental] issues so they can vote better, be better citizens.” BHUSD staff is currently working to determine how to best embed a STEM program throughout the district, likely kick-starting it in the middle schools. As part of the current planning process, Chief Academic Officer Jennifer Tedford has been examining other districts’ STEM programs in order to stylize it for Beverly Hills schools.

Horace Mann Principal Steve Kessler, who told The Courier he couldn’t remember a State Superintendent ever visiting the BHUSD in his 37 years with the district, said the Huskies are committed to being at the forefront of the forthcoming STEM curriculum. “We were just so honored,” Kessler said of Torlakson’s visit yesterday. “He was really taken by our enthusiasm over STEM. It’s something that we need to really take on.” Woods emphasized that the current Board of Education is united in its commitment to supporting STEM education. “I kind of have a sense that this could be one of the most important moves we make in this district,” he said.

gery.” With two cancer-free years, Sienna says thinking about cancer doesn’t scare her. “No, it just makes me feel normal,” Sienna said. Sienna said she is looking forward to seeing all her friends and meeting new friends at this year’s Relay for Life event. “It’s really fun and the money goes to people with cancer to help find a cure,” Sienna said. “It would be really nice to have everyone there.”

Desert Roundup “Magnificent!” is only one superlative used to describe the BP Paribas Open now underway at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden through March 17. LETTER TO THE EDITOR One of the nice things about living here is that many parts of it are walkable. This past Saturday my peregrinations took me to my haircut on Roxbury near Wilshire, Whole Foods on Crescent, the bank on Beverly and South (“little”) Santa Monica, and the pharmacy a few blocks west at Bedford. I noticed that Beverly HIlls is becoming almost as dirty as neighboring Los Angeles. The sidewalks are littered, cracked, and stained with chewing gum, tar, unidentifiable material, and dog waste in various states of freshness or aging. If we are to remain a world-class destination, municipal efforts should be dedicated to fixing and cleaning the sidewalks, at least in the triangle bounded by Wilshire, Canon or Crescent to the east, and “little” Santa Monica, and perhaps extending along South Beverly Drive from Wilshire to Olympic. Some businesses, mainly restaurants and coffee shops, have someone sweep the sidewalk and street in front of them, but most do not. Maybe we could even install nice patterned sidewalks like some cities do. But existing sidewalks should be in good shape and clean. Daniel Fink
