By Mitch Lehman Believed to have committed crimes in Bel Air, West Hollywood and San Marino, the “distraction burglars” swindled more than $200,000 in cash and jewelry from a San Marino couple last week. The criminals, who are still at large, operate under the ruse of being building inspectors, city inspectors or utility employees, enticing homeowners into a backyard or adjacent property to discuss an upcoming project. While the resident is distracted, an accomplice enters the home and steals valuables, usually jewelry. In the San Marino case last week, the burglars

New Facility To Enchance Center’s Standing As A Center Of Excellence For Sports Medicine

New St. John’s Chan Soon-Shiong Musculo-Skeletal Science Center Announced At Corporate Leadership Event Honoring Tim Leiweke St. John’s Health Center will soon announce creation of a state-of-the-art orthopedic and sports medicine center—the Chan Soon-Shiong Musculo-Skeletal Science Center (CSS-MSSC)—at a corporate leadership event honoring Los Angeles developer Timothy J. Leiweke at the JW Marriott Los Angeles at LA Live. The CSS MSSC is made possible with funding from the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation, and the initiative has been led by healthcare leaders Michele B. Chan and Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD, by Lou Lazatin, St. John’s president/CEO, and by the newly appointed co-Medical Directors Neal ElAttrache, MD, and Bert Mandelbaum, MD. “There is a great need to integrate sports training with physical therapy and rehabilitation, and with state-of-the-art acute care at every level, from high school to college to professional sports,” said Soon-Shiong. “To our knowledge, there is currently no institution in the country dedicated to addressing musculoskeletal conditions in this comprehensive fashion. “This center will provide this unifying structure, through which St. John’s will fully integrate sports medicine, sports performance science, physical therapy, stem cell therapy, integrated education of surgical fellows, physical therapists and sports trainers,” he continA rendering the new Chan Soon-Shiong Musculo-Skeletal Science Center at St. John’s. ued. “Clinicians of the highest caliber will provide acute care and conduct state-of-the-art clinical trials,” Soon-Shiong added. “The center will provide the highest quality of care, from treatment to rehabilitation, and will have a reputation for excellence and innovation that professional sports teams and world-class sports performance organizations will seek out,” Soon-Shiong continued. “Our honoree this evening, Tim Leiweke, and the Anschutz Entertainment Group epitomize excellence in sports and the highest standards of civic and community service. I can think of no more appropriate occasion to announce the establishment of this new center.” The CSS-MSSC vision includes the addition of both the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic and the Santa Monica

Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine G r o u p (SMOG) to the St. John’s family. “ H av i n g the support of these two healthcare leaders will make St. John’s a global destination for advanced orthopedic and sports medicine care,” said Lazatin.

“Through these joint efforts, St. John’s will also be able to better serve the community, especially to benefit L.A.’s young student athletes. “The new center will be a world leader in the increasingly important field of sports sciences and a provider of the highest quality of care for athletes along the entire continuum from treatment through complete rehabilitation,” explained Lazatin. “St. John’s is grateful for the visionary leadership of the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation, who initiated the concept, and for Kerlan Jobe and SMOG who have agreed to take part in this amazing new venture.” As part of Kerlan-Jobe’s move to St. John’s, its practice at the Howard Hughes Center in L.A. will become a St. John’s outpatient department. KerlanJobe will also move its outpatient clinic in Beverly Hills and all of its inpatient practices to the St. John’s campus, in addition to bringing its research and fellowship program to St. John’s. Kerlan-Jobe, which is the largest and most successful sports medicine fellowship program in the country, will be supported under an affiliation with the St. John’s Foundation. SMOG, which has had a strong relationship with St. John’s for the past 25 years, will expand its affiliation with the health center by converting its clinic on the 4th floor of the 2020 Santa Monica Blvd. building in Santa Monica into a St. John’s outpatient department. SMOG will also contin-

ue to provide outpatient and inpatient services at St. John’s. “Bringing SMOG and Kerlan-Jobe under the St. John’s umbrella of care will allow us to better serve our patients,” said Lazatin. “The talent and experience these two great orthopedic powerhouses bring is undeniable. This new venture will enable us to continue to provide the breakthrough medicine and inspired healing for which we are known.” Kerlan-Jobe and SMOG have already developed reputations as the go-to clinics for sports medicine care in Los Angeles. Both work with Los Angeles-area teams such as the Lakers, Sparks, Dodgers, Angels, Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Chivas USA and LA Galaxy as well as collegiate athletic departments at USC, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine and Santa Monica College. This is all in addition to national and international organizations and events including the PGA, Majo League Baseball, US Soccer, Amgen Tour of California, Cirque du Soleil and the World Cup. “St. John’s sees its 2012 Corporate Leadership Award event honoring Timothy J. Leiweke as the perfect place to announce this new venture,” said Lazatin. “An extraordinary leader, Tim is dedicated to revitalizing the economic, civic and social landscape of Los Angeles. His achievements have created positive change that has resulted in extraordinary and lasting benefits to the community.”

No Decisions Made On Roxbury Park By Marla Schevker The Recreation & Parks Commission liaison committee met Wednesday to discuss programming plans for the rehabilitation or rebuild of the Roxbury Park community center. The liaison committee met to discuss scaling back the oversized project after bids were rejected in December for coming in over budget.

The committee decided to look into renovating the existing community center. Vice Mayor Willie Brien said the cost of hiring a consultant to evaluate renovating the existing structure was estimated at $20,000. The City has the option to tear down the existing community center and build one of similar size and scope. “Nothing has been decid-

ed,” Brien said. “[Community members] want it done right and we’re going to do our very best to get it done right. We won’t agree on everything, but we’re going to do our best to come up with something that meets the needs of the community.” In a letter to Recreation and Parks Commissioner and (see ‘ROXBURY PARK,’ page 16)

Local Businesses Band Together During Outage By Laura Coleman For the past 15 years, Leslie Cohen has driven from the valley to make her lunchtime appointment at Nick Chavez’ Beverly Hills hair salon on Burton Way and North Wetherly Drive. This past Wednesday, however, Cohen rescheduled her normal time for later in the day and found herself at 3 p.m., most unexpectedly, seated before a mirror inside the offices of one of the City’s most romantic restaurants, Il Cielo, getting a

blow-out from her favorite Nick Chavez stylist, Andres Velez. “If I had kept to my schedule, this wouldn’t have happened,” she laughed, as Velez flipped her now dry hair over her face to add more body before putting in large rollers in the upstairs’ office of the restaurant on Burton Way. “The straighthaired people all got to leave.” Cohen was one of two Nick Chavez clients who got to witness firsthand the power of good neighbor relationships when fol-

lowing a power outage, Chavez telephoned his friend and neighbor, Il Cielo owner Pasquale Vericella, and asked a favor: Might he avail himself to the restaurateur's power? According to Southern California Edison spokesperson Mashi Nyssen, the power outage was caused by an underground failure and impacted 1,065 customers from 2:01-4:13 p.m. in the square of Burton Way, Wilshire Boulevard, Doheny Drive and Robertson Boulevard.

So reveals Mother Dolores, Prioress of the Abbey of Regina Laudis in the bucolic countryside of Bethlehem, CT., founded in 1948 and elevated to the status of an abbey in 1976. Backing off an engagement to architect Donald Robinson in 1963, she packed a single suitcase, and, at 24, arrived at the Abbey in Bethlehem. Some areas are designated as an ‘environmental, historical preserve.’ Our nuns create pottery and candles, are skilled at blacksmithing, weaving, beekeeping for our honey. They attend to the field work, look after the sheep and cows, cheese making, gardens with their vegetables, herbs and flowers, greenhouses, the bakery, sewing and laundry rooms. Another Roger Lefkon Phobia

THE FEAR OF LABELS!! My earliest encounter with labels was as a sleepaway camper where everything that I possessed had a name tag on it including my shoes, sweats, socks, shirts, shorts, sweaters, shark repellent and, as an aid to achieving “All Around Camper” status, my bottle of steroids. For some inexplicable reason these tags always contained my middle name, no doubt to set me apart from all of the other Roger Lefkons roaming the planet. These labels were highly durable and virtually indestructible thus guaranteeing that they would stick with me through my nursing home years and beyond. This early experience led to a fear of all kinds of labels including those infamous mattress tags that contained a warning that unauthorized removal carried with it the threat of a stiff fine or in the case of repeat offenders, a midnight visit by the mattress patrol who would snatch you from your bed and see to it that you were never heard from again. My exwife was a casualty of such a disappearing act. Sticky labels, the kind that you find on fruit, are not easily removed and I have never been

able to develop the skill set necessary to pry off the tags without also taking off some of the skin and thus exposing the inner fruit to prying eyes and a wide range of bacteria. Then there are those mysterious bar codes you find on the surface of apples, kiwis and kumquats (round not oval). Sticky label authorities will tell you that these codes reveal the price, where and when the fruit was grown, the vital statistics, including the TV viewing habits, blood type and sexual preferences, of the picker, whether the specimen was genetically altered and if, when no one was looking, the fruit was sprayed with herbicides, fungicides or pesticides or simply left alone to survive on it’s own like the rest of us. Other scary labels to fear include food themed monikers for members of the mob, tough guys who answer to Cracker Jack, Meatball, Johnny Pizza, Mush, Stuffed Cabbage and, as soon as he is released from the penitentiary, Gluten-Free. There are also labels to describe people: “he’s not the brightest crayon in the box”; “she’s a good eater”; “he’s a mench”; “she’s a diva”; “he’s a

loser”; “she’s a survivor”; “he’s a stand up guy;” “she’s a looker” and “they are both to die for.” Vanity license plates manufactured by the creative arts section of the state prison system are also of concern to me since they provide complete strangers with an instant snap shot of who you are. Cereal KLR; OCDMD; Godfada; Odd Cple and Lic 2 Kill have all been spotted around town, many sporting handicap signage. Labels found on packaged food products can be misleading, confusing and intimidating. Nutrition facts labels are based on a 2,000 calorie diet which, of course, does not apply to the more than 100 million Americans who are currently overweight or plan to join the ranks of the obese by years end. In order to fully comprehend the significance of USDA labeling on meat products it’s almost mandatory that you first have a degree in Food & Nutrition. How else to sort out the meaning of number of calories, calories from fat, we’re talking all kinds of fat, and details about protein, cholesterol, sodium and vitamins. I’m also at a loss when it comes to grasping the implications of product dating labels such as sell-by, best if used- by and use-by. One false reading can land

you in the ICU where the only nutritional information you will need to know is what’s in your Jello, plain Jello, not the gourmet kind with tiny pieces of fruit in it. The recording industry is another source of label induced anxiety. Those benign labels, RCA, Columbia, Capitol and Decca have, over time, been replaced by Asylum, Panic Button, Death Row, Black Eye and Big Scary Monsters, a UK record label with the hit album, “Pulled Apart By Horses.” Among the most frightening labels are those descriptive stickers affixed to military weapons. Hardware such as fragmentation grenades (contains 5-ounces of explosive material, employs a detonator type fuse, comes in olive drab with yellow stripes, (not suitable for children under 10 or pets under 3); portable rocket launchers (spring loaded fins, rear blast warning, adjustable sling, range 15km, warning that if accidentally launched projectile cannot be retrieved, effective against tanks and unruly spring break celebrants), nuclear/biological gas masks (sealed cheek filters, large eye holes, nylon head harness, non-alcoholic drink tube, caution: will melt at 800 degrees, available in designer colors for him and her). All the above items come with a large print owners manual and a two week parts and service warranty.

BEVERLY HILLS Perhaps the scariest label of all is the sticker shock that awaits high end new car buyers. The Bugatti Veyron goes for $1.7 million, the Lamborghni Revention can be yours for $1.6 million and you can drive the Ferrari Enzo out of the showroom for a very reasonable $670,000. As you might expect they all come with big time payment books. My taste is a bit more modest which is why I prefer to be seen in a stripped down Hyundai Accent with a sticker price of $10,705 but if you buy one be prepared to bring a portable radio and a battery powered three speed electric fan with you. Jewish Americans as well. Concurrent with Peres’ visit, the Obama Administration denied Israel the use of it’s “bunker-buster” bomb, thereby fueling sentiment that, despite the logistical challenges of accomplishing Israel’s goal to quell the threat posed by Iran having the ability to make nuclear weapons, the United States doesn’t support the efforts of the Middle East’s only democracy. “The past few years have shown that the U.S. President is not a friend of Israel,” Israeli activist Ari Bussel said. “If the United States doesn’t stand up to it’s responsibility to the world, no one else will.” Six million of the world’s 14 million Jews live in Israel. Nearly one million Jews live in Los Angeles. According to Israeli Consul General David Siegel, Peres’ visit was intended to highlight a message of peace and hope. “What I’m hearing is that the community is very excited,” Siegel said. “He’s the great uniter.” In addition to speaking to nearly 1,400 members of the Jewish community in an hour-long conversation with Emmy-winning journalist Campbell Brown on March 8 at the Beverly Hilton, while in Los Angeles Peres visited DreamWorks Animation where he addressed a campus of 1,000 employees, Creative Artists Agency as a “thank you” to the television industry (11 U.S. shows are based on Israeli content), and engaged the Latino community in

$1.8 million was spent on the high school and again on Horace Mann. Boardmember Lisa Korbatov said all of the geotechnical experts and engineers the district has hired to fight the Westside Subway Extension Tunnel under the high school have fallen under the umbrella of “law firm.” Even the payments for the trenching will fall under the legal category, she said. The COC is comprised of four committees: the audit committee, the construction committee, the ethics committee and the public relations committee. Public Relations Chair Howard Goldstein said the COC will be reaching out to the community through platforms like Beverly High’s KBEV to get information out regarding Measure E spending. However, Goldstein said the committee is still determining how best to reach Los Angeles at large.

GATEWAY (Continued from page 4)

9900 Santa Monica Boulevard has been underway for the better part of a decade. In November, the Commission rejected a proposal to build a four-story 65-foot tall mixed-use project at the site of the former railway property at the west corner of the “Gateway.” The Commission also denied a zone change request from transportation to commercial for all three former railroad properties along Santa Monica Boulevard, which would have allowed for a 2:1 floor area ratio (FAR) and a

a unique event that included five members of Congress. “His presence is a powerful reminder of the original dream and a booster shot for those who find their interest or enthusiasm for Israel flagging because of the day-to-day difficulties of the state,” Los Angeles’ Sinai Temple Rabbi David Wolpe said. “What other state is born in a region where everyone wishes it were dead?” According to Rabbi Laura Gellar of Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills, Peres’ vision and optimism serves as an inspiration to the entire community. “I think the major challenge that faces American Jewry is lack of connection to a large sense of peoplehood,” she said. “He enables us to remain hopeful, even at times when hopefulness is a challenging response.” One of the younger Temple Emanuel congregants who attended the Jewish Federation-sponsored event at the Beverly Hilton, 34-year-old Steven Stiglitz, said he was surprised with Peres’ message of hope and optimism. “I expected to go there and hear the drums of war beating,” he said. “I probably should have known better.” The 88-year-old Nobel Laureate is regarded as the last founding father of Israel who remains active in politics and is frequently lauded for his unwavering optimism in the face of constant adversity. “He tells us don’t for a second stop believing, don’t stop dreaming,” Bussel said.

Chair Woodrow Clark made four recommendations to the board on behalf of the COC. Firstly, he said, the COC knows it is important to continue the evaluation of geotechnical issues throughout the district and recommended the BHUSD continue to study those problems. Secondly, there are outstanding concerns about latent defects where construction was performed under prior bond measures and the district should explore legal options on those failings. Thirdly, the COC requested the board put a notice out for new members for the committee, especially experts in construction. Lastly, the COC inquired if they could receive a modest budget to help with public relations. The COC will next meet on April 19 at 4 p.m. in the District Office Board Room. For more information on the COC and Measure E expenditures, visit www.bhusd.org.

45-foot height limit. As of March 8, the Commission decided to give less than the full 2.0 FAR as allowed under C3 commercial zoning to approximately 1.5 to 1.7 FAR. In addition, the Commission now has the discretion to allow up to four stories on two of the parcels depending on how the developers address each of the objectives by providing community benefits like green space, additional public parking and iconic architecture. “These objectives, by being broad in nature, in no way loosen any City development standards,” Yukelson said.

W E L L N E S S W E E K — SUPPLEMENT Proven Non-Drug Treatment For Major Depression Now Available By Todd Hutton, MD epression has long been a battle for many, and for those who continue to suffer even with medication, there is finally an option that is restoring the lives of thousands. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), approved by the FDA in October 2008 and recently featured on the Dr. Oz Show, is a major technological breakthrough in psychiatric treatment. This cutting edge technology for depression is now available at Southern California TMS Centers in Beverly Hills and Pasadena. TMS can relieve depression when antidepressants are ineffective or cause intolerable side effects. This non-drug treatment is ideal for patients such as pregnant or nursing women, or those who want to avoid medication altogether because of side effects such as weight gain or sexual dysfunction. TMS stimulates an area of the brain known to be underactive in patients with depression. An MRI strength magnet is positioned over the head to deliver repetitive magnetic pulses. Mood pathways are stimulated and become more active, restoring normal brain function and improving depressive symptoms. TMS treatments are highly effective, safe, and well tolerated. No

D

anesthesia or sedation is required, so patients are able to drive to and from treatment and continue their everyday activities. In addition to depression, TMS is also used for other psychiatric and neurologic conditions such as Bipolar Disorder, chronic pain, Fibromyalgia, anxiety, migraines, and auditory hallucinations. Research is also being done using TMS for post-stroke recovery. Dr. Eric Levander, a Beverly Hills psychiatrist trained in TMS has said, “A majority of my depressed patients who have failed to get much relief using different antidepressant medication combinations have gotten considerably better with TMS. “ SoCal TMS Center is the largest provider of TMS in the country with multiple locations and nine affiliated doctors. Eighty percent of their patients have experienced improvement, with profound recovery in over half. There is now an alternative for those suffering from depression. Southern California TMS Center has the experience and compassion to help you overcome your depression. For information contact Southern California TMS Center (866-3227776), www.socaltms.com.

Salmon Is Feel-Good Fishing Film; Hill & Tatum Team Innervates Jump Street At first glance, Salmon Fishing In The Yemen sounds like a documentary produced by that country’s Department of Fish and Game. It’s not. Instead, it is a very pleasant film starring Ewan McGregor (Fred Jones), Kristin Scott Thomas (Patricia Maxwell) and Emily Blunt (Harriet) who, if you’re a guy, will fall for hook, line and sinker. Based on a 2006 novel by Paul Torday, the movie is a low-key comedy about a Yemeni Sheikh who believes that publicizing his hobby will help promote “peace and spiritual reflection in a land ravaged by conflict.” I went to the screening hesitantly because I ventured fishing only once in my life and the only thing I caught was a cold. To my surprise, the screenplay isn’t only casting a rod into the ocean waiting for an unsuspecting, hungry fish to chomp on to the hook, but it is an enjoyable screenplay acted with the proper amount of restraint (after all, how much acting motivation can you pour into a movie about salmon?) by its three stars. The Sheikh, played admirably by Amr Waked, hopes to make his dream of a desert filled with water, salmon and fishermen a reality. Britain’s leading expert on fishy endeavors (Jones) hopes to scale back the Sheikh’s aspirations with a dose of reality. He believes the project to be dead in the water. However, the prime minister’s press secretary (Patricia) sees this as a good will opportunity for both countries. With a heavy heart and the threat of losing his job, Jones agrees to go to Yemen convinced the scheme will never work. Harriet, the Arab chief’s representative, has another angle and casts her bait to reel in the reluctant Jones. There are some insignificant side

Jerry Cutler on Film stories that sink and are swept away by the tides of forgetfulness. What is important is that the producers and director, Lasse Hallstrom, have given us a feel good fishing film that doesn’t flounder. 2-1/2 bagels and a shmear out of 4 ******* Jonah Hill has, thankfully, rebounded from his last comedic movie, The Sitter, a travesty. In 21 Jump Street, he is paired with Channing Tatum as two undercover cops sent to check out an infiltration of drugs at a local high school. Hill is his brilliant, innocent and bumbling self and Tatum, surprisingly adept at comedy, is the perfect macho partner as the two unwittingly get into very funny situations. The movie, with an assist from an excellent Ice Cube as their captain, starts off with a myriad of sight gags and hilarious dialogue geared to their target audience. And, as in most films of this genre, when story line and humor runs its course, the producers resort to the habitual silly car chase and vulgarity. Cutting the last 15 minutes would have done wonders for the film and reaped better results. As it is I found 21 Jump Street very amusing and was able to tolerate a lot of the high-school low humor. But, the terribly gross scene toward the end siphoned off much of the accepting frame of mind I had settled into. As far as the material goes, nothing is extraordinarily fresh. But pairing Hill and Tatum was a stroke of genius. 2-1/2 Bagels out of 4

MEETING JOEY—Doug Walker and Louise Taper of Beverly Hills were special guests of William H. and Karla Ahmanson for cocktails at their home to greet the artists behind the puppetry of War Horse. The play tells the story of young Albert’s beloved horse, Joey, who has been enlisted to fight for the English in World War I. Joey is caught in enemy crossfire and ends up serving both sides of the war before landing in no man’s land. Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home. What follows is a tale of courage, loyalty and friendship, filled with music and songs and told with innovative stagecraft. At the heart of the show are life-sized puppets that bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to life. The drama and winner of the 2011 Tony Award for “Best Play” will be presented at the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre, June 13-July 29. Bill Ahmanson is president of CTG’s board. Taper is a member of the board, and both she and Ahmanson are members of CTG’s Artistic Director’s Circle. Photo by Ryan Miller of Capture Imaging

transition. He also said that he wanted to have the interviews for commission members during the day and that Mirisch’s work schedule made it difficult. Now the question remains, will Mirisch be appointed to the Cultural Heritage Commission Liaison Committee with the new mayor? Regardless, historical preservation is important to Mirisch and he said he felt the City should honor the legacy of Beverly Hills. “Some of our classic architecture best helps physically

tell the story of our City, as well as give our community a sense of place and continuity,” Mirisch said. “It's not just preservation of architecture; it's also a knowledge of and appreciation for the people, events and stories that originated in Beverly Hills. “We have such a wonderful, rich history, even though it is fairly short by many standards. We should honor this legacy, as we try to define ourselves and chart our future. “

Liaison Committee member Alan Block, resident Russ Levi warned of the pitfalls of continuing with a large build of the Roxbury Park Community Center. He listed a number of former councilmembers who were not reelected in part because of their large build views including Linda Briskman and Steve Webb. “There is no silent majority just waiting to demonstrate their support for the present Roxbury plan,” Levi wrote. “If the Roxbury Community Center continues in even close to its present design, there will likely be an expensive city referendum on the issue anyway. That decision would not stand as there is too much potential waste of our residents’ money at stake as well as a huge blight on the cityscape of that area if those people who seek self-actualization are successful.” Levi reminded Block that the resident majority is “not in favor of any plan into which a gym, separate workout room, or convertible kitchen have been incorporated.” Assistant Director of Community Services Nancy HuntCoffey said City staff pulled all of the programmatic functions from the previously proposed community center and worked to determine levels of importance for both the public and City staff. Liaison members provided input and community members were invited to dialogue with committee members and City staff throughout the meeting. A kitchen was determined to be a necessary component of the community center and Hunt-Coffey said staff recommended that all requisite kitchen equipment be placed into the smallest square footage possible. Locker rooms, a climbing wall area, a library deck and an exercise courtyard were determined to be low priority. The City Council will have the final say on determining issues like whether the facility should have a gymnasium or a multi-purpose room. Other

BEVERLY HILLS possibilities include a café and prep kitchen. Committee members said they were uncertain if the community center needed a café but supported preparing electricity and plumbing as if it will be opened. The committee also requested City staff look more into creating a space at the park as an emergency shelter. Those things will need to come back for additional discussion at the next meeting. Preliminary discussions began on how to fix the drainage problem in the fields. Parks and Urban Forest Manager Ken Pfalzgraf said the City has two options. They can either install grid drains in the existing soils, which Pfalzgraf estimated would cost around $350,000 to $400,000, but would only minimally help. Alternatively, the city can grade, install a grid or import sand root zone, which will cost about $500,000 to $560,000, but will help significantly. Goals laid out by the liaison committee during their first meeting included preserving the green space, reducing the overall cost of the project, recouping the money that’s been spent so far and looking at a need for phasing. This was the liaison committee’s second meeting on Roxbury. The committee, consisting of Recreation and Parks Commissioners Simone Friedman and Alan Block, Vice Mayor Willie Brien and Councilman Julian Gold, will continue to meet on the subject in a public setting. The next meeting will begin with a discussion about playground equipment. Hunt-Coffey and Director of Community Services Steve Zoet have set up a notification system by which to inform residents of upcoming Roxbury park meetings. Those who were unable to attend Wednesday’s meeting but would like to have their information added to the list can email Hunt-Coffey at nhuntcoffey@beverlyhills.org or email Zoet at szoet@beverlyhills.org

Talks Books Connie Rice, the epitome that one person who can make a difference, has penned Power Concedes Nothing: One Woman’s Quest For Social Justice In America, From The Courtroom To The Kill Zones (Scribner $26). She is the cousin of former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. Both are single and stalwart supporters of their opposing political parties. Connie Rice begins the book with a question asked of her, when she was 12 and starting a new school in Phoenix: “What is you…Japanese?” The questioner was an African-American whose family were migrant workers. When Connie told him that she too was black, he didn’t believe her. After all, she was living in the lap of luxury with a home on the Air Force base and the smartest girl in the class. Something was kindled in her when she went to see where and how he lived with a corrugated tin roof over a tarp with holes punched in the walls. These were the kids who didn’t have lockers, covered lunch areas nor air conditioning. Connie and her brothers were children of an Air Force major and a former teacher who instilled the importance of reading and an education in their children. The family had already lived in Japan and were to go live in London after this assignment. No matter where she applied to college, to her father there was only one school that counted-

For a very feminine person, her sport was Tae Kwon Do which she told me allowed her to get rid of the rage she felt over Boston, civil rights and busing. In the fall of 1981, she entered NYU’s School of Law. By the end of her second year, she interned at Thurgood Marshall’s law firm, the

NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund where she had a chance to advance the cause of equal rights and social justice. Her charge was to go to Atlanta and write petitions to delay capital punishment. “…Everything I learned about the death penalty that summer showed its application was (see ‘MARTINSON,’ page 18)

Frances Allen Desert Roundup

Not only do Desert dwellers love their live theater, they put considerable time and effort, not to mention money, toward keeping the Desert a theatrical destination for worldclass entertainment which is then made available to the children of the Coachella Valley as an on-going legacy. Twenty-four years ago, a handful of women, including Betty Ford, formed a group called the Muses, to support the educational programs of the McCallum Theatre. Now, after combining with the theatre’s Patroness Circle, the 300-strong membership has raised nearly $5 million for the benefit of the McCallum, area school children, and the community. This season—from October 2011 through to May 2012— more than 40,000 children and adults will experience the McCallum through school field trips which feature performers from around the world. Instructors from the McCallum visit their classrooms and bring the students an enhanced understanding of the performing arts. The Muses & Patroness Circle has a three-fold purpose: provide education, entertainment and enlightenment, and do it with an elegance and grace unparalleled in the Valley. So it was no surprise their major fundraiser for the season was a tribute to founder/member Betty Ford—who passed away just four days after agreeing to being honorary chair of this year’s event. Themed “Singing & Swinging at the Coconut Grove,” under the demanding eye of the Desert’s foremost party designer Shari Kelley and the able assistance of Event Chair Sandra Hill and Muses & Patroness Circle president Eileen Hall, it was executed flawlessly. Stuffed monkeys, towering palms and guests dressed in “elegant night club attire” helped convey the event back to the halcyon days of the late ’50s, early ’60s. And to complete the mood even further, the entertainment was provided by such early rock ‘n‘ roll icons as Frankie Avalon, James Darren,

Mary Ann Mobley, The Modernaires and Pete Barbutti. Rob Watkins, Cassie Miller and Arris Duraso also performed, backed by the 15-piece Tex Beneke Orchestra. It’s hard to get more Coconut Grove than that. More information about the Muses & Patroness Circle or the McCallum Theatre is at 760346-6505. ****** Like Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive, the Desert’s premiere shopping street in Palm Desert, El Paseo is all about fashion and the behind-the-scenes passion that turns a piece of shapeless fabric into a chorus of “oohs and ahs.” This year, Fashion Week El Paseo, to be held starting tomorrow through Mar. 27 under the Big White Tent on El Paseo. It will give a glimpse into the design process as well as featuring the best of West Coast design in a series of nightly events such as runway shows, trunk shows, champagne receptions, afterparties, in-store promotions and events to benefit charities. One of the highlights this year will be March 21 when 8 “Project Runway” winners and all-stars who have appeared on the wildly popular TV show Project Runway All Stars. And if you see anything you like, it will be for sale the following night, March 22. If you’re a real fashionista you will know their labels. Here are the names: Michael Costello, Mondo Guerra, Mila Hermanovski, Michael Drummond, Kara Janx, Joshua Christensen, Seth Aaron, and Gordana Gehlhausen. If you know whom they are, their resumes are unimportant. If you don’t, it doesn’t matter anyway … it’s all visual, as are the creations of Beverly Hills designer Mark Zunino, who nabbed the coveted spot as “Designer of the Week.” ****** It’s Halloween in March. Though the invitation did not acknowledge the holiday directly, the dress for the evening was given as “safari or as your favorite animal character.” An interesting concept that left in

the hands of creative Desert dwellers could make for a memorable evening. The event is titled, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” and is a fundraiser benefiting ACT for MS to be held March 31 at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells. ACT for MS is the premiere resource for individuals in the Coachella Valley who have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The organization offers clients a variety of program and services to help them live with MS, its symptoms and disabilities … all free of charge. And, since the evening’s theme mirrors the theme from The Lion King, it is only fitting the evening’s honoree pianist/composer John Bayless, a child prodigy who won a scholarship to the Aspen School of Music at age 15 and two years later went off to New York to study at the famed Julliard School of Music. He is also the composer-in-residence of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition. Dr. Jack Poster, former lead trumpeter for Harry James, Ray Anthony, Si Zetner and Stan Kenton as well as recording with Frank Sinatra and Dolly Parton, headlines an evening of dancing. For more information about ACT for MS or this event, call 760-773-9806. ****** Following up on what George Christy wrote in his column last week about Sunnylands, the Desert home of Amb. Walter and Leonore Annenberg, Rancho Mirage’s “playground of presidents,” visitors will be able to tour the more than one mile of garden-path walkways on the estate for free on designated days. For those wanting a glimpse inside Sunnylands, house tours are available at $35 per person. And, if you think $35 is a bit steep to tour a house, talk to one of the 600 people who snatched up the initial batch of tickets within minutes of their going on sale. Tickets for the guided tours go on sale on the 1st and 15th day of each month. The free outside visits are offered on Thursdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. For information, visit www.sunnylands.org.

biased, obscenely uneven and unjust.” It was impossible not to be emotionally involved when a human’s life was at stake. (I did mention as we taped that there is always the other side of the story if one’s family had lost a relative.) After a short stint at UCLA and marriage, she was once again single and recruited by LDF in Los Angeles and it is here like a second volume that her life begins. It as a time in Los Angeles when Rodney King’s beating was caught on tape and broadcast around the world. The verdict in the Simi Valley trial aroused the anger for the riots and LDF was involved. She was at LAPD every week with a lawsuit or class-action suit. Rice told one ex-LAPD chief the L.A. press was not doing a good job of informing the population about conditions in South Central. Her chapters of going into the gang territory are remarkable. She finds protectors like “Fred” and “Bo” who have no fear of telling “truth to power;” but they have to be careful in this jungle. At one meeting she is introduced to the gangs and there is a

little boy named “Pygmy” when she asked him what he did, he told her that he kills. If the gang wants someone killed, a child may be arrested, but won’t be sentenced for life. She also told me about the gang recruiting a new member. If the recruit refuses twice, the gang shows him a DVD of a 10-year-old girl being gang raped because her brother tried to refuse. As for the police, it was the first time a book party was held in LAPD headquarters, hosted by the current chief in her honor. Don’t miss reading this well-written book. www.conniemarinson.com aired and streamed on www.lacityview.org at 3 and 11:30 p.m.

Section 4. Findings. The City Council hereby finds that it can be seen with certainty that there is no possibility that the adoption and implementation of the Interim Ordinance or any extension thereof may have a significant effect on the environment. Section 5. Severability. If any section, subsection, subdivision, sentence, clause, phrase, or portion of this Ordinance or the application thereof to any person or place, is for any reason held to be invalid or unconstitutional by the final decision of any court of competent jurisdiction, the remainder of this Ordinance shall be and remain in full force and effect.

Section 6. Approval and Extension of Ordinance. This Ordinance, adopted as an urgency measure for the immediate protection of the public safety, health, and general welfare, containing a declaration of the facts constituting the urgency, and passed by a minimum four-fifths (4/5) vote of the City Council, shall take effect immediately upon its adoption and shall extend the effect of the Interim Ordinance, as amended by Ordinance 11-O2609, for an additional period of one year. COMPASSION OR SUCKERS? We’ve all heard the stories of the poor, homeless pan-handler who roams the streets begging for money, then goes home to nice house, car and well-funded lifestyle. True, some of them still live in cardboard boxes but the rip-off by panhandlers is epidemic in some places. (Beverly Hills is no exception—we have our own brand of panhandlers but our police cannot remove them because of court orders). Well, it seems the entire state of California is the Golden State for mooching off others. Tuesday’s edition of The Wall Street Journal carried a “must read” op-ed piece by famed economist Michael Boskin and public policy expert John Cogan of Stanford University. Every one of us needs to read their article at wsj.com (or in print) especially just to see the hard facts. Please forget your politics for a second—just read the facts. They write: “California’s rising standards of living and outstanding public schools and universities once attracted millions seeking upward economic mobility. But then something went radically wrong as California legislatures and governors built a welfare state on high tax rates, liberal entitlement benefits, and excessive regulation. The results, though predictable, are nonetheless striking. From the mid1980s to 2005, California’s population grew by 10 million, while Medicaid recipients soared by 7 million; tax filers paying income taxes rose by just 150,000; and the prison population swelled by 115,000. “California’s economy, which used to outperform the rest of the country, now substantially underperforms. The unemployment rate, at 10.9 percent, is higher than every other state except Nevada and Rhode Island. With 12 percent of America’s population, California has one third of the nation’s welfare recipients. “ Our population grew by 10 million people but the number of taxpayers only rose 150,000. That means that 98.5 percent of newcomers to California in 30 years pay no income taxes. Is this “fair”? This is not the “1 percent vs. the 99 percent” picture painted by the “Occupy” deadbeats. This is the 1.5 percent paying for everyone else. (OK). That leaves out sales tax and property tax, but just exactly how many people with zero taxable income also have a house to pay property taxes on? Property taxes pay for most of our public schools, which means that this same 98.5 percent who have school-age children are having that education given to them by the 1.5 percent.) Please stop and think about that for a minute. Just exactly how did this happen? Boskin and Cogan trace this to public employee unions and the Democrat Party. Yesterday, Gov. Jerry Brown doubled up the new taxes he wants to add to the “1 percent.” Goodbye, California. It’s more of the same from Brown and the Democrats. Their only debate is how much more to hit the remaining “rich” in California, not how to get the state back to work. Brown’s only objective is to pay his union backers, not restart the state like he promised. That reliance on “the rich” is what really got us into this mess under former Gov. Gray Davis and Arnold did nothing to change it. Brown promised he would change it, but that’s not going to happen. And, as Boskin and Cogan point out, Silicon Valley is leaving. We’re losing exactly the people and industries that could bring us back. Smooth move, Democrats. So, whatever your political persuasion, there is simply no justification for adding 10 million people and only 150,000 new taxpayers to pay for them. “Compassion or suckers?” The answer is pretty obvious. Rabbi Jacob Pressman IT’S RIME TIME Today, dismayed by the headlines so full of death and destruction, I should like to suggest a way of competing without bombing one another to smithereens. It is a little game I have invented which can be played by 2 up to 20 persons. It is a word game in which our visualizing and imagining can give us some clean fun. Did it ever strike you that if you rearrange the letters in words you commonly use you can spell an entirely different word, or two, or three, or even four. For some now forgotten reason, I had written the word REVILE. It is a nasty word. However, if I just take the letters and rearrange them I spell RELIVE. The usual salutation to an item of correspondence is DEAR. Well, if you take those four letters and rearrange them you make it DARE, or even READ. Now you have DEAR, DARE, and READ. Take the word LIVE, rearrange and you have LIVE, VILE, and EVIL. TIME, MITE, and EMIT or even four words REAP, RAPE, PARE and PEAR. RIME and MIRE, or EAT, ATE and TEA GOT and TOG, or SOLE & LOSE PEACH and CHEAP, or PACE and CAPE LEER and REEL, or FEEL and FLEE CAME and MACE, or TEAR and RATE ROOM and MOOR See how easy it is? Why don’t you try it, either alone or with others? As you do you will find the weight of the world sliding off your shoulders. If you get 20 new combinations, send them to me, care of The Courier.

Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Mar. 16). You have an amazing gift of adaptability this year, and you’ll stretch, flex and grow yourself in order to meet the changing patterns of life. April shows you making money in a different way. You’ll love the artsy and intellectual influences that come in May. July brings your chance to show the world your talent. Gemini and Sagittarius people adore you. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Moodiness can be a sign of a controlling person. Avoid those who ride a mood rollercoaster. If not, be aware of those using their moods to manipulate others. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). Be willing to ask yourself intriguing questions, such as: What are you looking forward to? The answer will be like an arrow pointing to your talents, personal strengths and life ambitions. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). Telling and hearing too much may be a problem. The good news is that it means people want to share with you, and you want to share with them, too. The bad news is that too much sharing gets tedious. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Be patient enough to do what it takes to solve a problem. Go deeper. The first answer that’s given to you may not be the best. Keep asking “What else?” and “How else?” CANCER (June 22-July 22). It’s a good time for introspection, honesty and attention to quieter needs of your soul. The outside world has no choice but to reflect back to you what's happening with your inner life. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Children have to learn life is better with fewer sweets, less television and more fresh air. And you, playful Leo, are childlike enough now to need and heed the same lessons. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You may not be entirely pleased with yourself, but punishment is unnecessary and, in fact, would be counterproductive. Emphasize your positive characteristics, and try to ignore the behaviors you’d like to be rid of. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You may feel caught in between shortand long-term thinking. It’s actually a wonderful place to be. Too much long-term thinking is no fun, and thinking only in the short term is foolish. So enjoy this in-between state for now. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). An event coming up will go better if you start making plans now. Let yourself free-associate about how you want this to go. Talk with others about what’s coming. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Boundary issues may arise. You may feel like someone is giving unwanted advice or infringing on your privacy. Stand up for yourself. Quite simply, you want to be around people who let you be yourself. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Gather information. Get clarity on all communication. You are mighty intuitive now, but you’ll learn more by asking than by assuming you already have the answers. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You’ll get the chance to practice compassionate detachment. You will show you care about another person without getting overly caught up in the person’s life.
